The Intrepid group we hiked with was great and our guide, Kate, was very professional, attentive and fun. 4-Day Islay & the Whisky Coast Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh Including Admissions

The Rabbie's 4-Day Islay & the Whisky Coast was a great vacation. We visited the major distilleries on Islay as well as some smaller ones. The hotel was located right near Bowmore and had a really good breakfast (included). Our tour guide, Al, was great. He had lots of interesting bits of information. Some small some big things about Scotland. We also stopped at a bunch of historical sites too. Only issue is that July and August are the 'quiet season' for many distilleries. Most of the distilleries didn't have tours. All of them were open for tastings. That's the main attraction for this tour.

Great fun. Our guide was knowledgeable, entertaining and very helpful. One felt that both he and Scottish Routes were well regarded by the various distilleries that we went to.

Reviews of small group tours to scotland.

This tour was absolutely SENSATIONAL! It was so surreal to be in filming locations but also so unexpectedly pleasant to stop off at a number of other destinations as well in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. Our guide was so friendly and clearly brought his all to the trip. Can't recommend this trip enough.
Intrepid needs to tighten up this tour. Two free afternoons is too much when one has only three days on the island. Either make the tour two full days or two full days with one full day free to make plans to go to Hoy or Rousay. Give people guidance on what to do on the free day.

Why you'll love Scotland

travel group scotland

Epic tales and terrific traditions

Scotland is the birthplace of Sherlock Holmes, the television, and whisky. So, the culture is a mix of poetry, intellect, and fun. The locals also love showing visitors a good time. So don’t be surprised when you’re invited to a Highland dance or regaled with folk tales at the local pub.

Famed beauty

Scotland’s landscapes are more dramatic than a superhero movie, more beautiful than a three carat diamond, and older than any of your grandparents’ stories. From blonde beaches to serene mountains: you’ll discover the scenery lives up to its reputation.

A trove of secrets

It’s no secret Scotland has fascinating history. But what’s less known, is how much of it’s shrouded in mystery. There are unexplained standing stones, untranslatable hieroglyphics, and unbelievable myths. So, keep your eyes peeled, your mind open, and your imagination switched on.

Natural flavours

Everyone wants a slice of Scotland’s local larder. The seafood is exported to the best restaurants, Angus beef is enjoyed everywhere, and whisky is loved worldwide. And although these flavours travel far, there’s no place it tastes better than in Scotland.

9 Best Scotland Small Group Tours You Need To Book

Posted by Francesca Brooking | Scotland | 8

Scotland is a dream destination for nature and adventure lovers.

Castles nestle in rugged landscapes, mirror-like lochs contain mysteries of monsters within their bowels, islands have some of the most dramatic geological formations in the world, plus so much more waiting to be discovered.

If you’ve never been to Scotland, it may be overwhelming trying to plan a trip with so much to see and do. Enter small group Scotland tours – the best, most flexible to book and hassle-free way to explore the country.

The beauty of a small group tour is that you can stick to the main travel route or go as intrepid as you like. It just comes down to the one you choose.

Woman in a red coat sitting and looking at a lighthouse on one of the Scotland small group tours.

So, with so many tour options out there, which one should you pick?

To make it easier, I’ve rounded up the best small-group tours of Scotland. I’ve chosen each one based on my own experience, the reviews, the company and of course, the itinerary.

All tours featured are eco-certified which means they have a positive impact on the environment and help you travel sustainably too. It’s a win-win!

Quick answer: best Scotland small group tours

Highlights of scotland , scotland’s orkney islands .

  • Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands
  • St Andrews & Fife Fishing Village
  • Outlander Day Tour
  • Rosslyn Chapel & Hadrian’s Wall
  • Isle of Skye 3-Day Tour
  • Lewis, Harris and the Outer Hebrides
  • Isle of Skye & Jacobite Steam Train

Why book a small group tour of Scotland

Scotland is well-known for its rugged scenery and jaw-dropping views around every corner. If you’re planning a trip, it can be overwhelming to know where to start and what you want to include in your itinerary.

Tours do the hard work for you by fitting in all the best highlights that guarantee a rewarding trip.

Plus, you don’t need to worry about the logistics of transport or hotel bookings either. This is vital at a time when travel is so precarious and restrictions change at a moment’s notice.

The best tours are flexible and have less complicated moving parts, giving you peace of mind if you do have to postpone or cancel.

What’s more, doing a group tour of Scotland is a great way to get a more in-depth understanding of the history and culture as they’re run by local guides.

You’ll get insider information and recommendations. Plus, activities and experiences you might not have come across otherwise.

You’ll also get a chance to meet like-minded people. Small group tours rarely go above a dozen people to keep them intimate and personalised.

Who knows, you could be swapping stories with your new best friend over a dram in a cosy pub in Orkney!

Best small group tours of Scotland

Here’s a round-up of some of the best Scotland small group tours that highlight the very best of the country from its rugged highlands, remote islands, scenic castles, mysterious lochs, history, fishing villages and more.

Whether you have a week or a day, there’s a tour to suit every schedule.

View of the colourful shops of Victoria Street in Edinburgh, Scotland.

  • Length: 7 days
  • Start & Finish: Edinburgh – Glasgow
  • Highlights: Edinburgh Castle, Loch Ness, Culloden Moor, Isle of Skye, Eileen Donan Castle, watching the Jacobite Steam Train cross Glenfinnan Viaduct.

This Highlights of Scotland tour is exactly that, giving you a snapshot of the very best the country has to offer within a week.

It starts in Edinburgh and you have the option to do guided or self-guided tours of the city before being whisked to Inverness in the heart of the highlands.

From there, you’ll discover the mystery of “Nessie” on a boat cruise of Loch Ness and see Culloden Moor where the Jacobite Rising was defeated in 1746.

Other exciting highlights of the tour include the Isle of Skye, the chance to see the famous Jacobite Steam Train cross Glenfinnan Viaduct and a whisky tasting at Ben Nevis Distillery before finishing in Glasgow, the cultural capital of Scotland.

This guided tour is best for those who are short on time but want to see as many Scotland highlights as possible. You travel mainly by private vehicle with an average group of 12 people and a friendly local guide with you the whole way.

I recommend this tour because it’s a great balance of comfort and adventure. You stay in cosy accommodation but you also get to explore the wilds of the Scottish Highlands through hikes, kayaking, cycling and even visiting a reindeer farm (all optional)!

That’s exactly what the best Scottish tours should be like.

The Orkney Islands, one of the best small group tours of Scotland to do.

  • Length: 5 days
  • Start & Finish: Inverness
  • Highlights: Neolithic town of Skara Brae, coastal walk on Shapinsay Island, live music and whisky tastings.

This five-star rated tour takes you up to the Orkney Islands on the northeastern coast of Scotland.

Perfect for ancient history lovers, the tour starts in Inverness where you’ll meet your local guide before taking a scenic train journey to Thurso, transfer to the port of Scrabster and catch the ferry to Kirkwall in Orkney.

Here, you’ll spend the next 4 days exploring the Neolithic Skara Brae, the historic Ring of Brodgar and 12th-century St Magnus Cathedral. You also have plenty of coastal sea walks, whisky tastings, live music and pubs galore against a wild, scenic backdrop.

The maximum number of people on this tour is 12 and you get around using a mix of private and public transport. Your group leader stays with you for the duration of the trip too.

I recommend this tour because it gives you the chance to explore lesser-travelled areas of Scotland.

Although you’re with a group, you can easily split off and do your own thing too. Plus the use of public transport allows you to experience the local culture up close!

Loch Ness, Glencoe and the Highlands Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh

View of the Scottish Highlands with a stream winding through.

  • Length: 12 hours approx.
  • Start & Finish: Edinburgh
  • Highlights: Loch Ness boat trip, Glencoe and Cairngorms National Park.

