How to Visit Gir National Park – Complete Guide

lion

How to Visit Gir National Park : This blog is my favorite. I was born in Junagadh and even though I never really lived there I feel this immense sense of belonging in this city.

Junagadh is primarily known for the Gir National Park: The home to Asiatic lions. Yes, this article is a well-curated guide on How to Visit Gir National Park and how to plan a perfect trip. But, I’ll also include all the lesser-known fabulous spots in and around the sanctuary. Just a bonus you know!

Table of Contents

Where is Gir National Park?

The Girnar mountain range is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.

Here’s to the geography geeks – the Girnar mountain range is originally a part of the Gondwana landmass. Yes, it’s damn ancient. The mountain range is situated in the state of Gujarat and spread over Rajkot, Junagadh, Surendranagar, and Amreli districts.

The Gir National Park is a zone within the Girnar mountain range.

As a tourist, Junagadh is the place you want to reach . The sanctuary is accessible from here.

How to Visit Gir National Park – Is it worth a trip and why?

I personally believe that Junagadh is heavily underrated in its tourist rating. It’s a fortified landlocked city with immense relevance in Hindu and Gujarati history.

The best time to visit is post-monsoons, the months of September to March present the forest in full glory. Also, the sanctuary is closed during peak monsoons for 3-4 months, and hence check out the schedule here.

How do I book a safari and what to pack?

We booked our safari online from this site – GirNationalPark.in . You can also just reach Sasan and book your safari offline, on the counter.

The two safari options in Gir National Park are:

  • Devadiya park

1. Sasan safari option

Sasan is an open jeep proper 3hours safari experience and Devadiya park is more of a zoo kinda experience. Based on your budget and adrenaline rush make your choice.

Sasan Safari is a full-fledged jeep safari with no guarantee of seeing a lion. As clear as that.

Lion in nature

2. Devadiya Park Safari

Devadiya Park safari is in a cage-like bus as you visit lion frequented territories. Also, Devadiya park has its own internal boundary and hence there are more chances of seeing a lion.

Choose your safari accordingly.

What to Pack for Gir National Park Safari

Junagadh is a warm place, so warm clothes should do along with the basic necessities.

  • A water bottle
  • Sports shoes
  • Sunscreen lotion – say you’re skin sensitive

Yep, that’d be all to bring along!

Here are some accommodations to check out in Junagadh before you go:

My visit to Gir National Park

We left from Ahmedabad to Junagadh by road (a 7-hour drive). Then we stayed at Hotel Green Park for the night. We’d pre-booked the safari online.

The safari closes in the evening hours so I suggest the early morning slot (before 8.30) or the last slot of the day( 3.00-6.00) because these times provide the maximum opportunity to visualize animals in their natural ways.

Gir National Park

Get Final Permit from Gir Safari Office: We drove to the official Gir safari pick-up point, mind you there are no private safaris operating in Gir. No matter where you’ve booked from, you need to get a final permit from this office.

We were booked for 8.30 am to 11.30 am safari in an open jeep. There are multiple routes in the sanctuary to avoid traffic and when your driver is an experienced one he’ll tell you a lot of stories.

Our driver was no less than an expert. He told us about all the wildlife as well as ayurvedic trees seen around the range.

Coming across two lion prides!

We came across two lions prides. Yaaay! The first pride had just hunted down a buffalo and was devouring it. I saw two lionesses and 3 cubs. The lion was nowhere around. The second pride had two lionesses one lion and a cub.

They were sleeping in the shade of a tree, as we parked at a distance of 15 feet one of them stretched and yawned!

This is out of context but in case you prefer organic food then do buy some organic jaggery from Sasan. You don’t have to look for it, it’s pretty famous among visitors just ask any shopkeeper.

So that’s Gir for you ladies and gentlemen!

Since you’ve come so far, then check out the other places around Gir.

Places around Gir worth visiting

  • The Girnar ropeway
  • 100 km from Junagadh, we have Somnath temple
  • To those up for the experience then every winter after Diwali, the Girnar Parikrama starts. People travel 36 km on foot inside the protected area. For a month the forest department issues permissions for the Parikrama. I haven’t performed it yet but it’s on my bucket list. Let me know in case you want to join in!

