Barcelona and Lisbon Itinerary

Many dreams of traveling to Europe, but deciding where or when to travel or what to do on holiday can be hard. Some of its major cities, like Barcelona, Spain, and Lisbon, Portugal, are popular stops for tourists. We hope you will find this Barcelona and Lisbon Itinerary helpful.

The Ultimate 10-day Barcelona and Lisbon Itinerary

Traveling to Barcelona and Lisbon will be incredible as you visit two amazing cities and countries. There are plenty of attractions, activities, and foods to try that will provide an exciting and memorable trip to some of the most beautiful places to exist.

This guide will tell you everything you need to know about traveling to Barcelona and Lisbon. We’ll discuss everything from when you should go and how long you should stay to specific activities and events to try and see. We have created the information that you need to plan an unforgettable trip.

An Overview of Barcelona and Lisbon

Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain. This region of Spain is an autonomous community, so they maintain some cultural aspects that are different from what you would find elsewhere in Spain. For example, the Catalan language is spoken in addition to Spanish. While traveling there, you will be fine with knowing just a few key phrases in Spanish.

Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and the country’s largest city. While Portugal borders Spain and shares a peninsula, its official language is Portuguese. Despite being neighbors, there is very little Spanish spoken in Portugal. In fact, English is more commonly spoken than Spanish.

Both Barcelona and Lisbon are large cities with plenty of historical museums, buildings, and attractions. Both cities are coastal and have plenty of nearby beaches. Even though these cities are relatively close and seem to have many similarities, you will understand the many differences as we discuss your future trip.

Planning Your Barcelona and Lisbon Itinerary

Once you have decided that your trip destinations will be Barcelona and Lisbon, it is time to start planning. Some of the first things you need to decide are how long you want to travel and when you want to go. From there, you will be able to plan the details of the trip, like accommodations and activities, to fit within your travel dates.

We recommend taking a ten-day trip to these destinations to get enough time to explore two cities. You can, of course, stay for shorter or longer amounts of time by modifying our itinerary. However, this guide will give you plenty of activities, food ideas, and lodging options for a ten-day trip to Barcelona and Lisbon, spending about five days in each city.

Many say that the best time to visit Barcelona and Lisbon is either late spring, March to May, or early fall, September to October. These months still have warm weather but fewer crowds than you would experience if you visited in the middle of the summer, like in June or July.

When traveling to these places, something else to consider is if you want to participate in any local festivals, events, or concerts while you are traveling. We will mention a few of these throughout the article and let you know when they usually happen so that you can plan accordingly if you are interested.

Top Activities in Barcelona, Spain

When spending about five days in Barcelona, Spain, you will want to plan one to three activities per day depending on how long you expect to spend at each location and how far apart they are. In general, Barcelona is famous for its cultural attractions and architecture . In fact, many of the attractions that we have selected are recognized as UNESCO world heritage sites.

We have organized our recommended activities for Barcelona by:

  • Architecture
  • Parks and Outdoor Areas

Barcelona Architecture

La Sagrada Família is one of the most famous landmarks in Barcelona. It is a catholic cathedral known for its beautiful architecture and religious symbolism. You can take guided tours around the cathedral to learn about the building’s architecture, construction, and significance. Many tourists plan trips around this attraction, which is a must-see. Plan to spend at least two hours here.

lisbon to barcelona tour

Casa Batlló is another piece of architecture designed by Antoni Gaudí, like the Sagrada Família. Originally built in 1877, Gaudí was tasked with renovating and modernizing the building from 1904 to 1906. Many say that the entire building is a work of art with architectural elements used throughout the 20th century. Plan to spend one to two hours here.

lisbon to barcelona tour

While the Sagrada Família’s construction was started in the late 1800s, the Catedral de Barcelona started construction in 1298. This gothic cathedral still operates as a church but still allows tourists to visit at certain times . Be sure to visit this cathedral to see history, art, and beautiful architecture in one building.

Barri Gótic, or the Gothic Quarter , is a neighborhood that used to be a Roman village. This area has experienced some modernization alongside historical architecture. Wander through this area to see historic Gothic buildings next to modern architecture. This area has plenty of restaurants, interesting shops, and places to sit and relax. You can either simply walk through the area or spend several hours here.

Barcelona Parks and Outdoor Areas

Park Güell is a public park that has gardens and interesting architecture throughout. The park was, again, designed by Antoni Gaudí in the early 1900s. You can buy tickets in advance and then spend a few hours wandering through the park to see the beautiful art and architecture. Many tourists make a point to visit this place to take pictures and relax in an area with beautiful scenery.

Las Ramblas is another famous landmark of Barcelona. This is a pedestrian street that is lined with trees. The street goes through downtown Barcelona’s heart and is always busy with foot traffic from locals and tourists alike. This street has plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars along the way. You can easily spend several hours walking along with the street, shopping, eating, and watching people walk by.

The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria is a large public market with its entrance on Las Ramblas. You can find food, produce, flowers, and artisan goods in this market. You can easily spend a few hours wandering through this market, but many tourists like to visit multiple times to try foods from different vendors.

Barcelona Events

If you follow international soccer (or fútbol), then you know that the Barcelona team is talented and well-loved. If you are a big soccer fan or just love the atmosphere of sporting events, you can try to catch a fútbol Game at Camp Nou Stadium . This stadium is famous for being home to the Barcelona team, and you can count on having a great time at any game here.

The Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys is another stadium in Barcelona. This stadium is home to an amateur soccer team but was originally built for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona and was renovated in 1989 for the 1992 Olympics. Today, you can catch an amateur soccer game, concert, or other events.

Events happen in Barcelona throughout the year, from music and film festivals to cultural events. You can either try to plan your trip around a fun event or see what is happening once you are there. You will likely find something fun and exciting to do on your trip to Barcelona.

Best Foods in Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is definitely known for its food. Eating in Barcelona is generally not too expensive for great meals. Famous regional foods that you should try while in Barcelona include:

  • Paella . A dish made of rice and fish. You can find this dish just about anywhere in Barcelona, but try to find a “mom and pop” restaurant rather than a chain to have a more authentic experience.
  • Jamón Ibérico . This type of ham is said to be the best in the world. This ham is cured beautifully and deliciously. You should definitely try this meat while you are in Barcelona.
  • Tapas . Tapas are small dishes of snack or appetizer food that you eat as your meal. This is a great way to try many different foods while you are visiting.

One great way to find a selection of restaurants is to do a tapas and wine walking tour like this one . We recommend doing this tour on one of your first nights in Barcelona so that you can return to any restaurants that you liked or heard about while on the tour.

There are so many options for places to stay in Barcelona, whether you want luxury or just the basics. You will be able to find the perfect accommodations for your needs anywhere in the city. Some hotel options include:

lisbon to barcelona tour

Once you decide on the activities and attractions that you want to do and see while in Barcelona, you can decide which hotel to book based on location. If you plan to get around by walking, you will want to stay at a central location. If you decide to stay outside of the city, remember that you will need to find a way to get into the city and account for travel time.