If you’re looking for a small group tour of Scotland that covers the best of the highlands in a day then this one’s for you.

During this one-day excursion, you’ll head straight up to Glencoe passing Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument and Linlithgow Palace along the way.

You’ll then journey onwards to Fort William, soon reaching the shores of Loch Ness where you can take a boat cruise on the water. After lunch, it’s another drive to the breathtaking Cairngorms National Park before heading back to Edinburgh.

The small group tour has a maximum of 16 travellers and transport is a comfy Mercedes minibus. Your driver guide will also give you some insightful commentary during your trip.

My favourite thing about this tour is that even though it’s a busy schedule there are plenty of breaks along the way so you’re not constantly on the road.

Departing from Edinburgh, it also brings some of the most remote Scottish landmarks within reach. Don’t just take my word for it, it’s highly rated too!

St Andrews & the Fishing Villages of Fife Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh

Anstruther Harbour with boats and terracotta-roofed houses behind.

  • Length: 8.5 hours approx.
  • Highlights: The Forth Road Bridge, fishing villages of East Neuk, St Andrews, Falkland Palace and Gardens.

If you like the idea of exploring more of the east coast (Scotland’s west coast already gets a LOT of love), then this St Andrews & Fishing Villages of Fife tour is the perfect option for you.

The day trip starts by crossing over the famous Forth Bridge where you’ll get a chance to see the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Forth Rail Bridge.

Journey onwards to Fife, a peninsula bordered by the North Sea where you’ll stop to explore the traditional fishing village of Anstruther.

Soon, you’ll arrive in St Andrews where you’ll have free time to enjoy its 1000 years of history and its accolade as the birthplace of golf!

The last stop on the tour is Falkland Palace and Garden, a gorgeous fairytale palace that was once home to the Stewarts (Scottish Royal Family). Explore the palace or the town of Falkland, an Outlander filming location!

The tour has a maximum of 16 travellers and you travel in comfort in a Mercedes minibus. The tour guides are highly knowledgeable and the local area too.

It’s a fantastic way to get a snapshot of Scotland’s east coast!

Outlander Day Tour from Glasgow or Edinburgh

Blackness Castle at golden hour. A must-do on this Outlander small group tour of Scotland.

  • Length: 8-10 hours approx.
  • Start & Finish: Glasgow or Edinburgh depending on the option picked
  • Highlights: Filming locations from Outlander including Midhope Castle (Lallybroch), Blackness Castle (Fort William), Culross (Crainsmuir) and Doune Castle (Castle Leoch).

Are you an Outlander lover? If so, this tour is a must-do!

Follow in the footsteps of Claire and Jamie on this full-day tour of all the major filming locations of this television series.

The tour starts with a drive to Doune Castle which you might recognise as Castle Leoch and Winterfell from Game of Thrones (quite the film star!).

Then you’ll journey to Falkland, the filming location for Inverness in the 1940s before arriving at Midhope Castle (Lallybroch).

Look out for the Royal Burgh of Culross too which was the filming location for Crainesmuir where Geillis Duncan lived.

The last stop is the imposing Blackness Castle used in some of the scenes for Fort William and Wentworth.

I recommend this five-star rated tour because it’s perfect for Outlander buffs but those who are keen to discover Scottish history and culture will love it too.

Enjoy dramatic countryside views, a dram or two of whisky and a knowledgeable local guide giving you all the insider info on Outlander.

This small group guided Scotland tour is a private minibus with max 8 people so it’s nice and intimate. You have the flexibility to start from either Glasgow or Edinburgh too.

Editor’s tip: You can also do a two-day Outlander tour that covers the Clava Cairns (the inspiration behind Craigh na Dun) and Culloden Moor. Check it out here.

Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian’s Wall Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh

View of Hadrian's Wall snaking over the green hills of Northern England.

  • Length: 10.5 hours approx.
  • Highlights: Rosslyn Chapel (featured in the Da Vinci Code), Melrose Abbey, English border and Hadrian’s Wall.

No trip to Scotland is complete without visiting the borders. This small group day tour takes you there and beyond to Northern England where you can walk part of the way along the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hadrian’s Wall.

Ideal for history lovers, this small group tour combines history with architectural intrigue against the stunning backdrop of the Scottish and English border.

The first stop is the mysterious Rosslyn Chapel which gained international fame after featuring in The Da Vinci Code.

Next, it’s a visit to the ruins of Melrose Abbey wherein lies the final resting place of King Robert the Bruce’s heart. Then it’s time to cross the English border to reach Housesteads Fort, the best-preserved section of Hadrian’s Wall which was built 1900 years ago by the Roman Empire.

The last stop is Jedburgh, a pretty market town in the Scottish Borders as you head back north to Edinburgh.

I recommend this tour because it’s got a bit of everything – including two countries! Although it’s a bestseller, tour groups are kept to 16 people max so you can make the most of your knowledgeable guide.

Isle of Skye Small Group 3-Day Tour from Edinburgh

Green hills and grey lochs of the Quiraing, the famous landslide in Skye. You can see this on this Skye 3 day tour.

  • Length: 3 days
  • Highlights: Glencoe, 5 Sisters of Kintail, Eilean Donan Castle, Isle of Skye and Loch Ness.

If you’re keen to see the highlights of Scotland but you don’t have a whole week to spare, this 3-day tour is a great choice. It gives you a snapshot of the highlands and islands.

On the first day, you’ll go on a detour through the highlands to the Isle of Skye – passing Doune Castle, Glencoe and Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis (Scotland’s highest peak).

Then it’s a truly breathtaking drive ahead as you take the ‘road to the isles’ through the 5 Sisters of Kintail (my nose was practically glued to the window in awe!).

The second day is all about Skye – as it should be! There’s some flexibility here but the Trotternish Peninsula is not to be missed.

Home of the Quiraing, a famous landslide, it’s a jaw-dropping sight. Neist Point and the Old Man of Storr are worth seeing too. Make the most of your private vehicle because you won’t be able to see it all on foot!

On the third day, you’ll head back to the mainland to Loch Ness for lunch, and pass Loch Laggan, Dalwhinnie and Blair Castle before returning to Edinburgh.

If you want to make the most of your time in Scotland but you only have a few days I highly recommend doing this tour.

You get to see the very best of the Highlands and Skye. It’s just 16 people max so you don’t feel too crowded either. What’s more, the tour is operated by Rabbies, one of the best Scottish tour companies to book.

Editor’s tip: If you would rather keep the tour to one day instead of three, this one is a great alternative.

Lewis, Harris, and Outer Hebrides Tour from Inverness

Luskentyre beach in the sunlight on the Isle of Harris.

  • Highlights: Ferry to the Isle of Lewis, Callanish Standing Stones, white sand beaches of Luskentyre on the Isle of Harris.

Did you know Scotland is home to some of the best beaches in Europe? I’m talking soft white sand and striped turquoise waters that would almost make you think you’ve stumbled across a portal to the Caribbean. The only giveaway is the lack of palm trees… and the weather.

If you’re keen to see the beauty of these beaches first-hand, this 3-day island hopping tour in the Outer Hebrides is a must!

Starting from Inverness, you’ll head to Ullapool where you’ll catch the ferry to Stornoway on Lewis. Look out for dolphins and whales!

On day two, you’ll venture to Harris with its striking mountains and unspoilt beaches. The one you’ve been waiting for is Luskentyre Beach which looks like the Caribbean on a good day.

On day three, the tour will take you to the Lewis parish of Uig, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where Vikings settled more than 800 years ago. Then you’ll visit the Callanish Standing Stones, 5000-year-old megaliths that are said to be once giants.

With just 16 people maximum, this tour offers an amazing way to explore some of Scotland’s most remote and breathtaking islands on the west coast. It’s ideal for those who love wildlife, rugged isles, ancient history and beaches!

