My favourite ...

London Blue Badge Guide, Mr Londoner, tells us about his favourite London event. “My favourite event is the Colour Walk. Spitalfields Market hosts this relatively un-discovered happening on the third Thursday of every month, to coincide with the Flea Market. I delight in ‘the hidden and the lost’ - and this is secret London at its very best. The Colour Walkers are creative types who revel in all things bright, flamboyant and outrageous. I love it because this special event brings all sorts of different people together - gay, straight, black, white, men, women or people in between. But all anyone really cares about is the colour and curation of the outfits - and the joy of the moment. The participants apply themselves rigorously to the task - yet the whole thing is so welcoming and inclusive. Adventurous guests love it. It offers a different perspective. And it’s an insight into a surprisingly witty, quirky and more diverse side of Old London Town.” Mr Londoner is writer, photographer and broadcaster Antony Robbins.

Best UK Travel Guides - Practical Guides for Touring in the UK

best of britain travel guides

Whether you are crossing an ocean to visit the UK or coming down from the North for a weekend break in Cornwall, these are the best travel guides. No UK vacationer should leave home without at least one of these top travel books.

Most are the latest editions of classic series, some are newer but equally reliable travel guides. Whichever you choose, their tried and tested, practical advice will ensure that you eat well, stay in charming accommodations, visit fun places and never get lost on British roads. And the good news is, most of these guides are now available as apps as well as books.

The AA Bed and Breakfast Guide

More than 4,000 B&Bs, guest houses, farmhouses and inns are inspected and rated by the the Automobile Association's inspectors to produce this full-colour, regularly updated guide. Symbols highlight the best breakfasts and other features. The guide is available directly through the British Automobile Association.

The Good Food Guide

The Good Food Guide  has been rating restaurants and dining experiences since 1951. Their annual Good Food Guide, based on reviews submitted by members and subscribers from all over the UK, has become a classic and is absolutely reliable. Organised geographically, with a special section for London, and an appendix for late entries, it describes food, decor, prices, ambiance, even who's cooking behind the scenes, with thoroughness and authority. A great book to have on the road if you want to sit down to nice food with regularity. No longer affiliated with Which?, a group of consumer magazines, it is now available through the Good Food Guide website . And you can buy it as an app for smart phones and tablets.

The Good Pub Guide

The British public has relied on this informative guide to more than 5,000 pubs for years. Independent and comprehensive, it includes yearly updates and loads of reader reports. This guide points you in the direction of good country pints, friendly neighborhood boozers, and smart urban bars with big wine lists. Information about facilities, atmosphere, quality, and cost provides real insight into a British institution.

The CAMRA Good Beer Guide

Ever since the Real Ale Movement began, several decades ago, the number of small local breweries, pubs with microbreweries and pubs that regularly feature a guest selection of cask-conditioned ales has expanded dramatically. And every year the 110,000 members of CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale) update their guide with pub reviews and information on more than 600 breweries that produce real ale. A trained team of tasters provides tasting notes on many of the beers and there are pub reviews and feature stories about beer, pubs, and brewing. This one is the top British beer-lovers' guidebook to the UK. It's also available for most e-readers with special, digital-only features.

AA Road Atlas Britain

The Automobile Association (AA) is practically the last word in roadmaps of the UK. This clear, easy-to-read, and very accurate map book labels pages with their geographic location so they are easy to find. There's a huge index that includes airports and tourists sights as well as towns and villages and, in 2007, the 21st edition included information on where to find speed cameras. There are 103 town, city and port plans, locations of hospitals and emergency rooms, "Jam Busting" maps and guidance to the best, wide secondary routes. A real drivers' map book. It's available through most travel book sellers but the most up-to-date edition (along with apps and ebooks) is always available directly from the Automobile Association website.

Read our guide on how to spend a weekend in Winchester >

Winchester Cathedral, Gormley statue

This Scottish city might be relatively small but it packs a mighty punch. Those smart folks at the V&A know it's a special city – they opened their first outpost outside London in autumn 2018 on the waterfront. But it’s not just the new V&A Dundee that should be tempting you into a city break here, this Scottish charmer has an innovative spirit, gorgeous coastal location and some creative local restaurants to boot. Read our guide to Dundee here >

Dundee, Macmanus gallery, Scotland

Oxford’s world famous university might be what brings most visitors to the city, but although the ancient colleges, scurrying undergrads, singing choirs and ringing bells make this a beautiful place to wander, the city has a flip side too. It's a busy, quirky and creative working city, from the multicultural bustle of east Oxford to the historic car plant at Cowley, birthplace of UK motorcar mass-production. Here's how you should spend a weekend in Oxford >

Covered Market, Oxford

4. Newcastle

Newcastle has evolved into one of Britain’s best cities for a weekend break. The nightlife on Tyneside has long been popular with those who enjoy pubbing and clubbing and now a smattering of museums, galleries and restaurants ensure it’s also easy to fill a relaxing couple of days in northeast England. The Georgian stone facades that dominate the city centre are a regal sight, and the recently-renovated indoor Grainger Market houses hundreds of independent local businesses. Here's how to spend a top weekend in Newcastle >

Newcastle

Europe's number one city break destination, London is an ever-changing dynamic city of nearly nine million people. Here you'll find museums stuffed with masterpieces, dizzying skyscraper views and restaurants that have critics scrabbling for superlatives. However, in places it remains surprisingly low-key, with a patchwork of distinct neighbourhoods that range from charming Georgian squares and pristine village greens to graffiti-strewn arts quarters. Here's our expert's guide to exploring London >

