We tested a variety of packing cubes to find the best compressible, highly durable options to consolidate clothing in an organized, efficient way, and make traveling easier. We think the value is unmatched given the amount of bags in the set combined with their sturdy structure and superb compression ability.

We used the cubes to pack an entire suitcase including shoes, pants, tops, undergarments, and toiletries across the varying cube sizes. After three months of use, we especially loved the small size for packing undergarments and separating laundry. Although polyester is a little less durable than nylon (typically used for packing cubes), the material has more give making it easier to squeeze a few more clothing items into the cubes. We had no issues with zippers getting snagged or stuck and the fabric feels thick enough that, if there was a spill in a suitcase, it could soak it up before reaching the clothes packed inside.

The zippers unzip three-quarters of the way around the cube, which makes it easy to load in a lot, and then, a second set of zippers compresses the cube's size by up to 50 percent if you packed it with flexible materials. We were able to fit a full week's worth of warm-weather clothing — mostly dresses — into this medium-sized packing cube, and the smaller one is perfect for stowing for socks and undergarments.

Also, the material they're made of is incredibly lightweight and it's water-resistant, too, so your clothes won't get ruined if your toiletry bag happens to spring a leak. The best thing about these cubes is how easy they are to use and how durable they are.

Other Compression Packing Cubes We Liked

While we tried several sets of compression packing cubes, the two highlighted below almost made our list for the best compression packing cubes but they fell short due to a few flaws during testing.

Bagail Compression Packing Cubes : The material felt soft and the bags boasted spacious capacities, but the quality was questionable due to flimsy zippers and stressed stitchwork when the bag was packed.

Tripped Compression Packing Cubes for Travel : The set of cubes have water-resistant exteriors and solid storage capacities, but the $50 price seems a bit too high considering the zippers and stitching felt weak.

We tested 23 sets of packing cubes in our New York City lab and found there were several sets of compression-specific packing cubes that had stellar performances during our tests where we rated the cubes on a scale of one to five based on capacity, design, and quality.

After unboxing the packing cubes, we thoroughly examined the quality of each bag by twisting and pulling on the cubes with it zipped and open to see how the material and stitchwork held up with some pressure. The cubes scoring highest for quality appeared to be made with durable materials and stitching, and had smooth and tough zippers. Then, we packed the cubes full of clothes, undergarments, shoes, and toiletries to judge the capacity of the varying-sized cubes. It was during this test that we evaluated the consolidation ability of the compression cubes by pressing the air out of each bag and closing the compression zipper before we placed the cubes into a standard carry-on suitcase. Our favorite compression cubes for capacity were able to fit a solid amount of items and zipped down easily.

All of our top-performing compression cubes had sleek designs that helped us pack in an organized and efficient way, and saved a noticeable amount of space in the carry-on with room leftover for other items, if desired. We splashed water on the outside of each cube to see how protective the material was, since many of the brands we tested claimed the bags were waterproof or water-resistant. Lastly, we were unaware of the cost of each set of compression packing cubes and were only made aware of the price after testing was completed to judge the value based on its performance.

After testing the packing cubes in our lab, we sent each set home with testers to use during their real-world travels. Over a period of six months, we checked in with the testers to see how the compression cubes were performing and updated this article accordingly.

Tips for Buying Compression Packing Cubes

Consider how many you want.

There are plenty of packing cube sets ranging from one to six (or more!) cubes included. For travelers looking to fill a carry-on or checked bag with cubes, we recommend getting a set with multiple bags in varying sizes to get the best value. If you’re planning to pack boots or a bulky jacket, a single compression cube could do the trick without having to buy a whole set.

Look for high-quality materials

Most of the compression cubes we tested were made of nylon which is known for being an ultra-durable material for soft goods like sports bags and suitcases. Polyester is lighter in weight than nylon but it’s a little less durable than nylon.

Check the dimensions

Before you purchase a set of compression packing cubes or a single one, double-check the dimensions of each bag to ensure that they will fit in your preferred suitcase. Some large or extra-large packing cubes could work great in a checked bag but they might take up a lot of room in a carry-on or not fit in a duffel bag at all.

Depending on the type of packing cube, some are machine-washable. If it’s not listed in the product description before or after you purchase it, you can always spot clean the fabric with soap and water, and then let it air dry before using the cube or storing it for your next trip.

Why I Travel With (lots of) Ziploc Bags

Here are 10 reasons why you should buy Ziploc bags before your next trip, too!

Some travelers carry small atomizers filled with their favorite scents; one squirt in a hotel room evokes memories of home. Others swear by inflatable neck pillows that allow them to sleep like babies even when stuck in the middle seat of a crowded airliner.

Yes, I do that, too, but the one thing I absolutely couldn’t do without is my stash of Ziploc bags.

My packing ritual always begins with grabbing boxes of Ziploc bags of different sizes. Here are some reasons why I use these indispensable, featherweight travel aids:

1 – Keep clothes neat

I fold all of my blouses with tissue paper in between the folds and place each one individually in a Ziploc bag.

This keeps each garment remarkably wrinkle-free and clean. I use the same technique for lightweight jackets and sweaters, too. (By the way, slacks and jeans are usually folded in half at the bottom of my suitcase—underneath the bags.)