Find out more about how to get to Invernes s by road, rail or air.

Isle of Skye & Jacobite Steam Train 3-Day Highland Tour

The red Jacobie Steam Train crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct. This 3-day tour is one of the best Scotland small group tours to do this activity.

  • Highlights: Loch Ness, Isle of Skye, riding on the Jacobite Steam Train (from May – October) and Culloden Moor.

If riding the Jacobite Steam Train is on your Scotland bucket list then this tour is a must. Similar to the other 3-day tour above, it focuses on the key highlights of the Highlands and Isle of Skye.

The main difference is the third day. Instead of driving from Skye back to the mainland, you go down to the south of the island and take a short ferry ride to the fishing village of Mallaig (look out for dolphins on your way. One loved following our ferry!).

From Mallaig, you have the option to ride the Jacobite Steam Train to Fort William and enjoy spectacular views as the train crosses Glenfinnan Viaduct (if you want a photo op, sit or stand on the right – trust me!). The train slows down over the viaduct so you can soak it all in.

Once you arrive in Fort William , you follow the spectacular rugged route south through Glencoe and Rannoch Moor before reaching Edinburgh in the early evening.

This tour is perfect for those who want to get all the highlights of Scotland – including the steam train – in just three days.

Just make sure to book it between May and October otherwise the steam train is unavailable. It’s also important to book it in advance as tickets for the steam train sell out quickly!

Editor’s tip: Prefer to do Skye in a day? Do this tour instead!

What about self-guided tours?

Want to have the structure and ease of a tour with the flexibility of travelling solo? I recommend Byway Travel.

Girl standing in the distance looking at the Fairy Glen circle of stones on Skye.

The travel company specialises in building bespoke no-fly travel itineraries based on your interests and budget.

Although it’s a self-guided trip, Byway is with you every step of the way via Whatsapp and handles all the logistics so you can enjoy the travel part. It’s a great alternative to doing a guided tour of Scotland!

Such a thorough and helpful overview! Which ones to choose? They all look so great. I would probably start with the Outer Hebrides tour having read and really enjoyed Peter May’s Lewis Trilogy

Thank you! The Outer Hebrides tour is a great choice!

Great selection of tours! I would pick the ones visiting Isle of Skye, and Jacobite train, and would be nice to go on Outlander tour too.

Thank you! All good choices 🙂

Scotland might be my favorite country so all of these tours look amazing! I never got the chance to visit any of the islands so I’d love to go on the Orkney and Isle of Skye tours! As a solo traveler, tours are a great way to meet people and not feel alone.

I agree! Plus transport and accommodation sorted. Definitely worth heading back to see the islands!

Really useful, I don’t drive which restricts some of the places I can visit in Scotland. Will have to keep some of these in mind next time I’m up there 🙂

Me too! Yes, do.

Scotland Vacation FAQs

Do i need a passport or a visa to travel to scotland.

UK and EU citizens are required to have a valid passport or a national identity card to enter Scotland. Citizens of all other countries must have a valid passport.

Citizens of the EEA member states as well as other countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the USA are not required to apply for a visa to travel to Scotland.

Prior to travelling to Scotland, citizens of all other countries should contact their local Scottish Embassy or visit the Department of Foreign Affairs website for more information.

What currency is accepted in Scotland?

Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, so its official currency is the British Pound.

Is tipping customary in Scotland?

Tips are not included in our tour price and tipping is entirely at your discretion. A guided price to tipping in Scotland is generally between 10-15% of cost value. In taxies, it’s usually nice to round up to the nearest five, but it’s not expected.

What is internet access like in Scotland?

Internet access is quite good in Scotland.  Most B&Bs, hotels, cafés, pubs, and tourist attractions across the country offer Wi-Fi access to their customers or visitors. As you venture into the highlands and islands, you will struggle to access reliable mobile internet signal.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Scotland?

Mobile phone coverage is good in most parts of Scotland. However, ensure your global roaming is fully activated before travelling to Scotland, so you can enjoy the benefits of your phone plan away from home.

What are toilets like in Scotland?

Toilets in Scotland are modern and flushable. In addition to the public restrooms you can find in most towns and villages, some are also available in service stations and pubs.

Is smoking legal in Scotland?

In 2006, Scotland banned smoking in public buildings. While smoking is prohibited in work and public places, it is however permitted in the street and in private accommodation.

Can I drink the water in Scotland?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in most parts of Scotland — especially in large cities and towns like Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Sterling. However, it is recommended not to drink from the bathroom sink.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Scotland?

In Scotland, most stores will accept credit and debit cards, and it’s illegal in the UK to charge you to use them. Some small stores won’t have card machines, though, so it’s good to have some spare cash — just in case.

What is ATM access like in Scotland?

ATMs are common in Scotland, they can generally be found outside banks, in grocery stores and in transit centers.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling in Scotland?

I had such a terrific time on the tour. I cannot believe how much I was able to see and experience, from the beautiful lochs and picturesque landscapes to the unique small towns all over the country. Some personal favourites include the Quiraing on the Isle of Skye, driving through the Applecross Peninsula, the Glenfinnan Viaduct, and exploring Inverness... What really made the tour was our guide, Terry. Not only was he incredibly kind and fun to be around, he has such an immense wealth of knowledge. Terry is a natural storyteller; he spoke in a very engaging way about so many things, from history (neolithic, medieval, and modern) and culture to local trade and wildlife. He also made a huge effort to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and to show us some spectacular parts of the country we would never have known existed. He made the experience so special.

Our guide Alex, was wonderful, attentive, humorous, knowledgable, structured yet flexible and just a delight. The accommodations varied each time we changed, each was distinct in it's own way, but all were top notch. Our tour was filled with sights from the itinerary we were sent, and also with sights or attractions Alex thought we'd enjoy based on his experience of us. Again, all right on point. I had numerous very powerful, and at times emotional, learning experiences about my family of origin, a clan from Scotland - so much so that I bought a kilt and accessories, along with a scarf in our family tartan colors at Loch Carron Weavers as we were going to the Applecross Peninsula. The Western Highlands were magnificent, as were the castle tours and castle ruins we saw along the way. Thank you for a wonderful trip experience! It's obvious why you were voted the #1 Tour Company in Scotland last year. Well done!

travel group scotland

My husband and I just completed our 8 day Best of Scotland Tour. Our guide, Tom, was outstanding! We couldn't have asked for a better guide to show us the beauty of Scotland!! Around every corner there was something beautiful or historical to see and learn about, or an experience to enjoy. Our accommodations and meals were all great and added local flavor to a trip we'll always remember.

I really appreciate having an itinerary that's set for the trip. I've had trips in the past where we didn't plan ahead and it became stressful trying to come up with activities to do. I never feel that way when I travel with Nordic Visitor. Great spots to visit and great company. It was a wonderful trip.

We booked our tour of Scotland with Nordic Visitor based on a past experience on a tour in Iceland. We loved both of them. The itinerary was well planned and covered a lot of different parts of the country. Guides were well informed and lots of fun. Our hotels were top-notch. Going on a small group tour was much better than trying to do the drive ourselves. We could relax and enjoy the scenery, something we could not have done if we had to concentrate on driving.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scotland Small Group Guided Tours

You may have a few questions before booking your escorted tour, so we’ve compiled a list of the most commonly asked ones for your convenience. For more in-depth information, you can check out this handy Scotland Travel Guide .

It’s also good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. To find out about our booking process, payments and more, please read our FAQs and booking terms .

1. WHAT IS A SMALL GROUP TOUR?

A small group tour is where a local guide leads you and a few like-minded travellers on an adventure together. Your guide will share their in-depth knowledge with you while taking you to all the best spots.

As well as being able to learn from expert guides, we believe that by keeping the group small you’ll have a more personal experience.

