How to Book Cheap Flights?

  • Fly during the working week Opting to take your flight during the working week can save you money. Flights departing over this period – especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays – are cheaper, mainly because these days are less popular to travel on.
  • Have a look at airline websites Many airline websites have made it simpler to identify the inexpensive days to fly by displaying a "calendar view" booking system. This system allows you to scan prices ranging across the week that you are searching.
  • Consider flights with less-popular departure times You may also get a bargain flight if you're willing to fly at an early hour. It may well be less expensive to fly at 6 am than at later times due to that time spot being less popular. The only problem you could face is getting to the airport at this time; make sure that public transport is running if you can't take a taxi or get a lift to the airport.
  • Find a better price on the Trip.com app This may sound like I'm stating the obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who settle for a price without first shopping around and doing some research. We suggest you have a look for bargains on the Trip.com app. The Trip.com Save & Fly browser extension is a big help when learning how to get cheap flight tickets. While you're looking for airline tickets online, the extension notifies you of whether the exact same flight is available on Trip.com at a better price. It's completely free to install and use, and it takes some of the pressure off booking your tickets.
  • Book early instead of waiting until the last minute Don't get fooled into thinking that last-minute deals are necessarily the best option for cheap flight tickets because they seldom are. The smart move is to book early, even as far as a year in advance if that is possible for the flight you require. Flight tickets have a tendency to be cheaper when they are first released – which is normally about a year before the flight – so have a look online as soon as the flights you want are available. This is particularly true if you are planning to travel during school holidays or to a destination where a famous event is taking place. These prices will increase rapidly, so book before the masses do. The price of a flight may drop again before re-climbing in the last few days before the flight takes off but they also may not. It's not worth the risk of waiting for a drop in prices only to be faced with higher prices for leaving it until the last minute. You also run the risk that the tickets will become sold out before you book yours, especially if it's a popular flight. If you're willing to be flexible, which is really the name of the game for cheap flight tickets, then have a look at a flight search engine as it may post flight tickets which get lower in price as the flight time approaches.
  • Use a credit card in a wiser way There are a lot of advantages to paying for a flight with a credit card. One advantage is that you are protected when you make bigger purchases. For example, if you spend more than $100 on a flight, you will be covered for a refund if the airline or travel company goes out of business. This will not necessarily be the case if you pay with a debit card so check first. Credit cards are also more useful for spending in a foreign country and give you better exchange rates than you would get with your debit card. Certain credit cards will offer you air miles for each sum of money spent, thus saving you a bit more on your flight tickets. They may also give you a certain amount of cashback on the purchase of your flight ticket.
  • Choose flights with a connection Booking a flight with a connection is nearly always a cheaper option, especially on longer-haul flights. The best thing to do is to uncheck the "non-stop only" option on your flight booking website's search engine, and have a look to see if the flights shown are any cheaper. However, there is a degree of risk involved in this method of getting cheap air tickets. If one of your earlier flights is delayed, this could mean that you miss a later connecting flight.
  • Book package holidays which may offer cheap flight tickets If you book a package holiday, you are likely to get discounts on flights as well as accommodation. This is because travel companies book tickets in such large volumes that they get huge discounts. It is sometimes possible to get a whole holiday for less than the price of a regular flight.
  • Be aware of hidden costs of cheap flights Be aware that cheap flight tickets with budget airlines can be deceptive. Very often there can be hidden costs, so check for air taxes, baggage fees, or seat selection costs before you buy. Airlines can also add travel insurance and other features on automatically without checking to see if you want them first. Travel light if it's possible. Carry-on baggage is usually free, but be sure to check the regulations on weight limitations first.

What is a round-trip flight?

What is a one-way flight, when booking cash tickets, when redeeming points and miles, consider booking open-jaw flights.

Are round-trip flights cheaper? The short answer is that it depends . Where you’re traveling to and if you’re paying with cash or miles are the biggest factors in the equation.

For instance, if you’re traveling between the U.S. and Europe and paying in cash, it's cheaper to book a round-trip flight. But if you’re paying for that same flight with miles, the price of two one-way tickets will most often be the same as a round-trip flight (though the taxes paid may vary).

