Ride Information

The Tour of the Battenkill Gran Fondo is a 75-mile mass-start event for riders wanting a challenging, scenic, and competitive race. Riders are grouped by ability at the starting line and begin simultaneously at 9:00 a.m. with a neutral roll out. The first 7 miles will feature a full police escort and rolling road closure. After that, the roads will be open to the public, but traffic is very sparse. Course marshals will be stationed at all critical intersections. Neutral service is dedicated with cars and/or motorcycles. Sag wagons are also provided for riders not able to complete the course.

There have been a lot of superlatives thrown around about the Tour of the Battenkill since its inception in 2004: “America’s biggest one-day road race,” “the toughest one-day road race in the country,” “the greatest number of flat tires at a cycling event…”

Its steep, punchy climbs help shatter the field of over 2,000 riders, with a group of six finishing together considered large. Of course, plenty of other races get more vertical, and with a course length of 75 miles and winning times of 3:00 – 3:30 hours, it’s not overly long. But the loop course that starts and finishes at the Washington County Fairgrounds is unlike any other in the US. It’s a back-road journey through open farmland, narrow canopies of trees, and a covered bridge — the kind of naturally car-free, rural roads you wish you could ride everyday.

Battenkill’s numerous dirt sections are its trademark, and therein lies one of the special ingredients that have led to its popularity. Whether it’s actually the toughest one-day race in America is a matter of opinion, but to many of the riders — especially those new to racing — it certainly feels like it. The list of DNFs isn’t overly long, but the dirt sections can often result in punctured tires, so be sure to bring plenty of spares, pumps, and CO2 cartridges, or perhaps tubeless tires, sealant, or extra-big rubber.

Rather than being a discouragement, the flat-tire factor actually contributes to the day’s drama. It means uncertainty and luck that could work for or against you. Moreover, the punctures come because you’re out there flying down gravel roads in a cloud of dust, with a number pinned to your back, and a tunnel-vision goal of getting to the front and not being gapped.

The Tour of the Battenkill Gran Fondo is truly a one-of-a-kind race for those seeking a serious challenge shrouded in pastoral beauty. The result is that everyone who finishes, even everyone who starts, goes home with rich stories to tell.

The Tour of the Battenkill--the country's biggest one-day race--is as beautiful as it is brutal

this image is not available

At 62.6 miles, the 2009 Battenkill was the longest race I'd done in about 15 years, so I was a little unsure about my prerace routine. Arriving in Cambridge two hours early, I watched cars fill the parking lot while cyclists, pale from the Northeastern winter, gathered in various stages of kitting up. They debated clothing, tire selection, the number of bottles or tubes to carry and what tire pressure to run—important decisions due to 15 miles of gravel and dirt roads, plus a few miles of pavement rumored to be at least as rough. The more than 1,500 amateurs left in waves of 100 or more, each with lead and follow vehicles forming a rolling enclosure. Even with a neutral start through town, my Cat 3 group was nervous and twitchy as we tried to settle into our places in the peloton. Some fought to the front, some fought to hold their place in the middle, and some just seemed to fight no matter where they were. I found a spot in the top 20 or so, in sight of the front but not on it.

I knew we were riding amid great beauty—we passed through a covered bridge at one point—but anticipation of the hills and gravel kept the group on edge, requiring a conscious effort to remain focused on the race. At about mile 7, we hit the first section of gravel. Around me, riders struggled to maintain their speed as the road sloped up. A wheel spun, and some shouted and swerved around the slowing rider. Racers shouted "flat!" and disappeared behind us, while others slowed from the effort or the uncertainty of handling their bikes on the loose surface. As we descended, some riders tenuously coasted down, bouncing through every bump, while others drove smoothly to the front in a way that can be achieved only by pedaling big gears in a steady, powerful cadence. The selection had started.

Midway through, about 30 miles in, I was thrilled to still be in the mix. My group was down to about 40 riders when—on open pavement—two of them touched, wobbled and went down. I thought I was clear, but crashed to the ground in an instant, then got up just as fast and began chasing the pack. When the road turned to gravel, I caught some riders who'd been dropped. In a corner, I passed another one who, paralyzed by the fear of drifting in the gravel, rode straight off the road. When I got back to the group, I dangled on the back to recover but soon we hit more climbs— and rain —and in the slick corners I found myself unable to close the gaps. I sat up a little and looked around: There were fields covered with green seedlings that, from a distance, resembled a velvety carpet; wooden buildings that listed improbably, standing in defiance of the laws of gravity; black-and-white cows peppering a muddy pasture filled with farm implements that had outlived their usefulness; hand-lettered signs offering hay, firewood, breakfast or jars of fruit. Simple, rugged beauty. I imagined racers of the distant past, when paved roads weren't an option, considering this just another race. I like to think of it that way too.

2009 Battenkill pro men: Nydam wins.

It wasn’t a move meant to last, but when Scott Nydam , of BMC Racing, rolled across the line to win the Tour of the Battenkill pro men’s Invitational following a 112-mile breakaway — about half of it solo — the rider from Sebastopol, California, said the victory was a long time coming.