This is why, at Nordic Visitor, our Scotland group tours have a maximum of 15 people. Plus, exploring in a minibus means you will be able to visit places that large groups and coaches can’t get to.

2. IS IT SAFE TO EXPLORE SCOTLAND ON A GUIDED TOUR?

Yes, Scotland is a safe place to visit on a guided group tour thanks to its public healthcare services and high health and safety standards. For any  Scotland travel updates , and to find out why you can Book With Confidence , check out these helpful pages.

3. WHY IS A LOCAL TOUR GUIDE IMPORTANT?

Having a handpicked tour guide who can share their local knowledge with you will make your adventure that much more memorable. They’ll take you to the Highlands’ best hidden gems, and you’ll learn about the history and culture from someone who lives here.

Not to mention that you’ll get the inside scoop on the best local whiskies, the most intriguing castles, and the ultimate breathtaking viewpoints.

If you’d prefer to travel in a group of your own choosing, such as with your friends and family, why not consider a privately guided tour of Scotland ? Or, if you’d like to meet new people but haven’t decided on a destination yet, then check out these escorted tour packages in Northern Europe .

4. HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THERE BE IN THE GROUP?

The maximum number of guests on small group trips to Scotland is 15. Capping the group gives you more personal contact with your guide. Plus, it also means that you’ll get to know your fellow travellers better than you would in a large group.

5. ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED TO JOIN?

We welcome children aged 13 and over on our guided small group tours. Before you book, it’s worth noting that these packages feature trips to distilleries and other activities catering to adults. Please also consider that triple rooms are not available from our accommodation providers.

If you’re travelling as a family or with younger kids, we recommend looking into our self-drive Scotland tours , as these offer more flexibility.

6. WHAT MEALS ARE INCLUDED?

You can begin each day full of energy as breakfast is provided each morning. On the nights when you are not staying in Edinburgh or Glasgow, your evening meals are also included. You can see exactly what meals are part of your tour package in the “what’s included” section.

While Scotland is known for interesting local delicacies like haggis and black pudding, there’s also a top-notch food scene here. Edinburgh and Glasgow in particular have a wide selection of places to eat. Venturing into the Scottish Highlands, you’ll get to sample plenty of delicious local cuisine, including fresh seafood on the Isle of Skye .

If you have any special dietary needs, please let us know when you book so that we can make arrangements before you arrive.

7. WHAT SORT OF ROOMS WILL I BE STAYING IN?

You’ll be staying in hotels and guesthouses that have been handpicked for their comfort, cleanliness and friendly atmosphere. This means you can relax after a day of exploring, safe in the knowledge that each accommodation has been quality tested by our travel experts.

Usually double and twin rooms are available at our accommodation options. Please choose your preferred room type when you book so your travel consultant can make sure that everything is perfect for your trip.

If you’re booking onto a small group trip as a solo traveller to Scotland , you can rest assured that you’ll have your own private room. While not all tour providers would assign you a room of your own in this case, at Nordic Visitor your comfort and enjoyment is our priority.

It’s also worth noting that our hotels and guesthouses do not offer triple rooms.

8. WHAT LUGGAGE CAN I TAKE ON A SMALL GROUP TOUR?

You can bring one suitcase or large bag per person for your overnight items. We also recommend bringing a daypack for daily essentials, like a camera, extra layers and wallets.

Between overnight stops your luggage will travel with you on the minibus. In this case we ask that you please take your bag to your room on arrival and then back on to the bus for the next day’s drive.

Figuring out what to bring with you can be a challenge. Happily, you can refer to our handy Scotland packing guide for tips and advice on what you’ll need for your trip.

9. WILL THERE BE BATHROOM FACILITIES ON THE BUS?

To ensure you can get to all the best spots on your small group tour, you’ll be exploring Scotland in a minibus, rather than a large coach.

This means there aren't any bathroom facilities on the bus. But your guide and driver will factor in plenty of comfort breaks and opportunities to stretch your legs into each day’s journey.

10. HOW MUCH LEG ROOM WILL I HAVE?

Each of our minibuses has been chosen so that you can relax as you travel between stops. You’ll find that none of our tour buses are over 3 years old and there’s plenty of space onboard for everyone.

The standing height and seating room for most of our tour buses is designed to comfortably fit someone who is just above 6’4” (193 centimetres). Happily, this ensures that even most of our taller guests can travel with ease.

There will also be plenty of comfort breaks along the way where you can get some fresh air and take a short stroll.

11. DO YOU TIP YOUR TOUR GUIDE IN SCOTLAND?

Providing a gratuity is entirely up to you. In Scotland tipping your tour guide is not expected. Of course, if you’d like to show your gratitude with a tip, we’re sure your guide will appreciate it.

12. IS A SMALL GROUP TOUR THE BEST WAY TO TOUR SCOTLAND?

Many of our guests find that joining a small group tour makes for an immensely rewarding and hassle-free travel experience. You’ll get to meet and explore with like-minded people, while benefiting from the in-depth knowledge of your guide.

This is also the perfect way to discover Scotland if you’d prefer not to drive or would like company on your adventure but are travelling solo . Discover why a guided tour of Scotland is one of the best small group trips in Europe for solo travellers .

On the other hand, you could opt for one of our Scotland self-drive packages . Travelling independently is the best choice if you enjoy having plenty of flexibility and like going at your own pace.

Alternatively, if you’d rather have a guide but just want to go with friends and family, you could consider our escorted private tours in Scotland .

13. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

You can choose the departure that suits you best from the list of available start dates between May and September. If you have particular dates in mind, please make sure to book early in case that departure fills up.

You’ll also be able to see how many spaces are left on each start date when you check a trip’s online availability calendar. Remember, each tour operates with a maximum of 15 guests.

14. CAN I EXTEND MY TOUR BY A DAY OR TWO?

Yes, it’s easy to extend your time in Scotland. When booking online you can add extra days in Edinburgh or Glasgow to explore independently before or after your Highlands tour. This is perfect if you want to soak up even more culture in Scotland’s vibrant cities. Explore these amazing things do do in Edinburgh for inspiration.

If you’d like to include additional nights in your tour package but didn’t select this option when you booked online, please contact your travel consultant. They will check availability and make arrangements for you.

15. WHEN SHOULD I ORGANISE MY FLIGHTS?

We advise checking estimates for flight times and prices before booking your trip online. Once your tour is confirmed by email, usually within 2 working days, you can go ahead and purchase your flights.

Please get in touch with us if you have missed out on flights and we’ll do our best to accommodate a change of dates.

16. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY SCOTLAND TRIP?

In Scotland it’s possible to experience glorious sunshine and rain, all in one day. So although you might be travelling in summer, it’s best to be prepared for every season when deciding what to pack for your trip.

No matter the time of year, we recommend bringing:

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm, insulated jacket
  • Warm fleece or jumper
  • Light base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Reusable water bottle
  • UK plug adapter

You might also like to take an umbrella, handy if you find yourself spending a day touring the city sights in the rain. For more information, read our helpful packing guide for Scotland , complete with seasonal tips on what to bring.

Our Edinburgh-based travel experts will help you with any questions you may have about booking a tour of Scotland. Get in touch with us if you would like to know more or if you are ready to start planning your trip.

