This is going to be a strange review. For GoGo Penguin, absolutely top marks... Stunning set, brilliantly played with fantastic interplay that brought already superb music to utter life live. Too many bands stick with the sound they achieve in the studio and forget the live experience has to be a fundamentally different beast and as essentially jazz musicians, GGP did not ignore this, with subtle and nuanced variations, particularly in tone. Support was quite different - new singer-songwriter, Daniel Gadd, originally from South Africa. Both were playing in Cambridge for a first time. I hope they return. Why might they not? Aspects of the audience. I've been to gigs for over 35 years and I've never witnessed such rudeness and artistic disrespect, particularly during Daniel's set. If you want to talk, go stand at the bar or outside and leave those of us who have paid to see artists listen to artists not your immature views on life. Worse was the fact this continued during the quieter moments of GGP's set. Four Uni students were the worst and I actually had to leave my place at the front because their need to talk was spoiling my enjoyment of the gig. Sad and perhaps just an arrogant feature of a Cambridge crowd? Possibly - though this was my third Junction gig in a week and the other two were impeccably supported. I hope those involved reflect on this and consider others in the future...

I literally have been waiting years to see GoGo Penguin live. I became a fan when I listened to songs from their v2.0 album, but had to wait for a tour that would bring them closer to Los Angeles. I did have to wait a couple of years, and I had to search for forty minute around Downtown LA for parking but I found it and I saw them. And it was so worth the wait!!!

The band is compromised of 3 members, a pianist, drummer, and cellist. And the just play their music, they don't sing, nor dance, nor do any type of stunt, they just perform, and it is wonderful. They were amazing, the technical skills, instruments, and musicianship was just amazing, I was really wonderstruck by their performance. I invited a friend who doesn't follow jazz, and midway through the show he commented that he was really confused because he didn't know what this was, but it's really good. And pretty much he sums up the experience, because it is not a typical jazz band, or show, but the beauty they create in their art is tangible, just amazing and wonderful and great.

I recommend everyone to see them, it's amazing. Lastly, the best anecdote of the night: there was one really LOUD drunk in the audience, who we kept trying to shush right before he left, he screamed "it's not a fucking library".

The support acts seemed a bit mismatched, but it's also hard to place where GoGo Penguin itself fits in a wider sense. The first act, Sunda Arc, was good electronic music, if a bit safe and sensible. The second, Andreya Triana, was far too simple for my taste.

GoGo Penguin arrived and early on stunned me with their ability to play 'One Percent', which I wouldn't have expected was feasible live. As far as I can tell, most tracks were from their 4th newest album, and 2nd album, with a couple of extras. The set was long and pretty much faultless, the sound was incredible, and the way they played not only stayed true to complex arrangements but built and expanded on them plenty of times to great effect.

I was genuinely concerned for the health of the bassist, whose fingers I can't imagine survived the ordeal. He thrashed his instrument solidly and relentlessly, and presumably for more than one evening...I hope he's doing alright.

Saw the trio at SFJAZZ 9/21 - their last show of four over two nights. The sound was crystal clear and perfectly balanced. It was a very intimate room, with a small, enthusiastic crowd. The trio played a mix of recorded, upcoming, and brand new material - a real treat. The three of them are absolutely amazing musicians, displaying great technique and chops, and together making compelling, thoughtful, driving music with great dynamic range. They use their instruments to their fullest, often using new techniques to cull new sounds, creating a rich sonic tapestry for a piano-bass-drums trio. The only complaint was the show was very short - just an hour set. Still, don't hesitate to see them if you're into nu jazz played expertly and emotionally.

This show was suspende, removed, since a while. Please keep your data base up to date!!

Great. Best gig I've seen all year. Everything that Floating Points could have been but wasn't. Fierce, surprising, funny, playful, brilliant, wild, tight and massively enjoyable.

All three are very talented musicians, with deep technical prowess, but each able to listen, react and swing!

I will see them again as soon as I can.

The koyaanisqatsi show was incredible. Was amazed at what the did with the monumental task of restoring a movie that has a perfect, even legendary score. But they absolutely killed it. Do not miss the chance to see them if you get the chance, especially if it's a koyaanisqatsi show.

I saw the GoGo Penguin show at the Uebel & Gefährlich in Hamburg. The band was great, but the sound was awful. The bass drum was way too loud, almost drowning out the rest of the music (even with earplugs). And I do like loud music, but this was just totally imbalanced. Bummer!

m3mitsuppe’s profile image

It was a really amazing performance. The crowd went wild for the hits from V2.0, and a few new tunes without names went down well. Flawless musicianship, great acoustic, minimal and modest inter-tune chat. See this band at any available opportunity. A+++ would penguin again

It was a great show, I was really enjoyed last night. Pretty melody and visual presentation. Love it! I think I will go for their next gig in London.

Only thing is the guest band is not that interesting for me, and I felt I waited for ages till GoGo Penguin starts.

Emotive, cinematic break-beat trio GoGo Penguin are back, with their brand new album Everything Is Going to Be OK - April 14, 2023. Bursting with the optimism of new beginnings, with a new drummer, a new record label, (Sony Music electronica and neo-classical imprint XXIM Records), and a subtly updated and developed sound, the band are ushering in a more sonically liberated era.