Traveling from Barcelona to Lisbon

There are several options for how you can travel between Barcelona and Lisbon. You will want to decide the best option for your trip based on your budget, schedule, and preference. In general, you can travel by:

If you have limited time and want to travel between the two cities as quickly as possible, you probably want to fly to Lisbon Airport or vice versa. TAP Air Portugal is a popular  airline  for flying between the two cities. You can expect to spend between $50 and $100 per person for a Barcelona to Lisbon flight, depending on how far in advance you purchase your ticket and when you plan to fly. The flight between the two cities is about two hours long.

Another popular transportation option is to travel by train. The journey from Barcelona to Lisbon by train usually takes a full day, so make sure you have room for this in your schedule. This option can be more expensive than flying, but you get to see more scenery between the two cities. When I did this trip, I took the overnight train and enjoyed it because it felt like I didn’t waste a full day traveling.

Lastly, you could take a bus between Barcelona and Lisbon. This option takes the longest, though you do get to see the scenery between the two cities. You can usually find inexpensive tickets for this option, making it the most budget-friendly. Keep in mind that the trip will probably take over 30 hours, so make sure it fits into your itinerary.

The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga is an ancient art museum that is definitely worth a visit. Learn about famous Portuguese artists from history at this museum. The museum has paintings, sculptures, furniture, and gardens. To see everything, you should spend about four hours here. You can spend less time if you just want to see some of the highlights.

The Museu Calouste Gulbenkian is another art museum in Lisbon. This museum features art from all over the world. Some of the key art pieces here are over 2,000 years old and hold a lot of historical significance. Like the other museums mentioned, you could spend most of one day here or less, depending on your schedule.

Best Foods in Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon has a lot to offer in terms of culinary experiences. Some of the most famous dishes to try include:

  • Bifana . This is a simple sandwich made with thin slices of pork that have been slow-cooked and placed into a roll of bread. Some eat this plain, while others add mustard and other sauces. Either way, it is delicious.
  • Caldo Verde . If you’re looking for a dish that Portugal is famous for, this would be it. It is a kale and sausage soup that you can find in pretty much any restaurant in the country.
  • Bacalhau . This is the national dish of Portugal, and though there are many different ways to make it, the dish’s base is salted cod.

Just as in Barcelona, we recommend taking a food tour through Lisbon on one of your first nights in the city. This will likely allow you to try some of these famous dishes while sampling and learning about famous restaurants from your local tour guides. Of all the best food tours in Lisbon to choose from, we recommend this one .

Tips for Traveling in Spain or Portugal

Now that you are ready to take your trip, we have compiled a few tips to help you on your vacation. From important safety tips to cultural things you should know, these tips will help you not stand out as much as a tourist and help you have an even better time on your trip.

Safety Tips

When traveling anywhere in Europe, you should know that pickpocketing is common and that tourists are often targeted. Be sure to always be aware of your surroundings. Pickpockets will sometimes work in pairs, with one person doing a street performance or other distraction while someone else pickpockets you.

To prevent this from happening to you, make sure everyone in your party is always paying attention to your surroundings and looking out for each other. You can also purchase a money belt to keep your passport and money safe. Wear this under your clothes. Lastly, don’t leave your phone or other important items in your back pocket or in a bag that doesn’t close.

Stay safe by being aware and keeping valuable items out of sight. You might think it won’t happen to you, but it could, and you will certainly stand out as a tourist and be more likely to be targeted.

Eating is an Event

Before you travel to Spain and Portugal, you should know that eating generally takes much longer than what you are accustomed to in the United States. Both lunch and dinner usually take at least one hour, usually more. In these cities, eating is an event, not a necessity. Try to lean into the culture and enjoy your meals instead of trying to rush through them.

Learn Some Spanish and Portuguese

While people living in these cities are used to tourists and will probably know some English, it is never a bad idea to learn some key phrases in the country’s language where you are planning to travel. In either language, try to learn some of these key phrases that are helpful for travelers:

  • Hello and Goodbye
  • I would like…
  • How much does this cost?
  • Where is the exit?
  • I don’t know very much Spanish/Portuguese
  • I only speak English

In Barcelona, the official languages are Catalan and Spanish . Catalan is mostly spoken in official capacities, so you will likely be fine if you only speak Spanish while you are there.

If you are learning some Portuguese, try to learn the accent for Portugal and not Brazil . While both countries technically speak the same language, the difference in accent can make the two seem like completely different languages.

Stay at an Airbnb or VRBO Property

With the rise of the sharing economy, you have the option to stay at an apartment or condo in either Barcelona or Lisbon. This gives you many more options for places to stay. Many people also agree that staying in these accommodations makes you feel more like a local and gives you a more authentic experience. These lodging options are completely safe, and you should definitely consider them for your trip.

Then pass into Portugal, where even more unforgettable moments await. Journey into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Douro Valley, pause for a port tasting in Porto and wander around the cobbled streets of Lisbon. With a local leading the way, this trip will be sure to stick with you.

Trip overview

  • Tick Madrid, Salamanca, Porto and Lisbon off your bucket list and spend afternoons wandering around narrow, cobbled streets, colourful architecture with hilltop views and glittering coasts as you wait for nightly sunsets to transform these cities into glittering havens.
  • Learn about the history and artistry of the unique Fallas festival of Valencia by meeting a professional artist in their workshop to find out how they construct these intricately detailed and often enormous statues.
  • Savour a Spanish favourite at a Madrid insititution – cinnamon and sugar-dusted churros with velvety chocolate sauce from a churreria that has over a century of expertise.
  • Feast on Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, snacks and local wines with a delicious tapas welcome dinner in Madrid, a port tasting in Porto, a bacalhau dinner in Coimbra and the unmissable pasteis de nata from the best spot in Lisbon – yum!
  • Spend a day discovering the history of Tomar – a 12th century town of relaxed streets, public gardens and the Castelo de Tomar, a Templar castle just waiting for the curious to explore its ramparts and cloisters.
  • We recommend packing light and smart for this trip as you'll be required to carry your own luggage between train stations and hotels, which can include going up and down multiple flights of stairs and across cobblestones.
  • Summer temperatures can be extreme in this region (over 40C/104F). It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Portugal, particularly its cities, are very hilly and stairs are commonplace. You will have to be able to easily lift your luggage and carry it up and down stairs and inclines, so packing light is recommended. The cobblestone streets become very slippery when wet. Some people may find Portugal's topography challenging.
  • This trip doesn't spend much time in Barcelona or Lisbon, so we recommend extending your trip to enjoy these cities to their fullest. Please speak to your booking agent about adding additional nights of accommodation to your booking.

Lisbon is a city of majesty and history, charm, and spirit. The whitewashed homes and orange-tiled rooftops of the Alfama district contrast the golden walls of Saint Gorge’s Castle. The faint aroma of the ocean sweeps in from the Atlantic in the west and the waters of the Tagus River ripple beneath the image of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos. The monument was erected to commemorate the 500th-anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, who helped usher in the Golden Age of Discovery. Images of famous Portuguese explorers, including Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco de Gama, adorn the ship-like image.

