Shimla used to be the summer capital of the British Raj when they ruled India. Now it's the state capital of Himachal Pradesh. The town sprawls along a mountain ridge, enveloped in oak, pine and rhododendron forests. It's quite famous for its colonial-style buildings and historic railway. Some would stay it's overdeveloped and crowded these days. However, it still has charm. The old Christ Church, with its beautiful stained glass windows, is one of Shimla's most prominent landmarks. Another is the Viceregal Lodge on Observatory Hill. These can be seen on a historic walking tour of Shimla. There are plenty of adventure sports and short hikes on offer in the vicinity as well. Manali, with its soothing backdrop of the Himalayas, offers a blend of tranquility and adventure that makes it one of northern India's most popular destinations. You can do as little or as much as you want there. Located in the Kullu Valley, it's a magical place bordered by heady pine forest and the raging Beas River, which give it a special energy. The area is divided in to commercial Manali Town, and laid-back Old Manali where travelers congregate in inexpensive village guesthouses . Close to Manali, Solang Valley draws the crowds to experience snow. Plan your trip there with this Manali travel guide .

The Parvati Valley

As the season wanes in Goa, the psychedelic trance scene shifts more than 8,000 feet above sea level into the forest around Kasol, in the Kullu District's Parvati Valley. Festivals take place at Chalal, near Kasol, from late May until October. To get there, walk 30 minutes from Kasol, crossing the cable suspension bridge over the Parvati River and then following the picturesque riverside path to the village. Two of the biggest events are Parvati Peaking and Magica Festival . However, the Parvati Valley isn't all about parties. Another attraction near Kasol is Manikaran, with its hot springs and enormous riverside Sikh Gurudwara. The region has much to delight nature lovers and trekkers too. Find out more details in our pick of the top places to visit in the Parvati Valley .

Dalhousie is refreshingly less crowded than Shimla and Manali, and the surrounding Chamba Valley is a lesser-explored area of Himachal Pradesh. If you're after spectacular views, then Dalhousie is the place to find them. Spread over five hills at foot of the Dhauladhar mountain range, the town gets its name from founder Lord Dalhousie. It bares the distinct stamp of the British Raj with 19th-century churches and hotels reminiscent of that era.

Kalatope Wildlife Sanctuary is located a short drive away from Dalhousie. It's possible to walk through the sanctuary but a permit is necessary for a vehicle. Those who dare to venture further into the Chamba Valley will discover fascinating ancient folklore, temples, and tribes.

Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj

Nestled a short distance from each other in the Kangra Valley, the towns of Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj are home to the exiled Tibetan Government. The Dalai Lama resides in Dharamsala, and many Tibetans have followed him there. You can expect to find a strong Tibetan influence in the area, with culture being the main attraction. People flock to Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj to undertake Buddhist meditation and philosophy courses, Tibetan cooking classes, Tibetan language courses, and to receive alternative therapies. Volunteer work is another popular pastime. Those interested in sightseeing will find some fascinating museums, temples, gompas , and monasteries. Tsuglagkhang Complex , the official residence of the Dalai Lama, is a highlight. Our list of the top things to do in McLeod Ganj has more details.

Unfortunately, a growing influx of tourists has disturbed the peace in Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj. Head further uphill to Dharamkot or Naddi if this is a concern.

Palampur, Himachal Pradesh's tea growing region, is about an hour from Dharamsala in the Kangra Valley. Tea was introduced there in the mid 19th century by the Superintendent of Botanical Gardens in Peshawar, Doctor Jameson. You can visit the tea estates and even stay on one. The Lodge at Wah is an eco-friendly boutique homestay on Wah Tea Estate . It has eight rooms in three gorgeous, rustic cottages. Tea plantation and factory tours, and tea tastings are provided to guests.

If you're interested in pottery or art, don't miss quaint Andretta village, a 20 minute drive from Palampur in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. The village is said to have been established in the 1920s by Irish playwright Norah Richards, who lived there during the Partition and is credited with the rise of Punjabi theater. Later, noted potter Gurucharan Singh (who started Delhi Blue Pottery), and painter Sobha Singh (who was known for his Sikh religious paintings), settled there. The Sobha Singh Art Gallery, housed in the building where he lived, showcases his paintings and personal belongings. The mud-plastered cottage belonging to Norah Richards is another attraction.

