Best of Britain (11 Days) Tour

  • Coach / Bus

Best of Britain (11 Days)

This was our first trip to the UK. The tour covered all we wanted to see. The coach was comfortable and the drivers very friendly. Patricia was an excellent guide very caring and knowledgeable about the history of the UK. The Isle of Skye section needs to be rethought - a long day with not a lot of the Isle covered. The local guide at Liverpool could not be heard on the walking tour. Very satisfied with the 11 day tour and would recommend it to travelers looking to see a large area of the UK.

Thank you for the tour. Our Tour Guide Bella was fantastic, and our driver excellent. My only complaint would be that communication was poor prior to arrival. I had a number of times where I asked questions that were never responded to, let all be answered. That needs to be improved particularly for international tourists.

Awesome tour! Tour guide Oshan and driver Germaine make a great team of getting us around to wonderful sites. Oshan is very knowledgeable on the history of all the places we visited. Germaine got us through all the tight places safely and comfortably. You'll get to see all the major areas in Great Britain, from historical cities like Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon and Liverpool to historical sites like Edinburgh Castle, Loch Ness and Stonehenge. Essential Britain Tour

Essential Britain

The boat tour in Plymouth was not worth the time and neither was the boat trip to Skye. Too little time on The Isle of Skye and at Culloden. I would rather have driven to Skye and spent more time touring there. Accommodations were overall excellent. Good locations and clean. Coach was clean and the driver was excellent however there were some issues with WiFi ports working. Some did and some worked only occasionally. The tour director was average. She was friendly and kind. She wasn’t great. Not as much fun as another tour director I’ve had. One issue I had was that because I didn’t do the Edinburgh tours (I had already seen them previously), I didn’t know what time we were leaving the next morning. I left a voice message for Marge at the hotel and she never got back to me. It wasn’t a huge issue but I was surprised she didn’t get back to me. I got up early and just asked other travelers what time we were leaving when they came down for breakfast. I could have called her cell phone number but thought she would get the message at the hotel. Overall a good trip. Worth the money.

Bonnie Scotland with London Tour

Bonnie Scotland with London

My husband and I very much enjoyed our tour through Scotland. The tour guide Tom was knowledgeable and kept us interested without drowning us in a myriad of dates and names of Kings and Queens. He was totally in control ensuring everyone was on the bus and at each event checking everything had been arranged and that our group was expected before he would let us off the bus. The Scottish driver Dave was excellent and we felt safe despite the narrow roads. On the down side, we wish we could have had more free time to explore in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. The guided tours of Glasgow and Edinburgh turned out to be pointing out various buildings on way to the castle or as we drove out of the cities on our way to the day's tour highlight rather than a proper city tour. The London part was disappointing with the aspect of being part of a tour. The hotel, although nice, was over 1 1/2 hours by bus away from King's Cross station. The tour director did not take the opportunity to point out the various historic sites along the way. Many key highlights were not included in the scheduled familiarization of London bus tour such as Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Once the bus tour was over we were left to fend for ourselves. There was no concern/interest shown to ensure transportation arrangements at the end of the tour were in hand etc...a stark contrast to the Scottish part of the trip.

What people love about England And Scotland Tours

Tom is a great guide. Would recommend the tour.
Because my original trip was cancelled by Trafalgar to rearrange a new tour was difficult I am giving a little more tolerance as the tourist industry was smashed my amended timetable cost me a lot of money The trip if your a new first trip bus tour user it’s ok far to rushed for us experienced lots 1 hour walk around s. Then bed. ie Liverpool Glasgow I won’t do another bus tour in the UK
I really enjoyed the trip

From our travelers

Windsor Castle

We had a wonderful tour. All the accommodations were first class. The very first day we saw a mile long line at Windsor Castle, but our tickets were already taken care of and we went straight in with no waiting. That was the way it was at all sights on the trip. We visited the important sights and did not have to worry about booking, driving, parking, where to stay or where to eat.

CIE Tours Customer

Gareth was a helpful tour guide.

