"My experience with TruTravels has been one of the best travel experiences to date. I was a little concerned about having a small group - but the tour leaders have made every activity fun and engaging. I would definitely say they are friends. The organisation and local knowledge was great, they were great fun whilst remaining professional and in control. The nights out in Canggu were great, getting to meet the other tour leaders and Tru staff meeting the other tour groups is a great idea. I really cannot stress enough how much of a great trip I've had with TruTravels. From booking, to pre-tour communications, through to the last 10 days - it has been well organised, managed and delivered by amazing guides. Thanks so much to Rianna, Marta and Jonny for their enthusiasm throughout the tour, their concern for when I was sick and generally for everything they did to make this an amazing Bali Experience. Much love for the tour guides!!!I would definitely recommend a trip with TruTravels!!"

"The trip was well laid out. Tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The only complaint is some of our travel documents that were sent out were not in English. If your sending documents out correspondence should be in both the native language and the language of the people the correspondence to. Other than that a great first time experience."

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

Trattoria pomo d’oro.

Address: Arany Janos utca 9., V. district Tel: 302 6473

our older son eating seafood in Trattoria Pomo D'oro

Trattoria Pomo D’oro belongs to Gianni Annoni an Italian-born chef, restaurateur and media celebrity. In fact the whole Arany János street in downtown Budapest seems to be run by him by 2016.

He also has a wine bar (D. O. C. Vino Bar) offering a taste of fine Italian wines and the best ice cream shop in Budapest, Gelateria Pomo D’oro also belongs to him. Both places are across the Trattoria. See also Casa Pomo D’oro below.

Gianni also owns and manages several Itaian fast food place s in Budapest: Pasta & Sugo in the Downtown Market n Hold utca 8district V.), and launched the Pizza Me franchise a couple of years ago with 3-4 joints in the city centre (Király Street, Sas Street, Deák tér 3., Erzsébet krt. 51/Grand Blvd.)

the terrace of Trattoria Pomo D'oro in Arany J. utca

So he definitely knows how to run a successful restaurant. It used to be one of our go-to-places when we wanted tasty Italian food but it lost its lustre over the years.

Frequented by tourists and businessmen working in the neighbourhood so it’s quite noisy and busy during lunch and dinner time.

The menu is quite long, it’s hard to choose from the many starters, spoups, pasta dishes, pizzas, meat and seafood.

The dessert menu is rather excessive too but everything is made with care, from fresh, high quality ingredients. Service is professional and kind.

Prices are mid-range regarding the central location.

Casa Pomo D’oro

Address: Arany Janos utca 7., V. district Open: Mon-Fri: .0.00-24.00, Sat-Sun: Closed

Located right next to the Trattoria Pomo D’oro this new enterprise of Gianni Annoni functions as a multifunctional place: restaurant, cooking school, wine tasting palce, event venue (both for family ocassions and business/company events).

It’s a fun, dynamic and interactive place recommended mainly for large families/groups. Food is very good and you can join and help the chef at any time.

seating area in Akademia Italia restaurant

Akademia Italia

Address: Szent István tér 2., district V. Open: Mon-Wed: 7.30-23.30, Thurs-Fri-Sat: 7.30-23.00, Sun: 7.30-23.30

Akademia Italia right next to St. Stephen’s Basilcia is the city centre’s newest spot specializing in all things Italian. The restaurant downstairs is airy and bright , decorated in the shades of white for minimalism.

Alessandro Arena from North Italy but with family roots in Sicily runs the kitchen with dedication and professionalism.

You can store up on top quality Italian food stuff in the deli shop located on the first floor: gourmet olive oils, pastas, coffee and wine.

The food in Akademia is prepared from high-quality, fresh ingredients sourced from proffesional, reliable suppliers.

The minestrone is a Milanese version-light but flavourful. The Tortellini in Brodo is also splendid. Both soups cost 1 400 HUF.

3 risottos on one plate

If you like risotto try the 3-in-1 Trisotto (3 000 HUF): one is seasoned with truffels, the other with prosecco, and there’s also a traditional risotto giallo/risotto alla milanese: yellow from saffron.

