Helicopter tour in Medellin Itinerary

Within 24 hours of receiving the confirmation of your reservation we’ll be in contact with you in English to give you all the recommendations and ask for further information required for the activity.

And then the adventure begins at your hotel where we pick you up in a private vehicle and take you to the hangar.

Once we get to the local airport (somewhere around10 to 15 minutes drive from El Poblado) we will be welcomed by our partners for this activity, the helicopter company.

After this we’ll take you in a different vehicle inside the hangar to a comfortable room where we will wait for around 30 minutes to be called to start our experience.

At this room you will be introduced to a short video with instructions to be considered when you are in the helicopter, your bilingual driver will be with you at all times.

When its our turn we’ll drive you to the helicopter to start the experience. The flying time is somewhere around 13 to 15 minutes and around 40 kilometers equivalent to 25 miles.

Before getting into the helicopter you are provided with ear plugs so you go more comfortable and then the adventure begins.

Some of the many places of Medellin you will see during the flight are:

• Pueblito Paisa (Replica of a traditional town)
• Medellin stadium
• Botanical Garden
• Comuna 13 (where the graffiti tour takes place)

You will many places that are less known but look amazing from the air.

This experience will also show the contrast of the city since we fly over hundreds of neighborhoods and can see with your own eyes the difference of conditions among them.

Once our experience is over and we have a smile in our faces and a forever lasting memory then we are ready to drive back at your place of stay in Medellin.

This is a tour full of good memories and beautiful views of this city that will leave you very satisfied.

We created one of the most thrilling, adrenaline-packed helicopter tours in the world, the Heli Jump. This used to be a Medellín to Guatapé helicopter tour where you end up jumping into the lake from a flying helicopter. However, we were ordered by the authorities to cease the activity due to noise restrictions, but we redesigned a new and even more awesome HeliJump!

We are leaving the Guatapé HeliJump page up so you can see all the fun and pictures, but our new HeliJump tour is about jumping into a secluded jungle canyon river to waiting rafts, then continuing with Class III/IV white water rafting! All the info here.

Amazing views of the Metro Area of Medellín and all ten municipalities

Then towering mountains, cloud forests, rivers, and  the lake of guatapé.

We start the day with a morning pick-up at your place of residence. We then head to the local Olaya Herrera airport located in the heart of Medellín to the helicopter hangar. Here we will do a technical and safety briefing on the proceedings of the day including drills on how to properly enter and exit the helicopter.

There is a whole team of people behind a whole lot of gear involved in the Heli-Jump. There are helicopters, speedboats, jet skis, drones, GoPros, telephoto cameras, radios, and 4×4 SUVs all working like clockwork to carry out this adrenaline-packed adventure helicopter tour in Guatapé lake while the majestic Rock of El Peñol and the beautiful Colombian mountains serve as a backdrop to all the excitement!

The maximum number of people in each helicopter is 4. We have 3 helicopters allowing us to do 12 people simultaneously!

There are more ways than one to going around doing the Heli-Jump. The basic run is the tour starting from Medellín, buzzing the rock, jumping, and then hopping back onto the helicopter to return to the city.

The per group (up to 4 pax) cost basic run (without jetskis or other customizations) is 7,300,000 COP. 

There's other activities you can bundle into the day ... ... like jumping into the water to awaiting jetskis or wakeboard ...

… or go ATVing through the forests, or hang gliding … there are many possibilities on this helicopter tour in Medellín! Including staying for a ground tour of Guatapé, the rock of El Peñol, and the town to furthermore return by ground transportation to Medellín.

On the other hand, the helicopter can wait for a return flight to Medellín from Guatapé so you don’t have to do the one hour forty-five minute drive back.

