Commerce’s violent crime, on the other hand, has been dropping at a steady rate in recent years, but it’s still prevalent enough to rank as the most violent place in California for 2022. So if you’re out for a shopping spree on Bay Street, be sure to get out quick, or your day’s haul could easily get snatched. The good news? Emeryville didn’t have a single murder last year, so that’s something.

Pismo Beach, located in San Luis Obispo County, California, ranks as the ninth most dangerous place to live in the state. Pismo Beach reported 95 violent crimes. Additionally, property crime is a concern, with 293 cases reported. Burglary is particularly prevalent with 31 incidents recorded.

The location of Pismo Beach on the Central Coast area of California adds to its allure as a tourist destination and a desirable place to live. The transient population that comes for touristy reasons can add to the overall higher crime rate per capita.

Methodology: how we determined the most dangerous cities in california for 2024.

Every year the FBI release two crime datasets on cities in California. First a preliminary dataset limited to the biggest cities in California, followed by a more detailed release at the end of the year.

For our analysis, we focused on the 2022 data, specifically the 2022 Crime In The United States Report for California .

So what criteria did we use? Have a look:

• Violent Crimes Per Capita
• Property Crimes Per Capita

In order to make the analysis as apples to apples as possible, we only considered California cities over 5,000 in population . That left us with 419 cities in California.

We then ranked each city from 1 to 419 for the two criteria with a #1 ranking being the most dangerous for the particular criteria.

Next, we averaged the two rankings into one “Dangerous Index”.

Finally, we ranked every city on the “Dangerous Index” with the lowest index being the most dangerous in California — Commerce. Any ties went to the smaller city.

This article is an opinion based on facts and is meant as infotainment. It is our tenth time ranking the most dangerous places to live in California and is updated for 2024.

In san Francisco, a major problem is cars windows being broken into for theft. As this is considered a “misdemeanor'” those who are caught are let go without being charged. Likewise, bicycle theft.

The numbers aren’t lying, but the author is definitely screwing with the facts. At the bottom, the list shows San Francisco’s violent crime per capita rate is smaller than Los Angeles (715 vs 716), and by all accounts, the trend shows the violent crime rates in both cities are declining, not getting worse.

In the same year, reported vehicle and property theft incidents numbered in the thousands. 

While Richmond may be safer than neighboring Oakland, the city is still one of the most dangerous places in California and the Bay Area. Residents generally consider the northeastern part of the city to be safer, with a major concentration of crime occurring in the “Iron Triangle,” or the central part of the city. With so much crime, Richmond is one of the worst areas to live in California if safety is a concern.

Modesto is also one of the most dangerous cities in California. It has a population of around 219,000 and a violent crime rate of 742 per 100,000 people, which is 188% higher than the national average. The most common crimes in Modesto includes property crime and theft. According to FBI statistics from 2021, Modesto experienced over 5,000 reported incidents of property crime and over 1,600 incidents of violent crime. Modesto is known for having one of the highest rates of car theft in California. In 2020, there were 2,091 car thefts, or 389 per 1,000 people- far exceeding the national average. 

Located south of Modesto, Merced is another one of the worst cities in California when it comes to crime. Located in the Central Valley, Merced has a population of 86,333 and a violent crime rate of 599 per 100,000 residents. The homocide rate in Merced is 12.3 per 100,000 people, which is the highest in the state and has led to the city being dubbed the murder capital of California.  

Even since the 1990s, crime rates in Merced have stayed consistently high, keeping the city historically ranked among the country’s most violent metro areas. While property crime in Merced has decreased by as much as 20% by the year 2020, violent crimes have been sharply increasing. From 2019 to 2020, murders in Merced nearly doubled based on FBI statistics for that year. 

10. Bakersfield

Bakersfield is another one of the most dangerous cities in California. It has a population of around 405,000 and is located near California’s San Joaquin valley. The violent crime rate in Bakersfield was 498 per 100,000 in 2023, which is 27% higher than the national average. 

In 2023, there were over 15,300 incidents of property crime in Bakersfield. However, according to Bakersfield Now, a local news agency, the city saw a 30% decrease in homicides in 2022 from 2020. Much of the violence in Bakersfield can be attributed to gang activity which has been a growing problem for many years. With an overall crime rate of 94% above the national average, Bakersfield certainly has a reputation for being one of California’s more dangerous cities.

One of my favorite things about living in California is exploring the many unique and beautiful places that somehow all fit into one state. In just my home county of San Diego, you can visit snowy mountain peaks or cactus-filled deserts and surf on sandy beaches — all in the same day.

One of the most critical factors that make a city undesirable for living is its crime rate. According to recent statistics, the violent crime rate in some California cities increased significantly in 2022. For instance, the rate climbed by 6.1 percent, from 466.2 in 2021 to 494.6 in 2022. Property crimes saw a similar trend, with an increase of 6.2 percent, rising from 2,178.4 in 2021 to 2,313.6 in 2022.

These figures are not only concerning but also impact the overall safety and well-being of residents.

2. Property Crime Decline – A Silver Lining

While the overall property crime rate increased in 2022, it's important to note that there has been a decrease of 7.1 percent in this category from 2017 to 2022. The rate dropped from 2,491.0 in 2017 to 2,313.6 in 2022. Despite the recent increase, this long-term decline may offer some hope for residents.

3. Mixed Trends in Homicides and Robberies

Homicides, a deeply concerning crime category, decreased by 5.0 percent in 2022 (from 6.0 in 2021 to 5.7 in 2022). On the flip side, robbery rates surged by 10.2 percent during the same period. From 2017 to 2022, the burglary rate decreased by a substantial 17.6 percent, providing some relief for residents (from 445.9 in 2017 to 367.5 in 2022). However, the aggravated assault rate increased significantly by 24.0 percent during the same period, reaching 330.0 in 2022 from 266.1 in 2017.

6. Felony Drug Offenses

Felony drug offenses are a concern in many cities. Fortunately, there was a 14.6 percent decrease in the total felony drug offense arrest rate in 2022, dropping from 78.2 in 2021 to 66.8 in 2022. Moreover, dangerous drugs and marijuana arrest rates saw reductions of 19.4 percent and 18.5 percent, respectively, in 2022.

7. Arrest Rates for Petty Theft and Assault

While there was a decrease in drug-related arrests, arrest rates for petty theft and assault and battery increased by 21.3 percent and 11.2 percent, respectively, in 2022. These statistics, from 44.6 and 211.2 in 2021 to 54.1 and 234.9 in 2022, suggest challenges in maintaining public order.
