UPDATE (10 p.m. Pacific time): We were able to get a late co-op session and have updated the review text with our thoughts. The co-op’s smooth connectivity and improvements to the side objectives raise our score to 85/100 .

Editor’s note: We were unable to play any of Dead Rising 3’s co-op campaign prior to the review embargo due to technical difficulties. We are attempting to resolve the issue with Microsoft, but this review and its score does not reflect co-op.

Los Perdidos is bigger than anything Dead Rising has seen before.

The city in this Xbox One launch game from Microsoft Games Studio and Capcom Vancouver is gigantic, bigger than every area in the first two games put together — and it’s teeming with zombies. It’s full of side missions and weapon-crafting, all of which makes Dead Rising 3 an ambitious evolution of the cult-favorite hack-and-slash action franchise.

GamesBeat Summit Call for Speakers

We’re thrilled to open our call for speakers to our flagship event, GamesBeat Summit 2024 hosted in Los Angeles, where we will explore the theme of “Resilience and Adaption”.

While the difficulty curve is shot and a city this big should never lack a fast travel system, Dead Rising 3 stands out among Xbox One launch titles as a solid adventure with the potential for hours of gameplay.

What you’ll like

The tale of Nick Ramos and his survivor pals can be amusingly bizarre

The move to a more open world brings with it a surprisingly cutscene-heavy story that’s on a much grander scale than earlier Dead Rising games. Nick Ramos, mechanic extraordinaire, is part of a small group of survivors in the fictional Californian city of Los Perdidos. The urban sprawl is three days into a zombie outbreak, with hastily mounted quarantine zones falling apart at the seams. It’s not too long before the military announces a scorched earth fail-safe plan of bombing Los Perdidos, leaving a ticking clock over Nick and the survivors as they search for a way out of the city.

The story of Dead Rising 3, outside of its achingly routine premise and progression of events, is at times bizarre and idiotic. But it’s almost always amusing. Nick himself is more a plot device than interesting character, but the multiple groups of other survivors he encounters are a more amiable lot. Boss characters in particular are a distinctive and ridiculous bunch, each equipped with their own batch of histrionics.

Making weapons is Dead Rising 3's most addictive gameplay hook.

Above: Making weapons is Dead Rising 3’s most addictive gameplay hook.

Weapon crafting is as addictive as ever

To simply state that Dead Rising 3’s protagonist, Nick, is a mechanic sells its central draw seriously short. Like previous Dead Rising protagonists Frank West and Chuck Greene before him, Nick can MacGuyver his way to a wide variety of instruments of death without so much as a roll of electrical tape in sight. Finding blueprints opens the option to combine two weapons or components from the radial menu into more devastating implements of death.

Unlike Frank or Chuck, Nick doesn’t even need to find a work bench to initiate the crafting process. Players can make new weapons or items seamlessly, with only a brief progress bar between you and a new toy. One-hundred and one blueprints are scattered across Los Perdidos for players to find, and hunting down each new toy and trying it out on the nearest horde is the true joy of Dead Rising 3.

Not all of Ramos’s monstrosities are equal when it comes to combat effectiveness, but the duds make up for their failings by being charmingly stupid. The slapper, a pair of boxing gloves attached to a broom, largely comes to mind. What makes the process of weapon combination so perpetually engrossing is the prevalence of materials in every environment. Previous Dead Rising games were stuffed with interactive objects, but in Dead Rising 3 each room, storefront, or curb has handfuls of litter that you can use. Each new type of material or object Nick picks up is also automatically stored in a weapon locker located in the many safe houses for later experimentation.

Side objectives galore

The amount of diversions in Dead Rising 3 borders on excessive. Side objectives are largely divided between rescuing survivors from  surrounding zombies, fetching objects for potential companions, survival challenges that force a set of combat conditions under a time limit, battles with deranged “Psycho” minibosses, and destroying speakers that attract troublesome hordes of the undead. Add in the collection of blueprints and golden statues of Dead Rising star Frank West and the single-player campaign length can easily double when roaming around the map.

