Formation of the Band
Journey was formed in 1973 in San Francisco, California, bringing together a group of highly talented musicians. The founding members included Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, Aynsley Dunbar, and George Tickner. With their combined musical prowess and creative vision, they set out to create something extraordinary.
Early Years and Musical Style
During their early years, Journey experimented with a fusion of rock, jazz, and progressive influences, creating a distinctive sound that set them apart from their contemporaries. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1975, showcased their musical versatility and marked the beginning of their incredible journey.
Evolution and Breakthrough Success
In 1977, Journey underwent a significant change that would forever shape its destiny. Steve Perry joined the band as their lead vocalist, injecting new energy and unparalleled vocal range into their music. This lineup change proved to be a turning point for Journey, leading to a series of chart-topping albums and unforgettable songs.
Chart-topping albums and Hit Singles
Journey’s breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of their album “Infinity,” which became a massive success. The album spawned the hit singles “Wheel in the Sky” and “Lights,” propelling Journey into the mainstream spotlight. They continued their winning streak with subsequent albums, including “Evolution” (1979) and “Departure” (1980), which produced hits like “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin'” and “Any Way You Want It.”
The Iconic Album: “Escape”
In 1981, Journey released their most iconic album to date, “Escape.” This album elevated their status as rock superstars and solidified their place in music history. Featuring the mega-hits “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” and “Who’s Crying Now,” “Escape” became an instant classic, captivating audiences with its emotionally charged lyrics and powerful melodies.
The Power Ballad Era
Journey’s success continued into the mid-1980s, defined by the rise of power ballads that struck a chord with fans worldwide. Songs like “Faithfully,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” and “Send Her My Love” showcased the band’s ability to create heartfelt and anthemic ballads that resonated deeply with listeners.
A Change in Direction
As the 1990s approached, Journey faced challenges and underwent significant lineup changes. Steve Perry departed from the band in 1987, leading to a period of transition as they searched for a new lead vocalist. Despite these challenges, Journey remained resilient and continued to produce music that captivated its loyal fan base.

Rolie’s soulful voice and exceptional skills as a keyboardist and harmonicist contributed to the band’s early success. He showcased his talent on albums like “Journey,” “Look into the Future,” and “Next.” However, Rolie transitioned to co-lead vocals when Steve Perry joined the band in 1977.
Steve Perry: The Voice of Journey’s Greatest Hits
Steve Perry, widely recognized as the quintessential Journey lead singer, propelled the band to unprecedented heights during their most commercially successful era. Born with a gift for singing, Perry’s powerful and emotive vocals struck a chord with audiences worldwide. With Perry at the helm, Journey released a string of chart-topping albums, including “Infinity,” “Escape,” and “Frontiers.” Iconic songs like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” and “Faithfully” became anthems for a generation. Though it arrives amidst lawsuits , social media sniping and infighting, Journey is turning 50 this year.
During that half century, the group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, logging 11 platinum-or-better albums (including Diamond certifications for 1981’s Escape and 1988’s Greatest Hits) , earning eight top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 and 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also been a reliable ticket-selling act for most of its career, and in 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Journey’s is the story of eras. When the group originally formed in San Francisco in 1973, original manager Herbie Herbert helped bring together guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player/vocalist Gregg Rolie from Santana, bassist Ross Valory and rhythm guitarist George Tickner from Frumious Bandersnatch and drummer Prairie Prince from The Tubes. Prince would be replaced by David Bowie/Frank Zappa skins man Aynsley Dunbar, while Tickner would leave after Journey’s self-titled first album in 1975. The remaining quartet recorded two more albums before Steve Perry came on board for 1978’s Infinity, which began the band’s run of multi-platinum smashes — also marking the first appearance of Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse’s iconic scarab logo for the band. Dunbar was replaced by Steve Smith for 1979’s Evolution , and Rolie would leave in 1980 with Jonathan Cain of The Babys joining to help elevate the band to even greater fortunes on Escape and Frontiers .
The palette has been diverse, but there are common elements among Journey’s best songs — sturdy melodies and sing-along choruses, usually leading into one of Schon’s majestic guitar solos. But within that mold there’s also been plenty of invention and clever arrangements that have never been as formulaic as some of the band’s detractors (particularly during their early ‘80s heyday) would have you believe.