The pizza and freshly made pastas are also excellent. Don’t miss the classic Italian desserts: panna cotta with fruits of the forest or millefoglia, both are to die for (1 000 HUF).

If you happen to be in the vicinity during brekafast time (it opens at 7.30) do drop by for true Italian style coffee /cappuccino (greatly appreciated beside the growing number third wave coffee shops serving undrinkable espressos from under-roasted beans.

Croissants, cornetto (with marmalade, vanilla or Nutella), egg dishes, sandwiches or yogurt – the choice is ample. Good value for money at a superb, central location.

Trattoria Toscana

diners on the terrace of Trattoria Toscana

Address: Belgrád rakpart 13-15, district V. Open: every day: 12.00-24.00

Trattoria Toscana is one of the oldest Italian-style restaurants in Budapest that managed to preserve a reliable quality in both food and service.

The location is unbeatable: on Danube Promenade a picturesque walkway on the Pest side of the Danube.

Attentive service, good food at corrcet prices.

Rustic interior, with warm atmosphere. Sitting on the terrace overlooking Buda Castle on a fine, sunny day is a must.

Fausto’s Ristorante (recommended by Michelin)

inside Fausto1s Ristorante

Address: Székely Mihaly ut 2., VI. district Open: Mon-Fri: 12.00-15.00 and 19.00-23.00 Tel: +36 1 877-6210

One of the oldest high-end Italian restaurants in Budapest (opened in 1994).

Elegant but cozy interior, excellent food, friendly service.

The quality remainded top level after more than two decades so you cannot go wrong with it.

Price guide: three course lunch menu: 5 000 HUF, tasting menu 15 000 – 22 000 HUF, main dishes: 8 500-9 500 HUF, it’s pricey but worth a try.

Osteria Fausto’s

Address : Dohány utca 5., VII. district Open: Mon-Sat: 12.00-23.00 Tel: 269 6806

Website: Fausto’s

A less upscale version of Fausto’s at its original location in the former Jewish quarter of Budapest .

Though it’s less refined than its predecessor, Osteria Fausto’s is still one of the top quality restaurants in Budapest with divine food and attentive and friendy staff.

Il Terzo Cerchio

eating in Il Terzio Cerchio

Address: Dohány utca 40., VII. district Open: every day: 11.30-23.30

Looks like Italian restaurants love Dohány utca because the street has another highly recommended place specializing in Italian quisine: Il Terzo Cerchio

The interior with its brick-covered vaulted ceilings and large windows exudes warm, homey atmosphere.

The place is quite busy in the evenings so if you prefer to have a more relaxed meal drop in the afternoon.

Il Terzo Cerchio is also a great place for business meetings .

You can select from a range of classic Italian starters for about 2 150 – 3 950 HUF.

Soups: the menu offers 3 soups in the range including simple but tasty Tomato soup (1 250 HUF) and a classic Italian zuppa: Minestrone (1 350 HUF).

Main dishes include a wide variety of delicious homemade pastas (between 2 200 – 4 000 HUF), fish, and meat dishes.

If you have room for dessert you can try the usual Italian sweet dishes like tiramisu, panna cotta or profitterol. Desserts are between 750-1200 HUF. The wine list includes 22 Hungarian wines out of which 5 can be ordered by the glass. There’s also a nice selection of Italian wines.

By the way the weird name of the restaurant means “the Third Circle refering to Dante’s Inferno. Perhaps their motto represents the best what you can expect in this fine trattoria in Budapest:

“On the third level of Dante Infernal Gluttony was punished with acid rain In our hell, tasty and fresh food is the punishment”

The secret of the constant high quality of Il Terzo Cerchio lies in the fresh ingredients and the care with which the food is prepared and the guests are treated.

