Loyola university chicago: a brief history and campus tour.

Rogers Park Apartments

A Brief History

Loyola has grown extensively over the last century and is a beloved Chicago academic institution. According to theculturetrip.com , “ Loyola University Chicago had humble beginnings. It was founded in 1870 by Jesuits as St. Ignatius College, where present-day St. Ignatius College Prep is located. It became Loyola in 1909 and moved to its current location alongside Lake Michigan in the Rogers Park neighborhood in 1912.”  Today, Loyola educates more than 16,000 students.

It is known worldwide for “being the only college in Illinois to win a NCAA basketball championship title in 1963” and “for the men’s volleyball team and their back-to-back NCAA titles in 2014 and 2015.”  A former member of that team went on to win a bronze medal with the USA national team at the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Today, Loyola boasts five additional campuses beyond the flagship campus, bringing their commitment to academic excellence to people worldwide.

Within the last 20 years, the school has seen more growth than ever. Loyola “has become a leader in nationally recognized sustainability practices[…] Lakeshore Campus was ranked as the fourth greenest college in America by the Sierra Club in 2014 thanks to the new Institute of Environmental Sustainability building that houses aquaponics facilities, a geothermal facility, and extensive environmental research labs”.

Loyola’s history runs deep within Chicago, bringing new technologies and new neighbors to the city. Along with the academic offerings, the campus is a huge draw for prospective students, and with beautiful buildings preserved over the last 100 years, the vintage charm of the campus shines through.

Notable Buildings

Cudahy library.

Right on the lakefront of campus, you will find Cudahy, the favorite library of Loyola students. With a vast collection of books and little spots to tuck in and study, this library is a peaceful haven for those seeking a quiet escape from the city’s hustle. With incredible views and a relaxing environment, this spot is a hallmark of Loyola’s campus.

Lewis Library

With a modern feel, the open-concept Lewis Library was built to foster group work and collaboration. With many reservable rooms, this is the perfect spot for you and your group to get together and study. Their website tells us that the library is home to the “criminal justice, economics, education, and social work collections.” and that “the Lewis physical collections comprise more than 250,000 volumes and 1,500 periodical subscriptions; online resources include hundreds of research databases, thousands of e-books, and over 35,000 journal titles.” Modern and huge, this library is located along a busy Chicago street where you can watch city life pass by as you study.

The Mundelein College Skyscraper

Loyola has excellent programs in arts and performance as well as other creative avenues. A beloved part of campus is the Mundelein College Skyscraper. Not always a center for performing arts, it’s been a staple on the north side of Chicago for almost 100 years. According to LUC.edu – “In 1930, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) opened the ornate metalwork doors of the Mundelein College Skyscraper building to students for the first time. In 1980, the steel and concrete building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its Art Deco design and its unique place in history as the only self-contained modern skyscraper constructed for the express purpose of educating women. […] In 2008, the building was restored and is now home to Loyola’s Mundelein Center for Fine and Performing Arts.”

Madonna della Strada Chapel, Loyola University

Probably one of the most well-known buildings on Loyola’s campus is their famous Madonna della Strada Chapel. Luc.edu says that this iconic chapel is “Loyola University Chicago’s main chapel. Unlike diocesan parishes, Madonna della Strada Chapel is operated and maintained by the University, and it functions as an apostolic outreach of the Jesuits on campus, serving a diverse and transient congregation”. Renovated between 2006 and 2007, the Chapel is now equipped with more modern technology while keeping its gorgeous Art Deco style alive. It’s also known for its incredible stained glass windows with their own unique history that can be found here .

Loyola Medicine Allergy Count Returns

Published 04/01/2024

MAYWOOD, IL – For more than 20 years, Loyola Medicine's Gottlieb Memorial Hospital has provided the Chicago area with updated allergy counts every weekday during allergy season. This year's official count will resume on Monday, April 1. Allergy sufferers can follow  @LoyolaAllergy  on X (formerly know as Twitter) or visit  loyolamedicine.org/allergy-count  for the latest numbers.

Rachna Shah, MD , leads the Loyola Medicine Allergy Count and warns that tree pollen counts are already rising due to the recent unseasonably warm weather. “At the beginning of February, some of my patients started to say, ‘I feel like I’m sneezing more, have itchy eyes, a runny nose, and drainage in the back of the throat;’ all of the symptoms typical of spring allergies. Typically, I don’t see maple pollen until maybe mid-April to May. I was already seeing that a few weeks ago."

She advises allergy sufferers to stay informed, "Allergy counts are important to help monitor symptoms and prepare for the day." When pollen levels are high, she recommends people with severe pollen allergies stay indoors, but if that's not practical, "pollen counts are highest before 10 a.m., so try shifting activities to later in the day. And if you do outdoor activities for more than a couple hours, it can be really helpful to come inside, rinse off, and change clothes."

In this video , Dr. Shah explains how the count is performed. Pollen samples are gathered every weekday morning from the roof of  Gottlieb Memorial Hospital . Pollen grains and mold spores are collected from a cubic meter air sample and counted under a microscope. The counts include daily numbers for mold, tree, grass and weed pollens.