Journey has gone through its fair share of lineups, with singer Arnel Pineda on board since 2007 — the longest continuous tenure of any Journey frontman. The group released Freedom , it’s first new studio album in 11 years, in 2022, and despite the current legal fractures (which you can read about in detail here ), still they ride, as the Escape track says — and may they keep on runnin’ for a long time.
With all that in mind, here are our picks for Journey’s 10 best songs — not all of which come from the biggest hits.
"Someday Soon" ( Departure , 1980)
This album track from Rolie’s finally studio effort with the band is a hypnotic tone poem, with a ringing, cushy ambience and a hippie kind of optimism – not to mention the best give-and-take Perry and Rolie achieved during their time together in the band. It’s of course been eclipsed by Journey’s myriad hits (“Any Way You Want It” is the enduring top 40 Hot 100 hit from Departure ), but it’s a gem worthy of discovery. Listen here.
"Escape" ( Escape , 1981)
The title track from Journey’s Billboard 200-topping studio album straddled the hard rock/pomp attack of the group’s mid-‘70s output with the melodic sensibility of the Perry-Cain axis. Its five-minute length provides room for the arrangement to stretch out and flow from one song part to the next, with a crunch that was part of Journey’s palette at the time. Listen here.
"Of a Lifetime" ( Journey , 1975)
The Journey of 1973-77 was certainly a different creature than the hitmaking colossus so many know and love. The group’s initial lineups flexed instrumental muscles, smoothly knitting together a number of styles more interested in the journey (ba- dum ) than any commercial destination. The first track from its first album is a prototype, leaning into blues, psychedelic rock and a touch of Latin, with the first of what would become many standout Schon solos, and a tuneful sturdiness delivered by Rolie’s soulful vocal. Listen here.
"Faithfully" (Frontiers , 1983)
The melody of this top 20 Hot 100 hit came to Cain in a dream on a tour bus, and his paean to the struggle between home and the road was written in a half-hour. The result was a swoon-inducing ballad tailor-made for a sea of lighters (back then) and cellphone flashlights (now), capturing one of Perry’s best recorded performances and one of Schon’s most inspired solos. One of its great side stories is that Prince contacted Cain after he wrote “Purple Rain,” concerned that it might be too similar to “Faithfully.” Cain determined it wasn’t, but joked to Billboard that, “After seeing what it became, I should have asked for a couple of points….”
"Ask the Lonely" (single, 1983)
Recorded for Frontiers , this one wound up in the romcom Two of a Kind (starring the Grease duo of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John) and rocked its way to No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Like “Only the Young,” which wound up in Vision Quest two years later, it showed that Journey was on roll – and well-suited for big soundtrack moments. Listen here.
"Who's Crying Now" ( Escape, 1981)
The best of Journey’s swoon songs — started by Perry while driving into Los Angeles and finished with Cain — has a subtlety and dynamic build that sets it apart from the many others of its ilk they’d create. The verse slips into the chorus with a soulful ease, and Schon’s guitar accents deftly build up to his searing solo at the end. The Escape single reached No. 4 on the Hot 100. Listen here.
"Feeling That Way" ( Infinity , 1978)
If fans at the time wondered how Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie would co-exist, this was the answer — an ebb-and-flow tradeoff that proved they could complement each other as lead singers as well as harmonize smoothly together (first evidenced by Infinity ‘s lead track “Lights”). Its medley-like pairing with the next track, “Anytime,” was gravy that would become a motif on the next few Journey albums. Listen here.
"Just the Same Way" ( Evolution , 1979)
Journey’s fifth album had a punchier sound than Infinity — though they shared producer Roy Thomas Baker — which worked to the benefit of the album’s first single. Led by Rolie’s piano and muscular lead vocal, with Perry responding on the choruses and bridge, it reached No. 58 on the Hot 100 in 1979. In a perfect world this would have been as big as anything from Escape or Frontiers, but it’s still a convincing introduction to the Rolie era of the band. Listen here.