The esplanade contains a compass and mosaic map charting the world, along with the dates in which the Portuguese discovered new lands. Your flight lands at Lisbon Portela Airport. Your private transfer greets you upon your arrival and escorts you to the comforts of your hotel offering views of the riverbanks and the cobbled lanes of the historical city. Funiculars traverse the various hills and patrons of charming cafes watch passersby from patio tables. After settling into the serene charm of your hotel, you set out with your guide for an introductory walking tour of the city, leading you to treasured churches of Lisbon. Igreja da Pena was erected in the 18th century with baroque aesthetic gilding the nave and altar. The aromas of frankincense and myrrh continue to drift beneath the archways and along the vaulted ceiling, accentuating the opulent décor.

What's Included:

Fatima – An Individual Journey

The morning light washes over the golden Romanesque façade of the Catholic cathedral. The structure was erected in the 12th century and balances castellated bell towers and stunning brickwork connoting renovations over the centuries. At breakfast, you delight in the aromas of rich coffee and fresh-baked pastries covered with granulated sugar. You step out into the city with your guide eager to explore the religious history of Lisbon embodied in the Jeronimos Monastery. The grounds were established in the 16th century with exuberant Manueline architecture. Fluid stonework contains maritime motifs symbolized in iconic twisting ropes and armillary spheres. The South Portal brims with more than 40 statues decorating ornate stonework and pillars.

Images of Henry the Navigator and St. Jerome border the large, arched doorway. The vaulted ceilings of the interior loom tall and large, with a cool temperature from the stone, contrasting the Iberian sunlight outside. Your guide points out the tomb of Vasco de Gama, who blazed the sea-trail connecting Western Europe to India at the end of the 15th century. The marble monument depicts a resting, life-like image of the famous explorer clasping his hands over his heart. You can stroll amongst the cloisters to view the elaborate filigree wrapping around the courtyard. A lion-shaped fountain connects the beauty and tranquility of the cloister to the purity of St. Jerome, whose heraldic animal is the lion.

Fatima – In Honor of the Shrine

The golden sunlight of the Iberian Peninsula washes over the spire of the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. Thin, rounded stairs texture the colonnade around the main plaza. At breakfast, the scent of coffee and milk accompanies the aroma of buttery cakes stuffed with cream. You stroll along the monument of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the center of the plaza, which was erected above a natural spring. Make your way to the town of Tomar, an enchanting town on the banks of the Nabão River. You can hear the water rushing against the small arches of the bridge. The sunlight glints against the whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs of the buildings framing the main square of Praça da Republica.

The 15th-century church maintains an opulent entrance in the tradition of Manueline architectural style. The Castle-Monastery of the Knights Templar was erected in the mid-12th century and remains a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. The portal contains intricate, dramatic sculptures setting the tone of the structure and its interior. Buttresses and round windows adorn the upper echelons of the edifice, reminiscent of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Eight columns frame the walking space, each adorned with capitals depicting animals or produce. The Window of the Chapter House is richly sculptured, with a wealth of detail illustrating Portugal’s power over the sea. Images of sails, mariners, and knots add to elegant and proud motifs.

Santiago de Compostela – Inside Portuguese Rome

After breakfast, you leave Fatima behind, watching the white spire of the basilica fade over the horizon. The landscape shimmers with cork trees and sporadic vineyards rushing along the hills before you reach Braga. The city is often referred to as “Portuguese Rome,” due to its ancient narrow lanes, public plazas, and lavish churches. Bells chime at all hours of the day emitting a sense of the city’s religious devotion. The imposing central cathedral was built in the 11th century but completed more than a century later. The eclectic style of the church derives from its renovations from the 16th century onwards.

The interior shimmers with a gilded wood choir and an 18th-century organ adorned with intricate motifs. Just outside of the city center stands the Bom Jesus do Monte, an impressive sanctuary surrounded by the lush greenery of a public park. The aroma of fresh grass fills the air. The baroque 18th-century façade stands atop the plateau decorated with a unique granite staircase. A series of chapels along the zigzagging stairwell shows the 14 Stations of the Cross. Fountains trickle along the edges of the stairwell amongst statues depicting biblical figures and allegories. From the plateau, you have stunning views of the gardens, fountains, and grottos decorating the stairway. You can also enjoy the view circling the church, leading outwards to the beaches of Esposende.

Santiago de Compostela – On the Path of Pilgrims

At breakfast, you think back to your time inside the St. James’ Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The scent of myrrh brings a whirlwind of images as well as the picture of a devoted crowd eager to view the remains of the Apostle James. He is located beneath the high altar, making the city one of the top pilgrimage destinations in the Middle Ages. After the meal, you set out along the pilgrimage route to follow a portion of the trail known as the Cabo Finisterre. The route pre-dates Christianity by more than half a millennium. Pagans would venture to the edge of Finisterre where they believed the sun “died.” You make your way to the windswept cape where historically, pilgrims would burn their robes at the end of their long journey.

The breeze carries the aroma of the sea across the rugged coastline speckled with short grass. A lighthouse adorns the coastal summit above the rocks. Return to Santiago to follow a portion of the St. James’ Way. The trail gained notoriety in the 9th century with routes connecting all of Europe to Santiago to reach the tomb of St. James. Scallop shells adorn the city, the trail, and hikers as the sign of the devout pilgrim. The Museum of Pilgrimages offers insight into the history of the Apostle and the pilgrims who have steadfastly followed in the footsteps of St. James. Ancient artifacts and religious objects from Jaffa, Israel shed light on Jacobean worship.

Burgos – Magnificence in the Cathedral

The orange-tiled roofs of Old Town Santiago shimmer in the sunlight in the morning. Cafes line the cobbled lanes of the antique city fill the air with the aromas of sponge cake and hot chocolate. Your private transfer meets you at the hotel and escorts you to Burgos; a city celebrated for its marvelous cathedral and medieval city center. The city was once the capital of the Castile-Leon region between the 10th and 14th centuries. The pleasant ambiance emanates from the castle and flowing waters of the Arlanzon River. The Arco de Santa Maria has guarded the entrance to Old Town since the 14th century.

The large archway and semicircular towers give the gateway the appearance of a castle entrance. The cathedral was erected over a 500-year period stretching between the 13th and 18th centuries. The vast Gothic edifice maintains a western facade adorned with three-dimensional archways and a rose window. Spires adorn the elegant towers soaring above the main plaza. Moorish features decorate the nave near the elaborate dome, including a stunning vaulted ceiling. Candles flicker along the votive and the gilded edges of the 16th-century golden staircase layer opulence over piety.

Barcelona – Treasures of Zaragoza

The morning casts light on the traditional conservative architecture of Burgos, with a stunning skyline and somber gray stones of the historic center. The streets return to life amidst the Romanesque spires of the cathedral and hidden lanes lined with celebrated restaurants. The aromas of bonbons and almonds drift out of the cafes, mixing with the herbaceous scent of the trees shading the riverside Paseo del Espolon. Your guide escorts you from the hotel to Barcelona, stopping en route to explore the stunning historic gems of Zaragoza. Roman ruins provide glimpses into the life of the ancient settlement now surrounded by the vibrant, contemporary streets. Pipes, old market walls, and remnants of the theater decorate the galleries inside the Museo del Foro de Caesaraugusta.