On that note, I conclude this guide on How to Visit Gir National Park . I hope it clears all your apprehensions regarding Gir and Gujarat as a tourist spot!

places to visit in girnar mountain

Girnar Parvat in Junagadh district is popular both as a pilgrimage site as well as a retreat for trekkers. At the peak of Mount Girnar, there is the Dattatreya Temple, which is home to the footprints of Lord Dattatreya. An idol of Lord Dattatreya sits inside the temple. Girnar Parvat has a terrain different from the golden sands of Gujarat and the verdant Gir Forest making it absolutely unique. Devotees visit Girnar Parvat all year round, and Datar Peak is considered to be sacred by both Hindus and Muslims. There are several temples here such as the Neminath Temple and the Meravasi Temple, which are considered sacred by people of the Jain community.

Other highlights of the Girnar Parvat are the Girnar Parikrama Festival and the Bhavnath Fair, held during the months of January and February. The remarkable thing about these festivals is that both Hindu devotees and Jain devotees come together during these festivals in huge numbers. One of the five major Tirthas recognized as Panchkalyanakas of Tirthankaras, Girnar is highly revered all over the country. The other names by which Mount Girnar or Girnar Parvat is known are Girinagar and Revatak Parvat. It should be noted that these are the names given to the group of mountains in Junagadh, and not a single mountain.

Girnar Parvat has an extremely rich history and the mountain is older than the Himalayas. The Jain temples on the mountain are considered as the most ancient temples in India. It is celebrated as the Nirvan Bhumi of the 22 nd Tirthankara Lord Neminatha. The mountain is 3666 feet high, and the highest mountain in the state of Gujarat. One can only see the peak of Girnar Parvat from the city of Junagadh, which is at an elevation of 351 feet. The other hills, including Jogniya or Laso Pawadi which is at an elevation of 2527 feet, Lakhshman Tekri, Bensla, which is 2290 feet, and Datar, which is 2779 feet high are between Girnar Parvat and Junagadh.

Fourteen rock edicts of Ashoka are inscribed on a boulder inside a small building just outside the town of Junagadh. It is located approximately 2 km from Girnar Taleti on the Girnar Taleti Road, and at a distance of approximately 2 km from Uperkot Fort on the eastern side. The circumference of the inscribed rock is about 7 feet and the height is around 10 feet. The edicts date back to 250 BCE and mark the beginning of the written history of Junagadh. Sanskrit inscriptions added on the same rock by Mahakshatrap Rudradaman I go back to 150 CE. Mahakshatrap Rudradaman I, a member of the Western Satraps dynasty, was the ruler of Malwa. In the edicts, one can find the story of Sudarshan Lake, which was either built or renovated by Rudradaman I. Another inscription referring to Skandagupta, the last of the Gupta Empire, can also be found here, and was written around 450 CE.

The building around the boulder was constructed by Nawab Rasool Khan of Junagadh state in 1900. Repair and restoration work for the same was done in 1939 and then in 1941. The structure’s wall collapsed in 2014. One can find replicas of these edicts just outside the entrance of Delhi’s National Museum.

Best Time to Visit Girnar Parvat

Girnar Parvat

Winters are the best time to visit Girnar Parvat, as the temperatures are low and you do not feel fatigued while trekking. Also, the Girnar Parikrama Festival and the Bhavnath Fair are organized in the months of January and February. This attracts a huge number of Hindu and Jain pilgrims to the temples on the mountain. Apart from the pilgrims, numerous trekkers visit Mount Girnar or Girnar Parvat. The trek takes several hours to complete and it is suggested to start the trek at dawn. Due to the fact that it takes several hours to complete the trek, one is advised to go on the trek during winters, so that there are lesser chances of dehydration. Temperatures during the winters stay in the comfortable range of 20 degrees to 28 degrees.

Rainfall in Girnar during monsoons is moderate, and one can plan a trip during the months of July and September. However, tourists must keep in mind that there is a possibility of plans being altered slightly due to rains. The good part about monsoons is that there is greenery all over and it is a treat to the eyes to visit during this time. The route for the trek, however, is made slightly difficult due to the monsoons and there are also chances of landslides during this time. Tourists visiting Girnar Parvat between April and June must make sure that they carry adequate water with them and keep themselves hydrated throughout the trek. The weather can be hot and humid during these months, making the trek slightly difficult. However, since this is an off-season, the trek route will have a lesser number of people.  It is suggested to start the trek very early during the day during summers so that you can reach the summit before the sun starts beating down with its full might.

