Caribbean Cruises from New York City

Your trip to the Caribbean doesn’t need to start with a plane ride to Miami. When you’re located in the Northeast, New York City offers just as much variety, with a choice of luxury and contemporary lines departing from the city’s ports in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Cruise Lines

Multiple cruise lines offer Caribbean itineraries departing New York: • Carnival Cruise Line • Norwegian Cruise Line • Princess Cruises • Crystal Cruises • Cunard Cruises

Keep in mind that trips are limited and spaced throughout the year. Amongst the contemporary lines, Carnival leaves New York from June through October, while Norwegian offers trips in February. Princess, as well, has ships departing from May through July.

Additionally, because of the port’s distance, expect to spend at least two days on the ocean, no matter which cruise line you select.

Itineraries

The typical cruise departing New York lasts seven nights. You’ll have a choice of round-trip and one way itineraries.

Eastern Caribbean: Caribbean cruises leaving New York all present some variation on the Eastern itinerary. On the shorter end, some trips travel down the Atlantic, where they then explore the sights of the Bahamas, known for its European-meets-Caribbean influence in cities like Freeport and Nassau. Then, trips taking this route might head off to Turks and Caicos, an island group not far off the Florida coast.

Others, by contrast, take a longer route, exploring the many islands along the Lesser Antilles. You’ll have the opportunity to see some of the world’s best beaches in St. Thomas. Then, as you travel through Antigua, St. Maarten, and Tortola, your trip takes you through a stunning array of beaches, rainforests, and French, Dutch, and English influences.

I take a lot of cruises to the Caribbean — and there's one upgrade I pay extra for on every single trip

  • I take a lot of cruises in the Caribbean, and I swear by having a room with an ocean-view balcony.
  • In fact, I only book cruises if I could have a room with an ocean-view balcony .
  • The views are amazing and it's a great escape from the crowds for a few hundred extra bucks.

When I was a young adult, I had the opportunity to sail to the Caribbean with friends on a last-minute three-night cruise.

We scored an ocean-view stateroom, which meant we got a small circular window where we could (sort of) see some of the water.

I enjoyed the cruise but vowed not to set sail again until I could book a room with a balcony. Years later, I now exclusively cruise in cabins with ocean-view balconies.

Prices can really vary by ship and time of year, but travelers can usually expect to pay an extra few hundred dollars for a balcony room versus an interior room.

You'll definitely save money on your cruise fare if you don't mind a windowless space in an interior stateroom or an ocean-view window you probably can't open.

But the perks of the ocean-view balcony justify the added cost to my vacation, and having one enhances my cruise experience every time.

Here's why I swear by this basic upgrade — and why you might start doing the same.

A balcony helps me feel less claustrophobic, and it's a great bonus space

If you're like me and kind find yourself feeling a bit trapped or claustrophobic in a room in the middle of the sea, a cabin with a balcony may be your best option.

I love having access to an extension to the outside world without having to leave my private room. It's also a bonus space that benefits everyone in the cabin.

When I need a breather or am trying to stay out of the way while the rest of my group takes turns getting ready in our small cabin, I head to the balcony.

It's an alternative place to hang out at night or an ideal spot to have a cup of coffee when your favorite spot on board is taken.

After all, I never need to worry about my balcony being crowded or closed for cleaning.

There's also no experience as peaceful as sitting on a private balcony during a cruise

When sailing through the Caribbean, those of us with balconies are treated to views of the major named islands and ports of call, as well as small islands scattered throughout the route.

Aside from the visuals, I find sitting out on the balcony to be a relaxing sensory experience — even if it's just for a few minutes at a time throughout the day and night.

When we're closer to shore, I might spot seagulls or an occasional dolphin or sea turtle. I can taste the salt in the air and feel the warm breeze against my skin.

Sure, you could see islands and feel the wind in your hair on the upper decks of the ship, but you avoid the loud crowds in your own private space.

For me, a few hundred bucks is worth the nonstop access to peace.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas has a roundtrip itinerary scheduled to depart Baltimore on April 12, according to the cruise line’s website. “We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” a spokesperson for the line said in an email. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Lavishly celebrating a wedding anniversary is sweet. However, it’s best to not go  overboard .

But couple Alisha and Nate Downey nearly went down with the ship when their luxury liner became entangled in two “traumatizing” thunderstorms .

What was meant to be a lovely $3,294 float to Mexico almost cost the lovebirds their lives.

Alisha and Nate Downey, 31, from Denver, Colorado, on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

“My first cruise was … quite the experience,” Alisha, 31, a mom and dental assistant from Denver, Col., captioned Instagram footage of her rocky Royal Caribbean voyage in January.