London

6. Liverpool

These past few decades have seen Liverpool basking in the glory of regeneration. Its successful 2008 stint as European Capital of Culture placed the city firmly back on the international stage and today this dynamic northern city is buzzing. A weekend is just enough time to get a taster of how one city manages to be both down-to-earth and forward-thinking. Here's our guide to a long weekend in Liverpool >

Liverpool

Glasgow’s nickname, the ‘Dear Green Place’, could hardly be more apt. The city encapsulates Scotland in miniature, with a rolling band of crooked hills and whisky distilleries to the north, a river carving through its midriff and just shy of 100 parks, gardens, castles and national treasures woven into its fabric. From rock ’n’ roll drama to urban whisky – via trend-setting art and architecture – Scotland’s upbeat capital of cool has it all.  Here's our guide to weekending in Glasgow >

Glasgow, Scotland

Cardiff offers up an inimitable blend of ancient folklore, industrial heritage and contemporary style. The city centre itself is compact, sandwiched between a magnificent medieval castle at one end and a chic waterfront hangout at the other. And in between, a great concoction of history and customs. Read our guide to Cardiff here >

Cardiff shopping arcades

Leeds' smattering of bars, stylish Victorian shopping arcades and thriving arts scene lend the West Yorkshire city a dynamic vibe. It isn’t a place that shouts about its history, but glance up – above the modern ground-floor shopfronts – and you’ll spot inscriptions and bas-relief sculptures that nod to its past.  Explore more of Leeds with our weekend guide >

Leeds city centre

Dubbed the “City of Makers”, Derby has a do-it-yourself attitude, an exciting independent food and drink scene, and an energy that’s infectious. It was an important city during the industrial revolution, and while it doesn't quite play the same role in society today, the spirit of making things is rife throughout the city. It has one of the fastest growing economies in the UK and there are exciting plans afoot for the future. Find out why we love Derby here >

Derby Silk Mill

Hull had its time in the limelight in 2017 after winning City of Culture status. Since, visitor numbers have skyrocketed: it's estimated that 4.7 million people visited Hull in 2017. The boom has had a lasting impact on the city, and now it's a brilliant destination for Brits and overseas visitors alike to explore some of what makes Hull such an exciting and creative destination. Find out more about what's next for Hull here >

The Deep, Hull

12. Manchester

Once the world's fastest-growing city, Manchester prides itself on many things: world-famous football teams, a legendary music scene, its celebrated tram system and of course, the much-loved TV soap, Coronation Street . Spend a weekend here wandering the Northern Quarter or learning about the city's industrious past and you'll no doubt be impressed.  Read our guide to weekending in Manchester >

Manchester Town Hall

13. St Davids

Britain's smallest city is a glorious base for exploring Pembrokeshire, but don't be so quick to leave. St David's is brilliant mix of everything Wales does well: excellent local food, brilliant beer and a view around every corner that will keep you coming back.  Here's how to spend a weekend in St David's >

St Davids Cathedral

14. Inverness

Inverness is unlike any other city in Scotland. For starters, it’s the most northerly, which brings its own benefits (a natural, rugged playground on its doorstep, for one) and challenges (namely, the weather). It’s also part of a proud region that has its own traditions and heritage which, over the centuries, have created a distinct character. Spend a weekend here and you'll get a glorious taste of the Scottish Highlands.  Read our guide to Inverness >

Inverness, Scotland

15. Cambridge

For such a small city, Cambridge has had an outsized impact on the world – thanks, of course, to its university. But gazing at ancient buildings and dodging stressed-out cycling students are far from the only things to do here. Head away from the hordes of tourists in the centre and you’ll find there’s so much more to it, from the close-knit community around Mill Road to many cosy real-ale pubs. Here's how to spend a smart weekend in Cambridge >

Cambridge

Top 10 towns in Britain

You don't have to go on a city break to have a great weekend away. These 10 towns get our votes as the best in Britain.

1. Ramsgate

The Kent seaside town of Ramsgate might have had its heyday in the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria would holiday here, but today it's seeing a revival. Head here to soak up history, indulge in a great café culture, drink in some good pubs, and enjoy a little window shopping in a smattering of excellent vintage shops. How to spend a great weekend in Ramsgate >

Ramsgate, Kent

2. Bradford on Avon

Right next door to big-hitter Bath, Bradford on Avon is a gorgeous Cotswold town, perfect for a slow weekend away. At its heart is a winding river lined by woollen mills, and a recent development of shops, restaurants and a stylish hotel has given the town a new edge.  Read why we love Bradford on Avon >

Bradford on Avon

3. Portmeirion

Portmeirion village, located just outside the Snowdonia National Park boundaries in North Wales, looks somehting out of a fairy tale. Inspired by the multicoloured facades of Portofino in Italy, this Welsh village is more than just a pretty picture. Find out why you should explore Portmeirion here >

Portmeirion, Wales

4. Stratford upon Avon

It bills itself as Shakespeare’s birthplace , but Stratford-upon-Avon has plenty to offer those who aren’t big fans of the Bard. From walks along the river to cocktails with a view, this little town makes for a glorious weekend away.  Find out what to do in explore Stratford-upon-Avon >

Stratford upon Avon

5. St Andrews

Home not just to golf, but also the oldest university in Scotland, St Andrews is perched on the east coast of Scotland just north of Edinburgh. It's more than just a golfing hub though, with a spectacular ruined cathedral, 15th-century cloisters, faculty houses and narrow cobbled streets giving the town a collegiate, campus-like feel unlike anywhere else in Scotland. Our guide to escaping to St Andrews >

