Van Supported Tours

adventure bicycle tours

You want fun, good food, gear-free riding, and other like-minded people to share the road? Then consider one of our popular van-supported tours. Adventure Cycling’s van-supported tours offer all the thrills of a classic, self-contained tour: a group of around 13 riders, camping, and shared group cooking. But you’ll spend your riding days free of personal and group gear since we provide a van to do all the heavy lifting, and two experienced leaders will make your tour one to remember. The group may also use the support van to take side trips that would not be reachable otherwise. We offer van-supported epic, cross-country adventures and many one- to two-week tours. We include occasional motel overnights (one every 10 days) on longer trips.

“The route and terrain were fantastic, offering many miles of solitude and quiet. I also really enjoyed the group — all very friendly and quite collaborative as a new found travel family.”

Learn More about our Van Supported Tours

What is included in the price.

  • Adventure Cycling Tour Leaders
  • Accommodations**
  • Support Van
  • Maps and cue sheets (most tours have digital mapping available)
  • Safety triangle and a gift
  • Park entry fees for National and State Parks
  • Use of group cooking equipment, tool kit and first-aid supplies

*Meals typically start with dinner on day one and end with lunch on the last day, and include group meals. You may choose to supplement our traditional meal schedule with other meals on your own. **The overnight for the last day of the trip is typically not included.

Level of Support

Our van supported tours have two of our tour leaders with you, one driving the van and trailer and the other riding sweep. The van will carry your gear from overnight to overnight – you just need to bring with you on the bike what you need for the day, including any clothing you might want, bike repair tools, and lunch and snacks. You’ll shop for food and cook in small, rotating groups. You should come to the tour physically prepared to ride the entire route. Vehicle support will be prioritized for use in medical and mechanical emergencies.

Before You Go

Upon signing up for an organized tour, you will receive confirmation and preparatory materials, including a copy of Before You Go: A Handbook for Adventure Cycling’s Van-Supported Tours (PDF/3,675 KB), which contains a packing list and training tips. About 60 days prior to your trip, you will receive a Tour Information Packet with specific logistical details about your starting location, the designated bike shop, shipping your bike, making travel arrangements, and much more.

Meals and Group Cooking

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided for each day of the trip. Your group shares responsibilities for food purchase, preparation, and clean up on a rotating basis. Vegetarian and special dietary needs will be accommodated, though food selection may be limited in some locations.

Accommodations

Most of the overnights will be at private or public campgrounds with a range of amenities. Depending on the nature and location of the trip, these facilities could range from RV parks with hot tubs to wilderness locations without running water. Indoor facilities such as motels/hotels, hostels, and churches are used occasionally, but on our more remote trips, some primitive camping is possible. Overnight facilities vary. You will need a good freestanding tent with a ground cloth, a sleeping bag rated appropriately for the season and elevation of your tour, and a sleeping pad. We strive to find showers as much as possible, but there may be some nights that they are not available.

Being Prepared

Adventure Cycling tours are a great way to get out and explore new places and meet new friends. You should plan on coming to your tour prepared to ride, both physically and with the correct equipment. Check out our  Before You Go booklet   (PDF) for more information on training and packing. You shouldn’t come to your tour planning to ride into shape, as coming to the trip ready for anything will have you enjoying it from day one.

Be sure to read the full tour itinerary, including the Adventure Level, Terrain, and Technical Difficulty ratings to make sure that you prepare fully for the tour. If you have additional questions about the tour, please reach out to us at [email protected] .

Weather on our trips is highly variable and can be unpredictable. Your Tour Information Packet will have some information about weather for your tour, but you should come prepared to ride in all riding conditions no matter where your tour is or what time of year it takes place.

Mechanical Support

Van supported tours require a degree of mechanical self-sufficiency. You should have the tools and skills necessary to change flats and perform minor mechanical adjustments. We will carry a group kit with general tools that will work for most bikes. You should bring any specialty tools and parts that you may need, especially on more remote tours where access to bike shops is limited. Our leaders have some basic mechanical skills, but are not trained mechanics.

