night safari ghost story

By now, Halloween festivities at places like Haw Par Villa , Mount Austin in Johor Bahru, and more are in full swing. Of course those are fun and all, but how about some real life Singapore ghost stories thrown into the mix to further spook up your Halloween?

From jumping Chinese vampires to disappearing old men, and even a large creature of the night, we asked you guys to channel your inner Russell Lee and recount your scariest real life phantom experiences and y’all really served !

These are their stories, edited for length and clarity.

1. The Giant Owl

real life singapore ghost stories

This happened during my National Service (NS) days in 2009, when I was posted to a camp near Lim Chu Kang. Some might be familiar with that camp, however it is no longer an army camp anymore.

I was on Company Orderly Sergeant (COS) duty on Sunday and it was after ten at night. I was on the phone with my mum as she called to check up on me while waiting for the other personnel to report back to camp.

night safari ghost story

As I was about to leave the bunk located on the higher floor and with my mum still on call, I came across a huge owl perched on the porch in front of my bunk. When I say huge, imagine this: I am around 1.85m tall, and this owl was easily around my height or taller.

The owl turned its head 45 degrees to stare at me directly and I reversed back into the bunk, frantically saying some prayers. My mum, having heard me through the phone, kept asking if I was alright. However, I didn’t want to worry her so I assured her that all was fine.

I gathered the courage to exit the bunk and it was then that the owl flew away flapping its huge wings, disappearing into thin air.

– Lee

I suppose the size of that owl will not meet HDB’s pet requirements.

2. Playing Hangman

real life singapore ghost stories

When I was younger, I used to live in Woodlands. Every night, I would see an old man hanging by my room window. This terrified me as I was facing the window and sleeping. I decided to face away from the window, when I realised that my cupboard had a mirror and I could still see him in the reflection.

night safari ghost story

I went and told my parents about it who brushed me off by saying that I just have a creative imagination or a scary nightmare every night. Eventually after we moved out, they told me that an old man actually died in the house and that they just didn’t want to scare me.

– Unclepls

Talk about bringing a more realistic definition to the game of hangman. Do you think OP did not guess the right vowels and consonants in time?

3. Extra Company

real life singapore ghost stories

I live in a condominium apartment, so sometimes at night I will go downstairs to sit at this round bench that was situated beside the playground to chill. There is a CCTV that overlooks the playground to the bench.

One night during the seventh month, I was sitting down on the bench while on a call with my friend when it was past midnight. I did not believe in ghosts at the time, so I wasn’t bothered about the timing. Suddenly the security guard on duty came towards me and looked horrified. He asked me if I had been alone all this time or if I had a friend with me. I told him I was on the phone and did not have anybody beside me the whole time.

night safari ghost story

He told me to head back up home now as he had previously looked through the CCTV and saw that I was not alone as it showed that there were a few people sitting beside me and behind me. Hearing this, I got super scared and had goosebumps. The security guard was nice enough to follow me back to my block and told me to stay safe.

I got sick the next few days with a high fever after that encounter. Never sat there anymore at night.

– Min

The amount of tea spilled in OP’s conversation with their friend must be top tier that even the spirits gathered around to hear. I mean I get it, being dead sounds pretty boring.

4. Lady in White

real life singapore ghost stories

I went to Night Safari on a Thursday during the seventh month with my friends. Throughout the night we kept seeing a white cloth among trees and bushes.

night safari ghost story

On one particularly quiet trail, I saw a lady in white among the trees and my friend suddenly asked if any of us was wearing floral perfume . I put two and two together and realised it was probably a pontianak .

My friend got a fever that night and I tested positive for Covid the next day. The only friend who didn’t fall sick sleeps beneath a cross.

– Vio

Is anyone else seeing a running theme here with the seventh month?

