Cool Cruiser

I am interested in taking this cruise in 2025 .  The ship is the Koningsdam . Has anybody taken this cruise? Would you recommend it?

Long at-sea days may be good or bad.

There's is a lot of water to cover on this cruise, which is part of its inherent appeal - to experience the vastness of the Pacific Ocean while humbly understanding the incredible skills required during the Great Polynesian Exploration of these trackless waters, let alone the early European explorers who sailed off into these waters ....  "where there may be monsters".

Monsters? I was interested...not so much now!! 😃 😀 😄

Haha

We did this past Feb/March....hubby was in the Navy & loves sea days, of which there are a lot on this cruise.  I'm more of a port person -- I like seeing/experiencing things at various ports &, for me, this cruise didn't have that --- not enough time to do/see a lot on any island except Oahu (where we had an unscheduled 2nd overnight due to the weather not permitting us to dock on Kauai).  It gave us just a taste of every island - enough to say if we were to explore again, we'd pick 1 or 2 islands & visit each for 2-3 days if not more.  Didn't do any ship excursions -- did all private ones that we arranged ourselves or found through our roll call here on Cruise Critic so can't speak to those.

If you can purchase Club Orange, I suggest you do it -- more pleasant than the MDR for breakfast & dinner.  We did a paid upgrade to a Neptune suite so it was included as was unlimited laundry - glad we had both.

Even though the ship was full-ish, it never seemed to be crowded except for some talks in the World Stage - after suggestions to offer a 2nd time &/or show them on the room tvs, that was done.  The Lido at lunch was a little busy but if you avoided 'opening' times it was manageable.

Hubby liked the NY Pizza/deli - I wasn't impressed & the only time I tried the Dive In for a brat, the brat wasn't even warm in the middle - YUCK!  but he liked the cheeseburgers.  Underwhelmed by the Pinnacle Grill but did Tamarind twice, Rudi's was good....somehow missed Canaletto & did the Ethan Stowell chef's dinner in the Pinnacle - wish we could have saved our $ on that one.

Entertainment was good --- usually SRO in BB Kings & Rolling Stone RR.  We aren't trivia players, or coloring for adult types.  Depending on which bar you went to, drinks were either very good or 'is this what I ordered'?  Some wines/spirits were in short supply from mid-to end of the cruise.

More info?  -- just ask.

Thanks

Relaxing, beautiful ports, lots of sea days, hot!, camera-ready vistas. Delightful!

We took this cruise in Feb/Mar of this year. Loved it.

Did this cruise this winter and loved it. The stops in French Polynesia are 2 days at each island, so plenty of time to explore on water and on land! People so friendly and no where near as commercialised as I had expected.

Excellent lecturers and Hawaii education program. Music walk was amazing, our first time! I don't think we saw another cruise ship, once we left San Diego, until we arrived back 35 days later! Weather was really nice, short sharp downpours during shore days, but very refreshing and no need for more than the occassional poncho. If you love seadays, this is a perfect cruise. We were so busy we didn't read any of our books!

We enjoyed our meals and waiters. Had the same table in MDR every evening.  Loved the specialty dining. I loved the Dover sole in Rudi's. Our waiter made me napkin swans. He was adorable.

This is a great survey of Pacific Ocean stops - Fanning Island and Fakarava were our very favorites on 50 day HAL Tales of the South Pacific. HAL does a good job with the Crossing the Equator ceremonies too.  I think you will have a great time - good pick. This might be a good cruise to seek out the "extended balcony" Deck Four verandah cabins - mid ship.

Plus as a San Diego RT you don't have to fly out of Papeete, which is the worst possible flight back to the US- the flights typically leave at midnight, the airport has few to no amenities if you have to wait out the time at the airport, and check-in was chaotic. You will avoid all that with this cruise. That its a bonus.

Hawaii has the broadest spectrum of sights and activities. The Society Islands have incredible beauty everywhere you turn. I had unforgettable experiences in the lagoon waters with kayaking, snorkeling, having rays and reef sharks (small, non-aggressive) come visit us. The lagoons made it the best for me. Papeete has some unique shopping. My first time there I went to the fabric store and got a tablecloth. Next time I went, I got two more. And I use my parea/sarong cloths every day.  Nuka Hiva had a grand assortment of wood carvings. Fanning Island has tons of local straw work in a primitive setting that is next to impossible to find in the world anymore. Fakarava is is not much more developed. Riatia is lush. Tahiti is an island you can do a circle road tour and see historical and cultural sights if you’re not into the lagoons. Overnight you can sample the excellent food truck, roullets, or sample the nightlife. Moorea is just gorgeous. And a place to buy black pearls.

I’d prefer a longer cruise that also gets to Fiji and the Cook Islands but I’d take the 35 night itinerary in a heartbeat.

HAL often has the Hawaiian ambassadors aboard who add a lot to the sea days with a variety of cultural enrichment opportunities. For me, there just aren’t enough sea days!  But with the multiple overnight ports this is an itinerary you’ll not find elsewhere.

K‘dam has a lot of variety for food. It’s promenade deck doesn’t have good visibility but there are shaded deck chairs available high up. I find K’dam’s MDR very noisy so Club Orange would be an advantage to me. I like the led computerized background panels in the World Stage. Mesmerizing.

