How to find cheap flights, what is the best day to buy a plane ticket.

This just in! Airfares offered on Thursdays tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity in 2021. Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travelers may already know this, but earlier in the week can be the cheapest time to fly. In 2021, flights departing on a Monday were generally the cheapest of the week, whereas you may pay a premium for weekend flights when demand is usually high. On average, tickets were most expensive for Saturday departures, so if you need to fly out on a weekend, you might look for deals ahead of time.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Trying to figure out how early you should book your flight? It’s possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 0-2 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.com from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change based on departure location, date and destination.

MONTHLY INSIGHTS March 04, 2024

travel market flights

U.S. Travel has temporarily paused our monthly data newsletter, however, the latest travel data is still available via the U.S. Travel Insights Dashboard . This dashboard is updated each month (member login required).

The U.S. Travel Insights Dashboard , developed in collaboration with Tourism Economics, is supported by more than 20 data sources. The dashboard is the most comprehensive and centralized source for high-frequency intelligence on the U.S. travel industry, tracking industry performance, travel volumes and predictive indicators of recovery including air and lodging forecasts, DMO website traffic, convention and group trends, travel spending and losses, traveler sentiment, among others to measure the health of the industry.

Key Highlights January 2024:

  • Travel appetite started the year on a softer note, but overall growth continued. Air passenger growth remained positive, up 6% versus the prior year but lower than the double-digit growth seen through 2023. Foreign visits remained strong, up 24% YoY.
  • Hotel room demand continued a trend of slight contraction falling 1% versus the prior year, while short-term rental demand grew 1%, a lower rate than 2023.
  • A particular bright spot was that group room demand within the top 25 markets displayed solid growth of 9% relative to the prior year.
  • The outlook for the economy remains fairly optimistic due to the strength of the labor market, looser financial conditions and healthy household and nonfinancial corporate balance sheets. This has filtered through to slightly higher consumer sentiment in February.
  • Sentiment is also growing for upcoming leisure travel in 2024. The share of travelers reporting having travel plans within the next six months increased to 93% in January from 92% in December, according to Longwoods International’s monthly survey.
  • Travel price inflation (TPI) fell slightly in January as a result of falling transportation prices. Sticky services inflation should see relief from decelerating wage growth. However, upside risks stem from rising healthcare costs, supply chain disruptions and slowing labor supply. Source: U.S. Travel Association and Tourism Economics

Back to the future? Airline sector poised for change post-COVID-19

It’s difficult to overstate just how much the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated airlines. In 2020, industry revenues totaled $328 billion, around 40 percent of the previous year’s. In nominal terms, that’s the same as in 2000. The sector is expected to be smaller for years to come; we project traffic won’t return to 2019 levels before 2024.

Financial woes aside, the pandemic’s longer-term effects on aviation are emerging. Some of these are obvious: hygiene and safety standards will be more stringent, and digitalization will continue to transform the travel experience. Mobile apps will be used to store travelers’ vaccine certificates and COVID-19 test results.

Other effects, though, are more profound. Unlike the 2008 global financial crisis, which was purely economic and weakened spending power, COVID-19 has changed consumer behavior—and the airline sector—irrevocably.

This article will explore five fundamental shifts in the aviation industry that have arisen from the pandemic. For each of these shifts, we also issue a call to action. By responding to these shifts decisively now, carriers should be able to look beyond the pandemic and adapt to the long-term realities of COVID-19.

1. Leisure trips will fuel the recovery

Business travel will take longer to recover, and even then, we estimate it will only likely recover to around 80 percent of prepandemic levels by 2024. Remote work  and other flexible working arrangements are likely to remain in some form postpandemic and people will take fewer corporate trips.

In previous crises, leisure trips or visits to friends and relatives tended to rebound first, as was the case in the United Kingdom following 9/11 and the global financial crisis (Exhibit 1). Not only did business trips take four years to return to precrisis levels after the attacks on the World Trade Center but they also had not yet recovered to pre-financial-crisis levels when COVID-19 broke out in 2020. Therefore, we expect that as the pandemic subsides, the rise in leisure trips will outpace the recovery of business travel.