5. The Vampire Ambush

This happened at the start of 2022 around February.

real life singapore ghost stories

I was having a staycation with my friends and we decided to go cycling at about 1am. We ended up at Marina Barrage (this was at about 1.30am–1.45am) at the bridge that most runners would be at, and there’s another part where it was a park. One of my friends and I decided to turn left, which was towards the park.

night safari ghost story

Upon entering, I saw the bushes moving on my right which was close to the water side, so I decided to turn to look as I was wondering why there would be movements this late at night.  When I looked, what I saw was this traditional jumping Chinese vampire pouncing right at me and boy did I shout .

real life singapore ghost stories

I U-turned and cycled as fast as possible away from there. I refused to tell anyone but that friend that followed me, and I told him not to tell our other friends. We continued our cycling journey and I felt super uneasy as I was feeling super cold and I could sense that the thing was following us.

night safari ghost story

We finished our journey at the stadium and decided to take a Grab back to our hotel. In the Grab, I felt my chest being super tight and I could not breathe properly. I only felt better when we went back to our hotel. As a person that could see all these things, it was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had.

– Stepsister

F1 who? Even modern day commutes like bicycles and private hire cars have nothing on the speed of a traditional Chinese vampire.

6. Gifted Children

real life singapore ghost stories

Used to work in a preschool in quite an atas neighbourhood. The staff and parents were not really the superstitious type, when kids start to talk by themselves or make some comments about seeing a ‘friend’ in class, we would just attribute it to imaginary friends and that it’s a phase some young kids go through.

I had the ‘pleasure’ to learn about this during my first week at that school.

night safari ghost story

The first incident happened while I was reading a book to the kids. Midway through the story,  a girl raised her hand and said “ Teacher, can you read louder? My friend under the table cannot hear you .”

I thought one kid had snuck away, but no one was under any table. I asked, “ Who? Which table? ” The girl pointed to the table behind me and said, “ There! The black kid under the table, his face is at your leg .” I didn’t think much about that and just continued the story.

real life singapore ghost stories

The next day, another kid had to poop after lunch. He would usually call me after he is done so I could help him. Our toilet was blocked by a wall for privacy. I watched over the rest and suddenly heard the boy crying and yelling, “ STOP PUSHING ME !”

Again, I thought someone snuck behind me and disturbed the boy. I popped my head behind the wall and saw the boy on the toilet seat jostling some invisible thing beside him. I asked if he was okay, then he said “ I don’t know, this friend keeps pushing me !” I asked another teacher to keep an eye on him as he pooped but she told me that nothing happened after.

night safari ghost story

The next day was the eve of Deepavali and a parent called to say she was stuck in a jam at Little India, so I had no choice but to wait with her daughter in my class till she came to collect her.

After a while, I told the girl that we could sit at the lounge area to read books and instructed her to pack her stuff and switch off all the lights since I was the only one left with this kid. As I was about to exit my class, this kid said “ Teacher, how about my friend over there? Why you never ask her to come and follow us? “

real life singapore ghost stories

I just held the kid’s hand, exited the building, locked up and waited outside until her mum came. I never stayed back alone in that centre after that. The fact that the kids were okay with seeing these things was just off-putting for me.

– Scaredy Cat

All the sequels of The Sixth Sense can be filmed in this centre, I gather.

7. Phantom Tenant

night safari ghost story

I used to rent a room in an old HDB, the kind with those circular staircases that lead up to the house. Every night, I would hear footsteps and find my belongings moved around.

So I asked my roommate, who told me about a tenant who missed payment and just didn’t come back with their belongings left in the room.

real life singapore ghost stories

I found an old photograph in a drawer where that tenant used to stay. It was of a guy and someone else that seemed to be a girl, but I couldn’t really tell because the picture was very blurry.

night safari ghost story

One night, there was a low humming in the other room where I found the picture. Upon investigating, the door slammed shut behind me and my phone died. In the pitch black, I heard whispers and felt something touch my shoulder. Suddenly, the door swung open again and I quickly ran back to my room.

The next day, the photo disappeared, and my roommate claimed that he never spoke to me about any missing tenant. I left the place already, but I hear another tenant who has moved in also has experiences with weird things happening…

An appearing and disappearing photo, a missing tenant, an empty room… These are the perfect ingredients for a horror movie.

These real life Singapore ghost stories were so terrifyingly good that I went on to ask some of my ConfirmGood coworkers for more and they sure didn’t disappoint!