When I plan to re-wear an item, I return it to the same bag, folded as neatly as it was the first time. I almost fool myself when I take it out again because it looks so fresh—like it was just washed and ironed.

2 – Provide a barrier separating dirty from clean

When the outside pockets can’t accommodate all my laundry, I use jumbo-size Ziploc bags to store dirty clothes and undergarments inside my suitcase.

3 – Make it easier to pack and repack

Travel often involves moving from one destination to another. If there is ample time and room to unpack, I do. It’s more pleasant than living out of a suitcase.

But moving the Ziploc bags from a suitcase to shelves and/or drawers (and doing that in the opposite direction) is far easier when items are bagged rather than loose. 

When I bring some items home unused, they are ready to go on my next trip!

4 – Offer security against bringing bedbugs home

If you are bedbug-phobic, you probably cringed when I said that I place clothes in drawers or on wardrobe shelves on hotels or cruise ships.

However, when Ziploc bags are sealed, there is less risk of bringing home bedbugs or other critters—than had you placed belongings in drawers without them.

5 – Protect belongings from liquid spills

Of course, TSA has recognized the beauty of the Ziploc bag with its 3-1-1 policies. But there may be some liquids or sprays you can’t place in your carry-on.

Recently, I made the mistake of bringing along a bottle of hair conditioner with a tilt cap. Never again. The pressure of something in my suitcase leaned against it, tilting the cap. The contents poured into the Ziploc but didn’t get anywhere else. Saved by the Ziploc!

6 – Hold bathing suits and damp clothes until you can dry them

If you have ever hand-laundered underwear that didn’t dry by the time you had to check out of your room or have gone swimming the night before packing, you’ll be happy to have a few Ziplocs stowed in your suitcase.

If you want to bring back part of your half-eaten meal to your hotel room or purchase a snack to bring back to your cruise ship stateroom, Ziploc bags come in handy for storing bread, cheese, fruit, nuts, or whatever else strikes your fancy. (My bags often hold chocolate.)

9 – Keep dust bunnies away

If you ever had a “dust bunny” appear in sequential photos, you’ll appreciate this tip. Sometimes, placing a camera in your pocket or a cellphone camera exposes it to dust that glomps onto the sensor, which produces a small spot on each and every picture.

Cleaning it off without the right tools or know-how can be difficult so prevention is the best approach. Keeping your camera in a sandwich-size Ziploc can help avoid this vexing problem.

10- They are economical

Based on interviews with food safety experts, a recent post on Simply Recipes addressed the issue of whether or not it was safe to re-use Ziploc bags. 

When you are using them for packing and storing clothes, the answer is a no-brainer. But even in the case of foodstuffs, experts saythat it is safe to re-use them with a few limitations. They urge caution when the bags have held raw meat, fish, eggs, or potentially allergy-triggering foods. 

You also need to be careful about re-using bags that have previously held wet items (e.g., bathing suits) including toiletries. But by and large, they are durable and it’s economical to use them over and over.

Hi Irene, Thanks for reminding me of nine ways to use zip lock bags. I would like to suggest a tenth way. I use the snack size zip lock bags for my daily pill consumption. Each little bag carries one day’s consumption of pills and vitamins. I have found that this saves precious space in the suitcase and/or cartry-on. Pill bottles, or those hard plastic daily pill containers are not as easy to pack. Though Sadie would disapprove, I dispose of each bag after I have taken my daily dose.

Also stick with the name brand zip lock bags. I bought some generic ones in a Dollar Store and yes, they locked, however they did not UNlock. I had to cut them open. Very frustrating!

I do use them for travel. Carry medication in the original bottles with attached label when flying is important, though. TSA can and has taken necessary meds that were just in baggies because they could be anything. Not wanting to go to jail for the Mr.’s diabetic meds, we never take them from the pharmacy bottles.

I use them for hygiene items, always. The toothpaste in one. The toothbrush in another. Hair brush in one. Etc. it keeps me from cleaning them constantly and eliminates the possibility of them contaminating anything else not bagged.

Damp bathing suit in a plastic bag equals heavy stinking garment when you unpack. No way! Use your hair dryer on it and discreetly carry it in a mesh bag.

Just until you have time to wash it or dry it! Good idea about the hair dryer but I prefer plastic to mesh!

I ALWAYS travel with Ziplock bags as well. My stash never leaves my suitcase unless I had a spill but as soon as they dry out, they’re back in the suitcase. In addition to ziplock, I’ve got bags from Canada customs and laundry bags from every hotel I’ve stayed at.

Hi Irene, I have used the plastic bags for years when traveling and rarely throw them out (they can be recycled, though, with other plastics). Most of my trips are short and domestic, so I never put clothes in a dresser drawer in a hotel room. It also makes it quicker to keep the bags and clothes in your luggage in case you want a late breakfast, a last-minute trip to the fitness center or a late swim before you have to check out. (I always think checkout times are TOO early, but maybe it’s because I’m a night owl and late riser!) The ziplock bags also keep dirty shoes and sneakers from coming into contact with clothes. I pack my lighter sweaters or blouses in small, light mesh bags about the size of a folded-up blouse. They’re TIDY TOTES from a company called Blink. They’re like the large-size mesh laundry bags. The dollar stores used to sell the small mesh bags 4 for $1 and I also bought them as a gift for traveling friends.

