  • joewY3356MA 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to see Manila We were on a SE Asia cruise and booked this tour instead of one offered by the ship. It was one of our most enjoyable experiences of the trip. Jo, our guide , picked us up on time and right where we expected. She worked with us to customize the tour and even made some last minuet changes to minimize wait times at some sites due to traffic from the ship. We never felt rushed and got to see many interesting and diverse things in the city, within our limited available time. Leila Eldian, the local tour manager, kept in touch with us before the trip as well as on the day of the tour, and helped us work through some last minute changes due the a change in the ship's schedule. I would highly recommend this trip and be sure to ask for Jo to be your guide. Read more Written February 16, 2024

I was pretty nervous beforehand but the instructors were great and I felt like I knew what I was doing when I got in the water. I couldn't believe the size of the whale sharks! I 100% want to do it again one day and have been urging friends and family to give it a go. The driver Joel made sure to get us there on time and our guide Amalia was very helpful. I left my shoes at the waterfall and they went back for me to find them. It was an amazing day and incredible experience. Read more Written February 2, 2023

  • jdjoann 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Worth it! Go be part of a school of fishes, swim with a turtle, appreciate the corals and have a canyoneering rush! Wonderful place for awesome experiences. Have fun with the sardine run!! Have leisurely walk/swim with a pawikan. Appreciate the corals. Have a canyoneering rush! Pros Friendly people Affordable - php500 per pax package for the sardine run+pawikan+coral and php1500 per pax for canyoneering (includes lunch). Package includes rent for basic gear (snorkel and life vest) and 2 expert guides who happen to be brothers and are safety focused and take really good underwater pictures (contact: Charlie Tundag 09557280005) You can rent extras - gopro @php500, fins for snorkeling , footwear for canyoneering Shower area available - with minimal pay (manage expectations - think outdoor rustic) Cons Jellyfish!!!! And more jellyfish!!!! Notes Better to do this first before going to sumilon/oslob; if planning on renting a gopro and having more underwater photoexperienced guides - negotiate to have them also for the sumilon island snorkeling and oslob butanding/whale shark experience (the oslob gopro were dated and the guides there had limited expertise in taking pics) Best to have your own gear ie snorkel, fins, mojos/footwear If planning for all activities to be done in a day - start early!!! There are canteens/food establishments by the sardine run area Lockers are available for a minimal fee When planning an overnight - check in before sundown as navigating can be tricky (narrow dark and winding roads with dead ends) Be prepared for jellyfish stings Lots of affordable/budget lodging (for oslob - we highly recommend castroverde homestay with its free unending coffee and drinking water, hammocks for outside relaxation and friendly and helpful staff; for moalboal - Oyo RN Guesthouse had a clean room for us even when we booked really late at nivht) Read more Written January 6, 2023
  • Bernard T 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Fun but very long Overall the day was great. Whale sharks are awesome had many pictures. I went on a Monday and it was not crowded. If you want to avoid crowded go during the week. Canyoneering was ok the beginning is great 5 jumps in like 20 minutes. Then the distance between jumps only becomes longer and longer. I have an injured hip from when I was in the military and the long walks were difficult. I did make it to the end but I really wish I know it would be 4 hours of walking before I signed up. Like I said in the beginning overall the day was great. I have many great pictures and memories but I will never go Canyoneering again once is enough lol Read more Written September 19, 2022

  • ikjm 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Underwhelming Our trip started with a cancellation and then a no show which added to the journey time. Once out of Cebu City the roads are terrible so it was a very uncomfortable 2 hours. We arrived to chaos and frankly given how crowded you are on the boat as well in the water, it is simply not worth it. Too many people in the water vying for their video or picture. The Whale Sharks were delightful but only for a half hour. The waterfall was the same, crowded and uninspiring. The trip back took 5 hours as traffic was awful. I don't recommend this at all. I know people have to make money and they are all very nice but it simply isn't worth it. Read more Written December 26, 2019

Once we arrived in Bohol we were greeted by Bing and we were off. Bing was very knowledgeable and a local to the island. Our driver Fidel was quiet but cracked a few smiles throughout the day. The Chocolate Hills were amazing and the Tarsiers were so cute. Our mini river cruise with lunch was delicious and it was neat to meet the Ati tribe. The next stop is in the town of Bagac to pay our respects at the Zero Kilometer Death March Marker and on our way to Bagac we will have a short stop at the Bell Tower – a 27m high tower erected in 1975 to commemorate peace and reconciliation between the Philippines and Japan.