There are other considerations besides just price when comparing round-trip versus one-way flights. Travelers might be surprised to find that booking a round-trip award flight could lead to issues if you have a change in plans mid-trip.

Here's a look at options to weigh when booking round-trip versus one-way flights and answers to some frequently asked questions.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

When you book a round-trip flight, it means you travel from Destination A to Destination B and you return back to Destination A from Destination B. Both flights are booked as one ticket.

So when you’re purchasing the ticket, you select your origin, destination, departure and return date. You make one payment, whether it's with cash or miles.

» Learn more: How to book a flight

A one-way flight, in contrast, is a ticket booked with no return. So you’re only booking a flight from Destination A to Destination B. You can purchase a second, separate ticket from Destination B back to Destination A (should you so choose). One-way flights can be booked with cash or miles.

These types of flights are a good option for those who don’t know their return date, are only traveling in one direction or booking an open-jaw itinerary .

» Learn more: The best days to book a flight and when to fly

When booking flights paid in cash, our recommendation is pretty simple: Book the option that's cheapest for your trip. If a round-trip flight is cheaper than two one-way flights, there's no reason to book two one-way flights.

If two one-way flights are the same price as a round-trip, it might make sense to book the one-way flight (as long as you don’t mind keeping track of the two separate reservations). Even though many airlines have eliminated change fees , it's much easier to change — or even cancel — a flight when there’s only one flight on the reservation to make a change to.

If you’re flying domestically in the U.S., the cost of two one-way flights will usually be the same as a round trip; however, when flying internationally, it can be much more expensive to book two one-way tickets.

Sample flight within the U.S.

In this example flight search on American Airlines , booking two one-way tickets from Newark to Miami will cost $154 for the outgoing flight and $124 for the return, for a total of $278.

Return flight

If you were to book these two flights as a round-trip ticket, the price would be exactly the same at $278.

Sample international flight

It's a different ball game with international flights.

Take a look at this flight search from Washington-Dulles to Frankfurt, Germany, on United Airlines . If you were to book the flights as two one-way tickets, it would cost you $3,110.

trip 2 fly

However, if you book these same flights as part of a round-trip ticket, you’d have to pay $1,783, representing a significant savings over booking two one-way flights.

» Learn more: Should I be loyal to a single airline?

If you're planning on using points and miles to book award flights, you have a different set of factors to consider. In the case of award travel, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award.

Two one-way awards offer more flexibility

Most U.S. airlines have dropped change fees on both award and paid flights. So, if the price is the same, consider booking two one-way awards instead of a round-trip award to gain extra flexibility. Keep in mind that if you book a round trip, depending on the airline, you may have difficulty getting your miles redeposited if you need to change your award ticket after taking the first leg of the flight.

For example, if you cancel a United award flight midtrip, you'll retain the miles as a future flight credit. While the miles won't be refunded to your account, you'll have the chance to use them in the future.

Watch for higher taxes and fees when booking two one-way awards

When considering whether to book round-trip versus one-way awards, it's important to price out both options — particularly when flying overseas. Some airlines charge higher taxes and fees for awards that originate in certain regions of the world.

Delta SkyMiles is infamous for charging higher fees for award flights that originate in Europe. Also, particularly for international flights, Delta will often price round-trip award flights at less than the cost of two one-way awards.

For example, take a round-trip award from New York to Paris. Delta charges 50,000 SkyMiles plus $85 in taxes and fees for a round-trip main cabin award.

trip 2 fly

However, if you book the same flights as two one-way awards, you'll pay a total of 74,000 SkyMiles plus roughly $220 in taxes and fees. The outbound award costs 37,000 miles plus $6 in taxes and fees. Then, you'll need to pay another 37,000 SkyMiles plus around $220 to fly home.

In a situation like this, it makes sense to book a round-trip award. You'll save on miles and out-of-pocket costs.

Consider change fees on award flights

Most U.S. airlines have eliminated change fees on both paid flights and award tickets. However, that's not the case with all mileage programs. If you're booking through a mileage program that charges change fees, you may want to book a round-trip award to reduce the fees you could pay if you need to cancel the trip.

» Learn more: Booking flights with points or miles expands refund option

Say you're considering flying to Europe to take a cruise from Budapest to Munich. One might assume that your only options are to:

Book a round-trip flight into one of the cities plus book a one-way intra-Europe flight between them.