Regarding preventing spilled liquids in your suitcase, I take 2 preventative measures: 1) I use 3M strapping tape (the type you use to seal a box for shipping) and I seal every bottle I bring with strapping tape(even tilt caps). 2) Then I load all those little bottles into a toiletries carrier I got from Mary Kay years ago that has 4 zippered plastic pouches which roll up & velcro together to cushion each other. Since doing this I have only had 1 bottle come open & it just spilled into the plastic pouch which I was able to wipe out later. I now carry strapping tape (as well as baggies)with me in my suitcase so that I can strap all the bottles back up again when I am ready to travel home. It takes a little time but saves lots of hassles later. I also use baggies for all sorts of things when packing including most of the uses you list above (going to try it on clothes now though). Just curious as to what size zip lock you use for your tops, blouses and sweaters. Are gallon bags a good size; freezer or storage? Thanks for all the tips. I use zip lock for many of my travel needs, but I have never used them for clothes. I have heard that plastic in general, i.e., bags from the dry cleaners help prevent wrinkles, so I am going to try the zip lock for my clothes. Do you think they will help the wrinkles on my face?!!

Just read an excellent travel tip on SmarterTravel . . . use a gallon size zip-lock to line the airline seatback pocket (You know, the one where people put glasses, used tissues, Kindles, dirty diapers, food and trash?) in front of you. Most people don’t use any packing organizers at all. Instead, they just stuff everything inside their suitcase and call it a day. But it’s much different for people who are traveling more often, whether it’s for work or leisure – most of them use some kind of packing organizers . But which ones are better – compression cubes, packing cubes, or Ziploc bags? In this article, we break down the differences between them, so hopefully, you can decide which option is better for you.

Pros and Cons of Using Ziploc Bags

A lot of frequent flyers swear by using Ziploc bags over packing cubes. It’s like they’ve been divided into two groups – those who use packing cubes and those who use Ziploc bags, and both of these groups think that their choice is the best one. But which one is right?

Let’s start by breaking down the pros and cons of using Ziploc bags.

Benefits of Using Ziploc Bags

• Cheap.  Out of all three options, Ziploc bags are definitely the cheapest ones. If a packing cube set usually costs about 30$, packing everything in Ziploc bags will cost you less than 5$.
• Available anywhere.  Even if one of your Ziploc bags tears during your vacation, you can find new Ziploc bags in any convenience store. They come in all kinds of varieties and models, some with regular seals, some with sliding sealers , and in various different sizes. Any of them will do, as long as they’re in the right size.
• Efficient at compression.  If you’re smart about how you’re using Ziploc bags, they can actually save a lot of space in your suitcase. Before sealing them fully, leave a tiny opening for the air to escape, and use your hands or knees to compress your clothes. Doing this on all of your Ziplocs will save you about 15-20% of the total space.
• Waterproof.  One serious advantage over packing and compression cubes is that Ziploc bags are 100% waterproof. So if you get caught in some rain and your suitcase gets damp, you don’t need to worry.
• Isolates smell from dirty clothes.  Bringing one extra-large Ziploc for your dirty clothes is actually a really good idea, even if you’re using packing cubes because this will isolate your dirty clothes from contaminating your clean ones.
• Organized in smaller bits. From my own experience, I find it more pleasing when everything’s packed in smaller packing organizers, instead of three two or three larger ones.
• Transparent. Another important advantage of Ziploc bags over packing cubes is that you can see what’s packed inside each bag, so you don’t have to open up each cube to find out where you’ve packed that special Friday night t-shirt you’re so desperately looking for.
• Adds close to zero weight.  Probably the most important advantage to Ziploc bags is that they don’t add any weight, which isn’t true for packing cubes and compression cubes. If you find yourself always maxing out on the weight restrictions for luggage, Ziploc bags might be the right choice for you.

Disadvantages of Using Ziploc Bags

• Less durable. In my opinion, the largest downside to using Ziploc bags is that they aren’t very durable. You’ll be lucky if they survive a few trips.
• Not friendly to the environment.  This ties into the weak durability of Ziploc bags – If you keep switching to new ones after every other trip, you’re wasting a lot of plastic, which isn’t good for the environment.
• More wrinkles. Because Ziploc bags are small, because they have a pretty tight opening, and because they’re compressing everything inside, your clothes will become pretty wrinkled. Out of all three options, Ziploc bags leave the largest amount of wrinkles.
• Leaves a faint smell of plastic.  If you’re using a new Ziploc bag, your clothes will come out with a faint smell of plastic. This smell eases out after each use, but because Ziploc bags aren’t too durable, you’ll be switching between new bags quite frequently.
• Harder to use.  Ziplocs aren’t really meant to be used as an alternative for packing cubes, so they’re a bit harder to get used to. With packing cubes, unzipping the main zipper gives access to a pretty spacious opening, which is easy to pack into. But with Ziploc bags, you have to stuff everything through a smaller opening, and after that compress them, which is much harder to do.
• Suitcase ends up looking like you’re transporting something illegal.  I don’t know if it’s just me, but in my opinion, having your whole suitcase organized in plastic looks a bit weird.

