Luxury Cruises to Iceland
On a cruise to Iceland, experience the island’s magnificent natural wonders. Tumbling waterfalls, otherworldly lava fields, vast glaciers, and plunging fjords are breathtaking sights just waiting to be explored.
Dip into the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon. Discover Viking history at the National Museum of Iceland, or snap a photo in front of the Sun Voyager, a modern sculpture inspired by a Viking ship. In Akureyri, sports and alpine trails at Hlíðarfjall are huge draws for travelers. See the “Waterfall of the Gods,” Godafoss, or take a relaxing mud bath at Lake Myvatn. On one of our Europe cruises that visit Iceland, you’ll discover that there really is nowhere on Earth that compares.
Iceland Cruise Highlights
Natural hot springs.
Enjoy the healing properties of Iceland’s famous hot springs. There are springs of all sizes, from Kvika Footbath, a tiny pool near the Grótta Lighthouse perfect for dipping your feet in, to the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s most famous geothermal pool. Here, restorative, mineral-filled waters, billowing steam, and therapeutic mud transport you to what feels like another world entirely.
Beautiful Fjords
Iceland is renowned for its breathtaking fjords, carved over the millennia by glaciers. In summer, ribbon-like waterfalls tumble over the rocks, and the hills are ablaze with the color of purple lupines. Hvalfjörður is a popular fjord just a short drive from Reykjavik, opening out to black-sand beaches and hikes with sweeping views. Explore the uninhabited islands along Borgarfjordur, or visit Siglufjordur, a colorful fishing village nestled alongside its namesake fjord.
Viking History
Head to the National Museum of Iceland in Reykjavik and discover the secrets of Viking settlement on the island. Admire the Sun Voyager, a futuristic sculpture that celebrates the significance of the Vikings in Icelandic history. At the Akureyri Museum, you can explore local history from the Viking era all the way up to modern settlement. Before taking in the geological wonders of Lake Myvatn, head to the visitor center to understand the storied lore and myths surrounding Akureyri.
Featured Iceland Cruise Ports
Reykjavik, iceland.
Cool, compact Reykjavik is one of Europe’s most exciting capitals. This cultural hub is filled with innovative museums, striking architecture, and fine dining. Admire the futuristic architecture of the Harpa Concert Hall and the Hallgrímskirkja church, and browse the shops for chunky Nordic knitwear and striking jewelry. The famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is easily accessible, while the dramatic scenery of the Golden Circle, including the plunging Gullfoss waterfall, is a popular day trip.
Akureyri, Iceland
Located at the head of a deep fjord, Akureyri is the gateway to the wild natural beauty of northern Iceland. Visit Godafoss to marvel at the magnitude of the thundering, 40-foot-tall waterfall. Experience an authentic Icelandic mud bath at Lake Myvatn, or join a whale-watching cruise to spot humpback and minke whales and orcas. A day trip to Siglufjordur is a chance to visit the quirky but wonderfully informative Herring Era Museum, one of Iceland’s best cultural attractions.
Isafjordur, Iceland
Framed by a dramatically sweeping U-shaped valley, sleepy Isafjordur is the gateway to the starkly beautiful Westfjords. Visit the Dynjandi bridal veil waterfall, which is more than 300 feet tall. Kayak the glassy waters of the fjord, or spend time at a traditional turf farm to learn about rural life in the “Land of Ice and Fire”. At the nearby fishing village of Sudavik, you can make your own chocolate at Saett & Salt, and learn about Iceland’s only native land mammal at the Arctic Fox Center.
Iceland Cruise Itineraries
Set sail on one of our Iceland cruises lasting 7 to 13 nights. Depending on your itinerary, you’ll also visit Ireland, Scotland, or Greenland. Cruises depart from Southampton, England; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; and Reykjavik itself.

Norwegian Fjords & Iceland
The majestic Norwegian fjords are iconic symbols of the beauty of traditional Norway. These are places where time moves in its own pace and there is no better way to take in the awe-inspiring beauty of this UNESCO-protected environment than from the deck of either a luxury cruise ship or a luxury expedition cruise ship.
Iceland is a country of extreme geological contrasts. Widely known as “The Land of Fire and Ice”, Iceland is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe and some of the world's most active volcanoes. It is also the land of light and darkness, long summer days with near 24 hours of sunshine are offset by short winter days with only a few hours of daylight.