Book two one-way flights — one-way into Budapest and one-way back from Munich.

However, there's a third option: booking an "open-jaw" flight . Many airlines will let you book a flight into Budapest and a flight back from Munich on the same ticket. Rather than pricing these flights as two one-way flights, the airline generally prices the flights similar to a round-trip.

» Learn more: The guide to open-jaw flights with Chase points

If you're using airline miles to book these flights, check to see if it's cheaper to book two one-way awards or an open-jaw award. As outlined in the Delta example above, award flights originating in Europe can have much higher taxes and fees. So it might make sense to book the two award segments together as a multicity award.

In the past, airlines charged more for booking two one-way flights rather than a round-trip on the same route. However, this isn't the case anymore on most domestic flights and even some international flights — mostly thanks to competition from low-cost carriers.

In short, airlines charge more for one-way flights on the routes when they can get away with doing so. If only one airline is operating a particular route, it might increase the price of one-way flights to generate more revenue from business travelers and others that are willing to pay more for the nonstop flight.

However, when there's competition from other airlines, the cost of one-way flights often drops to compete with the other airlines serving that route.

Booking a round-trip flight can be cheaper than booking one-way tickets on the same flights. Before booking two one-way flights, check the round-trip price to see if it's cheaper. Even if you're flying out of a different city than you're flying into, booking a so-called "open-jaw" flight could be much cheaper than booking two one-way flights.

Most U.S. airline loyalty programs will charge the same number of miles whether you book round-trip or two one-way flights. Because of this, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award to get flexibility in case you need to change or cancel plans.

However, this isn't always the case. Some loyalty programs — such as Delta — charge fewer miles for booking a round-trip award instead of two one-way flights. We recommend pricing out award flights both ways just to be sure.

will charge the same number of miles whether you book round-trip or two one-way flights. Because of this, it can make sense to book two one-way flights instead of a round-trip award to get flexibility in case you need to change or cancel plans.

Best Spots For Fly Fishing In North Carolina (+ What Flies To Bring)

A s a Canadian fly fisherman myself, I find it quite hard to admit, but there are arguably better fishing spots south of the border.

With places like Jackson’s County Fly Fishing Trail , the brown trout blessed Watauga River and plenty of other rivers, creeks, and streams, North Carolina is quickly becoming a more prevalent fixture on angler’s bucket lists.

The fly fishing in North Carolina may not be quite as renowned as the fishing hot spots of Colorado or the vast national parks in Montana, but there are a growing number of healthy fisheries being protected throughout the state which make for excellent places to cast a line.

In this guide, I’m going to share with you some of the best fly fishing spots in North Carolina including a few more off-track destinations that even local anglers may not have heard of.

The Best Fly Fishing Spots in North Carolina

1. jackson’s county fly fishing trail.

Let’s start with a couple that we introduced in the beginning of this post. As far as fishing in NC goes, the aptly named Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail is a fly anglers’ dream.

The trail brings you past 15 trout streams with over 36 points of public access where you can spot cast at brookies, browns, and rainbow.

Bring along your best waders for fly fishing and your best boots for hiking if you plan to do this trail. There are some wider parts of the river where you’ll utilize the former and some muddy parts of trail where you’ll need the latter!

2. Neuse River

Located just over 11-miles from downtown Raleigh , the Neuse River makes for a great day trip from Raleigh and is an excellent spot for fishing white bass shad in the spring, largemouth bass in the summer or white bass, striped bass, and tailwater trout in the winter.

Most people will tell you that if you want to get some good catches when fly fishing, you’ll need to head to the mountains.

While I agree, the best places to go fly fishing is definitely in the NC mountains, those looking for the best fly fishing spots near Raleigh will find the Neuse River to be your best local go-to.

The Neuse River, especially in Milburnie Park below where the dam used to be, is a great place to find wild trout , as well as smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie and small fish like this.

The guys over at Raleigh Flies put together some well-priced guided fishing packages and they know these waters really well. They can take you out to the Neuse or Tar, Haw, and Cape Fear Rivers. They also do float trips to some of the other spots on this list like Jackson and the Watauga.

