Devaramane

A tiny hamlet in Mudigere in Karnataka’s Chikmagalur district, Devaramane is no less than a paradise for the off-beat tourists. The term ‘Devaramane’ roughly translates to the ‘Abode of God’ and the serene tranquility that prevails here quite aptly satisfies that nomenclature.

devaramane betta trek

The Chikmagalur region of Karnataka is well-known for its scenic beauty. It is home to few of the most scintillating trekking trails – some rather well-known and others a well-kept secret. Devaramane belongs to the later group. Unlike the other treks, this one ranks low on the difficulty scale and is ideal for those new to the trekking game.

Nestled between the evergreen Western Ghats terrain, Devaramane is a fascinating spot that can enthrall the nature lovers. It is a lush green valley surrounded by undulating hills and dancing streams. You will be greeted by mountains all around as far as your eyes can see. With mist in the air, the foggy atmosphere offers a breath of fresh air. If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the endemic Haarlu flower – which blossoms once in every 12 years.

This off-beat place is yet to make an impression on the tourism map, so it doesn’t get thronged by swarms of tourists yet. You can be assured of a quiet and rejuvenating vacation. If you are looking for an quick escapade on the lap of mother nature, Devaramane would fit the bill perfectly.

Devaramane is situated near Mudigere in Chikmagalur along the famed Charmadi Ghats section. The nearest major city is Mangalore, which is located at a distance of 118 KM. Around 274 KM away from Bangalore, the place is well-connected by road network. There are ample public transports available, but the adventure seekers prefer to cover this scenic road on bikes and private cars.

Tourism Activities at Devaramane

The tourism activities at Devaramane revolve around the historical temple of Kala Bhairaveshwara. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva, who is worshiped in the form of Kala Bhairava. Perched on top of a hill, it offers sensational bird’s eye view of the distant Western Ghats plateau. One of the reasons why the place is equally advocated by both religious pilgrims as well as nature loving wanderlusts.

Religious sentiments apart, Devaramane is primarily known for being a favorite hunting ground for the trekkers. The mesmerizing 18 KM long trek from the Gutti village is an exhilarating experience. The difficulty level is easy to moderate. The trail unfurls into shola-draped grasslands and takes you across different peaks. You come across gurgling streams and cascading waterfalls. The tranquil lake situated in front of the temple is another tempting prospect.

If you are an angler by heart, then don’t miss out on visiting the Kapila Fishing Camp, which is located just around the corner. Last but not the least, the camping enthusiasts are unlikely to resist the urge to setup a tent on the bank of the lake. You would seldom come across a more scenic place for pitching a camp.

Devaramane - A must visit place

Photo of Kruthika gowda

The location that was causing a stir in my mind due to its stunning scenery and one of my oldest bucket-list item. Yes, I'm referring to the Devaramane view point. As the name implies, I believe it is genuinely a heaven for all(As in heaven is where God reesides and Devaramane translates to abode of God). The gorgeous greenery all around us draws our attention. Well, before I go into detail about how the place was, let me give you a brief overview of how I went there.

Devaramane Viewpoint

Photo of Devaramane Viewpoint, Devaramane, Karnataka, India by Kruthika gowda

It's around 250 kilometres from Bangalore, and we left at 5 a.m. via the hassan highway, taking Chickamagalur route. On the way, we can stop by and visit Belur and Sravanabelagola , but my recommendation is to arrive early in the morning to the view point to take advantage of the foggy weather and see the sunrise.

It was around 8 a.m. when we arrived in Chikkamagalur, and we needed to take a detour at the junction that separates the mudigere and Dharmasthala routes. This location can be reached by driving 2-3 kilometres from Kottigehara to Mudigere and then turning right where the sign board indicates a distance of 12 kilometres to Devaramane. After that, the road is in poor condition. It's a one-lane road, and because we travelled during the rainy season, we couldn't see anything but fog! We drove slowly and cautiously, and due to the poor road conditions, we couldn't even get up to 50 kmph. Many minor waterfalls and water streams can be seen along the journey. Photographers, I believe, adore this location for this reason. The astonishing beauty of nature just captivates us. But this is just a trailor, Picture Abhi Baki Hai Mere Dost.