Andretta Pottery and Craft Society, a pottery production center, offers three month pottery classes for serious students . Alternatively, you can try your hand at the pottery wheel and get a casual lesson. The Society apparently sells its rangoli-patterned earthenware to FabIndia in Delhi.

Andretta can be visited on a day trip from Dharamsala or Palampur. Otherwise, The Mirage is a delightful, arty place to stay there.

Bir-Billing

Go past the turnoff to Andretta from Palampur and you'll reach one of the world's best paragliding destinations at the twin towns of Bir and Billing. The 2015 Paragliding World Cup was held there, for the first time in India, in October 2015. The peak paragliding season runs from March to May and October to November. Billing Valley Adventures and Billing Adventures of Himachal  offer paragliding, trekking, and camping. Other attractions are tea gardens and monasteries. Serene Palpung Sherabling Monastery offers periodic courses in Buddhist meditation and philosophy. Deer Park Institute provides accommodations along with courses on Buddhist and Indian philosophy. Don't miss visiting the groovy 4Tables Project cafe and art gallery in Gunehar village near Bir. They now rent out gorgeous rooms too! Guided walks in the area can be arranged.

Rudyard Kipling described Spiti as a world within a world. This remote, high altitude area of Himachal Pradesh is tucked away against the border of Ladakh and Tibet. It's only been open to foreign tourists since 1991, and still remains relatively unexplored. Part of this is due to Spiti being barren alpine desert that's covered in heavy snow for a high proportion of the year. Getting to Spiti involves a long drive, most popularly from Manali. The constantly evolving scenery is unforgettable and well worth the journey though. Plan your trip with our comprehensive Spiti travel guide and see spectacular photos of the Spiti Valley .

Great Himalayan National Park

The Great Himalayan National Park, in the Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014. The park has four valleys and covers about 900 square kilometers. Its remote, rugged and untamed terrain makes it sought after by trekkers but only the fittest and most adventurous reach deep inside the core area. There are several trekking routes , ranging from three to eight days, with treks between the spectacular Tirthan and Sainj valleys being popular. In addition, less strenuous day walks exist in the park's Ecozone buffer area, frequented by day trippers. It's possible to go on tours to interact with the villagers and learn about their activities.

Ecotourism company Sunshine Himalayan Adventures has partnered with Biodiversity Tourism and Community Advancement (a community-based organization, comprised of local villagers) to offer treks and tours. Permits are required for treks. Indians must pay a park entry fee of 50 rupees per day, and foreigners 200 rupees per day. It's free to enter the Ecozone.

Raju's Cottage , a renowned homestay in Gushaini on the periphery of the park, is an ideal base or stopover. You'll need to book well in advance though!

Jibhi Valley

Mubarak Khan/Getty Images

Ex-Army man Bhagwan Singh Rana pioneered tourism in the Jibhi Valley , about an hour from the Great Himalayan National Park and three hours south of Manali on the road to Delhi. (Aut and Banjar are the closest towns). However, tourism didn't really take off there until after 2008, when the Himachal Pradesh government launched a homestay scheme. Jibhi is the perfect spot to slow down, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and immerse yourself in nature. Stay at Bhagwan Singh Rana's Doli Guesthouse or Swiss Cottages . Activities include day hikes and treks, organic farming, and meditation.

Himalayan Golden Triangle (Thanedhar, Sangla and Sojha)

Himanshu Khagta/Getty Images

This off-beat circuit, actively promoted by Banjara Camps , attracts outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy nature away from touristy areas. It starts in the heart of Himachal Pradesh's apple country, in Thanedhar (around two hours from Shimla), where you can stay at Banjara Orchard Retreat. The Sangla Valley is located 9,000 feet above sea level in Kinnaur District, close to the Tibetan border, and offers trout fishing and trekking (including glacier trekking in March and April). You can also visit Chitkul village, the last village on the old Indo-Tibetan trade route. Sojha links the Kullu and Shimla districts, and provides more opportunities to venture into the wild mountainous countryside.