You can also often find Fly Fishing Meet Ups in the Raleigh-Durham area. Check out Meetup.com for the latest events .

3. Watauga River

If you want to fish on a river where the trout are healthy and plentiful , then the Watauga River is hard to beat anywhere else in the country, let alone in North Carolina!

Before casting a line here, have a look at the water. The trout can be a bit more finicky here, so look to see if there’s a hatch or if terrestrials are landing on the water.

If there’s activity on the top, use a dry fly and fish topwater. If you scoop the net and see larva, try nymphing or fishing smaller streamers.

Change flies often here and once you find what the fish are feeding on, you’ll likely catch fish after fish.

You can check out the guys at Foscoe Fishing Company in the North Carolina mountains if you want a guide to maximizing your chances of getting the flies and casts just right.

4. The Toe River

The Toe River in Avery County is one of the lesser-known fly fishing destinations in North Carolina, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still one of the best.

This is one of the best trout streams in the state and the fish aren’t spooked as easily, thanks to fewer artificial flies landing on the surface of the river here!

There are rainbow here, but they tend to be a bit smaller, so wild browns are what most anglers are going after. These can be over 20 inches if you get lucky.

The Toe is a year-round fishing destination , but for fly anglers, visit the stocked fisheries on the river in the spring when the fish are starved from winter wait and hatches are prevalent.

5. Blue Ridge & Smoky Mountains

Western North Carolina’s famed Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountain ranges tower around the city of Asheville and are teeming with healthy populations of Rainbow, Brook, and Brown trout, as well as small and largemouth bass, Sunfish and Crappie.

This is one of the best year-round destinations for fly fishing in North Carolina with the Nantahala River being a particularly popular spot for trout fishing.

White Oak Creek is a hatchery supported area of the Nantahala River and is along the upper section of the water and goes all the way down to the Duke Energy Power Plant where there are delayed harvest trout waters.

The Lower Nantahala is also a great area for trout fishing but the trout on both portions can be finicky here as well, so change flies often and bring along some midges, crayfish, and shrimp and nymph patterns.

6. Linville River

Last but definitely not least on this list of the best fly fishing in North Carolina is the Linville River which has plenty of stocked trout including browns, rainbows, and brooks. They definitely aren’t as picky of eaters as those found around the Nantahala!

These fish will devour pretty much anything you cast at them as long as it’s well presented.

If you want to land the massive browns that the river is known for, you’ll want to come in the fall , though the Linville can be fished pretty much year-round.

This is another spot where you’ll pretty much need waders as there are some tough spots and the trout can hold in deeper pools that aren’t reachable from shore.

For the easiest access to the Linville, you’ll want to park at the Linville Gorge and hike in from there.

When Is Fishing Season in North Carolina?

The official fishing season in North Carolina is all year-round with no closed seasons. However, you will find that certain fish thrive in certain seasons.

If you’re not picky about what you catch, you can cast your line anytime. You can have just as much luck in November as you might in July, but generally, the larger and more hungry fish are feeding in the Spring and Fall.

Trout is more catchable in March, April, May, October, November.

You should also take note of these regulations , as you can only catch a certain quantity and weight of some species of fish.

Best Flies To Bring Fly Fishing

In some fishing spots in NC, the fish will take pretty much anything. But some flies you’ll definitely want to have in your box include:

  • Worm Pattern (Squirmy Worm)
  • Micro Spawn
  • Pheasant Tail Nymph (PNT)
  • Soft Hackle
  • Zebra Midge

FAQs About Fly Fishing in NC

Do i need a special license to fly fish in nc.

Most places in North Carolina require you to have a fishing license, but the type of license you get depends on what you are trying to catch and where you are fishing. You can view details about fishing licenses and registration here .

What gear do I need to fly fish in North Carolina?

The gear you bring largely depends on what you’re trying to catch. When it comes to choosing rods, this is solely dependant on what you’re fishing for. As well as this, you should take sunglasses, flies (of course), forceps, nippers, fly floatant, split shot, and wear layered, quick-drying clothing.

Where is the best place to fish for trout in North Carolina?

For trout fishing, I recommend you visit Western North Carolina, particularly around the Great Smoky Mountains region. Other places that are good for trout fishing in NC are Asheville, Cherokee, and the Pisgah National Forest.