Edinburgh Scotland‘s capital is often a good place to start a tour of Scotland, but you will also be told Glasgow is good place to start a small group tour in Scotland. Such is the Scottish history of rivalry between these two cities. Odyssey has a tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow. Before the Vikings, Scotland was settled by the Picts, who were said to have migrated from Scythia (Scandinavia) before forming powerful kingdoms in what is now northern Scotland and from there these clans headed south. Malcolm II, who was king from 1005 to 1034, became the first king to reign over land roughly corresponding to much of modern Scotland. Our article on Scottish History provides great background reading on the formation of Scotland and Scotland‘s capital, Edinburgh . Learn more about Scottish culture including their sense of humour and a fascinating history on your tour of Scotland, a vacation mixed with education with amazing landscapes and beautiful scenery serving as your backdrop. The winding cobblestone roads in Glasgow and Edinburgh starkly contrast with the Scottish highlands that often include Ben nevis and the Scottish isle of the outer Hebrides or isle of Skye but their beauty blends just as well as their world-famous Scottish whisky on many Scottish tours. Touring Scotland

The need to know

Getting around

Odyssey usually travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Scotland has a centralised and impressively extensive rail network run by Transport Scotland, which links towns to the major cities. It is also covered by a bus network that is said to place 95% of the popuation within 5 minutes walk of a bus stop, catering to local, national, and international services.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour Guides

Odyssey always engages local guides with regional knowledge to ensure an authentic experience during which you can learn as much as possible about the history and culture of places you visit.

Geography, environment & weather

Scotland forms part of the United Kingdom, and the northern third of the island of Great Britain as well as 790 additional surrounding islands. These are encompassed by the Shetland Islands, Orkney Islands, and the Inner and Outer Hebrides. In terms of topography, it’s mountainous and rugged, although most of the population is to be found in the Lowlands in the south and east.

Scotland’s climate is above all distinguished by its changeability and variation. Sometimes, a short drive will take you to completely different conditions, so the key to preparation is layering! During Spring, Summer, and Autumn, max temperatures tend to range between 7 and 17 degrees celcius, and during winter, the average maximum temperature is 5 degrees. In Spring and Autumn, you’ll find that the weater is usually pleasant but there will still be snow on the mountains. The country is also known for its rain. However, because of Scotland’s topography, it rains far more in the west than it does in the east. Scotland’s sunniest location is The Fife Coast, with an average of 1500 hours of sunshine per year.

World Heritage Sites

The United Kingdom boasts 31 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, many of which are located in Scotland. You can view the official list of the sites here https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/gb. It is well worth visiting every site, if you are able. But here’s a few highlights from the bunch:

New Lanark – a picturesque restored 18th century mill village that sits on the River Clyde. It includes recreated houses of those who worked at the cotton mill, and includes a shop selling locally made textiles!

The Forth Bridge – This is a distinct and gorgeous bridge that crosses the Firth of Forth. In 2016, it was voted Scotland’s greatest manmade wonder, and is often seen as a symbol of the country.

The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh – This one’s pretty self-explanatory, but remember, if you’re visiting Edinburgh, take your time to explore and wander through one of the best-preserved cities in the UK.

Festivals & events

The most famous and grandest Scottish festival is, of course, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. If you’re interested in the Fringe, check out Odyssey’s tour, which runs every year and includes a series of hand-picked events! Also worth putting on the calendar is the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Fesitval, which takes place around May each year, and includes over 500 whisky-centric events. These include distillery tours, tastings, and much more. If you’re into literature, the Edinburgh International Book Festival is among the world’s finest writers’ festivals. Taking place in August, it usually hosts around 1,000 writers and thinkers from across the globe.

Eating & Drinking

Now is a better time than ever to explore Scotland’s food and drink culture. This is because in early 2018, Scotland began to implement a national strategy to position itself as a global destination for cuisine.

Scotland is probably best known for its whisky, the export of which brings billions of dollars into the economy. In regions known for whisky such as Speyside and the Isle of Islay, many distilleries are open for tours and tastings. You’ll also find that the flavour of whisky differs significantly depending on its region of origin, so it’s worth exploring a range of distilleries!

But Scotland isn’t simply a nation of whisky. Scottish lobsters are among the most sought after in the world, showing up on the menus of many Michelin-starred restaurants. Scotland is also known for its salmon, which is the nation’s biggest food export. It is generally of prestige quality, a product for which buyers will pay a premium.

Health & Safety

While much of Scotland is usually safe to travel around, it’s important to stay alert to anything unusual. Also, you will often see signs warning of pickpockets in areas popular with tourists, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your belongings at all times.

Electrical supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The electricity supply runs at 230V, 50Hz. British plugs have three flat, rectangular pins which form a triangle. These are shared by Ireland, Malta and some former British colonies, but Australia is not one of them.

Lovely hotel and the location could not have been better. I'd stay there again.

Great hotel (perfect location), wonderful tour guide (Robert was excellent in every respect), the half-day walking tour was fun and informative, and the events selected exposed me to Fringe events I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. Very well thought out and put together.

We found all the guides in each place excellent, some more than others, but always knowledgeable and obviously in love with their chosen careers. David our coach driver was excellent also, coping with some difficult situations with a cool head and providing us with a running commentary on a country he knows so well - especially Norfolk his home county!

Sally and Angus H. June 2017

Wife Brenda and I just completed Odyssey tour in UK entitled “Canals and Railways” led by Mal Bock. Absolutely superb, and Mal’s leadership faultless. Extremely good value considering only seven guests, superb local guides and drivers, a most comfortable coach with seating for 24. . Hotels chosen were excellent, most with real character, not places one would have chosen without local knowledge and recommendation, . My wife and I have visited the UK many times- I was born there, but we saw so many places which were new to us. Thank you Odyssey!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ian Sanderson

Excellent selection and diversity from different types of events. We saw wonderful things that would not have occurred to me on my own.

What time zone is Scotland in?

Scotland has a single time zone , Greenwich mean time. The nation observes daylight saving time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

Is tipping customary?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you make sure you tip an appropriate amount for services, as is the case throughout much of Europe. It’s customary to tip 10-15% of the bill at restaurants, or 1 to 3 GBP at a more casual establishment. It’s polite to round a bill up to the nearest whole figure or leave the change when buying drinks. It’s also customary to tip 10% in taxis, and leave a note or two with hotel porters and concierges.

What is the internet service like in Scotland?

Internet access is easily accessible, and most hotels and many cafes will be able to offer it.

However, when visiting the remotest parts of Scotland the service maybe non existent or of a poor or low quality until you reach more built up areas.

Can I use my mobile phone in Scotland?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Scotland. Many providers will offer a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Should I visit Loch Ness while I'm in Scotland?

This huge freshwater loch is probably one of the most famous bodies of water in the world, largely due to the myth of the monster that may dwell within its dark waters. Loch Ness is found within the Great Glen in the Scottish Highlands, around 20 minutes’ drive from Inverness, and 3,5 drive from Edinburgh. We’d say that you need at least half a day to see the major highlights, but ideally you would allocate a whole day which will give you time to see most of the attractions as well as circumnavigate the whole loch.

Which experiences are best for tours in Shetland islands?

There are plenty of things to do in Shetland. The islands have some of the most incredible landscapes in the UK and a Viking heritage. Odysseys Scottish Islands and Shetland small group tour, we. will view the wild, untamed scenery of Shetland , where we may catch a glimpse of some of the islands’ tiny ponies, colonies of sea birds, and other wildlife. We trace the ancient Celtic and Viking influences on the Shetland Island peoples and their language, as we visit some of the remote villages in our search for historical treasures. We will also visit the Shetland island museum in Lerwick , the harbour of Scalloway, the Sunburgh Head, and Jarlshof, where the museum explains the sprawling sea-front ruins spanning 3,000 years.

The Shetlands are just over 300 kilometres from the Norwegian coast and were under Norse rule until 1469. About 14 of the hundred or so islands in the Shetland Island group are occupied and these cliff-edged islands now form the northernmost part of Scotland. Shetlanders have a distinctive dialect derived from their long connection with Norway and nowhere on the islands is more than 8 kilometres from the sea, so that fishing and salmon farming still provide a major contribution to the economy. However, North Sea Oil has been the major source of recent revenue. Shetland too boasts some of Britain’s most stunning coastal scenery, awesome colonies of sea birds, abundant marine life, and a rich pre-history.