Disclaimers

Participation on an Adventure Cycling Association tour is physically demanding, strenuous, and potentially hazardous. By registering and joining the tour, you assume the risk associated with your participation.

While we strive to find routes that are off the beaten path, many of our trips must use roads that can be heavily trafficked in order to get us to our overnight location, a grocery store for grocery shopping, or an attraction along the way. Your leader will cue you in to these sections during your daily map meetings. Traffic volume, shoulder width, and road conditions are not part of a tour’s difficulty rating system.

The number of participants on a tour may be adjusted in response to demand and facility availability. Adventure Cycling reserves the right to make route and accommodation modifications without notification and to make alterations and substitutions to the itinerary as needed to improve the quality of the tour or to accommodate the comfort and well-being of our guests.

The Bicycle Adventure Club - Come Ride With Us!

Ride rating system.

« previous image next image »

The Bicycle Adventure Club (BAC) is a non-profit, bicycle touring club for serious cyclists with a current membership exceeding several thousand. Members volunteer to create and lead a variety of bicycle tours, both domestic and foreign for each other. Our heritage goes back over 40 years to the International Bicycle Touring Society; the club as it currently exists began operating rides in 1983. We have a large number of members who have been with the club for many years. We enjoy the camaraderie of exploring the world with our cycling friends on tours developed by club members for other members.

Membership in BAC is open to experienced touring cyclists over 18 years old. The membership fee to join is $30 for an individual and $60 for a couple; renewal fees each year after that are $20 for individuals and $40 for couples and is due on the anniversary of your join date. Members that allow their membership to lapse will need to rejoin the BAC at the full rate. Only BAC members can sign up for and participate in rides. New BAC members are required to have email access in order to receive club communications and to apply for club rides.

STANDARDS OF MEMBER CONDUCT

BAC supports the concepts of tolerance, fairness, and acceptance of all members regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, age, disability, color, creed, national origin, sexual preference or any other personal characteristics. BAC requires all members to treat others with respect, and to behave in a safe manner while on a ride. BAC does not accept harassment of any kind from any member. Membership may be terminated at any time for intolerant, unacceptable or unsafe behavior in violation of this section.

  • BAC rides are usually developed and led by volunteer club members (“Ride Directors”). On some overseas rides the volunteer member (called a “Ride Coordinator” in this case) will plan the tour in conjunction with a commercial tour operator and the commercial operator will lead the ride.
  • The volunteer Ride Director or Ride Coordinator makes all decisions concerning the features of the ride and the qualifications of the participants.
  • Rides vary widely in difficulty. View our Ride Rating System.
  • Rides are posted on the BAC web site. BAC members have access to a detailed description of each ride, including difficulty, cost estimates and other pertinent information. Club members apply to join rides through the club website.
  • Lodging is pre-arranged in motels/hotels, two to a room with private bathrooms when available. Lodging and meals vary from modest to deluxe and trip costs vary accordingly.
  • Ride costs include a fee to the club ($50 for US/Canada and $100 for International), lodging as specified, any planned group meals, daily social hours, luggage van rental and other group expenses. Ride costs may also include expense reimbursement to the Ride Director, and, if applicable, expense reimbursement for a van driver. Any funds remaining after the end of the ride are returned to the participants.
  • Normally, the group rents a van to carry luggage from one town to the next so that riders do not have to carry anything on their bikes except their needs for the day. On some rides, each rider is expected to share the van driving; on others a van driver may be hired.