And while the plethora of fetch quests may grate on the nerves after a while, the rewards for persevering are usually worth the grind. Every task Nick completes earns Prestige Points (PP) that factor into leveling up. Reaching a new level awards points to spend on a variety of upgrades like health and melee damage, along with streamlined crafting options. Putting points into certain skills will also unlock extra combat moves or unique blueprints. The levels rise extremely fast in the early chapters of the game, long enough to hook players to the process before it all evens out towards the halfway point. A series of secondary PP trials invite players along a gauntlet of extra challenges, although most are busy work players will complete without planning to.

Your guide to surviving the undead hordes in ‘Dead Rising 3’

Adam Rosenberg

You’ve got the skills

One of the big changes in  Dead Rising 3 is a choice-driven skill tree that allows you to spend attribute points you earn with each new level and completed chapter in whichever direction you choose. Previous Dead Rising games offered no choice to how your character’s abilities improved, so this is a big change. Character progression carries over across all games, same as ever, so you always want to think with the big picture in mind when you’re assigning attribute points. Every 10 levels you climb through ups the number of attribute points you get by one; so from levels 1-9 you get one point per level, 10-19 you get two points, and so on.

You’ll want to focus primarily on inventory for your first few levels earned (which should come relatively quickly). Try to get yourself up to at least five item slots before you cave to the temptation of assigning points elsewhere. Health and melee are also good ones to boost in the early levels, as is agility. The combo categories at the top of the skill screen relate to the game’s custom-built weapons. Spend a point on any of these categories to make all items in that category usable for combo weapons that use one component from the category. Yes, that’s confusing. Here’s an example: you really like the Pummel Blast, a combo weapon that involves taping grenades to a sledgehammer. You spend a point on the “blunt” weapons combo category, which the sledgehammer falls under. Now, anytime you’re carrying grenades and you happen to pick up a blunt weapon – baseball bat, crowbar, lead pipe, whathaveyou – you can make your Pummel Blast using those blunt weapons in lieu of a sledgehammer.

Avoid spending points in the combo categories until later on in the game, after you’ve amassed a good supply of combo blueprints. It’s just not useful in the early going, and your earned points are better spent elsewhere. The lone exception to this is the food categories option; put a combo point there to unlock the ability to create combo shakes out of any two healing items. It’s still not something you should prioritize immediately, but definitely consider it once you feel you’ve got a comfortable amount of health and inventory slots.

Time  is a factor

If you’ve been following  Dead Rising 3 ‘s development, then you might be under the impression that the game’s Normal difficulty ditches the ticking clock that puts a deadline on all of your tasks in the game. Well … that’s just not true. The timer is back in  Dead Rising 3 , and although you have a very generous amount of time to complete the story and all secondary tasks, if you sit idle for too long and spend too much time smacking zombies with crowbars, you’re going to run out of time and get the dreaded Ending F, where everything explodes, all hope dies, and all puppies everywhere are lost forever. We can’t actually confirm that last point, but it’s probably true given the whole “zombies eating everything” issue inherent to any zombie apocalypse.

Time. You don’t have an infinite amount of it. Remember that. Especially if you’re multitasking on your Xbox One . Make sure you pause your game if you’re not solely focused on playing. Seriously. Ending F is no fun.

Safety in safehouses

Early on in the story you’ll get a mission that introduces you to the concept of Safe Zones. While having a zombie-free hideout isn’t new to Dead Rising, there’s typically just one central hub that you operate out of in the previous games. Not so in  Dead Rising 3 . Safe Zones are scattered across the city of Los Perdidos, with several in each neighborhood. You can find them easily on your map; they’re the square icons with the image of a house inside them. Green ones are unlocked and deemed “safe” whereas red ones need to be cleaned up. The first time you visit one, you’ll find a small horde of zombies waiting to be eradicated. Do that once and the Save Zone stays clear for the remainder of the game. You can also spot Safe Zones in the open world by looking for very obvious red circles spray painted on nearby walls.

