Amsterdam mini cruise: what happens and is it worth it? our review
An Amsterdam mini cruise is a really popular way to see the European city from the UK and have a break from the norm without sacrificing too much holiday time from work.
Amsterdam is a wonderful city to spend some time in but are mini cruises a good way to explore? And what happens on a mini cruise? I’m aiming to answer all your questions here!
Before we sailed on a Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise we had no idea about what it would be like and we struggled to find any information or reviews about the trip.
We travelled with our kids, who were young teens at the time but many people do the trip with younger kids, as a couple or even solo!

Best mini cruise to Amsterdam – DFDS
This is the mini cruise that we went on and can recommend. It’s a really great way to see Amsterdam as a short day trip from the UK!
Who runs mini cruises to Amsterdam? There are currently two options if you fancy a mini cruise: DFDS – Sails from Newcastle to Amsterdam (this is the one we did) P&O Ferries – Sails from Hull to Rotterdam
What is a mini cruise?
- A mini cruise is basically a 2 night ‘cruise’ where you sail late on the first day, sleeping overnight on the boat and arriving at your destination in the morning.
- You then get transferred to the city in the morning (Amsterdam in this case) for a day trip before returning to the ship and having a night on the boat returning.
- You arrive back on the third day in the morning.
DFDS do a couple of different mini cruises – you can do one like we did from Newcastle to Amsterdam (and vice versa) or there’s also one that goes from Denmark to Norway (one to try at another date when we’re travelling around Europe again!). They also used to do one from the UK to Norway but I don’t think that one is currently running.
P&O Ferries also do a very similar crossing but it’s from Hull to Rotterdam . They still transfer you to Amsterdam and that’s the destination for the cruise.
How long is an Amsterdam mini cruise?
Typically the cruise lasts 3 days and 2 nights. You spend the first evening on board the ship, arrive at your destination in the morning to spend the day and then sail back on the 2nd evening.
Is a mini cruise expensive?
Cruising as a term tends to conjure up images and feelings of an expensive trip. So is the mini cruise to Amsterdam expensive?
Currently, in 2022, the headline fares are around £40 per person for P&O and £75 per person for DFDS. Your final price is going to depend on what cabin you choose.
There are often deals to be had when booking the mini cruise with DFDS (and I imagine P&O). We managed to find a 2 for 1 offer which made our whole trip with the most basic cabin come in at around £120 for 4 people.
This gave us a super basic cabin (more on that below) for two nights and coach transfers for us all to Amsterdam. You can upgrade to better cabins should you want and if you can I would definitely recommend it.
On board, as probably expected, it’s a little more expensive than your average restaurant or shop. As is also probably expected, we were way too tight to be spending our cash on board so I can’t unfortunately comment on the quality of the restaurants – we took food with us!
I did see that breakfast was around €15 per adult so if you want to eat on board and not bring food with you make sure to budget accordingly.
What’s it like on board?
As I said before, we didn’t eat in the restaurant and we also didn’t partake in any bar entertainment either. (Although I’d say this wasn’t the best idea – as I mention below, it’s a cruise, don’t hole yourself up in your cabin with rubbish food. Go enjoy yourself!)
There was a cinema on board which was about €8 each, so not too dissimilar to on land and we did consider that if the film we wanted was showing on the way back but unfortunately it wasn’t so we didn’t. So if you see a showing you like, watch it, it might not be on the return journey!
The cabin that we had was very basic but did have everything you needed with a small en suite shower and toilet. You also get towels too so no need to bring those either.
The cabins are a little bit small with four people in them, especially when the upper bunks are down, but it wasn’t too bad really. Of course our kids were nearly grown so it was like having 4 adults in there.
One issue that we had with the cabins were that they were incredibly hot. We did wonder at one point whether they maybe didn’t want you too comfy in the cabins and wanted you to be out spending in the bars! It was like that both ways and just spoiled what would have been a quite enjoyable time otherwise.
Tip – make sure you have plenty of drinks with you. It’ll make the hot cabins a bit better.
Can you leave your belongings on the ferry?
One thing we wondered about and were a little worried about was whether we could leave our belongings on the ship while on the day trip – if you’re also worried, don’t be.
