Dilli Haat is where the culture of all states come together under one open-air complex. It’s where you can buy state known handicraft items from across the country at reasonable prices. It allows local artisans and craftsmen to present, market and sell their handicraft items.

It has a massive food court which has counters from all the different states of the country. From Rajasthan’s Gatte ki sabzi to Bengal’s Fish, you will get it all. Not just that, you will also be experiencing some cultural activities that happen here every now and then.

Created with the thought of preserving and displaying the Indian Culture, Dilli Haat is a go-to place for every kind of traveller to experience the culture and tradition of 29 states under one roof.

Apart from a few shops that are permanent here, most shops here are on a bi-weekly rotational basis at a nominal fee of Rs.100 per day and hence you will find new vendors every time you visit it.

Talk to the local artisans from across the country, understand their skills, eat, shop, and participate in the various activities and spend a wonderful day here. A great place to buy souvenirs but do remember to bargain and get yourself the item at a reasonable price. Items start here as low as Rs.50.

Do Note: There are 3 Dilli Haats in New Delhi. However, the information mentioned here is about Dilli Haat INA.

The other two Dilli Haats, namely Dilli Haat Pitampura and Dilli Haat Janakpuri were only constructed recently and they are not as expansive and have markets and activities only during certain festivals such as Teej, Rakhi, Diwali, Karwa Chauth etc.

Also, do not be mistaken for shops that are named as Dilli Haat at various locations in Delhi.

History of Dilli Haat

Dilli Haat INA was constructed in the early 90s and was jointly formed by Delhi Tourism Department, Government of Delhi, Ministry of Textiles and Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. The other Dilli Haats were constructed in the early 21st century. Small developments like the construction of a food court, wheelchair access, a fully functional bathroom happened over the years.

Architecture of Dilli Haat INA

When you walk into Dilli Haat, you will be mesmerized to see an entire village like set up created using red stone and bricks. It is spread across 6 acres of land. The architecture is very common to the typical North Indian Style houses and also strikes a close resemblance to the bazaars of Jaipur. Each of these shops is formed in the shape of a small cottage with stone roof.

The items range from colourful Chikankari Kurtis to Kolhapuri Chappals and in all, it gives a very colourful, vibrant and ethnic vibe to the entire place. There are various flowers and shrubs that give it a very pleasant and harmonious look. There is also a small stage which is supported by a beautifully done graffiti wall and makes it a good spot to take photographs.

1. Shopping at Dilli Haat : Dilli Haat is every shopper’s paradise. There is so much that you can even be confused as to what to buy from Dilli Haat.

You can shop a range of items including but not limited to ethnic wear, shawls, jewellery, wall decor, ceramic and pottery crockery, furniture, lanterns, paintings and sculptures, antiques, organic food products, essential oils and so much more.

Since these handicraft items come directly from the craftsman, it not only ensures that the craftsman is getting paid better but you also get the product at a better price as compared to handicraft emporiums.

Do note that there is only one ATM at the entrance and the shopkeepers do not keep a card machine, so it is advisable to carry liquid cash.

2. Food Parade at Dilli Haat : See India get united with food stalls from different states of the country. If you are wondering what should you eat in Dilli Haat, we recommend ditching your regular staple and trying something which would be new for your palette. From Sikkim’s famous Momo to Nagaland’s Thukpa there is so much for you to taste and try.

Do not expect a luxurious restaurant, but rather a more comfortable and cosy outdoor environment.

3. Tarot Card Reading at Dilli Haat : There is a stall where you will usually find a professional tarot card reader who can predict your future and suggest you changes that you can make in your life accordingly.

4. Get Hand Mehendi and Hair Braided at Dilli Haat : This one is extremely famous with young girls and ladies. As soon as you enter the complex of Dilli Haat, you will find women sitting with threads, ready to braid your hair, or with their Mehendi cones to adorn your hand with beautiful designs.

5. Cultural Activities : One can be taken by surprise with various unplanned cultural activities happening at Dilli Haat such as a flash mob or a nukkad natak, most of which are trying to convey a social message.

1. Lodhi Garden : Located only 3 km from Dilli Haat is the Lodhi Garden. The park boasts of an open gym and a jogger’s track which makes exercising out in nature both peaceful and satisfying.

Sarojini Nagar is also a haven for street-style accessories like jhumkas, neckpieces, scarves and even footwears. One can also find beautiful and artistic home decor items. Bargaining is the key to shopping at Sarojini Nagar. If you are hungry, there are various eateries like Haldirams, McDonald's, Sagar Ratna, Cafe Coffee Day and many more.

3. Hauz Khas Village : The perfect place to take a stroll around nature, see deers, sit by the lake and catch picturesque images at the fort, and grab a bite to eat is Hauz Khas Village. It is located at a distance of 5 km from Dilli Haat. The village boasts of designer showrooms, antique shops, pubs, cafes and the Hauz Khas Fort .