Washing up a staggering 28.4 million views, the trending post featured clips of swollen waves crashing against the boat.

The intense impact of the troubled waters caused the ship’s built-in pool to violently slosh, sent glassware and liquor bottles flying off shelves in the bar and dining areas, and made casino slot machines fall on top of passengers, per the viral vid.

Royal Caribbean did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.

Alisha and Nate, 31, a sales manager, set sail for their five-day romantic escape to tropical Costa Maya and Cozumel, leaving from a port in Galveston, Tex., on Jan. 22.

Mid-way through the jaunt, cruise executives reportedly announced that docking in Costa Maya would be “too dangerous.” Instead, the watercraft drifted directly to Cozumel before heading back to the US.

Alisha and Nate Downey, 31, from Denver, Colorado, on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

However, on the way home, a dark cloud upended vacationers’ fun in the sun.

“We could see from our balcony that the overcast was getting worse, water was becoming very choppy, and looking toward the direction we were headed,” Alisha explained to What’sTheJam.

“Very quickly the weather became worse, rain pouring down, the ship rocking,” she recalled. “Around this time is when I believe an announcement was made that we were in a storm and to ‘find sanctuary’.”

Alisha filmed herself and Nate hiding out in their room, which was located on the liner’s eighth floor. However, the pair’s sky-high digs was no match for the mighty ocean.

“Soon our room was taking on water, coming under our balcony door,” she said. “A wine glass slid off the vanity and shattered, all the stuff came falling off.”

Alisha and Nate Downey, 31, from Denver, Colorado, on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

In fear for their lives, the trembling twosome went downstairs to the main deck — only to find broken glass and equally spooked trippers scattered everywhere.

“We even saw women wearing their life jackets coming up the stairs from lower decks…people were scared,” Alisha remembered. “And by that point, there was about three feet of water in our room.”

Harrowing visuals of the chaotic scene elicited sympathy from some online viewers. However, less compassionate folks on the internet scolded Alisha and Nate for taking the watery risk.

“Just don’t take a cruise during hurricane season,” scoffed a cynic.

“Smh they are not all like this. Stop spreading fear,” demanded an equally apathetic commenter.

“I would say the risk you take for booking a cruise??? Like demanding a refund because it rained on your beach vacation??,” another outraged critic ranted. “Maybe they should refund you. Then just not pay any of their staff that worked the cruise and kept you safe so you can get your refund for your inconvenience?”

Alisha and Nate Downey, 31, from Denver, Colorado, on a Royal Caribbean cruise.

Alisha clapped back at the shade.

“[I] Never demanded a refund, to be clear. I respectfully requested a small credit or voucher toward another cruise,” she explained in her Instagram comments.

The incensed traveler, too noted that her cruise wasn’t during hurricane season — which, in Mexico, spans from June through November.

“Our room flooded as did many. We paid for unlimited drinks to which bars closed for a while. We were supposed to stop at two places…one of which was skipped,” confined the blond. “And whilst one captain on another cruise line redirected for safety our captain went through not one but TWO dangerous storms.”

“People got hurt.”

Rather than a refund, Alisha said Royal Caribbean offered her 20% on her next cruise.

However, while she and her hubby may not be in a hurry to board another tub any time soon, other sea lovers have become completely addicted to the motion of the ocean.

Influencers across the globe have infamously ditched dry to hop onboard the Ultimate World Cruise , a nine-month Royal Caribbean cruise that launched in December.

And newlyweds Monica Brzoska Jorell Conley recently quit their jobs and hawked all their worldly possessions to become permanent mariners .

“All my meals are cooked by chefs and staff change my bedding,” said Brzoska, 32. “I haven’t stepped into a kitchen or used a washing machine for a year.”

“I’m not a millionaire,” she teased, “I just live full-time on cruise ships.”

US travel alert: Popular cruise line stops visits to its Caribbean resort

This photo provided by Royal Caribbean shows Surfside on Icon of the Seas, featuring the Water’s Edge pool with ocean views.

A popular cruise line has stopped visiting a private Caribbean resort due to concerns about violence and unrest in the area.

AL.com reports Royal Caribbean has suspended calls at Labadee, its resort on the northern coast of Haiti, after the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert urging tourists not to visit the country. Haiti is at a Level Four travel advisory, alongside countries such as Russia, Syria and Burkina Faso.

“Due to the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we’re temporally suspending our visits to Labadee for our entire fleet,” the company said in a statement. “We continue to monitor and assess the situation with our Global Security & Intelligence Team.”