You keep the same cabin on the outward and inward legs so you can leave whatever you need to on board.
(This was correct when we did the trip – might be worth confirming with the ferry company if it’s a concern for you)
How long do you get in Amsterdam on the mini cruise?
Ok, this is quite a big and common question – how long do you get there? It might vary due to the company and any traffic but in general:
You get about 4 and a half hours in the city of Amsterdam on the mini cruise.
What to do in Amsterdam on a mini cruise?
Your time is going to be limited so bear that in mind when choosing what to do. Here are some ideas of places to go that can be done in the time you have. Unfortunately trips to tulip field and windmills like Kinderdijk will have to wait – you won’t have time.
I highly recommend getting tickets in advance if you can – Amsterdam can be busy!
- Canal cruise
- Van Gogh Museum
- Ann Frank Museum or walking tour
- Heineken Experience
- Rijksmuseum
- Madame Tussauds
What happens on the day trip?
You arrive in the Netherlands at about 9am at a place called IJmuiden which is around a 45 minute drive from the centre of Amsterdam.
After waiting for the car passengers to depart it’s the foot passengers turn to go through passport control. It was fine and fairly quick on the Amsterdam side but returning to Newcastle took forever so something to think about if you’re doing the opposite journey.
The coaches are waiting to take you in to the city and once full they head off, dropping you outside a hotel just opposite the train station so perfect for seeing the old town or getting on a canal cruise.
We probably arrived in Amsterdam at around 10.30am – 11am ish which gave us about 4 and a half hours before we got picked up.
It definitely didn’t seem enough to enjoy all there is in Amsterdam, but for us, as it was our first trip to the city it was nice enough to get a feel for it and wander round.
I really wanted to do some of the museums in Amsterdam and it’s really not enough time for doing that and exploring – but perhaps next time we’ll be able to stay longer! There are some really great kids museums in the Netherlands so definitely one to return for!
We were lucky and had a dry day to wander around – it would have been a different story if it was raining, but if you’re worried about that make sure you have some activities planned to keep you dry.
Is a mini cruise worth it?
So the main question would be, is it worth it overall?
We all really enjoyed our time away and for what we paid I think it was definitely worth it.
My tips to make the most of the mini cruise to Europe
If I was to do the cruise again here would be my tips to make the most of the day:
- if possible, upgrade the cabin so you’re feeling fresh and so that the cruise section of the trip is part of the experience
- I’d enjoy the restaurants on board more and the entertainment – honestly we used to be on such a budget we’d scrimp everywhere which isn’t always advisable. I’d say that while you can do that, since the mini cruise is the bulk of your time try to enjoy it!
- I’d consider getting some skip the line tickets for the museums I was interested in.
- I’d probably book in advance a trip on the canals .
- I’d definitely get a guide book or check in advance what we should do and where we should eat – we weren’t really prepared and so just wandered round soaking up the city. We were lucky the day was dry!

Frequently asked questions about our Short Cruise Breaks
On our Short Break holidays, you might visit:
Amsterdam in the Netherlands
Bruges (from Zeebrugge) in Belgium
Cherbourg in France
Hamburg in Germany
Le Havre in France
Rotterdam in the Netherlands
St Peter Port, Guernsey, in the Channel Islands
Bruges (from Zeebrugge)
Yes – each guest aged 18 years and older may bring up to 1 litre of wine, Champagne, beer, spirit or liqueur on board as they embark the ship for the first time only. Alcohol over the 1 litre limit will be stored and returned to the guest prior to the end of the cruise. If this alcohol is consumed in the dining rooms, bars, restaurants or lounge areas, it will be subject to a corkage fee of £20* per bottle per occasion, which will be charged to the guest’s on-board account.
You have the choice between a 3-night cruise, a 4-night cruise and a 5-night cruise on our Short Break holidays (with a fair few falling on weekend days).
It’s always worth checking the local weather before you head off on a Short Break, but in the summer you’ll generally need to dress for the heat (think dresses, shorts, t-shirts, sandals – and don’t forget your swimming costume) while the winter usually calls for layers and thick coats.