We then stop to reflect at the “ Battle of the Pockets ” marker and the “ Pantingan River Bridge ” where over 400 men executed in cold blood.

Then we head to Mt Samat Shrine , commissioned in 1996 by President Ferdinand Marcos to commemorate the 25th anniversary of World War II, and to remember those who lost their lives at the Battle of Bataan . If the weather is clear we can see the City if Manila and Corregidor Island.

You will be fascinated by the Samat War Museum which has artifacts ranging from pictures and pictures and paintings of Philippine and American heroes to armaments used by the Philippines, US and Japanese troops during the war.

We carry on to the town of Balanga, a short stop at The Flaming Sword Museum , it depicts the gallantry and bravery of the Filipino and American soldiers, it was at this point (K.M.42) that the captured USAFFE soldiers from Mariveles and Bagac converged in the infamous Bataan Death March. We then make a visit to the location where Major General Edward P. King negotiate the terms of surrender to Japanese Lt. Gen. Masaharu Homma on the 9th April 1942.

Visit the Worl War 2 Museum inside the Elementary School of Balanga, The museum houses old photograph of the Philippines during peace time to Luberation, and a huge diorama made up to 120 dolls depicting scenes from the infamous Bataan Death March.

Then to San Fernando Train Station where Filipino and US Prisoners of War where put in box cars measuring 20 Feet by 8 feet, stinking with waste and urine with no air. Then march 6 km to Camp O’ Donnell in Capas Tarlac.

Finally to Camp O’Donel l was the final destination of the Filipino and American soldiers who surrendered after the Battle of Bataan   on April 09, 1942. About 60,000 Filipino and 9,000 Americans were housed at the camp. During the few months in 1942 that Camp O’Donnel was used as POW camp, about 20,000 Filipinos and 1.500 Americans died there of diease, starvation, neglect and brutality.

I have lived most of my life in Metro Manila and every time there is an opportunity to escape the city, Bataan rarely comes to mind. Bataan, dubbed as the country’s historical hub, has been an underrated tourist destination despite the fact that it is only approximately three hours away from Metro Manila by bus. A number of bus companies service this province. Among them are Genesis , Bataan Transit , and Victory Liner .

[googlemaps https://www.google.com/maps/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d494049.8222360091!2d120.31227951308517!3d14.669381363770649!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x339614e301987889%3A0x6ae0cb8f5ee13d48!2sBataan!5e0!3m2!1sen!2sph!4v1533910332297&w=600&h=450]

Bataan is a province located in Central Luzon, a peninsula facing the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). It is so close to Manila that it actually encloses the Manila Bay. In fact, there is a ferry (via the 1Bataan Integrated Transport System ) that services the Bataan-Manila route. A one-way ferry ride takes only about one hour.

Below are the ferry fares:

  • With bus drop off from Port of Capinpin to Mariveles and Dinalupihan routes
  • Senior Citizen discounts are not applicable
  • With bus drop off points to various bus stations in Bataan
  • Senior Citizen discounts are applicable
  • Tickets may be purchased at the ticket booths located at the Port of Orion, Bataan and SM MOA Esplanade Seaside Terminal, Pasay City

From August 2 to 3, I had the opportunity to discover the richness in history, culture, beauty and resources of Bataan when I got invited to witness the launch of the Behold Bataan Escapade Tour Packages by the Bataan Provincial Tourism Office . Instead of traveling to Bataan by sea, I took a land trip together with the other travel bloggers because of inclement weather. Darn.

We arrived at the Bataan Tourism Center in Balanga City safe and sound. Thanks to the exceptional driving skills (naks!) of Roberto Manabat , more popularly known as Vandolph among his peers at the Bataan Tourism Center. Special thanks to Paula Erika Gayeta for seamlessly arranging everything.

We joined other travel bloggers, members of the media and representatives of the different travel agency associations in Central Luzon.