Happy planning!  m—

We did a variation of this itinerary for the first time in 2012, we were thinking it would be a one-and-done check off the bucket list, but we keep going back.  It's just flat-out wonderful, and the best snorkeling ever!  Too bad it doesn't include Bora Bora or Rangiroa anymore, but glad to see Fanning Island is still on the itinerary.

Can't answer your questions but we have it booked for 2025. 🙂

We are on this itinerary (sub Hilo and Kahului) in 2024. Thanks for the snapshot of the So.Pacific! Saving to my cruise planning folder!

We did this in Feb/Mar and it was great. Heartily disagree about Fanning Island, a real dump. The natives don't care about much except begging for stuff, usually sending their kids to be the front beggars. Island is filthy, garbage everywhere, no pride at all. Imagine Haiti. No pens for the livestock, pigs tied to trees with ropes, with broken legs, totally disgusting. HAL should skip this stop, depressing attitude and culture. Compare to Dravuni, night and day, pride versus no pride, night and day. When we return to the South Pacific,  will not waste our time being depressed by the i nabitants of Fanning Island. Took baggies of treats and supplies to share, afraid we just encouraged the current give me something  mindset.

Aloha. We took a similar cruise a few years ago. It was magnificent.  As we love HAL and of course Hawaii, we feel in love with the South Pacific and stayed a few days post cruise and have flown there a few times from HNL for short stays. Enjoy!

Save @OlsSalt  picture of the giant mobster lobster as I intend to ask the chef about those 😁

@danogg thanks for starting this thread.  We booked this in March when we we returned from the Grand South America.  We love sea days.  Thanks everyone for all the great information.

We also did this in Feb this year. Our second time.

Loved the weather and sea days relaxing break from weather in Ontario.

Spent ours at the seaview bar area and met a lotta great people.

Highly recommend this cruise.

Good info thanks to all the contributors .Thought Fanning island was to be mussed .So why does HAL still stop there ?

We appreciated Fanning Island and our fellow cruisers really helped ($$)  I knew before arrival about the island and island life. No toilets, running water, bars or snacks. The school kids and teachers danced and sang, had little shell made items. It is primitive, surely. Yes, there was some trash in the bushes along our walk, but if you looked, there were plastic bottles which the islanders don't have.

Anyway, the kids and teachers were very appreciative of our gifts.

We’re booked on this cruise for 2025. We book Club Orange, and did all in.

Thanks for all the positive feedback.  I think we’re going to book the 2025 cruise.  We love snorkelling….are there good snorkelling excursions offered?  Where could I look for some examples of the shore excursions offered?

This is the entry portal to HAL’s excursion page.  It is not complete but a fair sampling.  Our group for 2024 are using private tours for snorkeling.

Holland America’s 17-Day Circle Hawaii cruise: paradise lost and found

Posted by Linda Fasteson

  • StumbleUpon

Hawaii had been on our bucket list for some time, and when we spotted an enticing promotional price for Holland America’s 17 day Circle Hawaii cruise we decided it was time to book our trip. The voyage aboard the Eurodam sails round-trip from San Diego, where the airport, cruise terminal and a range of hotels are all in a convenient, compact area and it features five Hawaiian ports.

We flew to San Diego two days ahead of our sail date. That way we did not need to worry about flight delays and were well rested when the cruise began. This also gave us time to see some of the city.

We were also among the first to board our cruise ship. There was plenty of time for a leisurely lunch in the dining room.

We also had time to explore and photograph areas of the ship without invading anyone’s privacy.

The Eurodam was docked between the Maritime Museum and the USS Midway. This is the view from our balcony as the city became illuminated just before departure.

We joked that there was so much to do onboard that we might not want to disembark in the ports. Little did we know what was ahead!

That night we dreamed about basking in tropical sunshine under gently swaying palm trees, walking along black sand beaches, exploring volcanoes and coral reefs, and hiking to thundering waterfalls. However, an extraordinary series of events was about to change our course.

A rare combination of storms was about to keep us from stopping in several ports. Fortunately, since we knew we would have so many leisurely sea days traveling in each direction, we had taken the time to choose a ship that offers a wide range of the kind of onboard activities, entertainment and cuisine that we enjoy.

Holland America is known for attracting a more mature group of passengers, largely retirees, who enjoy a more refined ambience, enrichment activities, entertainment and cuisine.

The Eurodam’s elegant Dutch Golden Age art and artifacts reflect its heritage.

The MusicWalk™ stretch along Deck 2 is part of the ship’s partnership spaces.

Chart-topping hits fill the air at Billboard Onboard, which is in association with the magazine. Passengers soon learn to arrive early to get a seat at the popular classical performances at Lincoln Center Stage.

The first seating of the nightly music, dance or comedy performances in the two-story MainStage generally fills to capacity, but there is usually plenty of seating for the second show. BBC Earth Experiences are also held in the MainStage. These programs are exceptionally well done and should not be missed.

There are also areas like the casino and B. B. King Blues Club, named for the Memphis blues legend, where the action continues into the wee hours of the night. By day, B. B. King Blues Club is transformed into America’s Test Kitchen.

Culinary arts programs have played an important role in Holland America’s “Signature of Excellence” ships and the America’s Test Kitchen program is one of the most popular recent enhancements.