Things to do on Girnar Parvat

Girnar Parvat

Girnar Parikrama

Girnar Parikrama is very important from a religious standpoint. People from all over the country visit Girnar Parvat, without worrying about the cold or the crowd. The Parikrama takes a devotee from Bhavnath to Zina Bawa Ni Madhi, which is approximately 12 km away. From there, one reaches Malvela, which is 8 km away, and then to Bordevi, which is at a distance of 8 km. The last leg from Bordevi back to Bhavnath is approximately 8 km long. The Parikrama is organized as per the Hindu calendar in the month of Kartik, from the 11 th to the 15 th . Devotees seek blessings at each of the temples along the way during the Parikrama.

Girnar Parvat

Just 4 km east of Junagadh’s center is Girnar Taleti, the base point of the trek to Mount Girnar or Girnar Parvat. Pilgrims often start the hike to the top early in the morning. However, some adventure enthusiasts also plan to make the journey during the night, preferably on full moon nights so that there is adequate light. There are various rest points along the way, and each point is marked with a temple. It should take approximately 4 hours to reach the summit of the mountain, which is the Dattatreya Temple. Every morning, there is an Aarti at the temple, and if you leave early enough, you might make it on time to witness the Aarti. Overall, there are approximately 9000 steps to be walked to complete the trek. The steep incline is what makes this trek difficult. However, the view from the summit makes the toil worth it and relaxes the mind, body, and soul.

Location and How to Reach

Girnar Parvat

Girnar Parbat is just 5 km from Junagadh, and accessibility is easy from different parts of the country. The nearest airport is Keshod Airport, which is at a distance of 40 km. From here, you can easily find taxis and buses to reach Girnar Parvat. Rajkot Airport, which is at a distance of approximately 100 km, has a better flight network that connects it with most Indian cities. Porbandar Airport is also at a similar distance. The nearest international airport is Ahmedabad Airport, which is at a distance of approximately 330 km and can be reached in about 6 hours. Tourists visiting from foreign countries are suggested to take a taxi to Girnar Parvat.

If you’re traveling by train, you need to deboard at Junagadh, which is the nearest railway station. The distance of Girnar from the railway station can be covered in just a few minutes. If you’re traveling by road, travel is convenient and there are a lot of transport options available. For people driving their own vehicles, the roads are well laid out, making the journey comfortable.

Right from the Dattatreya Temple at the peak of Girnar Parvat to other temples including Neminath Temple, Samprati Raja Temple, Ambika Mata Temple, Chaumukhji Temple, and several others, the Girnar Parvat is highly revered by devotees. However, there are many more reasons for people to visit the region. It is an opportunity for trekkers to experience an adrenaline rush. In addition to both these reasons, Girnar also provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. People who like to spend time on the mountains and look forward to connecting with nature visit here regularly. Most of the visitors, apart from pilgrims, are from Gujarat and Girnar Parvat is still unexplored by the majority of tourists. Overall, Girnar Temple gives an opportunity to learn about the rich culture of the area while you relax and enjoy nature. The trek is certainly a rejuvenating experience for any visitor, especially once one reaches the summit and witnesses the magnificent view.

Girnar had asked Lord Mahadev for a boon that there should be 33 crore divinities, siddhas, and saints on this mountain of mine. Lord Shankar fulfilled their wishes and gave them a boon.

The journey to the God Dattatreya Padukas is said to be made light by just two chants ‘Jai Girnari And ‘Digambara Digambara Sripada Vallabha Digambara…Digambara – meaning and spirit.

On this Girnar, lord Dattatreya performed penance for 12,000 years as per the orders of his parents. After this rigorous penance, at that place he became formless in shape, from emptiness or

nothingness. Dattatreya Dhuna ignites the fire by itself without the use of any external means (fuel, matchsticks, etc.), which is thrilling, surprising and expressive.

Girnar Hill

Girnar Hills, Gujarat

Junagadh is an ancient location in Gujarat associated with many legends of spiritual mysticism. It is home to the Girnar hills, a group of mountains, speculated to be existing even before the Himalayas and extremely revered and sacred for being home to many spiritual ascetics who have found enlightenment here. Hence it is famous for being an important pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Jains. Hence Girnar is also known as Girinagar, the city on the hills.