St Andrews

6. Harrogate

Harrogate had the reputation for being one of Europe’s most desirable spa resorts in the years before WWI. Its grand houses and expansive parkland are a legacy of that era, and though the town’s heyday has passed, it makes a delightful place for a short break today.  Explore Harrogate with our guide >

Harrogate

A short hop from Brighton, the county town of Lewes is an attractive package of narrow alleyways and crooked buildings, with plenty to keep you busy. It boasts a castle, ruined priory and a historic brewery, and if you're craving fresh air, the South Downs National Park has easy walks offering countryside views on all sides. Read our guide to a weekend in Lewes >

Lewes, Sussex

8. Bexhill on Sea

This seaside town is making a comeback. Like most of its maritime neighbours, Bexhill on Sea owes its place on the map to the Victorian railway boom in the 19th century. Today, it makes for a lovely weekend break and is home to some unique architecture, a lovely long stretch of beach and a smattering of excellent seafood restaurants. Explore Bexhill on Sea >

Bexhill on Sea

9. Stamford

With its cobbled streets and perfectly-preserved Georgian architecture, you might expect Stamford to be a sleepy, unassuming place. And while it’s true that Stamford is no thriving metropolis, it’s also no sleepy backwater. Arrive on a Friday afternoon and you’ll no doubt encounter its bustling street market, or visit one of the town’s 30 pubs on a Saturday evening to find a thriving independent real ale scene.  How to spend a glorious weekend in Stamford >

Stamford, Lincolnshire

10. Fort William

At the crossroads of traditional Highland life and 21st-century adventure, tucked between a dramatic sea loch and a u-shaped glacial valley, Fort William is the cranked-up outdoors capital of the UK. To Scotland it is what Queenstown is to New Zealand, or Chamonix is to France, surrounded by finger lochs, forests and a horseshoe of peaks. There’s ample accommodation, a fine castle and a whisky distillery, too. Find out why we love Fort William >

Britain's 12 best seaside escapes

This island, surrounded by thousands of other little islands, has plenty of coast to explore. These are our favourite seaside breaks in Britain.

1. Holy Island

Holy Island, off Anglesey’s western edge, has an area of just 15 square miles, but a coastline so notched with tiny coves, sweeping bays and dramatic headlands of its own that you’d need several weeks’ stay before you could explore it fully. This gorgeous little isle has excellent birding opportunities – there's an RSPB reserve here – as well as some glorious Roman ruins atop its highest point, and of course, plenty of beaches. Read our guide to Holy Island >

Holy Island, Wales

2. Southend-on-Sea

Like a cheeky seaside postcard brought to life, from the historic world's longest pleasure pier to the nine local beaches, all less than 42 miles from the centre of London, Southend is a relaxing, family-friendly break from the big city. Read why we love an escape to Southend-on-Sea >

Southend on Sea train

3. Hastings

Once a run-down seaside town, Hastings is back in fashion. Famous in history for its eponymous battle in 1066 (albeit held six miles east), this once-fashionable Victorian seaside resort fell into disrepair in the 1980s. But thanks to an influx of savvy DFLs (Down From Londoners), attracted by cheap Regency villas and a burgeoning arts scene, the seaside town has seen a resurgence in popularity and today makes a brilliant weekend break.  How to spend a weekend in Hastings >

Hastings fisherman's huts

4. Aberystwyth

If you like beautiful views and a friendly welcome, you’ll love Aberystwyth. This coastal university town in Wales is more than just beaches, though. Thanks to its student population, it has a lively vibe even outside of the summer season with the art school gallery putting on exhibitions and the Arts Centre hosting everything from spoken word to theatre performances. Read why we love Aberystwyth >

Aberystwyth

5. Isle of Harris

Supremely captivating, Scotland's Isle of Harris has some of Britain's whitest, most spectacular beaches. Inland you'll find ramshackle fields filled with little else but woolly sheep, and elsewhere there are portrait-perfect designer cabins that overlook the seaboard and a spiffy, architecturally-dazzling distillery that’s second to none on the Atlantic seaboard.  Find out why you should visit the Isle of Harris >

Isle of Harris beach, Scotland

6. North Norfolk

Wild and underrated, north Norfolk’s scenic coastline celebrates its 50th anniversary as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 2018. With over 45 miles of coastline and a huge expanse of protected wetland to explore, this area of Norfolk offers a peaceful and unfussy place to escape and recharge. Read more reasons to explore the North Norfolk Coast >

North Norfolk coast

Padstow couldn’t be more perfect for a weekend break (assuming the Cornish weather holds out): the town is captivating, with its warren of medieval lanes around a pretty quay. Beyond, there are golden beaches, smuggler’s coves and dramatic headlands where you can walk, sail, surf and cycle – or simply sit and contemplate your next great meal. Use our tips for a weekend break in Padstow >

Padstow, Cornwall

8. Northumberland

When the sun shines and the sky is blue, you’re unlikely to see more beautiful beaches even if you travel halfway around the world. Northumberland has rural landscapes and coastal scenery to rival even the world's finest. Favourite stretches of sand include Blythe beach with its multi-coloured beach huts overlooking golden sands, and Alnmouth – part of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Beauty.  Find out why we love Northumberland >