The fort is very popular amongst college students for providing a splendid view of the lake and offering the perfect space for creativity to blossom. You will often find youth playing the guitar or trying their hands on the camera or friends simply sitting and having a great time.

4. Safdarjung Tomb : As the name suggests, this historical monument is the mausoleum of Nawab Safdarjung and is located only 1.5 km from Dilli Haat. It is constructed using sandstone and marble and has ornate carvings. The architecture is very similar to Humayun’s Tomb and often tourists get confused between the two.

The tomb is also surrounded by lush green gardens which makes it a perfect spot to relax for a while. It is also a photographer’s paradise to capture the Mughal Architecture.

There is lack of commercialisation here and you will hardly find any tourists flocking, unlike the more popular spots. This is what adds on to the beauty of this Mughal mausoleum.

5. India Gate : India Gate is a very popular tourist spot and is of great national importance since it stands as a war memorial for more than 70,000 soldiers who died during the First World War. The structure of India Gate is made using sandstone and it has the name of 13000+ soldiers inscribed on it.

There are lush green gardens, a children’s park and a War Memorial. You will also find various street vendors selling street food, tea, coffee, ice-cream, balloons and other toys. There are three such markets in Delhi, Delhi Haat Pitampura, Delhi Haat Janakpuri, and Delhi Haat INA , with Dilli Haat INA being the oldest and most popular, having opened in March 1994. After its success, Delhi welcomed two other branches of Dilli Haat in Pitampura and Janakpuri in 2008 and 2014, respectively.

The Dilli Haats in Delhi are symbolic of the culture and lifestyle of the capital of the country. The very happening place where food, music, life and festivities converge is what the Dilli Haat is famous for . Located at the heart of the city, this location has been beautifully designed over its six-acre area to provide the feel of an ethnic marketplace with a huge number of sellers and buyers bargaining over their goods. Also, famous for the various food items available within the location, this spot has carved itself a niche as a top spot to be visited by tourists to experience the life of the people of Delhi. Apart from the main Dilli Haat which is opposite the INA market, there are two other Dilli Haats in Pitampara and also at Janakpuri. Set up in 1994 by the government as a spot for artisans to display and sell their artistic wares, this place has become synonymous as a cultural hub of the city.

Delhi is a city which experiences really hot temperatures. The months from October to March are the best time to visit the city for the most pleasant experience. The autumn months are mild and provide a good ambiance while the winters can get too foggy at times. The weekends get really crowded and so the weekdays would be better to visit the location if the crowd is to be avoided.

How to Reach

Delhi being the capital has got an International airport along with the old and new railway stations. The main Dilli Haat is located opposite the INA market in South Delhi and can be reached by getting off the INA stopping via metro. Buses, cabs and auto rickshaws are available in plenty for this location as it is a major tourist hub.

Interesting Facts and Trivia about Dilli Haat

The Dilli Haat in Janakpuri was developed with the idea of making it the hub of music festivals within the city. It has got an auditorium to seat people for such festivities.
The first Comic Con in India at 2011, was conducted at the Dilli Haat owing to its central significance.
The stalls are rotated among sellers on a fifteen-day basis for a nominal fee of just Rs.100 per day.
A lot of festivals like the food festival, mango festival and summer festival are conducted to attract customers in the region.

For all the seven years that I lived in NCR, I was a regular visitor to Dilli Haat, like a lot of other Dilliwallahs. There are various reasons that keep you bringing back to the place. It is a kind of cultural hub with a rustic setting in the middle of the maddening crowd of the country’s capital. Being a ticketed place, it is not very crowded most days. Little crowded maybe on weekend afternoons in winter and evenings in summer.

You get to meet artisans from various corners of the country. Most of whom are national or at least state award winners for their art and craft.

They are given temporary space to showcase and sell their work to the audience in Delhi. And to a lot of visitors from across the world who may be crossing Delhi. They are typically allocated the space for a period of 2 weeks, which means that every 2 weeks the place changes. You have new artisans with their new offerings. There are paintings, pottery, garments, footwear, furniture, home furnishing, curios, jewelry, and lots of other items.

That would be a sheer delight to see even if you do not buy them. Though there are some things that are pretty regular like Madhubani paintings, Kashmir shawls, and clothing materials. But still, you would find a lot of new variations of the same things.

Delhi Darshan – Dilli Haat

To add another dimension to the culture are the food stalls from across the country. Right from northeast food to Rajasthani to south Indian, you would find it all. On given weekends you may find people performing street theater or some folk art form, most of the time in extremely colorful outfits. It usually makes an interesting event to watch. Apart from that you can get henna applied to your palms, and get your ear pierced. Do a lot of those small things that you would typically associate with India and you’re being an Indian.

