Breaking Bad Filming Locations

If you’ve ever wondered “Where was Breaking Bad filmed?” both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul have been filmed in just about every corner of Albuquerque, NM!

The series was originally going to be shot in Los Angeles, CA – but was later changed to New Mexico due to financial incentives to film there. Plus, one look at the Sandia Mountains and you have to imagine the creators behind the show instantly fell in love with the place.

Walter White House

The Breaking Bad house , aka Walter White house, is a must-see for those looking to get the full Breaking Bad experience. While the interior of the home was never used in the show, the exterior front and back were both featured in many episodes throughout the series.

Where Does Breaking Bad Take Place?

In its current form, the home bears a slightly different look than what was seen in the show. There is now a security gate around the entire residence as well as a sign asking visitors to take photos across the street from the home rather than directly in front.

The reason for the security addition was due to fans of the show actually recreating the infamous pizza scene by throwing entire pizzas onto the roof of the home like Walter White (yuck!). On busier days, the house may see up to 300 visitors coming to pose for photos.

Breaking Bad Filming Locations

Mrs. Padilla, the current owner, was given $400k for using her house for the series. She was later offered an additional $800k from someone looking to turn the home into a Breaking Bad Museum – an offer that she actually turned down.

Jesse Pinkman House

Located in an upscale Albuquerque neighborhood is the Jesse Pinkman house – this was where Walt and Jesse cooked while the residence was vacant and up for sale. It was originally owned by Jesse’s parents until Jesse purchased it himself.

Breaking Bad House

With the exception of more vines growing along the exterior walls of the 4,544 square foot, Spanish Colonial revival home, it hasn’t changed a bit since being featured on Breaking Bad. In its early appearances on the show, the exterior and interior were both used for the Jesse house until a replica of the interior was built on a soundstage.

While the show depicted Jesse throwing wild, drug-fueled parties at the home, that probably wouldn’t have flown with the neighborhood IRL. In reality, it’s actually a super quiet place where the most activity you may find is people jogging or taking a stroll with their furry friends.

A1A Car Wash

What was once Octopus Car Wash, aka A1A Car Wash in the show, is now part of the larger “Mister Car Wash” chains in New Mexico. The location was used for both interior and exterior shots in Breaking Bad and is easily a must for any Breaking Bad tour of Albuquerque.

Breaking Bad Filming Locations

One of the coolest parts about the Breaking Bad car wash is that you’re not limited to just snapping a few shots outside – you can actually go inside where the show was filmed!

Well, obviously not where the cars are being washed – but there is a section of the building you can walk through and find cool photos from the show, autographed Breaking Bad posters, and at the end of the hall there’s even a vending machine dedicated to Breaking Bad merch!

Los Pollos Hermanos

Is there really a more iconic filming location for both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul than Los Pollos Hermanos? One step inside the restaurant, which is actually part of the popular restaurant chain “Twisters” in real life, and you instantly recognize this as the site of Los Pollos Hermanos.

What to Do in Albuquerque

Filming was done both inside the building and outside – and that’s made evident by just how little the inside has been changed. You really feel like you’re having lunch at Los Pollos Hermanos when you eat at Twisters – except you won’t be able to get Gus’s chicken since it’s a Mexican restaurant (order the Twisters Burrito and I promise you won’t be disappointed!!)

This Twisters fully embraces its status as Gus Fring’s restaurant – having not only a massive Los Pollos Hermanos logo on the wall but also this awesome little shrine dedicated to photos from filming and autographs from your favorite Breaking Bad stars.

Breaking Bad Filming Locations

Tuco’s Headquarters

Tuco’s headquarters, aka Java Joe’s, is a popular coffee shop that’s been around for over 20 years and loved by many long before it made its television debut.

Breaking Bad Filming Locations

Thanks to Breaking Bad, however, the shop has had an influx of tourists visiting the location regularly to snap pictures at what is commonly recognized now as Tuco Salamanca’s former headquarters. Filming for the show was focused on the exterior of the building, but the explosion you see at the location was very real.

While it’s awesome that the production opted for realism here, it didn’t completely go off without a hitch. Remember the AC unit that flew off the building from the explosion? Yeah, that was 100% real and NOT supposed to happen.

Additionally, the explosion itself cracked the side of the building, leading to a hefty payout for the owner of the shop in order to make repairs.

The Crossroads Motel

Coined “The Crystal Palace” by DEA agent Hank Schrader in Breaking Bad, the Crossroads Motel is a real motel operating out of Albuquerque. The motel was used for exterior shots and is most notably remembered as being Wendy’s place of business.

Where Was Breaking Bad Filmed?

For those that don’t remember – Wendy, played by actress Julia Minesci, was a prostitute in the series. Julia, who is actually a local of Albuquerque, was completely transformed through makeup to play Wendy on the show. Her costume was apparently so convincing that she was propositioned by men several times while filming at the Crossroads Motel (yikes!).

The Abandoned Warehouse

The former site of Santa Fe Railway shops in Albuquerque, this location consists of 18 buildings created between 1915 and 1925. In the series, the rail yard was used as the location where drug dealers deposited payments for Gus Fring.