Pros and Cons of Using Packing Cubes

Other frequent flyers prefer using packing cubes over Ziploc bags. But generally, packing cubes are more commonly used by people who are traveling for leisure, just because they’re so easy to use.

Benefits of Using Packing Cubes

• Relatively cheap. You can get a cheap packing cube set for about 20$-30$, which usually comes with four to six pieces . It’s not too much, considering you’ll be using them for years to come.
• More durable.  Compared to Ziploc bags, packing cubes are a much more long-term option. You don’t really put them through too much stress either, so it’s unlikely that they’ll break anytime soon. We found the eBags packing cubes to be the most durable ones.
• Environmentally-friendly.  Compared to Ziploc bags, using packing or compression cubes is a much more environmentally-friendly option because you aren’t switching to new plastic bags after every other trip.
• Commonly available. Nowadays, there’s a wide variety of packing cubes that you can choose from, as they’re gaining more popularity among travelers.
• Odor-free. Unlike with Ziploc bags, your clothes won’t smell like plastic.
• Results in the least amount of wrinkles.  Out of all three options, packing cubes results in the least amount of wrinkles, especially if you roll your t-shirts, and learn how to properly fold your shirts, dresses, and trousers. Compression cubes and Ziploc bags end up with more wrinkled clothing because of compression.
• Rectangular. Because packing cubes are kind of rectangular, they’re a pretty good option for utilizing the space in your suitcase efficiently. Compression cubes and Ziploc bags end up being more ball-shaped, which means that you’re losing some space in the corners when you pack everything inside a rectangular suitcase.

Disadvantages of Using Packing Cubes

• No compression.  I’ve tested that for myself , and I came to the conclusion that regular packing cubes don’t save any space. They’re only useful for organizing everything inside your luggage. For instance, t-shirts in one cube, socks and underwear in another, and so on.
• Not waterproof. I have yet to see a packing cube that’s 100% waterproof. Some are water-resistant, I’ll admit, but most of them will soak up some water through the fabric or the zippers.
• Not fully transparent.  If you’re going to get packing cubes, definitely get ones with zippered mesh panels on top, such as the Amazonbasics compression cube set , so that you can easily determine what’s inside each packing cube.
• Adds some weight.  Usually, a full packing cube set will add 7-14 oz / 200-400 g to your total weight, which isn’t too much, but if you’re always struggling to stay within the weight restrictions, you should maybe go for Ziploc bags instead.

Pros and Cons of Using Compression Cubes

The third option for organizing items inside luggage is compression cubes. They’re very similar to packing cubes, except they come with an additional zipper, with which you can compress all of the items inside.

Benefits of Using Compression Cubes

• Good at saving space.  I compared the space savings between packing cubes and compression cubes, and I concluded that they save about 15-20% of the total space in your luggage.
• Easy to use. Compression cubes are very easy to use. You just pack everything inside a seemingly regular packing cube, close the main zipper, and then finally close the compression zipper.
• Durable.  Similar to packing cubes, compression cubes will last you a long time. That said, because of all the compression that’s going on, they might tear a bit sooner near the seams or the zippers if they aren’t properly manufactured.
• Environmentally-friendly. Compared to Ziploc bags, compression cubes are a much more environmentally-conscious option, because you aren’t switching between different plastic bags after every trip.
• Odor-free.  After being packed inside compression cubes, your clothes won’t end up smelling like plastic.

Disadvantages of Using Compression Cubes

• Most expensive out of all three options.  Although there are some cheaper compression cubes available, such as the Leantravel compression cube set , generally they’re pricier compared to regular packing cubes. In total, expect to pay about 25-40$ for a 2-4 piece compression cube set.
• Limited options to choose from. Compression cubes aren’t as popular as regular packing cubes, so there are much fewer models and brands that you can choose from. If you want something reliable, the Eagle Creek compression cubes  are a pretty solid option.
• Results in some wrinkles.  Naturally, when you compress your clothes, they result in more wrinkles, which is why compression cubes end up with wrinklier clothes compared to regular packing cubes. That said, I found them to result in fewer wrinkles compared to Ziploc bags.
• Adds some weight.  Similar to packing cubes, compression cubes add some weight . On average they add about 7-14 oz / 200-400 g to the total weight of your suitcase.
• Not waterproof. Although the Eagle Creek compression cubes are pretty good at resisting water, they aren’t 100% waterproof, which is a disadvantage over using Ziploc bags.
• Zipper sometimes gets stuck when compressing. One issue that I find a bit annoying is that on compression cubes, usually the zipper gets stuck in the fabric if you aren’t careful.
• Can’t see what’s packed in each cube. Most compression cubes don’t come with a zippered mesh panel on top, so you can’t really tell what’s packed inside each cube. If you’re getting compression cubes, definitely try to get ones with zippered mesh panels.

Which One Is Better: Ziploc Bags, Packing Cubes, or Compression Cubes?

There are advantages to all three options – Ziploc bags, packing cubes, and compression cubes. All three of them are solid choices. It just depends on which style of organizing is most comfortable for you.