Highly Recommend this trip of a Lifetime

I loved how we were able to see so much in such a short period of time. Everything was made easy for us such as transportation to each place (as well as to and from the airport) and most of our meals (all breakfasts) were covered. I also love that it was affordable and everything was including in the price. I cannot pick a favorite place I loved it all. I wish I could have spent more time at each place but I understand it needed to be that way to fit everything in.

So much to see and do on the’Best of Britain’ tour!

Seeing so much of historical and modern Great Britain was enlightening. I can now put people and places in the country in perspective. Our guide was most helpful with this aspect. I felt the trip had great value for the money spent. Thank you!

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

There is a smoking ban in public places throughout Scotland. The Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa is a non-smoking property, with no 'smoking' rooms available.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to the United Kingdom. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of the United Kingdom to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

England, Scotland & Wales involves a considerable amount of walking. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. The castle visits at Edinburgh, Stirling and Caernarfon and the visit to Levens Hall & Gardens are challenging for those with difficulty walking as they have steep steps, cobblestone walkways and hillside gardens. Some walks can be extensive on flat terrain in places such as Stratford-upon-Avon.

PLEASE NOTE: We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate of the United Kingdom is notoriously variable and changeable from day to day. Weather is generally cool to mild with frequent cloud cover and rain, but occasional settled spells of weather occur in all seasons. As a general rule, the western side of the United Kingdom is cloudier, wetter, and milder in winter, with cooler summers than the eastern side. The eastern side of the United Kingdom is drier the year round, with a tendency for summer rain to be heavier than that of winter. You will rarely experience severe or unpleasant weather for long; however, you should be prepared for rapid changes of weather in all seasons. There is good reason for weather being a major talking point in the United Kingdom!

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in the United Kingdom is moderate but unpredictable. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket and tie for men are acceptable dining attire, although not required. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but by all means be comfortable.

You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are also available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to The United Kingdom:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Good morning

Good evening

"What is there to not love about England. Real life castles, Princes and Princesses, stunning scenery, and historic streets lined with lively pubs everywhere you go!”

Aryan, Travel Director

Admire the British capital from the London Eye

Watch London unfurl from the iconic 135-metre height of the London Eye. The unmatched views extend in every direction, reaching Buckingham Palace, the river Thames and the famed clock tower of the Palace of Westminster. All London’s highlights in one peaceful, 30-minute rotation.

Take in the views of Britain's Lake District

Delve into Britain’s natural wonders and take in the panorama of rolling hills, rocky mountains and glittering waters of the Lake District. Abounding in outdoor opportunities from cruises to hilltop walks, you'll find serenity in this national park resting between Leeds and Glasgow.

Visit the Roman baths in Bath

Turn back the clock 2,000 years at the remarkably preserved remains of the Roman Baths. Still flowing with steaming, geothermally heated water, the ancient stone pavements reveal the culture behind the simple daily task of washing. Let time stand still staring at a spring filled with 12,000 Roman coins.

Enjoy the guided tour of Liverpool

Sink into the nostalgia of the Beatles, cruise along the Mersey River and sample real ale at the Albert Docks. A visit to Liverpool is an invitation to uncover the many layers of British culture; the UK's fifth largest city means more than the passion of its football club.

See the Stonehenge's stone monoliths

Southwest England’s soil is rich with mystery. Stand in the shadows of Stonehenge’s stone monoliths and let your imagination be sparked by the secrets of this 5,000-year history. Weighing up to 30 tonnes each, the weight of history will leave its mark on you.

Our top 5 things to do in England

Mysterious stone monoliths and preserved ancient baths prove there is so much more to see beyond the limits of London city. Let Trafalgar turn the pages of the history book that is England.

The British Museum

The British Museum is a ticket to relics that reveal some two million years of human history. Feel small standing beneath the colossal presence of Rameses II and contrast the myth and reality of Troy with the graphic world of Manga. This London highlight will take you on a journey of time travel.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum takes you on an unfathomable discovery of the formation of the solar system and its path to the present. Trace the origin of our species under the shade of a T. rex and glimpse rare meteorites straight from the surface of Mars. If this doesn’t shake you, the earthquake simulator most certainly will.