Some carriers are highly dependent on business travelers—both those traveling in business class and those who book economy-class seats right before they need to travel. While leisure passengers fill up most of the seats on flights and help cover a portion of fixed costs, their overall financial contributions in net marginal terms are negligible, if not negative. Most of the profits earned on a long-haul flight are generated by a small group of high-yielding passengers, often traveling for business. But this pool of profit-generating passengers has shrunk because of the pandemic.

Corporate travel

A McKinsey Live event on 'Returning to corporate travel: How do we get it right?'

The call: Revisit flight economics

Airlines should reevaluate the economics of their operations, especially long-haul flights. First, a smaller contribution from business traffic could necessitate a different pricing logic. For example, today most carriers price point-to-point nonstop flights at a premium. Travelers who value time over price—mostly business travelers—book these nonstop flights. Leisure travelers, even those traveling in premium classes, are more price sensitive and may choose an indirect routing. This large gap between nonstop pricing and connect pricing may need to narrow.

Second, lower business traffic may require network changes. Airlines added many flights over the past few years between hubs and smaller cities, using small-size widebodies such as the Boeing 787. These flights work because of the high-yielding business demand. With business demand subdued, economics favor larger aircraft flying less frequently. Airlines may find that larger aircraft such as Airbus A350s or Boeing 777s—which have lower unit costs—become the base of the long-haul network.

Third, airlines may also look at reconfiguring the layout of their cabins to address the increased share of leisure traffic. At the simplest level, lower business-class demand may warrant smaller business-class cabins. Taking this further, products may shift to better cater to premium-leisure passengers, such as growth of premium-economy cabins or development of business-class seats more suitable for traveling as couples or groups.

2. Staggering debt levels will lead to ticket price increases and a larger role for government in the sector

Many airlines have had to borrow huge sums of money to stay afloat and cope with high daily cash burn rates. Tapping into state-provided aid, credit lines, and bond issuances, the industry collectively amassed more than $180 billion worth of debt in 2020, 1 “COVID-19 lowers airline credit ratings and raises the cost of debt,” International Air Transport Association, August 21, 2020, iata.org. a figure equivalent to more than half of total annual revenues that year. And debt levels are still rising (Exhibit 2). Repaying these loans is made even harder by worsening credit ratings and higher financing costs.

These costs will need to be recouped. Therefore, we’ll likely see ticket prices rise. By our estimates, this could amount to a rise in ticket prices of about 3 percent, assuming a ten-year repayment window for only the additional debt taken on.

Furthermore, when demand for air travel returns, it will likely outpace supply initially. We see a glut of latent demand of people eager to travel. It will take time for airlines to restore capacity, and bottlenecks such as delays in bringing aircraft back to service and crew retraining could lead to a supply–demand gap, resulting in higher short-term prices.

In many cases, airline rescue efforts come in the form of government bailouts—with strings attached. We’re seeing a reemergence of, or increase in, the level of state ownership and influence. In Europe alone, TAP Air Portugal, Lufthansa Group, and Air Baltic all received state aid combined with an increase or reintroduction of government shareholdings.

The call: Be a constructive collaborator

As the state becomes a more active player—whether as a creditor, a direct shareholder, or as part of the board—airlines will find themselves having to deal more closely with the authorities. Instead of seeing this as a necessary restriction to access much-needed funds, airlines can treat it as an opportunity to shape how the sector evolves with a key stakeholder.

Airlines can work with regulators to set standards across a gamut of issues. These could include committing to reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions in return for more labor flexibility; increasing the cash-on-hand requirements to make airlines more resilient against future shocks; more balanced value sharing between airlines and other sectors such as airports; or changes in the ownership caps to allow greater inflows of foreign capital, reducing the reliance on state capital further down the road.