Interestingly while Girnar is one of the prescribed pilgrimage spots revered in Jainism, it is equally revered by Hindu ascetics of different sects who pledge their reverence to the Hindu deity Shiva. Such is the confluence of religious pilgrims and ascetics coming to pay their respects to Lord Shiva, Girnar is also home to the Maha Shiv Ratri fair which is held on the auspicious day dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. The Girnar hill is flocked equally by pilgrims of all religions including Hindus, Buddhists and Jains during the Girnar Parikrama festival which involves circumambulation of the base of the Girnar Hills for religious reasons.

For Jains, it is considered the spot of enlightenment and attainment of salvation during meditation for the last of the Jain Tirthankaras, ascetics responsible for the promulgation of the alternate sect of Jainism. For Hindus this spot is revered as the Lord Dattareya, the primordial saint or Yogi in a sect of Hinduism, where he is often said to be the teacher of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva. While in Nepal he is worshipped as a deity, in many parts of India he is worshipped as a syncretic deity that is an incarnation of the 3 main founding deities of Hinduism, Shiva Vishnu and Bramha. Lord Dattareya is said to be the founder of the Nath sect of Hinduism who are all followers of Lord Shiva whom they believe to be the first Nath.

As per Hindu mythology, Girnar Hills is said to be the place where Sri Krishna slayed mighty Yavana warrior Kalayavana. Notwthstandingly, the site is an important place of religious significance even for Buddhists. At a height of 3676 feet above the sea, and considered older than the Himalayas, Mount Girnar is home to various Jain temples and is one of the most astounding mountains capes of India. Further beyond the Jain temples at a height of 200 feet above, a rugged trekking route leads you to a spring of fresh water. At the summit is a shrine dedicated to Lord Dattareya and preserves his foot prints for paying respects. The place is revered by both Hindus and Jains alike.

During the pilgrimage of Girnar hills, The first temple of lord Neminath is situated on the 4,400 steps revered by Jains are both historical & architectural marvel and then Second Temple of Goddess Ambaji is situated on the 5,200 steps, and the Last and highest temple of Lord Dattatreya is situated on the 10,000 steps, which is popularly known as ‘Guru Shikhar’ or ‘Datta Shikhar, it is a major Hindu pilgrimage site atop of hill.

Other than a religious destination, the Girnar Mountain is also famous for its trekking destination. One of the most beautiful, difficult and adventurous treks, to reach top Girnar hill which is an 10,000 step stair travel from the hill below and takes about 5-6 hours to complete.

Places to visit in Junagadh – The Girnar

Gujarat is known for its business acumen and industrial houses. But in recent times campaigns like “Khushbu Gujarat ki” have put the state on the tourism map. Be it wildlife, religion, history or adventure, Gujarat has it all. And to be more specific, let me share a place that offers all four reasons to visit – The Mount Girnar. It is around 300 km from Ahmedabad and is located in the Junagarh district. The place is a historical one and is famous since the 3rd century. It is a religious place for Hindus and Jains. The mountain range is older than Himalaya and is considered to be a sacred place in India.

Ashoka’s Rock Edicts  – Mt. Girnar is home to fourteen of Ashoka’s Major Rock Edicts which are dated back to 250 BCE. The rocks have engravings that seem to be done from an iron pen in the Brahmi language. The historians marked it is as the beginning of the written history of Junagadh. The rock also has the inscriptions in Sanskrit added around 150 CE by Mahakshatrap Rudradaman I, the Saka (Scythian) ruler of Malwa. Those who love history, this place could be second to heaven for them.

Girnar Ropeway  – Gujarat is one state which is gifting Indians some new place to visit and enjoy. After the Statue of Liberty, it’s the Girnar Ropeway. The ropeway is about to launch somewhere between May and June 2020 as per the twitter handle of Udan Khatola, the company constructing this ropeway. The ropeway will connect the base to the Ambaji temple. As of now to climb to the temple, devotees need to take 5000 steps. The ropeway is going to be the most famous thing in Girnar apart from temples. Moreover, the ropeway project brings all-new excitement to the tourist visiting Junagadh. The nearby attraction Gir National Park is attracting many tourists, the ropeway would be a major attraction for them.

There is also a cafeteria being developed to serve tourists. The Girnar is getting a total facelift with the ropeway. If a few primary sources are to be believed, a souvenir shop is also lined up and will be ready by the launch of the ropeway.