Victoria and Albert

The Victoria and Albert Museum is an encounter with the very best of human creativity in almost every medium. Here you will design your own bioplastic bag, step behind the creative lens of Christian Dior and take a literal walk in history’s shoes admiring a 2,000 strong collection spanning 3,000 years.

Best museums in England

A cultural epicentre of the planet steeped in royal heritage, the museums of England sparkle like the Crown Jewels. Let Trafalgar guide you through the very best the region has to offer.

Fish & Chips

It’s hard to separate the partnership of fish 'n' chips. Try this traditional meal both from a gourmet restaurant and a local 'chippie' wrapped in newspaper. Always with lashings of salt and vinegar on top.

Sunday Roast

Embrace the traditional English Sunday lunch with roast meats, a side of vegetables and an indulgent topping of gravy. The joy of this simple culinary experience is best served in a traditional English pub complete with football on the screen and a few stouts.

Full English breakfast

The full English breakfast is a requisite of a trip to England. A hearty plate piled with fried bacon, grilled tomatoes, buttered toast, mushrooms, eggs, beans, and black puddingis hard to resist.

Best food in England

Food is at the heart of every journey when you travel to England. This is a country of warm and hearty meals, our trips will show you the very best of it.

What to pack for England

People packing for a tour

With a high chance of experiencing four seasons in one day, an umbrella is a must when visiting England, both for rainy days and occasions when the sun beams down.

Digital maps

It's always good to have a backup of digital maps on standby when you're out exploring in your own time. Download them prior to your trip so you can reach them even when your phone is offline.

Travel adaptor

Though many hotels will have adaptors available for use, being prepared with your own will ensure you're always charged and ready to go.

A good book

With a seemingly infinite list of parks found in England, don't forget to pack a novel and immerse yourself in a good book should the occasion arise.

With days full of adventure and numerous souvenirs tempting your strolls, a day pack will ensure your hands always remain free. Split the weight across your back with a double strap bag for extra comfort.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

  • Scottish cuisine relies on readily available ingredients like game, dairy, and fish, with little use of exotic spices. Pickled kippers and smoked salmon are popular, as well as hearty dishes like Scotch broth (stew of meat and root vegetables) and haggis (a savory pudding of sheep innards). Scotch whisky is a legendary local spirit, and Scottish ales are world-famous.
  • For traditional English fare at a reasonable price, try a pub meal of fish and chips or bangers and mash. Stilton cheese, steak and kidney pie, and Cumberland sausages are also worth a try.
  • Modern-day London boasts an array of diverse international restaurants. Popular options for the adventurous palate include Indian, Thai, Chinese, Indonesian, Greek, and West African cuisine.Sip afternoon tea with delicious finger sandwiches and scones at Harrods for the ultimate in English tradition.
  • The small country of Wales has a reputation for interesting local cuisine. Most visitors will love Welsh cakes, which resemble a mix between a cookie and a pancake, and bara brith , a sweet, dense bread. Welsh rarebit, a savory cheese sauce, is popular on bread as well as served as a dip. Seafood fans will love the ubiquity of fresh cockles (small saltwater clams) and the more adventurous should try laverbread , seaweed that’s been boiled and fried and is often served with buttered toast.

  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though charges may apply.
  • There is no internet access on the motor coach.

  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 5pm on tour.
  • You will use the Pound sterling on tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.

Crowning Beauty

Pack your tweed and tartans for a Cosmos tour of Britain! From the castles and cathedrals of London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff to the charming pubs on every corner, you’ll experience the best of England, the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands, and the enchanting villages and valleys of Wales. Visit prehistoric Stonehenge, the battlefield of Culloden Moor, Shakespeare’s birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon, and The Beatles’ home city of Liverpool. Our Great Britain tours conquer the must-sees, with a generous serving of new discoveries for good measure.