During your days on board, you can dress in whatever you like. However, on all our ships, we have two dress codes that apply in the evenings: Evening Casual and Black Tie. For nights when the dress code is Evening Casual, you can bring out your best shirt, dress and smart, dark denim. For nights where the dress code is Black Tie, make sure you pack your best tux, suit or cocktail dress.
There are some venues on each ship where dress codes don’t apply, so make sure you check your Horizon paper that’s delivered to your cabin each day to check where these are, as they vary ship by ship. For those travelling on family-friendly ships, dress codes also don’t apply to children aged 17 and under.
We tend to visit Hamburg in December on our Short Break holidays when it’s fairly frosty. Hamburg usually has highs of 5˚C and lows of 1˚C in December, with an average of 12 days of rain – but you might be lucky enough to be there when it snows.
The best time of year to head to Bruges is up to you – what do you want from the weather? What activities do you fancy doing? We’ve got Short Break cruise holidays that visit Bruges (from Zeebrugge) almost year-round. If you’re dreaming of walking around a chilly Christmas market with a hot chocolate (or mulled wine) in hand, December is the month for you. Or, if you’d rather be a bit warmer as you cycle through the countryside or wander medieval streets, April or May might be a better choice. A visit in October will add autumnal magic to a stroll along the canals as the leaves fall around you.
The best time of year to cruise to Amsterdam depends on what you’d like out of your holiday. Do you prefer the sun or a winter chill? Do you want to see the Light Festival and wander Christmas markets? Or would you rather see the world’s largest flower garden (think miles of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths) in bloom in the spring? How about cruising the canals in the heat of the summer sun, cocktail in hand? We visit Amsterdam almost year-round so that no matter your holiday style, you’ll find a Short Break cruise holiday to suit you.
Amsterdam is famous for its art galleries and museums (from the Van Gogh Museum to the Anne Frank house), beautiful canals, interesting architecture and lively nightlife. You’ll also find a deliciously innovative food scene and, in the spring, thousands upon thousands of tulips covering the city in a kaleidoscope of colours.
Summer brings warmth and sunshine to Amsterdam (with an average temperature of around 23°C) while winters are cold and bring a likely chance of snow. Amsterdam’s spring is fairly mild, heating up and drying out as it gets closer to summer, while autumn brings a good chance of rain as it cools down towards the end of the year.

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.
Explora Journeys’ Explora I
Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure
It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady
Oceania Cruises’ Vista
Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises
The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine
Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur
Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes
Silversea’s Silver Nova
Courtesy of Silversea Cruises
Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view. This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

Beautiful River Cruises That Will Take Your Breath Away
Posted: January 2, 2024 | Last updated: January 2, 2024
River adventures
There are trips especially for solo travelers
Finding alone time is increasingly easy on river cruise ships, many of which are going all out to cater to solo travelers. Take Riviera Travel River Cruises – every year the line operates a number of sailings designed specifically for solos. On these cruises, all cabins are single-occupancy only and there are no single supplement charges. In 2023, Riviera’s solo-friendly cruises include sailings along the Danube, Douro, Rhine, Rhône and Seine.
Ganga Vilas offers the world’s longest river cruise
Does disembarkation day always come too soon? Consider opting for one of the growing number of longer cruises. Ganga Vilas currently offers the world’s longest river cruise – a 51-day sailing along 27 rivers in India and Bangladesh onboard the luxurious 18-suite Ganga Vilas riverboat. The downside? These cruises don’t come cheap – prices start at around $32,000 per person.
CroisiEurope offers paddlewheel cruises on two European rivers
Paddlewheel ships aren’t just found on US rivers. CroisiEurope is the only cruise line to run paddlewheel cruises on two European rivers – the Elbe and the Loire. Other boats are few and far between – these rivers are notoriously shallow but the latest paddlewheel technology means CroisiEurope’s boats can sail these stretches of water year-round.
A-ROSA SENA is one of Europe’s most family-friendly ships
River cruises are often seen as the preserve of couples, but change is afoot. In 2022, A-ROSA River Cruises launched A-ROSA SENA , the only river cruise ship in Europe to have a dedicated kids’ club room. AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna has a theater area where children (and big kids) can watch movies and play games consoles, and Uniworld’s Generation Collection cruises offer kid-friendly activities and excursions.