A few minor temples can also be seen along the road. Driving 25 kilometres took about an hour. It was around 10 a.m. when we arrived at our destination. Our journey begins with a modest entrance sign.

It's a short hike, and we had a great view from every vantage point. We can comfortably enjoy the beauty of nature even on crowded days because it is a large area with many view points. We were absolutely wet by the drizzles because we travelled during the rainy season. We waited a few minutes for the rain to cease, but we knew it wouldn't since we could feel the clouds and the moisture.

Photo of Devaramane - A must visit place by Kruthika gowda

We began our journey in the rain, and believe me when I say that I was literally shivering from the prevailing wind. God!! Wet face, hair blowing in the wind, rain drops poking the face from the opposite side, and so forth. To my astonishment, when we arrived at the view point, there was nothing visible!! It's like there's fog everywhere. When we tried to look down, it felt like the end of the world; all we could see were clouds. We waited for the sun to come out for a while, and after a few hours, we were finally able to see what was lying behind the fog. Wow!! What a beauty, was my first reaction.

I've always been curious about the green hills since I was a kid. I even assumed it was the lawn grass that is around it. And by attentively examining it, I was able to obtain all of my answers.

Photo of Devaramane - A must visit place by Kruthika gowda

I can't recommend a specific time to visit because this place does not disappoint, even in the summer.

Haarlu flowers, which only bloom once every 12 years, are another unique feature of this location. It's a purple blossom that covers the hill, giving us a mash-up of a green saree with purple embroidery.

There is an 800-year-old Bhairaveshwara Temple on the way down, about 500m to 1km from Devaramane, that is well-known among the people. Because it is "Mane Devru"(home Diety) for many people, we can witness a lot of people praying to the Lord. A pond is located in front of the temple, and there was previously a boating facility. They appear to have put a stop to it now.

Ethina Bhuja and Kapila fishing camp are two other local destinations that can be visited during our visit.

Ettina Bhuja Trek (Chikmagalur) – Full Traveller’s Guide

Brief about ettina bhuja trek.

Ettina Bhuja trek is ideal for all types of travelers, whether you are a seasoned trekker or just starting out. As a traveler, I had the opportunity to embark on this exciting journey. This hill, located in the Dakshin Kannada region of Karnataka, stands tall at 1,300 meters above sea level and is part of the Charmadi Ghats. The journey to Ettina Bhuja is a delight for any adventurer and offers a blend of natural beauty and adventure. The trek is surrounded by tall trees, breathtaking views and stunning natural surroundings, which make the journey up the hill tiring, but rewarding.

Ettina Bhuja Peak covered by clouds

If you have a love for nature and enjoy pushing yourself a little, this modestly challenging and fun journey is a must-visit. The trek offers plenty of greenery along its stretches, making it a great way to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. For those who have never trekked before, Ettina Bhuja is the perfect place to start. This hill is easily accessible and the route is well-mapped, making it one of the best trekking options for beginners. So, pack your bags and join me on a journey to Ettina Bhuja, where you can immerse yourself in nature, breathe in the fresh air, and take in the stunning surroundings.

Key details of the Ettina Bhuja Trek:

  • Ideal Number of Days for the Visit : 1 Day
  • Trek Distance : 4.2 km
  • Trek Altitude Range : 1300 meters
  • Nearest Railway Station : Mangalore Station (70 km)
  • Nearest Airport : Mangalore Airport (146 km)

Best places to visit & explore at ettina bhuja.

One of the highlights of my journey was admiring the unique and beautiful fauna in the area. One needs to keep there eye out for rare creatures such as the giant flying squirrel, giant spotted deer, brown palm viper, gaur, and other unusual species.

Another unforgettable experience was watching the sunset at the peak. Although the height of the hill may not be as dramatic as other taller mountains in the region, the sunset was still breathtaking. I had the option to either camp at the peak or simply stop to enjoy the stunning view. I also took some time off to visit Dharmasthala, a little panchayat village famed for its temples. With just two days and one night, I was able to cover this beautiful place.