York, Britain

Britain Highlights

The majestic city of York is a place where medieval history meets modern-day delights. When you walk along York’s ancient city walls and get cosy in its pubs, you’ll enjoy the perfect blend of past and present.

The postcard-perfect remote fishing village of Ullapool provides a quiet getaway along the shores of Lochbroom in the Northern Highlands of Scotland. Situated among mountains and rocky coasts, breathe in the surrounding natural beauty on a day spent traversing the Scottish countryside.

Interestingly juxtaposed between an ancient fort and a modern waterfront, Wales’ compact, multicultural capital certainly packs a punch. See the city’s major attractions on an orientation drive, including Cardiff Castle, Cathays Park, and Millennium Stadium.

From Castles To Roman Ruins: 10 UNESCO Sites To Explore In Britain

  • The United Kingdom has the eighth most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world, with a total of 33 sites across the country.
  • Many of the British World Heritage Sites are cultural sites, such as cathedrals, castles, and ancient ruins.
  • These sites offer unique and significant historical and architectural attractions, from the oldest church in England to the iconic Stonehenge and Tower of London.

The United Kingdom has the eighth most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world (it has a total of 33 sites across the country). The United Kingdom has a few natural sites, while most of them are cultural sites.

This list will be limited to just the sites in Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales but not Northern Ireland - so the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland does not make the list). Here are ten of the British World Heritage Sites worth visiting around the country, from Scotland's remote St. Kilda island to Westminster Abbey in London .

Canterbury Cathedral & St Martin's Church, England

St Martin's Church has its origins in the Roman period and is now regarded as the oldest church in England (taking its present form during the Anglo-Saxon period).

The nearby Canterbury Cathedral is one of the largest and most important cathedrals in England and the seat of the Church of England (the UNESCO listing also includes the historic St Augustine's Abbey).

Frontiers Of The Roman Empire, England & Scotland

The Frontiers of the Roman Empire include both the famous stone Hadrian's Wall in northern England and the lesser-known earthen Antoine Wall deep in Scotland.

Hadrian's Wall was first built in 122 AD, and the Antonine Wall in 142 AD. The Romans withdrew back to Hadrian's Wall soon after building the Antonine Wall, and it remained the frontier until the Romans left Britain.

  • Date Inscribed: 1984

The City Of Bath, England

The small southern English city of Bath is remarkable for both its excellent Georgian architecture (from when Bath was a very fashionable destination for the English elite) and for its well-preserved Roman baths.

Today, visitors come to see the Roman baths and enjoy one of the most atmospheric cities in England.

The Heart Of Neolithic Orkney, Scotland

The Orkney Islands are remote islands off the northern coast of Scotland with their own identity.

These windswept northerly isles are famous for their excellent Neolithic (Stone Age) ruins that include a henge, chambered tombs, a village, and the oldest known standing house in Northern Europe (the Knap of Howar).

  • Date Inscribed: 1999

The Palace Of Westminster, England

The Palace of Westminster is more than just one of the best UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the UK (not just Britain). It is among the most iconic buildings in England (it hosts the Houses of Parliament and has Big Ben).

The UNESCO listing also includes the neighboring Westminster Abbey, which has been a royal abbey for around a thousand years. The abbey is the resting place of many English and British monarchs and is where they are coronated (most recently, King Charles III in 2023).

  • Date Inscribed: 1987 (modified in 2008)

St Kilda Island, Scotland

St Kilda is more than a ghost town; it is a ghost island. The remote Scottish island was inhabited for more than 2,000 years before finally becoming abandoned in 1930.

Today, the isle preserves many of the old ruins and is an important hotspot for seabirds (notably, it has the world's largest gannet colony and around 136,000 pairs of puffins).

  • Date Inscribed: 1987 (modified 2005 and 2008)

Stonehenge & Avebury, England

It should come as little surprise that Stonehenge is a UNESCO site - it is perhaps the most famous Neolithic site in the world.

But Stonehenge is not alone; it is one of many ancient Neolithic and Bronze Age sites in the vicinity (the Avebury Henge is even older).