Vapiano Pasta & Pizza Bar

The 10 Best Italian Restaurants In Budapest

  • Offbeat Budapest

Everybody loves Italian food and Hungarians are no exception. In Budapest, you'll find everything from Naples-style pizzerias to elaborate northern-Italian restaurants , but most places don't specialize in any particular region, instead putting out reliable, mid-range, pan-Italian fare along the lines of Caprese salad, pasta carbonara, and good old tiramisu.

italian tour budapest

#1 Trattoria Pomo D'Oro

Opened in 2002, Trattoria Pomo D'Oro is a popular Italian restaurant in Budapest's downtown marrying a red-sauce, old-school Italian trattoria with a modern establishment. This means the place draws everyone from middle-class Hungarian families looking for Italian comfort food to office workers and tourists. As a result, the ever-expanding space, which has managed to retain a cozy vibe, is packed to capacity with a mixed crowd every day of the week. While not cheap by Budapest standards — mains are €15-20 — price points aren't outrageous for the quality.

It's hard to go wrong with anything, but highlights include the rich, Tuscan tomato soup (pappa al pomodoro), the strozzapreti hand-rolled pasta, and the branzino fillet, be it grilled or steamed and filled with pancetta and black mussels. The pizzas, prepared in a wood-burning oven, skew Neapolitan with an airy crust. Do save room for dessert as the profiterole and the good old tiramisu are among the best you'll find in Budapest. Often overrun by business people from the nearby financial district during the day, Pomo D'Oro is most enjoyable in the evenings. Reservations are an absolute must.

#2 Ristorante Krizia

Opened in 1997 by owner-chef Graziano Cattaneo, a native from Lombardy, Krizia comes closest in Budapest to offering a true-to-Italy ristorante experience. The place is located inside an elegant below-ground space on a quiet street in Budapest's District 6 , near the city center. The snug restaurant has less than a dozen tables — all of them covered in white linen — and adorably ceremonial servers, especially the older of the two long-time waiters.

The menu features typical northern Italian fare like lasagne and tortelloni, the latter also available with a foie gras-filling in case you'd like a special treat. I also enjoy Krizia's creamy risotto — to be eaten with a spoon — and the sliced filet mignon with porcini mushrooms and a side of stracchino cheese-infused polenta. The wine list comprises everything from Lambruscos to Chiantis and Brunellos, and you can round out your meal in Italian style with a splash of Fernet or some other amaro. Mains are €15-20. Note that Krizia serves a wallet-friendly, though less elaborate, lunch prix-fixe on weekdays.

#3 Tom George Budapest

Tom George is a chic Italian restaurant on a tourist-heavy downtown street in Budapest. The highlight of the spacious restaurant is the outdoor terrace — heated and covered in the colder months — that's perfect for people watching. The reliably made pan-Italian dishes include everything from salads to pastas to wood-oven pizzas to steaks and range in price from €15 to €25. Those with a sweet tooth should not miss the seasonal desserts, which might include torta della nonna, a custardy Tuscan treat, or a classic millefoglie. There's a long wine list of both Italian and Hungarian bottles.

While the food isn't revolutionary, Tom George is one of those trendy, high-turnover restaurants with consistent dishes and a professional service. It can get crowded, so be sure to book in advance.

#4 Fausto’s Ristorante

Fausto’s Ristorante, which opened in 1994, is a classic fine dining restaurant in Budapest with a hat-tip to northern Italian fare. Forget pizza and Caprese salad; here scallops, foie gras, flatfish, and venison loin are the gastronomic currency. A couple of egg pasta and risotto are also available, made with deliciously rich sauces. The decor is traditional fine dining: soft background music drifts from the background of the dim dining room, which has only a dozen tables, all set with crisp linen tablecloths.

Under the vigilant eyes of owner Fausto Di Vora, always dressed in a chef's coat, an army of waiters quietly scurry around the tables that tend to fill up on Friday and Saturday evenings with well-heeled tourists and local businesspeople. Instead of a tasting menu, most people opt for à la carte whose mains are €28-35. The wine list is deep with both Italian and Hungarian options.