The Norwegian fjords are just brimming with incredible contrasts and breath-taking stunning vistas. There are more than a thousand fjords in Norway, but most of the iconic ones - those you may have seen on the postcards, like the Nærøyfjord, the Sognefjord, the Lysefjord, and the Geirangerfjord - are located in the Fjord Norway region. The fjords resemble still blue lakes, but consist of saltwater - they are prolonged arms of the seas, often reaching deep inland with majestic cliffs towering above on both sides. Even though the fjords are often intertwined and you can sail from one fjord to another or back into the sea, visiting the fjords can make you feel like you are in a secluded universe. There are small villages spread throughout, and trails for both glacier walks and mountain hikes are plentiful.
The fjords feature pristine scenery and strikingly beautiful villages and they are tinselled with thousands of lazy waterfalls. Norway is also one of the best places to view the astonishing natural phenomenon that is the Northern Lights and other wonderful places to visit in Norway include Narvik, Bodo and the beautiful Lofoten Islands. We also love the breath-taking landscapes of Skjolden, the very quaint village of Nordfjordeid, Haugesund‘s Viking heritage and Kristiansund’s art nouveau Opera House.
Iceland is the youngest country in the world, Having been informed “only” about 25 million years ago. It is the second largest island in Europe after Great Britain. It's nearest neighbours are Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Scotland and Norway. Iceland is located very close to the Arctic Circle and half the land mass of some of the islands of the north coast of Iceland lie within the Arctic Circle.
With almost 80% of the country uninhabited, much of Iceland‘s terrain consists of plateau, mountain peaks and fertile lowlands. There are many long, deep fjords and glaciers, including Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull. The Icelandic landscape is characterised by waterfalls, geysers, volcanoes and otherworldly steaming lava fields.
Most luxury cruise visiting Iceland will call in to Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland. Reykjavík is Iceland's nucleus of culture and arts. By day, the café culture is supreme, but as the evening arrives people start filling the cities excellent restaurants, where local ingredients are served with fresh delicious lamb, seafood or wild game.
Reykjavík is a city of old contrasts: it is both cosmopolitan and small town; vibrant and sophisticated; young at heart and yet full of history. Other beautiful Ports of call often visited by luxury cruise ships in Iceland include include Akureyri, Isafjordur and Hrisey. Also, do not forget to visit the magical Blue Lagoon.
There is an exceptional array of luxury cruise and luxury expedition cruise opportunities that visit the Norwegian fjords and Iceland.
If you just wish to dip your toes in the water, there are many seven night Norwegian fjords cruises available throughout the spring and summer round-trip from Southampton. These are provided by Cunard and other luxury cruise lines. If you wish to view the aurora borealis, Northern Lights cruises mainly take place in February, March, October and November, usually round-trip from Southampton for 12 nights.
If you wish to experience a longer, more in depth Fjords cruise and include incredible Iceland into your itinerary, then there are a variety of 14 nights to over 30 night itineraries provided by most small ship luxury cruise lines. These will often commence or finish in Dover, Southampton, Greenwich or Tower Bridge. However, a flight to or from the UK is often required at the other end of your cruise, but a few, longer roundtrip UK options are available.
Iceland can also be visited round-trip UK as a main destination with the Norwegian Fjords as a secondary destination. These cruises are normally of 14 nights duration or longer and often include ports of call in the Faroe Islands, the Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands.
An increasingly popular way to visit Iceland is to take a small ship luxury repositioning cruise from the UK via Iceland and Greenland, these cruises are normally for 21 days or longer and also visit Canada and New England. They generally finish in Montréal, New York or Boston, But can often be extended to also include the eastern seaboard of the United States and end in the warmth of Florida, this makes a truly epic voyage. These itineraries generally take place in August or September and the ships often do the reverse itinerary in the spring.
Regardless of if you are planning a seven night Norwegian Fjords cruise or an epic adventure to this part of the world lasting many weeks, the luxury cruise experts at The Sovereign Cruise Club look forward to assisting you to plan the perfect Norwegian fjords and Icelandic cruise for you. Iceland, Norway and Greenland cruises
Arctic cruises offer a wonderful blend of experiences; from the awe-inspiring blue icebergs of Qaqortoq, walking in the footsteps of Erik the Red from the village of Narsarsuaq, Norway's Northern Fjords and the volcanic beauty of Iceland. Any passion for scenery, natural beauty and wildlife is easily satiated in breath-taking landscapes witnessed on an Arctic cruise, and the opportunity to catch a glimpse of whales, seals or a multitude of birdlife adds to the Arctic’s distinct personality.