The host during our cruise, Annette, worked with Jacques Pépin when she studied and taught at the French Culinary Institute. She also taught at the Culinary Institute of America Greystone and worked in the restaurant industry. I quickly learned to go early for the recipes and a seat at her stellar presentations, from Blue Ribbon Breakfasts to We Love Chocolate.

Digital Workshop classes on cameras and other devices offered creative ideas on things to do with vacation photos, like making Living Postcards with Movie Moments. I didn’t attend these since I use Apple products, but these were always filled to capacity.

Some learned how to make souvenirs like metal prints, mugs, photo tiles, tin boxes at the Photo and Video Gallery.

No worry about unflattering photos being on display here! Photos taken of passengers are viewed privately on a computer screen via facial recognition.

Holland America offers information on independent exploration options as well as their excursions. Exploration Central’s onboard presentations brought the details of our destinations to life. It would have been nice to have them accessible on the stateroom television, as well. There is so much to do onboard that we could not always attend sessions at the scheduled time.

The ship has many comfortable places to relax or get some sun. The wrap-around view from the Crow’s Nest lounge on the 11th deck forward is one of the best.

Board and table games like sjoelen, or Dutch shuffleboard, abound in the art-lined Gallery Bar, which features cocktails by celebrity mixologist Dale DeGroff.

There are two outdoor swimming pools, one with a dome that can be open or closed according to the weather, and several hot tubs.

The fitness center has state-of-the art equipment. There is a fee for some exercise classes.

The spa’s full range of services are supplemented by classes on ways to improve health. For the ultimate in relaxation, there are a limited number of day or weekly passes available for purchase for the spa’s turbo-jetted thalassotherapy (seawater) pool and thermal suite with heated ceramic lounge chairs.

Groups meet for chess, mahjong, pickle ball, Chinese checkers, trivia games and walking a mile around the promenade deck. On our cruise, a quilting group was also onboard and met in a conference room filled with sewing machines brought onboard by the group.

A program of the next day’s activities and a different towel animal was in our stateroom each evening when we returned from dinner.

One day, towel creatures took over the pool area!

En route to Hawaii, there were things to learn daily about the Aloha State. There were talks, documentaries and movies filmed in Hawaii. Hawaiian music and hula dancing were featured nightly at sunset.

Hawaiian Cultural Ambassadors taught classes on the history and art of fresh orchid lei making, the Hawaiian language, and hula dancing, which, we learned, is much more than pretty girls in grass skirts.

History and culture presentations included personal stories, like the chilling one by Kainoa, whose grandfather dived in Pearl Harbor to inspect after the attack. He never forgot how the taps for help coming from the USS Arizona faded away as time passed.

There is fine dining and open seating in the Dining Room, where we went for most breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

From regional specialties like huli huli chicken to traditional favorites like Beef Wellington, all is artfully presented and graciously served.

There were plenty of sweet treats. The Valentine’s Day dinner featured a heart-shaped chocolate dome dessert.

Sometimes we skipped lunch and went to Afternoon Tea.

The casual dining LidoMarket buffet has a variety of stations with freshly baked breads and pastries, quiches, croissants and sandwiches, a selection of salads,  comfort food classics, daily global cuisine specials, hand-carved meats and fish, brewed beverages and chilled juices, ice cream and desserts.

There are also hamburger and pizza stands for quick poolside meals. And then there is 24 hour room service.

The specialty restaurants offer fine dining with the highest level of personal attention and a more intimate dining experience for a fee. A fusion of flavors of the eastern Pacific Rim is offered at Tamarind Restaurant.

Italian specialties are served at Canaletto, which is in a corner of Lido Market. Seattle-style Pacific Northwest cuisine, such as steaks, chops, and fish are served with ultimate panache at the Pinnacle Grill.

What happened?

As we approached the Hawaiian islands we watched televised news reports about strong winds downing trees and power lines and creating colossal waves in Hawaii. A foot of snow fell in Maui’s Polipoli Spring State Recreation Park, the first in Hawaiian history according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources!

When land was sighted the Hawaiian musicians performed a traditional welcome chant and dance. We hoped for the best.

Speculation linked the conditions to a split in the polar vortex combined with multiple storm systems. Our stops in Maui, Kauai and in Kona, on the Big Island, had to be cancelled, one by one. That left only the two ports in more sheltered areas.

While disappointed, we knew the best was being made of the situation. We reminded ourselves there are much worse things than extra time on a ship like the Eurodam!

Docking space was arranged and a day was added in sunny Honolulu. Cruise Director, Towanna Stone, a delightful former Miss Tennessee and Miss USA runner-up, kept us updated as more and more activities were added to our two additional sea days.

Ask the Captain was a question and answer session with the Captain and Cruise Director in MainStage later in the cruise. We learned a great deal about the workings of the ship and what happened on our cruise.

Honolulu, Oahu

There was sunshine for our first stop, Honolulu, on the island of Oahu. This cosmopolitan state capital is the most remote city on earth. The waves along its North Shore make it one of the most renowned surfing spots in the world.

Some opted for the scenic coastal tours and since the ship docked overnight, there was plenty of time for luau excursion or a night out at the nearby Waikiki Beach.

Remembering my father’s and others’ stories about World War 2, we took an early Uber ride to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor to have plenty of time to see the memorial sites and museums.

The extra day in port gave us time to see Iolani Palace, the only official royal residence in the United States.