  • Date Inscribed: 1986 (modified 2008)

The Tower Of London, England

The Tower of London is one of the most famous Medieval castles in England. It was first started by none other than William the Conqueror (who conquered England in 1066).

The Tower is today among the best UNESCO sites in Britain, serving as a museum that is open to the public. Visitors can also see the precious Crown Jewels in the Tower as they tour it.

The Castles Of King Edward in Gwynedd, Wales

When people think of great Medieval castles, they are likely thinking of a fortress like the four English castles built by King Edward in northern Wales (the English king in the movie Braveheart ). These four castles were built between 1272 and 1307 with the intention of subduing Wales under English rule.

Today, they are considered some of the best military architecture of Medieval England. The Castles are preserved as Harlech, Conwy, Caernarfon, and Beaumaris.

  • Date Inscribed: 1986

Blenheim Palace, England

Blenheim Palace is said to be the greatest palace in Britain and is open to the public. It is the only non-royal and non-episcopal country house in England to have the title of the palace and is the residence of the 1st Duke of Marlborough.

It is one of the best UNESCO Heritage Sites in Britain and is recognizable by many as it is a favored filming location for many movies and series.

Peter Oosterhuis, noted player and broadcaster, dies at 75

Peter Oosterhuis had a memorable career—three of them in fact—the sum of which echoed a movie title, a wonderful life until it slowly was eroded by an insidious disease. Oosterhuis died Thursday, one day shy of his 76th birthday and 10 years after having been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born just outside London, Oosterhuis compiled an impressive playing record that included everything but a major championship. When he quit playing competitively, he became a club professional for a time at the prestigious Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, then eventually found his niche as a broadcaster—first for Sky Sports, then Golf Channel and finally with CBS Sports, where he worked until his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2014.

Oosty, as he was frequently and affectionately called, won tournaments all over the world. His lone PGA Tour victory in 343 official starts came in the Canadian Open in 1981, where he beat Jack Nicklaus, Bruce Lietzke and Andy North by a stroke. The $76,000 first-place check was more than he had earned in any previous season.

He also won seven European Tour events. Meanwhile, he tied for third in the 1973 Masters, finished second in the British Open the following year, tied for second in the British Open in 1982, and had two top-10s in the U.S. Open (1975 and 1977).

Oosterhuis won on the PGA and European Tour and played in six straight Ryder Cups.

Augusta National

Oosterhuis also played on six straight Great Britain & Ireland or European Ryder Cup teams, all of which lost to the U.S. teams. On two occasions, he led his team in points, and he remains tied for the all-time lead in most singles victories with six.

His second career, though not a long one, was as a club professional, first at Forsgate Country Club in Jamesburg, N.J., before moving to Riviera Country Club.

“I’ll tell you why I left the job at Riviera,” Oosterhuis told Golf Digest’s Guy Yocom of his departure in 1993. “I met Roothie [Ruth Ann], who was a member, and we fell in love and got married. There is nothing clubs dislike more than the idea of a romance between the pro and a member, so I fell into disfavor with some of the more staunch people in charge there.”

FROM THE ARCHIVE: You can expect Peter Oosterhuis to win, but not to conform (1975)

He soon took a job as a broadcaster for Sky Sports in the United Kingdom, the start of a third career that gave him a profile higher than even that he had experienced as an accomplished golfer.

In 1995, Oosterhuis was offered a job with a new television entity called the Golf Channel, to serve as an analyst on its European Tour events, working alongside Renton Laidlaw.

“For 2½ years he and the wry Scottish anchor, Renton Laidlaw, have conducted a civilized dialogue, in back-of-the-church voices, while watching golf balls veer and wobble on bumpy European greens,” John Garrity wrote for Sports Illustrated. “Oosterhuis's voice—precise, preternaturally calm and authoritative—is the one that after an hour or so seems to be generated from somewhere in your own head. Says Laidlaw, ‘It's very listenable, a voice you never get tired of.’”

tour of britain scotland

In 1997, CBS Sports gave Oosterhuis a tryout, installing him in the 14th hole tower at the Masters and the PGA Championship, which led to his being offered a full-time position in the fall of 1997.

