Eiffel Tower came to LA to hype 2024 Paris Olympics. Here's how

los angeles tour eiffel

UNIVERSAL CITY, California – The Eiffel Tower stood in full view when U.S. Olympic hopefuls recently sprang into action.

A skateboarder flipped his board in mid-air, a gymnast turned an aerial cartwheel and a sport climber hung one-handed from an implement – all amid iconic images of Paris, site of the Summer Olympics set to start in July.

Never mind the athletes were more than 5,500 miles from France’s famed capital.

NBCUniversal, which will televise the Olympics , brought Paris to the Los Angeles area − virtually, that is.

You see, that wasn’t the real Eiffel Tower. Or the actual Seine River. Or genuine Paris rooftops and streets. It was the work of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the division of Lucasfilm that handles special effects for entertainment like the TV show The Mandalorian, part of the Star Wars franchise.

What were very real: the athletes.

NBCUniversal invited 60 of them to a Universal Studios lot to create content that will be used during the run-up to and during the Games. The network already has begun rolling out video on social media featuring athletes such as climber Brooke Raboutou , gymnast Shilese Jones and breakdancer Sunny Choi .

"Paris is quite simply a rock star in itself," said Jenny Storms, Chief Marketing Officer for Entertainment and Sports at NBCUniversal, "and very much will continue to be a prominent part of our promotion and our marketing."

More: Olympic champ Suni Lee explains why she gained 45 pounds. 'It was so scary.'

Virtual Paris got diver 'hyped up'

Storms said the concept behind the project was no whim.

"When we go into any Olympics, the largest driver of consumption are the athletes," she said. "Their stories, who they are and just the American public connecting with them.

"But for the first time in a while, there is also another enormous driver that’s coming through in our research and our insights over the past year, which is our host city."

The project began about eight months ago, when NBC contacted ILM and shared its vision. Over the spring, the special effects gurus broke down the problems and shared solutions, according to Ian Milham, the ILM Virtual Production Supervisor who oversaw the project.

In July, NBC green-lit the project.

ILM trucked in equipment from its headquarters in San Francisco in time to assemble the stage by Nov. 16, when the athletes rolled into town. Those images, gathered during a trip to Paris, were projected onto a screen 20 feet high and 50 feet wide.

"It was super cool," said Tyler Downs, a diver who competed at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. "It kind of got me hyped up and ready to complete."

When director gave way to the athletes

Unlike the real Eiffel Tower, the virtual one could do more than lean.

ILM had the ability to move it across the stage to accommodate the athlete’s position.

The director also had use of five scenes: a fashion show runway under the Eiffel Tower, the banks of the Seine River, rooftops, the streets and a boat ride, which is how the athletes will make their entrance at the Opening Ceremony.

A director was on hand to coach the athletes – well, to a point.

"When it came time to do their skills, the athletes got to take over and they got to take their shots," Milham said, recalling with amusement the performance of gymnast Fred Richard. "He went into a handstand early while the crew was still cleaning the set and he just held the handstand the entire time that the crew cleaned the set."

Holding the position until the crew got out of the way, Milham said, Richard then did handstand pushups.

"Absurd," Milham said with amazement, similar to what the athletes expressed upon arriving at, and performing in, virtual Paris.

North American Premiere | France | 2021 | Biopic, Romance, Drama | 108 min | In French with English subtitles

Directed by: Martin Bourboulon Written by: Caroline Bongrand, Thomas Bidegain, Martin Bourboulon, Natalie Carter, Martin Brossolet Produced by: Vanessa Van Zuylen (VVZ Production), Pathé Films Cinematography: Matias Boucard Film Editing: Virginie Bruant Original Score: Alexandre Desplat Cast: Romain Duris (Gustave Eiffel), Emma Mackey (Adrienne Bourgès), Pierre Deladonchamps (Antoine Restac), Alexandre Steiger (Jean Compagnon), Armande Boulanger (Claire Eiffel), Bruno Raffaelli (Mr. Bourgès) International Sales: Pathé Films U.S Distributor : Blue Fox Entertainment U.S. Release Date : 2022

Loosely based on true events, Martin Bourboulon ‘s Eiffel is, first and foremost, a love story. Hot off his successful collaboration on the Statue of Liberty, celebrated engineer Gustave Eiffel’s most fervent desire is to build the Paris metro. But the French powers that be have other ideas. They’re badgering him to design something spectacular for the upcoming 1889 Paris World’s Fair. Eiffel is not at all interested… until he runs into an old flame who reignites a long smoldering, but far from extinguished, youthful passion. And suddenly his imagination tales flight.