You make your way to the soaring towers gracing the grand edifice of Our Lady of Pillar Basilica. The 17th-century baroque wonder rises above the cityscape, visible from across the banks of the Ebro River. Colorful trees blossom near the entrance, providing a sweet scent to the public plaza. The basilica was erected on the spot where Mary descended atop a marble pillar to speak to Santiago in the 1st century AD. A portion of the original pillar is exposed in the chapel’s western side where devout visitors brush their lips against the polished figure. An alabaster altarpiece was crafted in the 16th century and adorns the western wall of the choir.

Barcelona – A Culmination of Devotion

Barcelona has an atmosphere of relaxation and elegance, splendor, and charm. The breeze carries the aroma of the Mediterranean Sea. Medieval architecture in the Gothic Quarter shimmers with golden stones and apparitions of dragons protruding from the cathedral columns. The unique aesthetic of Antoni Gaudi’s architectural designs provides visions from storybooks to life. Your guide leads you on an encompassing tour of the legendary city, offering panoramas from the summit of Montjuïc, at more than 4,000 feet above sea level, and images of the renowned Spanish artist Pablo Picasso inside the eponymous museum. Your tour culminates at the iconic Sagrada Familia Basilica, which broke ground in the late 19th century and will be completed on Gaudi’s death centennial.

Gaudi designed the edifice to comply with his unique vision of intricate detail and lofty grandeur. The spires adorn the basilica at heights reaching 560 feet above the city streets. Allegorical statues decorate the Nativity Façade, which faces east to catch first light over Barcelona. You notice a tortoise and turtle supporting the thick columns flanking the doorway. The nave captivates you with pastel stalactites resembling a colorful cave. The indentations honeycomb the ceiling for a unique texture and unforgettable glint in the natural light. The organ installed in the presbytery contains nearly 1,500 pipes to counteract the acoustics of the vast and uniquely designed interior.

Barcelona – Reaffirmation of Wonder

Cafes open their doors in the morning the aromas of pistachio and cream. The relaxed lull of the waves along the golden beaches filters into the lifestyle of the city. You find the scent of frothy cappuccino filling the dining room of the hotel at breakfast, accompanied by an enticing aroma of cream-filled pastries. Vendors in the colorful mark of La Boqueria call out to passersby, promoting their fruits, vegetables, and artisan cheeses. The cathedral of Santa Eulalia in the Gothic Quarter rises out of a maze of narrow lanes with illustrious Romanesque architecture crafted in the 13th century. Your private transfer meets you in the hotel lobby when you are ready, escorting you to Barcelona—El Prat Airport for your flight home.

Lisbon, Portugal

lisbon to barcelona tour

Arrive in Lisbon where you will be met at the airport by your private driver who will transfer you directly to your centrally-located Lisbon hotel for 3 nights.

Lisbon - which emerged from a terrible recession energised and up for anything - has found itself in the wonderful position of being Europe's new capital of hip. As construction cranes start to dot the city's skyline again, once-decaying palaces and mansions are being renovated and restored to their former glory as hipster hangouts, from gourmet dining halls to charming small hotels ; and the city's once-sleazy waterfront along the Tejo River is in the midst of a wonderful makeover. On a visit to Lisbon, you’ll notice that the city retains a strong sense of nostalgia—keeping close watch on preserving the past even as it grows and expands.  Whether you while away the hours with a coffee on one of the beautiful tiled squares or stroll and mooch around the winding side streets of the Bairro Alto, there is so much to appeal to the curious traveller in Lisbon. Portugal’s capital welcomes travelers to a decadent old world anew, where ancient castles meet modern art galleries and sleepy old shopfronts give way to buzzing nightclubs.

Porto, Portugal

lisbon to barcelona tour

Today you'll be transferred to Lisbon train station to board the train to Porto .

Arrive in Porto where you’ll be met at the station by your private driver who will transfer you directly to your centrally-located 4 star hotel, your base for the next three nights.

UNESCO-listed Porto is an edgier city than Lisbon with a very different pace and identity. Conde Nast Traveller describes it by highlighting the old-town neighbourhoods of Vitoria, Ribeira and Miragaia where “clog-makers jostle with tin-beaters, sewing-machine repairmen and other practitioners of long-forgotten trades.” The Guardian agrees that the “past defines much of Porto’s look, but her people have found a way to get on and look forward with hope and panache.” It’s the hope and panache that makes Porto so special. At times, you need to scratch a little under the surface – but it’s so rewarding when you do.

The River Douro is certainly the most dominant feature of the city and the whole North region, in fact. The Ribeira is one of the most popular and most photographed areas in the city along with the bridges. Keep an eye out for the old fashioned ‘rabelo’ boats traditionally used for the transportation of port.  Inside Porto, you’ll find lots to explore including the Clerigos Tower (its 200-or-so steps up provide you with one of the best views of the entire city and the Douro). Also the neo-classical Palacio da Bolsa (Stock Exchange), the San Francisco church best known for its gilded Rococo and the Manueline-style and the Church of Santa Clara.

This afternoon you'll enjoy an unescorted but pre-booked visit to a wine cave in Vilanova de Gaia (a short walk across the river from Porto) and a Wine Tasting afterwards. During the wine tasting, you will also experience a live Fado performance , which is the typical melancholic style of traditional music from Portugal.

  • Private transfer from Lisbon Hotel to Lisbon train station
  • Train from Lisbon to Porto – 1st class
  • Private transfer from Porto train station to your Porto Hotel
  • Port Winery visit including tasting in Vilanova de Gaia (opposite riverbank to Porto)
  • Pre-Booked Fado show in Porto (1 hour duration)

lisbon to barcelona tour

This morning your local expert guide will meet you at your hotel for a private guided tour of Porto, Portugal’s second largest city.   Your walking tour includes the 13th century cathedral , set on a rocky outcrop; the exterior of the 18th century San Joao and the magnificent church of Sao Francisco .  You'll also see the Clérigos tower which is Porto’s landmark and panoramic view point dating back to the 18th Century and the 19th century stock exchange Palace.

Following your morning tour we suggest a light lunch before commencing in the late afternoon (4:40pm approx.) a fun, small group, gastronomic tour of Porto . You'll be taken off the beaten path to experience how the city’s past is influencing its future in terms of local cuisine, architecture and culture.  This food tour will give you the opportunity to taste traditional Portuguese dishes, regional table wines, local pastries, and, of course, Port wines . You will also have the opportunity to meet passionate local families in their small restaurants, cafes and bars. This walking tour lasts roughly 3 ½ hours and you will visit 7 unique tasting locations , where the new generation of locals are reviving Porto’s gastronomy. You will also receive a mini-masterclass in Port wine .

  • Private Half-Day Walking tour in Porto with expert, English speaking guide
  • Pre-Booked entrance tickets for Lello bookshop & Clerigos tower
  • Guided Gastronomic walking tour with a small group. Includes delicious tapas and drinks plus a mini-masterclass in port wine (10 participants maximum)
  • Tapas style dinner

lisbon to barcelona tour

Following breakfast meet-up once more with your local expert guide and driver for a full day private excursion to the picturesque Minho region , the greenest region in Portugal is also the birthplace of Portugal and of the unique vinho verde wine .  The region is extremely lush and provides exceptional growing conditions for camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas which reach enormous proportions and afford impressive displays amidst the oak and chestnut woods that fill the valleys of the Minho.   Tour the emblematic towns of Braga and Guimarães (UNESCO)  both of which have well preserved castles, city walls and elaborate churches. Their mediaeval centres have charming narrow streets and immaculately cared for public gardens that are lovely to explore.