If you’re looking for other trekking options nearby, Devaramane Betta, a small hill located 22 KM from Mudigere, is popular for its stunning sunsets. At the base of the hill is an ancient Chola temple, Sri Kalabhairaveshwara Swaami Gudi, which is also worth visiting.

What is the best time to visit Ettina Bhuja?

The best time to visit is post-monsoon season, which is from September to February. During this time, the lush surroundings of the Charmadi range are refreshing and provide the perfect backdrop for a trek. However, be mindful of leeches during this season and carry salt to ward them off.

If you can’t make it during the post-monsoon season, winter (December to March) is the next best option. Although the grasses would have dried up, the Shola forests display an interesting mix of colors. It’s best to avoid visiting during peak summer (April-May) due to the extreme heat, and trekking during the rains (June-August) can be dangerous because of the slippery trail.

How to reach the Starting Point of Trek?

Reaching Ettina Bhuja, a trek location located close to Dharmasthala, is easy and convenient. You can either drive to Byrapura village, Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru district on your own or take public transport.

The quickest and most scenic route from Bangalore to Byrapura is via Hassan. You can take the highway from Bangalore to Hassan and then take the Mudigere road via Belur. Once you reach Ambedkar circle, Belur, turn left to stay on NH73 to reach Byrapura. Alternatively, you can take the bus to Mudigere or Dharmasthala from Bangalore and reach the starting point of the trek.

If you’re coming from a different city, you can fly to Mangalore Airport (146 kms) or Bangalore Kempegowda International Airport (280 kms), and then take a train to Mangalore Station (70 kms) or book a bus to Shishila village. From there, you can pre-book a cab ride to reach Ettina Bhuja.

Difficulty Level of Ettina Bhuja Trek

Ettina Bhuja trek is an easy trail, but the final section of the climb can be a bit challenging during the monsoon season. The rocky part with a 75-80 degree inclination is narrow and allows for only one person at a time. It’s important to bring a guide and wear sturdy shoes, as some parts can be slippery. Overall, Ettina Bhuja trek requires some stamina to reach the peak, but is a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Availability of Accommodations & Food near the Trek

Accommodation:.

As of 2022, there are no homestays nearby Ettina Bhuja, but a new homestay is under construction and is expected to open in 2023. It is located after the forest check post office. Visitors usually stay overnight in Chikmagalur or Mudigere, both of which have numerous hotels and lodges available.

Food & Drinks:

There are no restaurants in the village of Byrapura, but there is a small shop where you can buy snacks or quick bites like Maggi or Bread Omelet. It is recommended to bring at least 1 liter of water per person in a reusable water bottle as there are no natural water sources available en route during the hike.

Physical & Mental Preparation Required for Trek

There is no longer an entry fee or local guides, so you’ll have the freedom to explore on your own. However, it’s recommended to start your trek early, at 6:00 AM, and finish before 3:00 PM.

When it comes to what to bring, make sure to have a waterproof backpack, comfortable trekking shoes with a good grip, and an ID proof. Additionally, it’s important to be mindful of the environment and not litter or cause noise pollution. If you have prior trekking experience, it’ll be beneficial, but it’s not required. The valley is at its prettiest after the monsoon season, with the entire valley covered by fog and the drive to Mekanagadde misty. So, get ready for a breathtaking experience!

devaramane betta trek

Location: Byrapura Village, Mudigere Taluk, Chikkamagaluru District, Karanataka, India

Altitude: 1300m (4265 ft)

Difficulty Level: Easy

Trek Distance: 3-4 KM

Trek Time: 1-1.5H Climb, 0.5H Descent

Ettina Bhuja translates best from Kannada to English as Ox’s hump. The name is derived from the hill’s appearance that resembles an Ox’s back. It is an easy trek and therefore attracts first-time trekkers. The hill is easily accessible and the route is well mapped. If you have never trekked before, this could be your gateway to the fascinating world of trekking. Located at the border of wilderness and civilisation, Ettina Bhuja is one of the best trekking options for beginners. Here is my detailed guide to plan your weekend getaway from Bangalore or Mangalore. Let's get going!

devaramane betta trek

Plan Your Trek

Best Time To Trek

The best time to trek Ettina Bhuja would be post Monsoon (September to November). During this time, the lush surroundings make this a refreshing trek. But beware of the leetches during this season. You may want to carry some salt to drive them away.