#5 Alessio Restaurant

If you like Italian food and would like a break from the bustle of the city center, head over to Alessio. With densely carpeted floors and crammed tables, this charming neighborhood restaurant is tailored to the local residents of this elite Buda neighborhood. Little about the interior will evoke the Tuscan countryside, but the dishes can hold their own. Alessio’s claim to fame, the garlic shrimp, is actually a Spanish classic (gambas al ajillo), arriving in a sizzling sauce of olive oil, chili, and garlic. It's impossible to stop eating (use the bread to mop up the rich leftover sauce to the last drop).

Other standouts include the grilled octopus and the tender and moist branzino fillet. The only dud I came across was the tiramisu of all things — it was too crumbly and the ladyfingers weren't integrated in the mascarpone — but it was much better on a later visit. Mains are €15-20.

italian tour budapest

#6 Al Dente

Al Dente is one of those under-the-radar neighborhood restaurants in Budapest you hope others won't find out about so as to keep it all to yourself. This osteria-type casual eatery within Budapest's charming Palace Quarter serves pan-Italian classics. The ever-changing daily meat, seafood, and vegetarian pastas are cooked simply and well. The pizzas lean Naples style, and you can round out a meal with homemade tiramisu, panna cotta, or cannoli. If you need to wait for a table, grab a drink at Lumen , one of my favorite Budapest bars two minutes from here on Horánszky Street.

italian tour budapest

#7 Il Terzo Cerchio

Il Terzo Cerchio is a reliable mid-range Italian restaurant in Budapest’s historic Jewish Quarter . A brick vaulted ceiling, rustic wooden furniture, and a wood-burning oven help evoke Tuscan countryside vibes on this Budapest side street (the restaurant's moniker is a reference to Dante's third circle of hell where gluttons were punished).

The food here isn’t going to blow your mind, but the pastas, seafoods, grilled meats, and pizzas are all reliable. The creamy and flavorful tomato soup, and the tagliatelle coated in pungent Tuscan sausage and a mild stracchino cheese sauce are especially good. The pizzas, flaunting a puffy crust and a moist center, gravitate toward the Neapolitan-style. Hungarian and Italian wines are also available. Mains are €10-15.

#8 2 Spaghi Pasta Bar

Run by three Italian natives, 2 Spaghi is a small pasta shop in Budapest with an endearingly simple mission: serve fresh, made-to-order pasta dishes quickly and well. You're invited to pair a variety of pasta shapes (fusilli, bucatini, tagliatelle, etc.) with a rotating set of sauces. On any day, there might be cacio e pepe, carbonara, puttanesca, amatriciana, and aglio, olio e peperoncino listed on the blackboard. All of them consistently good and about €12 each.

If you have stomach space left, round out your meal with a light panna cotta with strawberry sauce. Note that 2 Spaghi is located inside Gozsdu Udvar, a tourist-heavy area lined with overpriced bars and restaurants. I can't help thinking that this charming pasta eatery would deserve a more worthy home, but if you don't like the vibes, you can also just buy some fresh pasta to go.

italian tour budapest

#9 Da Mario Budapest

Da Mario is a pricey modern Italian restaurant in Budapest, set on a precious piece of downtown real estate between the Hungarian Parliament building and Liberty Square, with views onto both from its outdoor terrace. Instead of a trattoria vibe, the polished, high-ceilinged space features sleek leather banquettes and dark furnishings. Being within the city's financial and government district, business meals here are more typical than date nights.

Executive chef Alessandro Smanio is a native of Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna, which explains why northern Italian classics like the ricotta and spinach-stuffed tortelloni and the creamy risotto with parmesan are among the top dishes. The long menu also features grilled meats, wood-oven pizzas, pastas, and seafood. The Instagram-friendly fish soup arrives teeming with crustacean — langoustine claws project out of the plate — black mussels, squids, and octopus. Not all dishes are hits: the strozzapreti pasta with pesto and shrimp was unremarkable, and the standard Italian desserts (tiramisu, panna cotta, profiterol) tasted no better than elsewhere. Mains are €18-25.

italian tour budapest

#10 Porcellino Grasso Ristorante

Porcellino Grasso is a popular Italian neighborhood restaurant on Rózsadomb, an exclusive residential enclave on the Buda side of Budapest. Accordingly, grand, secluded villas line the streets near the restaurant. Porcellino serves reliable Italian comfort food, but few are the truly memorable dishes so it's fitting that most patrons are local residents and office workers.