Alnmouth beach Northumberland

9. Aldeburgh

Offering bracing coastal walks, arts festivals galore and a proudly independent local food and shopping scene, cultured Aldeburgh is the perfect getaway for a soul-cleansing reboot for both body and mind. It’s an immediately appealing place, with weatherboarded fishermen’s huts selling the daily catch off the beach and a broad Georgian high street that’s barely changed in a century. Fill your lungs with gulps of fresh, salty air along the seafront promenade, lined with high-gabled houses in cheery pastel hues, and you’ll be glad you weathered the Friday-night traffic on the A12. Read our local's guide to Aldeburgh >

The Scallop, Aldeburgh

Arran is often said to be “Scotland in miniature”. That’s thanks to the Highland Boundary Fault that runs right through its heart, dividing a mountainous, dramatic highland landscape on one side from lush, green lowland countryside on the other. Here you’ll find peaks to climb, beaches to stroll along and stone circles and castles to explore. With a little bit of everything, this is an island that is easy to fall in love with. Read why we love Arran for a British break >

Isle of Arran, Scotland

11. Salcombe

With paddleboading, catch-of-the-day menus and gin-tasting all on offer, Salcombe combines the traditional image of the Devon coast with a touch of modernity. The coastal town is believed to have been where Lord Tennyson wrote his 1889 poem Crossing the Bar and, in more recent times, was the birthplace of preppy clothing retailer Jack Wills. Rare wildlife spots include Highland cows grazing on the Downs, Portuguese man o'war jellyfish drifting in the bay and seals lounging on jagged rocks around the coves. Read our guide to exploring Salcombe >

Salcombe

12. The Banffshire coast

It might not be one of the rock stars of the Scottish coastline, but the Banffshire coast has plenty to offer. Sitting in northeastern Scotland, this area is charmingly unique: much of it is unspoiled by humankind, and the fiercely proud locals, who speak the rich Doric tongue, are determined to hold on to its down-to-earth authenticity.  Read why we love the Banffshire coast >

Off the west coast of Scotland, the tiny Outer Hebrides island of Barra is the only place in the world where scheduled flights land on the beach. Best of Britain

12 days | discover the best of the uk, hitting must-see sites in england, wales and scotland.

best of britain travel guides

Where did The Beatles, Harry Potter, Peter Rabbit and Doctor Who originate? The UK of course! This 12-day trip will take you to a few of the must-see sites, through the rolling hills, mountainous landscapes and medieval cities of England, Scotland and Wales. Take a punt through Oxford, explore the beauty of the Cotswolds, walk Cardiff and discover popular filming locations of The Doctor, stroll through the majestic beauty of Snowdonia National Park, be inspired by The Beatles’ past in Liverpool, hike the stunning Lake District National Park and then end it all in picturesque Edinburgh – JK Rowling’s favourite writing location.

Trip overview

  • Take part in punting – a truly timeless, quintessentially Oxford pleasure that will see you floating along the idyllic waters of this university city, seeing the beautiful architecture and gardens from the perspective of a boat (or punt).
  • Spend a day exploring arguably the most beautiful and most British countryside – the Cotswolds. Explore the sleepy villages, walk through endless fields and taste some of the best ales in the neighbourhood.
  • Discover cities Cardiff in Wales and Liverpool in England with leader-led walking tours, the best way to discover the city! In Cardiff, explore Dr Who filming locations and in Liverpool, tune in to everything The Beatles.
  • Walk the famous Lon Gwyrfai path in Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), and explore the rolling hills, woodlands and picturesque villages. Then, travel to the mountainous landscape of Lake District National Park, taking a relaxing walk along Lake Windermere.
  • With Edinburgh Castle overlooking your every step, walk the winding streets of the Old Town and take a walking tour of the New Town Scotland’s artistic treasure – the birthplace of Harry Potter.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Eden Reforestation Projects. Donations help them provide local employment opportunities and tackle climate change one tree at a time as they restore forests across 10 different countries. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.
  • Please note that most of the travels on this trip is done by train. While this is fantastic and sustainable way to move around, you will be responsible for shifting you bags to and from the trains and moving them round the station. Sometimes a short walk from your hotel to the train station is also required. Please pack carefully and do not bring any unnecessary items with you. Suggested weight of your luggage should not exceed 12-15kg.

Welcome to London! England’s capital and largest city stands on the River Thames and has a history spanning back to the time of the ancient Romans. There’s lots to see and do in this bustling metropolis, so it’s recommended that you arrive a couple of days early to explore the city. Your trip begins with a welcome meeting tonight at 6 pm. After, you’re free to hit a West End show or find a fancy restaurant for dinner with a view.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

After breakfast this morning, take a train to Oxford – established in the 12th century, this city revolves around its prestigious university of the same name. The architecture of the city’s medieval centre led poet Matthew Arnold to the nickname 'City of Dreaming Spires'. When you arrive, enjoy a spot of punting – a timeless Oxford tradition of taking a leisurely boat ride (or punt) upstream. Pass along gorgeously green gardens and admire the city from the water. Then, you have a free afternoon to explore at your own pace. You might like to visit the famed college campuses or the Botanic Gardens, where you can picnic for lunch.

  • Oxford - Punting Activity

Your travel time today will be approximately 1 hour.

After breakfast this morning, you have the day free to explore Oxford. Then, you might want to explore Oxford Castle and Prison or the Ashmolean Museum – the university’s museum of art and archaeology. Then, maybe check out Blenheim Palace – a 300-year-old country house in Woodstock and the only non-royal house in England to hold the title of palace. Tonight, why not reconnect with your group and find a spot of dinner?