RIDER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Each rider brings his/her own bicycle or rents one suitable for the ride. The bicycle should be in good condition and each rider is responsible for performing his or her own bike maintenance as necessary.
  • It is up to each participant to determine that he or she is able to do any ride for which they sign up. However, the ride leader makes the final determination as to who is accepted for each ride.
  • Maps and cue sheets are provided by the Ride Director. We do not ride as a group so the ability to read maps and cue sheets is essential. Riders start in the morning at the time of their choosing and each rider is responsible for getting himself or herself to the next destination on their own, rain or shine.
  • The luggage van is not a sag wagon, although it can be used for support in an emergency.
  • Industry approved helmets are mandatory on all rides.
  • Riders are expected to have a positive attitude, be congenial with other tour participants, be flexible in those cases where things don't quite turn out as expected and cooperate with the Ride Director and other riders in the course of the ride.
  • Riders may sometimes be required to share driving of the luggage van, host a social hour or otherwise contribute to the efficient conduct of the ride.
  • Any participant whose conduct during the ride is unacceptable to the Ride Director may be asked by the Ride Director to leave the group.
  • Participants undertake rides at their own risk. BAC and Ride Directors are not responsible for participants' possession or for any personal injury, death, property damage or other loss, whether arising from accident, cancellations, delay or any other reason.

LEADING RIDES

  • The club relies upon its volunteer members to create and lead its rides. Our volunteer leaders are the life blood of the club.
  • A library of past rides is available to assist in organizing a tour.
  • Ride Directors Guidelines are available under "For Ride Directors and Coordinators" on the "Docs" page of this web site.
  • The BAC Ride Coordinator and Ride Leader Mentors are available to assist in organizing and conducting a ride.

If you're a serious cyclist and this sounds like your type of club, please join us. You can do it on-line now.

First Look at the Viral Wanderer (Sea Otter 2024)

adventure bicycle tours

Reporting from the 2024 Sea Otter Classic, we got a first look at a brand new drop-bar adventure bike from Viral Bikes. Read on to find a photo gallery and learn more about the intriguing Viral Wander, a titanium bikepacking rig designed around the Pinion Smart.Shift system…

adventure bicycle tours

Former Niner founder and engineer Steve Domahidy has been designing bikes for a long while. After striking out on his own, he designed and released several small batches of carbon and titanium bikes under Domahidy Designs. Later, Steve launched a new brand with a much more focused vision and compelling name. Viral Bikes officially launched in 2016 with its flagship bike, the Skeptic, a titanium all-mountain hardtail designed around the Pinion Gearbox and a Gates carbon drive. Following that model, Viral later introduced the Dérive ( find our review here ), which was dubbed a bikepacking hardtail and had the same Pinion Gates drivetrain. This year, Steve and co. have been particularly busy. Not only did they move operations from Bend, Oregon, to Bentonville, Arkansas, but they’ve fleshed out their latest model for today’s release. Read on to learn more about the Viral Wanderer.

Viral Wanderer, Pinion SmartShift

The Wanderer is the brand’s first drop-bar bike and was specifically made for long off-road endeavors and bikepacking rides. It’s built around a 100mm travel mountain bike suspension fork and Boost spacing and, similar to the other two bikes in their lineup, a Pinion gear box and belt drive. More interesting, the Wanderer is built specifically around Smart.Shift, Pinion’s electronically shifted gearbox. I met up with Steve, who shed some light on this. “As soon as we had the Pinion Smart.Shift in our hands, we knew that this would be the next bike to market.” Following suit, TRP released the Hywire, a drop-bar shifter/lever combo designed around Smart.Shift that Steve claims does this drivetrain justice. “There have been a lot of workarounds to making drop bars compatible with the Pinion gearbox, but they’ve all been pretty major compromises, until now,” Steve added. For those worried about batteries, Steve mentioned that Pinion claims a full 10,000 shifts per charge, which makes it a non-issue most rides.