You will also have the opportunity to experience two extraordinary natural phenomena unique to the Arctic region - continuous days beneath the enigmatic midnight sun, or a dazzling encounter with the elusive Northern Lights.
Making the most of every single day
Husky Sledding
A husky-sledding tour is the ultimate Arctic experience. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Nordic landscapes and snow covered pine forests as these wonderful dogs guide you through the arctic wilderness during our winter cruises, as you go in search of the Northern Lights. You’ll even have the chance to spend time with the huskies and learn how they are trained to adapt to the wintry landscapes.
Whale Watching
The coasts of Northern Norway and Iceland are popular hunting grounds for a plethora of whale species, including humpback and orca whales; which can often be seen from the decks of your cruise ship. Our on board programme includes talks and advice from marine conservationists from ORCA and OWE, who will provide guidance on the best way to spot these magnificent creatures, both from your ship and ashore.
Magical Northern Lights
The Aurora Borealis is one of Mother Nature’s most magical natural phenomena – a colourful display that illuminates the skies above with ribbons of green, pink and purple. For those wanting to get closer to nature, join us on a tour with a local guide into the mountains for the best chances of seeing the lights with little light pollution, as well as learningabout the myths, history, and science behind the Northern Lights.
Scenic Discoveries
Enjoy scenic cruising past some of the Arctic's most impressive sights, seen from the unique perspective of your ship, such as Torghatten or the Seven Sisters Mountain range in Northern Norway, the tranquil waters of Prins Christiansund, or the iceberg-filled Qooroq Ice Fjord in Greenland.
The Sky at Sea
There's very little in the natural world more beautiful than a clear night sky, sunrise or sunset seen from the sea. On our fantastic Northern Lights cruises our on board teams will be out on deck helping guests spot Mother Nature’s most imitable light show. During the summer months, join us out on deck to experience the celestial event of the midnight sun, when the sun never sets once you have crossed the Artic Circle.

The island has two separate parts: bigger (Nord-Jan) and smaller (Sor-Jan) linked by an isthmus (a narrow piece of land) with width of 2,5 km (1,6 mi). The terrain is mountainous, with the highest point being the stratovolcano Beerenberg (located in the north).
The linking isthmus is where are the island's two largest lakes - named Nordlaguna (North Lagoon) and Sorlaguna (South Lagoon). The only inhabitants on Jan Mayen are the stationed personnel working for the Norwegian Army or the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.
Transport to Jan Mayen Island is provided via Lockheed C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft operated by RNoAF (Royal Norwegian Air Force). These planes land on the gravel runway of Jan Mayen airfield. The aircraft fly from Bodo (Main Air Station, 2 hours away) 8 times per year. Cargo ships visit the island during summer, bringing heavy goods. The ships are anchored as the island has no harbours.
As no commercial airline flies to the island, the only way to get there by air is via a privately chartered airplane.
Since 2010, Jan Mayen Island is designated as a nature reserve (under Norway's jurisdiction) to ensure the preservation of this pristine Arctic island, as well as the marine life in the surrounding waters.
The island is also identified as IBA (Important Bird Area) by BirdLife International as a breeding ground for many seabirds, including little auks, thick-billed and black guillemots, Arctic fulmars.
Jan Mayen Island cruise terminal
Cruise ships to Jan Mayen Island anchor near Boat Bay (Batvika).
Landings on the island can be done only by boat (cruise ship tender boat or Zodiaks / large capacity inflatable boats). Landings are permitted only at small part of Jan Mayen, named Boat Bay (Batvika). Admission for landings has to be obtained in advance.

When is the Best Time to Visit Iceland?
Discover the best time to visit Iceland, a land of stunning volcanic landscapes, where every season offers unique experiences from midnight sun to magical northern lights.
There's so much more to the Nordic region than Norway. Iceland, with its captivating volcanic landscapes unlike any other place on Earth, beckons every curious traveller at least once in their lifetime.
Its northern latitude offers a strikingly varied appearance depending on the time of year you choose to explore. Join us as we continue our tour of the Nordic region by taking a closer look at visiting Iceland.
An Introduction to Iceland
The island nation of Iceland is a marvel of nature’s extremes and subtleties. Situated in the North Atlantic, it is renowned for its dramatic landscapes that include volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and lava fields.
The country’s rugged terrain is interspersed with glaciers and fjords, offering stunning views that captivate photographers and adventurers alike.
The culture of Iceland is deeply rooted in its Viking heritage , which is reflected in its literature, music, and festivals.