It dates to the time of the monarchs who ruled the Kingdom of Hawaii until 1893 when overthrown with the assistance of the former Missionary Party, businessmen and U. S. forces. President Clinton apologized for this injustice a century later.

Lahaina, Maui

Lahaina, Maui, idyllic site of the Hana Coast, Haleakala Crater National Park and the world’s largest dormant volcano. We had hoped to spot some of the humpback whales who come from Alaska in winter to give birth. There would be no black sand beaches, lava tubes, sugar cane fields or pineapple plantations this time.

Nawiliwili, Kauai, the Garden Isle

Storms persisted in Kauai, the idyllic Garden Isle. The waterfalls, scenic Hanalei Coast, Na Pali cliffs, lush tropical forests, beaches and canyons like  Waimea Canyon, the” Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” would have created a spectacular view from a helicopter.

Kona and Hilo, on “The Big Island”, Hawaii

Kona, the dive capital of the Big Island, is known for its coral reefs, tropical fish and snorkeling, Atlantis submarine and glass bottomed boat tours to see them. There are walks through the tropical cloud forest sanctuary on the slopes of Hualalai Volcano and petroglyphs at the southern side of Kilauea volcano. And then there’s Kona coffee!

This port required tenders. Despite the sun and repeated attempts, the waves were still too rough for a visit.

However, we we able to dock and see Hilo, on the other side of the island, on the next day. We took a tour in a minivan that began with Rainbow Falls, which lived up to its name, and traveled past macadamia nut orchards to the Moana Loa Visitor Center.

Hilo is the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. Some areas are closed as a result of the massive 2018 Mount Kilauea eruption that produced 13.7 miles of lava.

Since we were in a minivan we were able to access sites we had seen on the news. The glowing lava is gone, but the distinctive smell of sulfurous steam still seeped through fissures.

Lone homes with lush vegetation stood amid the destruction of over 700 homes. 75′ high lava blocked this road to the coast.

Hawaii is constantly growing and changing. According to the U. S. Geological Survey at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the delta created as the lava flowed to the sea created 875 acres of new land!

We went out to lava fields where people who live off the grid are rebuilding. There we could stand on the same kind of lava that created the Hawaiian islands millions of years years ago.

Little plants taking root in tiny crevices were reminders of the cycles of life here.

Mango and banana trees flourished in the wild untouched areas.

We had seen authentic Hawaii, after all!

Ensenada, Mexico

The cruise also stops in Ensenada, Mexico to comply with an 1886 law that requires  foreign-registered ships like the Eurodam, which is registered in Rotterdam, to include a foreign port.

A shuttle takes cruise passengers into town to a small shopping areas where typical Mexican souvenirs are sold. There were also numerous places that sold tequila shots and places like the Happy Pharmacy above.

Instead, you might want to head south with a scenic Holland America excursion to the Punta Banda area and open-air market, take in a folkloric show with mariachi band, or head to the to wineries in the the Calafia Valley.

Vendors also offer souvenirs right at the port.

When we returned to the ship sea lions were climbing on the rocks just below our balcony. Their serenade went on for hours while they settled in for the night.

There were fewer stops in Hawaii than we had hoped for, but we’d had plenty of time to enjoy rainbows and sunsets at sea. Our Holland America cruise to Hawaii was a dream trip, after all.

' src=

Your positive attitude on this trip made a huge difference. So glad you had a chance to see some of Hawaii and were able to enjoy all your cruise ship had to offer.

' src=

Thank you, Lori. Yes, we were disappointed not to be able to stop in Maui and Kauai, but there was no point in letting that ruin our trip. Some things cannot be controlled and there are much worse problems in the world!

2024 Cruise Line Reviews

Holland America Review

  • Holland America
  • Best for older guests (50+)
  • 11 ships in the fleet
  • Mid-size ships (1,400-2,600 passengers, depending on the ship)
  • Over 500 itineraries with stops in 100+ countries

Holland America Line offers a wide range of itineraries to various destinations worldwide. The company has been in operation since 1873, making it one of the oldest cruise lines in the world. With a reputation for offering exceptional service, exquisite cuisine, and a sophisticated onboard experience, Holland America Line is a popular choice for older travelers looking for a luxurious and elegant vacation. The Holland America fleet is made up of mid-sized ships, which allows for a more intimate and personalized experience than many of the larger cruise ships on the market.

No shortage of spring break cruises in the Caribbean

It was no problem finding options for our comparison cruise: a Caribbean sailing in March, booked a little under a year in advance. There were 23 cruises to choose from, all departing from Ft. Lauderdale ( hooray for no international flights required for US travelers ). Three of those sailings were priced at $799 per person for a seven-day sailing, with itineraries for Eastern, Western, and "Tropical" Caribbean. Even the 21-day Caribbean itineraries were reasonably priced at $2,359 or less per person.

Look for promos that give you more included in your fare

And, at the time of this evaluation, Holland America was offering the "Have It All" promotion on some sailings, a premium package that included four "high-value amenities" for the first and second guest on each booking:

  • Shore Excursions: $100 credit on sailings of 6-9 days, $200 on sailings of 10-20 days, and $300 on sailings of 21+ days
  • Premium Beverage Package: Wine, beer, spirits, cocktails, sodas, specialty coffees, and more
  • Specialty dining at Pinnacle Grill, Canaletto, Tamarind

No assigned dining locations or times

In terms of dining, Holland America is known for offering exceptional cuisine. The company has partnered with renowned chefs, such as Jacques Pepin and Rudi Sodamin, to create menus that are both sophisticated and delicious. Passengers can choose from a variety of dining options, including formal dining rooms, specialty restaurants, and casual eateries. Holland America also offers a unique dining experience called "As You Wish" dining, which allows passengers to choose when and where they want to dine each night.