In Conclusion

North Carolina fly fishing is exciting and the spots are scenic and at times, challenging, but overall this is still one of the best up-and-coming destinations for anglers in the US.

There aren’t many places where there’s a trail with 15 river systems and dozens of fishing holes where you could literally spend a month or two and not see them all.

From Jackson to Asheville, give yourself time in NC if you’re an angler. Bring your camera and prepare to make some great fishing memories. You won’t be disappointed!

Angler holds catch with rod half-submerged in river.

What Is a Fly Reel?

A fly reel holds the fly line and backing and is essential equipment for anyone who wishes to  begin fly fishing . Its braking system applies drag that puts pressure on the line and helps you control and bring in your fish.

What Do Fly Reel Numbers Mean?

Fly rods have a designated weight size designed to hold a specific range of fly line weights (WT). Different manufacturers rate reel size in different ways, but all reel sizes boil down to the line weight they’re designed to hold. Orvis reels are sized using Roman numerals I, II, III, IV, and V, and coordinate with the following line weights:

  • For Orvis  fly reel size I , choose  1–3 WT fly line
  • For Orvis  fly reel size II , choose  3–5 WT fly line
  • For Orvis  fly reel size III , choose  5–7 WT fly line
  • For Orvis  fly reel size IV , choose  7–9 WT fly line
  • For Orvis  fly reel size V , choose  9–11 WT fly line

How Do You Know What Fly Reel to Buy?

When shopping for a fly reel, first decide what type of fishing (target species, water type, average conditions) you plan to fish most. From there you can determine a preferred line weight, and then the reel size which will fit that line weight.

Target Species:

  • Trout & Freshwater Bass:  The most important aspect of choosing a trout and  bass fly reel  is to match the weight of the line to your rod and reel. The most versatile freshwater rod is a 5 WT, designed to cast 5 WT fly line, and paired with a size II or III fly reel (both designed to hold 5 WT line). Go with a size larger if you’re fishing  streamers  and have a streamer-specific line or you’ll be adding longer sink tips. This makes gathering up line easier as you reel in.
  • Saltwater Species:  You’ll need a strong drag and a large reel to haul in saltwater species, which often pull much harder than freshwater fish. Again, match the line weight to the reel size and the rod WT, but consider over-sizing it a bit if your desired line weight is on the edges of sizing. This allows for more backing, which you may need when a powerful fish takes off on a long run. Larger handles are nice on saltwater reels. You’ll be spending more time reeling in than when freshwater fly fishing.

With fly reels, you get what you pay for. Most cheap reels are just cheap.   For trout and bass fishing, you can get away with a less expensive reel, but rest assured it won’t last as long as a well-built, costlier model. In saltwater fishing, a lesser reel might not make it through a full season—corrosion from saltwater and sand will kill it quickly.

Fresh or Saltwater

When buying a saltwater reel, look for one with a sealed drag system (most freshwater reels don’t have them). This helps keep saltwater from getting into the guts of the reel and turning the parts into rusted, unusable pieces. Wash your saltwater reels after every outing to help keep parts moving.

What Is a Click Pawl Fly Reel?

With this style reel, you rely on the clicker system to slow down the spool’s speed (and the fish). In addition, you can place your free hand on the rim of the reel to use it as drag control. This is a classic style of reel many anglers still love; find it in our Battenkill line.

What Is a Large Arbor Fly Reel?

Large arbor reels,  including the Clearwater fly reel or the bestselling Orvis Hydros fly reels,   are larger-diameter reels with oversized spools. These spools hold the line in a position that’s away from the center and the spindle.  Large arbor reels arrived on the scene a little more than a decade ago, and they quickly became the hottest thing in fly fishing since bead-head nymphs. For everyone from trout fishermen to saltwater anglers, their design offers several key benefits, including less reeling to retrieve your line, more backing and thicker lines, fewer tangles on the ground, and a more consistent drag.

What Should I Look For in a Fly Reel?