For visitors to India, this place offers a perfect slice of India, a bit of everything. I always found it a great place to pick up souvenirs and gifts, especially for my non-Indian friends. Till a few years back the prices used to be pretty reasonable as there was no middleman involved. Artists were selling their products directly to you. But on the recent visit last week, I found that the prices are almost approaching what they would be outside on the market. Not sure if this is a good development or not, but it is a change for sure.

Information

Now what made me write this piece is that during my visit to Dilli Haat last week, I found an electronic touchscreen kiosk right in the middle of the market. They had tried to create a hut kind of structure to house this touchscreen. But I felt that the glaring screen was an aberration to the whole environment of this market. The whole rustiness that it exuberates, that earthy feel it generates is suddenly interrupted by an electronic gadget. Whose purpose I fail to understand, as there is hardly any information that the kiosk provides.

From the format, it appears that it should be providing information about the current cultural and entertainment events happening in the city. Along with the history and other tourist info about the city. But there was hardly any information available.

Time to Update Info Promptly

If someone from Delhi Tourism or those from the management of this place is reading this, I would sincerely request them to remove the kiosk. And maybe provide the same information in a more traditional way, by way of books about the history of Delhi and India. Maybe some guides to help visitors plan the itinerary. And maybe some pamphlets about happening events which people can pick up and go. There is a lot of scope for showcasing our creativity that is not high-tech and is eco-friendly along with being traditional and aesthetic.

Recommend a visit

All said and done this market remains one of my favorite places and I would keep visiting it. I wonder why other states have not started replicating this model till now. For those of you who have not visited Dilli Haat , please put it in the must-visit places while in India.

, the blogosphere, how can you be so stuck in the old? Information Kiosks by their definition provide Info you can use. Pithy, succint and to the point. It’s not the rambling idiscipline of self-praising idolatory. As for Books and pamphlets; have you considered the ecological waste. Not to mention a weekly updating; which is what the kiosk does. Finally if the kiosk helps people find information make bookings; while connecting artisans to markets and buyers i’m not complaining. I’m praising the Delhi Tourism’s vision. We have taken six decades to have pride in our ethnic roots; let’s display enough self-confidence to mirror India in all her avatars, including the technological.

Great piece – wish the bloggers desirs come true as by then the whole universe will resemble a magnified Dilli Haat.

The first electronic gadget one finds at Dilli Hat is at the entrance – you walk through it but is doesn’t work and it is supposed to perform a security check. Then there are those ugly gadgets associated to commerce – credit card approval systems. Then those terrible gadgets on the food stalls called refrigerators or perhaps coffee machines. Should these commercial electronic instruments be allowed? They spoil the rusticity and handicraft aspect. Utter nonsense. I sincerely hope that you do not carry a mobile phone to Dilli Haat but, if you do then you certainly don’t answer when it rings and immediately realise your oversight and turn it off. This things are nothing but an imposition on everyone around. I too go to Dilli Haat and I send many foreign visitors there and also suggest they look at the screen to see what else is on in Delhi. This is information for the public. What’s wrong with that? No worse, and probably better than the other gadgets discussed.

Dear Anuradha, I wish you had spent more time looking at the information booth. I am also a regular visitor at the dilli haat like you. I do not know if you have noticed,the booth has a Lcd screen as well which runs ad film’s and amongst the film’s I saw a film on human trafficking and breast cancer. I also love delhi haat, but there is too much of bargaining, they just come to half the price they quoted and that is one part I dont like, because i am very bad at bargaining plus it never gives me satisafction of good shopping

Dilli Haat is something I love too. Especially for the food! So many states’ food, its always a tough choice.

Food is not the highlight for me. I like the little shops and sometimes the cultural programs that happen there.

History Of Dilli Haat INA

Dilli Haat INA was established as a joint Initiative by the Delhi Tourism Development Corporation (DTDC), Government of Delhi and NDMC, D.C. (Handicrafts) and D.C. (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Ministry of Tourism and Govt. of India in 1994. Its primary objective was to promote traditional Indian handicrafts, art and cuisine and to provide a platform for local artisans and craftsmen to showcase their talent. Its concept was inspired by the idea of creating a market which would look like a traditional rural village, where artisans from various states of India would come together to exhibit their exquisite handicrafts and artwork.

Over the years, Dilli Haat has become the venue of crafts, music, dance and cultural festivals. In 2011, India’s first comic convention, Comic Con India was organised at Dilli Haat INA. Apart From Dilli Haat INA, there are two other Dilli Haat. One is in Pitampura, near Pitampura TV Tower, Spreading over 7.2 acres, was also developed by DTDC and was opened to the general public in April 2008. Another one was opened in Janakpuri on 13 July 2014.