“I was a fan of his before a lot of people at CBS even found out about him,” CBS golf anchor Jim Nantz told David Feherty. “It’s hard for athletes to step in and sound like a trained broadcaster. If you didn’t know better, you’d think Oosty had been doing this all his life.”

He was a fixture for CBS Sports golf telecasts for the following 17-plus years, even occupying the analyst’s chair next to Nantz when Ken Venturi began to scale back the number of tournaments he worked. Then came the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.

“During the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla,” Nantz told Golf Digest, “Gary McCord asked me, ‘Have you noticed something amiss with Peter? He doesn't seem himself.’ No, not at all, I said. Gary said, ‘Well, keep an eye on him during dinner tonight, and let’s talk tomorrow.’ I watched and listened to Peter closely and didn't pick up on anything. That, after being close to my father throughout his struggle with Alzheimer's. Soon after that, it become more apparent that Peter was struggling. Alzheimer's is such an insidious disease. I'm using every tool at my disposal to fund the research necessary to help Peter. In fact, he's being treated by a team of doctors at the Nantz Center.”

Nantz’s father was a victim of Alzheimer’s, leading his son to start the Nantz National Alzheimer Center in Houston.

“Shortly after I was diagnosed, I got a call from Jim Nantz,” Oosterhuis told Golf Digest in 2014. “His first words were, ‘this can’t be true’ … I’ve always felt close to Jim,18 years doing TV together created a close relationship, but he took it another step. He could sense that Roothie and I were completely lost, confused, and a little scared. He told me some things that were so caring and compassionate. Then he immediately arranged for us to travel to Houston and get checked out more thoroughly.

“It started like this. I’ve had OCD since I was a young man. I used to keep super-detailed logs of every shot at every tournament…When I moved to commentating, the OCD worked to my advantage. I’d study facts, statistics and tendencies and then run them into my commentary. A couple of years ago, I found I was coming up blank on this information. When an OCD person can’t obsess the way he used to, he starts to obsess about his inability to obsess … So I went to a neurologist here in Charlotte, and in July of 2014 I got the diagnosis: early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.”

Oosterhuis retired to a quiet, private life with wife Roothie at their home in Charlotte, N.C., alas, waiting out the inevitable, the conclusion to what indeed was a wonderful life.

Why Mahler's Second Symphony makes mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill beam

Karen Cargill has certainly scored successes at some of the opera world’s most prestigious venues like New York’s Metropolitan Opera and Great Britain’s Glyndebourne Festival. The Scottish mezzo-soprano even goes so far as to call herself a “stage animal.”

But most of Cargill’s time is devoted to symphonic concerts, and that’s just the way she likes it. “I love my orchestra work. It just feeds my soul. I love the fast pace of coming in for a week and really working at a high, high level to create these wonderful pieces,” she said from Philadelphia, where she was recently performing with that city’s famed orchestra.

She will return to the United States for a set of concerts May 23-25 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, serving as soloist in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (1888-93), often referred to as the Resurrection Symphony, a work she has performed many times.

“It’s a piece that means so much to me,” she said. “In any troubled times, we can find solace in music, and this is one of those pieces that speaks directly to the human condition and that sense of community, that sense of togetherness that we need to feel and don’t always feel. It speaks to there being a greater purpose in life. It’s one of my top five pieces, not only to sing but to listen to.”

Cargill is a particular fan of the Auferstehn (resurrection) section when the chorus enters about halfway through the final movement. “I don’t think I’ve ever been in a performance,” she said,” where I haven’t had a beaming smile on my face at the end as I sing with the chorus, because of that mass choir and orchestra and everyone making music at the highest level and just throwing themselves into this huge beast of thing. I think that’s one of the great powers of music, the sense of community of bringing people together to make it, and the sense of bringing people together to listen to it.”

"I don’t think I’ve ever been in a performance . . . where I haven’t had a beaming smile on my face at the end as I sing with the chorus, because of that mass choir and orchestra and everyone making music at the highest level and just throwing themselves into this huge beast of thing."