Spring allergies often cause itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion and post-nasal drip. Difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing and/or shortness of breath can also be triggered by seasonal allergies.

Allergy season commonly runs from March through the first hard freeze in October. Tree pollen generally begins to rise in late March to April, grass pollen arrives in May and June, while weed pollen is most prevalent in July to August. Ragweed typically peaks from late August to the first frost and mold can strike in damp conditions throughout the season.

The daily allergy count is easy to track by following  @LoyolaAllergy  on X (formerly know as Twitter). For more information, please visit  loyolamedicine.org/allergy-count . B-roll of Dr. Shah conducting the allergy account is available to download  at this link .

Trademark tale: from a mistaken coca-cola enthusiast to aspiring ip attorney.

Author : Clara Finger Assistant Blogger Loyola University Chicago School of Law, JD 2026

Interviewer: “So, what’s your favorite Coca-Cola product?”

Me: I draw a blank at the simple question, trying to think of any Coca-Cola product in existence. A picture of the classic Coca-Cola can flashes in my mind; the bold cursive letters against the vibrant red background. “Well, it has to be Coca-Cola, of course!”

Interviewer, somewhat skeptical: “The original Coca-Cola?”

Me: “That’s the one! It takes me right back to being a kid on a hot summer day, grilling in the backyard. I would reach for an ice-cold can of Coca-Cola from the cooler. The white lettering against the red background is unmistakable.” Why did I just describe the Coca-Cola logo? She [the interviewer] obviously knows what it looks like.

You want the truth? Was I head over heels for classic Coca-Cola back then? Not really. Did backyard family grills feature Coca-Cola as a regular? Also not the case. In reality, our family leaned towards Sprite (which is still a Coca-Cola product!). But alas, nerves, in their infinite wisdom, decided to stage a hostile takeover of my brain. The image of the logo led me to blurt out “Coca-Cola”–like a magician pulling the wrong rabbit out of a hat.

Despite that, I landed a marketing internship with Reyes Coca-Cola (a bottler and distributor of Coca-Cola brands) as an undergraduate. Little did I know that the popular logo I had imagined in my initial interview would steer me toward a career in Intellectual Property (IP).

The Influence of “Coca-Cola” As a campus marketing intern, I dove into the world of branding. I executed marketing projects and observed how students perceive Coca-Cola products .

As I carried out my marketing initiatives, I discovered that people had an impactful relationship with the Coca-Cola logo. I noticed that regardless of what products or merchandise we offered, the standout feature at every event was the bold red and white “Coca-Cola” logo displayed on either a tablecloth or a backdrop. Students would crowd at our stand like moths to a flame, lured in by the unmistakable script and red backdrop. The purpose of marketing is to generate interest in products, and our team found that the key to initiating this process was to use the Coca-Cola logo to grab the attention of consumers.

Recognizing the influence of the Coca-Cola trademark prompted me to enroll in a trademark law class the following semester. As an undergrad, I had the unique opportunity to enroll in the trademark law class at the University of Minnesota Law School with a dynamic group of law students. It was this course that made the relationship between branding and trademarks click for me.

My First Trademark Law Class (as an undergrad) On the first day of class, I learned the formal definition of a trademark : a unique symbol, word, or design that acts as a source identifier for a good or service. I thought back to the Coca-Cola logo that had come to mind during my interview. The logo is a prime example of a trademark because it’s a unique symbol that helps people connect a product to a specific company (i.e. source identifier).

As consumers, we interact with trademarks on a regular basis. For example, imagine scanning for the familiar red and white Coca-Cola logo in the beverage aisle. We scan for the Coca-Cola logo because it indicates the “real” coke as opposed to something like Whole Foods Cola (pictured above). Naturally, this practice goes far beyond the beverage industry and into the vast landscape of the consumer market.

Think about buying a new computer, for instance. When you see the glowing apple on the back of a laptop, you instantly recognize it as an Apple product. The apple isn’t just a decoration; it’s their trademark, a mark that signals you are getting a genuine Apple computer rather than another brand (e.g. Dell , Microsoft , etc.). I learned in my trademark class that consumer recognition of these logos is important.

As the semester went on, the course covered how to optimally protect trademarks and enforce trademark rights. My view of trademarks transformed from mere symbols to legal assets. After exploiting the Coca-Cola trademark during my internship, it made sense why companies often go to great lengths to establish and protect their trademarks. By the end of the course, I knew a career in IP was something I wanted to pursue because I enjoyed the subject material and could see a lifelong career built on it.

Exploring IP at Loyola In my first semester at Loyola University Chicago School of Law , I joined the IP Law Society . This gave me the opportunity to network with fellow law students and seasoned IP attorneys.