Things to Do in Albuquerque

In addition to Breaking Bad filming here, the rail yard has also reportedly been used for many films and series that shoot in Albuquerque.

The Dog House

The Dog House drive-in restaurant was used in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul several times throughout the filming of both series. In Breaking Bad, it was the spot where Jesse Pinkman sold drugs before he attempted to sell to Tuco.

Where Was Breaking Bad Filmed?

In Better Call Saul, it was the place where Saul started his cell phone selling side hustle. If you want to visit some seriously iconic locations during your Breaking Bad city tour, Dog House is a must – though you won’t find the picnic benches that were featured on the show since those were added exclusively for filming.

Saul Goodman Office Better Call Saul

Of course, we had to include some Better Call Saul filming locations, too! Day Spa & Nail, the location where Jimmy McGill maintains a closet-sized office space in the back, is actually a real nail salon and spa – and the sign featured on the outside is actually for the real business (minus the phone number).

Better Call Saul Office

The series also did use the interior of the real salon for filming, and even now the place looks almost exactly like what you see on the show. So, if you want to visit a cool Better Call Saul location AND get that Mani-Pedi you’ve been wanting – this is the place for you!

Chuck House Better Call Saul

Though filming at Chuck’s house in Better Call Saul was focused on the exterior, it’s definitely still worth a visit during your film location tour.

Better Call Saul Filming Locations

The gorgeous 3,428 square foot home acted as the residence of Chuck McGill, Jimmy’s brother, in Better Call Saul. The exterior still looks exactly like it did on the show, but don’t expect to find the mailbox where Chuck’s guests were forced to hide their electronics – that was added for the series!

The Candy Lady

The Candy Lady shop was never used in the series, but it’s an absolute must-stop for fans of Breaking Bad and especially those with a sweet tooth!

What to Do in Albuquerque

In addition to all the other tasty goodies The Candy Lady offers, they also have some Breaking Bad-themed “Blue Sky” sugar candy that’s delicious! (And only mildly addictive). Fans of the show can also have a photograph of themselves standing in front of a massive tub of the blue candy as a souvenir.

The Breaking Bad Store

If you want to pick up some sweet Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul merch during your trip, there’s no better place than The Breaking Bad Store. Here, you’ll find everything from mugs and figurines, to T-shirts and even a Breaking Bad Monopoly game!

Once you’re done spending some of that vacation money on cool souvenirs, you can also pop into the store’s mini museum. Pose for photos at the replica of Saul Goodman’s office or check out the real Breaking Bad costumes on display – there’s so much to see here!

What to Do in Albuquerque

Breaking Bad RV Tour

Being a resident of New Mexico and a major fan of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, I’ve actually experienced a Breaking Bad RV Tour firsthand. The guided tour was cool and our tour guides had great enthusiasm for what they did and for the show, but my husband and I both agreed it wasn’t really how we wanted to experience a tour.

The seating was pretty cramped and the bus itself was hot (no matter how often the guide tried to cool it down for everyone). Additionally, there were a lot of locations the bus couldn’t visit because of time constraints and just the sheer size of the vehicle itself.

Breaking Bad Self Guided Tour

When I was given the opportunity to take the self-guided tour, I had an absolute blast! My husband and I started the tour at the time we wanted, stops were taken when WE needed them, and we got to see way more locations than literally any guided tour offers.

It was so much fun pulling up to a location on the tour and trying to see who could spot the filming site first. The self-guided Breaking Bad tour Albuquerque was honestly the most fun we’d had during our entire trip. If you’re looking for a true tour of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad sites Albuquerque – the Velvet Ropes self-guided tour is where it’s at!

From the opening scene of Breaking Bad, viewers have been hooked on the misadventures of Walter White and his family. Breaking Bad tours have become an increasingly popular way to explore the sights of the Albuquerque we have come to know and love through the lens of the show’s creators. Almost a character in itself, many parts of the fascinating city are now familiar to tens of millions of people who have never even set foot there. A Breaking Bad tour of Albuquerque, particularly one that takes place in an RV, is a great way to visit the many locations used for memorable scenes throughout the series. Here are three of the best.

Albuquerque New Mexico

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Legacy lives on in New Mexico from Georgia O' Keeffe's magnificent paintings, to the continued celebrations of NAVAJO and APACHE Culture.

I share with my clients something very interesting about Indians in the state of NM, that no one, no one knows. You can't even Google it! Because I used to live with them on the reservation, so this is something extra! Extra bonus for my clients.

LAND of ENCHANTMENT, they call it!

White Sand National Park, Carlsbad Caverns, Sangre de Cristo Mountains...

There is a larger than Life Feel to New Mexico's Great Outdoors, as if it was dreamt up by a Hollywood Production Designer.

SANTA FE The oldest Capitol in United States. ALBUQUERQUE The capital in the World for Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, as well as The "ONE WHO KNOCKS" THE BREAKING BAD Series put ALBUQUERQUE and the State of NM in the Global Spotlight with its massive success; Direct Spend $200 million, but it's ancillary impact is far greater than that!!

Like Mr. Bryant Cranston - Heisenberg once said: "I can't imagine to film Breaking Bad series somewhere else than in New Mexico."  "You saw Los Angeles, You saw New York City, You saw Miami, but You never been in New Mexico..."