You’ve got a few handy resources available in any given Safe Zone. There’s generally enough random crap lying around to build a combo weapon or two, for starters. If you’re using  Dead Rising 3 ‘s SmartGlass feature, you’ll also have a repeatable quest linked to every Safe Zones that involves dropping four food/healing items into a crate in exchange for a support request (airstrikes and the like) from your anonymous guardian angel. You’ve got the clothes cabinet for switching your wardrobe up using any article of clothing you’ve gathered. A survivor bulletin board that allows you to call in help from those you’ve rescued. And lastly you’ve got the weapons cabinet, which is a beefy enough feature that it gets its own section below.

Zombie world replicator

Ah, the weapons cabinet. Also known as  Dead Rising 3 ‘s most refreshing assault on tedious gameplay. You no longer need to go scrounging for parts every time you want to put together your favorite combo weapon. Instead, just go to a safe house, open the weapons cabinet, go to the “combo weapons” tab, and spawn whichever weapon you want.  Any  non-food/healing item that you pick up has a copy stored in the weapons cabinet, even if you drop said item immediately (down on the D-pad to drop any item in your hands). This includes combo weapons, so be sure to piece items together whenever you pick up a new blueprint; you’ll always find the parts needed to build a combo weapon right near the blueprint for it.

It’s not a total weapon spawn free-for-all. If you look at the bottom of the weapons cabinet window, you’ll see a blue bar divided into separate chunks. For “standard” item categories – meaning, non-combo weapons – you’ll see eight chunks in the bar. Go to the combo weapon tab and half the chunks combine, leaving four in all. Go to the Super Combo tab – a combo weapon combined with a third item, for added effect – and the number of chunks is reduced to two.

Each chunk of the meter represents one item that can be spawned. That’s why you get eight standard item chunks but only four combo weapon chunks; you could spend two chunks to spawn in the grenades and sledgehammer for your Pummel Blast, or you could just spend the equivalent of two chunks on a pre-built Pummel Blast. It’s the same “price” either way. The meter recharges automatically over time.

Dead Rising 3 also features combo vehicles (returning from  Dead Rising 2 ) and, much like the weapons cabinet, a vehicle lot accessible from any garage (green car icons on your map) allows you to spawn them in. Much like items, any vehicle you sit behind the wheel of is automatically added to your vehicle lot, regular rides and combos alike. Same idea here, only the meter limiting how many items you can spawn differs for the vehicle lot. You can summon up to four standard vehicles or two combo vehicles.

With  all combos, weapons and vehicles alike, you’ll need blueprints. Look for circular blue icons on your minimap. They’re often tucked away in hard to reach places, and they’re occasionally locked behind quest-dependent doors. Many more are freely available, however, so keep an eye out. Blueprints give off a golden glow, so they’re fairly easy to spot.

Numerical advantage

Los Perdidos is a dangerous place, one that is best not explored all alone. You’ve got a few options here. Survivors return from previous games, with some slight rule tweaks. For one, people you rescue aren’t completely helpless nitwits. You don’t have to babysit them on your journey back to the safehouse. Sometimes they’ll join with you right when you save them, but that’s so they can help you slaughter zombies, not die horribly as a decoy when you decide it’s just not worth it to save their useless asses. Whenever you’ve got a survivor following you around, be sure to give them a weapon – firearms works best – and keep their health topped off by handing them food items when needed.

Survivor AI might not be brilliant, but it’s considerably more competent than it’s been in the past. If you decide you’d rather cut straight through a horde as opposed to slaughtering it, your follower is smart enough to realize that it’s probably best to just push through the crowd. They’ll take a little damage along the way, but that’s why you want to keep handing off food. Survivors generally hold their own just fine as long as you’re diligent about keeping them supplied with weapons and health. You can call in any rescued survivor (or dismiss current followers) using the bulletin board at any safehouse, but you can only have one joining you at a time (until you unlock more on the skill tree, that is).

Of course, Dead Rising is also all about the co-op play. Having a second human along to help you is by far the preferable approach, especially since you can both summon in separate followers, effectively creating four-person zombie-smashing teams (or larger, at higher levels). To make co-op happen with a friend, form a party, have one person load their save, and that person can then send an invite from the pause menu once the game loads. Joining a stranger’s game – as Dick, the creepy, mute guy in the background of many story cutscenes – is as simple as choosing “Online” from the main menu and following the prompts from there.