Look for performance and value in a fly reel. Your target species, the type of water you’re fishing, and your budget will inform the type of reel you choose. Reels for freshwater trout and bass don’t need a strong drag and larger size as do reels for saltwater fish. Look for larger handles on saltwater reels to facilitate your efforts; we recommend a saltwater reel with a sealed drag system to protect the reel’s insides from corrosive saltwater.

How Do You Match a Fly Reel to a Rod?

Match the fly reel to the rod weight noted on the handle. For example, if you have a 5-weight rod, you’ll want to match it with a 4- or 5-weight reel or a 5- or 6-weight reel. Reel sizes are marked with a slash, so a 4/5 reel means a reel suited to a 4- or 5-weight fly rod. A 5/6 fly reel is suitable for a 5- or 6-weight rod.

How Do I Know What Size Fly Reel To Get?

Your fly rod weight, noted on the handle, determines the size of the fly reel to get. The numbers roughly correspond, so a 9-weight rod requires an 8- to 10-weight reel, depending on your preferences. Think about oversizing your reel just a bit for saltwater fishing, which allows more room for backing.

What Does 7/8 Mean on a Fly Reel?

The number notated as a fraction on a fly reel isn’t actually a fraction: It’s the range of line weights that reel accommodates. A 7/8 on a fly reel means that reel works with 7- or 8-weight line for a 7- or 8-weight rod.

Do You Need Drag on a Fly Reel?

Yes, you need drag on a fly reel, although some experts hold to the opinion that you won’t need it if you’re fishing with a 4-weight rod or less. Drag comes into play when you need to let a bigger fish run, so set your drag to accommodate how much resistance you anticipate from your target. Erring on the side of slightly looser drag is best, since it decreases the risk of the fish breaking off in the first 5 or 10 seconds. But setting drag depends on several variables such as species, wind and water conditions, hook size, tippet strength, and others, and finding the right drag setting often requires some trial and error.

First off, consider starting with Tortuguero. A few days of no road traffic, canal tours, and lots of wildlife is a good way to begin. You could then continue further down the Caribbean coast or try another inland area, such as Sarapiqui.

Another thought is to return to either the Arenal area or Monteverde, staying at a different locations. If you choose Arenal, consider staying on the lake or up in El Castillo.

Note that Tortuguero mentioned in Post 1 needs SJO. Turtle nesting season in T. is July-Oct. If your spring break is in March, there will be some hiking and canal boat tours to observe wildlife.

From Liberia, consider Bijagua - rural tourism, wildlife. The area that generally gets lots of rain yr round. Could stay at a hotel/working farm, that some families might enjoy. The site of one of the hotels near Bijagua has a list of activities you can do in the area - https://casitastenorio.com/activities/ .

There are some sample itineraries here - https://mytanfeet.com/costa-rica-travel-tips/costa-rica-itinerary-ideas/ , incl. the ones starting from both of the CR international airports, family-friendly itineraries, trips of various durations.

March is one of the hottest months of the yr if you plan to visit some beach areas on the Pacific coast. Tropical dry forest in March is not going to be green jungle look some visitors expect to find in CR.

If you decide to fly to SJO and visit Tortuguero, it combines well with S. Caribbean. We had found the info at https://www.puertoviejosatellite.com/index.php helpful when planning our trips to that coast of CR. I do not know what your interests are. We enjoyed the Caribbean coast, as we prefer less developed places and the wildlife opportunities it gave us. E.g., sloths, monkeys, birds, snakes, insects, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had briefly looked at the Caribbean side years ago but it seemed rainy at the time of year we were going. Is it dry on that coast in late March? We do like a place with a pool and maybe a little restaurant. Anything like that come to mind in the area?

@3, Possible monthly rainfall on the Caribbean coast- https://www.puertoviejosatellite.com/weather.php . It can rain in the rainforest at any time, but we were also there in July, which could be the rainiest month there, and still liked it. You do not know how the weather will be in March 2025. The rain is warm.

@3, Have just double-checked the min. age at this popular beach hotel near Puerto Viejo - https://www.bananaazul.com/ . But they are 16+. Their restaurant accepts families though. They also offer various tours, bike rentals, etc. They recommend their neighbour, https://www.puertoviejoclub.com/us/ , for families.

I have visited the Caribbean coast two times in March and we didn't have much rain. I liked 3 Bamboo but they don't have a restaurant.