“Five months of training and a lot of preparation went into this,” Nydam said. “It all came out today.”

Nydam held off a late charge from OUCH-Maxxis rider Karl Menzies, while Francois Parisien, of Team Planet Energy, after a 60-mile solo chase, held on for third.

The first year pro event, held one day after 1,500 amateurs raced on the same course, sent 158 professional and elite riders over a rolling course that featured 30 miles of dirt roads in upstate New York’s Battenkill Valley.

Only 12 miles into the 124-mile, two lap race, Nydam and OUCH’s Bobby Lea launched an attack over the 18 percent dirt climb on Juniper Swamp Road. The two worked together to build a maximum lead of near five minutes by the end of the first lap.

2009 Battenkill pro men: Nydam and Lea on Meeting House Road.

“You have to have a lot of things go your way. I know some people were trying to chase, so my goals kept changing. First I just wanted to make it easier for my teammates, but then it became a situation where I could actually win,” Nydam said.

Behind, the field was shrinking due to both the race’s challenging terrain and a high number of flats.

SRAM Racing Service mechanics Kenny Ambach and Tom “TJ” Balzano said after the race they had changed about 38 wheels.

Nydam was among those falling victim to the rocky roads, puncturing at the end of the first lap, but a quick wheel change from the team car kept him rolling at a safe distance. The field began a concerted chase shortly after passing through the finish line in Cambridge, as a flurry of attacks started to bring back the breakaway on a windy stretch of road between Cambridge and the Eagleville covered bridge.

The gap had come down to 1:30 when Nydam attacked Lea on the paved climb up Perry Hill Road, with 55 miles remaining in the race. Lea continued a solo effort while Nydam powered away, quickly opening his gap to the field back to near two minutes.

Feeling his moment had come, the BMC rider called “Nydam solo” on team radio.

Behind, Parisien attacked out of the field. He quickly caught Lea, and the two worked together, bringing Nydam’s gap back to around one minute.

Parisien, of Montreal, said after the race that even with most teams not represented in the break, there was not much cooperation in the chase effort. Instead of burning the teams’ matches in a chase, the team began a barrage attacks, eventually springing Parisien free.

2009 Battenkill pro men: Riders scamble to find the best line on Juniper Swamp.

“I caught the OUCH guy pretty quickly, so I thought I had a chance to get to Scott, but I could only close the gap to 45 seconds,” Parisien said. The 26-year old, coming off of a second place in the Tour of Cuba, would eventually drop Lea, and try to bridge alone, but Nydam was proving untouchable and the gap to the field reached near six minutes as the peloton crested the paved Joe Bean Road, the race’s longest climb.

Although initially reluctant to chase a break containing Lea, OUCH came to the front in race’s final 25 kilometers when it was clear that no other team was going to pick up the pace making. The team put former national cyclocross champion Tim Johnson to work across the steep rollers on Meeting House Road, in a last ditch effort to catch the charging Nydam.

“It was the first break of the day, so we didn’t think it would go to the line,” said OUCH manager Mike Tamayo. “Bobby is really more of a sprinter for us, so for him to be in a 100-mile break was pretty good.”

2009 Battenkill pro men: Parisien rides through the state forest preserve on the second lap.

With Johnson putting the pressure on, Nydam’s lead over the peloton began coming down, but he was maintaining a solid two-minute lead over Parisien. As the peloton crested the course’s final climb, Stage Road, Menzies latched onto an attack from Shawn Milne, of Team Type 1, and Chad Beyer, of BMC, and the three set off on a frenetic chase toward Nydam.

Menzies dropped Milne and Beyer in the closing kilometers, before passing a cramping Parisien to take second.

“It was hard to chase, because the roads were constantly changing direction,” Menzies said of his team’s efforts to reign Nydam in. “We didn’t expect a breakaway to go and stay on such a tough course, he must have been on a good day.”

Behind, Parisien held onto third by a second, with Milne pipping Beyer on the line for fourth.

Promoters knew they had plotted a difficult course through hilly terrain, and they were not disappointed. Of the 158 starters, only 62 finished.

Of the top finishers, all said it was among the hardest races they competed, with Parisien commenting that it was in his top-5 hardest courses, helping the event live up to its billing as “America’s Queen of the Classics.”

“I never did anything like this in America,” he said. “Maybe in Europe, where you have cobbles or something.”

2009 Battenkill pro men: The covered bridge is a scenic landmark, and a tight fit for a big pack.

  • Team OUCH’s Floyd Landis, expected to take the start Sunday, did not make the trip to Cambridge, after suffering a laceration on his shin Wednesday. In a statement posted on the team’s Web site, team medical staff felt it would be better for Landis to stay in California to recover.

In the days leading up to the race, Drake said he hoped to secure a spot on the 2010 calendar.

30th annual hot rod power tour presented by continental tire..

Click Here for the Official Route for the 2024 HOT ROD Power Tour

The 30th annual HOT ROD Power Tour Presented by Continental Tire is happening June 10 through June 14, beginning at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It is the world’s largest traveling car show and this year’s event is a record-breaker with the most registered Long Haulers in the event’s storied history.