The son of French producer Frédéric Bourboulon, Martin Bourboulon directed his first short film, Sale Hasard , in 2007. He went on to direct the TV series Un journée dehouf (2005) and numerous commercials. He made his foray into feature films with the wildly popular Daddy or Mommy (2015) and its sequel, Divorce French Style (2016). With an original screenplay by Caroline Bongrand, Eiffel , his third feature, was the opening film at this year’s Angoulême French Film Festival. Bourboulon is currently in production on an ambitious two-part Alexandre Dumas adaptation — The Three Musketeers: Milady and The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan .

Eiffel Tower

Top choice in Paris

Lonely Planet's Ultimate Guide

Explore insider tips, fascinating history and surprising secrets to make the most of your experience.

There are different ways to experience the Eiffel Tower, from a daytime trip or an evening ascent amid twinkling lights, to a meal in one of its restaurants. And even though some seven million people come annually, few would dispute that each visit is unique – and something that simply has to be done when in Paris.

Named after its designer, Gustave Eiffel, the Tour Eiffel was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair). It took 300 workers, 2.5 million rivets and two years of nonstop labor to assemble. Upon completion, the tower became the tallest human-made structure in the world (324m) – a record held until the 1930 completion of New York's Chrysler Building. A symbol of the modern age, it faced opposition from Paris’ artistic and literary elite, and the ‘metal asparagus’, as some snidely called it, was originally slated to be torn down in 1909. It was spared only because it proved an ideal platform for the transmitting antennas needed for the newfangled science of radiotelegraphy.

Sporting six different colors throughout its lifetime, the tower has been painted red and bronze since 1968. Work is underway to strip the previous 19 coats and apply the yellow-brown shade originally conceived by Gustave Eiffel, giving it a new golden hue in time for the 2024 Olympics.

Eiffel Tower Observation Deck

First floor: cafe and souvenir shop

Of the tower's three floors, the 1st (57m) has the most space but least impressive views. The glass-enclosed Pavillon Ferrié houses an immersion film along with a small cafe and souvenir shop, while the outer walkway features a discovery circuit to help visitors learn more about the tower’s ingenious design. Check out the sections of glass flooring that provide a dizzying view of the ant-like people walking on the ground far below. This level also hosts the restaurant  58 Tour Eiffel . The 1st floor's commercial areas are powered by two sleek wind turbines within the tower.

Second floor: Le Jules Verne restaurant

Views from the 2nd floor (115m) are the best – impressively high but still close enough to see the city below. Telescopes and panoramic maps pinpoint locations in Paris and beyond. Story windows give an overview of the lifts’ mechanics, and the vision well allows you to gaze through glass panels to the ground. Also up here are toilets, a souvenir shop, a macaron bar, and Michelin-starred restaurant  Le Jules Verne .

Top floor: Champagne bar and 'secret apartment'

Views from the wind-buffeted top floor (276m) stretch up to 60km on a clear day, though at this height the panoramas are more sweeping than detailed. Celebrate your ascent with a glass of bubbly (€13 to €22) from the Champagne bar (open 10.15am to 10.15pm). Afterwards peep into Gustave Eiffel’s restored top-level office, otherwise known as the 'secret apartment', where lifelike wax models of Eiffel and his daughter Claire greet Thomas Edison.

Tours, tickets and other practicalities

Visitors must pass through security at the bullet-proof glass barriers surrounding the tower's base. The two entrances to the glass enclosure are on avenue Gustave Eiffel; the two exits are on quai Branly.

Ascend as far as the 2nd floor (either on foot or by lift), from where there's a separate lift to the top floor (closed during heavy winds). Pushchairs must be folded in lifts and bags or backpacks larger than aeroplane-cabin size aren't allowed. Note that the top floor and stairs aren't accessible to people with limited mobility.