During the spring and summer seasons, tourists can indulge in trekking, camping, paragliding, river rafting, and nature walks. The monsoon season offers opportunities for exploring the lush rainforests and enjoying the misty landscapes. Winter opens up avenues for skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating, and building snowmen.

The changing weather patterns affect agriculture, water availability, and the overall biodiversity of the region. Efforts are being made to raise awareness, promote sustainable practices, and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

In conclusion, Himachal Pradesh’s weather is as diverse as its landscapes. From the tropical foothills to the snow-covered peaks, the state experiences a wide range of climatic conditions throughout the year. Himachal Pradesh – Culture and Tradition

Himachal Pradesh – Culture and Tradition

Himachal Pradesh is a hilly state in Northern India. It is one of the most beautiful states of India and known more of as a tourist state, lies in the lap of the King of Mountains, Himalaya, nestling in the lap of nature, it is endowed with lush green forests, bushing streams, emerald meadows, enchanting lakes, and the eternal snows.

The state is bordered by Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on the west and south-west, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh on the south, Uttarakhand on the south-east and by the Tibet Autonomous Region on the east.

Himachal derives its origin from two Hindi words ‘Him’ and ‘Aanchal’, meaning  ‘Snow’ and ‘Lap’ respectively. Thus, etymologically, Himachal Pradesh stands for the region which lies in the slopes and foothills of the Himalayas. Hence Himachal literally means in the lap of snow-covered mountains. It was named by Acharya Diwakar Datt Sharma, one of the great Sanskrit scholars and astrologers of Himachal Pradesh.

Most of the snow-draped peaks, hilltops, banks of lakes and rivers, or natural caves have been considered as sacred as the Adobe of Gods. It is also popularly known as “ Dev Bhoomi ” or Land of Gods.

Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, is the third smoke-free city in India. Shimla has served as the Capital of India during the British Raj, the capital of Punjab, and then the capital of Himachal.

Himachal Pradesh has been inhabited by human beings since the dawn of civilization. It has a rich and varied history which can be divided into several distinct eras. Himachal Pradesh region was called ‘ Deva Bhoomi ’. In the early period, tribes like the Koilis, Halis, Dagis, Dhaugris, Dasa, Khasas, Kinnars, and Kirats inhabited it.

The Aryan influence in this area of India dates to the period before the Rigveda. Sankar Varma, the king of Kashmir exercised his influence over regions of Himachal Pradesh in about 883 AD.

This region witnessed the invasion of Mahmud of Ghazni in 1009 AD, who during that period invaded and looted the wealth from the temples in the North of India.

In about 1043 AD the Rajputs ruled over this territory. Known for its vibrant and exquisite natural scenery it received the royal patronage of the Mughal rulers who erected several works of art as an appreciation of this land.

In 1773 AD the Rajputs under Sansar Chand possessed this region, till the attack by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1804 which crushed the Rajput power here. The Gurkhas who migrated from Nepal captured this area and devastated it.

In the early 19th century the British exercised their influence and annexed the areas of Shimla after the Gurkha War of 1815-16. The British gradually emerged as the paramount power in the region. During the first Indian war of independence, rulers of hilly states remain inactive. The rulers of Chamba, Bilaspur, Bhagal, and Dhami, rendered help to the British government during the revolt. During World War I, virtually all rulers of the hill states remained loyal and contributed to the British war effort, both in the form of men and materials.

The Chief Commissioner’s province of H.P. came into being on 15th April 1948. This Pradesh became a part C state on 26th January 1950 with the implementation of the Constitution of India. Bilaspur was merged with Himachal Pradesh on 1st July 1954. Himachal Pradesh became Union Territory on 1st November 1956. Kangra and most of the other hill areas of Punjab were merged with Himachal Pradesh on 1st November 1966 though its status remained that of a Union Territory. On 18th December 1970, the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25th January 1971.

Thus, Himachal Pradesh emerged as the eighteenth state of the Indian Union. It became a centrally administered territory in 1948 with the integration of 31 hill states and received additional regions added to it in 1966.