Gaunabana Tours exceeded my expectations in delivering a super high adrenaline experience way to tour Gautape. We did the helicoptor ride from Medellin to Guatape with the heli-drop, bout tour of Guatape, followed by lunch and climb of the Rock at Penol. This was a quasi-bachelorette trip for me, and I surprised & treated my sister and two of my girlfriends to the day tour. While I don’t think that everyone would initially have loved the idea of a helicoptor ride with no doors, followed by jumping 30-40 feet to the lake, I don’t think that anyone had any regrets! We had such a blast!

What to expect during the Medellín helicopter tour:

Flying in a helicopter is a pretty epic experience, especially when the purpose of the flight is for sightseeing! Rather than having to weave your way through traffic or crowds, you’ll be able to see the beautiful city of Medellín from hundreds of feet in the air. Given that it’s known as the “city of eternal spring”, the chances are usually good of having amazingly clear views during your ride.

There will be some safety precautions to observe (more on that later), and it’s important that you follow the instructions of your tour guide/pilot. You’ll also be provided with appropriate safety equipment, such as noise-cancelling earplugs or headphones.

Fly Over Medellin like a Bird

The typical Medellín helicopter tour takes about 15-20 minutes to fly over key parts of the city. Your guide (who will be fluent in English) will tell you about the identity and history of each part of the city, and point out the contrasts between them. You’ll see the bustling center, as well as some of the quieter suburbs.

Tour over Santa Elena’s flower farms

As you can imagine, the fields of flowers are quite a sight – especially when you see them from a helicopter! This tour will start out in Medellín, and then pass over Santa Elena. The opportunities for perfect pictures are unmatched here, as you’ll get a bird’s-eye view of countless flower fields as well as Medellín’s cityscapes.

Flight from Medellin to Guatape

You’ll be able to choose between a one-way trip, or a round-trip. For those who want to spend several hours exploring the town, a one-way trip would be ideal. You can take your time enjoying yourself, and then catch a bus back to Medellín. This gives you the chance to not only explore the town, but also to check out La Piedra del Peñón, a 220-meter-high rock that’s one of the area’s most famous landmarks.

A round-trip helicopter tour will give sightseers about an hour or two in Guatape, which is plenty of time to walk around the center, snap some photos, and taste some of the best artisanal coffee in Colombia.

Important safety tips for flying in a helicopter

For many people, taking one of the Medellín helicopter tours will be their first time riding in a helicopter. With this in mind, here are some safety tips that should be followed at all times.

• Wait to approach the helicopter until the pilot or a crew member is available to escort you.
• Never approach a helicopter from the rear; the tail propellers make this the most dangerous part of the helicopter. Always approach the front of the machine, and distance yourself from the rotor blades by crouching.
• It’s recommended that passengers with long hair pull it back in a secure ponytail or bun.
• You’ll be getting on and off of the helicopter while the rotors are still turning, which will generate a lot of forceful wind. Anything that’s loose – flip flops, sunglasses, hats, jewelry, or other accessories – could be blown away. For the best possible experience, avoid wearing these things for your helicopter tour, or keep them secured in a bag.
• Wear long pants and a long-sleeve shirt or jacket; it’s considerably cooler in the helicopter than it is at ground level.
• When getting on or off the helicopter, make sure your valuables (wallet, phone, keys, etc.) are secured in a compact carrier, not just held in your hands.
• You’ll likely be given a seat assignment, and this is important to observe. The balance of the helicopter depends on the placement of the passengers, so switching seats or moving around could be a safety risk.
• Always wear your seatbelt!
• Wait for the pilot’s go-ahead signal before exiting the helicopter.
• Always obey the instructions of the pilot.

Tips for getting amazing pictures from the helicopter

Snapping some epic photos is half the point of a helicopter tour, so you might as well know how to get the absolute best pictures from several hundred feet in the air!

• Wear darker-colored clothes with no patterns, as these are less likely to cause a reflection in the window.
• Use high shutter speeds for clearer photos.
• Hold the camera near the window, but not against it – you don’t want to pick up the vibrations of the helicopter in your picture.