  • Oxford - Oxford Castle and Prison tour - GBP16
  • Oxford - University of Oxford visit - Free
  • Oxford - Blenheim Palace visit - GBP35
  • Oxford - Ashmolean Museum visit - Free

Enjoy breakfast and then take a day trip to the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. Explore the English countryside and the peaceful beauty of the local villages. This area is also known for its distinctive local yellow limestone buildings, including medieval-looking cathedrals and thatched homes. If the weather is right, today is perfect for a picnic lunch in the park with your group. Tonight, you’re free to make your own dinner plans. Spend the night in Moreton-in-Marsh.

  • Moreton-in-Marsh - Cotswolds day trip & picnic lunch

After breakfast, take a train to Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Enjoy some free time for lunch and then take a walking tour with a local guide – calling all Dr Who fans, this one is for you! Explore various filming locations and a few of the city’s hotspots related to The Doctor, all within Cardiff’s city centre. After you walk in the footsteps of David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker and Matt Smith, you’ll have the afternoon free to explore, time travel or visit Cardiff Castle – which has stood for almost 2000 years. Tonight, relax in your hotel, enjoy a Dr Who marathon, or find a great spot for dinner with your group.

  • Cardiff - Cardiff guided city tour (Dr Who theme)

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

Wake up nice and early this morning for breakfast at your hotel and then take a private transfer to Beddgelert – a village nestled in the Snowdonia area of Wales and translating to Gelert’s Grave. This community was named after the legend of Gelert the dog, who Prince Llywelyn left to guard his child. The prince found the dog covered in blood and assumed he had turned on the child, thus killing him. Tragically, the prince realised that Gelert had saved the child from a nearby wolf. Stricken with grief and remorse, the prince gave his heroic hound a ceremonial burial by the river, and to this day, thousands visit the cairn of stones that mark Gelert’s grave. When you arrive in this riverside village, take a scenic hike on the Lon Gwyrfai path to Rhyd Ddu. Winding through some of the best parts of Snowdonia National Park, this trail will wind through Welsh plantations, ancient woodlands and viewpoints spanning across the valley. An included group lunch will break up the walk, and after, you’ll take a private transfer to Bangor – the oldest city in Wales. When you arrive, the rest of the afternoon is free. Relax at your hotel or visit one of the many cathedrals in the city.

  • Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) - Included guided hike: Lôn Gwyrfai trail from Beddgelert to Rhyd Ddu

Your travel time today will be approximately 4.5 hours. Your trekking time today will be maximum 4 hours.

Have breakfast this morning at your hotel and then take a train to Chester – another cathedral city first founded as a Roman fortress in the 1st century. Take a boat cruise along the River Dee and sightsee this ancient city, with its red sandstone Roman walls, from the water. Enjoy some free time for lunch and then take a train to Liverpool in northwest England. Enjoy a free evening when you arrive – maybe hit one of the many pubs and spend a night with some local Liverpudlians.

  • Liverpool - Chester boat tour

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

After breakfast, hit the streets of Liverpool – famously, the hometown of The Beatles. You’ll take a Beatles-themed walking tour of the city with a local guide, exploring the waterfront, the famous architecture of the Georgian Quarter, local pubs where the Fab 4 began their musical journey, and maybe even the childhood homes of Paul and John. Explore some local music shops, record stores, and other famous locations tied to the historic musical geniuses while learning about the history of Liverpool itself. After, maybe grab a pub lunch with your group before enjoying a free afternoon to explore on your own.

  • Liverpool - Liverpool guided walking tour

After breakfast this morning, you’ll take a train to Windermere, in the famous Lake District of England. A mountainous region and national park, this area is popular for its stunning scenery, glacial ribbon lakes and historic literary association. Enjoy some free time for lunch, exploring the town of Windermere and then take a guided walk with your trip leader along the shore of Lake Windermere – by far, the most popular natural lake to explore in the district. This lake is also the largest in the country! Extend your walk this afternoon, relax in your hotel or find a quaint spot for dinner with your group – the evening is yours.

  • Windermere - West Shore Lakeside Walk

Your travel time today will be approximately 2.5 hours.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel this morning with your group. You have a free day to explore the Lake District National Park today – your trip leader will have many suggestions for hikes, short walks and activities in the area. You might like to take a boat tour, very popular on Windermere Lake, or take a drive to Beatrix Potter’s home in Near Sawrey. You could also choose to visit the Castlerigg Stone Circle – a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the Neolithic period. There’s so much to see and do in this gorgeous national park, it’s a nature-lover’s paradise!

After breakfast, take a train to Edinburgh, Scotland this morning. The birthplace of Harry Potter, Edinburgh is a hilly city that has captured the hearts and minds of many. When you arrive, you’ll take a walking tour with your trip leader. Explore the medieval Old Town, with Edinburgh Castle looming above, then head into the Georgian New Town, with its beautiful gardens and neoclassical buildings. After that, you have the afternoon free. Maybe explore the castle, home to Scotland’s crown jewels, or head to Arthur’s Seat, an imposing peak with sweeping views over the city in Holyrood Park. You can also book a Potter-themed walking tour to further explore the city and learn about JK Rowling’s inspirations and writing locations and even visit the grave of the original Tom Riddle! Maybe celebrate a trip well-travelled tonight with your group with a farewell dinner in one of the city’s popular restaurants.

  • Edinburgh - Leader led walking tour

Eid-ul-Fitr 2024 travel guide: 5 tips for navigating crowds and booking affordable getaways

Get ready to make the most of eid-ul-fitr 2024 with our essential travel tips, designed to help you navigate crowds and secure budget-friendly getaways..