Pre-purchasing tickets online gives you an allocated time slot and means you only have to queue for security. Print your ticket or show it on your phone. If you can’t reserve your tickets ahead of time, expect lengthy waits for tickets in high season.

Aerial view of Paris at sunset.

Stair tickets can't be reserved online. Buy them at the south pillar, where the staircase can also be accessed: the climb consists of 360 steps to the 1st floor and another 360 steps to the 2nd floor.

If you have reservations for either restaurant, you're granted direct post-security access to the lifts.

For the best view of the light show, head across the Seine to the Jardins du Trocadéro.

Eiffel Tower floors

Eiffel Tower has four levels – The Esplanade, the first floor, the second floor, and The Summit.

You can reach the first floor only by stairs.

Visitors can reach the second floor of the Tower both by stairs and the lift.

Visitors must take an elevator to the Tower’s topmost floor, also known as the Summit, from the second floor.

Image:  Toureiffel.paris

In this section, we list out all the must-see exhibits at the attraction.

The Esplanade

The Esplanade is a large area below the Eiffel Tower.

Four pillars (East, South, North, and West) hold the puddled iron structure and help it reach 324 meters (1062 feet) above the ground.

On the north leg of the tower, a bronze bust of Gustave Eiffel is installed.

On the west leg, the Information Desk can be found. Here, you can learn about ticket prices, a map, elevators, waiting times, and more.

The four legs of the Tower house the lifts and stairways to go up.

Bust of Gustave Eiffel

This statue of Gustave Eiffel stands at the foot of the Tower, in the corner of the North pillar.

Antoine Bourdelle sculpted this bust, and it has been an attraction since 1929.

Eiffel Tower elevators

The elevators in the East and West Pillars of the Tower use hydraulic machines more than a century old.

You may not see the hydraulic machines because they are in the basement, but you can see the lifts.

Gustave Eiffel designed these imposing hydraulic machines himself.

*The Esplanade is also home to the information desk (at the West pillar).

First floor, Eiffel Tower

There are lots of exhibits and shows to see on the first floor.

The immersion show

The Immersion show takes you on a journey into the World of the Eiffel Tower.

The show, which happens in Ferrié Pavilion, is projected on three walls by seven projectors.

The New Cultural Path

This path is along the outer passageway.

This exhibit narrates the history of the Tower using various mediums, such as screens, touch screens, displays, digital albums, and reproductions of items.

You will be surprised at how little you know about this world-famous attraction.

The Glass Floor

Don’t miss the transparent walkway on the first floor, which has become a massive hit with visitors.

The glass floor offers dramatic views above 57 meters (187 feet).

Spiral Staircase

Gustave Eiffel had a small office at the top of the Tower.

Before he built an elevator from the second floor to the third floor, he used a spiral staircase to reach his office.

However, in 1983, this spiral staircase was removed, and a part of it was displayed on the first floor.

The 1st floor also houses the 58 Tour Eiffel restaurant and the souvenir shop.

Second floor, Eiffel Tower

There is no exhibit on the 2nd floor.

However, you can enjoy unobstructed views of Paris city, including views of monuments such as The Louvre, Notre Dane, Grand Palais, Montmartre, Invalides, the Seine River, etc.

Jules Verne, the Michelin-starred restaurant, is also on this floor.

The Summit, Eiffel Tower

The Summit is made up of two levels – one indoors and the other outside.

Gustave Eiffel’s office

Gustave Eiffel’s office at the top of the Tower is maintained as it was during its heydays.

His office depicts Gustav and his daughter Claire welcoming American inventor Thomas Edison with life-like wax models.

During their meeting, Edison gifted Gustave Eiffel a Gramaphone, which is also available in the office.

The panoramic maps

At the Summit, you can find panoramic maps at various places.

These maps help identify other tall monuments in different cities and give their relative direction and distance from the Tower.

You also get to compare the height of the tall monuments/buildings with that of the Eiffel Tower.

Model of the Top floor

One of the must-see exhibits on the Summit is the model of the top of the Tower from 1889.

This model is on a 1:50 scale and is in the Tower’s original reddish-brown color.