3. We will see a greater disparity of performance among airlines in the future

Some airlines have responded to the pandemic by restructuring for greater efficiency; others are merely muddling through. Occasionally, this is linked to state-aid programs, which may reduce the incentive for much-needed measures such as cost, organizational, and operational restructuring. Airlines that are not proactively transforming risk failing to set the business up for longer-term structural value creation.

As such, we’re seeing some airlines pull ahead. Before COVID-19, an airline boasted an ROIC well ahead of the overall industry’s rate of 5.8 percent. Not only did its stronger position pre-COVID-19 enable it to navigate the crisis thus far without taking on government loans of the scale relative to other airlines, it also made it possible for it to restructure to emerge with an even more competitive cost base.

Another group of carriers that have an opportunity to transform their business are airlines that have access to a restructuring process, such as Chapter 11 in the United States. These carriers can renegotiate midlife leases, shed excess debt, and emerge leaner. They will be fierce competitors going forward.

The call: Aim higher when it comes to IT and digital investment

Becoming better can necessitate investment. Even though many airlines find themselves in financial straits, we recommend investing more in IT and digitalization, not less. Before the pandemic, airlines spent roughly 5 percent of their revenue on IT. This is relatively low compared with other sectors. By means of comparison, the retail industry spends around 6 percent on average, and financial services 10 percent.

Airlines could consider stepping up IT and automation investment now. For example, airlines can respond to the quicker recovery of domestic and short-haul flights by investing in direct sales and owning the customer relationship. Relationships with IT and distribution providers could be reexplored. Carriers can also invest in the customer experience—such as making check-in and boarding processes more seamless—and support services—from revenue accounting to invoicing—to drive the next level of efficiency. Beyond this, the next horizon is analytics, which involves, among other efforts, using data  in smarter ways to enhance decision making, requiring some investment but yielding significant payoffs .

4. Aircraft markets may be oversupplied for some time to come

In the years before COVID-19, aircraft OEMs ramped up production in the anticipation of continued growth. This has led to a glut in aircraft availability. Furthermore, some carriers have returned relatively new aircraft to lessors, such as Norwegian Air Shuttle when it exited the long-haul market. Prices for used-aircraft leases have plummeted and are likely to remain lower. For instance, the monthly lease rate of a 2016 vintage Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was around $1.2 million in 2019. In 2020, the rate fell to less than $800,000. New aircraft are rumored to be available at even deeper discounts.

The call: Act countercyclically now, if you can

If finances permit, carriers can consider acting countercyclically: locking in orders for new aircraft or confirming operating leases now when demand is low. Aircraft are a significant expense for an airline, making up 10 to 15 percent of a carrier’s cost base. As lease rates and OEM pricing fluctuate with supply and demand levels, inking deals during a crisis could allow carriers to enjoy a cost advantage for years to come.

5. Air freight will see undersupply for some time

Over the past ten years, low cargo rates and the unprofitability of the cargo business have led many airlines to relinquish or scale back their dedicated cargo freighter fleets. However, cargo has been a lifeline for the aviation industry during COVID-19. Before the pandemic, cargo typically made up around 12 percent of the sector’s total revenue; that percentage tripled last year. Based on data from the Airline Analyst, only 21 (down from 77 in 2019) of the airlines around the world that disclosed their operating performance achieved positive operating profits for the third quarter of 2020, traditionally the industry’s most profitable quarter. Among these 21 airlines, cargo revenue accounted for 49 percent of total revenues on average.

During the pandemic, e-commerce sales soared while many passenger flights—which are responsible for delivering around half of total air cargo—were grounded. As a result, cargo yields increased by about 30 percent last year. As commercial flights gradually return, belly supply will increase, although not to pre-COVID-19 levels for at least a few years, as the industry is expected stay smaller than before the pandemic for several years.

The call: Bring back freighters, carefully

In response to the high demand and low supply of air freight right now, carriers could investigate short- to medium-term opportunities to boost their cargo services. Airlines can enhance their flexibility through measures such as increasing the deployment of so-called preighters, or passenger airplanes that are used to transport cargo. Airlines may look at freighter conversions, especially as their passenger fleets reduce in number.