Among the better options are the tomato bruschetta, the wood-oven pizzas, and the seafood spaghetti. Given the scenic hillside location, the attentive service staff, and the deep wine list, Porcellino could easily become a sought-after destination for fans of Italian food, but the kitchen would need to put out more convincing flavors. Mains are €18-25.

If you like sightseeing and discovering cities with professional guidance, our offer called „Private tours Budapest” is an ideal choice for you.

During our few-hours-trip, you’ll receive a foretaste of the most wonderful buildings and parks of the Hungarian capital city. The program includes the House of the Hungarian Parliament; the Castle District, which contains lots of buildings from the middle ages and the 19th century; the imposing St Stephen’s Basilica, in which classical concerts are often organized, or the greatest synagogue in Europe, which can be found in the Dohány street. Further interesting items are included such as roaming in the City Park or in the enormous and beautiful Central Market, adoring the view from the Citadel, or a pleasant walk in the Heroes’ Square.

Wonders of the Danube Bend

The Danube Bend is one of the most amazing places in the country, where you can enjoy both the magnificent natural environment and various cultural programs. During our „Blue Danube” tour, we’ll visit the three most famous cities. Esztergom is the center of the Hungarian Catholic Church. The 100-meter-high basilica is the highest building in the country and it was built in Classical style. However, not only its sizes are amazing: the old walls hide several cultural treasures. For example, the Bakócz-chapel, which is one of the most significant creatures of the Hungarian Renaissance. In the crypt, famous Hungarian clerics are buried such as János Vitéz who was the educator of the young Mathias king or József Mindszenty who had some role in the revolution and fight for freedom in 1956. Both the medieval castle and the peerless view are must-have experiences in Visegrád. Here is the Hercule-fountain made by Giovanni Dalmata who was one of the most talented sculptors in the 15th century in Rome. This is made from red marble and can be seen on the background of a Hungarian banknote (1000 HUF). The tiny Baroque city, Szentendre, is known about its various museums. Among others, you can see Margit Kovács’ ceramic sculptures or a whole exhibition which is dedicated to marzipan.

The Hungarian see

Visiting the towns near the Lake Balaton is a little bit longer tour than discovering the Danube Bend, but it’s also worth booking. In the porcelain manufacture of Herend, you can adore not only the wonderful products but also the process of making them. The next stop is Tihany, where you can visit the monastery found in 1055. Its deed of the foundation is one of the oldest Hungarian extant records. The Tihany peninsula is the first nature reserve in Hungary, so we recommend to adore the natural values besides the cultural ones. Of course, the denominator Balaton won’t be missed: we’ll have a pleasant, traditional lunch in Balatonfüred, which is the oldest holiday resort in the region.

Vienna tour

The Austrian capital city can be found only 240 km from Budapest. During our trip there, you’ll see the most famous sights of Vienna: the City Park, the Burgtheater, the Opera House, the Stephansdome, or the Hofburg are only some of the items. We also offer optional programs such as shopping at the Mariahilfer Strasse, walking in the Prater, or visiting the Castle of Schönbrunn, which Empress Sissy loved so much.

Bratislava tour

Although the Slovak capital city may not be mentioned among the most common tourist resorts, it offers several exciting programs. During the one-day-long tour, you’ll see all the main sights of the city. Many memories of history can be found in the picturesque old town, for example, the Michael gate, which is the sole memento of the original, medieval town wall. The castle and the Grassalkovich Palace are must-have sights; the latter one was built in Rococo style in the 18th century. The Primate’s Palace is also worth visiting; this is said to be one of the most wonderful buildings in Bratislava. Each book that was published in Bratislava between 1611 and 1622 was printed there.