  • Private full day guided tour with an expert, English speaking driver-guide
  • Transport in a comfortable touring vehicle
  • Pre-Booked entrance tickets for the Castle in Guimaraes
  • Pre-Booked entrance tickets for the Duke’s Palace in Guimaraes

Small group Tour of Lisbon & Barcelona

Join Odyssey Traveller as we explore the history, culture, architecture, and cuisine of the cities of Lisbon and Barcelona over 21 days. This is a small group tour for up to 16 travellers. Join a group of like minded mature and senior travellers as a couple or solo traveller to explore and live briefly in two of Europes great historic cities.

This trip will not be confined to the two major cities, however, as we will also take excursions to famous heritage towns--such as Sintra and Montserrat--and smaller medieval and seaside towns--such as Nazare , Mafra , and Girona --that are not normally included in other commercial tours of the Iberian Peninsula. We will spend 10 nights each in Lisbon and Barcelona, staying in centrally located hotels close the cities' main sights for leisurely sightseeing, and using them as our base for our day trips as we venture deeper into Portugal and Spain . We will use private coaches and public transport when appropriate, and go on walking tours to experience the pulse and vibrancy of the cities. As always, participants on this small group tour will have the services of an Odyssey Program Leader and local guides who will share their knowledge of the places we will visit.

In addition to our history and cultural trips, we will also have time for vacation as the itinerary includes plenty of free time to relax or experience Lisbon and Barcelona on our own.

We begin our three-week tour in Lisbon, the capital and largest city of Portugal , sitting on the Atlantic coast and serving as the country’s chief port. It is also distinguished as the westernmost capital city in continental Europe. The city’s name is a variant of Olisipo, which may have been derived from the pre-Roman name for the Tagus River (Lisso). Lisbon’s history has been shaped by the sea . As a port city, Lisbon has been a gateway to the wider world , molded by a succession of different cultures. In 711, Lisbon, along with most of present-day Spain and Portugal came under the control of the Muslim Umayyad Caliphate. During this period, Lisbon became one of the largest cities in Europe. The city’s new rulers improved the fortifications of the castle and built town walls that still remain in place. Lisbon’s oldest extant neighbourhood, Alfama – from the Arabic al-Hamma, meaning ‘public baths’ – was built in this period.

The city reached its heights after the Reconquista and during the Age of Exploration . It developed its own architectural style, Manueline, named after its monarch Manuel I. This architectural style, seen only in Portugal in the 16th century, is characterised by rich and lavish ornamentation and nautical themes, such as moldings encrusted with carved barnacles and nautical instruments over windows and doors. The style flourished only for a few decades, bridging the Gothic style and the Renaissance and Mannerist styles that became popular in Portugal.

In 1755, Lisbon was totally devastated by an earthquake that destroyed its buildings and killed up to 60,000 people. The city rebuilt itself, and on this tour we will learn more about its history.

Lisbon Tour Highlights

We will visit several destinations listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, including the iconic Belem district in Lisbon, the colourful Sintra historic centre filled with castles in the style of 19th century Romantic architecture, the medieval town of Obidos and the impressive Monastery of Batalha built to commemorate the 1385 Portuguese victory over the Castilians.

We will experience a stunning Fado performance at a local restaurant and visit the birthplace of Fado, Mouraria. Fado ("fate") is a type of Portuguese expressive and melancholic musical performance which dates back to the 1830s.

We will enjoy spectacular views of the cities we will visit, from famous viewpoints in Lisbon, and Cape Roca in the westernmost point of mainland Europe, which provides a panoramic view of the Atlantic. In Nazare , we will have a guided half-day tour to learn more about the town's fishing traditions and view the beach famous among surfers the world over for its giant waves.

In addition to these experiences, we will also sample Portugal's culinary offerings. We will have a special visit to the Fabrica dos Pasteis de Belem, which has been baking the Portuguese custard tart since 1837. We will have chance to taste this creamy pastry--its secret recipe guarded since the 19th century--and stroll inside the beautiful café-factory.

Lisbon's history is entwined with that of Barcelona 's. In 1578 the Portuguese kingdom’s young king died on the battlefield and plunged Portugal into a succession crisis. The crisis of succession lasted two years. Emerging victorious was King Philip II of Spain, whose claim to the throne was through his mother, Isabella, the second child of Manuel I. Philip II united the Spanish and Portuguese crowns, putting the entire Iberian Peninsula, as well as Portuguese colonies abroad, under the rule of Spain for six centuries.

Barcelona has over 2,000 years of histor y, having been ruled by Romans, Visigoths and Franks. The city itself was founded as a military camp by the Romans at the end of the 1st century and named Barcino. It grew into a major trading city in the 12th century after the union of Catalonia and Aragon. It is now the sixth largest city in Europe, a dazzling seaside city alive with culture, colour and cuisine. Today, the city is one of Europe's most popular destinations, yet retains its unique culture and lifestyle.

Barcelona Tour Highlights

We will view the major sights in the heart of the city, including the many monuments designed by acclaimed architect Antonio Gaudi . We will visit its central square, Plaça de Catalunya, walk down tree-lined Las Ramblas and explore the medieval-era streets of the Gothic Quarter.

We will travel down to the foot of a striking multi-peaked mountain range to visit Monserrat (Montserrat in Catalan means “saw mountain”), and travel by cable car to an abbey nestled in the mountain to visit the Black Madonna. We will have a guided tour and tasting at a cava winery in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia. We will explore the medieval towns of Besalu and Girona . Fans of the show Game of Thrones may recognise Girona's Arab Baths and its cathedral as some scenes of the show were filmed here.

On our first full day in Lisbon, we will go on a guided tour of the neighbourhoods of Alfama and Graca, two of the oldest districts in the city.

We will stroll through the cobbled streets of Alfama and enjoy spectacular views of the city from several viewpoints. Many of the areas can be reached on foot, but as there are several steep streets we can take the tram in certain sections of the tour. This historical tour will include

  • entrance to the 12th-century Lisbon Cathedral , the oldest cathedral in the city
  • Museum of Aljube , which used to be a prison and is now a museum dedicated to the memory of the struggle against the dictatorship which governed Portugal from 1926 to 1974
  • Museum of Roman Theatre , unearthed ruins of the ancient Roman theatre of the city of Olisipo, Lisbon’s origins
  • Church of Sao Vicente de Fora , known for having the world’s largest collection of baroque tile art
  • Museum of Fado , dedicated to Fado (“fate”), a type of Portuguese expressive and melancholic musical performance traditionally associated with pubs and cafes. The Lisbon style of Fado dates back to the 1830s, and we will experience this performance on Day 3

We will end the day’s tour in the area of the São Jorge Castle (no internal visit) to view the Moorish castle overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River.