Airlines need to be agile. Rushing headlong into developing and maintaining a large freighter fleet again comes with risk. Airlines need to grow cargo in an agile way that allows for quick adjustments; pursuing such a play should be seen as part of a wider theme of establishing a more flexible production setup. High fixed costs combined with unpredictable demand levels outside an airline’s control increase the need for airlines to be able to scale down supply nimbly.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. There is some relief to be found in various parts of the world now that vaccinations have begun, but the road to recovery for air traffic will take several years. The shape of the post-COVID-19 airline sector is becoming clearer and holds lessons for airlines today. Multiple longer-running trends have been accelerated, such as digitization and the phasing out of less efficient aircraft. Burdened by debt, many carriers have depleted their cash reserves. But the forecast is not without bright spots. Travel will become greener and more efficient, and people are itching to travel again for holidays. Taking steps now will help airlines thrive in this transformed sector.

When is the best time to buy flights for summer and Christmas travel?

Puedes leer esta historia presionando aquí.

As almost everyone knows, summer and winter are the most expensive times of year to travel. But they are also the most active because many people only have the opportunity to travel with family during these dates.

So, what are the best dates and techniques for getting flights at the lowest possible price? Here are some tips based on our experience analyzing flight costs at Mochileando.com over the past seven years.

A very common mistake is that people buy flights almost a year in advance, thinking that they will not get a better deal.

Where to go in 2024: The destinations that could see a drop in airfare prices this year

Learn more: Best travel insurance

The essentials: What you need to know for your first time in Japan

Best dates to book international destinations

Generally, if you're traveling to an international destination, the best dates to buy your flights are seven to two months before your travel date.

This means that if you want to travel on dates between July and August, you're more likely to get competitive prices between December and May before your trip. In the same way, if you want to travel during the holiday season, the months where you will be most likely to get the best prices are between April and October, before your trip.

Best dates to book a domestic destination

Unlike international destinations, prices for domestic destinations are likely to be more competitive between five to up to a month before your trip. With the period from four months to a month before your trip being the most likely to see a better price. This means that if you want to travel on dates in July and August, you're more likely to get competitive prices between March and June before your trip. In the same way, if you want to travel during the Christmas season, the months where you will be most likely to get the best prices are between August and November, before your trip.

Save when traveling: How to use low-cost airlines without having to pay too much

It is important to remember that this is not a hard and fast rule. The travel market can surprise us with unexpected offers at any time. The question is, what can you do to avoid missing out on any deals? There are several alternatives.

  • Set alerts to your flight dates in a search engine. Search engines such as Google Flights or Kayak.com allow you to schedule alerts for your flights if you know the specific dates. This will help you get the best price if an unexpected offer comes up.
  • Subscribe to a website or membership that notifies you daily of the best flight deals. Several pages or memberships notify you when flight prices drop to different destinations. This tool is useful if you have not yet decided on the destination you want to travel to. A very cheap price can help you make the decision.

Always keep in mind that what is a competitive price for summer or winter, is not necessarily a competitive price for traveling in low season. For example, if you're going from New York to Madrid in the summer, a great price can be anything under $599.

However, if you go in the low season a great price could be $429 or less. You need to be realistic when looking for the best prices. But if you follow the tips, there's a good chance you'll get the best deals. Safe travels!

Did You Make Your Connecting Flight? You May Have A.I. to Thank.

Airlines are using artificial intelligence to save fuel, keep customers informed and hold connecting flights for delayed passengers. Here’s what to expect.

A map of the contiguous United States marked with airline routes between hubs like Miami, Boston, New York and Los Angeles, with red, orange, green, blue, red and purple areas that look like storm systems on a radar map. A hand is holding up a cellphone that shows the seating chart of a plane. A message on the screen reads, “JFK-LAX: Holding for Delayed Passengers. On-Time Arrival Projected” and “Gate 10, Seat 5A.”