Best Cruise Lines

Children welcome, but most guests are 55+

Children are welcome to sail on Holland America cruises. However, Holland America is primarily known as a cruise line that caters to adults, especially those over 50 years old ( in fact, 75% of their passengers are age 55+ ). As a result, Holland America does not have as many activities and facilities designed for children compared to other family-oriented cruise lines. They're trying, though: they have Club HAL, which is their youth program that offers age-appropriate activities and entertainment for kids and teens from 3-17 years old, but those are only available during specific hours. They also have family-oriented shore excursions and some onboard activities like swimming pools, movies, and game rooms. Additionally, Holland America's dining options cater to children with kid-friendly menus and options.

Most onboard entertainment is for the older set

Entertainment on Holland America sailings definitely trends "mature" , with live music, theater productions, and enrichment programs such as cooking classes and wine tastings. The line also has partnerships with institutions such as BBC Earth and the Lincoln Center Stage, which provide unique and educational experiences for passengers.

Gratuities are extra but can be modified

Holland America will charge gratuities to your onboard account: $16 per guest per day for non-suite staterooms and $17.50 per guest per day for suites. They call this "Crew Appreciation" and emphasize that it's an important part of their team's compensation - but, unlike some cruise lines, you're allowed to modify the amount if you wish (for poor service).

Solid choice for cruising - especially for older guests

Holland America Line is a premium cruise line that offers a luxurious and sophisticated onboard experience. With a focus on personalized service, exceptional cuisine, and immersive entertainment and enrichment programs, Holland America is a popular choice for older travelers looking for a relaxed yet classy vacation to the world's most sought-after ports of call.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines

Which cruise line is the best.

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

The Best Cruise Lines

Cruise Line FAQ

Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

  • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
  • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
  • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Related: 16 mistakes cruisers make on cruise ship sea days

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

Best Hawaii cruise shore excursions

Donna Heiderstadt

A Hawaii cruise offers a convenient way to island-hop as you experience Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the island of Hawaii from both sea and land — but what exactly should you do while ashore? Choosing a cruise shore excursion in Hawaii can be tough since the 50th State offers a wide range of activities, including snorkeling and whale watching, visits to historic landmarks and sacred Hawaiian sites, and scenic excursions to breathtaking canyons and volcanoes. Foodies, fans of Hollywood blockbusters and thrill-seekers can easily get their fix, too.

With an average of eight to 10 hours on each island — although some cruises do stay overnight in select ports — it's possible to enjoy experiences that not only explore Hawaii's best-known natural, cultural and historic sites but also satisfy your own personal interests.

While shore excursion offerings, itineraries and prices vary by cruise line, here are our overall picks for the best Hawaii cruise shore excursions and what you can expect to pay.

Honolulu, Oahu

holland america cruise to hawaii reviews

Pearl Harbor

Price: $$-$$$

Pearl Harbor, one of Oahu's best-known sights, can be tricky to visit on your own because the historic World War II memorials commemorating the Dec. 7, 1941 bombing by the Japanese are located on an active military base with stringent security protocols. (No bags of any size are allowed and phones and wallets must be carried in a clear plastic bag or in a pocket.) A guided tour will get you into Pearl Harbor in a hassle-free manner and make it easy to visit the multiple sites — the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Missouri battleship, USS Bowfin submarine and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum — with the required reservations already arranged.

Some cruise lines offer multiple Pearl Harbor excursions with variations in the sites visited, so be sure to read tour descriptions carefully. If your cruise begins or ends in Honolulu, Pearl Harbor visits are often offered on embarkation or disembarkation day packaged with a hotel or airport transfer. Other Pearl Harbor shore excursions include a Honolulu city tour that visits Diamond Head Crater and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.

Important to know: Most Pearl Harbor shore excursions last five to seven hours and are appropriate for all ages. There is quite a bit of walking involved and some stair climbing is required to visit the USS Missouri, where the formal surrender ceremony by the Japanese took place on Sept. 2, 1945, ending WWII. The somber USS Arizona Memorial, where 1,177 sailors and civilians died (many of them entombed in the sunken wreck) is reached by a short boat ride.

Diamond Head Crater hike

Diamond Head Crater, the photogenic volcanic landmark seen in many images of Waikiki Beach, isn't just amazing to look at — it's also incredible to climb. Active cruisers can take on the challenge during a guided Diamond Head adventure hike to its 763-foot summit. The payoff? Stunning 360-degree views of Waikiki, downtown Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean.

This excursion requires you to ascend a series of moderate but sometimes uneven switchback trails followed by a walk through a narrow 200-foot tunnel. You'll then climb up two sets of steep stairs (76 steps and 99 steps, respectively). Those who choose the more difficult route to the summit will need to climb the 99 steps and an interior spiral staircase to reach the historic lookout bunkers. If you choose the easier route to the summit up the scenic Loop Trail, you'll then descend into the bunker and down the spiral staircase and 99 steps. You can also retrace your steps and descend on the Loop Trail.