If you don’t want to play with a friend and you’d rather not be paired with strangers, you can set  Dead Rising 3 to single player mode from the play styles menu. It pops up whenever you start a new game, but you can also get there at any time from the pause menu. The chosen play style – Completionist, Speed Run, Casual, Hardcore – helps to pair the right players together, but there’s a fifth “Single Player” option as well that sets your game to solo play.

Man on a mission

Missions in Dead Rising 3  work a lot like they did in previous games. The ticking clock that governs the length of the story doesn’t relate to specific story missions; in other words, there’s no timetable for completing any individual story mission, it simply behooves you to get through them all before the clock runs out. Sometimes you’ll get to a point where the game tells you to explore while you wait for one character or another to do something, but you’ll never have a ticking clock on an individual story mission unless the narrative demands it in some way.

Secondary missions, on the other hand, must be completed before a timer runs out. All queued up secondary missions are listed on the left side of the screen, with a meter below the name of the mission that denotes how much time you’ve got left. Blue missions are typically focused on survivor rescue, and they’ve often got some fetch quest attached. Red missions are  Dead Rising 3 ‘s Psychos, deranged lunatics that you fight in exchange for PP (the series’ XP) and unique weapons. Your main story missions are always marked by the yellow objective marker that is visible at all times.

Amidst Call of Duty: Black Ops 3's cinematic single-player campaign and addictive-as-ever multiplayer is none other than the franchise's signature Zombies mode. As is typical with previous and future iterations of the feature, players take to the task (by themselves or with friends) of ridding a particularly large, labyrinth-style map of a near-infinite horde of flesh-hungry zombies. Appearing originally as an Easter egg "Nazi Zombies" mode in Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War, the feature quickly gained notoriety for its addictive, over-the-top fun and change of pace regarding the gameplay. The mode has since become a staple of the series, with the latest iteration appearing in last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

So, when Black Ops 3 released, it came as no surprise the Zombies mode would also make its triumphant return, and, even less surprising, it's still a wild good time years later. Though the basic concept and end goal remain unchanged, exactly how you survive and get to pay dirt is as convoluted and difficult as possible. And that's a good thing. To help you enter the realm of the undead and escape unscathed, we've put together this survival guide aimed at giving you everything from the mode's basics to some advanced tips for staying alive. Good luck.

Horses are incredibly important in Red Dead Redemption 2. Not only does Arthur Morgan bond with his horses, but you can brush their manes and give them treats. They also serve a very practical purpose: They let you travel across RDR2's large, open world. While we love all of our horse friends, some perform better than others in RDR2. Here's how to get the best horses in the game.

For many now, gaming is an escape and a perfect tool for relaxation. Many have taken it up for the first time in years if the shortage of Nintendo Switch consoles is anything to go by. Fortunately, 2020 has been host to many fantastic titles this year. From PlayStation exclusives such as The Last of Us: Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, to smaller hidden gems such as Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Aside from the slew of new titles landing every other week that demand players' attention, there's also a host of older titles and CDKeys is currently hosting a sale on many of those.

The end of the year is looking promising with next-generation systems arriving in the form of Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X, but there has never been a better time to look back. There's massive online experiences such as the apocalyptic Fallout 76, or story-driven, action-RPGs in the form of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. No doubt there's something to tantalize you, whether you're a brand-new console owner or a seasoned veteran. Both massive AAA titles and hidden gems are included in the sale and demand players' attention to download and play. The Sims 4 (PC/Mac) -- $5, was $51

Dead Rising PC port test: smooth, high-res zombie smashing

Ten years after it released for the Xbox 360, Dead Rising runs beautifully on PC.

dead rising fast travel

I remember Dead Rising as one of the last games I played on a CRT TV—or tried to play, as the early Xbox 360 game was infamous for small text that was illegible on SD TVs. It was a marker that cathode ray tubes were fully obsolete. Ten years later, Dead Rising is finally on PC and it's the sharpest it's ever been—4K even. Maybe the text should be even smaller?