By Julie Weed

Last month in Chicago, a United Airlines flight to London was ready to depart, but it was still waiting for 13 passengers connecting from Costa Rica. The airline projected they’d miss the flight by seven minutes. Under normal circumstances, they’d all be scrambling to rebook.

But thanks to a new artificial-intelligence-powered tool called ConnectionSaver, the jet was able to wait for them — their checked bags, too — and still arrive in London on time. The system also sent text messages to the late-arriving passengers and the people on the waiting jet to explain what was happening.

A.I. still might not be able to find space for your carry-on, but it could help put an end to the 40-gate dash — sprinting to catch your connecting flight before the door slams shut — as well as other common travel headaches.

It’s not just United. Alaska Airlines , American Airlines and others have been working to develop new A.I. capabilities that could make flying easier for passengers. The carriers are also using the technology to reduce costs and streamline operations, including saving fuel, said Helane Becker, an airline industry analyst for the investment bank TD Cowen . Although many of the airlines are developing their programs independently, a successful innovation by any carrier could possibly become an industry standard.

A.I. is poised to change almost every aspect of the customer flying experience, from baggage tracking to personalized in-flight entertainment, said Jitender Mohan, who works with travel and hospitality clients at the technology consulting company WNS .

Saving fuel and frustration

A.I. has been helping Alaska Airlines dispatchers plan more efficient routes since 2021. “It’s like Google maps, but in the air,” explained Vikram Baskaran, vice president for information technology services at the carrier.

Two hours before a flight, the system reviews weather conditions, any airspace that will be closed, and all commercial and private flight plans registered with the Federal Aviation Administration, to suggest the most efficient route. The A.I. takes in “an amount of information no human brain could process,” said Pasha Saleh, the corporate development director and a pilot for Alaska.

In 2023, about 25 percent of Alaska flights used this system to shave a few minutes off flight times. Those efficiencies added up to about 41,000 minutes of flying time and half a million gallons of fuel saved, Mr. Baskaran said.

On the ground, American Airlines and others are working on an A.I.-powered system American calls Smart Gating — sending arriving aircraft to the nearest available gate with the shortest taxiing time, and if the scheduled arrival gate is in use, quickly determining the best alternate gate. All this could mean fewer frustrating minutes spent waiting on the tarmac.

American introduced Smart Gating at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 2021 and now employs it at six airports, including Chicago O’Hare and Miami International. The airline estimates it saves 17 hours a day in taxi time and 1.4 million gallons of jet fuel a year.

Mr. Mohan said that using A.I. as a virtual parking attendant could save up to 20 percent of taxiing time, with the highest benefits seen at the largest airports.

Faster and better customer service

Rapidly evolving generative A.I. — think ChatGPT — is helping airlines communicate with passengers better. At United, a companywide challenge last year yielded a plan to make texts sent to fliers more specific about what’s causing delays. Passengers can get frustrated when flights are delayed with no explanation, said Jason Birnbaum, United’s chief information officer.

But tracking the details required, composing an appropriate message and sending it to the right people for 5,000 flights a day would be too much for the staff to handle, Mr. Birnbaum said. Generative A.I. can process all that data and create messages tailored to conditions. For example, passengers booked on a January United flight from San Francisco to Tucson received this text message, along with a new departure time and an apology: “Your inbound aircraft is arriving late due to airport runway construction in San Francisco that limited the number of arrivals and departures for all airlines earlier.”

Having a more detailed explanation can calm travelers’ nerves. Jamie Larounis, a travel industry analyst who flies about 150,000 miles a year, recalled receiving text messages last summer explaining that a storm and a related crew-scheduling problem had delayed his flight from Chicago. “Getting a specific reason for the delay made me feel like the airline had things under control,” he said.

Generative A.I. is also good at summarizing text, making it a powerful tool for wading through emails. Last year, Alaska was among the carriers that began using A.I. to handle customer messages more efficiently. The airline’s system “reads” each email and summarizes the issues raised.

“We used to read first in first out, handling the requests as they came in,” said Mr. Baskaran, but now the system helps prioritize emails. For example, an urgent request involving an upcoming flight may take precedence over a complaint about a past one.