It's that time of year again! Muslims will be celebrating Eid al-Fitr on April 10 with much fanfare and excitement after a month of fasting. Millions of people will be travelling to celebrate with friends and family, so it's important to plan ahead and shop around for the best deals to ensure a stress-free holiday . Typically, many of us will be travelling home for this joyous day (called 'mudik' in Indonesian). So, are you one of those making travel arrangements for this Eid ? Travelling during the holidays means more traffic at train stations, airports, etc. While travelling during Eid can be hectic and stressful, you can avoid the airport crowds and enjoy a hassle-free trip if you prepare in advance. (Also read: Eid-ul-Fitr 2024 travel: From Saudi Arabia to Indonesia, 7 top destinations to experience festive vibes )

Prepare for Eid-ul-Fitr 2024 with our essential travel tips, crafted to help you navigate bustling crowds and find wallet-friendly getaways.(Unsplash)

Travel tips for Eid-ul-Fitr 2024

Here are some insights and recommendations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience during this festive season.

1. Book Your Accommodation in Advance

Extended Eid celebrations are often hectic and packed with activities, with hotels, resorts and other hospitality venues booking up well in advance. We recommend that you book your accommodation as far in advance as possible if you want to be sure that your family will have a place to stay when they come to visit. This will help to avoid disappointment at the hotel of your choice. Similarly, if you are planning to visit another country in the Middle East or further afield, it is essential that you make your reservations well in advance.

2. Take Care of Your Personal Belongings

The Eid holidays offer a welcome break from our daily routines, which often involve long periods away from home. If you are travelling, you may be away from home for several days. Make sure your home is safe. Remember to switch off the oven and secure doors and gates. In order to preserve electricity and avoid short circuits, be sure that certain electronic gadgets are turned off. Do you commute by public transport? No problem. But remember to keep an eye on your belongings. To make sure nothing is left behind or taken by someone else, keep an eye on what you bring with you.

3. Browse For Good Eid al-Fitr Deals

In order to spark interest and draw customers for the Eid al-Fitr holidays, a large number of eateries and lodging options in the United Arab Emirates and the larger Middle Eastern region provide alluring offers and exclusive discounts. Check out your favourite restaurants, entertainment venues and accommodation providers' websites and social media pages for exclusive offers and promotions to maximise your savings.

4. Pack Light

When you are travelling over the Eid holiday, try to pack as little as possible. In addition to saving you time and frustration, packing light can help you avoid paying extra for additional luggage and have more flexibility when on vacation.

5. Purchase Travel Insurance

Remember to consider travel insurance as an important safety precaution when organising your Eid holidays. Travel insurance provides financial security and protection against unforeseen circumstances such as lost luggage, medical problems and trip cancellation. Having travel insurance will give you added peace of mind and the assurance that you are prepared for any unforeseen events that may occur while travelling. When choosing a travel insurance policy, make sure it meets your needs and provides comprehensive coverage for your Eid holidays.

Portrait of Brenley Goertzen

It’s that time of year when Beauty Insiders everywhere get the chance to score big during the Sephora Savings Event . And I, for one, have been waiting for weeks to snap up some of my favorite rarely on-sale products from brands like Rare Beauty , Summer Fridays , Ilia , and even Dyson .

Before you start shopping, here’s a reminder of how the sale works: Starting today, Rouge members (those spending upward of $1,000 per year) can receive 20 percent off their entire purchase. Starting on April 9, VIB members (those who’ve spent at least $350) and Insider members (all other members) will earn 15 percent and 10 percent off, respectively. And finally, everyone can save 30 percent on Sephora Collection products until April 15 — no account necessary.

To unlock your discount, use the code YAYSAVE at checkout (there’s no limit to how many purchases you can make using the code throughout the sale). As you scroll on below, you’ll notice that I’ve applied the 20 percent Rogue discount to all of the items here. Next week, I’ll be back to update this post with more Strategist-approved products — but until then, here’s a list of all the very best deals I’ve spotted.

Nécessaire Hand Cream

If your post-winter hands are feeling dry and scaly, our writer and resident beauty expert Tembe Denton-Hurst says nothing compares to Nécessaire’s “practically perfect” cream . It’s deeply moisturizing, and leaves her hands with a “subtle sheen without going greasy.”

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydra-Firm Night Cream

Speaking of creams, here’s one of our favorite night creams that’s paraben-free and noncomedogenic, meaning it’s safe for sensitive skin and acne-prone skin.

Merit Clean Lash Lengthening Tubing Mascara

There’s no better time to trade your old mascara for a tubing formula such as Merit’s Clean Lash. It won’t smudge or flake, and our writer Kitty Guo says it’s her pick for an everyday “your lashes but better” look.

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm

If you’re already a fan of the vanilla lip balm from Summer Fridays, go for this tinted shade that Denton-Hurst — a self-proclaimed “ lip-balm  aficionado” — always carries with her.

Ole Henriksen Banana Bright+ Eye Crème

Our beauty columnist Rio Viera-Newton swears by this  Banana Bright+ Eye Cream  to banish dark under-eye circles. (She also loves to use it to help  under-eye concealer  stay put for longer.)

Hyper Skin Brightening Clearing Vitamin C Serum

Another brightening treatment is Hyper Skin’s vitamin-C  serum, which is designed to rapidly fade dark spots. After five months of using this formulation, Denton-Hurst says she noticed  less hyperpigmentation on her skin, particularly around her chin.

Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush

We found Rare Beauty’s liquid blush to be the most buildable in our roundup of the best in the category. It’s available in two finishes (matte and radiant) and ten shades, which can even be applied as an eyeshadow or lip tint.