I've only played Dead Rising for about an hour, but the port appears to be in great shape. The framerate can be unlocked (and it supports G-sync), and I never dropped below 100 fps with an original GTX Titan. I should expect no less from an Xbox 360 near-launch game running on a 700-series GeForce, but that hasn't stopped other ports of old games from sucking. The reviews on Steam confirm that it's running well on other configurations, too—the only major complaint I've seen is a few players talking about corrupted saves , which I haven't experienced but is something to be lightly wary of.

dead rising fast travel

The graphics options aren't extensive—the only anti-aliasing options are MSAA, for instance—and Dead Rising still has the look of an early Xbox 360 game. This isn't a graphical overhaul, and I never thought Dead Rising was especially pretty anyway. But the important thing is that it runs smoothly, and with support for 4K resolutions we can finally appreciate Frank West's face in all its glory.

Dead Rising also supports ultrawide displays—I tested it on a 2560x1080 monitor and it worked great. The menus and cutscenes (which are all skippable, by the way) are stuck in 16:9, but the action supports 21:9 perfectly, with the HUD elements exactly where they should be.

dead rising fast travel

There are a couple annoying menus that require pressing Enter to confirm—when saving, for instance—meaning I have to take my right hand off the mouse, but otherwise I've had zero problems playing with mouse and keyboard. Running around with WASD feels just as natural as it would in an action game built for the keyboard. Mouse sensitivity is adjustable and keys can be rebound. And if you prefer a controller, Dead Rising immediately switches the prompts from keys to Xbox buttons as soon as you pick one up and press anything—something I've seen in several games lately, which I love.

If you've never played Dead Rising, there's also the question of whether or not it's any good. This isn't a review of the game—just the port—but I'll say that it was divisive among my friends when it first released. Time ticks away as you play, meaning you can't do everything in one run, and you can only save at specific places, so lost progress is going to happen. There are nasty boss fights. There's stress to it. But to balance that stress, you also get to run around a mall in silly costumes, slugging the brains out of zombies with benches and TVs and guitars and whatever else you can find. While testing the port, I ignored the cutscenes so I could wade into the horde with a potted plant as soon as possible—can confirm it was fun.

Dead Rising 4 Review

Frank west's return to dead rising will have you dreaming of a red christmas..

Dead Rising 4 has the best core gameplay the series has ever seen. Its inventive and humorous ways to put down the dead are something I still haven’t tired of, and its surprisingly interesting plot is more than just a zombie-killing delivery system. Despite the technical blemishes that come with the series, its lack of co-op story mode play, and the fun-yet-unreliable multiplayer, Frank West’s return brings the series some fresh ideas, a ton of bloody mayhem, and a whole lot of cracking wise. Here’s hoping he sticks around for a while.

If you just started Dragon’s Dogma 2 , it might have come as a shock that this sprawling open-world, role-playing epic is missing one common feature: fast travel. Well, it’s not quite missing, but it’s extremely limited in ways that run counter to the normal rhythms of this hugely popular genre.

The way it usually works in open-world games is this: You set forth on an adventure, heading out to unexplored regions. As you explore, you unlock fast travel points that make it easy to return to those areas. It takes a matter of seconds to get back to town when you need to rest, shop, or turn in quests. Even in games that prioritize organic exploration and discovery — like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom — fast travel is available, and usually free. It’s just accepted as a necessary addition to make these huge game worlds manageable.

Dragon’s Dogma director Hideaki Itsuno and his team at Capcom feel differently about it. In keeping with the many ways Dragon’s Dogma 2 intentionally makes your life difficult — restricting game saves to prevent save-scumming, for example — the approach to fast travel puts realism and immersion over convenience.

There are, in fact, three automatic travel options in the game: oxcarts, ropeways, and Portcrystals . Most wouldn’t really call oxcarts fast travel since they’re painfully slow, only run along a few set routes between towns, and, although you can nap to pass the time, your journey might be interrupted by bandit or monster attacks. Ropeways come with their own hazards , as they’re subject to aerial attack — and it’s a long way down.

Portcrystals resemble traditional fast travel, but with a couple of huge caveats. You need to use a Ferrystone to warp to one, and these are a very rare and precious resource. There are only a handful of Portcrystals in major locations across the entire game. If you can obtain your own Portcrystal you can place it wherever you like, but these items are rarer still.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 party at a campsite

All this means that during general play, fast travel is out, either because it’s too expensive or too inconvenient. You’re going to have to make your way on foot, and it’s going to take time — especially considering that nighttime hikes are inadvisable, so you’re encouraged to make camp for the night. Sounds tedious, right? Why did Capcom design the game this way?