"Don't Stop Believin'" ( Escape , 1981)
More than a billion Spotify streams, a Library of Congress National Recording Registry placement and plays at virtually every sporting event around the world don’t lie — this one is Journey’s pinnacle of success. Created during a rehearsal at the group’s warehouse HQ in Oakland, Calif., it gave us the “streetlight people” of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip and put the non-existent South Detroit on the map. And it saves the chorus for the song’s end, after the guitar solo. A cross-generational hit? Believe it, gleefully.
"Stone in Love" ( Escape , 1981)
Schon reportedly called this “Stoned in Love” when he wrote the riff, and it’s certainly an addictive track that’s the best roll-down-the-windows-and-crank-it-up Journey fix you could ask for — not to mention a frequent show opener. A No. 13 Mainstream Rock Airplay hit in 1981, the song is practically a deep cut today. But its anthemic chorus is a spirit-lifter and the dynamic breakdown that segues into the song-closing guitar solo harks back to the ambitious musicality of the first few albums. “Stone” is a gem that still shines bright. Listen here.

The History Of Journey’s Music
via journey/YouTube
A Long Way To The Top
Unlike other bands from the 1970s, Journey had a pretty weak start in the music industry and it took them years before they broke into mainstream and got the recognition they deserved.
They formed in 1973 and released their first album in 1975 which established their sound that fused jazz and progressive rock. It didn’t work well for them though – at least not commercially.
Guitarist Neal Schon recalls, “I still think some of the stuff we did then was great. Some of it was self-indulgent, just jamming for ourselves, but I also think a lot of other things hurt us in the early days. It took a while for the politics to sort of shape up.”
They opened for popular rock acts like Black Sabbath, Target, Judas Priest and Emerson, Lake & Palmer but fame still eluded Journey.
When they got singer Steve Perry onboard, it was clear from the get-go that he suited the band perfectly. They changed their musical approach – deciding to move towards a more commercialized sound mixing guitar-driven hard rock with pop. An early progenitor of “arena rock”, they reached their peak between 1978 and the early ’80s.
With Perry’s smooth tenor and amazing range, their songs have stood the test of time. Their first LP with him, “Infinity” was an immediate success, peaking at #21 on the US Billboard 200. It spawned the popular singles “Lights” and “Wheel in the Sky” which became a staple in their live shows.
Their fifth studio effort “Evolution” gave them their first top 20 hit in the US Billboard Hot 100 -“Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin'” which was partly inspired by one of Perry’s musical influences Sam Cooke. Schon’s heavy guitar work and Perry’s soulful vocals were a match made in music heaven.
They struck gold in 1981 with the release of “Escape” – the first to feature keyboardist Jonathan Cain. The LP gave them four classic hits “Don’t Stop Believin'”, “Who’s Crying Now”, “Still They Ride”, and “Open Arms”.
By this time, they have refined and perfect their sound – infectious melody, heavy riffing, face-melting guitar solos, and Perry’s soaring vocals. It wasn’t all hard rock numbers because even their ballads were something else thanks mostly to Perry’s impeccable and effective delivery.
Riding high on the success of “Escape”, they released “Frontiers” less than two years later which included four more successful singles – “After the Fall”, “Send Her My Love”, “Faithfully”, and “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)”.
Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. They had a couple more albums but nothing that touched the greatness of “Escape” and “Frontiers”. That’s not to say their songs are bad, they still had their moments but at the height of their career, they were simply unmatched.

Bernie Williams on a ‘nervous’ journey from World Series to New York Philharmonic
For Bernie Williams, grabbing a bat was easy. He would pull out the same trusty 34 1/2-inch, 33-ounce Rawlings model for all occasions during his New York Yankees career, whether that was in spring training or the playoffs, whether he was facing a flamethrower or a knuckleballer.
Music, however, is different.

“Choosing a guitar is about the gig,’’ Williams said. “It’s about the sound that you want to create, and it’s about the music that you’re going to play. You need the right instrument with the right gig, and that varies with time.”
Such is what vexes the former outfielder as he prepares for a second big-league debut — this time in the arts. Williams for the first time will play guitar with the New York Philharmonic, at the Spring Gala on Wednesday, an epic milestone for a five-time All-Star and four-time World Series champion now deep into life’s second act.
So, which guitar? The acoustic steel string? The archtop? Williams said a few weeks ago that he might even choose to go electric “for that sort of Santana-like sound,” though he added it “might just be too over the top for that environment.”