The system also helps a human agent decide how to respond, such as offering the customer a voucher, and it may draft an initial written response. “The person makes the decision, but it’s streamlined,” Mr. Baskaran said.

For all the benefits A.I. promises to airlines and passengers, the technology still has some shortcomings. For one, it doesn’t always deliver accurate information. In 2022, an Air Canada chatbot incorrectly promised a traveler that if he booked a full-fare flight to a relative’s funeral, he could receive a bereavement fare after the fact. When he filed a small-claims case, Air Canada tried to argue that the bot was its own separate entity, “responsible for its own actions,” but a tribunal found Air Canada responsible and ordered it to pay about $800 in damages and fees.

Still, as A.I. develops and airlines race to find more uses for it, passengers could see even more benefits. “As a customer and a business person, this is one of the biggest technology disruptions in the last five to eight years,” Mr. Mohan said.

An earlier version of this article, in a quotation from Vikram Baskaran, vice president for information technology services at Alaska Airlines, misstated the number of gallons of fuel an artificial-intelligence-powered planning system saved the airline in 2023. It was half a million, not half a billion.

Air New Zealand CEO explains why flights are so expensive and if they will get cheaper

Air New Zealand chief executive Greg Foran has said the airline is in “a challenging environment” regarding costs and did not expect airfares to drop on their own.

Speaking at the annual tourism event Trenz in Wellington last week, , Foran was asked whether airfare would drop any time soon.

He responded by explaining the increased cost of fuel, saying the cost of a barrel was about $85 last year but is now closer to $105 and had only dropped to $95 this week.

Every dollar per barrel represented $12 million in costs to the airline, Foran claimed.

“If we assume it’s going to be $80 and it’s $85, it’s $5 more, that’s basically costing us $60 million straight off the bottom line,” he said, describing the difference as “meaningful” for a business that makes between $300m and $400m annually.

“I think it’s going to be a challenge to see prices come down on a normalised basis,” he added.

Auckland Airport ’s chief customer officer, Scott Tasker, said the industry was currently “intensely competitive”, and Air New Zealand wasn’t alone in facing increased costs.

“The pressures that we’re under are not any different from every other carrier when it comes to fuel, when it comes to engineering costs, when it comes to inflation,” he said, describing these factors as “universal”.

Tasker said the airport and Air New Zealand would always be focused on the value created.

“It’s not just about price for us, it’s about making sure that customers see value in our proposition,” he said.

What are international airfares like compared with 2019?

International airfares increased by 7.2 per cent in April, compared with March, according to Stats NZ. This followed a drop during summer when competing airlines returned to NZ and drove prices down.

International air transport prices have dropped 20.5 per cent in the past 12 months, while domestic prices are down 6.9 per cent.

However, these prices are still 47.7 per cent more expensive than in April 2019, a year now considered the “golden era” for cheap travel before the pandemic.

Kiwis waiting for prices to return to pre-pandemic numbers will be waiting a while, according to previous comments from Air New Zealand’s CEO .

“Our own costs continue to rise and the reality is that airfares are unlikely to return to pre-pandemic levels,” Foran said back in August 2023.

Domestic market considered the least competitive market in NZ

Air New Zealand warned travel agents long-term domestic airfares would increase from April 23 but did not disclose how much.

Domestic air transport prices fell 5.1 per cent from March to April and were 6.9 per cent less than at the same time last year, yet there is concern the domestic airfare market is not competitive enough.

A Horizon Research study found 75 per cent of Kiwi respondents considered the domestic aviation market was the least competitive in New Zealand . Air New Zealand currently operates more than 80 per cent of domestic flights.

Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran says fuel costs have played a significant part in airline expenses.

SINGAPORE: Budget airline Scoot has cancelled several flights in May due to a "variety of operational reasons".

In response to CNA's queries, the low-cost unit of Singapore Airlines said on Thursday (May 9) it had scrapped some flights, with one of the reasons being an industry-wide shortage of aircraft parts.