Last year the tour rolled up the East Coast, beginning at Atlanta Motor Speedway , and in 2024, we moved into the Southeast/Midwest region for five days of cruising, drag racing, and autocrossing. The original Power Tour began as a small and intimate cruise from Los Angeles to Ohio, but it has turned into a phenomenon that attracts cars from all over the country, with a few even shipped in from overseas. Anticipation is high for this year’s event with daily car-counts expected to exceed 6,000 vehicles.

Customer

My wife & I have just completed the Journey of a Lifetime 16 day 15 night Trip as organised by Express to Russia. We also had a tour of St Petersburg & Moscow as well. The planning & execution of both trips was well above our expectations. The guides we had in all of our destinations were exceptional & the meet & greet & return to the stations went as smooth as clockwork. We had one minor hitch but that was through no fault of Express to Russia..a quick email from our Ipad had the problem resolved immediately We did have some misgivings at the start about doing the booking online ourselves but Elena was wonderful & answered all of our questions promptly & to our satisfaction. We felt comfortable with the whole process. The train trip is wonderful with Mongolia being a "special " place for us! We highly recommend Elena & her company. I am happy to answer any questions any body may wish to ask.

Thank you so very much for organizing our trip. Everything went wonderfully, and we really enjoyed our time in Russia. Moscow was beautiful, Lake Baikal was very cold, yet very fun to swim in, and the DPR Koreans that I met and made friends with in Vladivostok was beyond priceless. The guides you got for us did an exceptional job, and the drivers helped us out a lot as well. The hotels you got for us were great, and the room you got for us in the Vladivostok really made the long stay comfortable. The trains were also very enjoyable as was the Russian hospitality, although we really weren´t expecting people to be so generous or helpful. Overall, the trip was wonderful, and you arranged it magnificently. You really went out of your way to accommodate my schedule and help me with my schoolwork, so I really appreciate it; I couldn´t have done it without you. So once again, thank you for all of your efforts, and hopefully in the future you will be able to help us out again. Take care, and thank you for everything.

A train on Trans-Siberian Railway

Trans-Siberian Train

The main route of the Trans-Siberian Railway begins in Moscow and heads east to Vladivostok passing through Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Chita, Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The length of the route is 9259 km or 5753 miles. The train travels through 7 time zones and takes 8 days to complete without making overnight stops. The Trans-Siberian splits off into a few other fascinating directions as well:

Trans-Mongolian Train

The Trans-Mongolian Line was built from 1940 to 1956 between Ulan-Ude at Lake Baikal’s eastern shore and the Chinese capital Beijing. From Ulan-Ude the tracks go south towards Mongolia, crossing the great Gobi Desert and finally ending up in Beijing. This route is a mere 7867 kilometers long (Moscow - Beijing).

Trans-Manchurian Train

The Trans-Manchurian Line runs on the same route as the Trans-Siberian as far as Tarskaya, which is a few hundred miles east of Baikal. From Tarskaya, the line runs southeast into China near Zabaikalsk and makes its way down to Beijing. This route is a 9001 kilometres long (Moscow - Beijing).

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

Where does the trans-siberian railway start and where does it end.

The Trans-Siberian Railway starts in Moscow and extends all the way to Vladivostok on the Pacific Ocean. This route connects the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Are Beijing and Ulan Bator stops along the Trans-Siberian railway?

Beijing and Ulan Bator are parts of Trans-Mongolian railway - an offshoot of the main Trans-Siberian Railway. There are many options to arrange your travel: to visit Ulan Bator and or follow the Trans-Siberian railway to or from Vladivostok.

Can I use the hop-on hop-off principle when traveling by Trans-Siberian train?

Unfortunately, that is not possible. Train tickets in Russia are not open, so you will need a separate ticket with a particular date for each leg of your trip - for example, you may go all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok, but you will only be able to leave the train for short stops at the railway stations. In case if you would like to explore different cities on the way, you will need separate tickets, for example Moscow – Yekaterinburg, Yekaterinburg – Irkutsk, Irkutsk - Vladivostok. We offer carefully planned private tours that will allow you to visit several cities on your way.

Are there showers aboard Trans-Siberian trains?

Most of the Trans-Siberian trains do not have showers, and there are two WCs per each carriage. Please consider it while planning your trip. We recommend to choose shorter distances (that is, to plan more overnight stops in the cities along the way) to avoid the inconvenience of not showering. Another option is to choose the trip on board a more luxurious train which has all the on-board amenities that one might need.

Are meals included on the board of Trans-Siberian express train?

When traveling with RZD regular trains meals are not included. You can easily buy your meals in the restaurant car.  Another option is to buy local specialties from “babushkas” (grandmothers, or simply Russian old ladies) on the short train stops along the way. This is a very authentic way of getting your meals.

What is the most comfortable way to travel on the Trans-Siberian railroad?

There are luxurious trains on the Trans-Siberian railway that are quite different from regular RZD trains and can be described as 5* hotels on wheels. We offer this type of accommodation on the Imperial Russia train where you can enjoy a full board menu, a shower and a comfortable compartment.