Jain Temples –  There are 16 Jain temples built in the form of a fort on the ledge at the top of the great cliff. But these temples are 600 feet below the highest point of Girnar. The larger Jain temple is Neminath temple which was built around the years 1128 to 1159. The temple has the deity of Lord Neminath, which is made of black granite. The eyes of the deity are made of precious jewels. The ropeway is not taking the devotees straight up to the Neminath temple but surely provides some convenience to cover a certain distance.

Ambaji Temple – O ut of the 52 Shakti peethas, it is one of them. It is believed that the stomach of Devi had fallen here. The Girnar Ropeway will connect the temple directly to the base. Devotees need to put one step only in the ropeway in place of 5000 steps. The height of the temple is 3664 ft.

These are just four I have mentioned. To summarize, Girnar was always a major attraction for various reasons. And with the launch of the new ropeway, the place will see a revitalization of how people see the place. The ropeway is also set to attract tourists from all over India.

A Spiritual Adventure!

A sudden plan during my Junagadh trip led us to Taleti (at the base of Mt. Girnar) at around 11 pm. That's how we embarked our adventure to climb the highest mountain of Gujarat in a cold winter night.

Nikat and Shreyansh enjoying the mesmerizing sunrise from the top of Mt. Girnar.

Climbing + Night + Winter + Cold waves and Mt. GIRNAR. Now this was something I can call an Adventure!

Climbing almost 9000 plus steps in a winter night that too without any prior preparation wasn't that easy but when you have desire and passions for your goal every tasks turns easy for you.

Mt. Girnar at his full glory!

The highest point in Gujarat, Mt. Girnar has for centuries been one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the state and indeed in all of Western India, with 866 Hindu and Jain temples spread over the 5 summits. The base of the mountain, known as Girnar Taleti, is just 4 km east of the center of Junagadh. A hike up this mountain is best started early in the morning, with the mind of a pilgrim as the Girnar mountain climbing time is approximately four to five hours. Each step upward should itself encompass the entirety of the journey, rather than be seen as another effort towards one’s goal of reaching the top.

The steps begin at Domdar Kund, near the Damodar and Baldvji temples. The 15th-century poet Narsinh Mehta used to bathe here, and supposedly composed most of his morning hymns, the prabhatiya, here. As you ascend the stone path that connects the temples along the 5 summits, you will pass temples of many different sects of Hinduism on your Girnar Parvat Yatra. The Bhavnath temple, early on, is dedicated to Shiva, where the “naked sadhus” come to celebrate Shivaratri. After 4000 steps up, 800 steps before the first summit, you reach a plateau with a Jain temple complex. Among these Girnar Jain temples, which date from the 12th to 16th centuries, is the site where Neminath, the 22nd tirthankar of Jainism, died after 700 years of ascetic meditation. 2000 steps further on, the temple of Amba Mata (the Mother Goddess) is visited by Hindus, Jains, and newlyweds seeking blessings for a happy marriage. These last 2000 steps are intimidating but well worth the trip for the spectacular panoramic views from the summit. Then the stone trail continues, 1000 steps down and 1000 steps back up, to reach the other summits. The last of which houses a temple to Kalika, where the Aghora ascetics smear themselves with funeral ashes.

Though people will offer to carry you up the stairs (for a hefty price), the real experience of Girnar Parvat Yatra is to be found in walking. Pilgrimage is not about arriving, but about traveling. Start early in the morning, carry plenty of water, and stop for rest often during the hot hours of the day, and your climb of Mt. Girnar will be fruitful.

We were at Taleti around 12:30 am. We all were little tired. In that cold winter night hot Tea and Parle G was really helpfull. It was necessary for us to take some rest before we start climbing. We did not have any torch at that time and it was risky to climb alone in night. So we decided to wait for other people. Usually many groups come to Girnar for pilgrimage and start their journey in mid night or early morning. Waiting for someone to join we slept on a roadside bench. A nap of 1 hr ! That was enough for me. Finally, At 2:30 am we started climbing.