Which experiences are best for tours in Orkney islands?

On Odysseys small group tour to Scotland that includes the Orkneys , we will experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the British Isles. On the Orkney mainland we learn on our Orkney tour about some of the prehistoric, Celtic, and Viking influences on the island peoples, visit some of the picturesque small towns and villages, and catch a glimpse of some of the island’s seals, otters, and colonies of sea birds while we search for historical treasures in its great collection of ancient sites. After lunch the Orkney tour visits the Standing Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodga, and the prehistoric village of Skara Brae . We will also learn about the wartime history of the island as we view the Churchill Barriers and Italian Chapel, the St Magnus Cathedral.

Both Orkney and Shetland have close links to the Nordic countries through language, lifestyle, and history, despite the fact that the Orkney Islands are within 10 kilometres of mainland Scotland. The Orkney isles differs from the Shetland Isle in that it has flat and undulating islands with rich soil, which makes the grass green and nurtures summer crops of grain. Shetlanders are fishermen with farms while Orcadians are farmers with boats. Orkney is, however, still known for its dramatic coastal scenery, abundant marine bird life, and islands which contain the densest concentration of prehistoric and ancient sites in Britain, testifying to their long history of settlement. Eighteen of the 67 Orkney Island are inhabited.

On the second day on Orkney small group tours , we will have a morning guided tour of Kirkwall, and a visit to Bishop’s and Early’s Palaces, before leaving you the afternoon to further explore Orkney Island.

Responsible Travel Tips for Scotland

  • If sightseeing in rural areas, remember to be respectful of residents and locals. As well as being tourist attractions, these are peoples’ homes!
  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice, a bit of Gaelic perhaps.. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language and it’s slang, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of euros in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.

Small Group Tour of Scotland: A Perfect 7-Day Itinerary 2024

This tour of Scotland is an activity level 4. Click here for terms, conditions, and cancelation policies.

*Subject to change. Updated January 9, 2024.

October 21, Monday Day 1:

Welcome to Edinburgh and the start of your Small Group Tour of Scotland! I’ll pick you up at the airport and take you to our hotel. Your room will be ready when you get there if you wanna take a nap or freshen up. The rest of the day is all yours.

Meet in the hotel lobby to walk over to The Devil’s Advocate for our Welcome Dinner! Dinner and a drink are on me!

October 22, Tuesday Day 2:

After breakfast (which is included all week), we’ll be heading to the Royal Mile.

Starting at the top, we’ll spend our morning at Edinburgh Castle . Everyone will get an audio guide and I will set you all free to tour at your own speed. We’ll meet back up for Afternoon Tea (included) in the castle restaurant.

Heading down the hill to the bottom of the Royal Mile, next up is Holyrood House Palace. Everyone will have an audio guide again to take in the Palace at their own speed.

The rest of the day is free for your own plans. Personalized suggestions can be made for what to do with your time.

October 23, Wednesday Day 3:

An optional early morning hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat for sunrise is available for anyone interested. We’ll meet up in the lobby later to head out for sightseeing and an Instagram-worthy photo tour of Edinburgh.

Lunch is at your own expense but I can make several suggestions. The evening will be at your leisure.

Add on Excursion: Consider adding on an exceptional evening at The Scotch Whisky Experience. We’ll be heading over to the Scotch Whisky Experience for a whisky pairing dinner after taking their tour of how whisky is made. This will be a very fun night!

October 24, Thursday Day 4:

We’ll be heading out early for a full day on a private tour with Rabbie’s (my favorite tour company…ever).

From their website:

“You leave the cobbled streets of Edinburgh and travel past Linlithgow Palace and Stirling Castle.

This region is soaked in history, so sit back and relax as your driver-guide entertains you with the tales of Mary Queen of Scots, William Wallace, and Scottish folklore.

If you keep a lookout, you can catch a glimpse of the Kelpies. These 30-metre tall horse head sculptures need to be seen to be believed.

Your driver-guide takes you to their favourite stop within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park where you can grab coffee and enjoy the views.

After this stop, it’s time to get your camera ready. Because as you travel north into the Highlands, the landscapes suddenly become more provocative.

Shimmering lochs, rugged mountains, forest filled glens: it’s all so beautiful that it’s easy to forget these were once battlegrounds for fiercely territorial Highland clans.

You stop in Glencoe, one of the most famous natural landmarks in all of Scotland. This beautiful area boasts steep slopes and photogenic peaks. Your driver-guide may reveal to you the tragic tale that’s haunted this valley for over 300 years.

You then enter the glacial valley known as the Great Glen and pass under the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain.

After this visual feast of mighty inclines, you arrive in Fort Augustus on the banks of Loch Ness. At 23 miles long and over 700ft deep, Loch Ness is the largest loch by volume in Scotland.

You have around one hour and a half here. You can search for the infamous monster on a relaxing boat cruise,* wander around the shores of the loch at your own pace, and grab a bite to eat.

Meals will be at your own expense at various stops throughout the day.

October 25, Friday Day 5:

Another fabulous day out on a private tour with Rabbie’s…this time we will focus on Outlander filming locations. Rest assured though, if you aren’t an Outlander fan…you’re still going to LOVE this tour. I’ve never seen an episode of the show but I’ve been on this tour three times and its incredible!!

“You leave Edinburgh and begin following the trail of film locations featured in the Outlander TV Series. First, we travel to the place that needs no introduction: Midhope Castle, known as Jamie’s lovely home Lallybroch.

We then journey through the charming countryside to Blackness Castle. It’s an impressive fortress that’s known as the ‘ship that never sailed’ because it resembles a giant stone boat. You have time to walk along the ramparts and explore the fictional headquarters of Jack Randall.

The next stop is Linlithgow Palace, otherwise known as Wentworth Prison.

Unfortunately, the palace is undergoing some refurbishment and you can’t explore the interior. But you’re still able to admire the structure and enjoy the surrounding settings.

Heading north, we journey past Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument to Doune Castle, or as it’s called in Outlander, Castle Leoch. This formidable building represents home to Colum Mackenzie and his clan in the 18th-century episodes.

Travel back in time once more as your driver guide takes you to Culross. This virtually unchanged 16th-century village overlooks the sea and poses as the fictional town of Cranesmuir.

From there, we head back to Edinburgh, where we arrive in the late afternoon.”

Lunch will be at your own expense at various stops throughout the day.

After our day trip, we’ll go to the Old Chain Pier Restaurant for our Farewell Dinner, where we can exchange stories and pictures from our epic stay in Edinburgh! Dinner and a drink are included with my gratitude to you for letting me show you one of my favorite cities in the world.

October 26, Saturday Day 6:

This morning, we’ll be packing up and heading out of Edinburgh. We’ll be making our way to Waverley Station to start our journey north. We’ll then settle in on the train for a four hour long journey watching the gorgeous countryside go by as we head into the Highlands.

Upon arrival, we’ll drop our luggage off at the hotel and I’ll take you on a walking tour of Inverness before giving you the rest of the evening with plenty of recommendations for dinner and things to do.

October 27, Sunday Day 7:

Today, we’ll be going over the sea to Skye (sorry I couldn’t help myself with another epic tour with Rabbies.)

“After an early start, you leave the city and travel along the Great Glen Fault Line toward Loch Ness. You’ll continue through dramatic Highland scenery to the west coast and Eilean Donan Castle.

The moment you’ve been waiting for, because it’s over the sea and onto the Isle of Skye. You travel up the island’s east coast through the stunning Red Cuillin Mountains to Sligachan, where you stop for a photo of the clear mountain waters.

You’ll explore some of the most famous scenery of the island at the Trotternish

Peninsula. The Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock, and the Quiraing are all unforgettably beautiful.