8. An “Old Man”

night safari ghost story

I was at a church camp and one of the night activities was to go for a night walk at Bukit Batok Nature Park. The walk took place at 1am (what a great idea). I was one of the “OGLs” and I was stationed at one checkpoint to make sure the participants knew where to go. While the others had a proper hut for a checkpoint, my checkpoint was at a four-way cross section. Behind me was a dark staircase and my station was brightened by candles.

real life singapore ghost stories

I got bored waiting for the participants to pass me so I decided to burn some twigs and leaves (another brilliant idea). After sometime the trees started rustling pretty violently — except there was no wind. I brushed it off as nothing but suddenly this elderly man dressed all white appeared from behind me.

night safari ghost story

He looked at me and disappeared into the light. I tried to chase after him but I couldn’t find him anymore. I was spooked out but I decided to keep this to myself for the time being.

The next night, the second group went for the night walk. One of my friends was seated at the same spot as I was. He also played with twigs and he too saw an old man in white. When he called out to the man thinking it was one of our crew, the man did not respond. He came back and told us this story and when I said I experienced the same thing, it clicked in our heads that the “old man” wasn’t an old man…

– Marcus Leong, Writer

This old man definitely took his spirituality to the next level at this church camp’s night walk.

9. Uninvited Thirdwheeler

real life singapore ghost stories

I hosted a birthday party for my sister last year at this hotel in Singapore. After the party, it was around 2AM and I had just gotten out of the shower, which my sister then went in after me.

While she was in the toilet, I was scrolling on TikTok when I heard the sounds of furniture moving. I just assumed it was from upstairs and didn’t think much about it. I ended up dozing off, but woke up to a loud thump.

night safari ghost story

Then, I started hearing aggressive knocking sounds from the hotel door on the left, and laughter noises from my right. But when I checked the peephole of the door, there wasn’t anyone there! We were staying on the 20th floor, so where exactly would the laughter be coming from?

At that time, my sister came out from the shower, and before I could say anything she asked me, “ Aren’t you tired? You’ve been talking to me the whole time, I thought you would’ve toh-ed by now. “

real life singapore ghost stories

I was so confused, and told her I literally just woke up. She thought I was pranking her because “it” really sounded like me. But she quickly realised that I was serious, and both of us went to bed. We left the hotel first thing in the morning.

To this day, I still wonder who my sister was talking to.

Imagine having someone so obsessed with you that they can replicate your voice? Can’t be me.

night safari ghost story

With all these spine chilling real life ghost stories in Singapore, here is one of my own that really terrified me as a kid.

10. The Wet Lady

real life singapore ghost stories

I was 11 when my parents and I first moved into this house. At the time, I had a habit of sleeping with the door open and in this new room of mine, I kept that habit.

My bed was directly facing the doorway, and adjacent to my room was the bathroom. On the very first night of sleeping in this house, I suddenly awoke. This did not alarm me as I had a habit of waking up randomly in the night, before falling right back asleep after.

But this time, I could sense that something was off and soon after, I realised why.

night safari ghost story

Due to my short-sightedness, the world is at 144p for me but I could still make out the silhouette of a very tall female figure right outside my room and in front of the bathroom. It was wearing white, had long dark hair, and was dripping wet . I could even hear the water dripping.

I was horrified at this point and I immediately shut my eyes and forced myself to go back to sleep. Eventually, I did. The next morning, everything seemed fine and I thought what happened the previous night was a nightmare.

real life singapore ghost stories

However, as I left my room to enter the bathroom for a morning wash up, my grogginess was gone and I looked down to find myself standing in a large puddle of water.

I panicked and asked my mum if she spilled anything outside my room, but she insisted she did not and even made me clean up the mess she thought I spilled.

Until this day, I wondered if it was really a nightmare or not. Nonetheless, I never slept with the door open from that day onwards.

I survived Night Safari Halloween Horrors

IMPORTANT! Read this before you scroll down the page. This post contains chilling images that  some viewers may find it unpleasant, especially when you are alone now, staring at this screen in the middle of the night.

You’ve been warned! Even I had a hard time editing this unusual post, hearing strange noises and having nightmares after that. So, don’t let your guard down as you read on…

It all started when my friend and I accepted an invitation to take on the Night Safari Halloween Horrors last weekend. This year’s Halloween theme is Spooky Tales of Asia , a unique Halloween experience that centers around supernatural beliefs and scary urban legends.

night safari ghost story

Train of Terror , Trail of the Undead and the Gui Mansion at the Haunted Village in Singapore Zoo are the horror highlights of the Halloween month.