Breaking Bad Film Locations – A Self Guided Tour

breaking bad tour albuquerque

Breaking Bad is one of my all time favorite shows. The concept of a struggling high school chemistry teacher who gets terminal cancer and decides to use his knowledge to make crystal meth to financially provide for his family before he dies was such an amazing plot. I have watched the entire series three times all the way through and will still play an episode or two if I can’t find anything else on Netflix. Almost all of the show was filmed in or around Albuquerque, New Mexico. So last year, when I had a long layover in ABQ, I decided to rent a car and see some of the Breaking Bad Film Locations and famous sights from the show.

There are tours that you can book online, such as the “Breaking Bad RV Tour” but it’s pretty easy to just see these sights yourself. Plus, the other tours don’t make it out to To’hajiilee, which was probably my favorite spot. Most of these locations can be found by simply plugging the address into your phone. Enjoy!

– Be sure to check out my YouTube video below this post. Lots of great drone footage over To’hajiilee –

Walter White’s House

Breaking Bad Film Locations

3828 Piermont Dr. Albuquerque, NM 87111

The house of “Heisenberg” himself is located in a typical Albuquerque suburb with not much traffic. However, during the filming and after the show, it became a hotspot for tourists and Breaking Bad hardcores who kept reliving one scene over and over again: the one where Walter throws a pizza on his roof. It became such a problem that director, Vince Gilligan had to beg them to stop in 2015. This eventually led to the owner putting up a six foot high – iron fence around the property. It’s definitely one of the most visited Breaking Bad film locations.

Saul Goodman’s Office

Breaking Bad Film Locations

9800 Montgomery Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111

Located in a strip mall just a five minute drive from the White’s residence is the Office of Saul Goodman. This is where he conducted most of his business. The space is currently occupied in real life by Duke City Sports Bar.

A1A Car Wash

Breaking Bad Film Locations

9516 Snow Heights Cir. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87112

This is the car wash where Walt worked part time while teaching in the beginning of the show. Once his meth business took off and the money starting pouring in, he and Skyler decided to purchase it as a means of laundering his money. “Have an A1 Day!”

Hank and Marie’s House

breaking bad tour albuquerque

4901 Cumbre Del Sur Ct NE Albuquerque, NM 87111

Hank and Marie’s pueblo-style abode is located in an expensive and elevated neighborhood sitting at the end of a cul de sac. The back porch overlooks the Sandia Mountains.

Tuco’s Headquarters

breaking bad tour albuquerque

906 Park Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102

A set of rooms sitting above a cantina, this is where Tuco Salamanca and his crew often hung out. In real life, the location is a cafe called Java Joe’s.

breaking bad tour albuquerque

1216 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque, NM 87121

Dog house was the drive-in restaurant where Jesse would sell his product before going into business with Walt. It’s also where I decided to grab a bite for lunch. The hot dog was very tasty!

Jesse Pinkman’s House

Breaking Bad Film Locations

322 16th St SW, Albuquerque, NM 87104

Jesse’s house is located in a very beautiful, quiet suburb with lots of trees. It’s where he spent most of his time outside of work and also hosted some pretty crazy parties.

The Laundry (Superlab)

Breaking Bad Film Locations

1617 Candelaria Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107

The Superlab was a large-scale laboratory that was located under an industrial laundry business financed by Gustavo Fring. It was constructed for the sole purpose of manufacturing industrial amounts of illicit methamphetamine and thus played a vital role in the expansion of Gus’s drug empire.

Los Pollos Hermanos

Breaking Bad Film Locations

4257 Isleta Boulevard Southwest, Albuquerque, NM 87105

Los Pollos Hermanos was a fast-food chain that specialized in fried chicken. It was used as a cover up for Gustavo Fring’s drug operation. This is probably the most popular of all the Breaking Bad film locations. The real restaurant is called Twisters and they serve a variety of burgers, burritos, and chicken. They have lots of great memorabilia on the walls and I really wanted to go inside, but dining in was closed due to COVID. So, I had to settle for the drive through window to grab my dinner.

To’hajiilee

Breaking Bad Film Locations

To’hajiilee is a section of the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico. It’s about a 40 minute drive west of Albuquerque off of Interstate 40 and was the site of Walt and Jesse’s first cooking session. It’s also the place where Walt buried his money and the location of the intense shootout that took place at the end of Season 5. This was my favorite spot of the tour. I woke up early in the morning to drive out there and it was so worth it. The whole area has beautiful scenery and I was the only one around. It can be a little difficult to find the exact location. Take I-40 West to Canoncita School Rd North, then get off on Tribal Rd 7089 and be on the lookout for the unique rock formation as seen in the photos.

Breaking Bad Film Locations

I had read that if you search this area closely, you might be able to find gun shells from the blanks that were fired during the shootout. I was lucky enough to find one from Hank’s 9mm. What an awesome souvenir!

Breaking Bad Film Locations

The Candy Lady

breaking bad tour albuquerque

424 San Felipe St NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104

To wrap up your tour, be sure to swing by The Candy Lady’s shop in Old Town Albuquerque to pick up some of Walt’s famous product. Just kidding, it’s actually rock candy that she made for the show as a prop, but now sells to the public.