You venture to Kyleakin for a chance to view the dramatic ruin of Castle Moil or the Skye Bridge and Eilean Ban. Traveling over the bridge, you journey back to Inverness. The route you take back is different from the morning, so you get even more opportunities to enjoy the Highland scenery.

This will be a long but PHENOMENAL day. Meals will be at your own expense at various stops throughout the day.

October 28, Monday Day 8:

Sadly, we will all go our separate ways today (unless you’re coming with me to Ireland ! ) but I can point you in the right direction if you’re going to the airport or back to the train station to go back to Edinburgh and beyond.

Slàinte Mhath (cheers) and safe travels as you head home! Until we meet again!

How to Plan the Perfect Scotland Vacation

From fairy-tale castles to charming small towns, the Scottish countryside is every bit as spectacular as you've heard.

Best Times to Go to Scotland

Best things to do in scotland.

  • Getting to the Scottish Highlands

Where to Stay in Scotland

With its stately castles , glass-like lochs, and voluptuous glens, Scotland has always been a showstopper. The country's magic extends from its quaint small towns to the snow-capped peaks of its romantic, rugged Highlands to its dynamic modern cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh. It's home to some of the best national parks in the U.K. and more than 900 offshore islands with extraordinary wildlife like regal red stags, majestic golden eagles, humpback whales, and massive salmon (not to mention the fabled inhabitant of Loch Ness, too).

The raw, poetic beauty of this ancient land — formerly known as Caledonia — is difficult to overstate. If you're hoping to head to the U.K.'s ravishing northern nation, read on for our guide to planning the perfect Scotland vacation.

The bad news is that, like the rest of the U.K., Scotland's weather is far from reliable, even at the height of summer. But as long as you're prepared to accept that and pack a raincoat for the odd shower or two, then you'll be fine from May to September. The smart money is on visiting in June and the first two weeks of July, when Scotland basks in seemingly endless summer evenings (the sun doesn't set until 11 p.m. in some parts of the Highlands) and the British school holidays have not yet begun, so prices remain low.

For winter travelers, Scotland has the U.K.'s best ski resort at Cairngorm Mountain , while the capital, Edinburgh, hosts one of the world's biggest New Year's Eve parties, Hogmanay .

If you like the great outdoors, you'll love Scotland. It's an ideal place for hiking, biking, and generally embracing the wildly beautiful landscape. You can summit magnificent Ben Nevis in a day (the tallest mountain in the U.K., at 4,413 feet), take a ferry out to explore the Hebrides archipelago and its stunning white-sand beaches, tour scores of castles, including the Queen's favorite holiday home, Balmoral (open to the public every April through July), and dive into a quirky food scene encompassing dishes like haggis (an offal and oatmeal combo, which tastes significantly better than it sounds), deep-fried mars bars, and juicy scallops, langoustines, and mussels.

Scotland is also a mecca for both golfers ( St. Andrews Old Course is the headline act) and whisky lovers , with some of the world's best distilleries available to tour, including Johnnie Walker on Edinburgh's lively Princes Street, Glenlivet near pretty Ballindalloch, and the legendary Macallan on a sprawling country estate in nearby Aberlour.

If you enjoy driving, you'll find some of the U.K.'s emptiest, most dramatic roads here, too, (as driven by James Bond in "Skyfall"), including the latest official addition, the North Coast 500 , an action-packed 500-mile route (516 to be exact) featuring mind-boggling coastal scenery, jaw-dropping beaches, rolling hillside, quaint fishing villages, and multiple hidden gems.

And if you prefer your challenges on foot, check out the magnificent West Highland Way , the country's best-loved long-distance walking route. Snaking its way from Milngavie to Fort William, it covers some of Scotland's finest scenery over 96 miles and is normally completed from south to north.

Meanwhile, history buffs will also be agog on any visit to Scotland, thanks to its 3,000-plus castles ( Castle Sween in Argyll is the oldest, dating back to the 1100s), as well as plenty to check out in the winding wynds (narrow lanes) and twisted staircases of Edinburgh's enchanting Old Town. ( Edinburgh Castle , towering over the city, is arguably the grandest in the country, too.)

If you can, make time to visit Perth, the former Scottish capital where kings were crowned on the Stone of Destiny and infamous Glen Coe, a beautiful valley full of waterfalls and deer, also known for the brutal clan massacre of 1692 (which inspired the Red Wedding in George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones ).

Where are the Scottish Highlands — and what is the best way to get there?

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

The clue is in its name: the Highlands are the mountainous upper half of Scotland, covering 10,000 square miles of picturesque scenery. The region's lively capital is Inverness , which sits centrally and is a superb base from which to explore, while other highlights include mysterious, misty Loch Ness, majestic Cairngorms National Park , and idyllic Isle of Skye , which has been connected to the mainland via a road bridge since 1995.

The easiest way to reach the Highlands is to fly into Inverness Airport from London or elsewhere in the U.K., or rent a car and drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh. However, the way to arrive in style is on the Caledonian Sleeper train from London Euston, a chugging time machine where you can fall asleep to the sounds of black cabs and bustle of the British capital and wake up among the red deer and magical glens of the Highlands. Regularly nominated as one of the world's best train journeys , the scenery gets truly spectacular after Fort William, as the route skirts a dramatic chain of lochs before descending into lush glens and crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct made famous by the Harry Potter films. For the ultimate Hogwarts experience, steam locomotives work this route during the summer months, so check in advance for these special departures.

The major cities have an abundance of hotels for every budget, headlined by Glasgow's Kimpton Blythswood Square , a boutique property in the former headquarters of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club, and The Dunstane Houses in Edinburgh, a pair of beautifully renovated 19th-century townhouses.

Scotland arguably does traditional country house hotels and rustic lodges better than anywhere else in the world, with Fife Arms in Braemar and Gleneagles in Perthshire being particular treats (the latter, nicknamed the "Glorious Playground" boasts three championship golf courses, its own dedicated train station, and the only restaurant in the country with two Michelin stars).

Scotland is, of course, peppered with castles, and many have been converted into hotels and B&Bs in recent years, with some of the better fortified accommodation options including Glenapp Castle in Ayrshire, Inverlochy Castle in Fort William, Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry, and Stonefield Castle Hotel on Loch Fyne.

Wherever you stay, you'll get a warm welcome — not to mention a hot bowl of Scottish porridge or a plate of bacon, eggs, and haggis to start the day in a spectacularly scenic country.

Brendan Vacations Offers Immersive and Culturally Enriching Scotland Tours Filled with History, Heritage, and Countless Scenic Wonders

Scotland is a popular destination for leisure group travelers, offering an enticing combination of ancient castles to tour, spectacular landscapes, and cultural heritage. Scotland’s iconic golf courses and exceptional spirits are also significant draws for vacationers.

According to Phocuswright, experiences are the central reason for leisure travel. For travelers seeking memorable experiences and local connections in Scotland, Brendan Vacations offers a variety of expertly crafted tours in Scotland designed to showcase the country’s historic past, rich cultural traditions, and hidden treasures.

Brendan Vacations’ sole focus is travel in Scotland and Ireland. The company offers a variety of travel styles for group travel planners, from fully-guided coach tour vacations to customizable private group chauffeur trips. During its 50 years of operations, Brendan Vacations has developed long-standing relationships with its trusted Scotland suppliers and partners. The company’s trip planners combine their years of extensive experience with deep insider knowledge to create memorable itineraries and personally customized vacations in Scotland . These include specialty itineraries, such as those with an emphasis on Scotland’s famed golf courses, renowned spirits, or notable film locations in the award-winning Outlander television series.