Williams, who spent his entire career with the Yankees from 1991 to 2006, has rebranded himself as an accomplished musician, ordained with a Latin Grammy nomination and critical acclaim. Still, at age 55, the thought of stepping into the spotlight at another hallowed New York venue — think Yankee Stadium, but with better acoustics — gives Williams butterflies.
On Wednesday, he will play one selection, his 2009 piece “Moving Forward,” as newly arranged by jazz artist Jeff Tyzik. Famed conductor Gustavo Dudamel will be at the helm.
“I expect to be as nervous as I’ve ever been on any kind of stage,’’ Williams said “But I think it’s gonna be no different from playing a seventh game of the World Series, you know?”
To answer that last question: No, Mr. Williams, we don’t know. There is no one else in baseball history poised to compare the experience of baseball’s Fall Classic and the Philharmonic’s Spring Gala. No one else has played in “The House That Ruth Built” and in the concert hall Leonard Bernstein christened by conducting on opening night in 1962.
Williams’ distinction means much gnashing of teeth for the president and CEO of the New York Philharmonic. Gary Ginstling is an ardent Mets fan.
“This is a deeply difficult decision for me, I have to say,’’ Ginstling cracked during a phone interview. “I did scour the landscape for any retired Mets. But no one could hold a candle to Bernie Williams.”
This experience is enough to give Williams flashbacks to his first big-league at-bat. The switch hitter was 22 years old when he stepped to the plate in the third inning at Yankee Stadium against left-handed junkballer Jeff Ballard on July 7, 1991. It was hardly a soaring opening note. The Baseball-Reference box score immortalized the moment this way: Groundout: 3B-1B (Weak 3B) .
The outing got better. Williams drove in a run with the sacrifice fly in the fifth and brought home another run with an infield single in the ninth .
“I remember being really nervous,’’ Williams said of that debut. “I remember being in this place where there was a lot of uncertainty about my career and my own ability to stay in the big leagues. All I wanted to do was to get an opportunity to be able to show people what I can do.’’
A week later, Williams hit his first home run at Anaheim Stadium against the California Angels. He hit a fastball thrown by Chuck Finley over the left-center field wall. He kept rolling from there: a .297 batting average with 287 home runs and 147 stolen bases over 16 seasons.
July 14, 1991 Bernie Williams hits his first career home run pic.twitter.com/nYIteNuXlL — NY Yankees Throwbacks (@yankeethrowback) February 19, 2022
Williams helped the Yankees win four World Series titles, including three in a row from 1998 to 2000. His 22 career postseason homers rank third all-time behind Manny Ramírez (29) and José Altuve (27).
That summation has applied, at times, to his musical career, partly because it would be easy to dismiss Williams as just another retired jock with an expensive new hobby. But his lifelong musical journey is part of what appeals to the New York Philharmonic. The Spring Gala, to be performed at the David Geffen Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, is a fundraiser for musical education. Ginstling wants the younger crowd to be inspired by Williams’ scholarly dedication to his craft.
Williams’ first instructor was his father. Bernabé Williams, an able seaman with the Merchant Marine, returned from Spain with a gift for his 7-year-old son. It was a guitar that his son never put down. The family then found a guitar teacher in its neighborhood in Puerto Rico, and by the time Bernie was 9 years old, he had performed on a local radio station with other star pupils.
“The guitar teacher had all the little kids that were taking lessons with him, the ones that were kind of like standouts,’’ Williams recalled. “He would give them an opportunity to play a song or two on that radio show. … It was such a great experience and kind of set the stage for everything that came after.”
Williams kept playing throughout his baseball career, especially so while grieving the loss of his father, who died of lung disease in 2001 . The former batting champion then studied guitar and composition for a year at the State University of New York at Purchase in preparation for his first album, “Moving Forward.” That release strengthened his bona fides thanks to 14 solid tracks including collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, Jon Secada and Dave Koz.
But eventually, Williams formalized his expertise. He enrolled in the prestigious Manhattan School of Music en route to a bachelor’s degree.
“I tell you what, none of the home runs that I hit in the postseason helped me there,” Williams said. “I had to really reinvent myself. And in a very strange way, I had to earn the admiration of the kids that I was playing with, because they were all virtuosos in their own instruments by the time they got to the Manhattan School of Music.