' src=

I visited many of the Breaking Bad locations. While metal detecting behind the shootout rock, I dug up a jar with 3 $1 bills (each with a Heisenberg quote written on it) and 2 quarters dated 2008, the year the show was released. Thanks for helping make my vacation from PA so memorable. Rick Reinhardt

' src=

Hi Rick, That’s so Awesome!!! I’m glad you were able to find the shootout location. It is kinda hidden.

' src=

Hello Robert, I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of days in ABQ last weekend and rented a car to visit all the locations you list here. And a few extra – Rio Rancho High School, John B Robert Dam and Aldo’s NY pizza. Great job – thank you for doing all the hard work for me. Debbie

Hi Debbie, That’s great 🙂 I’m glad to have helped. It sounds like you had the ultimate tour!

' src=

Thanks for sharing this!

' src=

Thank you so much for this 🙂 We are heading over in August 2024 and the RV tours have shut down so I was pleased to see this. Thanks for the hard work

How to Take a Self-Guided Breaking Bad Tour in Albuquerque

Interested in a self-guided Breaking Bad on your next trip to Albuquerque , New Mexico? I’ve got you covered, complete with tips on what to be aware of as you explore all of Walter White’s old haunts.

I had every intention of booking a guided Breaking Bad tour on our most recent visit to Albuquerque. That’s until I found out that prices for those tours had gone up quite a bit just months prior.

A little internet sleuthing uncovered that a Breaking Bad self-guided tour was pretty dang easy to pull off.

Is there Breaking Bad stuff in Albuquerque? There is quite a bit of Breaking Bad stuff in Albuquerque. The show was filmed all over the city at real locations you can visit (or see from the comfort of your own car) today.

Come along on the journey whether you’re curious about the show’s connection to Albuquerque or want to pull this off yourself on your next trip to this quirky city.

I’ll include real-life filming locations from Better Call Saul , too, in as efficient a way as possible.

Where was Breaking Bad set?

Breaking Bad was set in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This wasn’t just the imaginary setting for the show, either. There are film locations all over Albuquerque that served as the perfect backdrop for this tale of a chemistry teacher gone bad.

Albuquerque was so inspiring to Vince Gilligan that he kept the town as a main player for Better Call Saul and El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie .

Quick Tips for a Self-Guided Breaking Bad Tour

Before I share all of the top Breaking Bad locations in town, including my Breaking Bad map in Albuquerque, there are a few things to keep in mind as you plan your self-guided tour. Let’s get that out of the way first:

  • You’ll need a car to make this Breaking Bad Albuquerque tour happen. Albuquerque has quite a bit of sprawl going on, so you can’t just walk from spot to spot, particularly as you get from Northeast Heights to downtown Albuquerque.
  • If you’re not already on a New Mexico road trip, book a rental car ahead of time using a site like Hotwire or Priceline .
  • Albuquerque sits at over 5,300 feet of elevation. If you’re hitting some of the downtown locations on a walking tour, don’t push yourself too hard if you’re not yet used to getting all touristy at those heights.
  • Many of the Breaking Bad Albuquerque locations I’ll highlight here are private residences. Be respectful. Don’t give fans of the show a bad name by ringing doorbells and asking about buried cash.
  • That said, don’t engage with neighbors who don’t love the attention they’ve received for being featured in the show. You’ll see what I mean when I get to Walt’s place.

GIMME MY BREAKING BAD TOUR ALBUQUERQUE MAP!

Breaking bad sites in albuquerque.

Let’s get into why you’re here. I’ll have each filming location listed as how it was presented in the show. If it’s a business still operating today, I’ll include that information in parenthesis so you know what to look for as you ride around on a Breaking Bad driving tour.

Start your self-guided Breaking Bad tour in the Northeast Heights neighborhood of Albuquerque, especially if you’re short on time. This is where the biggies are.

Walter White’s House

3828 Piermont Dr. NE, Albuquerque, NM

Walter White’s house on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

Walter and Skyler shared domestic bliss at this address in Northeast Heights.

The house today is just as dramatic. The owners are often found waiting outside for passersby, waiting to cuss them out. (There are all kinds of fun videos depicting interactions at the house, but as there’s some spicy, at times racist language involved, I won’t link to it here.)

Here’s the deal. This is a private residence. Don’t throw pizzas onto the roof in honor of Walt, and don’t engage with the cranky owners, particularly the woman described above.

It sounds like she was psyched about her home’s appearance in a groundbreaking television series until she realized it would lead to fan involvement. Now she’s not so psyched.

During our own visit, she was waiting outside in the driveway with her phone out, filming any cars that passed. We were one of two cars at that time who never even parked to stop because of her presence, despite signage asking fans to take photos across the street.

I’m not sure what she does with all of that hot footage she films all day, but no pizzas made it onto her roof during our visit.

Do a quick driveby of this one and don’t be an ass, please. You’ll know you’re at the right place when you see the gate, cones, signage, and cranky homeowner.

They are not here to play, so if you’re on foot, take a quick photo from the other side of the street, which is public property, and move it along.

If you’re visiting with minors, do be warned that expletives are the norm. I wouldn’t call this stop family-friendly by any means, but if your littles were watching Breaking Bad , that’s another conversation altogether.