Everything Is Going to Be OK is born from a time of turbulence and loss. During a personally difficult period for the band, including deep personal loss and mourning, the studio offered the band a sanctuary from real life. The resulting project, given such vibrant life here, draws its strength from a shared understanding and empathy. Life has many great aspects to it and despite the lows, we should be mindful and grateful to celebrate the highs at every turn. Through our hardships, together, we will emerge stronger; everything is going to be ok.

GoGo Penguin Announce New Album ‘Everything Is Going to Be OK’

Landing alongside the news of the highly-anticipated forthcoming record is the sublime new single “Glimmerings'' (Listen)

gogo penguin on tour

In the wake of two sold-out shows at London’s iconic KOKO, and a plethora of sold-out tour dates, emotive, cinematic break-beat trio GoGo Penguin are back, with news of their forthcoming new album Everything Is Going to Be OK – set for release April 14, 2023.

With the optimism of new beginnings – a new drummer, a new record label, (Sony Music electronica and neo-classical imprint XXIM Records), and a subtly updated and developed sound, the Mercury Music Prize-nominated band are ushering in a more sonically liberated era. An inimitable trio with a truly captivating and quasi-magical presence, their music is both transformational and ethereal.

Landing alongside the news of the highly-anticipated forthcoming record is the sublime new single “Glimmerings” – the first offering from the forthcoming project and a stellar example of the GoGo Penguin 2.0 era that is beginning. One of the first tracks that was recorded for EIGTBO, “Glimmerings” is exactly as its title suggests – the flickering first moments of something newly created; both literally and metaphorically. Its title was inspired by British Professor Anil Seth’s ‘Being You’ – Nick Blacka explains:

“Glimmerings was one of the first tunes that we began to work on when preparing ideas for a new album. The word glimmerings stood out when I was reading a book by Anil Seth called ‘Being You’. The book is about the science of consciousness and in the Prologue, he talks about how ‘glimmerings of ideas began to emerge’. It felt like the perfect way to describe the process of thought and creativity. Glimmerings started from a small kernel on the synth and over time we added more and more layers until it became something a lot more complex. The idea behind the title is the very beginning, where there is only an idea and an intent to start with, but you have an aim and an idea for where it’s going to take you and you have to trust in the process and yourself to see where that process will lead you” .

Everything Is Going to Be OK was born during a time of turbulence and loss. Recorded in a personally difficult period for the band, which included deep personal loss and mourning, the album studio time offered the band a sanctuary from real life. The resulting project draws its strength from a shared understanding and empathy, with a truly vibrant and hopeful sonic.. Life has many great aspects to it and despite the lows, we should be mindful and grateful to celebrate the highs at every turn. Through our hardships, together, we will emerge stronger; everything is going to be ok.

More on GoGo Penguin:

GoGo Penguin is a piano-trio from Manchester, UK consisting of Chris Illingworth (piano), Nick Blacka (double bass) and Jon Scott (drums). Formed in 2012, the trio’s sophomore album v2.0 was nominated in 2014 for the Mercury Music Prize and in 2016, the trio signed to Blue Note Records, releasing a trio of acclaimed albums: ‘Man Made Object’, ‘A Humdrum Star’ and ‘GoGo Penguin’, as well as two EPS and a remix album ‘GGP/RMX’. They were Blue Note’s best-selling contemporary instrumental artists and sold in excess of 300,000 albums.

The band composes and performs as a unit and the band members refer to their music as “acoustic-electronica”. Their largely (but not exclusively) acoustic music draws on break-beats, classical influences, jazz, minimalist piano melodies, powerful basslines, drums inspired from electronica and anthemic riffs.

When describing GoGo Penguin’s music, critics have frequently drawn reference to Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Massive Attack, Brian Eno and classical composers Shostakovich and Debussy, or even contemporary minimal music composers such as Philip Glass.

GoGo Penguin have toured extensively internationally, performing at International Festivals such as Coachella, Outside Lands, Fuji Rock, Blue Dot, Montreal Jazz Festival, La Vienne, Pukkelpop, North Sea Jazz and many more and have sold-out venues across the world from The Royal Albert Hall to La Cigalle via Paradiso and Bowery Ball Room. In 2015 the trio debuted its own original score for the cult-film ‘Koyaanisqatsi’, performing the show to ecstatic audiences around the world.

GoGo Penguin are becoming an unstoppable force; but are they a jazz band or a rock band? Of course it matters not, they are just a great band and their live shows are brilliant, offering the kind of music that draws in new fans from across the musical spectrum. Between now and the end of the year the trio are on tour throughout Europe, they are in Ireland this week.

The GoGo Penguin tour of the UK in February will coincide with the release of their new Blue Note album, Man Made Object on 5 February. Anyone lucky enough to be at the Love Supreme Festival this summer heard a sneak preview in the Jazz Label’s Lounge and it sounded sensational.

GoGo Penguin filmed live at Union Chapel, in London, in late September 2015.