Viral Wanderer, Pinion SmartShift

Similar to the Skeptic and Derive, the Viral Wanderer also pushes the boundaries of gravel/adventure geometry. It was designed with a relatively slack 67.5-degree head tube angle and long front center that extends the wheelbase and reach of the Wanderer for more stability and confidence-inspiring descending, whether loaded or not. In addition, the Viral Wander features size-specific geometry with a twist; the seat tube angle changes for each size instead of the chainstay length. “At the end of the day, we have little control over the final chainstay length of a bike. It is what it is when you tension the belt to a specified amount, and you can change that a bit with belt lengths and gear ratios, but now you’re compromising final drive ratio to accomplish a chainstay length. That’s not how we wanted to go about it,” Domahidy said.

Instead, the new Wanderer puts larger riders and smaller riders more forward on the bike. This is achieved with a steeper seat tube angle, which effectively accomplishes the same result as longer chainstays. “Shorter riders benefit from a steeper seat tube angle as it helps improve the front and center geometry, which helps keep toe overlap in check. Taller riders benefit from the same steepening of the seat tube to keep their center of balance more forward and centered over the bike. As you raise the seatpost for taller riders, this moves their center of gravity further and further back which unbalances the ride characteristics. Because we can’t really effectively control the chainstay length, we decided to control center of gravity through seat tube angle.” As you can see in the geometry chart below, Viral switched from a S-XL sizing model to V2-V5, similar to a few other bikes we’ve talked about recently.

Viral Wanderer, Pinion SmartShift

Domahidy spent a lot of time refining the geometry of the Wanderer, and he calls the end result sublime. Part of that may be due to the wild-looking and very unique seat cluster, which decouples the top tube from the seat tube and uses a titanium spring plate welded to the seat stays to support the rider. Steve said this offers between 10-20mm of flex to the seat tube, giving the rider even more comfort on the rough stuff. He and his partner have done a bit of bikepacking with the prototype, and he said the rear end remains laterally stiff with a load. We’re super excited to experience this for ourselves.

Viral Wanderer, Pinion SmartShift

There are plenty of touring/bikepacking-ready features on the Viral Wanderer. It has five sets of cage mounts in and outside the triangle, including two three-packs. It also has a couple of stray bosses at the front of the triangle to add the potential for a clean bolt-on frame bag. It also has rear rack mounts on the alloy dropouts and the seat stays and internal dynamo cable routing for a rear tail light.

Viral Wanderer, Pinion SmartShift

Viral is also co-launching the Wanderer with Industry 9 using their new SOLiX M wheels and a brand new gravel stem. The SOLiX M Ultralite 300 Carbon wheels weigh just 1,385 grams per pair and feature a rim matched to the Wanderer’s 29 x 2.4” tire clearance. The SOLiX M’s 0.59-degree engagement angle is also a nice companion to the Pinion gearbox, adding very play little to the Pinion’s clutch mechanism.

The Wanderer frame kit comes with a frame, the Pinion C1.12i Smart.Shift gearbox, forged cranks, battery, charger, wiring, and a full TRP Hywire brakeset with 180mm rotors front and rear (either 6-bolt or centerlock). It will also come with a Gates CDX cogs and belt, the Pinion cog lock ring tool, and an oil change kit. Note that Pinion recently updated their requirements for servicing the gearbox. It’s now only necessary to change the oil every 6,000 miles, regardless of how long it takes you to get to that mileage.

Viral Wanderer, Pinion SmartShift

Pre-orders are available now from Viral Bikes and require a 50% deposit. Folks who order the frame kit will receive the TRP Hywire brakes and shifters for free in addition to being able to select the color anodization for their frame’s logos and stripes. In addition, Viral is offering complete bike for this pre-order special, with components from Industry 9, Crank Brothers, Fizik, and more, which will also be discounted from the normal sale price of the complete bike. Lastly, in collaboration with Tailfin, Viral customers purchasing a frame or complete bike can add any assortment of Tailfin products they might want to attach to their new bikepacking rig.

The pre-order price for the frame kit is $6,490, and the complete starts at $8,500. Learn more about the Wanderer and how to get in on the pre-order action over at Viral.bike .