Saul Goodman’s Office (The Bourbon House)

9800 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM

Saul Goodman’s Office on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

Imagine a Statue of Liberty waving in all its glory above what is now The Bourbon House. This is where Saul Goodman operated after upgrading from his shop inside a nail salon.

Ignore what other blogs say about this being a Dukes City Sports Bar. That is now closed.

Savoy Bar & Grill

10601 Montgomery Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM

The Savoy Bar & Grill is the restaurant where Walter meets his former flame Gretchen Schwartz in Season 2. If you want to pop in, the bistro has an excellent wine menu and petite pizzas of the day on its happy hour menu.

Hank and Marie’s House

4901 Cumbre del Sur Court NE, Albuquerque, NM

Hank and Marie's House on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

This is as fancy as it’s going to get on this Albuquerque Breaking Bad tour. Enjoy the views of the Sandia Mountains while you’re here taking a quick snap of Hank and Marie’s house. We did a little Googling of house prices in the area while we were here and they’re way out of budget.

That means don’t linger here is all I’m saying.

A1A Car Wash (Mister Car Wash)

9516 Snow Heights Circle NE, Albuquerque, NM

The A1A Car Wash on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

If your car is a little dusty from your touristing, give it a wash at what was Walter and Skyler’s car wash, the A1A Car Wash. It’s a Mister Car Wash today, and they offer interior and exterior detailing, too, if you want to get fancy. Support local businesses, friends!

La Palomita Park

8516 La Sala Grande NE, Albuquerque, NM

This was the park where Mike would take his granddaughter Kaylee for some much-needed outdoor fun. It doesn’t play a big part in the show, but it’s a nice break in the day from some of the less picturesque spots along the way.

Los Pollos Hermanos (Twisters)

4275 Isleta Blvd. SW, Albuquerque, NM

A woman stands in front of the sign at Los Pollos Hermanos on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour.

Head to this Twisters location in the South Valley for burritos and New Mexican fast food, not chicken. Enjoy a modest display of autographs from the filming of quite a few Breaking Bad scenes here.

Note: I’ve seen some bloggers list the Central Avenue location as the filming site, but that’s incorrect. Maybe they didn’t take a self-guided Breaking Bad tour themselves. You can make your own conclusions here.

The food itself is just fine and service is a little slow. Did that burrito hit a little different knowing about everything that went down here? It sure did.

Serenity (Isleta Hotel and Casino)

11000 Broadway Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM

This filming site at the Isleta Hotel and Casino is off-the-beaten-path compared to the other locations on the list, but I’m including it here for the diehards.

The resort property you see there today served in a few different capacities on the show. It was both Serenity, Jesse’s rehab facility, and where Walt and his family moved when their house burned down in Season 5. I guess once you scout out a good location, you stick with it.

The Car Fire Parking Lot (Isleta Amphitheater)

5601 University Blvd. SE, Albuquerque, NM

I skipped out on this one as I really wanted to get downtown, but if you’d like to reenact scenes of Walter watching his car burn in a parking lot, head to the Isleta Amphitheater. Just don’t set anything on fire, please. It was all just a show.

This is also where Walt taught Junior how to drive back in Season 2. Ah, memories.

Avoid this one during event days as it will be packed not with Breaking Bad fans, but people going to those events.

Jesse & Jane’s Apartment

323 Terrace St. SE, Albuquerque, NM

Jesse and Jane's duplex on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

You’ll head toward downtown Albuquerque next for this cluster of Breaking Bad locations. You can do some walking here or rent a bike for your fitness. I was still in the car for all of these but did have to navigate some downtown parking woes at the busier stops.

For your first stop in the area, look for a home with colorful steps and blue trim on the corner of a busy street. This is the apartment complex that fell into disrepair as Jesse and Jane fell into deeper and darker drug abuse.

Give this one a quick look before continuing on, as there aren’t many spots to stop and it’s private property.

The Crystal Palace (Crossroads Motel)

1001 Central Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM

The Crystal Palace on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

The Crossroads Motel served as a film site across several episodes as the Crystal Palace. Back in Season 1, this is where Hank took Junior to meet Wendy, a meth addict and prostitute, and scare him straight.

As there weren’t any cars in the lot I’m going to assume this isn’t somewhere to rest your head while on a road trip through Albuquerque Breaking Bad sites.

Here’s a review:

“People who rent here aren’t allowed to have any kind of visitors, not even your own mother.”

Apparently, the woman at the front desk can be a little cranky, so if you’re not here for a room, keep moving it along after your look.

The Grove Cafe & Market

600 Central Ave. SE, Suite A, Albuquerque, NM

The Grove, a restaurant you can visit on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

This popular brunch spot is where Lydia Fraser often met Walter and sipped on chamomile.

I had a belly full of burrito that prevented me from partaking in brunch or lunch at The Grove Cafe & Market , but their focus on fresh, organic ingredients does sound delicious. The lot here was busy when I popped by, so it’s definitely a bustling place.

Mike Ehrmantraut’s House

204 Edith Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM

Mike's house on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

This modest home in a residential neighborhood is more prominently featured in Better Call Saul , but I’ll include it here as its first appearance was in the original. Take a quick look and move it along, as this is a private residence.