Himachal Pradesh Culture

Himachal Pradesh is a multireligious, multicultural as well as a multilingual state like other Indian states. In the south of the Greater Himalayas, the presence of Hinduism is strong. In the middle hills, rustic customs appear in worship or many local ‘gods’ and ‘goddess’. In Trans Himalaya, Buddhism has progressed successfully for more than 1,000 years. The presence of Christianity comes with the coming of the British and there are more than a dozen churches in this area in the state. Similarly, there are many places in the entire state which are sacred by the Sikhs.   Islam records its presence in Nahan and some of the major cities around.

Cultural and geographically, there are three well-defined areas of the state. ‘Adivasi belt’ belongs to Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts, it is largely Buddhist and the language is related to the Himalayan Belt of Tibetan-Burmese. The middle belts embrace this band and are characterized by wild hills and farmland valleys – with slopes, villages, farms, and orchards. Sub-healthy people of Himachal practice farming and this region is traditionally the largest concentration of population. Culture has been fostered by discrete people who live harmoniously on the same land.

The official language of this state is Pahari and Hindi. Some of the most commonly spoken individual languages are Kangri, Mandeali, Kulvi, Chambeali, Bharmauri, and Kinnauri.

himachali-cuisine

There are not many specific varieties that one can get in Himachal Pradesh. A long-time relationship with Punjab and large-scale migration of Tibetans ensured the impact of the Tibetan and Punjabi cuisine on Himachal.

Some of the unique Himachali cuisines include Nasasta ( a sweetmeat) in the Kangra region; Indra ( made of Urad dal ), Baadi / Shaunda, and Bada/Poldu in the Shimla region; apart from favorites all over the state like Pateer, Chuck, Bhagjery and chutneys of Til ( sesame seeds ).

Join us on a tour through vivid festivals, traditional music and dance , and warm local hospitality. Our exploration promises a comprehensive encounter into the soul-stirring culture that defines Himachal Pradesh, from the beautiful dresses that whisper tales of millennia to the aromatic flavours of Himachali cuisine . Let’s take a look at the culture of Himachal Pradesh !

Traditional Culture of Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh, nestled in the Himalayas, has a traditional culture as diverse as its gorgeous landscapes. Himachal Pradesh’s traditional culture is a lively tapestry of customs, festivals, music, dance, and architecture that is rooted in a strong relationship with nature and influenced by centuries of history.

The diverse array of celebrations that characterise Himachali culture is one of its key features. Among the most famous is Kullu Dussehra, which is observed in the Kullu Valley with an intensity never seen before. The week-long celebration is characterised by processions, cultural shows, and the customary “rath yatra,” which highlights the people’s intense religious and cultural fervour.

The cultural environment of Himachal Pradesh is enhanced by the rhythmic charm of its ancient music and dance traditions. The vibrant dance known as Nati, which is done at different festivities, captures the people’s excitement and exuberance. Nati is a rhythmic celebration of life in the hills, accompanied by indigenous instruments such as the dhol, nagara, and shehnai.

Himachal Pradesh’s architecture is just another indication of its unique culture. Temples such as the Hidimba Devi Temple in Manali and the Bhimakali Temple in Sarahan, with their elaborate wooden carvings and unique pagoda-style architecture, are examples of the region’s architectural legacy, showcasing expert craftsmanship and devotion. The historic homes, which are frequently decorated with vibrant frescoes, mix in perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

Himachal Pradesh’s culture is preserved in large part through its cuisine. With meals like Sidu, a wheat flour bread, and Madra, a savoury and aromatic preparation with lentils or chickpeas, Himachali cuisine is a pleasant voyage through flavours. These gastronomic treats not only entice the palate but also showcase the ingenuity of the inhabitants in harnessing the resources found in the hilly landscape.

The kindness and warmth of the Himachali people extend beyond these outward manifestations and are an essential part of the state’s traditional culture. Guests are greeted with open arms, whether they are taking part in local fairs, mingling with villagers, or enjoying a cup of traditional Kangra tea, making for an amazing experience that embodies the spirit of Himachal Pradesh’s cultural legacy. The customs of Himachal Pradesh are shown in every event observed, dance executed, and cuisine enjoyed, beckoning everyone to partake in its enduring allure.