If you’re looking for the easiest way of organizing your luggage, go with packing cubes. They’re cheap, they’re very easy to use, they result in the least amount of wrinkles, and they do a very good job of organizing everything. The only downsides are that they don’t save any space and that they add some weight. If, however, you want to save some space, you should go with compression cubes or Ziploc bags.

Compression cubes are great because they’re very easy to use, they’ll last a long time, and they’re a perfect option if you’re storing your stuff inside a backpack, instead of a suitcase. Your clothing will get a bit more wrinkled, but not as much as compared to Ziploc bags. They are the most expensive option out of all three, but they still aren’t too expensive when you look at the big picture – you’re paying 25-40$ for something that’ll last for a very long time, and make your vacations more enjoyable.

The last option – using Ziploc bags – is the most difficult one. If you’re willing to tolerate wrinkled clothes, a slightly more difficult way of packing and unpacking, and having your whole suitcase wrapped in plastic, then using Ziploc bags is the right choice for you. If you tolerate all of that, you get many benefits in return, such as waterproofing your stuff, saving a good amount of space from compressing your clothes, not adding almost any weight to your suitcase, and using Ziploc bags is the cheapest option out of all three. That said, in the long term, I think that the price ends up being very similar to packing and compression cubes because you have to swap out your Ziploc bags for new ones after every other trip.

Personally, I use a combination of all three options. I use compression cubes for my t-shirts, underwear, socks, hoodies, and other clothing that I don’t mind getting a bit wrinkled. For folded shirts and pants I like to use one regular packing cube because it results in fewer wrinkles. And for my toiletries, chargers, and some other smaller items, I like to use Ziploc bags, because they’re waterproof and my smaller items don’t end up being scattered all around the suitcase.

How to Pack Your Luggage Using Ziploc Bags

If you do decide to pack everything in Ziploc bags, here are some tips that might help you out. First of all, when buying Ziplocs, try to find ones with sliding sealers , as their easier to use multiple times. Regular ones will also do, but sliding ones will be better.

Next, you need to decide what to pack in each Ziploc, which depends on how large Ziploc bags you have on hand. For clothing, go with 5-10 liter Ziploc bags, and 1-3 liter bags for smaller items. Because Ziploc bags are harder to open and close, try separating your outfits between different days. For instance, in one Ziploc pack everything for Monday, in the second one everything for Tuesday, and so on. In a carry-on, remember to pack your toiletries in a 1-liter Ziploc. Separate your smaller items into smaller Ziploc bags like this – chargers and electronics, dry toiletries and medicine, documents and valuables, snacks, and socks and underwear.

To maximize the amount of space, compress the Ziploc bags. You can do that by packing everything inside the bag, then closing it about 4/5 of the way, then using your hand or knee for compressing everything, and finishing off by quickly sealing the bag.

How to Pack Your Luggage Using Packing Cubes

Packing cubes can be a bit tricky to get used to when you first receive them. That’s because you don’t know how many of them actually fit in your luggage, and how much space is left. You have to do some testing yourself, to find out how many you should use. In general though, in a regular carry-on, about 3-4 packing cubes is enough.

I usually pack my stuff in packing cubes like this – socks and underwear in one smaller packing cube, rolled up t-shirts in another smaller or medium packing cube, folded up Shirts, pants, and shorts in a medium or large packing cube, and if there’s some space left I’ll pack extra-large items in the last packing cube, such as bulky sweaters, winter jackets, e.t.c.

It’s easy to pack and unpack when using packing cubes, so sorting everything by the type of clothing is fine, instead of sorting everything by day. If you want to save some extra space, try rolling your t-shirts, shorts, and pants because this will result in only a few wrinkles, it makes it easier to sort through everything in the packing cube, and it saves some space.

How to Pack Your Luggage Using Compression Cubes

Packing in compression cubes is fairly straightforward, and doesn’t differ much from packing inside regular packing cubes. The only difference is that you have to compress everything after they’re packed full. Remember that this usually results in more wrinkles, so if you have the option to choose between a packing cube and a compression cube for your folded shirts, dresses, or dress pants, always choose packing cubes.

Also, compression cubes tend to work better when used in backpacks. In the picture above, you can see that they end up being ball-shaped, which isn’t too efficient for rectangular suitcases. Personally, I use compression cubes for all the stuff that I don’t care about getting wrinkled, such as hoodies, rolled-up t-shirts, underwear and socks, jeans, and shorts.

Personally, I like to use a combination of all three, but if you’re hardcore about saving every gram, then you should definitely go with only Ziploc bags. If adding a bit of weight doesn’t matter too much to you, go for packing cubes if you just want to organize everything, and go with compression cubes if you also want to save some space.

5 clear toiletry bags for travel that are TSA compliant

Thanks to being a TSA PreCheck member for nearly a decade, I can't recall the last time a TSA agent asked me to remove my toiletry bag from my carry-on when passing through security. Not having to deal with rummaging through luggage to remove your toiletries (along with electronics) is just one of the many perks of TSA PreCheck, the expedited security program.

But unfortunately, PreCheck benefits do not extend internationally. In my experience, certain airports abroad, including London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) , are much stricter in enforcing the universal quart-sized toiletry bag rule. In fact, the last time I flew from Heathrow, a security agent actually made me empty my entire quart-sized bag, which admittedly had several of the mini-sized products from the hotel I had stayed at sticking out. (In my defense, the products in question were Le Labo from the London Edition in the West End.)