“I was the old guy in the back of the room. I was asking all the questions and asking that no one erase the blackboard until I was finished writing all the notes.”
Williams wasn’t chasing a diploma for the sake of the paper. The experience signified his graduation from ballplayer to artist.
“I think the school gave me a great perspective on the reasons why I wanted to be a musician and the responsibility that we have as music makers to make sure that we make this world a better place,” he said. “The joy and the power of music is just incredible thing to use for the good of the world.”
Therein lies the message of the Spring Gala and underscores why even a Mets fan like Ginstling embraces a Yankee in the house. The eclectic bill on Wednesday is designed to introduce new audiences to the philharmonic. Selections range from a suite from Richard Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier” to two pieces from rapper Common to an aria called “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5,” sung by the South Korean soprano Hera Hyesang Park.
“I think that’s what I’m so excited about,” Ginstling said. “We’re gonna get a ton of Bernie Williams fans in the house that night who probably will be hearing the New York Philharmonic for the first time. It’ll be great for them to hear Bernie, but we want them to hear the orchestra play Strauss. And we want them to hear the orchestra play Nina Shekhar, this up-and-coming composer whose piece we’re playing.
“We’re hoping that they’ll get hooked not just by Bernie, but by all of this repertoire, and they’ll come back.”
Until then, Williams sometimes wakes up unexpectedly at 2:30 a.m. and reaches for his guitar. Still half-awake, he’ll strum until the notes sound just as they should before allowing himself to drift back to sleep.
“That’s the level of preparation you need for an event like this,” he said. “Because when the nerves come in, you want to still be in control and not freeze when the situation arises. The only antidote to that is being well-prepared.
“That’s true of doing anything that requires the spotlight and great expectations and great pressures.”
Williams hardly is the first ballplayer to make news with his music. As far back as 1964, a Yankees bus ride turned tense when Yogi Berra grew tired of hearing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” as played on the harmonica by a utility infielder named Phil Linz.
But that was the “New York Phil harmonica.” The New York Philharmonic is a whole different ballgame.
“If anything,” Williams said, “baseball taught me to be able to perform under pressure, and this is definitely going put that to the test.”

‘EASY’ DOES IT | Korean singer-songwriter Shaun reflects on his musical journey
- John Eiron R. Francisco
- April 28, 2024
- 3 minute read
Maybe you’re one of those who danced along or got lost in the heartfelt lyrics of his electronic pop music like “Way Back Home,” which tops on all major music platforms, a song by a South Korean singer-songwriter, music producer, and DJ, Kim Yoon-Ho, professionally known as SHAUN.
SHAUN kicked off his music journey in the summer of 2015 by making waves on the DJ survival TV show, “HEADLINER”. Alongside his DJ endeavors, he’s flexed his producing muscles on various projects, collaborating with big names in the Korean music scene like BOA, EXO, SHINEE, F(X), GIRLS GENERATION, 4MINUTE, EPICHIGH, LEE SEUNG HWAN, YOUNHA, and more, that showcases his versatility and establishing himself as a reputable producer.
In 2013, he dropped his solo tracks, “Silence” and “Curtain Call,” under the banner of a Spanish music label, Mirage Records.
Throughout his flourishing music career, and despite the passage of years, most of his music still hits the mark among the countless music releases by various artists. Undoubtedly, amidst the accolades received by these artists, each of them interprets success differently. While some gauge success by the volume of recognition they garner, others measure it by the size of their audience.
However, SHAUN told the Soundstrip that he personally places more importance on the fulfillment he received from his own music rather than comparing it to others’. He strives to create music that resonates deeply with himself, aiming to produce quality work that connects with listeners on a profound level.
While success and fame may come as a result, he doesn’t prioritize chasing these aspects over making authentic music. He feels that placing too much emphasis on industry expectations can detract from the genuine purpose of music-making.
The essence of his music extends beyond himself but it serves as a conduit for human expression and emotion.
He emphasized that music is made because musicians love making it and listeners enjoy it, rather than being solely driven by the industry’s demands or trends.
SHAUN draws inspiration from the inherent magic found within music and the transformative moments it evokes. And these experiences fuel his creativity and drive his artistic endeavors forward.