Traditional Dress of Himachal Pradesh

2 65dedf4e50222

Himachal Pradesh’s traditional attire is a vivid representation of the state’s varied cultural fabric, which is shaped by the state’s climate as well as the unique identities of its many groups. Women wear the ‘Pahari’ or ‘Kangra’ style saree, which is decorated with elaborate embroidery, in the Kangra Valley. It is worn with a matching blouse and traditional jewellery. On the other side, men dress in a kurta, churidar, and a long coat known as a “Dora” or “Chola,” coupled with a traditional cap called a “Chola” or “Pahari Topi.”

As we move to the Kullu Valley, men wear the “Pattu” or “Kulluvi Topi,” “Chola,” “Chadru,” and “Pahari” trousers, while ladies wear elaborately patterned “Jama” and a “Pattu Topi.” In the Chamba Valley, men wear the “Pahari Topi,” “Chola,” and “Pahari” shawl, while ladies display their beautiful embroidered “Ghagra” and “Choli” combined with a “Dupatta.”

Women wear the “Thipu” headgear, “Chuba,” and silver jewellery in Lahaul and Spiti Valley, while males wear the “Thipu” cap, “Chuba,” pants and a woollen scarf. These traditional garments have a dual purpose: keeping warm in the chilly weather and reflecting the artistic sensitivities of the area.

Every valley has its distinct style that reflects the historical influences and cultural subtleties of the local people. The vivid colours, dexterous stitching, and unique embellishments of Himachal Pradesh’s traditional clothing bear witness to the state’s rich history and variety.

Traditional Cuisine of Himachal Pradesh

The delicious traditional cuisine of Himachal Pradesh is a lovely representation of the state’s varied cultural influences and the ingredients that may be found in its hilly topography. Sidu, a well-known delicacy consisting of steamed wheat flour and yeast bread, is frequently accompanied by regional curd or ghee. Popular Tibetan noodle soup called thukpa sometimes includes dumplings called momos along with meat and veggies. Rice, chickpea flour and, yoghurt-based Madra, and red kidney beans (Rajma) are some of the items served at the annual feast known as Dham.

The Kullu region is well known for its fried or grilled trout, which is marinated beforehand. The robust and fragrant flavours of Himachali cuisine are exhibited in the fiery lamb or mutton dish called Chha Gosht. A popular morning dish is babru, which is deep-fried bread filled with black gramme paste and frequently served with tamarind chutney.

Another unusual food is Khatta, a hot and acidic concoction flavoured with jaggery, tamarind, and spices that is cooked with pumpkin or other vegetables. A traditional celebration beverage, chhaang is an alcoholic fermented drink prepared from rice or barley.

The utilisation of regional ingredients like the aromatic Chhaang and dishes like Sidu Sidu, a steamed bread packed with crushed black gramme and spices, demonstrate the diversity of Himachali cuisine. The inventiveness of the locals in adjusting to the difficult hilly terrain is reflected in the food, which offers filling and savoury dishes.

In summary, Himachal Pradesh’s traditional food honours the region’s rich cultural heritage while simultaneously meeting the practical demands of a rigorous workplace. It combines flavours from the region, Tibet, and North India, creating a culinary adventure that honours the history and tenacity of the people living in this stunning state.

These homestays don’t just provide a source of income; they’re a source of pride and empowerment.

Weaving Wonders:  Himachal Pradesh’s stunning handicrafts –  think intricate shawls, cozy carpets, and vibrant souvenirs – are largely created by skilled women artisans. Their work sustains traditional crafts and allows them to showcase their incredible talent to the wider world.

A Warm Welcome: The hospitality industry is another space where women are making their presence felt. From hotels and guesthouses to bustling restaurants, women contribute to making the tourist experience welcoming and enjoyable.

Adventurous Spirit:  Himachal Pradesh is an adventure tourism hotspot, and women are defying expectations here too!  They’re working as guides, trekking leaders, and instructors, sharing their love for the outdoors with eager visitors.

Opportunities Abound

Path to Independence:  Tourism empowers women in Himachal Pradesh by offering them pathways to economic independence and greater financial security. This newfound freedom can change the dynamics within families and communities for the better.

Learning and Growing:  The government and various organizations are stepping up with training and skill development programs specifically designed for women in tourism. These programs help women hone their skills, making them even more competitive in the job market and building successful businesses.