The CSO announced in April that Neeme Järvi will lead these concerts, substituting for Esa-Pekka Salonen, who withdrew for personal reasons (he is to receive the distinguished 2024 Polar Music Prize in Stockholm on May 21). The 86-year-old Estonian-born conductor, who has a discography of more than 400 recordings, made his CSO debut in 1985 and most recently led the orchestra in December 2017.

Cargill has never worked with Järvi, but she knows his work well, because he served as principal conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 1984-88 and has returned to the ensemble many times since. “He’s someone I really respect,” she said, “so I’m very happy to be able to  make music with him. Really looking forward to that.”

The mezzo-soprano grew up in Arbroath, a seaside town on Scotland’s east coast. “My house was always full of music when I was growing up, but it was never full of classical music. It was not something that my parents were into or knew anything about,” Instead, they were fans of the Beatles, Wings and Boney M., and when Cargill was just 2 or 3, she could already sing some of the songs of those pop groups.

Indeed, she showed enough talent that an aunt recommended to her parents that she take vocal lessons, which she started when she was 8 or 9 with a local teacher. She performed folk songs and competed in local music festivals, “I loved the way it made me feel to make music, the way it made me feel to sing,” Cargill said.

"I loved the way it made me feel to make music, the way it made me feel to sing."

After graduating from high school, she chose to remain in her native Scotland for music studies, enrolling at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) in Glasgow. “I wanted to do it in a quiet way,” she said, “where I could really discover who I was as an artist and not feel the pressure of being in a big city like London.” She has lived in Glasgow her entire adult life except for a student exchange year in Toronto, Canada, and some time early in her career in London.

The big turning point for her came in 2002 when she was a joint winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Award, an honor named for the famed English contralto, who died at 41 from cancer at the height of her career. Winners of the annual competition in Leeds have included such notable singers as bass-baritone Bryn Terfel and soprano Kate Royal. “This was my entry into the London scene,” she said. “And it was an intense period, and I’m very grateful for that. It opened an awful lot of doors for me.”

Cargill made her Scottish Opera debut in 2007 as Rosina in The Barber of Seville, and she has returned regularly to the form since. But she limits herself to one or two staged productions a year because such projects demand multiple weeks for rehearsals and performances, and she is “quite protective” of her family life.

Last summer, she appeared in Francis Poulenc’s 1956 opera The Dialogues of the Carmelites at the Glyndebourne Festival. “It’s a piece that I’m obsessed with,” she said, noting that she also performed it as a student in Toronto and returned to it with the Metropolitan Opera in 2019, a production that also included such famed singers as mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard and soprano Karita Mattila.

She had high praise for Glyndebourne’s take, which was staged by Australian director Barrie Kosky, who is based at the Komische Oper Berlin. “This production was a real look into who I was as an artist,” she said. “Barrie is someone who really gives an artist space to explore who the character is as they want to portray them, and he helps you create this beautiful rounded person.” She will be back at Glyndebourne this summer in Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde .

“When we came for Ravinia, I brought my husband and son, and we had a week in Chicago,” she said. “I just love it there.”

Cargill has not presented any solo recitals since the COVID-19 pandemic. “I haven’t really gotten my sea legs back for recitals,” she said. But she is beginning to work with her longtime collaborator, British pianist Simon Lepper, on a new such program. She likes to take her time crafting recitals, which she believes should reflect where she is both musically and personally in her life.

As noted, though, orchestral concerts continue to dominate her schedule. Cargill’s May engagement with the CSO will be her subscription series debut. “I’m very excited,” she said. The mezzo-soprano made just one previous appearance with the ensemble in 2016 at the Ravinia Festival, joining James Levine, the series’ longtime music director, who was making his first return appearance since leaving his post 23 years earlier.

Cargill has fond memories of that 2016 visit, which included an architectural boat tour and an array of other activities. “When we came for Ravinia, I brought my husband and son, and we had a week in Chicago,” she said. “I just love it there.”