The Train of Terror took us deep into the rainforest where we were greatly “disturbed” by the horrifying “ghouls” that appeared out of no where. My friend seated on the right was afraid to look on her left as any “ghoul” could scare the hell out of you if they caught you off-guard!

night safari ghost story

Spotted another “ghoul” crawling at the grave. Kudos to these “ghouls”. Aren’t they afraid of the real “thing” out there while they are alone waiting to scare “victims” like us?

night safari ghost story

I find it eerie to see creepy mannequins amidst the dark forest. I hope I didn’t snap any “thing” extra. So you know why it’s a mental torture to edit this set of photos! Darn the ghastly images are still so vivid in my mind!

night safari ghost story

The Chinese ancient “ghost bride”. The real person behind this bloody visage is so damn brave! I can’t imagine playing “ghost” together with the creepy mannequins and standing there alone while waiting for another “Train of Terror” to pass by.

night safari ghost story

See? The “ghost bride” is stationed here with so many mannequins at the wedding altar in the darkness! Mind you, it’s not as bright as you see in this shot. I fired flash. So that’s really spooky!

night safari ghost story

Train is coming… train is coming… train is cominnnng! … Love your ride! *ding dong*

Saw a pillory with a few “heads” around as our train passed by…

night safari ghost story

If the Train of Terror didn’t scare you silly, get off the train and step into the Trail of the Undead . A girl was screaming hysterically just as she ventured into the darkness.

night safari ghost story

Eeeeks!!! Did you see eyes that look so real? I hate this shot! I hate taking photos here!

The mummy. Gosh that face looks so real!

This image spooks!

night safari ghost story

Gotcha! Spotted one of the many “ghouls” who hides in the trees and pounces on passers-by in this unworldly trail. Sorry eh, I fired flash at him after he tried to frighten me. Else, it was really pitch dark and almost impossible to spot the ghastly “creatures”!

This ginormous “spider” gives me goosebumps. “It” stays high up and haunts the cave.

The twin sisters.

An eeeeerie baby doll in a crate.

night safari ghost story

A fearful girl was screaming frantically near me, begging the “ghouls” not to terrorize her.

night safari ghost story

We adjourned to the Gui Mansion at the Singapore Zoo that is just a few minutes walk from the Night Safari. The century-old Gui Mansion at the Haunted Village was once a residence of the Gui family. A serial killer massacred the entire household and the place became haunted.

Only a few can enter the Gui Mansion at a time so the queue can go pretty long. I’d suggest you head for the Gui Mansion first before other Halloween attractions. We waited for more than an hour for this hair-raising experience. No flash is allowed inside = no photo for you! Those in front of our queue were afraid to lead the way, so it ended up I became the first one to enter the ghost mansion. :S I had to flip the curtains and watch out for the “ghouls” while touring “hell”. It isn’t a big “mansion” yet horrifying screams filled the air.

Survival tips for the faint-hearted : Cover your ears like me. It helps!

The Coffee Shop that serves real drinks to chill out after all the screams and frights in the Gui Mansion.

Be trigger happy with the “ghosts”. Don’t worry, none of them can lay a finger on you, they only intimidate you. I guess they are succumbed to visitors who might hit or push them away out of fright, and blind them with camera’s flash!

Tips: Start off early with the Gui Mansion in Singapore Zoo first to beat the queue, follow by the popular Train of Terror in Night Safari and at your own risk, enter the Trail of the Undead .

When you think you’ve enough of horrifying moments, explore the rest of Night Safari to visit the nocturnal animals without the scary “ghouls” lurking in your path. Thereafter, when you feel that someone is watching over your shoulder, it can’t be the “ghouls” anymore…

“They” are waiting for you…

13 "True" Scary Ghost Stories That'll Have You Questioning Every Shadow

They're best served around a campfire.