Verb Ghost Conditioner

Thanks to its moringa and jojoba seed oil-packed formula, Verb’s Ghost conditioner moisturizes, detangles, and smoothes hair after a single wash. It also “doesn’t weigh down your hair whatsoever,” says our writer Rachael Griffiths , who adds that it’s suitable for all hair types.

Sephora Collection Best Skin Ever Full Coverage Multi-Use Concealer

When we spoke to Sephora employees about what TikTok-recommended products are actually worth it, they told us about this dupe for Tarte’s Shape Tape. And when our writer Arielle Avila tried it for herself, she reported that it’s actually better: “It’s long-lasting and buildable, and it keeps my under eyes hydrated and glowing,” she says.

Kulfi Free The Brow Volumizing & Laminating Brow Gel

I wrote about Kulfi’s non-flakey brow gel-slash-serum in this week’s edition of our Beauty Brief newsletter. The formula makes my brows look like I just left a lamination appointment, meaning they’re ultrafeathery yet more defined. (Fair warning: It tends to sell out quickly, so I’d snag one ASAP.)

Crown Affair The Dry Shampoo

Last year, Avila swapped her old aerosol dry shampoo for Crown Affair’s talc-free formula and never looked back. “I’m able to go days after washing my hair without an oily or irritated scalp,” she says.

Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder Flushed

After testing over 20 cream blushes to find one that actually lasts, Rio crowned this formula the winner. She says the high pigment, in conjunction with the soft, powdery finish, is what makes this Danessa Myricks blush really stick to the skin.

Canopy Humidifier Starter Set

I own our best overall humidifier from Canopy and don’t go a day without using it. It’s compact, easy to clean, and keeps my complexion super hydrated.

First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub With 10% AHA

In my new roundup of  the best body scrubs , I crowned this my top choice for treating  keratosis pilaris . It contains tiny pumice buffing beads that work to brush away dead skin cells, so it also works for clearing up buttne ( butt acne ) and loosening ingrown hairs.

Shark FlexStyle Air-Drying & Styling System, Powerful Hair Blow-Dryer, and Multi-Styler

Last but not least, I’ve got my eye on Shark’s powerful blow-dryer brush . It’s half the price of Dyson’s Airwrap and utilizes the same high-speed airflow technology and variety of attachments.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.

The Best Photos of the British Royal Family on Easter 2024

King Charles and Queen Camilla were joined by a small group of Windsors at church today.

While it's unclear whether or not the modern day Windsors participate in an Easter egg hunt on the grounds of the estate, royals of centuries past have enjoyed the tradition; In 1833, 14-year-old Princess Victoria (the future Queen Victoria), wrote in a letter , "Mama did some pretty painted & ornamented eggs, & we looked for them." Years later, she and her husband Prince Albert continued this tradition for their children; in a journal entry in 1869, Queen Victoria wrote , "After breakfast, the children, as usual on this day looked for Easter eggs."

This year's Easter gathering will look different from previous years , as Prince William and Kate Middleton won't be in attendance with their children following the news of Kate's cancer diagnosis , and due to King Charles's cancer diagnosis, it was a much smaller group.

Here, see all the best photos of King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the rest of the royal family in Windsor on Easter 2024:

Table of Contents

Travel insurance for indonesia, what does travel insurance for indonesia cover, does travel for indonesia cover all emergencies, will an insurer cover me if i have a medical condition, cost of travel insurance for indonesia, how do i compare travel insurance for indonesia, frequently asked questions (faqs).

While Indonesia may be most famous for its tourist hub, Bali , the archipelago, as a whole, has grown in popularity in recent months. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported Indonesia replacing New Zealand as the top destination for short-term trips overseas by Australians last year—the first time since the Bureau started collecting travel records nearly 50 years ago.

Roughly 1.37 million Australians visited Indonesia in 2023. While some 86% took a holiday there, 7% visited friends or relatives. Whatever your reason for visiting the country, you’ll want to make sure you’re safeguarded against common mishaps that can arise while away, and even in the lead up to your holiday. Travel insurance for Indonesia can provide this protection, paying out should you fall ill or get injured and need treatment during your stay, if you lose your baggage or belongings or need to cancel your trip. Find out exactly how travel insurance for Indonesia works, what it covers and does not cover below.

If you’re sticking solely to Bali and its associated islands, then you can read more in our guide to travel insurance for the island of the gods.

If you’re planning to visit Indonesia, you’ll need travel insurance specifically for the destination. There are three main types to choose from:

  • Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months to Indonesia
  • Annual multi-trip: for more than one trip in the space of 12 months to Indonesia or various destinations. This type of cover can work out more cost-effective than buying multiple single trip policies but not always so it’s best to compare both types of cover.
  • Long-stay/backpacker: for an extended stay in Indonesia, of typically 60 or 90 days, or 12 or 18 months. Cover for 24 months may be available, from certain providers.

Depending on the insurer, and the type of policy you choose, you may have the option to take out cover for Indonesia alone, Asia or worldwide destinations. Note that insurers usually offer worldwide policies that include the US and destinations such as Canada, Greenland Mexico and the Caribbean, and worldwide policies that exclude them, depending on where you’re going, as medical costs are extremely high in this part of the world.

A good travel insurance policy will cover emergency medical costs should you fall ill or injure yourself while away. This may also extend to medical rescue, and repatriation costs, for severe cases where you need transporting to a hospital or back to Australia.

Cover for personal liability should you injure someone or damage another person’s property, and trip cancellation for reasons such as falling ill before the trip or suffering a bereavement should also be included as standard. You should also be able to claim for loss or theft of your luggage and belongings. Note that there’s typically a total limit on the amount you can claim for your possessions, as well as an individual limit for each type of item.