Important to know: Book an early morning tour if it's offered, since temperatures escalate quickly by midmorning; wear sneakers and a hat and bring sunscreen and water. The hike is about 1.6 miles roundtrip and takes 60 to 90 minutes depending on the group and the number of people on the trail; total tour time is three to three and a half hours.

Oahu's North Shore tour

If you've visited Honolulu before or simply prefer scenic locales to cities, a good option is a tour that whisks you away from the bustle of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki and through the Ko'oalu Mountains to the immersive beauty of Oahu's North Shore. This lush and dramatic coastline is known for the big waves that pound its beaches from October to March and for its waterfalls, sugarcane fields and historic fish ponds. The region is visually stunning and its small towns offer a chance to sample Hawaiian cuisine, especially garlic shrimp, and shop for locally grown products such as macadamia nuts and pineapples.

Highlights include big-wave surfers riding the famed Banzai Pipeline (during winter months); the Byodo Temple, a Buddhist shrine built amid towering green peaks in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii; the waterfalls of Waimea Valley; and historic Haleiwa Town.

Important to know: North Shore excursions are typically five to seven hours in length with at least half the time spent on the tour bus. On sailings that end in Honolulu, some cruise lines offer panoramic North Shore tours combined with an airport drop-off (available for those with flights departing after 5:00 p.m.).

Iolani Palace and Hawaiian Monarchs tour

If Hawaii's royal history intrigues you, some cruise lines offer excursions that visit Iolani Palace, the final residence of the islands' kings and queens, and other sites of royal significance. Constructed in 1882, Iolani is the only royal palace in the United States; it was home to King Kalakaua, who built it, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, who was imprisoned there after the U.S. annexed Hawaii. A circa-1883 statue of King Kamehameha I, who unified the Hawaiian Islands in 1810, and Kawaiahao Church, completed in 1842, are also nearby in downtown Honolulu.

Other royal sites that might be visited on a more extensive tour include the Pali Lookout, where Kamehameha I conquered the island of Oahu in 1795, and Mauna Ala, the royal mausoleum where six of the last eight Hawaiian monarchs are entombed.

Important to know: Most Iolani Palace and royal-focused shore excursions last about four hours and combine a bus tour with a self-guided audio tour of the palace.

Kahului, Maui

holland america cruise to hawaii reviews

Haleakala Crater

Price: $$$-$$$$

Experiencing Haleakala Crater is on many Maui visitors' must-do lists and there are several ways to visit the slumbering 10,023-foot-tall volcanic peak that dominates the island's landscape. (Don't worry – it last erupted in 1790.) A few shore excursion options require that your cruise ship overnights in Kahului, the main port, or Lahaina, or has a late sail-away time.

Haleakala means "House of the Sun" and perhaps the most surreal experiences are tours at sunrise or sunset (available on sailings that overnight in Maui). To experience sunrise high above the clouds you'll need to depart the ship before 3:00 a.m. and wind your way up Haleakala's curving roadway in total darkness before watching the sun brighten the horizon and illuminate the vast 3,000-feet-deep crater with its dramatic orange-hued cinder cones. In contrast, a sunset tour lets you survey the crater and then watch as the sun disappears below the clouds and the night sky fills with twinkling stars. If you just want to experience Haleakala's scenic slopes and crater in daylight, panoramic sightseeing tours are also available.

If you're more adventurous, there are also Haleakala downhill biking tours, which transport you by minibus to an elevation of 6,500 feet and let you ride 14 miles down the switchback road on Haleakala's slopes amid the farms of Upcountry. Most bike tours do not offer access to the summit and crater.

Important to know: Haleakala tours typically last four to seven hours. Because of Haleakala's high altitude and volcanic nature, they aren't recommended for anyone with respiratory or heart problems. Temperatures are much cooler (45 to 65 degrees) at the summit, so bring a sweater or jacket.

Road to Hana

Driving Maui's legendary Road to Hana, a narrow, twisting, 52-mile route with more than 600 hairpin curves and 59 one-lane bridges, takes considerable concentration — but a Road to Hana tour on a professionally driven minibus frees everyone in your travel group to relax and enjoy the epic scenery along the way. Most cruise lines offer full-day excursions to Hana, a low-key hamlet located on the island's east coast amid jagged volcanic rocks and black-sand beaches.

Besides the thrill of this one-of-a-kind drive, which takes two to three hours to navigate, a Road to Hana excursion offers a chance to experience Maui's splendid bays and lush landscape of lava pinnacles, tropical fruit trees, giant ferns and rushing waterfalls. Highlights include the black-sand beach at Wai'anapanapa State Park, Pua'a Ka'a State Park and the Seven Sacred Pools of Ohe'o Gulch with its multiple cascades and soothing natural pools.

Important to know: Road to Hana excursions typically take nine to 10 hours, include lunch and aren't recommended for anyone prone to motion sickness. Sites visited vary by cruise line and some tours allow time for swimming.

Molokini Crater snorkel

Maui is home to one of the premier snorkel spots in Hawaii: Molokini, a mostly submerged crescent-shaped volcanic islet located about 2.5 miles off Maui's southern coast. This protected marine conservation site is reached via a scenic catamaran sail, during which guides will outfit you with snorkel gear and provide instructions for exploring these crystal-clear reef waters teeming with colorful sea life. Some excursions also visit Turtle Arches, lava formations known for frequent sea turtle sightings, and during humpback season (December to April), it's also possible to spot whales in the area.