The Amityville Haunting

One of the most infamous and well-known ghost stories started on November 13, 1974, when Ronald J. DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family in Amityville, New York. However, it wasn't the six person homicide that put the sleepy little Long Island town on the map: It was the home's paranormal activity, which began 13 months later when it was acquired by the Lutz family. Of course, details of the haunting (like most hauntings) are unconfirmed, but the Lutz's claimed that during their 28 day stay they witnessed several strange and unexplainable events, i.e. doors flew off their hinges, slime seeped out of walls, and there were ghosts. George Lutz used to wake up at 3:15 every morning, the exact time the DeFeo murders were carried out. Since reports of the haunting first surfaced, the Amityville home has been the backdrop for several books, documentaries, and films .

Amityville Horror House

The Conjuring

You've probably seen—or, at the very least, heard about— The Conjuring . The 2013 film featuring Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, and Ron Livingston was very well received, but did you know the supernatural thriller was based on a true story? Yes, the Perron family really existed and lived in a "haunted" home. So what happened? According to the Perrons, their Rhode Island residence was the site of several strange occurrences. Things moved at random, there were unexplained noises, and—yes— ghosts. The Perrons even experienced the occasional "possession." And while their home was not the site of a mass murder, many children died under mysterious or suspicious circumstances, and their deaths have been tied (albeit loosely) to legendary satanist Bathsheba Sherman.

The Crying Lady in The Dakota

When The Dakota was built, it was something of a modern marvel. According to Curbed New York , an 1885 Real Estate Record and Builder's Guide regarded it as "one of the noblest apartment houses of the world." And since its opening, it has housed many famous residents , including Peter Tchaikovsky, Lauren Bacall, Rosemary Clooney, Connie Chung, and Maury Povich. But The Dakota made a new name for itself after John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved into the building in 1973. Why? Because Lennon claimed he saw a "crying lady ghost" roaming the halls, and after Lennon died—directly in front of The Dakota—Ono said she witnessed Lennon's ghost sitting at his piano.

New York's Dakota

The Jersey Devil

While this one is not a "ghost" story, the tale of the Jersey Devil has withstood the test of time—and for good reason. Stories of the winged beast are truly terrifying. But who or what is the Jersey Devil? According to Weird NJ , the infamous creature haunting the Pine Barrens is the child of Mother Leeds, a Pines resident who conceived her thirteenth child in 1735. At the time, Leeds had no idea how she could care for (let alone afford) another kid and so, in exasperation, she raised her hands to the heavens and proclaimed “Let this one be a devil!” Leeds got her wish. Moments after birth, her healthy baby boy grew horns and claws and bat-like wings. Legend has it the "devil" then killed his mother before attacking onlookers.

Phantom Steamboat on the Tombigbee River

In February 1858, a steamboat named Eliza Battle set out on a cruise down Alabama's Tombigbee River. Onboard were 60 passengers and more than 1200 bales of cotton. But when the cotton caught fire on March 1, guests and crew were overcome by smoke and flames. 33 perished on (or in) the Tombigbee. It is said those ill-fated passengers haunt the river to this very day, and on brisk nights, people have claimed to see the Eliza Battle in the misty waters.

The River Front At Cincinnati

The Bell Witch

Much like The Conjuring, the Bell witch is the subject of two films, An American Haunting and The Blair Witch Project , as well as several podcasts , and books. But where did the witch come from? Rumor has it the Bell witch first appeared in the early 1800s, when the Bell family—for whom the witch was named—moved to Tennessee. After settling into their new home, the Bells began hearing strange noises, including dogs barking, chains rattling, and a woman whispering, and the latter became known as the Bell witch. Of course, no one knows her true identity, but legend has it she's the ghost of a former neighbor, Kate Batts. It is also believed the witch played a role in the untimely loss of John Bell, who died from poisoning.

The Ghost of Henry Dixon

Tunnelton may be a small, unincorporated town in rural Indiana, but it is big in the ghost hunting community. Why? Because Tunnelton is home to the Tunnelton Tunnel—a.k.a. The Big Tunnel—where it is said numerous ghosts still linger, both on and beneath the grounds. However, the most famous tenant is Henry Dixon, a night watchman whose body was found just inside the tunnel in 1908. Dixon's murder was never solved, and many have reported seeing the watchman on patrol—lantern in hand. Locals have also been "chased" by Dixon.