The next best option is to trek here during winter (December to March). Though the grasses would have now dried up, the surrounding Shola forests displays an interesting mix of colours.

Though open year round, it is better to avoid peak summer (April-May), only because of the heat.  Trekking Ettina Bhuja during the rains (June-August) can be dangerous as the trail gets slippery.

Ettina Bhuja trek does not require any prior permission. You can directly pay the fee (Rs 50 per person) to the forest guard stationed at the base. Camping is strictly prohibited in this area due to elephant movement. You could be fined heavily by the forest officers if found to be illegally camping.

There are plenty of things to do around Mudigere. Therefore, it would be great to fit in a weekend plan around this trek. Here is a rough weekend plan that you could choose to follow.

Friday Evening (Around 4PM): Leave Bangalore.

Friday night (Around 10PM): Reach Mudigere town and stay at a local lodge / Homestay in a Coffee plantation.

Saturday (Around 6AM): Drive to Nanya Byraveshwara temple and start trekking at around 7/8AM.

Saturday (Around 1PM): Back in Mudigere.

Saturday Evening (Around 4PM): Visit Devaramane Betta to view sunset.

Sunday Morning: Head to Mekkangadde Betta

Sunday around noon: Makajalli falls

Sunday Afternoon: Head back to Bangalore.

You can alter this itinerary based on your requirements. Belur, Halebeedu and Chikkamagaluru can be easily fit into this plan as well.

devaramane betta trek

How to Get there

To reach Ettina Bhuja you have to first reach Mudigere town, which is 250 km from Bangalore (5H drive). You have to take Bangalore-Hassan-Belur-Mudigere route. From Mudigere, take a deviation to Nanya Byraveshwara temple (25KM) located near Byrapura village. Google maps will direct you upto the temple. The road to this location is good. The last stretch is being laid, so it should be up and running soon.

You can take a KSRTC Sarige bus that ply between Bangalore and Mangalore via Charmadi ghat . You can also choose to take a bus to Hassan or Belur and from there, another to Mudigere. From Mudigere bus station, take a local bus to Byrapaura village. You will have to walk from the village to reach the Ettina Bhuja trek start point.

Where To Stay?

There are plenty of options to stay in this area. Between Mudigere and Ettina Bhuja, you will find a lot of coffee plantations who also run homestay. You could look up for the same on the internet. They charge anywhere from Rs2000-3000 per person for a day. The tariff generally includes food and accommodation.

If you do not want to spend money on a fancy homestay and coffee plantation visits, you can simply choose to stay in Mudigere town and drive to Ettina Bhuja next morning. Mudigere is only 25km from the Base of the hill and takes about an hour to reach there. MC Grand is a good lodge to stay at. They charge Rs 1400 for a double room. Rs1600 for triple room. Other options include Hotel Athithi,  Manjinahani lodging and stay. There is no need to book them in advance.

Things To Carry

This is a fairly easy trek and can be done without a lot of gears. However, here is my standard list of things to carry on a trek -

  • A good trekking shoe. (The last stretch in particular can be slippery and needs a good shoe. Avoid sandals and sports shoes)
  • A Water bottle. (At least 1-1.5l)
  • Some light food. (You can pack some Mangalore buns from Hotel Sri Ganesh Prasad near Mudigere bus station which opens at 6AM)
  • Sunscreen lotion
  • Carry a Poncho or jacket if you are trekking during the Monsoon.
  • Trekking pole (Optional)
  • A backpack to carry it all.

Where to Eat?