A policy may additionally include a number of other forms of cover, such as:

  • Personal money: the amount that can be claimed if your money is lost or stolen
  • Missed departure: covers the cost of additional accommodation and travel should an emergency cause the policyholder to miss their journey
  • Travel delay: pays out if your scheduled transport is late by typically a least 12 hours
  • Company insolvency: compensates you if your airline or hotel goes bust
  • Personal accident: pays out if an injury causes permanent disability or death

Insurers usually offer basic policies with few benefits and low cover levels and comprehensive policies that provide their widest range of cover and higher cover levels. They may also have one or more mid-level policies for anything in between.

Shopping around will allow you to find the best policy to suit your needs and budget. For help with finding a comprehensive policy, we’ve conducted in-depth research to find what we believe are the top 10 available .

It may be impossible for travel insurance for Indonesia to cover everything that can go wrong with a holiday, but it can cover a wide range of common scenarios, particularly if you opt for comprehensive cover. A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) sets out the specifics of what it does and does not cover. You should be able to access this on the insurer’s website, and read it before making a decision on whether it’s right for you.

Bear in mind that most insurers won’t cover a holiday where you’ve travelled to parts of Indonesia that the government’s Smartraveller website has on its “do not travel” list. To avoid this type of problem, it’s best to check the website for updates on Indonesia before purchasing a policy, and before departure. Smarttraveller will also advise if you should travel with caution, warning of risks, such as acts of terrorism, civil and political unrest and natural disasters.

Insurers will also likely reject claims resulting from intoxication from alcohol or drugs, and disorderly behaviour. If you’ve partaken in any sports and activities while away, it’s likely an insurer will only accept related injury claims if you wore the appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet, or harness.

Having a medical condition won’t necessarily hinder your chances of finding suitable cover for Indonesia, but you may find you’ll have to shop around a little more.

Only some insurers provide cover for what they term “pre-existing medical conditions”. These are conditions that you had before taking out the policy. Those that do provide this type of cover usually raise their premiums to do so, owing to the heightened risk that you’ll make a medical-related claim while away. The policy premium—the price of the policy—will often rise with the severity of a condition. This means cover for a heart condition will be more expensive than for diabetes, for example.

When running quotes on the sites of insurers that provide pre-existing medical cover, you’ll be taken to a medical screening section of the application. Make sure to state what conditions you have and answer the questions about them. This ranges from whether, and how often you take medication, to when you last saw a practitioner concerning your condition. If you later make a claim relating to a condition that you did not declare or detailed inaccurately, an insurer could refuse it.

Insurers refer to a number of factors when calculating how much you must pay for cover. This includes the number of people travelling, and the holiday destination and duration.

More mature travellers and those with pre-existing conditions will likely be charged more than younger travellers and those without conditions, as insurers deem them as high-risk travellers that will likely need to claim while away.

We used the profile of a family of four, aged 42, 40, 14 and 12, spending 13 to 26 May in Indonesia, and assumed they have no pre-existing conditions, (although these providers do offer cover for pre-existing conditions should you need it).

We found basic cover ranged from around $106 to $241, while comprehensive cover started at around $226, with the most expensive policy costing just under $324.

Running quotes on travel insurer websites will allow you to make side-by-side comparisons of their policies based on the types of cover they offer, the various cover levels and prices. Looking through the offerings of a number of insurers can help with finding a deal on the cover you need.

When running a quote you will need to enter details about yourself, anyone else travelling with you and your trip. This includes your name, the age of all travellers, your holiday destination and duration. If pre-existing cover is available, you will also be taken through a medical screening, so the insurer can build a medical profile on each traveller.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Indonesia?

Travel insurance is not a legal requirement for travelling to Indonesia. However, it is recommended by Smartraveller, which advises taking out a comprehensive policy that covers all emergency medical costs, including emergency treatment and medical evacuation. Without it, you could be faced with bills for thousands of dollars, which the Australian government will not pay.

What is required to enter Indonesia from Australia?

Australians visiting or transiting through Indonesia should apply for an e-Visa on arrival , at least 48 hours before travelling. You can alternatively get a Visa on Arrival at some international airports, seaports or land crossings.

To apply for an e-Visa on arrival or the Visa on arrival, you need to have an ordinary (non-emergency) passport that will remain valid at least six months after your arrival in Indonesia. Smarttraveller also advises ensuring your passport has a minimum six months validity from your departure from Indonesia, to avoid any issues with leaving the country or with an onward or return flight. You’ll also need to complete an e-customs declaration within three days of departure to Indonesia.

The Bali Provincial Government has introduced a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 ($14.56 AUD) per person for foreign tourists visiting Bali. The levy is separate from the e-Visa on Arrival or the Visa on Arrival. You can pay the levy online before you travel or on arrival at a designated payment counter at Bali’s airport and seaport. Further detail can be found on the Bali Provincial Government’s website .

What is ‘excess’ in travel insurance?

An excess is a set amount you’ll be expected to pay on each approved claim. It’s usually levied per person on the policy, per event, per claim, but you can check the PDS for the specifics concerning your insurer. You usually can pick from a range of excess amounts, from $50 – $250 on average, when taking out a policy.

The more you choose to pay in excess, the lower your policy premium typically will be, while paying less in excess will raise the cost. An excess is usually deducted from a claim amount, so you won’t need to pay for it out of pocket. However, it’s still crucial that you ensure you can afford it. Some insurers may also offer an excess waiver if you pay an extra premium.