The capital, Reykjavik, known for its quirky charm and vibrant arts scene, serves as a gateway to the natural wonders beyond.
Iceland Travel Resources : Find & Book Accommodation – Car Rental – Travel Insurance – Book Guided Tours
With a population of just about 360,000, Iceland balances a modern lifestyle with traditional practices, making it a unique travel destination for those looking to explore a blend of wilderness and culture.
A Year-Round Destination
Although Iceland endures cold, dark winters, it remains a desirable destination year-round, thanks to its stunning winter landscapes, geothermal springs, and the mesmerizing aurora borealis.
Despite this, summer is the most popular season to visit. The prolonged daylight during this time allows travellers to maximise their experience of Iceland’s volcanic terrains and a plethora of outdoor activities.
Iceland in the Summer
Known for its rugged volcanic scenery, Iceland transforms with vibrant hues in the summer.
Green moss carpets the valleys, and yellow and purple wildflowers burst through the contrasting lava fields. This vivid display is just one of the many reasons summer is a peak time for visitors.
While most of Iceland doesn't experience the midnight sun, the days are exceptionally long. In late June, some areas enjoy up to 23 hours of daylight, providing ample opportunity to explore.
Evening road trips are ideal for visiting renowned attractions like waterfalls, geysers, and volcanic formations, including impressive lava tubes , helping you avoid the daytime crowds from cruise ships.
Summer is also the best time for whale watching. These magnificent marine creatures are typically seen in the deep waters off Iceland from April to October, but sightings peak during the summer months.
However, summer does have its drawbacks, mainly due to the surge in visitors, especially from the U.S. In 2018, visitor numbers in summer reached a record high, with around 804,000 tourists compared to the local population of just 380,000.
Although the numbers in 2022 hadn't fully rebounded, they were still higher than any year before 2016.
Costs can also escalate in summer due to the limited availability of rental vehicles and accommodations, particularly outside Reykjavik.
Early planning and booking can mitigate some of these issues, making summer a fantastic time to visit despite the challenges.
Iceland in the Winter
The winter season transforms Iceland into a magical snowy wonderland. Snow-capped volcanoes, frozen waterfalls, and ice caves create a stunning landscape that is dramatically different from any other season.
Reykjavik offers numerous indoor attractions, but to truly immerse yourself in traditional Arctic culture, engage in outdoor activities like snowmobiling, dog sledding, or ice fishing. Then, you can warm up in one of the numerous geothermal pools.
The aurora borealis, or northern lights , are a prime draw in the winter, visible from late September to early April.
Despite December and January being the darkest and often worst weather months, many choose October or February through March for aurora hunting to avoid the severe conditions.
Iceland in the Spring or Fall
As is the case across the Nordic countries , choosing spring or fall for your visit can be cost-effective. Both seasons offer plenty to see and do, with better availability and pricing for accommodations.
Early spring still showcases winter landscapes in some parts of the country, with the added benefit of increasing daylight hours.
Late March and even early April also offer chances to witness the northern lights. Puffins start arriving in April, adding to the natural allure.
Fall presents a beautiful display of autumnal colours, especially during highland hikes, though the weather tends to be cool and rainy. The northern lights season kicks off again in September, making it another ideal time for aurora hunters.
Plan Your Trip to Iceland
Choosing the best time to visit Iceland hinges on the experiences you desire. The island's diverse landscapes and weather patterns offer distinct charms in each season, promising unique adventures.
In the summer , you'll enjoy nearly endless days under the midnight sun, ideal for hiking through vibrant landscapes and spotting wildlife.
Summer is prime for outdoor activities, so book accommodations and car rentals early as they sell out fast due to high demand.
Winter brings the magical allure of snow-covered terrain and the spectacular northern lights.
For the best experience, prepare for cold weather by packing appropriate gear. Winter travel may require flexibility with your plans due to unpredictable weather, but the breathtaking scenery is well worth it.
The shoulder seasons —spring and fall—offer fewer tourists and lower prices, making them perfect for budget-conscious travellers.
These seasons still provide plenty of daylight and opportunities to experience natural wonders, though weather can be variable.
Regardless of when you decide to visit, here are a few essential planning tips:
- Book Early: Especially during peak seasons, early booking can secure better rates and ensure availability in hotels and transportation.
- Pack Appropriately: Weather in Iceland can change quickly, so layering clothing is key. Waterproof and windproof jackets, sturdy hiking boots, and thermal wear are essential.
- Rent a Car: To fully explore the countryside, consider renting a car. This gives you the flexibility to visit remote areas not accessible by public transportation.