The Tower’s Summit also has a champagne bar that serves rose and white champagne.

Once you reach the Eiffel Tower, getting in and around can be confusing for some visitors.

However, you can follow our recommendation for a smooth visit and exit.

Getting inside The Esplanade

Eiffel Tower map

Esplanade is the area under the Tower.

There are two entrances to the Esplanade – the South and East entrances.

We recommend you enter through the East entrance because it is usually less crowded.

After a brief security check, you can walk past the landscaped gardens to reach the Esplanade.

Visitors opting for elevators

If you plan to go up the Tower in an elevator, you must head to the EAST or WEST pillars of the Tower.

If you aren’t sure, ask anybody, and they can guide you.

Green flag at Eiffel Tower

If you have already bought tickets online, look for a queue with a Green flag for direct entry.

You will find green-marked queues under both pillars.

Yellow flag at Eiffel Tower

If you haven’t yet booked your tickets, you must join the queue for the ticket office.

This queue will have a yellow flag and will most likely be long.

Tip: Purchase your Eiffel Tower tickets online to avoid wasting time in ticket counter queues.

Ticket offices are available on both the East and West pillars of the Tower.

Visitors opting for stairs

Blue flag at Eiffel-Tower

If you plan to climb the stairs to the second floor of the Tower, you must head towards the South pillar and look for a Blue flag.

Stand in the queue marked by a Blue flag if you have to buy tickets for the stairs up to the second floor or stairs plus lift tickets to the Summit.

Your path within the Eiffel Tower

All visitors start on the second floor.

However, the path you will follow depends on the ticket you have in your hand.

Second-floor tickets

If you have the 2nd-floor tickets , you can take the lift or stairs to the second floor.

After taking in the Parisian views, you climb to the first floor to see numerous exhibits, including the glass floor.

You then get down to the Esplanade and exit the Tower.

Summit tickets

If you have the Summit tickets , you take a lift to the top after visiting the second floor.

Once you have explored the Summit, you come down to the first floor to see the exhibits and finally get off the Tower.

Stairs tickets

If you have the stairs tickets , your path will be linear.

You will first climb to the first floor and then to the second floor.

Once you enjoy the fantastic views from the second floor, you will climb to the third floor (the Summit).

Finally, you will climb down all the floors, with the option to revisit the first and second floors on your way down.

Best photos of the Eiffel Tower : If you want a classic full-length shot of the Eiffel Tower, you must visit Place du Trocadero. It is right across the River Seine, about 1 Km away from the Eiffel Tower.

At night, the Eiffel Tower is the main attraction of the ‘City of Lights.’

The attraction looks mesmerizing during the night, and the night view from the Tower is even better.

Once you are on top, you can see the other Parisian landmarks lit up – Notre Dame Cathedral, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, etc.

The Tower sparkles every night – for five minutes every hour.

The sparkling starts at dusk when the city lights up and usually ends at 1 am in the night.

However, on special nights such as Christmas, etc., it ends at 2 am.

During the sparkling, the tower is covered with golden lights, and 20000 light bulbs power the sparkling.

Eiffel Tower at day or night?

If you want to see the panoramic view and want to take pictures with Paris in the backdrop, you must schedule your visit during the day.

But if you want to experience the sunset and light shows, you must visit the Eiffel Tower at night.

Having said that, it isn’t easy to choose between these two.

If you are in Paris for more than five days, we suggest you make two visits – one during the day and another at night.

Are you planning to visit the Eiffel Tower at night ? Follow the link to learn in detail about the lights show, sparkling, climbing the Tower, tickets, image rights, etc.

Crazy but true: Sid Frisjes is known as the Eiffel Tower finger guy for trying to ‘touch’ the Tower.

View from the top of the Eiffel Tower is to die for. It is both romantic and thrilling.

No wonder more than 250 million visitors have climbed the Tower in its 125-year history.

Eiffel Tower restaurants in Paris are popular with both locals and tourists.

This tourist attraction has two restaurants – 58 Tour Eiffel and Le Jules Verne.

The dress code for both restaurants is smart casual. Sportswear, such as t-shirts, shorts, trainers, etc., are not allowed.