“To be honest, I think that there is no goal in such a scene in the music business. It’s not something like there is a final line to pass through while running. It may differ from many artists or many people, but I do feel that my goal is just to have my music reach out to many people,” he said.
Animation and Vintage Tunes
However, aside from his fundamental belief in the importance of human connection as a music artist, it’s evident that his music is simply delightful to listen to—upbeat, refreshing, and timeless.
When asked about his creative inspirations, SHAUN shared with Soundstrip that he was technically sparked by animation and old music. He mentioned how these genres really resonate with him, and he spends a lot of time listening to various types of music, exploring different sounds and styles.
According to SHAUN, there are valuable lessons to be learned from all kinds of music and scenes, but the timeless charm of old pop music holds a special place in his heart.
SHAUN boasts a monthly Spotify listenership of 2.7 million, with several of his tracks amassing millions of plays. “Way Back Home” featuring Conor Maynard leads the pack with over 350 million plays, closely followed by the original Korean version with over 200 million plays. Additionally, “Steal the Show” has garnered 7 million plays, while his latest release, “Easy,” has already reached half a million plays at the time of writing.
SHAUN characterized “Easy” as both refined and catchy, noting that many find this blend particularly refreshing.
He found motivation from the 80s for this track, crafting its guitar and synth elements with a stylish and trendy melody reminiscent of the sounds and styles of yesteryears.
When you listen to this song, you’ll find yourself wondering just how difficult or easy it is to love.
The lyrics of “Easy” express the struggle of moving on from a past relationship.
The singer acknowledges the pain of not understanding why things ended and the difficulty of letting go.
They reflect on the memories and the lingering feelings for their former partner, wondering if it’s possible to make the process easier.
Throughout the song, there’s a sense of longing and confusion about whether to hold on or let go completely.
When asked about future collaborations, SHAUN mentioned that there are currently no collaborations in the works, but he does have plans to release a new EP in late April. The EP consists of three tracks that were previously released but have been re-recorded with Japanese lyrics. Additionally, it features one original new track.

Tom Wilson's memoir-turned-musical brings 'celebration of Indigenous identity' to Hamilton stage
Beautiful scars will run at theatre aquarius from april 24 to may 11.
Social Sharing
When Mohawk artist Tom Wilson was writing his best-selling memoir Beautiful Scars , he'd often read passages out loud to himself, to hear how they sounded "in the air."
This week, Wilson will watch actors sing some of those same words to hundreds of people — as the musical inspired by his memoir, and of the same name, premiers at Hamilton's Theatre Aquarius on April 24.
"Hearing them emoted from people who have been generous enough to give everything they've got to every word, man, that's an emotional journey and one that I wasn't expecting," the homegrown music icon told CBC Hamilton.
- Hamilton artist Tom Wilson hopes new film will help put 'Mohawk culture into the light where it belongs'
Creating the musical in Hamilton was a natural fit, said Wilson.
His hometown has inspired his rock music and art for decades. As chronicled in his memoir, Wilson was raised on East 36th Street by a couple who he later discovered were not his biological parents.
The musical will follow Wilson as he discovers his Indigenous heritage and then traces his roots back to the Mohawk Nation of Kahnawà:ke, just south of Montreal.
"I'm offering to the theatre a celebration of Indigenous identity and celebration of self-discovery," Wilson said.
"It rarely happens. The Indigenous world does not necessarily feel welcome in the theatre experience mainly because it is such a deeply, deeply rooted colonial institution."
'Unapologetically Indigenous'
The play will be among the first "unapologetically Indigenous" autobiographical musicals in the country, said Mary Francis Moore , Theatre Aquarius's artistic director, who's also directing Beautiful Scars .
When she first read the book in 2017, she said she was not only "shocked and blown away by the story" but also convinced it was made to be a musical.
- How a fateful limo ride led Tom Wilson to his Mohawk roots
"Tom is such a poet and words of his books feel like lyrics sometimes and you just kind of felt this musical underscore," Moore said. "You feel music in every story he tells."
Wilson has been a member of Canadian bands like Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Junkhouse and currently Lee Harvey Osmond, but he was clear he didn't want the play to become a rock star biopic, said Moore.