If you are staying in a homestay, the food is generally included in the tariff. If not, here are some of the restaurants I tried and loved. Hotel Sri Ganesh Prasad opens at 6AM and serves south Indian cuisine. Do try their Mangalore buns prepared early in the morning.

Annapurneshwari mess serves Thatte idli and Akki roti. This family run mess is worth a visit for its delicious local cuisine.

devaramane betta trek

There are two routes that lead to the summit of Ettina Bhuja - One from Mudigere side and the other from Shishila side (a small village in Dakshina Kannada district). To trek from Shishila, you will have to arrange a guide as it passes through a dense forest. The distance on this side is approximately 10KM and it is a longer trek. I have heard that this route is now prohibited. You could try to reach out to the villagers to find a guide. So, the most popular and the easiest route to hike up Ettina Bhuja is from Mudigere side. The Ettina Bhuja trek distance around 3 km from here. The details on this trail is given below.

The trail is pretty straight forward. As you approach the Nanya Byraveshwara temple, you will find the Ettina Bhuja Trek Starting point on your left. There is a sign board indicating the same. If you have doubts, please watch my video linked at the end of this post.

devaramane betta trek

Once you are on the trail, which is basically a jeep route, do not deviate until you see a small shed where a forest guard is present from 6AM to 4PM. The forest guard will collect a fee of Rs 50 per person and also inform you about the route ahead.

If the forest guard is not present during your visit, then just follow the jeep route until you reach the first junction. At the first junction, take a left. A fallen tree, if still exists, is your landmark. Continue on this route till you approach a second junction. Do not turn right or left here. Instead, take the narrow trail in front of you that will lead you to the grassland.

devaramane betta trek

If you take this trail, you will find yourself climbing the back of Ettina Bhuja; along the slope of the hump. From here on, the trail is pretty straight forward. Be prepared for a steep final climb.

The Ettina Bhuja trail is somewhere between 3-4km long and will take you around 1-1.5H to reach the summit. In case of any doubt, please watch the video at the end of this post for assistance.

Other Trekking Options Nearby

Devaramane Betta (22KM from Mudigere) is a small hill popular for viewing sunset. At the base, there is an ancient Chola temple - Sri Kalabhairaveshwara Swaami Gudi.

Mekkanagadde or also known as Pandavara betta is another easy trek around this area. It is located in Maraganda village (26KM from Mudigere). You can find your direction to this beautiful ancient temple called  Bettada Bhairaveshwara. Behind the temple, you can find the trail to Mekkanagandde betta/Pandavara betta. It is an easy climb. There are two peaks. Make sure to climb the second peak to get a spectacular view of the forest area and neighbouring hills, including Ettina Bhuja.

devaramane betta trek

Other Attractions Nearby

Magajahalli Falls / Abbi falls is located 28KM from Mudigere town. During Monsoon, it is dangerous to take a shower there. But during winter, enjoy a refreshing shower under the waterfall.

You can also visit the historical temples of Angadi (18KM from Mudigere town). This place was previously known as Sasakapura or Sosevur which was the original home of the Hoyasalas (of Hoysala empire) who rose to great power in South India. There are temples dedicated to Keshava, Veerabhadra, and Mallikarjuna.

The magnificent Hoysala temples of Belur (37KM from Mudigere), Halebeedu (54KM from Mudigere) and Belavadi (64KM) are not very far off either.

You can also choose to drive to Chikkamagaluru (30KM).

My Experience

devaramane betta trek

Though  Ettina Bhuja is  an easy trek, it is also one of the most exciting treks I have done in the western ghats. We stayed in Mudigere town and drove to Ettina Bhuja early in the morning. The trek took us not more than an hour. There were only a  few people trekking on that day. The view from the summit was mesmerising. We sat there for almost 2 hours, soaking in the beautiful views that lay around us.

devaramane betta trek

As mentioned in the itinerary, I fit in Devaramane betta, Mekkangaddee Betta, Majakalli falls in this trip. On our way back we had lunch at a small Udupi restaurant called Hotel New Alankar in Hanabal town. It was delicious and I would highly recommend you to try their meal served on a plantain leaf.