Dinner is at own expense. (B)

Day 3: Lisbon

Today we will go on a morning guided tour of Fronteira Palace , built in the 17th century and considered one of the most beautiful residences in Lisbon with its spectacular decorative tiles, frescoed panels, and works of art. This private residence of the Marquesses of Fronteira was built in 1671 as a hunting pavilion of the 1st Marquis of Fronteira, Dom João de Mascarenhas.

In the afternoon, we will take a guided tour of the historic Mouraria neighbourhood at the foot of São Jorge (St. George) Castle, birthplace of Lisbon Fado and a vibrant art scene. Mouraria or “Moorish Quarter” was named as such as this became the sanctuary for Muslims after Afonso I reclaimed the city and banished Muslims living inside the castle walls. It continued to become a sanctuary for immigrants through the years, and today it is Lisbon’s most culturally diverse districts. Among the many sights we will see on our tour include the Escadinhas de São Cristovão which has walls of murals dedicated to Fado, and the home of singer Maria Severa Onofriana whose performances brought fame to Fado and lifted her to near-mythical status in Mouraria. She died from tuberculosis at the age of 26 in 1846, and today her old apartment is a fado venue.

In the evening we will have dinner and experience a performance of Fado at a local Fado house (possibly in the cosy Mesa de Frades, which used to be a chapel). (B, D)

Day 4: Lisbon

Today we will focus on the Portuguese Age of Discovery. We will spend the full day in the Belem neighbourhood, a village located at the mouth of the Tagus River, where Portuguese fleets departed to reach the Atlantic and sail around the globe.

Many of the city’s iconic monuments are located here. We will have a special visit to the Fabrica dos Pasteis de Belem , which has been baking the Portuguese custard tart since 1837. We will have chance to taste this creamy pastry–its secret recipe guarded since the 19th century–and stroll inside the beautiful café-factory.

We will move on to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites–the Jeronimos Monastery , a former monastery of the order of St. Jerome that has since been secularised; and the Tower of Belem , built around 1514 on the banks of the river to defend the port of Lisbon.

We will also explore the Berardo Museum , a museum of modern and contemporary art, and Coaches Museum , which houses a valuable collection of horse-drawn carriages.

Dinner tonight is at own expense. (B)

Day 5: Lisbon

Today we will enjoy a full day tour of Chiado, Principe Real and Estrela, newer neighbourhoods that offer upscale shops and glimpses into Lisbon’s past. Among the monuments we will visit are the ruins of the Carmo Convent , a Catholic convent destroyed during the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and which now remains as a reminder of the tragedy. It now houses the Carmo Archaeological Museum , which is dedicated to Portuguese history.

While Carmo Convent was destroyed, Igreja de Sao Roque survived the massive earthquake, and we will visit this as well. Sao Roque was the first Jesuit church constructed in Portugal.

There will also be time to visit Lisbon’s landmark basilica, Basilica da Estrela , have food and perhaps go shopping in Campo de Ourique, and explore the National Museum of Ancient Art, Portugal’s national art museum. (B)

Day 6: Lisbon

Today is a free day to spend at our leisure. Use this time to relax or see more of the city. (B)

Day 7: Lisbon - Sintra - Lisbon

From Lisbon, we travel to the city of Sintra , a UNESCO heritage town famous for its 19th century Romantic architecture. Its historic centre is listed as a World Heritage Site. It has many royal palaces and gardens, and early today, to avoid the crowds, we will explore the colourful Pena Palace , located at the top of the hill in the Sintra Mountains. It has a mix of styles running the architectural gamut from neo-Gothic to neo-Renaissance, and is celebrated as the grandest example of Romantic architecture.

We will stop for lunch, possibly at Lawrence’s Hotel restaurant. Lawrence’s Hotel is the oldest hotel on the Iberian Peninsula, and known for lodging several important personalities such as Lord Byron and Portuguese writer Eca de Queiroz.

Still in Sintra, we will visit the magical Quinta da Regaleira , a palace and a chapel set on a hillside, which also showcases an eclectic mix of architectural styles. The property also has fountains, grottoes, statues, caves, and ponds connected above-ground through pathways and below-ground through tunnels lit with fairy lights. We will see the romantic Monserrate Gardens and Palace, which blends Moorish Revival and neo-Gothic architectural styles, before driving back to Lisbon.

Day 8: Lisbon - Obidos - Nazare - Batalha - Lisbon

Today we will drive to Obidos , where we will enjoy a sightseeing tour. Obidos grew from a Roman settlement and a Moorish fortification, until it was extensively remodelled under Dinis I. Dinis I offered the town to his wife, Isabel, in the 13th century, and its architecture was enriched in the following centuries.

We then continue to the fishing town of Nazare . In Nazare, we will have a guided tour to learn more about the town’s fishing traditions and view the beach famous among surfers the world over for its giant waves. It is not unusual to see fisher women here still wearing traditional clothing: skirt with seven colourful layers (said to represent the days of the week), wooden clogs, and black headscarf.

Before heading back to Lisbon, we will stop at Batalha to visit its impressive monastery built in the Gothic and Manueline (Portuguese Gothic) styles. The Monastery of Batalha was built to commemorate the Portuguese victory over the Castilians at the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota, ending the Castilian plan to capture the Portuguese throne. (B)

Day 9: Lisbon - Mafra - Ericeira - Azenhas do Mar - Cape Roca - Lisbon

Today we will go on an excursion to Mafra on the west coast, famous for its UNESCO-listed Palace-Convent, an imposing structure conceived by King João V in 1711. The Italian Baroque edifice, built from wealth generated by the gold from the Portuguese colony of Brazil, houses the king’s and queen’s palaces, the royal chapel, a Franciscan monastery, and a huge library containing 36,000 volumes, surrounded by a garden and royal hunting park.

From Mafra we will continue to Ericeira , a beautiful seaside town perched on a cliff overlooking beaches. After some free time exploring the town, the tour will go through the charming village of Azenhas do Mar with its whitewashed houses, and we will stop for a bit to enjoy the stunning views.

We will then transfer to Cape Roca , the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Here, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Atlantic before transferring back to Lisbon. (B)

Day 10: Lisbon

This is another free day we can spend at our leisure. Use this time to pack or do some last-minute Lisbon sightseeing as we will be heading to Barcelona tomorrow! (B)

Day 11: Lisbon - Barcelona

Accommodation: Sercotel Amister Art Hotel or similar

We will be taken by coach to the airport to fly to Barcelona .

Upon arrival at Barcelona, we will be transferred to our hotel, where we will also have our group dinner to begin the second leg of our twin city excursions. (B, D)

Day 12: Barcelona

Today will be spent exploring the vibrant city of Barcelona, particularly the Gothic Quarter and the Born neighbourhood, taking advantage of Barcelona’s public transport. A local guide will then take us on a tour of the city. We will visit its central square, Plaça de Catalunya and walk down tree-lined Las Ramblas. Among the places we will explore in the medieval-era streets of the Gothic Quarter are:

  • the Jewish Quarter , which has Spain’s oldest synagogue
  • the 15th-century Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi
  • Barcelona Cathedral, seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona
  • Museum of the History of Barcelona
  • Basilica Santa Maria Del Mar , an outstanding example of Catalan Gothic

Day 13: Barcelona

Today we will be focusing on the Spanish Civil War. A local guide will take us through a series of sights relating to the war, explaining their relevance and the enormous impact of the conflict on Barcelona itself. The Spanish Civil War began in 1936 and continued until 1939, when the fascist leader Francisco Franco defeated the Republican forces and declared victory. Barcelona was one of the final cities to fall to Franco’s rule, after his invasion of Catalonia. The half-day tour will end with a visit to Castell de Montjuïc , an old hilltop military fortress dating back to the 17th century, and which was used as a prison during the Civil War.