We were welcomed by the Honorable Governor Alberto S. Garcia himself no less. He briefly shared to us Bataan’s progress as the province having the lowest poverty incidence of 1.16% in the country! Note that the country average is ~22%. During my short visit, I witnessed the people’s enthusiasm to succeed and the provincial government’s dedication to service. There is no doubt that Bataan will be soaring to new heights in business and tourism in the coming years, if not months, to come.

Major contractors from the country and around the world expressed interest in joining the open competitive bidding for various stages of implementation of the inter-island bridge project that would connect Bataan and Cavite provinces over Manila Bay.

The contractors attended the recent Town Hall Meeting for the Bataan – Cavite Interlink Bridge (BCIB) Project organized by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

BCIB is envisioned as a 32.15-kilometer bridge that will cut travel time between Bataan and Cavite from the 5 hours to just 45 minutes.

It is estimated to cost $3.91 billion (about P219.31 billion). Of the amount, $2.11 billion (about P118.32 billion) will be financed by the ADB while $1.14 billion (about P63.71 billion) is proposed to be co-financed by the AIIB. The remaining $664.23 million (about P37.28 billion) will be funded by the government.

Officials of the DPWH, together with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) hosted on March 26, 2024 the contractors outreach program for the BCIB Project.

DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil Sadain led the event at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City. It served as a pilot of the department’s series of Bagong Pilipinas townhall meetings in line with the instruction of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Secretary Manuel Bonoan and other Cabinet members to champion the administration’s brand of governance and leadership.

“Through this outreach initiative, we hope to further connect and promote information sharing with prospective local and foreign contractors of the upcoming BCIB Project which will be one of the world’s longest marine bridges, and strengthen partnerships in the construction industry,” said Sadain.

Danish Ambassador to the Philippines Franz-Michael Skjold Mellbin, Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, ADB country director Pavit Ramachadran and country specialist Alain Morel, DPWH Undersecretaries Eric Ayapana and Ador Canlas and project director Sharif Madsmo Hasim and project manager Teresita Bauzon attended the event.

Also joining the event are commercial specialist Bebe Montesines of the US Embassy in the Philippines, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) director Sheryl Mund; and DPWH officials.

Experts from T.Y. Lin International working on the project’s final detailed engineering design led by its project manager/team leader and company senior vice president Marwan Nader led the discussion.

The construction of the project will be divided into seven contract packages with the DPWH identifying initial on-land packages, including the 5-km. Bataan Land Approach under Package 1 and the 1.35-km. Cavite Land Approach under Package 2.

Other packages are the 20.65-km. Marine Viaducts in the North and South under Packages 3 and 4; and 2.15-km. North Channel Bridge for Package 5 and 3.15-kilometer South Channel Bridge for Package 6. The 7th package involves project-wide ancillary works with an eventual separate package 8 for the operations and maintenance.

Book a Bataan & Pampanga day tour

Description

Travel to Bataan and Pampanga and immerse in both provinces' heritage with this seat-in-coach shared tour to their World War II sites. This experience is perfect for history buffs as you will immerse yourself in places important to each province. The tour also includes shared hotel pick-up and drop-off from select cities, transfers to each attraction, and the service of a guide.

Your shared tour will start after your guide fetches you from your accommodation within Manila or Makati City. If you are staying outside of these cities, a surcharge will apply for pick-up and drop-off services. Lunch is not included in the tour, but you can ask your guide for recommendations for the best restaurants nearby that you can eat at in between your visits to the tourist spots.

After your guide fetches you, you will begin the road trip to your first stop, the Layac Junction in Bataan. A large monument stands in the center of the junction, the "First Line of Defense Monument." It depicts and honors the first soldiers who defended the province from the Japanese forces during WWII.

From there, you will travel to the peak of Mt. Samat . Here, you will find one of the province's most notable WWII sites, the Shrine of Valor . The shrine features images of major historical events such as the Battle of Bataan and the execution of the Philippines' national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. You can also enter the museum by the shrine to see artifacts dating to the war and maps of Bataan that show crucial spots during the war.

Next, you will head to the Balanga School House Surrender Site . As its name implies, this is where the Allied Forces officially surrendered to the invading Japanese army. Lastly, you will go to the San Fernando train station in Pampanga before returning to your hotel. This railway station marked the end of the Bataan Death March , which consisted of Filipino and American prisoners of war following the surrender.