The Legend of the Hamburger Man

While the origins of Hamburger Man are unclear, the reason for his moniker is obvious. Urban legend says the half man, half monster kidnaps his victims, drags them deep into the woods of Sand Hills State Park in Hutchinson, Kansas, and— once there—grinds his victims into hamburger meat.

Devil's Den

In the summer of 1863, hundreds of thousands of soldiers descended on Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and many lost their life. According to How Stuff Works , more than 50,000 infantry men were left dead, wounded, or missing, and rumor has it some of these soldiers still haunt the battlefields, particularly Devil's Den: a rocky enclave where 1,800 died. One woman claims she felt a hand grab her ankle at the historic site, and several others have seen ghosts "appear", both in person and in photographs.

A Journey Through Hallowed Ground

The Myrtles Plantation

It is said numerous spirits haunt the Myrtles Plantation in St. Francisville, Louisiana; however, the most well-known ghost is Chloe who, according to the plantation's official website , is the former slave (and love interest) of plantation owner Clark Woodruff. Their affair ended abruptly. Woodruff caught her eavesdropping on him, and as punishment, cut off her ear, but Chloe allegedly exacted her revenge. She poisoned the rest of his family. Unfortunately, Chloe's peers did not defend her actions. The other slaves knew what she had done and hanged her. It is believed Chloe resides on the property to this very day.

The Villisca Axe Murders

More than a century later, one brutal night still haunts the small town of Villisca, Iowa. In the early hours of the morning of June 10, 1912, Josiah and Sarah Moore, their four children, and family friends Lena and Ina Stillinger, were bludgeoned to death in their sleep at the Moore's home. As the investigation unfolded it was found that the doors of the house were locked, all but two windows were covered, and the murder weapon—an axe—was left at the scene. The killings remain unsolved.

In 1994, the house's new owners restored the property to a near-exact replica of how it looked at the time of the murders. Paranormal investigators have named the Villisca Axe Murder House as one of the most haunted in the country, with a ghost hunter even stabbing himself after a night spent in the home. The house is open for day tours and stays for $428 a night, with many occupants reporting they've had some sort of supernatural encounter, like hearing voices, while sleeping overnight.

The Ghosts of Hinton Ampner

This haunted English mansion is what supposedly inspired Henry James to write his renowned horror novella, The Turn of the Screw , which in turn was reworked for television for Netflix's The Haunting of Bly Manor . As the story goes, in January 1765, the Ricketts family moved into the manor after renting it from a woman named Lady Stawell. Almost immediately the inhabitants and the staff—particularly Mrs. Ricketts—reported multiple instances of observing ghostly beings and hearing disturbing sounds. Sightings included a swiftly walking tall woman in a silk dress and a cloaked figure. While living at the mansion, Mrs. Ricketts heard gunshots, slamming doors, footsteps, shrieks, and moans. "They began before I went to bed, and... were heard till after broad day in the morning. A shrill female voice would begin, and then two others with... manlike tone seemed to join in the discourse... though this conversation sounded as if close to me, I never could distinguish words," she wrote at the time, according to the National Trust.

After seven years, the Ricketts moved out once the home was deemed unfit for occupation. When it was demolished in 1793, workers found a box on the grounds that contained a small skull. It was thought the remains were from the child of Lord Stawell and his sister-in-law, Honoria, who were decreed the ghosts of Hinton Ampner. The property has been reconstructed multiple times over the decades to reflect the era, and is now under the care of the U.K.'s National Trust.

Huggin' Molly

The Legend of Huggin' Molly has been passed down for generations in the small town of Abbleville, Alabama. It's said that the ghost of Molly, a cloaked 7 foot tall woman, roams the streets of Abbleville at night. If children cross her while out and about, she'll chase them, envelope them in an unwelcome embrace, and scream in their ears. Legends of her origin vary from versions that she say she was a woman who tragically lost her baby, to a local professor who was attempting to keep kids from venturing out at night. She's become so ingrained in the folklore of the town, that there is a beloved local cafe named after her.

"Anybody who grew up in Abbeville grew up knowing the legend of Huggin' Molly," a native of the town, Jimmy Rane, told AL.com. "If your mother or dad didn't want you to be out after dark, they'd tell you Huggin' Molly would get you. And you believed it, too."