In the afternoon, we will have a tour of Montjuïc , including entrance to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya .

Our evening can be spent at leisure. We suggest staying to watch the music and light show at the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc before heading back to the hotel. (B)

Day 14: Barcelona

We will go on a market tour of La Boqueria Market, which dates back to the 13th century and a showcase of Barcelona’s gastronomic delights. This will be followed by a cooking class, where we will learn how to prepare traditional cuisine. Lunch will be the sumptuous dishes we will prepare in the cooking class.

We will have some free time until we meet again in the evening for dinner and a flamenco show. (B, L, D)

Day 15: Barcelona

The focus of today’s tour is Barcelona’s most famous resident, Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926). Barcelona is an architecturally wondrous city and perhaps the greatest influence on the city’s style was architect Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi’s style is distinctive and striking. One of his most famous works is the Casa Batlló , a strange skeletal house that is extraordinarily beautiful both inside and out. The Batlló family, who commissioned the house, put no limitations on the architect. It is now open to the public. We will also see the famous Sagrada Familia and the colourful Park Guell. We will also see the unusual Casa Mila also known as La Pedrera or “the stone quarry” due to its rough-hewn appearance. This was the last private residence Gaudi designed. (B)

Day 16: Barcelona

This is a free day to relax or to go exploring the city on your own. (B)

Day 17: Barcelona

This morning we will take a guided tour of the Palau de la Musica Catalana, a concert hall with striking modernist architecture. In the afternoon, we will visit the Picasso Museum, which houses one of the most extensive collections of Pablo Picasso’s artwork, and Palau Guell, a mansion designed by Gaudí for the industrial tycoon Eusebi Güell and another great example of Gaudi’s unique architectural imagination.

Day 18: Barcelona - Montserrat - Sant Sadurni d’Anoia - Barcelona

Today is a full-day excursion to Montserrat. The city is located at the foot of the striking multi-peaked mountain range of the same name (Montserrat in Catalan means “saw mountain”). We will be visiting the Santa Maria de Montserrat on the mountain to view the Virgin of Montserrat, one of the Black Madonnas of Europe. To reach the Benedictine abbey and basilica, we will be taking a cable car ride that will also give us a panoramic view of the city.

This will be followed by a guided tour and tasting at a cava winery in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia before returning to our hotel. (B)

Day 19: Barcelona

Today is a free day to relax before our final full day of sightseeing in the city. (B)

Day 20: Barcelona - Girona - Besalu - Barcelona

Accommodation: Sercotel Amister Art Hotel

Today we will venture out of Barcelona to the ancient Catalan city of Girona to explore the town. Its Museum of Jewish History documents a long history of Judaism in the city, which flourished in the 12th century. It also tells a fascinating story of the city’s history. The Arab Baths are a 12th-century construction inspired by Roman baths and which are still largely intact. We will also see the beautiful Girona Cathedral with its 91 stone steps. Fans of the show Game of Throne s may recognise the Arab Baths and the cathedral steps as some scenes were filmed here.

On the way back to Barcelona we will stop at Besalu , a magnificent example of a charming medieval town.

In the evening we will sit down as a group at a local restaurant for our farewell dinner. (B, D)

Day 21: Barcelona

The end of breakfast also marks the end of the tour and our services. (B)

Queen of the sea: a history of lisbon.

Barry Hatton

Lisbon's charm is legendary, but its vibrant 2,000-year history is not widely known, from its Roman legacy to its centuries under Moorish rule. Its journey from port town to Portugal's capital was not always smooth sailing--in 1755 the city was devastated by the largest earthquake ever to strike modern Europe, followed by a catastrophic tsunami and a six-day inferno that turned sand to glass. Barry Hatton unearths these forgotten memories in a vivid account of Lisbon's colourful past and present, bringing to life the 1147 siege during the Iberian reconquista , the assassination of the king, the founding of a republic and the darkness of a modern dictatorship. He reveals the rich, international heritage of Portugal's metropolis--the gateway to the Atlantic and the unrivalled Queen of the Sea.

This is not a proper guidebook. Think of it as a checklist scribbled on a napkin by a friend who lives in Barcelona and would like you to see the best of the city. Quickly plan your itinerary here – museums, coffee stops, lunch and dinner, a bit of shopping – and hit the streets well-prepared. We’ve included more than 180 tips on restaurants, bars, cafes, landmarks and things to do, a primer on Barcelona and Catalonia, a few gift ideas, basic travel information and several beautiful maps to get your bearings right.

Forgotten Places: Barcelona and the Spanish Civil War

A guide to Barcelona in the Spanish Civil War, beginning in the 19th century with the conditions and movements which led to the revolution of 1936, and ending with the fall of the city on 26th January 1939 when Franco's tanks drove down the Diagonal and set about destroying everything the Republic had built. Stories from the aftermath of the war, the exile and the Franco regime are also included. In addition with dealing with the more obvious themes such as anarchism, the Spanish Republic, Catalonia, George Orwell, the aerial bombing, and the May Days, etc, the book also looks at themes such as the Zoo during the Civil War, the American Sixth Fleet in the city, Barça, urbanism, Nazis in Barcelona, Robert Capa, the Spanish in the Holocaust, poster art...

Intertwined in the text are contemporary quotes and a few personal stories of people I have met who experienced the war or its aftermath. There are also biographies of characters such as Andreu Nin and Lluís Companys.

A Concise History of Spain

William D. Phillips Jr and Carla Rahn Phillips

The rich cultural and political life of Spain has emerged from its complex history, from the diversity of its peoples, and from continual contact with outside influences. This book traces that history from prehistoric times to the present, focusing particularly on culture, society, politics, and personalities. Written in an engaging style, it introduces readers to the key themes that have shaped Spain's history and culture. These include its varied landscapes and climates; the impact of waves of diverse human migrations; the importance of its location as a bridge between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and Europe and Africa; and religion, particularly militant Catholic Christianity and its centuries of conflict with Islam and Protestantism, as well as debates over the place of the Church in modern Spain. Illustrations, maps, and a guide to further reading, major cultural figures, and places to see, make the history of this fascinating country come alive.

The Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews, and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain

Maria Rosa Menocal

A brilliant and fascinating portrait of medieval Spain explores the golden age when Muslims, Jews, and Christians lived together in an atmosphere of tolerance

The Story of Spain: The Dramatic History of Europe's Most Fascinating Country

Mark R. Williams

The book is a popular history of Spain and the Spanish Empire from prehistoric times to the present day. It provides description and analysis of political, social, economic and cultural events over the centuries, which together shaped the history of this distinctive country. The book offers 60 illustrations and maps, including 16 pages of color photographs, as well as lists of historic places to visit at the end of each chapter. There is a dynastic chart, suggested readings, and index.