Fring’s Drug Dropoff  (Albuquerque Rail Yards)

1100 2nd St. SW, Albuquerque, NM

Fring’s drug dropoff on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

The Albuquerque Rail Yards are apparently undergoing some revitalization as we speak, but on my visit, it was still a pretty perfect location to stand in as Gus Fring’s drug dropoff. It was all abandoned warehouses, broken-out windows, and graffiti .

Apparently, there’s a Wheels Museum here that gives the history of the historic Santa Fe Railroad Shops that once sat here, so maybe it’ll feel less sketchy on a repeat visit.

Tuco’s Headquarters (Java Joe’s)

906 Park Ave. SW, Albuquerque, NM

Java Joe’s, or Tuco's Headquarters, on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

Tuco Salamanca’s headquarters actually operated out of a Java Joe’s, and their green tea latte is not a mistake if you need a little pick-me-up for the rest of your adventuring. You’ll find some Breaking Bad -related merchandise inside which I definitely support.

Dog House Drive In

1216 Central Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM

A hot dog stand on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

This hot dog stand is featured in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul . Its first appearance was in the very first season of the original when Jesse tried to sell meth here.

It’s just a hot dog stand today, and a busy one at that. The hot dogs are just fine. ( I’m from Chicago , so the bar is high.) The chili dogs are likely better if reviews are to be believed, but I didn’t want to make a mess of myself as I navigated many of these spots solo.

Jesse Pinkman’s House

322 16th St. SW, Albuquerque, NM

Jesse Pinkman's house on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

Before Jesse moved into the duplex near Jane, he lived in this home owned by his parents. This was the site of that one scene with the hydrofluoric acid in the bathtub. You know the one. Try to forget about all of that with a stroll around the beautiful neighborhood once you’re done.

The Superlab (Delta Uniform & Linens)

1617 Candelaria Road NE, Albuquerque, NM

The location of the Superlab on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

It may look like a commercial laundromat, but that goes to show that you just don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. OK, so there’s no giant meth lab at this location, but this is the filming location for the Superlab, the show’s large-scale meth operation.

I’d recommend snapping a pic when it’s closed so you don’t look like a complete weirdo…unless you actually have some dry cleaning to do.

Loyola’s Family Restaurant

4500 Central Ave. SE, Albuquerque, NM

This casual New Mexican eatery is seen throughout both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul . It was host to strategy sessions between Mike and Jesse and then as a favorite haunt of Mike in the spinoff.

I didn’t eat at this one, but it has a storied history as a filming location in these parts. The restaurant was also featured in the movie In Plain Sight and the TV show Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles .  Did you miss those, too?

Casa Tranquila (Fiesta Park Wellness and Rehabilitation)

8820 Horizon Blvd., Albuquerque, NM

This real nursing home played the role of the assisted living facility where Hector Salamanca spent his bell-ringing days. It was also the location of the bombing that killed Gus Fring. I assume you know how to behave at real nursing homes. Don’t be weird and try to go inside.

Fun fact: You’ll be super close to The Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum from here. It’s a mouthful of a place, but it’s also one of the best museums in Albuquerque whether you’re into ballooning or not. You will learn A LOT!

Walt’s Buried Money (To’hajilee Indian Reservation)

35°06’07.1″N, 107°08’14.0″W

The To'Hajilee Indian Reservation on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

This is one of the most important sites in the show. It’s where Walter buries his money and the site of his first cooking session with Jesse in the pilot. It’s a hike from Albuquerque and not recommended if you don’t have a high-clearance vehicle.

We took the drive out just to see if we could. While the scenery is spectacular, this is Navajo land. Be respectful when you’re out here. Don’t dig holes looking for cash. You won’t find any…at least not from the show.

The coordinates here will take you to the approximate location of scenes filmed in the area. Again, don’t come out here all unprepared. You’re in the desert . Bring lots of water, don’t park in the middle of the road no matter how desolate it feels, and leave no trace.

Things You WON’T See on Breaking Bad Tours

I read through loads of guides that haven’t been updated in a while to make my own list of highlights on this Breaking Bad locations tour. I don’t want you to have to feel all disappointed because you’re looking for places that don’t exist anywhere.

Here are a few locations that you won’t see on your Breaking Bad self-guided tour:

  • Venezia’s Pizzeria, the pizza shop featured throughout the show that supplied the pie that ended up on Walter’s roof, has been renamed to Gino’s New York Style Pizza . The original owner retired, so I can’t vouch for the new business and its authenticity.
  • Zen Nail Spa, the real spa where Saul would get his pedicures, is permanently closed. This one is a bummer because some of the nail techs who worked here were extras in the show and loved talking about it during spa treatments.
  • Something must be going around in the nail salons in this town because the Day Spa & Nail that served as Jimmy McGill’s first office is also permanently closed.
  • The scene filmed at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History was at the museum’s temporary location. The museum you can visit today is great and worth a trip anyway, but it didn’t appear in the show.
  • Paul’s Monterey Inn, a bar and grill where Jesse and Walt met to talk about killing “bad” guys, is unfortunately permanently closed.
  • Garduno’s of Mexico on Louisiana Boulevard is permanently closed. This is where Walt, Skyler, Marie, and Hank all meet in the last season.
  • The Gertrude Zachary Jewelry location where Marie shoplifts a tiara is now permanently closed. There’s another one on Lomas Boulevard, but it’s not the same shop.
  • If you want a cinnamon roll from the Cinnabon Saul Goodman worked at in Better Call Saul , you’re out of luck. While Cottonwood Mall is still very much a thing, the Cinnabon location within the mall is closed.