Viking Cruises’ fleet has both ocean and river boats
If you’re a fan of cruising, what could be better than pairing a river cruise with an ocean one? For example, combine a sail along the Douro, which cuts across Spain and Portugal and finishes at the Atlantic coast, with an ocean-going cruise sailing out of Porto. Doing so is easy, especially if you sail with a line like Viking Cruises , which has a fleet including both ocean and river boats.
Viking holds the record for launching the most new ships in a single day
AmaWaterways’ Color of Provence cruise focuses on Black heritage in Paris
Europe’s rivers are lined with ancient cities and landmarks, but several cruise lines are delving deeper in Europe’s history by tackling a more diverse range of subjects. AmaWaterways is a great example – in 2023 its Color of Provence cruise includes a three-night visit to Paris which focuses on the city’s Black heritage, while another AmaWaterways cruise along the Rhône river includes a Black heritage tour of Marseille.
Excursions are varied, with smaller groups
Because river cruising ships are smaller, the chances of having to join tour groups the size of a Glastonbury crowd are slim, and excursions are more intimate. A case in point is European Waterways , known for their passion for slow travel. Excursions include a tour of the Château de la Motte led by the resident Baroness and visits to the Dalwhinnie whisky distillery, which you’ll travel to in an air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz minibus.
You can explore the Amazon Basin with Seabourn
More river cruise lines are heading to remote rivers. One example is Seabourn . In 2023 the line launches a 14-day Wild Guianas To The Amazon Basin cruise, which sails along Brazil’s Guajará River, a tributary of the Amazon. Excursions include a trip to meet local Indigenous groups – a reminder that Amazon river cruises are great options for getting off the beaten path.
Avalon Waterways has some of the largest windows on a river cruise
River cruise ships make excellent use of space, and we’re increasingly seeing this applied to windows. If you don’t manage to bag a balcony suite, don’t panic – it’s highly likely that you’ll have floor to ceiling windows. If you’re a stickler for a fantastic view, consider sailing with Avalon Waterways – their windows are some of the largest on a river cruise ship, and their Panorama Suites have the widest opening, wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in river cruising.
American Queen Voyages has launched exciting new itineraries
American river cruises have become incredibly popular in recent years, and in 2023 the American Queen Voyages launches the longest itineraries offered by this historic cruise line. The 23-day itineraries (the first one departs in July) will sail along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and take in lesser-known destinations such as Maysville in Kentucky, Madison in Indiana, Point Pleasant in West Virginia and Marietta in Ohio.
You might meet your hero onboard an AmaWaterways ship
River cruising companies are going all out to provide deeper insights into the places their ships sail through. One example is National Geographic Expeditions, which recently announced that it will join forces with AmaWaterways and launch several National Geographic Expeditions-chartered departures in 2024. Onboard experts – all of whom will be familiar with itinerary destinations – will include photographers, authors and explorers.
You can sail along the Hudson River with American Cruise Lines
Fancy sailing past the Empire State Building? Now you can – kind of. American Cruise Lines is the only cruise line that offers sailings along the mighty Hudson, along with several other lesser-known rivers, including the Napa and San Joaquin Rivers in California.
You can combine rail and water with Uniworld
In 2022 Uniworld launched cruises combining Danube River sailings with trips on Golden Eagle Luxury Trains. These rail and river cruise packages offer guests the chance to take a five-day train journey through central Europe before boarding the ship. Expect more cruise lines to combine these modes of transport in the coming years.
Experts will join passengers onboard Ponant ships
Uniworld’s decision to combine sailing with luxury railway trips onboard Golden Eagle’s trains is a sign of the times – we’ll see more collaborations designed to enhance guests’ experience. In 2023 Ponant is collaborating with Smithsonian Journeys to offer sailings with onboard experts, such as world-renowned climate specialist Steve Paton, who will provide further insight into areas such as the San Blas archipelago.
Riverside Luxury Cruises is the new kid on the block
River cruising might sound like a crowded market, but the launch of Riverside Luxury Cruises in April 2023 proves that there’s always room for more. This new line launched with one ship – Riverside Mozart – and offers cruises starting in Vienna, Budapest and Passau. The ship’s rooftop bar looks pretty special, although we’re equally excited about the cuisine, inspired by regions the ship sails through.