Even so, I stood there and watched him put every last item back into the two plastic bags he supplied. Although I was slightly irritated during this process, it was a good reminder to travel with a compliant toiletry bag and to not let the opportunity for free La Labo result in trying to cram nine bottles into your bag at the last minute.

When traveling in Europe, for example, passengers are restricted to a one-liter transparent plastic bag for their liquids, aerosols, drinks, toothpaste, creams, gels, etc., per the European Union . Domestically, you must put your liquids in a quart-sized bag (approximately 7 x 8 inches in size, though TSA does not specify measurement requirements), with each product less than 3.4 ounces, per the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule.

Even if you are traveling abroad, all travelers departing from the U.S. must adhere to the quart-sized bag rule, which is why we've compiled this guide with some of our favorite clear TSA-compliant toiletry bags.

Since we love a deal here at TPG, let's start with one of the cheapest options on this list. Thanks to Bagsmart, you can purchase a three-pack of bags measuring 7.5 x 5.9 x 2.2 inches for just under $12.

"Bagsmart bags are inexpensive and have held up to my frequent use," says TPG family travel writer Tarah Chieffi, who also uses them abroad. "They are great for international travel when you often still have to remove your liquids from your luggage and put them through separately. And they come in a lot of fun colors so you can match them to your luggage."

Stasher Quart Bag, $19.99 at Stasher

Another budget-friendly option comes to us from Stasher, which I can personally attest to as having high-quality yet affordable products — I've used the brand's Pocket Bag ($7.99) to hold my headphones when traveling. Thanks to the brand's range of reusable bags which meet any size needs, it has at least two options for TSA-friendly toiletry bags, such as the signature Quart Bag, measuring 8.75 x 7.5 inches.

"I started using them as my go-to toiletry bag because they're super durable, washable, see-through (so easy to find what you need inside) and they have a little stretch, which is great when you need to cram in just one or two extra things," TPG global features managing editor Melanie Lieberman told me.

She also likes the brand's stand-up bags, such as the Stand-Up Mini Bag ($17.99, 5.5 x 7.5 inches), whose flat bottoms allow the bags to stand up on their own, a feature that is hard to find.

The Clear Pouch Set , $45 at Away

Away is known for its ubiquitous hardshell suitcases, including its top-rated carry-on, my personal favorite. Beyond suitcases, the brand has expanded into travel accessories, including its Clear Pouch Set, which in true Away style, features two TSA-approved bags, one large and one small, that are also spill-proof.

With a leather-like trim, these bags have a folded bottom that expands for extra room but still packs flat. The small one measures 7.3" x 0.8" x 4.3" inches with a 0.3 liter capacity, making it suitable for your liquids, while the larger one, at 8.66" x 0.8" x 5.3" inches with a 0.5 liter capacity, also meets TSA size requirements.

Plus, these bags fit seamlessly into the corresponding Away Toiletry Bag ( small and large versions are available online for $55 and $75, respectively) and — like all Away products — you can try this bag combo for free for 100 days and return at no cost if you are not satisfied. But based on my experience with Away products, you won't want to return it.

Small Clear Cosmetics Case , $75 at Cal Pak

If you are concerned about see-through aesthetics yet still want to be able to carry on your liquids (which to be honest, I can relate to), consider the Mini Clear Cosmetics Case from Cal Pak for $75. At 8 x 4 x 6 inches, it still weighs less than a pound despite being more substantial than the other bags on this list.

"The Calpak Clear Cosmetic Case is large enough to hold all of your toiletries, but still small enough to fit in your luggage," says Tarah. "The separate compartments help you stay organized and because it's clear, it's easy to find what you are looking for."

With a range of classic colors (mauve, stone, caramel and black) and limited editions like the dragonfruit one currently available, this bag is sure to meet your style needs. It has a lay-flat carrying handle, a water-resistant lining and features two zippered compartments to effectively organize your items. And, it's covered by a one-year limited warranty.

If you ultimately need more space and decide to check a bag, Cal Pak also has a larger version of the Clear Cosmetics Case for $95.

Bottom line

Each of these toiletry bag options is TSA-compliant to meet the agency's 3-1-1 liquid rule and quart-size bag requirements, so you shouldn't have any issues using any of them, even if you are not a PreCheck member and have to remove it from your carry-on to go through TSA security.

Although you could technically use a plastic Ziploc quart bag, it's 2022, and we simply cannot be out there using single-use plastic every time we travel.

What’s the Difference Between Vacuum Bags, Compression Bags, and Packing Cubes?

You may be wondering, if I just want more space, why can’t I just use my packing cubes ? (And if you’re savvy, you’ll obviously have Compass Rose packing cubes !).

In all seriousness, let’s discuss the difference between all three so you can decide which is best to meet your needs.

Airtight storage bags vacuum air out with a device that sucks away air pockets, usually a regular vacuum or one that’s travel-sized. The Best Gear That Costs Almost Nothing: Ziploc Bags

Many outdoor lovers are tempted by a stream of new and seductive gear options. But sometimes, good old-fashioned simplicity works best.