Bonus Better Call Saul Filming Locations

Whether you loved Saul Goodman or loved to hate him, you can’t deny the awesomeness that was Better Call Saul .

You’ll be happy to know that Albuquerque shares the love for Kim Wexler, by the way.

Kim Wexler's car on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

Let’s take a look at a few more stops to make while you’re in town for a Better Call Saul self-guided tour. Note that many of the locations from Breaking Bad overlap with the spinoff, but if you’ve been following along you know that already!

Chuck’s House

1607 San Cristobal Road SW, Albuquerque, NM

Chuck's house on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

In the fictional world, Chuck McGill lived just around the corner from Jesse Pinkman’s parents. If you’re looking at filming locations for both shows, you can easily tack on a quick look at this one if you’re already in the tree-lined neighborhood.

As with any other private residence on this list, keep it moving once you take a glance.

HHM (Regus/Pan American Building)

100 Sun Plaza NE #650, Albuquerque, NM

HHM on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

You should recognize the large purple building from the show that served as Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill, or HHM. I wouldn’t go inside unless you want weird encounters with security, as it’s just a regular office in real life.

Fun fact: Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad and its spinoffs, used loads of color symbolism throughout the show. If you watch it back, you’ll notice Marie Schrader’s love for purple. That was meant to symbolize the usual purple traits like pride and loyalty, but also self-deception. Purple is also opposite yellow on the color wheel, a color most often associated with the meth trade on the show.

Mesa Verde Bank & Trust (One Executive Center)

8500 Menaul Blvd. NE # A125, Albuquerque, NM

The financial institution that hires Kim Wexler and causes many of the headaches that aren’t related to Saul is in a nondescript office building off Menaul Boulevard. In my research on this one, I came upon a website looking for victims of the company, so Saul’s shenanigans live on.

More Breaking Bad Sites to Visit in Albuquerque

The attractions below are more Breaking Bad -adjacent, as in they’ve capitalized on the show’s success to get their own things going. I support it. To be honest, I’m shocked the woman who lives in Walter White’s house won’t do the same.

Here are a few fun spots that embrace the Breaking Bad fandom to round out your experience.

The Candy Lady

424 San Felipe St. NW, Albuquerque, NM

A man holds a bag of rock candy on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour.

Head to Old Town Albuquerque for the next two stops and feel free to linger a while. This is one of the best areas of the city for quirky shops, eateries, and historical cache.

Once you’re at the candy shop, revel in all of the Breaking Bad wonders. If you ask nicely, an old lady will sell you dime bags of the blue stuff for just a dollar. I’m sure she’d do it even if you didn’t ask nicely, but it’s always best to be polite.

This candy shop has made a name for itself selling its version of Blue Sky — it’s pure sugar, so stop freaking out — but don’t leave without hitting the chocolate counter. While the kitsch is in the little baggies, the other treats are much tastier.

The Breaking Bad Store ABQ

2047 S. Plaza St. NW, Albuquerque, NM

A woman works the counter at The Breaking Bad Store ABQ on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour.

This is so much more than a gift shop selling cheesy merchandise in Old Town. I mean, there’s a lot of that. If you keep on walking toward the back of the shop, though, you’ll find an entire exhibit dedicated to the show and its spinoffs.

There are a few photo opportunities for you inside if you want to get into character, or just revel in all of the memorabilia in here. I’m going to go ahead and call this one a must on any self-guided Breaking Bad tour Albuquerque has to offer.

Marble Brewery

9904 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM

Two pours of beer at Marble Brewery on a self-guided Breaking Bad tour

The Northeast Heights location of Marble Brewery was a popular spot for Bryan Cranston and the rest of the crew during filming, so we obviously had to indulge in a pint or a few while we were here.

They do flights or full pours of a rotating draft list. Their Lab-Spresso, an imperial stout with some lactose thrown in for good measure, was the most interesting pour we sampled. It’s served on nitro, which means a layer of delicious foam and a thicker texture as you sip.

Rebel Donut

9311 Coors Blvd. NW, Albuquerque, NM

I love donuts, but Rebel Donut was temporarily closed during our week in Albuquerque. We would have loved to visit for a taste of their version of Blue Sky. It’s a Breaking Bad -inspired vanilla cake donut with blue cotton candy icing and rock candy. (edit: sadly Rebel Donut closed its doors for good in June of 2023 so unless it is reopened at a future date, you can no longer have rock candy donuts at this location)

Vernon’s Speakeasy

6855 4th St. NW, Albuquerque, NM

I didn’t learn about this one until after we left and do feel some FOMO over it. If you’re in the mood for steaks and cocktails, you can pay your respects to Walter White at this place.

