Metaphors for Love

In literature, music, and popular culture, love is often used as a metaphor , a  trope  or  figure of speech  in which an implied comparison is made between two unlike things that actually have something in common. For example, when Neil Young sings, "Love is a rose," the word "rose" is the vehicle for the term "love," the tenor.

Or as Milan Kundera wrote in "The Unbearable Lightness of Being,"

"I have said before that metaphors are dangerous. Love begins with a metaphor."

He might have added that love sometimes ends with a metaphor as well. Like the experience of love itself, metaphors make connections. So it's no surprise that love has been imagined, examined, and remembered through a wide variety of figurative comparisons, as the quotes below show.

Love as a Fruit or Plant

As the collection of passages in this and the below sections demonstrate, love has been compared to everything from a plant to a truck. The metaphors in this collection are anything but conventional.

"Love is a fruit, in season at all times and within the reach of every hand. Anyone may gather it and no limit is set." – Mother Teresa, "No Greater Love"
"I look at you and wham, I'm head over heels. I guess that love is a banana peel. I feel so bad and yet I'm feeling so well. I slipped, I stumbled, I fell" – Ben Weisman and Fred Wise, "I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell," sung by Elvis Presley in the film "Wild in the Country"
"Love is a spice with many tastes—a dizzying array of textures and moments." – Wayne Knight as Newman in the final episode of "Seinfeld"
"Now that you're gone I can see That love is a garden if you let it go. It fades away before you know, And love is a garden—it needs help to grow. – Jewel and Shaye Smith, "Love Is a Garden"
"Love is a plant of the most tender kind, That shrinks and shakes with every ruffling wind" – George Granville, "The British Enchanters"

As a Phenomenon of Nature

Washington Irving  compared love to "the rosy cloud in the morning of life," but many others have likened love to various phenomena of nature from lightning to stars and fire, as the quotes in this section demonstrate.

"Oh, love is a journey with water and stars, with drowning air and storms of flour; love is a clash of lightnings, two bodies subdued by one honey." – Pablo Neruda, "Sonnet 12"
"[Love] is an ever-fixed mark That looks on tempests and is never shaken; It is the star to every wandering bark, Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken." – William Shakespeare, "Sonnet 116"
"Love is a fire. It burns everyone. It disfigures everyone. It is the world's excuse for being ugly." – Leonard Cohen, "The Energy of Slaves"
"Love's fire, if it once goes out, is hard to kindle." – German proverb

Kurt Vonnegut ' called love "a hawk with velvet claws," but many singers, writers, authors, and figures in popular culture have compared love to various animals, including dogs, birds, and even a crocodile.

"Love is a dog from hell." – Charles Bukowski, "Love Is a Dog From Hell"
"Love's wing moults when caged and captured, Only free he soars enraptured." – Thomas Campbell, "Love's Philosophy"
Love is a crocodile in the river of desire. – Bhartṛhari, "Śatakatraya"
"Happiness is the china shop; love is the bull." – H.L. Mencken, "A Little Book in C Major"

And Even a Disease

Love has been compared to many things, but surprisingly, some have likened it to a disease, as the eclectic mix of quotes shows in this final section.

"They say it is better to travel than to arrive. It's not been my experience, at least. The journey of love has been rather a lacerating, if well-worth-it, journey." – D.H. Lawrence, "Fantasia of the Unconscious"
"Love is a truck and an open road, Somewhere to start and a place to go." – Mojave 3, "Truck Driving Man"
"They say love is a two-way street. But I don't believe it, because the one I've been on for the last two years was a dirt road." – Terry McMillan, "Waiting to Exhale"
"Love is the master key that unlocks the gates of happiness, of hatred, of jealousy, and most easily of all, the gate of fear ." – Oliver Wendell Holmes, "A Moral Antipathy"
"Love is a beggar, most importunate, Uncalled he comes and makes his dear demands" – Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, "Love Is a Beggar"
"I thought love would be my cure But now it's my disease." – Alicia Keyes, "Love Is My Disease"
"Is it natural for a man to fall in love? Love is a disease and disease knows no laws. – Ivan Turgenev, "Diary of a Superfluous Man"

Frequently Asked Questions

What is another word for love .

Where do we begin? Love is often classified and categorized in terms of what type of relationship is being discussed, such as with terms like romantic love and platonic love , or with fancier words like eros or agape .

People who love each other romantically are said to be in love . Instantaneous love is called love at first sight .

Love is often described in terms of how serious or deep it is, as in terms like true love and unconditional love , or whether it’s reciprocated, as in unrequited love .

Synonyms for love that can imply varying levels of intensity or intimacy include fondness , affection , devotion , and adoration .

Love is also used as a noun in the sense of a person you love or have loved romantically, as in She was my first love or It’s a story of two loves reunited . The word lover is sometimes used in the same way, but this typically implies a sexual relationship. The word love is also often used in the context of sex in euphemisms like make love .