- Stay Connected: Purchase a local SIM card or portable Wi-Fi for navigation and in case of emergencies.
- Respect Nature: Follow local guidelines to protect and preserve Iceland's natural beauty. Stick to marked paths and bring all trash back with you.
By considering your preferred activities and how extensively you plan to explore, you can tailor your trip to match your interests, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable visit to Iceland.

Review for a Arctic Cruise on Norwegian Prima
Onboard Prima now and with 2 days to go we thought we'd post a review. There are so many positives for this review but i will try and keep it short and sweet. We have enjoyed the itinerary although we missed Belfast due to the weather. We have seen the Northern Lights, dolphins and whales from the ship so have been very lucky. The ship is beautiful and the layout is fantastic, the service ... Read More
Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Norwegian Prima
We booked a Suite SJ Category with a upgraded package for Drinks, Wifi, etc. From Day 1 there was a constant noise in the cabin and NCL refused to do anything. After repeated complaints they gave us a voucher for future travel which doesn't mean anything. The Wifi was of poor quality. Then the stop to Belfast was cancelled. All the Port tours in Iceland and Norway were delayed. The ... Read More

We did not choose our 29th cruise because of the itinerary, but because we wanted to sail with the new NCL ship "Norwegian Prima". Boarding went smoothly without any waiting. First impressions were very good: modern looks, the corridors to the staterooms have a great "hotel feeling" and are very beautifully designed. The stateroom (balcony room) was the most spacious we ever had. Beautiful ... Read More
Review for a Europe - British Isles & Western Cruise on Norwegian Getaway
We chose NCL as we'd been on a few cruises before with other companies and have enjoyed them all. We mistakenly thought NCL would be similar. I would never, under any circumstances travel with this ridiculous company again and would strongly recommend others to avoid them. The ship is very nice, the staff are mostly approachable with a couple of very notable exceptions the interiors are ... Read More
Review for a Arctic Cruise on Norwegian Getaway
This was our fourth NCL cruise, but the first for quite a while preferring Celebrity and RCL but this itinerary included many of our “bucket list” ports, including Reykjavik and Lerwick (Shetland). It is very obvious that they are understaffed, and undertrained. The front-line help is courteous enough but not prepared or allowed to problem solve. There is lack of communication between ... Cabin Type: Mid-Ship Balcony Stateroom
Chosen for 16 day Northern Europe itinerary. 3 days of excursions were cancelled due to weather. Ship arrived late at two additional ports. On board activities were crowded, people had to sit on deck for many activities. Restaurant lines were so long they blocked elevator access. Onboard entertainment required reservations for many shows and passengers who attempted to book these on board found ... Read More
As you can see from other reviews, the organization and communication was very rough. I don’t know why. The lines to get on and off the ship and the waiting times were very long. Most staff seemed either unable or unwilling to control the crowds and the lines. It often felt like neither the crew nor the passengers knew what was going on. For example, the captain cancelled Dublin due to ... Read More
Horrible ! Horrible! The intinerary was amazing and the only saving grace for this cruise. The ship was horrible. Unorganized. Poor customer service. Food OK. Most stressful cruise I have ever taken. Stood in que for 1 hour in windy and cold weather before getting on a tender. Could find no NCL staff to talk to. When we noticed them, they were away from crowd gathered together. Noisy ... NCL GETAWAY 9/15-10/1 16 DAY WESTERN EUROPEAN CRUISE THE GOOD: The food was uniformly good. Whether in the main dining room, the buffet or the specialty dining rooms I had no complaint. See the 2026 solar eclipse with P&O Cruises
The breathtaking beauty of a total solar eclipse can be experienced on a p&o cruises holiday. care to join us read on to find out where in the world our ships will be for this rare cosmic event .
Editorial Team
On 12 August 2026, parts of the Northern Hemisphere will be treated to one of the solar system’s most astonishing phenomena – a total solar eclipse.
A solar eclipse occurs when the sun, moon and Earth all align, and our planet falls behind the moon’s shadow, creating the illusion of night in the middle of the day. A total eclipse is a rare phenomenon – the last one we saw in UK skies was in 1999. To witness one is extraordinary; to see it from on board a P&O Cruises ship is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Two of our ships will be perfectly positioned to witness the 2026 total eclipse: Ventura will be in El Ferrol , Spain, as part of her 14-night Spain & Portugal itinerary, and Arcadia in Isafjordur , Iceland, on a 16-night holiday to Iceland . Wherever you watch it from, you can be sure of one thing – this will be an experience you won’t soon forget.