According to the RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com, Royal Caribbean has extended its itinerary change through at least mid-April. The cruise line will instead visit Perfect Day at CocoCay instead of Labadee, Haiti.

“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change – your safety is our top priority,” Royal Caribbean International’s Assistant Vice President of Guest Experiences wrote to guests sailing on the April 14 sailing of Explorer of the Seas, according to the blog.

The company said none of its passengers or crew have faced violence or threats.

According to the Associated Press, a do-not-travel alert was issued for Haiti in July 2023 after U.S. officials raised concerns about for “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and poor health care infrastructure.” Later that month, the U.S. ordered all family members of U.S. government employees and non-emergency personnel to leave the country. American government personnel have been limited to only confined areas around the Embassy and are not allowed to walk in Port-au-Prince, use any public transportation, visit banks or ATMs, drive at night or travel between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic sharing the island to the east. According to AL.com, the Dominican Republic is under a level 2 advisory with visitors urged to exercise increased caution.

Carnival Cruise Line temporarily moving Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Va. after bridge collapse

The next seven-day Carnival Legend trip scheduled for March 31 will operate out of Norfolk.

BALTIMORE -- Carnival Cruise Line said Tuesday that it is temporarily moving its Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Virginia following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Carnival Legend is scheduled to return from its current voyage on Sunday, March 31. Officials said guests will return to Norfolk on Sunday and be bussed back to Baltimore.

Officials say guests are being informed of this change.

Royal Caribbean International's Vision of the Seas is set to return to Baltimore on April 4, however, no official changes have been made.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted. We are closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas' ongoing and upcoming sailings," said a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean.

A cargo ship crashed into the bridge early Tuesday morning, causing a near-total collapse of the span and halting vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore.

Six people were missing and presumed dead, and the search for them was suspended, Coast Guard officials announced Tuesday night.

Rescuers pulled two people out of the water. One person was treated at a hospital and discharged hours later.

"Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore," said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.

Could ships be rerouted to New Jersey ports following Baltimore Key Bridge collapse?

In the wake of a devastating bridge collapse in Baltimore, shipping routes for cargo and cruise ships may undergo significant alterations, potentially rerouting vessels to ports in New Jersey.

Port Director of Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Beth Rooney said her organization offered assistance and resources.

“The Port Authority is in touch with our counterparts in Baltimore, and we stand ready to assist with emergency resources and any other assistance that may be needed,” she said. “The Port of New York and New Jersey is proactively working with our industry partners to respond as needed and ensure supply chain continuity along the East Coast.”

At about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a vessel leaving the Port of Baltimore struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge. A video shows the ship hitting one of the bridge's columns before part of the bridge fell onto the ship and then fully collapsed into the Patapsco River.

As of Tuesday afternoon, a massive search was underway as multiple vehicles along with contractors repairing potholes were on the bridge at the time of its collapse, as reported by USA TODAY .

Data from ship tracking and maritime analytics provider MarineTraffic shows that on the day of the crash, 29 ships were expected to arrive at the port within 24 hours and 14 more were expected in the coming days.

Two people were rescued during the initial hours of the search.

The mayor of Baltimore, Brandon M. Scott, issued an executive order Tuesday morning declaring a state of emergency for the city. It is set to remain in place for 30 days.

"The Executive Order mobilizes the City of Baltimore's Emergency Operations Plan to deploy emergency resources to protect the persons affected by the incident and expands the resources available to tackle the emergency situation," the press release stated.

The Port of Baltimore announced that vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore will be suspended until further notice.

Between cargo ships and cruise ships, numerous vessels sail in and out of the port each day. In the wake of this tragedy, where will they all go?

Major ports nearby

The Port of New Jersey and New York is the largest port on the East Coast and a relatively short trip from the Port of Baltimore, making it a viable option for rerouting.

Other major ports along the East Coast that could see rerouted ships include:

  • Port of Savannah
  • Port of Charleston
  • Port of Virginia
  • Port of Miami
  • Port of Boston

Cruise ships

Three major cruise lines run voyages in and out of the Port of Baltimore: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian, all using the port for Caribbean, Canadian and other Atlantic destinations.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said the company is working on alternatives for its ships.

"Our Port Logistics team is currently working on alternatives for our ongoing and upcoming sailings. We will message our guests and travel partners directly once our plans are finalized."

Royal Caribbean's, Vision of the Seas is on a 12-night Southern Caribbean sailing that is not due back into port until April 4.