One of my favorite events of this past semester was the “No STEM Degree? No Problem” panel. I was able to learn from IP attorneys without a STEM background about the diverse array of projects they work on. These projects included managing trademark portfolios (protecting and administering trademarks) and litigating patents (a suit over unlawful use of a patent). I also participated in the IP Speed Networking event hosted at Loyola. I connected with 20 IP attorneys and learned about their experiences in different legal settings, including roles in-house and at big law firms.

My enrollment in the IP legal writing section has allowed me to develop my legal writing skills while learning more about IP. Last semester, I wrote a legal memorandum concerning a patented pancake mix.

Lastly, Professor Ho , Loyola’s IP Program Director, has supported me in exploring various career paths in this field. She keeps me informed about valuable networking opportunities and job prospects.

“Coca-Cola” Saved the Day and Led the Way It’s safe to assume that Coca-Cola’s iconic trademark saved the day during my interview. Had I not been able to name even the most obvious Coca-Cola product, the outcome of my job interview likely would have been different. From the marketing internship to enrolling in a trademark law class, I went from viewing a mark with a marketing perspective to a legal one.

As I navigate law school at Loyola, I am excited to explore all the facets of intellectual property.

Eclipse watchers pour into Carbondale as Southern Illinois welcomes 200,000

By Albert Ramon , Marie Saavedra

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 10:16 PM CDT / CBS Chicago

CARBONDALE, Ill. (CBS) -- Families and eclipse watchers flocked into Carbondale, Illinois, to view Monday's eclipse, and there was plenty more to see and do in addition.

During non-eclipse times, Carbondale is known as the home not just of SIU but also of wine trails, a DIY punk rock scene, and the nearby hippie enclave of Makanda. But for the second time in a decade, the eyes of the state and the country have been on Carbondale as a site of totality for a solar eclipse.

Southern Illinois played host to about 200,000 people pouring in from all over to be there at totality. Only about 21,700 people live in Carbondale.

The city welcomed visitors ahead of time with a block party featuring bands, food, and drink on Sunday evening once the rain moved out.

Another big draw was an Astronomy, Science, and Technology Expo on Southern Illinois University's campus, where people could pick up their eclipse glasses, play around with science, and buy those important 2024 eclipse souvenirs.

Three brothers, two who live in Chicagoland and the third in Carbondale, were together to witness the eclipse in 2017 . They came together to witness it again this time.

"Everybody talks about it being a miracle," said Scott Mitchner. "It is kind of a miracle. And it's a very amazing thing to see. And that first time, I know I'll never forget that. And I'm looking forward to a second time."

That togetherness was a major theme in Carbondale -- getting to see something so awe-inspiring with friends and family.

The excitement built throughout the day on Monday.

In the time leading up to the totality, Saluki Stadium was abuzz with activity. A vocal group naturally sang "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler to accompany choreographed dancing and mascots. Meanwhile, groups of students held up orbs representing the earth, moon, and sun, and ran in circles with the moon to symbolize its orbit.

Weather balloons were also launched about three separate times – carrying packages to take measurements and images.

When the time finally came around at 2 p.m. Monday, crowds were packed in Saluki Stadium for the historic, moving, and incredible experience as the moon blocked 100% of the sun. Cheers erupted as the last bit of sunlight wrapped around the moon, turning the skies pitch dark.

It only lasted 4 minutes and 8 seconds. But it was unforgettable for everyone present.

A crowd of 15,000 gathered at the stadium alone, but people were camped out all over campus on blankets.

Hotels and Airbnbs were booked all around, such that Marie Saavedra, Albert Ramon, and their crews were put up in SIU dorms.

Todd Heideman and his family came all the way from Chicago's Lincoln Square neighborhood.

"Oh my God, yes, it was incredible. We were here in 2017, and we all were like, yeah, we got to see it through a cloud, you know, just like for five seconds," Heideman said. "And today was like, oh my God, this is amazing. It was unbelievable."

"It was the most spectacular thing I ever saw!" added his son.

Two teachers from the southwest suburbs ditched school Monday to come to Carbondale and see the total eclipse.

"In 2017, we heard that the clouds were a little thicker – so we made the better choice, didn't we?" said one of the two women. "And I felt so small – you know, at first, that's what I want to say – but also unity, with the world. You know, really, we're all experiencing this together. And it's an experience that we'll never possibly have again."

Of course, one of the very few downsides to the flood of people into Carbondale was the prospect of traffic going back upstate to the Chicago area. Some reported that for the previous eclipse in 2017, it took some people up to 13 hours to get home.

It was also an incredible day Monday in the Chicago suburb of Elgin , where district administrators started preparing for the solar eclipse two years ago to ensure students could experience the partial eclipse on Monday.

"It's honestly beautiful," Elgin High School student Aidan Bicocchi said as he observed the eclipse through protective eyewear in the Elgin High School Football Stadium.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Elgin High School student Emilia Rodriguez.

While Carbondale was on the path of totality for the eclipse in both 2017 and 2024, it will not happen in Southern Illinois again for around 300 years.

Chicago does not have to wait quite as long – but still a very long time. The totality for an eclipse in Chicago will next be seen in 2099.