Weaving a Rich Tapestry: Women are often the keepers of Himachal Pradesh’s cultural heritage. Tourism gives them a platform to share traditional art forms, stories, and practices with a wider audience, enriching everyone involved.

Expanding Horizons:  Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds through tourism can be an eye-opening experience for women.  It broadens their world, builds confidence, and promotes open-mindedness.

Challenges Along the Way

However, women still face obstacles on their journey in tourism.  Traditional gender roles and stereotypes can sometimes hold them back, limiting their decision-making power and opportunities for advancement. Furthermore,  finding a healthy balance between work, family responsibilities, and their tourism ventures  can prove difficult.

Moreover, safety remains a concern, especially when women work in remote areas or during unconventional hours.  Access to financial resources, education, and technology can also be a barrier for some, making it harder to start and grow tourism-related businesses.

The Way Forward

To make tourism truly inclusive for women in Himachal Pradesh, we need supportive policies focused on gender equality and entrepreneurship support, continued investment in training and skill development, awareness campaigns to shift mindsets, and the creation of safe, welcoming work environments.

Women, with their resilience and dedication, are a force to be reckoned with in Himachal Pradesh’s tourism landscape. By addressing the challenges and maximizing opportunities, we can pave the way for even greater contributions to the state’s sustainable and inclusive growth.

Types of tourism: religious, adventure, heritage, Important tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh – HPAS Mains

Himachal has various natural and man-made assets namely, the Himalayas, lakes, rivers, snow, rural landscape, pilgrimage spots like temples, gurudwaras and monasteries, heritage structures, traditional dance forms and attires, local handicrafts and cuisine, and some well-established commercial destinations like Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala. These existing assets of Himachal Pradesh shall be considered to create tourism products which revolve around following ten themes for tourism development:

Ecotourism:

All nature-based forms of tourism in which the main motivation of the tourists is the observation and appreciation of nature as well as the traditional cultures prevailing in the natural areas (UNWTO), having minimized negative impacts comes under eco-tourism. The advantages of promoting ecotourism include: benefits to local communities, generation of revenue, support to local economy and preservation of ecosystem and biodiversity. The varied natural landscape, rolling pastures, mighty Himalayas, vast flowing rivers, pristine lakes, dense pine forests and a vivid variety of flora and fauna makes Himachal Pradesh a must visit ecotourism destination. Bird watching, trekking, eco-trails, nature parks, eco-huts, and camping are some tourism products that shall be developed to promote eco-tourism.

Agro/Organic tourism:

Agro/Organic tourism involves any agriculturally based operation or activity that brings visitors to a farm, orchard or ranch. Agro Tourism is undertaken to experience the real rural life, taste the authentic local food and get familiar with the various farming tasks. The State has many organic farms, stone fruit orchards, etc. to offer under Agro Tourism. Development of village infrastructure, organizing cultural shows, providing eco-friendly accommodations amidst farms and orchards, streamlining facilitation procedures at airports, human resource development, creating awareness, improving public participation and facilitation of private sector participation are important points of action for facilitating Agro Tourism in the State.

Snow Tourism:

Himachal Pradesh experiences extreme winters. Despite the harsh dip in temperatures, winter and snow tourism of the region is extremely magnetic, attracting tourists in huge numbers. Activities like snow trekking and camping, skiing, gondola rides, heli-skiing or simply playing in the snow are popular during this time.

Lake Tourism:

Himachal Pradesh houses several natural and man-made lakes like Prashar Lake, Chandra Tal, Deepak Tal, Mani Mahesh Lake, Maharana Pratap Sagar, Gobind SagarLake which offer numerous opportunities. The state is also looking forward to provide access to man-made reservoirs for conducting water sports adventure activities. Apart from this, the fast-flowing rivers of Himachal are popular for activities like river rafting, white water river rafting, angling, etc., and water zorbing, rappelling, and overnight camping along the river banks.

Adventure tourism:

It is a type of niche tourism, involving exploration or travel with a certain degree of risk (real or perceived), or physical danger which may require special skills and physical exertion. Adventure tourism attracts high-value customers who are passionate and risk-taking. It can be leveraged to support the local economy with sustainable practices.

