The Travellers Rest

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

The Traveller’s Rest has great views over the valley and the outside seating area must be wonderful in the summer. We called in early on a Saturday evening and found a table with no problems, but it was pretty full by the time we left.... I had gammon and egg - a generous, well-cooked slice of gammon. The egg was slightly over cooked but the mushrooms were lovely. The chips were tasty and there were too many for my appetite. My wife had an excellent steak and cheese sandwich. It was good to be asked how she wanted her steak cooked. We shared a Lotus Biscoff dessert - tasty but didn’t quite have the wow factor. It seemed to take a long time for the dessert to arrive. I was pleased to see Heineken 0 on draught and total bill was £35 More

Called for lunch here and was very happy with the food and service. Food was served hot and menu had a great choice. COVID measures not as good as I have seen and waiters did not wear masks. All in all a nice experience and... will be going again. More

Ate here last night, lovely warm welcome with efficient and friendly staff. Food was nice and arrived quickly. We’d booked but it wasn’t overly busy although it may have been earlier. We’ll definitely go again

I wouldn’t usually write a bad review unless i absolutely felt the need to do so, especially under our current circumstances. Me and my brother visited the Travellers rest yesterday after struggling to get a reservation elsewhere. It has been a good few years since... we had been and the reviews didn’t seem so bad so we booked a table for 7 the staff member on the phone was really nice who we came to meet when we arrived she was very welcoming and was very accommodating, especially with my terrible 2 year old that took a minute to settle. I ordered food for my daughter and we ordered drinks. The Fish and chips came which were swimming in oil with no care to the presentation it was just thrown on the plate, i had to ask 3 times for a spoon for the peas which came when the meal was nearly finished and cold. My drink then came in a dirty glass which i returned for a clean glass. My brother then ordered wings and chips his wings came and the chips 10 mins later, in which i then was told my food was nearly ready (we asked for the meal to come all together as there was a starter but this should really go with out saying) my brother didn’t eat most of his food saying it was not very nice and cold. My food turned up 20 mins after my brothers. I had to then wait a further 7 minutes for the sauce. The chips were cold, the steak was swimming in oil when i asked who I believe to be the manager/landlady to please take it away and explained why i didn’t see it as been edible. She said ‘well ill take it off the bill’ with such an awful bad attitude! I then said its not the money i have come to enjoy food but will leave not eating as the steak tastes like it has been cooked in an old oil which the plate was drenched with. She then gave me a nasty comment ‘well it hasn’t and stormed off. No apology just pure attitude. There was no care put in the to the food what so ever. You could clearly see they were struggling and were servilely understaffed. I did give the girl who served us a tip as she had tried to do her best under the circumstances especially working under such dreadful and awful management. More

Group of 6 precooked for Sunday lunch . Excellent meal great value ! Service superb . We really enjoyed our meal and the staff could not do enough to help meet the diverse needs - one coeliac and one vegetarian!

Very friendly staff, beer on top form & great food. Busy Thursday night but managed to get a table. Unusually, a member of staff comes to your table to take food orders, up to speed with what was available & what was not from a... good range on the menu. Opted for the steak & mushroom pie which came with chunky chips & peas/beans. Rich gravy finished it nicely. The Salmon also came with chips & veg, this time in a rich sauce. Both were lovely. Timothy Taylor’s Landlord was very good despite hearing shortly after that the barrel had run off. Rose wine was chilled without being too cold. Thanks to the staff, very friendly and pleasant man in particular. More

My wife and I have visited this restaurant several times in the last few weeks, both at lunchtime and in the evening. We have dined as a couple, but we have also brought family and friends. Dogs are welcome at the tables near the bar... but not in the main part of the restaurant. Staff are especially friendly and helpful. More

My wife and I had a Fabulous 3course meal I had prawn salad my wife had garlic mushrooms with Stilton cheese Main course I had roast beef with vegetables and a roast potato with mash and Yorkshire pudding My wife had Turkey with vegetables and... a roast potato and Yorkshire pudding All with beautiful Gravy. Then I had Treacle sponge and custard My wife had chocolate fudge cake with cream and ice cream. I must say it was very nice indeed. My wife and I will most definitely be going back. More

Thank you for your review & we look forward to seeing you again soon.

We had a belated family celebration to welcome our son and his wife back from New Zealand after not being able to attend their wedding in February due to travel restrictions. Jan and her team were amazing from start to finish. Lovely outdoor space and... brilliant buffet. More

Thank you for your comments, they are very much appreciated & make all our efforts worth while. So pleased that everyone enjoyed the day & even the sun shone! We look forward to seeing you again soon. Thanks again

This is the slowest place i have been in my life it is worse than pizza hut survice and thats saying something how can you be slower than pizza hut it like impossible but some how this place manages to do it. Ps nice atmosphere... and pretty lighting. Would recommend if you like waiting in pretty places for food that will take hours to come. More

We usually visit on a Sunday with the dogs. We enjoy the food which is reasonably priced and friendly service. Sometimes abit of a wait on food but understandably as Sundays can be busy. Well kept, clean and updated inside, nice outside area and lovely... country surroundings. We continue to return as happy customers :) More