At the outset of a trip, I frequently find myself offering Ziploc bags to the rest of the group the way many folks would offer a piece of gum.

The underlying logic is the same: Likely, somebody wants one. And, if you’re doing it right, you’ve got enough to go around.

The diversity of applications these little polyethylene polymaths have, combined with their ability to slip weightlessly by the dozens into a pack, have raised them to “essential” status for every type of jaunt I take, be it a spell in the woods, a few days on the river, or a flight overseas.

Ziploc: Resealable Bags For The Outdoors

The word “Ziploc” generally references any sealable plastic baggy. However, when I say “Ziploc,” I mean Ziploc™.

Specifically, those gorgeously robust freezer bags. Their thicker material and sturdier closures are more adept than cheaper varieties at keeping the good stuff in and the bad stuff out, even after repeated thrashings in my pack or pocket.

Call me thriftless, but a few extra pennies seem a reasonable price to pay for something that might ultimately keep the fish guts off my sleeping bag in bear country.

How can you use Ziplocs in the Backcountry? Let me count the ways:

• Store toilet paper
• Keep electronics dry
• Purify Water ( really )
• Organize snacks
• Keep fire starters dry/organized
• Pack out trash
• Improvised floatation aid
• Makeshift fishing bobber
• Catch rainwater
• Start a fire ( really )
• Carry bait (or fish)
• Food prep surface, mixing bowl, measuring cup, and even skillet

And the list goes on and on.

Inside a Ziploc, I can toss my phone with an old koozie and it will keep my technological umbilicus dry and buoyant! At last check, a LifeProof case can’t keep my beer cold or my sesame sticks dry.

Although it’s not always warranted, I can’t help but anticipate everything I own getting doused or dunked when I’m out and about. It’s just the paddler in me, I suppose. As a result, I end up Ziplocking more than I probably need to.

But this has the benefit of leaving me with an ample supply to repurpose along the way. With them, I can cover, cool, store, seal, portion, hydrate, cook, and clean. All at the expense of nothing but a few ounces and some loose change.

No matter how many I manage to bring along, though, I can never seem to keep myself from squeezing in a couple extra just in case.

Are Ziploc bags eco-friendly?

I completely agree that Reusable Plastics are preferred over single use – But I guess I don’t (personally) find these a good option because the process of making them is still toxic….and don’t they still release microplastics into the water when washed? And still bad for our health when our food comes in contact? With so much bad information it’s hard to discern. And last, like everything else, reusable plastic will be discarded at some point and once it is, its still poses the same toxic risks as single use. Again, better than single use and I get that there is no perfect answer to eco friendly solutions… Thanks for the article

One way to reduce the amount of plastic you go through at home is to choose reusable food-storage bags instead of disposable plastic baggies. And though you might use those disposable plastic bags for any number of tasks — such as keeping food in the fridge or pantry or storing things like toiletries or office supplies — it’s hard to find a reusable option that’s as versatile. But it’s not impossible, and to find the best, I tested several options and spoke with nine experts including a zero-waste blogger, a chef, a chemist, and anti-plastic activists.

What we’re looking for

Reusable food-storage bags require some heft to maintain a longer life span. Food-grade silicone made from sand and PEVA, non-chlorinated vinyl, are both FDA approved and last an eternity. PEVA bags tend to be both lighter and more affordable than silicone bags, and dust and hair don’t stick to PEVA the way they do to silicone. Nor does it develop a slick, oily coating like silicone, which absorbs oils it comes in contact with that then become difficult to wash off. On the other hand, PEVA can’t handle heat, so you can’t cook with it, microwave it, or throw it in the dishwasher, as you can with silicone. Platinum silicone, the purest grade of silicone, is fabricated with platinum, which creates a stable, nontoxic material that can withstand heat up to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Products made from platinum silicone cost more than those made with PEVA.

Fabric — cotton, polyester, beeswax coated, etc. — may be more prone to rips and tears. But it’s also breathable and light, which may be preferable for food shopping in bulk or storing produce in the fridge. Sturdier PUL (polyurethane laminate) fabric, coated with a thin layer of water-resistant, pliable plastic (usually BPA-free), can be used for carrying a sandwich or storing things like cosmetics, but this coating can wear off over time and with use or washing.

Cloth bags close with either a zipper or drawstring and are not designed to be airtight. They can be good for carrying crackers for snacking but not for storing crackers without them going stale. Most silicone and PEVA bags close with a pinch-top seal, which is airtight and works better for long-term food — even liquid — storage in the fridge, freezer, or pantry.

Reusable bags follow the sizing you’re used to in disposable baggies: from snack size to quart and gallon size. Some manufacturers make only snack- and sandwich-size bags, while others offer mini and mega sizes to accommodate everything from earrings to pet food.

Care and maintenance

Hand-washing bags is not for everyone. If you prefer to clean your food-storage bags in the dishwasher, then silicone is the answer. Some fabric bags can also go in the dishwasher, though these may clean up better in a washing machine. Although some companies may suggest otherwise, PEVA should be hand-washed in cool water as it breaks down under high heat.