In more general contexts, we call the people we love loved ones . You might call someone my love as a term of endearment, much like my dear or my darling . Someone who is well loved is often described as beloved .

As a verb, there are a few synonyms that are sometimes used for love , such as adore , admire , cherish , and even treasure . But many words don’t really capture the fullness and depth of what love can mean.

For that, we usually look to the poets.

Among the wisest said that Love is a battlefield . Others have said that Love is all you need ( all you need is love ). If you’ve been to a lot of weddings, you’ve heard that love is patient , love is kind — love never fails . Shakespeare didn’t say that Love is a many splendored thing , but he did say that Love sought is good, but given unsought is better .

What is a stronger word for love ?

Synonyms for love tend to capture only some aspects or elements of love .

The verb adore means to feel intense love for someone—and adoration can be mutual.

Still, despite how common the word is, and how easily it gets tossed around, love is often the strongest word you can use. I love you may be a set phrase, but there really is no equal for it. Perhaps the strongest way to use the word love is not just to say it, but to prove you mean it by showing it.

Of course, love is also commonly used as a way of saying you really like something, as in I love your shoes! In this case, love is the stronger word. Perhaps an even stronger way to say this is by avoiding a love/like construction altogether. For example, instead of saying I love your shoes , you could say Your shoes are fabulous! or Your shoes are EVERYTHING! or however you want to express how amazing they are.

Pop-Up Catechesis: Praying the Acts of Faith, Hope, and Love

Joe Paprocki Prayer/Guided Reflections

Pop-Up Catechesis with Joe Paprocki

In the movie Ghost , Sam (Patrick Swayze) never says the words, “I love you” to Molly (Demi Moore), instead opting for the response, “Ditto.” His inability to say the words, “I love you,” cause Molly to question Sam’s commitment to their relationship. She rightly wants him to say the words as an action that confirms his commitment to her. The truth is, some words we speak are “efficacious,” which means that speaking the words achieves the desired effect that the words themselves represent. Saying, “I do,” at a wedding seals the marriage relationship. Saying, “I’m sorry,” enables forgiveness to happen. Saying, “I love you,” conveys love to another person. As Catholics, we voice prayers that are referred to as “Acts,” meaning that they are efficacious prayers. By praying an Act of Faith, Hope, or Love, we are professing or making manifest our faith, hope, and love.

Love Is Blind ’s Chelsea Blackwell Shares 'Amazing Progress' in Her Weight Loss Journey: 'I Love My Body'

“I feel better. My skin feels better, I look better and I'm able to deliver my best possible self to everyone else around me," the reality star said

Vanessa Etienne is an Emerging Content Writer-Reporter for PEOPLE.

Adam Rose/Netflix

Love Is Blind season 6 star Chelsea Blackwell is opening up about her recent weight loss journey.

On April 2, the 31-year-old posted a TikTok video explaining that she’s gotten a lot of DMs about her health so she decided to offer some tips to how she’s made “amazing progress” recently.

"I love my body," she began the video. "I've never been a small girl my entire life, and I'm okay with that. Why I decided to change what I was doing was because I wasn't feeling healthy. I wasn't feeling strong. It was affecting my mental health and it was affecting my energy levels."

Noting that she’s not a nutritionist, Blackwell said she started intermittent fasting, juicing, drinking a lot more water, getting better sleep and staying active.

"When I eat, I stick to as many fruits and vegetables as possible," she explained. "I have a lot of protein. Protein is what I try to have all my meals based on… That's my diet normally. When I eat better, I feel better. I feel more focused. I feel clearer. I can think better."

Blackwell added that she’s “not a huge gym girl” but she tries to get her body moving every day, saying that she’s also used influencer Whitney Simmons ’ fitness app.

"The main key component to something I think resulted in my weight loss is walking," she explained. "I will walk 45 minutes a day. It's really my time to meditate and listen to podcasts. That's my ‘me time' and it makes me happy."

The reality star said she hasn’t lost “that much” weight, but she’s simply fueling her body with better things and it’s made her look and feel better.

“I’m not hard on myself, by any means. But I feel better," she said in the clip. "My skin feels better, I look better and I'm able to deliver my best possible self to everyone else around me."

This isn’t the first time Blackwell has opened up about her overall health.

In February, she revealed that she started therapy after filming Love Is Blind and the practice has transformed her life.

"I've never seeked [sic] a therapist before but man oh man, I feel everyone could benefit from having an unbiased opinion," she wrote on her Instagram Stories.

"I had a ton of inner issues I needed to debunk and my life, my mindset, my heart has completely changed," she continued. "I thought I loved myself before but I have never felt THIS kind of love."

To someone who said they noticed a new "glow" about her now that she wasn't on the show, Blackwell wrote: "The most special compliment. The woman I am today has come very far from the woman on the show and I'm very proud of my growth."