In 2013, fans held a mock funeral for the meth cook complete with a temporary headstone at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. That didn’t jive with people who were mourning actual loved ones, so the thing was moved here.

Why a speakeasy? One of the funeral organizers owns the place.

Guided Tour Options

If all of this feels overwhelming and you don’t mind putting down some cash for a guided Breaking Bad tour, the most highly-rated option is Breaking Bad RV Tours .

I can’t vouch for the experience as I did it all self-guided, obviously, but the Breaking Bad tour reviews on this one are pretty good. The only bummer I saw for some fans who booked was that the RV isn’t always available.

I’d imagine that’s a big draw for anyone booking a Breaking Bad tour in Albuquerque with them as it’s in the name of their company, so do ask questions if this is a big deal for you. You can book Breaking Bad tickets for tours online ahead of time.

Note: On busy days, you will be in an RV full of other fans. This sounds very fun for some, but may make others uncomfortable when you consider that some of the private residences described in this guide don’t love the attention.

Breaking Bad Sites FAQs

Was breaking bad filmed in utah.

Breaking Bad was not filmed in Utah. It was filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after initial talks had the show in Los Angeles. Tax rebates and general New Mexico vibes won out in the end to bring Breaking Bad to New Mexico.

Where is the real Breaking Bad RV?

The real Breaking Bad RV is in Culver City. You can see it on a Sony Pictures Studio Tour. No, you can’t ride in it.

Is there a Breaking Bad museum?

There is no official Breaking Bad museum in Albuquerque, but The Breaking Bad Store ABQ gets pretty close. They have more signed memorabilia and artifacts from the show than anywhere else, and it’s all free to see.

Can you go inside the Breaking Bad house?

No, you cannot go inside the Breaking Bad house if what you’re talking about is Walter White’s home on your Breaking Bad tour map. This is a private residence and you’d be trespassing if you did so.

Where can I watch Breaking Bad ?

You can watch Breaking Bad and its spinoffs on Netflix.

If it’s been a while, you can always rewatch the show on the platform. I know a self-guided Breaking Bad tour made me want to revisit the show to catch things I missed the first time around.

Where to Stay in Albuquerque

We love this property in Nob Hill for our stays in Albuquerque. It’s our favorite neighborhood in the city by far, and it’s pet-friendly. Our dog loved that, for sure.

If you’d like comparison-shop, check out the map below:

Is there tourism in Albuquerque after Breaking Bad ?

There is definitely tourism in Albuquerque after Breaking Bad . For us, the TV show connections were just icing as far as reasons to spend some time in the quirky city.

If you want to relive either show (or even the Netflix movie) while you’re here, you can certainly do that with this guide to Breaking Bad tour locations.

1 thought on “How to Take a Self-Guided Breaking Bad Tour in Albuquerque”

I just watched Breaking Bad (I know, I am very late to the game), and I loved it. I scrolled through to see if you made it to Walters’s house and if the homeowner was outside, and what your experience was with her. I wonder if there is ever a time she isn’t standing outside with her phone out?

“Albuquerque itself has become a character in our show. A really important character in our show. It gave it a justifiable location. A sound, solid place that not many people have related to. They’ve seen Los Angeles, they’ve seen New York, but they haven’t really seen Albuquerque and New Mexico.”  - Bryan Cranston, Walter White on "Breaking Bad"

What the Actors Say about Albuquerque

Q: "Breaking Bad" was originally planned to be set in California, but was moved to Albuquerque. What has Albuquerque been for the show?

A: "Albuquerque has meant the world for 'Breaking Bad.' I can’t imagine 'Breaking Bad' being anywhere else. I can’t imagine the show would be nearly as interesting as it is if it were set anywhere else. Just the cinematography and the look of the show. When I think of Albuquerque, I think of clouds, just those beautiful floating cumulus clouds. The skies. These are skies you just don’t see in Southern California. You really get the depth and the sense of scale in the desert in Albuquerque. On days when I’m out there on the set, the first thing I do is look out the window. If it’s a day with no clouds, I get really upset! I think about the Sandias and about this great city that I’ve grown to love." - Vince Gilligan, creator of "Breaking Bad," in an interview with Local IQ

Q: Is there any part of New Mexico that you will miss when filming wraps up?

A: "There are a lot of parts of New Mexico that I'm going to miss. I fell in love with that city during the first season and fell in love with the entire state in the seasons after that. I own a place there and I'm going to keep it, so I'll go back." - Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman), on an interview with AMC

Q: Do you plan to maintain a residence in Albuquerque after the show wraps? What's your favorite Albuquerque restaurant?

A: “I do. I own a house there and greatly enjoy my time there. I may be able to come back and visit and also work some more in Albuquerque. I've developed a lot of friendships and places I like to go, so it's been great for me. In terms of restaurant, I think for dinner I enjoy going out to  El Pinto  because of the food and the guys who own the restaurant and the general manager. I enjoy the atmosphere, the food and the drinks and it's pretty festive. And as a great standby, you can't beat Flying Star.” - Bryan Cranston (Walter White), on an interview with AMC

“There’s something very wonderful to be surrounded by the mountains and good air [in Albuquerque]. It’s a wonderful place to work and it feels like home." - Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring), in the  Albuquerque Journal