The cold winds were blowing continuously. The temperature was making it difficult for us.But after maintaining a steady pace very easily we reached to the highest point of Girnar, The Dattatrey Temple. We were lucky that we got chance to attend the 'Maha Aarti' inside the Girnar Parvat Datta Temple. A Maharastrian group joined us there which started some Aarti songs and the whole atmosphere was filled with some pure energy. It was a wonderful experience for all of us at the Girnar Parvat Datta Temple. It was around 6:00 am. We stayed near the Girnar temple as we wanted to enjoy the sun rise from the highest point of the mountain. We arranged woods for fire and sit there till the sun rise time. It was a very beautiful morning. We clicked some beautiful sunrise pictures. Later we had Prasad at an Aashram of a Babaji. I was really impressed by him and his followers who were serving Prasad to all very kindly. We visited few Girnar Jain temples before coming down.

Mt. Girnar at Dawn!

Photo of Mt. Girnar Night Trek - Story of a spiritual adventure! by Umang Dave (IG: @umangdavevisual)

The view from the mountain was amazing. The fresh air of morning, that sweet sounds of birds, Dhun and Aarti…It was splendid!!! We captured the beauty of Girnar on our camera and also our heart and eyes. We returned to Taleti easily before 9:30 am. Finally my dream of climbing Mt. Girnar was fulfilled.

It was like a test of passion, will power, physical as well as mental strength. I was happy that I did it very easily.

I would like suggest all adventure lovers, climb Girnar whenever you get chance. I bet it would be unforgettable and amazing experience you would ever have in your life.

“The Caged Magistrate” is one of several quests you receive from Captain Brant in the early stages of Dragon’s Dogma 2 . Brant tells you about one Magistrate Waldahr, someone who has stood his ground against Disa and refused to change the Code of Vermund to her benefit when asked, leading to him now sitting in a cell in Vernworth jail — ahem, gaol .

So Captain Brant has one very simple request of you: set Magistrate Waldahr free. He’ll give you a gaol key so you can let yourself into his cell, but you’ll find that Waldahr needs some convincing first.

In this Dragon’s Dogma 2 guide, we’ll walk through the entire “Caged Magistrate” quest, including where to find Magistrate Waldahr and how to set him free .

Where to find the Magistrate in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Vernworth map with the Vernworth Castle Gaol Tower and The Gracious Hand marked

Enter the palace grounds and head to the objective marked on your map. This is the entrance to Vernworth Castle Gaol Tower. Otto will greet you and allow you through, so make your way downstairs and aside from a couple of rooms to explore and loot, the main area here is the long corridor with pillars in the middle and cells on each side, for a grand total of eight.

A Dragon’s Dogma 2 hero talks to Magistrate Waldahr in “Caged Magistrate” quest.

Magistrate Waldahr is in the first cell on the right-hand side, as soon as you enter. Wait until the two guards are facing away from you then use the Gaol Key given to you by Captain Brant to unlock the cell.

Head in and talk to Waldahr, then when the option arises, urge him to escape. He explains that he’s perfectly happy in the cell because he can spend his days “perusing the Code and deciphering old texts.” However, if you can find “a place with a mountain of tomes,” Waldahr will reconsider escaping. Leave the gaol and return to Captain Brant.

Where to find ‘a place with a mountain of tomes’ in ‘The Caged Magistrate’

A Dragon’s Dogma 2 hero talks to the magistrate in jail in “The Caged Magistrate” quest.

Brant suggests talking to a chap named Kendrick, found by The Gracious Hand in the slums. He’s a balding chap wearing a blue robe, wandering around the tents and dilapidated houses on the outskirts of Vernworth. He’ll ask you for a charitable donation of gold, so pay up and he’ll explain a local boy named Malcolm has gone missing.

This starts an entirely separate quest named “The Heel of History,” where you must find Malcolm by speaking to the children of the slums. Look for a girl called Aimee who will be somewhere nearby and she’ll tell you Malcolm went into the vaults underneath the slums. Return to Kendrick and the pair of you will enter the vaults to find the runaway kid.

A Dragon’s Dogma 2 hero walks into a library underground in “The Caged Magistrate.”

Explore the vaults in their entirety and you’ll find Malcolm, followed by a huge underground library. Kendrick makes Malcolm promise to keep his mouth shut about the discovery, but you can return to Waldahr in the gaol and tell him about this wonderful place where he can study in peace. Escort Waldahr out of his cell and to the slums, then return to Captain Brant for your reward: 7,000 gold and a ferrystone .

Make sure you also return to Waldahr in the vaults a few days later, as he’ll have another quest for you: “A Magisterial Amenity,” which involves finding his confiscated spectacles.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 12:07 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed prior to the allision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.