Even the busiest rivers have quiet spots
The landscape is fabulously diverse
Some river cruise companies cover lakes too
CroisiEurope is the only river cruise line operating on Lake Kariba in Southern Africa. There are two cruise ships to choose from – African Dream and Zimbabwean Dream. Both ships accommodate 16 passengers in eight cabins, and there’s a rooftop bar and restaurant from which guests can soak up the views.
Most river cruises are truly all-inclusive
We’ve all come across cruise lines which claim to be all-inclusive but are actually anything but. These days, more cruise lines are going all out to offer passengers better value for money by including everything from premium drinks to excursions. Scenic River Cruises is a great example – cruise prices include flights from the UK, transfers, premium drinks, all meals (including fine dining ones) and excursions.
You’re unlikely to feel seasick on a river cruise
River cruises will take you to the end of the world (almost)
River cruises can take you to some of the world’s most remote places, as well as waterways which simply aren’t explored very often. CroisiEurope, for example, is the only operator to offer cruises on Spain’s Guadalquivir River (pictured at Seville), while the Heritage Line’s new Upper Mekong cruise, which sets sail in August 2023, will focus on remote areas of Laos.
You can cruise the world’s longest river
The views are better
There are no interior cabins on river cruise ships – all cabins face outwards and most have floor-to-ceiling windows. Cruise lines make the most of the space in innovative ways, too. On several Uniworld vessels, for example, mirrors are actually concealed televisions. The cabins at the rear of riverboats are often the cheapest – but if you’re a light sleeper, remember that this is because the engines are located here.
Cruise lines are investing in air-filtering technology
One example is Amadeus River Cruises . In May 2023 the line launched Amadeus Riva, which has a hi-tech air filtration system with a two-stage purification system capable of removing aerosols – including any containing microscopic virus particles – from interior spaces.
The added extras are getting better
It's easier to avoid the crowds
There are no (or at least fewer) boring transfers
On ocean cruises, the excitement about seeing the local landmark/record-breaking attraction/ancient site quickly dissipates when there’s a one-hour bus journey between you and the site in question. Not so with river cruising, simply because of the increased accessibility. A great example is the iconic arch in St Louis, Missouri (pictured) – this feat of engineering is just a 10-minute walk from the dock used by river boats.

Ferries And Mini Cruises From Hull
Hull (or to give it is full name, Kingston upon Hull) is located in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and was founded by the monks of Meaux Abbey in the 12th century.
The monks needed to find a port from which they would more easily be able to export the wool that they gathered and processed, and they picked a spot that was right in between the River Hull and the River Humber – that spot became Hull.
👍 Hear about the deals first - click here and follow my Mini Cruise Addict page on Facebook (opens in new window).
From being an early port and quay, Hull has also been known as a market town, military port, trading area, industrial town, and fishing village.
The Humber Bridge can be found here. This impressive piece of engineering was built in 1973, and was a much needed crossing over the Humber Estuary. For those with a love of man-made engineering and architecture, it is a sight to behold.
A more natural place to visit is East Park. This 120 acre site is registered as Grade II listed with English Heritage, and it includes an animal education centre, boating, cycling, a play area, and a café amongst other family friendly activities.
History buffs aren’t left out either – there are a number of fascinating museums in Hull including the Hull Maritime Museum, the Hull and East Riding Museum, and Burton Constable Hall.

Driving Directions
The Port of Hull (King George Dock) sits just off the A1033 (Hedon Road), at the end of the A63 in Hull. The A63 follows the River Humber westwards until it becomes the start of the M62 motorway, the road that bridges East and West Yorkshire and that runs through to Liverpool.
Motorways that lead off the M62 are the A1(M) for Doncaster and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne; the M18 (and M180) for Doncaster and Grimsby; the M1 for Sheffield and Leeds; and the M60 for Manchester.
The A1079 runs northwards from Hull and links up with the city of York about 44 miles (about 71 kilometres) later.
Follow the A63 briefly and take the Humber Bridge across to the A15 for the A180 to Grimsby.