Each day brings new adventures and exceptional experiences on Brendan Vacations Scotland tours. While the company’s Scotland itineraries include well-known sites like Edinburgh Castle and Loch Lomond, Brendan’s travel planners also incorporate activities that enable vacationers to see these iconic places in a unique way. These might include walking tours with locals, special culinary explorations, and visits to hidden gems. Brendan Vacations artfully combines these immersive experiences with Scotland’s fascinating history and stunning scenery, weaving a rich tapestry that provides lasting memories and connects guests with an authentic sense of place.

Exploring Edinburgh’s Multi-Faceted Allure on Scotland Tours

Our 11-day tour of Scotland started in Edinburgh , allowing us to spend plenty of time exploring Scotland’s capital city. The Market Street Hotel provided a perfect home base for sightseeing in the city’s Old Town and New Town areas. We took an Edinburgh City Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tour to get our bearings and see many of the city’s attractions. The excursion provided convenient transportation to numerous sights, including the historic Holyrood Palace .

Tours with local guides were some of our most memorable experiences in Edinburgh. On our walking tour of the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle , our superb local guide took us to hidden gems along the well-traveled route and took us back in time through her stories. Exploring Edinburgh Castle with our guide was one of the highlights of our Scotland tour, and skipping the lines was an added plus. On another of our tours in Scotland, we explored Edinburgh’s vibrant culinary scene with a local guide who escorted us to pre-reserved tables at superb venues throughout the city. The regionally-produced Scottish cuisines and spirits we sampled were some of the best of our trip.

Whisky is Scotland’s national drink, and I learned more about the country’s famed spirits at distilleries and venues on our journey. Edinburgh’s educational and entertaining Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour Experience proved to be a great place to start. Through sessions and tastings led by an expert guide, I discovered Scotch whisky’s many flavors and the finely-honed craft involved in producing these celebrated libations.

Strolling Through History In Ancient Castles And St Andrews

While our time in Edinburgh was terrific, we were excited to head on to St Andrews – the “home of golf.” St Andrews is a bucket-list destination for golfers, and it’s a top spot for history lovers as well. On a superb walking tour of St Andrews Links’ iconic Old Course , our guide brought the stories and legends of these fabled fairways to life.

Centuries-old St Andrews was a major pilgrimage destination, and the town is also home to Scotland’s oldest university. We took a walking tour of St Andrews with a knowledgeable local guide, strolling through history as we visited the University of St Andrews , the ruins of St Andrews Castle and St Andrews Cathedral , and other important sites. We also hiked along lovely West Sands Beach , which was the setting for the opening scenes in Chariots of Fire . Rufflets St Andrews , an idyllic family-owned country house hotel, provided a restful retreat on our journey.

Experiencing tours of Scotland’s magnificent castles was high on our list, and our itinerary featured a number of these historic gems. As fans of the popular Outlander drama series, we enjoyed taking a self-guided tour of 14 th -century Doune Castle , which served as the filming location for the show’s Castle Leoch episodes. Legendary Stirling Castle was once home to Scotland’s kings and queens, and it’s been beautifully restored. We spent hours touring this magnificent castle, walking the walls, and viewing its many outstanding exhibits. Later that day, we felt like royalty staying at the grand Atholl Palace Hotel , a baronial castle-style property set in the quaint town of Pitlochry.

Scotland Tours Showcase The Scottish Highlands

Our Brendan Vacations itinerary included a number of immersive activities and adventures in the Scottish Highlands, and many of these were our favorite Scotland tour experiences. We took an exciting multi-hour Highland mountain safari with an expert guide, who took us from the valley floor high into the misty ridges for a delicious picnic lunch and wilderness hike. The scenery was awe-inspiring, and we spotted herds of red deer, soaring golden eagles, and hillsides filled with blooming heather along the way. On another day, we visited the windswept moors of Culloden Battlefield and learned about the final stand of the Jacobite Rising.

Culturally rich Inverness served as our home base for several nights while exploring various areas around the Scottish Highlands. Our extensive tour of Scotland’s enchanting Isle of Skye was one of the most memorable excursions of our trip. Vacationers could easily spend several days in this scenic wonderland filled with dazzling waterfalls, breathtaking vistas, jagged peaks, dramatic cliffs, and charming seaside houses painted in pastel hues. Eilean Donan Castle is equally picturesque, and we stopped there twice on our Isle of Skye tour. This stunning gem looks like something straight out of a fairy tale, and it’s said to be one of the world’s most photographed castles. We also paused along the banks of Loch Ness to view the ruins of Urquhart Castle while keeping an eye out for Nessie – the loch’s famous monster.

Some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery can be seen along the route we took from Inverness to Loch Lomond. Highlights include Ben Nevis , Britain’s highest mountain, and the broodingly beautiful mountains of Glencoe . We stopped for a moment there to marvel at the dramatic landscapes and paid quiet tribute to the Clan MacDonald members who lost their lives there in the tragic 1692 massacre. Then it was on to Loch Lomond , where we took a scenic cruise and cycled along the loch’s bonnie banks.

Discovering Glasgow’s Many Attractions

Glasgow is filled with impressive cultural attractions, and we looked onward to spending time there on our Scotland trip. The vibrant city is home to some of Scotland’s best museums and art galleries, including the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery . Our Glasgow Hop On, Hop Off Bus Tour gave us an excellent overview of the city and provided easy transportation to many major sites.

I was most surprised by the city’s beautiful architecture and the amazing urban street art throughout Glasgow’s city center. Our Brendan Vacations itinerary included an excellent urban art-focused walking tour along Glasgow’s City Centre Mural Trail . Our expert local guide led us to some of her favorite murals by various artists, including Rogue-One, Smug, Art Pistol, and Ejek. The murals are stunning, and we enjoyed learning about the artists involved in each of the colorful installations.

Scotland Tours: Creating Authentic Experiences And Exceeding Expectations

Today’s travelers want to connect with the places they visit in a meaningful way. Brendan Vacations’ Scotland tours offer the kinds of enriching experiences leisure group travelers crave. The company’s expert team is able to create customized itineraries tailored to the interests of all types of leisure groups, using a variety of available travel styles to provide the right fit.

While Scotland’s castles and other attractions were the highlights we looked forward to before the trip, it was the activities that involved connecting with locals that we enjoyed most. For instance, the 84-mile ride on the world-famous Jacobite Steam Train was a bucket-list journey for us. Featured as the ‘Hogwarts Express’ in Harry Potter films, the scenic train trip has been called one of the world’s “greatest railway journeys.” While we loved the entire trip – including crossing the iconic Glenfinnan viaduct , one of the main high points turned out to be our in-depth conversations with locals. Interestingly enough, it’s the people we met and the landscapes we saw along the way that have stayed in our minds long after our Scotland tour was over. Our trip also included a few “wow” moments, such as an elaborate picnic on our cycling excursion along the shores of Loch Lomond.

Brendan Vacations’ long-lasting relationships with its Scottish suppliers resulted in travel experiences that exceeded our expectations. This was particularly true with some of our lodging stays. The culinary experiences at Ness Walk Hotel in Inverness were exceptional, and the staff went out of their way to provide personalized, attentive service. The property caters to leisure groups, and we spoke with numerous guests who were thrilled with their experience. Cameron House on Loch Lomond also provided an extraordinarily memorable stay, offering superb cuisine, luxurious accommodations, and a wide variety of activities and adventures.

It was a pleasure working with Brendan Vacations’ travel specialists to custom-build our ideal Scotland itinerary with a blend of appealing destinations, experiences, and accommodations. The company’s mantra is “Taking You Personally,” and it’s an excellent description of our overall experience.

It’s rare for me to come away from a trip saying, “I wouldn’t change a thing.” As we toasted to our Scotland travels at the stunning Marine North Berwick hotel on the final evening of our tour, those were the words I used, to sum up our journey. For our interests and the amount of time we had available in Scotland, it was the perfect trip.