58 Tour Eiffel Restaurant

58 Tour Eiffel is a luxurious, newly redesigned restaurant located on the first floor.

It serves classic French cuisine with a variety of drinks.

Height: 58 meters (190 feet)

Le Jules Verne Restaurant

Le Jules Verne is a small yet excellent restaurant on the Eiffel Tower’s second floor.

It offers its visitors a variety of food, such as seafood, fusion, street food, French and European, and extraordinary views.

Height: 125 meters (410 feet)

For details such as timings, prices, menu, dress code, reservations, kid-friendliness etc of the Eiffel Tower restaurants , follow the link.

Dinner at Eiffel Tower

Dinner at the Eiffel Tower can be an unforgettable night out experience.

The fact that it is a combination of two classical Parisian experiences – exquisite French food and panoramic views from the Tower makes it a unique experience.

If you opt for 58 Tour Eiffel restaurant, we recommend their 4-course dinner of classic French cuisine.

You can choose the 6.30 service or, if you prefer a late dinner, the 9.30 service.

Dinner time at Le Jules Verne is between 6 pm to 9.30 pm. Unfortunately, it does not serve dinner on 14 July.

Eiffel tower lunch

You don’t need to reserve a table for lunch at 58 Tour Eiffel.

You can walk in anytime between 11.30 am and 3.30 pm, and a table will be allocated to you, subject to availability.

Lunchtime at Le Jules Verne is from 12 pm to 1.30 pm.

Restaurants with a view of the Eiffel Tower

We recommend the below given three restaurants –

Le Ciel de Paris

Restaurant Le Ciel de Paris is on the 56th floor of Tour Montparnasse and offers a panoramic view of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower.

Even though this is a pricey restaurant, you will have to reserve in advance.

Le New York

This Cafe on Avenue de New York offers a great view of the tower from just across the Seine.

Chez Francis

Many tourists recommend Chez Francis as the perfect place for a spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower.

This classic brasserie is at Place de l’Alma and boasts a large terrace from which diners can enjoy the Parisian masterpiece.

The Eiffel Tower is in the center of Paris, on the banks of the River Seine.

It is on the Champs de Mars, a sizeable public greenspace in Paris, at 5 Avenue Anatole France in the 7th arrondissement of Paris.

Address: Champ de Mars, 5 Av. Anatole France, 75007 Paris, France. Get Directions .

Here are a few questions visitors usually ask before visiting the Eiffel Tower.

How many stairs are there in the Eiffel Tower?

There are 1665 steps from the Esplanade (ground level) to the top level.

What is the Summit at the Eiffel Tower?

The third floor, or the topmost floor, is usually referred to as Summit.

It is accessible to all tourists who have an Eiffel Tower Summit ticket.

Which floor offers the best view – the 2nd floor or 3rd floor (Summit)?

The second floor offers more beautiful and better views than the top floor, as it’s a little bit harder to see the city’s beautiful landmarks from the top floor or the Summit.

Many times, just because of its height, the city becomes cloudier and hazier at the top, and viewers might not see it clearly.

Is it worth going up to the Eiffel Tower Summit?

If you are visiting the Eiffel Tower, you must also visit the Summit.

Though it costs extra to visit the top, it’s totally worth it.

To see Gustav Eiffel’s office on top of the Tower is a lifetime opportunity.

Do I have to take stairs or an elevator to go up to the Eiffel Tower Summit?

Only an elevator can take you up the Tower Summit. There is no option to climb the stairs.

The lift for the top floor must be taken from the second floor as no single elevator works from the ground directly to the top of the tower.

Where can I buy tickets for the Eiffel Tower Summit?

To visit the Summit, you must buy your tickets from the ground floor or purchase them online in advance.

Some visitors prefer to go up to the second floor and then decide if they want to visit the Tower’s Summit.

A limited number of Summit tickets are sold on the second floor for such visitors. However, there is no guarantee that you will get one on the day of your visit.

That’s why buying Summit tickets in advance is better.

Can I buy last-minute tickets to the Eiffel Tower?

If you decide to visit the Parisian attraction on a whim, you can also buy Eiffel Tower tickets at the last minute.

You have two options: either arrive early and line up at the ticketing queue or buy your tickets online up to three hours before your visit.