Muslim Spain and Portugal: A Political History of al-Andalus

Hugh Kennedy

This is the first study in English of the political history of Muslim Spain and Portugal, based on Arab sources. It provides comprehensive coverage of events across the whole of the region from 711 to the fall of Granada in 1492. Up till now the history of this region has been badly neglected in comparison with studies of other states in medieval Europe. When considered at all, it has been largely written from Christian sources and seen in terms of the Christian Reconquest. Hugh Kennedy raises the profile of this important area, bringing the subject alive with vivid translations from Arab sources. This will be fascinating reading for historians of medieval Europe and for historians of the middle east drawing out the similarities and contrasts with other areas of the Muslim world.

Journey to Portugal: In Pursuit of Portugal's History and Culture

Jose Saramago

When José Saramago decided to write a book about Portugal, his only desire was that it be unlike all other books on the subject, and in this he has certainly succeeded. Recording the events and observations of a journey across the length and breadth of the country he loves dearly, Saramago brings Portugal to life as only a writer of his brilliance can. Forfeiting the usual sources such as tourist guides and road maps, he scours the country with the eyes and ears of an observer fascinated by the ancient myths and history of his people. Whether it be an inaccessible medieval fortress set on a cliff, a wayside chapel thick with cobwebs, or a grand mansion in the city, the extraordinary places of this land come alive. Always meticulously attentive to those elements of ancient Portugal that persist today, he examines the country in its current period of rapid transition and growth. Journey to Portugal is an ode to a country and its rich traditions.

Conquerors: How Portugal Forged the First Global Empire

Roger Crowley

In Empires of the Sea and City of Fortune, New York Times bestselling author Roger Crowley established himself as our generation’s preeminent historian of the great European seafaring empires, and the go-to author for post-Crusade clashes of East and West. Now, in Conquerors, Crowley gives us the epic story of the emergence of Portugal, a small, poor nation that enjoyed a century of maritime supremacy thanks to the daring and navigational skill of its explorers—a tactical advantage no other country could match. Portugal’s discovery of a sea route to India, campaign of imperial conquest over Muslim rulers, and domination of the spice trade would forever disrupt the Mediterranean and build the first global economy.

Crowley relies on letters and eyewitness testimony to tell the story of tiny Portugal’s rapid and breathtaking rise to power. Conquerors reveals the Império Português in all of its splendor and ferocity, bringing to life the personalities of the enterprising and fanatical house of Aviz. Figures such as King Manuel “the Fortunate,” João II “the Perfect Prince,” marauding governor Afonso de Albuquerque, and explorer Vasco da Gama juggled their private ambitions and the public aims of the empire, often suffering astonishing losses in pursuit of a global fortune. Also central to the story of Portugal’s ascent was its drive to eradicate Islamic culture and establish a Christian empire in the Indian Ocean. Portuguese explorers pushed deep into the African continent in search of the mythical Christian king Prester John, and they ruthlessly besieged Indian port cities in their attempts to monopolize trade.

The discovery of a route to India around the horn of Africa was not only a brilliant breakthrough in navigation but heralded a complete upset of the world order. For the next century, no European empire was more ambitious, no rulers more rapacious than the kings of Portugal. In the process they created the first long-range maritime empire and set in motion the forces of globalization that now shape our world. At Crowley’s hand, the complete story of the Portuguese empire and the human cost of its ambition can finally be told.

The event put Nazare on the map and surfers flocked to the picturesque coastal village desperate to catch the giant waves that many locals have spent years avoiding. For travellers, it is a great spot to relax and eat fresh fish while taking in the beautiful scenery and watching surfers do their bit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lisbon and Barcelona

When is the best time to visit the iberian peninsular.

The best time to visit Spain and Portgual is during the spring and fall, offering the traveller the best combination of good weather, fewer crowds, but a lively time in the cities with lots of activities to choose from. At Odyssey Traveller, we make it a point to travel during this “shoulder season”, the months between peak season and low season; this is why our small group tours to Barcelona and Lisbon depart in May (spring) and September (fall). This schedule avoids the massive crowds in April travelling to Catholic Spain for Easter, the unbearably hot days of August, and the sub-zero temperatures of a Spanish winter.

What kind of architecture will you come across in Spain?

The history of Spanish architecture is shaped by Spain’s successive rulers. The Romans and the Visigoths left behind their distinctive styles and building techniques. Moorish invasion in the 8th century brought Islamic influences to the Iberian Peninsula, which eventually gave rise to the Mudejar style (12th to 17th centuries) which was a blending of European Christian and Islamic influences in architecture. For the most part, Spain was also influenced by the architectural movements of the Continent, but in the 17th century, it would develop its own vernacular strand of Baroque, called Spanish Baroque. Baroque, as we’ve written before, is characterised by elaborate designs, luxurious materials, and ornate extravagance, and had its roots in Renaissance Rome and spread from Italy to the rest of continental Europe. Spanish Baroque, commonly seen in religious buildings, was at times more elaborate and indulgent than the Baroque style that developed on the Continent.

Of course, discussion of Spanish architecture will not be complete without mentioning Antoni Gaudi, whose unique style was inspired by various architectural eras–Mudejar, Gothic, Baroque–but after 1902 “his designs elude conventional stylistic nomenclature“. The famous Catalan architect worked in Barcelona, and we will get the chance to visit his iconic constructs on this tour

What to order from restaurants in Portugal?

Portugal is known for its delicious cuisine and is a great destination for any food love. Famous for its array of seafood and hearty cooking, as well as its olives, cherries and cheese, Portugal is a place where you are unlikely to go hungry. Here are some typical Portuguese dishes to give you sense of the country’s cuisine.

  • Pastel de nata – these egg custard tarts are the quintessential Portuguese sweet treat. The tarts are crispy and flaky on the outside and sweet and creamy on the inside, and adored by Portuguese and foreigners alike. Pastel de nata, sometimes called pasteis de nata, have been made in Portugal for over 300 years. They were created by monks at the Jeronimos Monastery, who were looking for a way to use up leftover egg yolk after using the egg white to starch their clothing. The best place to try pastel de nata is at Pasteis de Belem in Lisbon, a patisserie that bought the recipe from the monks when they opened in 1837.
  • Caldo Verde – caldo verde is the ultimate Portuguese comfort food. A kale soup, the recipe is simple with just five ingredients: potato, onion, olive oil, kale and chorizo. Despite its simplicity, this soup is hearty and bursting with flavour, in part due to the high quality of Portuguese olive oil.
  • Cataplana de marisco – originating in Algarve, cataplana is a seafood stew named after the copper pan it is cooked in, which opens and closes like a clam. Inside the cataplana you can expect to find onions, garlic, tomatoes, clams, whole prawns and fresh fish.
  • Bacalhau – balcalhau is dried and salted cod and you are likely to find it in just about every Portuguese restaurant. It is a staple of the Portuguese diet and eaten in a whole variety of ways. You might find it baked with cream and potatoes ( bacalhau com natas ) or boiled and served with vegetables and sliced hard-boiled eggs ( bacalhau com todos).