Honestly, for what you're looking for, I wouldn't fly into LIR. If you decide on Tortuguero I'd recommend Hotel Manatus. We also had a great time at Ylang Ylang Resort in Montezuma, if you'd like to try the Nicoya Peninsula.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

I took these photos near Ranfurly in Central Otago, New Zealand. Anyone can use them please spread far and wide. :-) https://t.co/NUWpLiqY2S — Dr Andrew Dickson reform/ACC (@AndrewDickson13) May 10, 2024

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

Top 5 airlines flying to miami.

I would fly again the whole experience was great. The only feed back I can give that they don't do that American Airlines does is the crew there is more humorous with boarding and thank their passengers. It makes it more fun to fly with them. I would however fly Delta again.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

Flight was delayed an no one make an announcement about it., they only have Coca Cola and nothing else., the food that was served was cold… very bad experience and service

They did a fine job. Can't wait to use Delta in the future.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

The experience was good and the flight departed on time and landed early

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

Bathroom broke, had to rush to board because of late exit of previous flight

Boarding super slow with people allowed to linger in aisles

No lounge access with “United First” ticket. False alarm about late flight, jeopardizing connection. Wrong meal. Loose power socket would not hold plug, could not charge device. In-flight access to text messaging did not work. Toilet seat on plane would not stay up.

We ended up with seats in the very back. So they did not recline. Have no idea why, we reserved and checked in very early. The isles were very narrow and the seats had very little leg room. But they did give us water, and a snack.

Check in etc was very good. As for on the plane, it was like flying in a freezer. It was so cold, i have flown for years and never been so cold on a plane. Staff on board said its always cold when flying which is a load of rubbish. They wouldnt put any heating on and now i have the flu because of this .

I’ve had a couple flights this week on United that were delayed by an hour or more

Surprisingly easy! I was hesitant to try this, but the cost swayed me. I actually felt like I had less stress than all the taxiing and possible delays that occur with short regional flights where you spend less time in the air than getting to and from the plane..

This flight was delayed multiple times and eventually canceled around 2-3ish. Original take off time was around 10:30am. By 3, there were no other options out of Houston, so stuck in Houston for from 3pm - 11am the next day.

Should have video screens Plane audio was poor and without wired connection hard to understand crew. Should serve more than just cups of water and pretzels on six hour flight. Did not see crew rest of flight. Fix charging sockets to retain charging blocks.

I paid $380 for my one-way ticket from California to Minnesota. The fair did not include online check-in. I received instructions from their app to check in at a kiosk. At the kiosk, the boarding pass would not print until an actual person came to verify that I had a personal item and not a carry-on item, On the plane, the person next to me was drunk and allowed to continue to order alcohol. United is garbage I’d rather fly spirit.

The plane was dirty and the in seat air wasn't blowing as planes usually do.

Generally good but there wasn’t any staff available when my luggage didn’t appear at baggage claim in Fresno. It took about half an hour to locate a staff member to open up the locked room where it was being kept.

Use planes with TVs on flights over 4 hours. The free entertainment was a cheap in between solution for a very long flight that you don't even bother providing meals or decent snacks.

It was a good flight. Of course it was full, but it went well.

We are gluten free, there were not any available complimentary gluten free options.

Lots of weather delays that were poorly communicated and managed. I get there are weather delays but they didn’t make it clear what was happening or comfortable on the plane

Me and my husband experienced very bad in American Airlines. We missed our flight going to Doha. The American Airlines was delayed we arrived already 10:27pm. Supposed to be 9:40 pm. So what they did they rebooked our flight and they gave us a hotel. When we arrived at the hotel the front desk said it was fully booked already. Oh my gosh! I said why did you accept the booking if it's fully booked. The guy said that's American Airlines they just book even it's already full. That's 2am already, we have nothing to do so, we decided to go another hotel. We pay the room, food and taxi. Pls give an action on this matter. Refund our expenses and give us more compensation. Not only our room, food, taxi but also our efforts, tiredness looking for a room that can accommodate us.

No meal on a cross country flight? SFO-MiA is pretty much the definition of a coast to coast flight. No meal provided. Sky high wi-fi rates too. Stop nickel and diming your customers.