Instead, Wilson's character, played by Métis actor Sheldon Elter, finds himself in different situations where he's flooded by visuals, music and memories that eventually lead him to the truth, Moore said.
Wilson created the musical alongside Shaun Smyth, an actor born in Glasgow and raised in Calgary. Wilson also wrote the musical score, while his son Thompson Wilson Shaw, 31, plays the younger version of Wilson.
Shaw, also a musician, started travelling with Wilson when he was 11 years old and "grew up backstage," Wilson said. They've collaborated together on many artistic projects, although acting wasn't one of them until now.
"I didn't know that he could act, and I don't think he knew if he could act, but he can — so that worked out really good," said Wilson.
If there's a message Wilson wants to leave the audience with, it's that Canada can do better for Indigenous people.
"This country is responsible for some of the grossest and most inhumane attempts to wipe out a civilization in the history of mankind," he said. "It would be really wise for us to start having a conversation about this and taking some action."
The play runs from April 24 to May 11.

ABOUT JOURNEY
Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.
JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.
The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire
now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.
Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.
With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

Album chronicling Seventeen's 9-yr journey released
Seventeen-new album
SEOUL, April 29 (Yonhap) -- K-pop boy group Seventeen returned Monday with a compilation album, "17 is Right Here," chronicling its 9-year history.
"The album depicted everything about Seventeen since its debut," member Mingyu said during a press conference in Seoul to mark the release. "It chronicles the group's musical journey and marks a new beginning."
The two-CD album features 33 tracks, including self-produced lead tracks from the group's Korean and Japanese albums since its debut in 2015 and four new singles led by "Maestro."
Jeonghan, another member, said the inclusion of four new singles reflects the team's efforts to make it a quality album.
"More than just a collection of Seventeen's hits, the album aims to depict the group's thoughts, aspirations and the future it wants to create together with Carat," he said, using the name of the group's fandom.
Contained on the first CD are the lead single, "Maestro," three new songs from the group's units, and Korean-language versions of the main tracks on the group's Japanese albums, such as "Call Call Call!," "Happy Ending," "Fallin' Flower," "24H" and "Not Alone."
The second CD comprises the group's hit Korean songs, including "Adore U," "Mansae," "Pretty U," "Nice," "Fear," "Left & Right," "Super" and "God of Music."
The new unit songs on the first CD are "Lalali" by a hip-hop unit, "Spell" by a performance unit and "Cheers to Youth" by a vocal unit.
The 13-piece group debuted in May 2015 under Pledis Entertainment, a sublabel of Hybe.
It has since made history as the first-K-pop artist to sell over 6 million copies of a single album with its 10th EP, "FML." Additionally, both "FML" and the group's 11th EP, "Seventeenth Heaven," have peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Seventeen members shared their memories from the past nine years, revealing that they sometimes encountered disagreements. However, they emphasized how these experiences ultimately helped strengthen their bond.
"I wonder if I'll be able to ever meet such members again. I feel like I've met lifelong friends. I want to continue working hard so that many juniors can dream big by watching us," Hoshi said.
The group has announced a busy year ahead, beginning with the release of the compilation album and another new album.
Having wrapped up the Korean leg of its tour with concerts at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Saturday and Sunday, the group will continue the tour in Japanese stadiums, such as Nagai Stadium in Osaka and Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, next month.
In June, it will become the first K-pop act to perform on the main stage of the Glastonbury Festival in Britain. The team will also grace the stage of Lollapalooza Berlin in Germany in September, further connecting with its international fanbase.
The group pledged to continue working hard to reward the love and energy it has received from fans.
"We're grateful for being able to live a life like this every day," S.Coups said. "We will become Seventeen who can make fans happy and give back the love we received in many places."

Today, as we celebrate the feast of St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, known for his devout prayer and fasting, dedicated his life to serving God and his community through preaching, writing, and administering sacraments. His compassionate care extended to the poor, sick, and Austrian soldiers afflicted by a plague epidemic. In 1621, he embarked on a mission to combat the spread of Calvinist Protestantism, armed with only a Bible, prayer book, crucifix, and the Capuchin rule. Despite facing hostility, Fidelis tirelessly preached in Catholic churches, public spaces, and even among Calvinist gatherings, successfully bringing many back to the Church.