“Several flights scheduled in May 2024 are cancelled due to a variety of operational reasons, including aircraft unavailability, because of a shortage of spare parts due to supply chain issues,” said Scoot.

The carrier did not provide CNA with the number of affected flights but apologised for the travel disruption.

"Scoot sincerely apologises to all affected customers for the inconvenience caused by this disruption,” it said.

“We proactively contacted all affected customers and most have been reaccommodated on alternative flights, including on Singapore Airlines and Scoot.”

For the passengers who were not reaccommodated, Scoot said it had offered them a full refund of the unused portion of their tickets.

SUPPLY CHAIN, MANPOWER WOES AMID SOARING DEMAND

Global demand for air travel has nearly recovered to pre-COVID pandemic levels  - Changi Airport saw more passenger movements in February than the same period in 2019.

Air travel worldwide is expected to finally exceed pre-COVID levels this year, with a  full recovery anticipated for the Asia Pacific , according to observers.

However, the aviation industry is struggling with severe shortages of parts, labour and new aircraft.

The  rebound of air travel  has prompted airlines to order more planes, and aircraft manufacturing giants such as Airbus and Boeing are struggling to meet the demand.

Scoot’s CEO Leslie Thng on Singaporeans’ fave destinations, budget airline misconceptions and more

Speaking at the Singapore Airshow in February, Airbus Asia-Pacific’s president Anand Stanley told CNA about the backlog orders and that Asia-Pacific region is the fastest growing market, and also the largest market, in aviation.

“We are talking about 19,000 to 20,000 aircraft over the next 20 years, so it is (an) unstoppable demand to be honest,” he said.

The demand for aircraft has been going up post-pandemic, said Mr Stanley.

“We are looking at 19,000 new aircraft that are required, which shows that air travel is back,” he said.

“Last year, we had a record year in terms of our backlog and orders. We have 8,300 aircraft in the backlog right now.”

Mr Stanley also acknowledged that while Airbus was "in a ramp-up to meet demand", supply chain had yet to catch up, so this was an area the company would have to work closely with suppliers to "resolve and more importanly, meet the needs of airline customers and consumers".

The loss of skilled manpower during the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced supply sources by the war in Ukraine have exacerbated the crunch.

"The aerospace-grade titanium shortage started with the Ukraine war," said Mr Roberto Tonna, chief executive of aerospace supply chain firm ALA, at the Singapore Airshow.

The lack of materials such as inconel - an alloy used by aircraft sector companies to make engines and exhaust systems - and steel, as well as skilled labour are all ongoing issues, he added.

In addition to the Ukraine conflict, the Israel-Hamas war and increasing geopolitical tensions worldwide has also contributed to the industry-wide shortage of parts.

Bibus Metals, which supplies high-performance metals, said such materials, which are critical in the manufacturing of planes, are increasingly harder and more expensive to source due to increased demand from countries looking to beef up their defence capabilities.

Pascal Fabre, a specialist at consultancy firm AlixPartners, added the aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul sector is “under-capacity". Boeing and Airbus are also fully booked until almost the end of the decade, and are accumulating delays.

MANUFACTURING SNAG

The airline industry’s issues have also been compounded by an engine manufacturing flaw by US aerospace giant RTX , which led to the grounding of hundreds of Airbus A320neo jets last year.

The snag could ground an average of 350 jets a year through 2026, with as many as 650 jets sitting idle in the first half of 2024.

The problem is likely to worsen a tug-of-war over engines between aeroplane factories and repair shops as repairs take longer to fix.

In September last year, Scoot said the inspections would affect four of the engines that power its A320neo fleet, adding the affected engines had been removed from commercial service.

Scoot also said last November that it was looking to extend the lease of some of its A320ceo aircraft due to problems with their Pratt & Whitney engines.

"We have some flex in terms of the A320ceos that we are returning next year in 2024, so we are exploring whether we should maybe extend some of the leases to mitigate the impact," CEO Leslie Thng added.