Absolutely filthy flight and not equipped for a trans US

The male steward shoved me hard when i sleeping on the isle, woke me up the only way incan descripe it was Violently. I wanted to cause a scene but was able to putnmy anger innch check, i want complain to AA

Good over all but my flight from. Miami to Barbados the airplane was very dirty like I have never seen before. It looked like that plane hasn’t been cleaned in a long time and I fly about one time a month.

Everything was very good EXCEPT the food, on a five and a half hour trip. They only gave to us was snacks in first class. They didn't give us pillows or blankets.

Horrible. Delays, no customer support and fake promises and everything. i am suffering to help as due to connecting flight getting missed no support on ground and customer support window is closed and we are sitting o ground without anything

Terrible… missed our flight due to ridiculously long time to go thru baggage check-in!

Everything was really good but the seats are not very comfortable.

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

Pretty good. Would’ve been excellent if we would have left on time and the crew wasn’t late.

Spirit airline tries to screw you at every opportunity. Spirit wanted 65$ for an extra pound in the suitcase Made me open the suitcase at the counter to remove 1 pound. Staff very cold and rude Will never fly spirit again and will recommend same to family and friends

The weight limit per bag was really low - 40 lbs - so we had to pay extra. Then, they said their carry on size was 14x18x8, and we measured our bag very carefully. It was within the limit, yet they said it was too big, so we ended up paying an extra $100 for that too!! So it wasn’t the cheap flight we thought it would be. Then, they moved up our initial flight to depart 3 hours earlier which meant we had to be out on the road by 7 am and then have a 6 hour layover and we got home at 2am. It was a grueling day. I won’t be flying with them again.

Overall it was a good experience. Stewards were very kind and professional. The departure and arrival times were as promised. Plane was clean.

Terrible as usual!!!! Very unprofessional and rude flight attendants! You get what you pay for! HORRIBLE

My experience was above excellent!!!! First the lady that pushed me in the wheelchair to the gate was outstanding!!! Then the ladies at the gate went over and beyond, by helping me fill out the immigration form! I would not have been able to get to Guatemala without their help!!! God bless them all! They were amazing 🙏❤️🙏

I fly Frontier because it’s affordable. I understand that the seats are tight and not the most comfortable…but that’s part of it. The problem with this flight was that there was a group of travelers directly behind me at the back of the plane who were ridiculously loud and obnoxious the entire flight. I’m pretty sure they were drunk and I could periodically smell an odd odor that I believe was one of them using a smokeless vape pen. The stewards had to remind them to keep quiet during the pre-flight instruction, but that was it. They never said another thing to them for the rest of the flight. It was a miserable.

Six hour delay. Poor customer service. No voucher. Bad communication. Missed important appointments.

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

Flight delayed 3 times, resulting in late arrival, rental car place gave car away resulting in increased BS charges because I was late. Frontier blows.

It was impossible to change a carry-on for a checked bag after the initial selection. The flight was delayed 14 hours "to allow for a late arriving aircraft." The seats were shockingly uncomfortable. This was only the second time I've seen seats that didn't recline in an airline. The first was in an East Bloc airline before the fall if the Iron Curtain.

First time flying Frontier, I am not sure the Ala Carte menu of options is for me.

I liked getting off the plane. Everything else was well below standards. Not even offering a bag of peanuts for free for a 4 hours flight is ridiculous.

There was no wifi, there was no usb charger on the planes Frontier lowered the weight limit on suitcases from 50 to 40 pounds Frontier now charges for a seat...really? If i don't pay for a basic seat, do i stand the whole flight? Frontier now charges for the carry on, just like for the checked suitcase The bundle pricing is way over priced.

Bought seats on the flight and they were supposed to be 2 and a jumpseat. Plane clearly changed and it was a regular 3 seat row. Asked for a refund and was denied. If I wanted to sit next to someone else I wouldn't have bought the seats..

Flying frontier reminded me of flying with my family in the 80’s in all of the worst ways possible. From poor customer service to little to no technology. The plane was dirty old and also stuck in the 80’s. From their seatbelts to not having anywhere to charge our phones the seats and the equipment I wasn’t sure if I was being punked or thrown back in time. Needless to say I don’t see myself flying frontier ever again.