Explore the Eiffel Tower

Come and discover the Eiffel Tower in a journey to the clouds like none other in the world. You’ll be swept away by emotions and adrenaline, from the esplanade to the top, whether day or night! The Eiffel Tower welcomes visitors every day, including in the evening. At nightfall, it lights up and sparkles every hour until closing time arrives, when it turns off. To visit the floors of the Eiffel Tower – there are three: first floor, second floor and the top – visitors can either purchase tickets in advance, from our official online ticket office, or on site the day of their visit, at the ticket office located on the esplanade below the Eiffel Tower. If you wish to simply come and enjoy a stroll beneath the Tower, on the esplanade and in the gardens, access is free. All you need to do is take one of the monument’s two main entrances and go through the security checks.

The Eiffel Tower offers a range of ticket options, to the top (by elevator only, or by elevator then stairs) or to the second floor (by elevator or by stairs). All tickets include access to the lower levels. First, visit the highest level included in your ticket: second floor or top. At the top, which is accessed solely via elevator from the second floor, enjoy the most impressive 360° view of Paris, at a height of 906 feet. At this level, you can also celebrate your experience with a glass of bubbles from the champagne bar. A reconstruction of Gustave Eiffel’s office with wax figures can be seen through portholes. At a height of 381 feet, on the second floor, you have two levels and plenty of space to explore. Contemplate Paris from a range of perspectives, spot its most iconic monuments and buildings, and admire the structure of the Tower above you.

On the lower level of the second floor, you’ll find the famous Pierre Hermé macaron bar, a buffet, shops, and a kiosk serving drinks, including champagne. On the upper level, you can take in the most unobstructed view. It’s also on this level that you can find the Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant, Le Jules Verne. Reservations must be made separately from your ticket purchase (accessible via a private elevator). Lastly, the first floor, located at 187 feet, is also worth a detour, to learn more about the history of the Eiffel Tower. This vast space is full of museum installations and offers a large shop. And if you’re feeling hungry, you have several options: enjoy a meal or snack on-the-go at the bistro or on the terrace (if the season allows). Otherwise, the Madame Brasserie restaurant and lounge will be happy to welcome you all day long: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, pre-dinner snacks, dinner, and even brunch on Sundays (outside of school holidays).

7 stunning L.A. gardens where you can stop and smell the roses (quite literally!)

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Spring doesn’t always arrive with a bang in L.A. Temperatures tiptoe up and the sun waits a little longer to set, but there isn’t exactly a flashing sign to tell us that we’re in the vernal glow of the year’s first shoulder season.

That is, unless you happen to glimpse a rose garden. May is to roses what July is to fireworks, which is to say, it’s when they go off . Glum, pruned-back bushes erupt with stupid-pretty blossoms that evoke pastel supernovas, origami whirlpools and tiny watercolor ball gowns.

Planning your weekend?

Stay up to date on the best things to do, see and eat in L.A .

And they aren’t just easy on the eye. According to Karen Haney, who teaches horticultural therapy at UCLA Extension, rose blossoms can be a balm for the mind too.

“Roses give us a wide range of sensory experience that we can use to improve our mood,” she told me, noting that the kaleidoscopic colors and textures can actually engage our brains to reduce anxiety.

Then there are the fragrances — those mysterious swirls of floral, herbal and animal notes that have intoxicated poets and perfumers for millennia. “When you are experiencing that scent, the mindfulness that you’re giving to that moment is providing a restorative experience for your brain, a little bit of softness,” Haney said. “Our heart rate might lower, we take deeper breaths and we’re calming our sympathetic nervous system.”

Luckily for Angelenos, these natural mood-boosters are easy to find. Abundant sunshine and mild weather make Southern California an ideal climate for rose gardens, from charming historic plots like the Orcutt Ranch Horticultural Center to world-class collections like Huntington Gardens and the Expo Park Rose Garden.

The blooms stay spectacular from spring all the way through the beginning of winter, when most gardeners prune their blossoms to help the plants recharge for the next year. But there’s no time like the present, so we’ve put together a useful map to help you discover the most show-stopping, fragrant and relaxing rose gardens in the L.A. area right now.