Best overall reusable food-storage bag

Material: Silicone | Closure: Pinch seal | Size: Pocket size (4 fl. oz.) to stand-up mega (104 fl. oz.) | Care and maintenance: Dishwasher safe

Silicone is the one material that will handle all things hot and cold, and Stasher is the undisputed leader of the pack (as well as a Strategist favorite ). Online reviewers note the bags are sturdy and leakproof. Food stays fresh longer in these silicone bags than when stored in plastic. Frozen food retains its flavor, and there’s no freezer burn. You can use the stand-up mega bag to microwave popcorn. And the convenience of being able to run them through the dishwasher makes them worth it for many.

Still, Stasher bags aren’t perfect. Online reviewers say that the seal can get moldy and is difficult to open and to clean and that the thick material can make it challenging to hold bulkier items. When frozen, the bags can be difficult to open. Strategist senior editor Winnie Yang bought several sizes three years ago and uses them mainly for snacks and lunches. “I wouldn’t use them for anything that usually stains silicone (like tomato sauce) or is especially oily since I hate dealing with the sticky residue that develops on silicone,” she says. You might also find that they absorb fragrances and off-flavors from dish soap or the freezer: To neutralize those, you can bake silicone for an hour at 350 degrees.

Best less expensive reusable food-storage bags

Material: PEVA | Closure: Pinch double seal, zipper, roll top | Size: Mini (½ cup) to 40-cup pet food–storage bag | Care and maintenance: Hand-wash

Wen-Jay Ying, founder of the café and farmers’ market Local Roots NYC , likes PEVA-based (Re)Zip bags. “They’re light,” she says. “They feel like Ziplocs.” She uses (Re)Zip for everything — bulk shopping, storing leftovers, and freezing food. “I also like them because they’re thin, so they take up less space than containers.” As a material, PEVA is less bulky than silicone, which gives the bags a slender profile that fits nicely in the freezer. The bags also cost a fraction of the silicone bags from Stasher. We like (Re)Zip’s innovative sizes, which include a 40-cup roll-top closure that is marketed for pet-food storage but would work equally well for bulk flour or a kayak trip. Remember that PEVA, unlike silicone, does not hold up under high temperatures. Although (Re)Zip says the bags are dishwasher safe, hand-washing them in cool water will make them last longer.

Best reusable food-storage bag for nonfood items

Material: Polyurethane-coated polyester | Closure: Zipper closure | Size: Snack size (3.5 by 7 inches) to wet bags (12 by 14 inches) | Care and maintenance: Dishwasher safe and machine washable

I’ve been using Bumkins fabric reusable food-storage bags for sandwiches and for organizing all the small things that end up at the bottom of my backpack . They’re superlight and come in colorful prints that can cheer up all things snacks to ChapStick as well as in patterns with Disney princesses or Batman that will appeal to kids. The materials are certified as Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, which means they were tested for toxic materials and passed. They are water-resistant but not waterproof. A little mayonnaise could be contained, but I wouldn’t pack, say, slices of watermelon.

I found the large wet bag ideal for packing potentially leaky shampoo bottles in my suitcase. A multipack of three clear-front bags (the largest is 9.5 by 8.5 inches) is useful for both TSA regulations and just knowing what’s in there. On the downside, any fabric food-storage bag will not last as long as something made of silicone or PEVA. One Amazon reviewer noted that the inside of the bag became sticky and then broke down over time despite hand-washing the bags. Other reviewers wrote that their food got stale, which makes sense since fabric bags are not airtight. For cleaning, I preferred hand-washing or a cold cycle in the washing machine. My dishwasher didn’t remove food residue or smells from the bags.

Best reusable food-storage bags for bulk-food shopping

Material: Organic cotton | Closure: Double drawstring | Size: Small (3.5-inch base diameter by 6-inch height by 4.5-inch open-top diameter) to large (8-inch base diameter by 10-inch height by 9-inch open-top diameter) | Care and maintenance: Machine washable

For bulk-food shopping, Life Without Plastic ’s organic-cotton fabric bags were thoughtfully designed for the task. The bags have a flat, round bottom so they stay open while you fill them, and they’re sturdy enough that they won’t fall closed and get beans or flour all over everything while you do so.

The large size has two layers to hold flour, sugar, or anything fine enough to sift through fabric. The inner layer is a dense weave, while the outer layer is a heavy cotton. Each layer has its own drawstring to tightly twice-seal the bag shut. The seam on the inner bag sits on the outside so particles don’t get stuck there. And every bag has its tare weight printed on the front so the weight of the bag can be deducted from the total price of your items.

Best compostable reusable food-storage bags

Material: Beeswax-, jojoba oil–, and tree resin–coated organic cotton | Closure: Fold and press | Size: Small (6.5 by 4.5 inches), medium (6.5 by 8.5 inches), large (14 by 11 inches) | Care and maintenance: Hand-wash

If you are as concerned about eventually disposing of your reusable-food-storage bag as using it, then beeswax bags are a great pick. Jackie Nuñez, founder of the Plastic Pollution Coalition’s Last Plastic Straw project, likes BeeBAGZ because they can truly be diverted from the waste stream. Once they’ve lost their coating, they are compostable or can be repurposed into fire-starter strips. Many Amazon reviewers praise the bags for doing a great job of keeping food fresh. “A cut apple did not oxidize after three days,” one reviewer writes.