We were staying at an Airbnb down the road. This was the closest place. We had a tasty meal that was reasonably priced. The best part was the warm and friendly staff. From booking on the phone to every interaction, they were so friendly. It... felt like a 'local' and yet as outsiders we were welcome. It would be great to sit outside - if not for the rain! More

We visited on a Saturday lunchtime to celebrate my mums 90th. There were 19 of us and the service was excellent. Food served in a timely fashion and everyone enjoyed what they had. We were allowed to use the upper dining area which we decorated.... A big thank you to our waitress who took it all in her stride. Always very accommodating. The value is tremendous. Thank you again! More

This is by far my favourite restaurant at the minute. The staff are extremely friendly the place is very clean and well presented, the garlic mushrooms are just out of this world, and the moretti is probably one of the best i have had since... the ease of lockdown.. I would definitely recommend this place. All covid rules are in place which makes you feel extremely safe.. excellent 👌 More

Popped in yesterday with my wife and kids (early evening). It was the first day of the “Eat out to help out” offer. The place was busy and there was a delay with food. However it arrived and was hot, fresh and of the usual... excellent quality... Well done The Travellers Rest.. More

Great place really lovely atmosphere plenty of space for activities the garden was very well maintained I thought i was in the garden of Eden. There is many lavender plants so if you had sex in this place this is ideal to wash your dick with and go back home to the wife and she wouldn't suspect a thing

Imaginative twist on Sunday lunch impresses across all courses

It's the meal of the weekend where the shackles of calorie counts are thrown off in a bid to soak up hangovers and fill a few hours with the family.

Yes, Sunday Lunch is certainly something to look forward to for most of us.

So when it comes to eating out on the ‘day of rest’ you don’t want to take any chances.

With only two other pubs within walking distance, one might fear the Traveller’s Rest in the semi-rural village of Upper Hopton above Mirfield to have become complacent.

Thankfully that’s very far from the truth.

While it’s not likely to win a Michelin star with its hearty pub grub, the resident chef is clearly an adventurous and creative cook who hasn’t lost sight of tradition.

What can easily be a dry and tasteless choice, a bog standard chicken dinner, arrived with piles of succulent white meat, expertly seasoned and crisped up roasties, a decent Yorkshire pudding, and a new one to me, leek and bacon mash with an individual jug of nicely spiced piping hot gravy – always a nice touch.

The imaginative approach continued for the container of the rudimentary root vegetables as my steamed broccoli and cauliflower arrived in mini-colander instead of a bowl.

I appreciated the presentation but it would have been nice to have something a touch more exotic such as roasted carrots, mange tout or perhaps a cheesy leek bake or cauliflower cheese.

The other half’s steak and chips were a surprise, an impressive stack of red meat and carbs, akin to a major construction project.

The perfectly cooked sirloin came balanced on top of the thickest chips any of us had ever seen and a large flat mushroom to boot.

Pan fried asparagus criss-crossed and a grilled tomato completed the towering meal.

Personally I’m wary about ordering steak in a non-specialist restaurant as they can easily be over-cooked, tough, and to be frank, tasteless. With it’s £17.95 price tag, this was a gamble too far for me.

Thankfully the ‘other half’ has no such qualms about splashing out and we were delighted to find the medium cooked cut of meat was the best we’ve tasted in a long, long, long time.

The chips too, were up there in the upper echelons of potatoes I’ve ever eaten.

The effort put in to arranging our third diner’s main course, fillet of pork, also grabbed our attention, prompting us to pull out our mobile phones to snap a quick pic.

Three medallions of juicy fillet wrapped in bacon, nestled on a bed of mash with a rich reduction made an extra special impression.

Having opted for no starters, desserts had to be tried, and again what arrived exceeded our expectations, at least in terms of artistic approach.

An apple and blackcurrant “strudel” with “proper” custard sprang out at me on the menu.

Unfortunately the chef had run out of his custard and I was asked if cream would do.

I reluctantly agreed.

My anxiety over my decision was compounded when the “strudel” arrived looking nothing like a strudel.

What is normally a puff pastry dominated pudding had been modified to four small discs stacked with a warm fruit compote.

A scoop of ice-cream with apple crisps spiked in was perfectly nice but my disappointment was palpable.

Ten out of ten for presentation but in this situation I think I’m a traditionalist.

The other dessert ordered, a rhubarb and cinnamon apple crumble, was also divisive, arriving in the very individual pot it was baked in.

Clearly homemade, the crumble was well, crumbly, and I imagine the rhubarb was from the famous triangle just down the road near Wakefield.

My mother dubbed it “imaginative and fun” but I felt cinnamon and rhubarb was a combination that didn’t quite work.

But let’s not end on a sour note, although ironically, I did feel the dish needed more sugar.

travellers rest upper hopton menu

Simply put – we were very impressed with the effort the kitchen team had made to make the food they produced stand out from the stuff that most pubs are churning out.

Service was a little slow with us waiting almost an hour for our dinners. But I’d happily trade an extra 10 or 15 minutes of waiting for a higher quality dish.

My sentiments were clearly shared by locals who had packed the place out.

Price wise, it’s not the cheapest, but it’s by no means the most expensive pub lunch in WF14, with roast dinners priced at £9.99 and puddings £3.95 a piece.

All-in-all we walked away for a stroll on the nearby River Calder most satisfied with our lot.