The answer Itsuno has given in interviews is the one designers often give when they explain why they’ve chosen to cut back on travel convenience. To paraphrase: It’s about making sure players spend their time out in the world discovering stuff. “We’ve put a lot of work into designing a game where you can stumble across someone and something will happen, so while it’s fine if it does have fast travel, we decided to design the map in a way that the journey [itself] could be enjoyed,” Itsuno told IGN ,

It’s true that Dragon’s Dogma 2 has an unusually dense map that’s teeming with activity and primed for all sorts of random happenstance — even more so than the recent Zeldas. The more players zip themselves from point to point across this dynamic anecdote-generation machine, the less opportunity there would be for the unexpected discoveries and events that make the game so memorable, whether it’s a fight with an accident-prone cyclops or crossing paths with a pawn who might change your life. But, in truth, Itsuno only gave half an answer.

Yes, open-world games like this should be about the journey. But most of them are specifically about the journey of discovery. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is also about the return journey, making your way back, often by a different route to see what else you can find. It’s about conserving your resources, balancing the risk and reward of exploration, thinking about how much you can carry, and keeping a wary eye on the sun as it descends toward the horizon.

I love this stuff. I love anything that makes me feel present in the world the developers have created and that makes distances feel real. I love games that resist the habit of optimizing time spent playing them ; that, with a gentle but firm hand, encourage the player to just live in the moment, immersed in their adventure, rather than to play with one eye on a to-do list.

Travel is a hugely important part of interaction with game worlds — both practically and emotionally — so I get why Itsuno and his team pushed back against the impulse to skip it. Even though fast travel is easy in Spider-Man 2 , my son never uses it because he just loves web-slinging so much. (You should see him go soaring and pirouetting through New York City — it’s poetry in motion.) I know many people were bored by the long, featureless sailing trips of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker , but those moments of wind-blown calm, scored by the quiet rushing of the waves against the hull of Link’s little boat, are some of my most treasured gaming memories, a permanent happy place. Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding makes a whole game out of packing your bag and going for a hike, and its rugged landscape is the only other character that game really needed.

I don’t think World of Warcraft would have become half the sensation it did were it not for its approach to travel. When building the MMO two decades ago, Blizzard insisted that there would be no loading screens breaking up its huge landmasses, and that — with the exception of a Hearthstone item that would take you back to the inn of your choice on a one-hour cooldown — the only way to cross its distances would be to fly across them in real time by air taxi, watching the landscape scroll past below. In theory, this was dead time; while in the air, you couldn’t do anything but chat to your friends. But it was one of the things that made that world feel so real.

Restricting fast travel isn’t the only way to foster this kind of relationship with a game world, but it’s one of the most effective. And, for Dragon’s Dogma 2 , it was the right one. (Personally, I would have cut the Portcrystals completely; they don’t feel like they fit the world, and introducing fast travel only to make it awkward and expensive is a bit too contrarian. The lumbering oxcarts and treacherous ropeways fit right in, though.) Capcom’s game is a capricious, random, surprising, brilliantly conceived adventure simulator, and one of the few games to recognize that adventures are about the journey home home as well as heading out. If it had allowed you to warp back at the end of a quest, it would simply have cut itself in half.

Longford woman dead following...

A woman from County Longford living in New York was fatally stabbed in a bar, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).

Police say Sarah McNally, aged 41, was stabbed by a man in the neck at the Ceilí House pub in Queens around 6.30pm local time on Saturday, March 30 th .

She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

It is understood the man who attacked Ms McNally then stabbed himself. He remains in hospital in critical condition.

Police say the incident was “domestic” in nature.

Longford Municipal District Cathaoirleach Councillor Martin Monaghan said “our thoughts and prayers are with the family at the minute at this tragic time”.

“We’d be hoping the Longford community in New York would rally around and help the family in need at the minute,” he said.

NYPD said investigations are ongoing.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has been contacted for comment.