- Arcadia's 16 night cruise to Iceland
- Ventura's 14 night cruise to Spain and Portugal
Iceland, Arcadia (J610)
Arcadia ’s 16-night cruise to iceland makes the most of northern europe’s long summer evenings..
An overnight in Reykjavik gives you the opportunity to explore the dynamic Icelandic capital with its bustling café and bar culture and thriving art and music scene. With a stop in Iceland’s unofficial second city, Akureyri , you also have the chance to visit the beautiful surrounding countryside, including the spectacular Goðafoss waterfall and the placid waters of Lake Myvatn.
You can also adventure in off-the-beaten-path Icelandic ports: in Grundarfjordur , submerge yourself in an otherworldly landscape of lava fields and glaciers in Snæfellsjökull National Park, while in Isafjordur , you might spot whales, puffins or the rare Arctic fox. And it’s here in Isafjordur that Arcadia will be docked on the day of the eclipse. It will begin at 4.42pm with the full eclipse about an hour later. This is the first total eclipse visible in Iceland since 1954, so don’t be surprised if you’re observing it shoulder to shoulder with awe-struck locals.
After her Icelandic odyssey, Arcadia will sail back to the UK and call in Greenock , where a late departure will give you time to travel to Edinburgh for the annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a spectacular celebration of music, dance and military drills.
Arcadia is exclusively for adults, so relaxation, restoration and exploration are paramount on board. On sea days, find a moment of zen in the spa , or sip Champagne on deck in the late summer sun as your ship sails along.

Spain & Portugal, Ventura (N619)
Family-friendly ventura will soak up the sun in spain and portugal on this 14-night cruise filled with beautiful beaches and scenic cities..
Spain is first up, with stops in cities such as Santander , the capital of the coastal Cantabria region and a bustling port with seafaring culture at its heart. El Ferrol , on the north-western coast, is where Ventura will be docked for the solar eclipse. It’s a radiant destination in itself, with ochre-tiled roofs cascading towards golden beaches and sparkling blue waters filling the harbour. You’ll want to have your head turned to the heavens all evening – the eclipse will begin at 7.30pm with the total eclipse occurring about an hour later, followed soon after by sunset.
After departing El Ferrol, Ventura heads to Portugal with stops in the lush Atlantic island of Madeira and in lovely Lisbon , where you can enjoy an overnight stay. The city is renowned for its food and lively nightlife. In the Bairro Alto district, you’ll find most of the post-sundown revelry, but Cais de Sodré and Príncipe Real are good options too – the former is brilliant for bar-hopping while the latter is great for sophisticated wine bars and relaxing rooftops.
On sea days, there are endless ways to entertain the whole family on Ventura , our fun all-rounder. Picture swimming in the al fresco Terrace Pool as the eclipse takes place above, then enjoying a night of stellar entertainment in the Arena Theatre. There’s also an arcade, sports court and children’s club to keep younger ones entertained. And for grown-ups, The Retreat al fresco spa and a glass or two of wine at The Glass House offers a chance to relax and unwind.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.
Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.
The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .
In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.
Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.
Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:
Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?
The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.
Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.
Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.
One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.
Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.
Is it better to see it from the beach?
Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .
Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane
Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?
Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.
Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.
Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .
'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship
Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

2031 Handball World Championship to Take Place in Iceland
- Steindor Gretar Jonsson

- News , Sport
The 2031 IHF Men’s World Championship will take place collectively in Iceland, Denmark and Norway, the International Handball Federation (IHF) announced today. The handball games taking place in Iceland should be played at the new National Arena in Laugardalur, Reykjavík, according to a RÚV report . Authorities have already announced that the long-awaited arena should be up and running by 2031 .
Small nation success
Iceland submitted the joint application with Denmark and Norway this time, but hosted the games alone in 1995. “This joint effort will not only elevate handball in Iceland, but also show and prove that small nations can organise major sporting events through strong international cooperation,” said Guðmundur B. Ólafsson, president of the Icelandic Handball Association.
Popular sport in Iceland
Handball is a popular sport in Iceland. The women’s national team competed in the World Championship last year and have qualified for this year’s European Championship, a tournament they also qualified for in 2010 and 2012. The men’s national team has also historically been competitive on the international stage, winning a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in China.
The IHF also announced today that the 2029 IHF Men’s World Championship would take place in France and Germany, with the 2029 IHF Women’s World Championship set in Spain and the 2031 edition in Czechia and Poland.