Important to know: Molokini Crater snorkel tours are generally four hours long and all equipment, as well as breakfast, lunch or snacks and beverages, are provided. Water conditions can vary, so if seasickness is a problem, take that into consideration before booking.

Related: Ship-sponsored vs. independent shore excursions on cruises: Which should you book?

Whale watching

If you're cruising Hawaii between December and April and you're fascinated by whales, Maui offers a terrific opportunity to see pods of humpbacks in their winter playground. More than 10,000 of these charismatic giants migrate here annually to mate and give birth. Their activities — tail slaps, breaches and calves swimming alongside their mothers — are all on display as you venture out in a whale-watching boat, or perhaps a more adventurous Zodiac. Most tours are led by naturalist guides, and in some cases a portion of the cost is earmarked for conservation through the Pacific Whale Foundation.

Important to know: Expect to spend about three hours at sea as guides search for whales; sightings, while likely, aren't always guaranteed. Water conditions can also vary and seasickness is a possibility.

Nawiliwili, Kauai

holland america cruise to hawaii reviews

Waimea Canyon tour

Price: $-$$

Nicknamed the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," Waimea Canyon is a 10-mile-long gorge known for the dramatic red and green hues of craggy cliffs that extend up to 3,000 feet below its rim. Located within Waimea Canyon State Park, which now requires reservations for individual visits, this scenic treasure can be viewed from lookout points.

A shore excursion that allows for about 30 minutes of viewing and picture taking is certainly the easiest way to see the canyon from a cruise ship. These tours include lots of scenic touring during the 90-minute drive each way between the cruise terminal and the canyon; many stop at the Spouting Horn blowhole or small towns in Kauai's Koloa district.

But there are caveats, namely that rainy conditions on Kauai, which is Hawaii's wettest island, can fog in the gorge and make for a disappointing outing. Kauai's driest months are April to September.

Important to know: Most Waimea Canyon excursions take four to five hours; some longer Best of Kauai excursions combine a visit to the canyon with a Wailua River cruise to the Fern Grotto.

Hollywood in Hawaii tour

Fans of "Jurassic Park" probably know that much of the 1993 Steven Spielberg movie was filmed on Kauai — but a number of other big-screen and TV classics were, too. Movie-set tours are popular excursions, especially for film buffs. These tours take place on minibuses or motor coaches outfitted with TV screens, so you can watch snippets of Hollywood movies where they were filmed and, in some places, get out and snap photos yourself.

Besides "Jurassic Park," other movies and TV shows filmed on the island include "Tropic Thunder," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Six Days and Seven Nights," "Blue Hawaii," "South Pacific," "Donovan's Reef," "Gilligan's Island," "Fantasy Island" and "The Amazing Race."

Important to know: Most movie-set excursions take about five to six hours and primarily involve scenic touring — so even if you haven't seen the movies, it's an entertaining and comfortable way to sightsee Kauai.

Wailua River cruise and Fern Grotto

Price: $$ - $$$

Kauai is home to Hawaii's only navigable river, the Wailua River, which offers access to one of its lushest hidden spots: the Fern Grotto. This excursion combines a relaxing cruise with insights into Hawaiian culture and entertainment in the form of Hawaiian song and dance. The tourist boats that navigate this peaceful river through Wailua River State Park are run by a local family with members providing commentary.

Access to the Fern Grotto, a natural lava-rock cave covered with lush tropical vines, requires a 10-minute walk along a mostly flat, paved and shaded path. Upon arrival at the Fern Grotto, photo ops and additional entertainment await. Wailua River cruise tours also generally stop for picture-taking at Opaeka'a Falls, a 151-foot cascade that plunges into a secluded pool.

Important to know: Most Wailua River and Fern Grotto excursions are three to four hours long. Tours that combine those sights with a tour of Waimea Canyon last about seven hours and include lunch.

 Hilo, Hawaii

holland america cruise to hawaii reviews

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

While Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, one of Hawaii's most popular tourist attractions, is accessible from both cruise ports on the island of Hawaii, it's a quicker trip (about 30 to 35 minutes' drive each way) from Hilo. Most cruise lines offer excursions, but almost all of them are just a basic introduction that only touches on what this 505-square-mile national park has to offer.

The main activity involves visiting several viewpoints and steam vents on the rim of Kilauea Crater with a guide who offers commentary on this active volcano's history, geology and current status. It's unlikely you'll see molten lava, and most tours do not drive out along the famous Chain of Craters Road. Some tours, however, do include a walk through the 500-year-old Thurston Lava Tube.

Other longer and more costly excursions of up to seven hours combine a visit to the national park with a helicopter flight-seeing tour and/or stops at various waterfalls or gardens near Hilo.

Important to know: Standard Hawaii Volcanoes National Park tours are about four hours long, and many also make a stop at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Visitor Center for tastings and shopping. The walk to the rim of the Kilauea crater is mostly on gravel or dirt pathways, but some areas overlooking the crater have potential trip hazards. Also, because the crater emits volcanic gases, these tours aren't advised for people with respiratory issues.