Pilgrimage Tourism:

Pilgrimage tourism can be described as travel undertaken to visit a place, building or a shrine which is sacred. This travel can take place either for observing or participating in religious aspects in accordance with an individual’s trust and faith. These places attract the attention of visitors, not only for religious reasons but also tourists interested in history, architecture or art. Himachal is known, since earliest of times, as “Dev Bhoomi”, which translates to “The Abode of the Gods”. The splendid height of the Himalayan ranges, with its great scenic beauty and aura of spiritual calm makes it the natural home of the Gods. Being a State full of isolated valleys and high ranges, several different styles of temple architecture can be observed, having carved stone shikharas, pagoda style shrines, and temples that look like Buddhist Gompas. The State not only has Hindu temples, but it also houses many Colonial Churches, Sikh Gurudwaras and centuries-old Buddhist Monasteries. Several of them are important places of pilgrimage and each year attract thousands of devotees from all over the country.

Cultural and Heritage Tourism:

This tourism is oriented towards the cultural heritage of the location where tourism is occurring. The National Trust for Historic Preservation in the US defines heritage tourism as “…traveling to experience the places, artifacts and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past, and can include cultural, historic and natural resources”. Cultural tourism is concerned with a traveler’s engagement with a country or region’s culture, specifically the lifestyle of the people in those geographical areas, the history of those people, their art, architecture, religion(s), and other elements that helped shape their way of life. The eco-products like handicrafts, natural produce, cuisines, herbal cosmetics and products, medicines, ethnic ornaments, souvenirs, etc. of Himachal Pradesh are quite popular among travelers. Often villages and rural areas have exclusive products that could be branded. Popularizing the products would lure more travelers to the place, as well as improve the economic condition of the local villagers. The advantages of promoting cultural/eco products are: it helps uplift the backward communities, is less demanding in terms of technological innovations, and finally, acts as a lifeline for dying art form.

Health and Wellness tourism:

Wellness tourism is travel associated with the pursuit or managing or enhancing one’s personal wellbeing through physical, psychological, or spiritual activities. Wellness tourists are proactive in seeking to improve or maintain health and quality of life, often focusing on prevention. However, wellness tourism is often correlated with medical tourism where the traveler is looking for medical aid to get cured mostly through indigenous medicines and therapy.

Himalayas being home to huge collection of medicinal plants and hot springs known for their curative properties provides a stable platform for building health and wellness tourism. Ayurveda spas, wellness centres, Yoga retreats bode well with a scenic and calmative setting of Himachal Pradesh.

Film tourism:

There is a growing interest and demand for locations among travelers which become popular due to their appearance in films and television series. Films, documentaries, TV-productions and commercials inspire people to experience the locations screened in the content and to explore such new destinations. Film tourism is an excellent vehicle for destination marketing and creates opportunities for product and community entrepreneur development. Film field is a fast-paced industry, driven by creative passion, positive energy, and tremendous enthusiasm, which can be cross-pollinated into the tourism and services sector to yield fast results.

MICE tourism:

The MICE market refers to a specialized niche of group tourism dedicated to planning, booking, and facilitating conferences, seminars, and other events; which is a big money-maker in the travel industry. Such events, when hosted, draws plenty of attention to the hosting city or place and benefit the local economies through multiplier effect (travel, accommodation, food, local travel, etc.). Infrastructure created to support such events also helps in the Fast-Track development of these areas and indirectly becomes a platform for showcasing local culture. Meeting Travel hosts a gathering of people coming together in one place, usually a limited number of people, to discuss a subject. Incentive Travel may be one of the harder components of MICE travel to understand since it doesn’t necessarily deal with group events. Instead, incentive travel is typically given to employees as a reward. Incentive travel doesn’t usually have a business or explicit educational component but instead is more of a non-business vacation with the aim of continued motivation for performance. Conference Travel involves organizing itineraries, meetings, and events for people from the same profession or field. Conferences usually have a specific agenda, objectives, and a planned list of activities for the exchange of information. Exhibition Travel: At an exhibition, products or services are displayed and might be the primary focus of the event. Exhibitions are often included in other conferences and meetings, there is often an overlap.