For Bridlington and Scarborough take the A165 from Hull which follows the eastern coastline northwards.
Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are well signposted. Terminal 1 is easy to drive to. terminal 2 is a little confusing as you have to pass through a security barrier and drive along a highly industrialised port road before taking the first right hand junction (road-marked "ferry"). This leads to the terminal building.
Cruise passengers usually need to head towards Alexandra Dock. This is the fourth exit off the first roundabout after turning off Hedon Road. The port doesn't handle many cruise ships per year so don't expect permanent signage. There should be plenty of marshals out in force on the day of embarkation to help guide cruise passengers to the right place.
Car parking
Passengers from Terminal 1 get the use of a multi-storey Pay and Display car park. Follow the signs as it can be confusing on how to enter it as it looks part of the terminal building.
Passengers from Terminal 2 don't have the same luxury as undercover car parking. The open air Pay and Display car park is quite expansive though, with a choice of car parks to accommodate a generous amount of cars.
When I looked in May 2016 both car parks charged the same rate of £7 per 24 hour period.
Cruise passengers will have separate car parking facilities at Alexandra Dock. Places normally must be reserved and paid for in advance although your cruise line will advise of this. The cost was unavailable at the time of writing but appears to be calculated on a per-cruise basis.
Getting there by coach
One National Express route - the 562 - serves the city of Hull. The coach departs London and travels north to Scarborough via Doncaster, Hull and York. Book your tickets here .
Getting there by train
Hull Railway Station is a large transport hub in the centre of the city, with the central bus station opposite. Direct services that run from Hull head to York, Bridlington, Doncaster, London via Selby, Sheffield, Scarborough, and Manchester.
Long distance times are very respectable. Manchester is just 2 hours away, Birmingham is 2½ hours away, both London and Newcastle-Upon-Tyne are under 3 hours away, Edinburgh is around 4½ hours away, and Cardiff is 6 hours away by train. Plan your journey here .
A taxi from Hull train station to the ferry terminal is around £10 one-way.
A bus service between the city and the ferry port operates during the main embarkation and disembarkation times. The pick-up point is Bus Stand D at St Stephen's Bus Station (which can be found opposite the train station). The cost of this service when I checked in May 2016 was £3.25 one-way.
Two for one mini cruises from Hull
P&O Ferries runs one of the longest running two-for-one promotions in the industry, normally from September to late February / early March. Whenever it release dates on the offer tickets are snapped up quickly for the prime dates. Even if you discover the offer relatively late, deals can still be found in the middle and toward the end of the promotion. Check here to see if P&O Ferries have a two for one deal from Hull on at the moment .

Hi do u 2 for 1 mini cruises to the Med for 2023 please
I've not heard of any such deals for the Med, although I know MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises tend to offer good value mini cruises around the Med (usually one way, for example, departing from Barcelona and ending in Marseilles). Some travel agents will package these up with flights and hotels, but you can also create your own itinerary should you wish.
Hi David can you tell me when the 2 for 1 deals start for hull to Rotterdam I know it’s October but what date thanks in advance.
Check here 😉
Hi looking to travel Hull to Zeebrughe on Saturday 9th December . What time does the ferry depart on the homeward journey ? How long is the transfer from the port to Brugge ? Thank you Karen Easton
On a Saturday or Sunday, the ship departs Zeebrugge at 1900hrs, although check-in must take place by 1730hours. The journey from the port to Bruges depends on traffic but normally takes half an hour or so.
Is it possible to buy a 2for 1 voucher but not stipulate a date as it is for a gift
Unfortunately not, but that would be a great idea. The issue is that the 2 for 1 spaces fill up quickly, so I suspect they wouldn't be able to guarantee a place onboard should such a gift voucher be offered.
P&O Ferries does offer gift vouchers ° which can be redeemed on the Hull to Amsterdam/Rotterdam/Bruges routes although I don't know if they could be used as payment for a 2 for 1 offer. A quick call to P&O should yield an answer.
We enjoyed our first weekend mini cruise experience going to Brugge and we're going for another one if we can get a good deal!
I'm glad you had a great time. There should be very good value deals coming towards the end of the year which would be ideal for another trip to Belgium!