Hilo waterfalls and gardens

Hilo's location on the island of Hawaii's lush leeward side makes it a mecca for cascading waterfalls and verdant gardens. Cruise ship excursions that visit several falls or combine a visit to a single waterfall with a stop at a botanical garden, tropical zoo or orchid farm are popular.

The two major falls near Hilo are the 100-foot Rainbow Falls, which earned its name from the prismatic effect that takes place on sunny mornings, and the powerful Akaka Falls, which is reached via a walk through a tropical forest and tumbles a breathtaking 442 feet. Other tour stops could include Hilo's Liliuokalani Gardens (the largest Japanese garden outside of Japan), the Nani Mau Gardens or the Pana'ewa Rainforest Gardens and Zoo.

Important to know: Waterfalls and gardens shore excursions vary in length from four to seven hours, and participants should expect to be on their feet for a good portion of the tour. Rainbow Falls is easily accessible from the parking lot. To see Akaka Falls, you must navigate quite a few steps and walk a half-mile circular path.

Volcano Winery

The island of Hawaii is home to Volcano Winery, the southernmost winery in the U.S. If sipping vino is a favorite pastime — and you have a curious palate — an excursion here could be a relaxing way to spend a few hours. Volcano Winery, which is family-owned and located at an elevation of 4,000 feet, specializes in tropical blends by mixing distinctive local fruits such as yellow guava and even tea and honey with grape varietals that include Pinot Noir and Cayuga to produce uniquely flavored wines. It also produces some 100% grape wines.

Important to know: Excursions to Volcano Winery are generally three hours long and include a tour of the winery and a tasting.

Kona, Hawaii

holland america cruise to hawaii reviews

Kona Coast snorkel

For passengers who didn't get a chance to snorkel in Maui, the waters just off Kona's rugged lava coast offer another excellent opportunity to spy on Mother Nature's underwater handiwork. Most cruise lines offer a snorkel excursion by catamaran that will allow even novices to don a mask and fins and behold the intricate coral and dazzling reef fish that call the area's tranquil bays and coves home. Dolphin spotting is also possible.

A more adventurous option is a snorkel tour by Zodiac, which combines the thrill of zipping around in a 24-foot motorized raft with enjoying up-close views of coastal caves and lava tubes — and some snorkel time, of course.

Important to know: Most catamaran snorkel excursions are appropriate for all ages, last about four hours and include either breakfast or lunch; all equipment, including flotation aids, is provided and some catamarans are equipped with a diving board and waterslide for added fun. Zodiac excursions are more physically demanding and are not recommended if you have back or neck problems; you also need to be able to climb back into the raft via a small four-rung ladder.

Atlantis Submarine

Price: $$-$$$$

If you've never been in a submarine, Kona offers a chance to see the area's abundant sea life as you venture 100 feet below the surface of the Kona coast's crystal-clear waters. The Atlantis Submarine (also operating on Maui and Oahu) is U.S. Coast Guard-certified, fully air-conditioned and offers individual viewing portholes.

Important to know: Atlantis Submarine excursions last about one and a half hours and are not recommended for anyone prone to claustrophobia or motion sickness; you must be at least 3 feet tall and able to climb a vertical 12-step ladder into and out of the submarine. Excursion costs vary widely from cruise line to cruise line.

Kona coffee tour

Kona is famous for the coffee that grows in its rich volcanic soil, so if you want to taste a cup of Joe right at the source, this port is the place to do it. Cruise lines offer a variety of coffee-themed excursions; some are geared to education about the farming and production process while others focus more on sampling the goods and buying souvenirs to take home.

Some foodie-focused tours combine coffee sipping with locally grown chocolate tastings and visits to Kona-based breweries, while other full-day excursions pair a visit to a coffee farm with a cloud forest tour or a tour of Kona's top historic sights and a snorkel in Kealakekua Bay.

Important info: Kona coffee excursions are mostly three to four hours long. However, costs vary widely depending on the type of excursion, from a simple tasting room visit to a farm-based roasting experience.

Place of Refuge and Painted Church

History buffs will find plenty to love on this guided bus excursion, which visits cultural and religious sites along the Kona Coast. Three key locations are on the itinerary, the first being Kealakekua Bay, where legendary Captain Cook met his demise at the hands of local Hawaiians in 1778 and is memorialized in a monument.

Nearby is the second stop: St. Benedict's Painted Church. While the outside of this small Catholic church built in 1899 looks traditional, the inside dazzles with the artwork of Father John Velghe, a Belgian priest who drew the murals in an effort to teach local Hawaiians how to read.

The third is Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, which means "Place of Refuge at Honaunau." Built in 1650 and carefully restored, this cultural site is an ancient Hawaiian religious sanctuary where the bones of Hawaiian chiefs were once stored. It later became a place of refuge for defeated warriors.

Important to know: Place of Refuge and Painted Church excursions are typically three to four hours long and involve a minimal amount of walking.

BY ASSOCIATED PRESS

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Two crew members on a Holland America cruise ship died during an “incident” in the ship’s engineering space, the cruise line said.

The unidentified crew members died Friday while the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam was at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Holland America said in a statement.

Authorities were notified and the cause of the accident is being investigated, the cruise line said. Crew members were being offered counseling.

“All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time,” the statement said. “The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority.”

The cruise line did not offer any further details about the crew members, nor which agency was handling the investigation. The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.
