Additional Info

What to Bring : Flat shoes, light jacket and camera Note : This is an adults only cruise minimum age 13 years. Sailaway vessels are luxury sailing catamarans and offer a pure sailing experience. This means the vessels travel in open seas and will move around whilst under sail. The decks of the vessels are multi levels and can be slippery when wet. Passengers must have good mobility to safely move around the vessels, step onto the glass bottom boats and get in and out of the water via the ladders on the back of the vessels. Our tours are not suitable for older guests with mobility issues. Unfortunately, we do not offer wheelchair access due to the layout of the decks and saloon areas. To participate in the activity of snorkelling, you must be confident in the water with the capacity to swim unassisted. If you are a poor swimmer, you may not be suitable to snorkel in the open water. Not all passengers will be suitable to snorkel, and our experienced crew have the discretion to advise against snorkelling if deemed "not suitable for the activity". This is for the safety of the passenger. Operated by : Sailaway Reef & Island Tours

The best Sunset Cruise I ever... - Sailaway

  • Port Douglas - Things to Do

The best Sunset Cruise I ever experienced

My boyfriend and I traveled to Port Douglas for a Holiday. We have done sunset cruises in the past, but by far this was the absolute best sunset cruise we have ever experienced. The crew was extremely warming and welcoming. They were so hospitable. They truly made the sunset a marvelous experience. It is a must do if traveling to Port Douglas.

We had a wonderful day out to Low Isles with Sailaway. An hours trip out, several hours on the Island with some of the best snorkelling I have ever enjoyed, lunch on board was very nice and a couple more hours snorkelling off the boat. The coral and fish life was lovely and we also saw a turtle though others saw more than the one. The real treat was on the home trip where we came upon a pod of dolphins jumping out of the water and tail slapping. There was a mother and baby - very little with a pink belly and it jumped out as well. Fabulous, fabulous day. Thank you to the Sailaway crew.

My partner and I went for the Sailaway sunset cruise before dinner on our last night in Port Douglas. I can't think of a better way we could've ended the week. The staff were very fun and friendly and the boat is amazing (I really want one). The mood on the boat is more like a trip out on a (rich) friends boat than a tourist trip as the number of guests is quite low and it's all nicely informal. You get your choice of a free drink when you board and then find a nice spot to chill and watch the views. A friendly young lady then welcomes everyone and wanders around making sure you have a drink, chatting and taking photos for you if you like. It's all extremely pleasant. We got back in time for dinner at Nautilus and it was really a perfect night. I would definitely book with Sailaway again next time I'm in Port Douglas.

Sailaway is a lovely reef experience. The crew were exceedingly friendly. The sailboat was a nice size. The low isle reef had beautiful corals. A great pick for a pleasant day on the reef.

Brilliant. Free stinger suits, free snorkelling with guide, prawns for lunch, muffins for morning tea and a small group. Saw 8 turtles, swam alongside 5, swam with giant trevally and reef sharks. Amazing experience. Sailaway really looked after us. Best day at Port Douglas for sure.

Sailaway was recommended by a tour agent as my partner had tried snorkelling before and not really got the hang of it. Sailaway only takes maximum 33 people on board so we knew we would not be competing for space with other people. In addition, this also allowed for a personalised day in which the staff took the time to have a chat and generally look after you. After a beautiful an short journey to the Low Isles, we were given a run down of the day and some historical facts about Low Island. We took a glass bottom boat to the island and then embarked on a snorkelling tour over the reef. There were 2 groups - one catering for those not so confident. We saw so many turtles! It was amazing. Lunch was delicious. We then got the chance to swim with some reef sharks hanging around the boat before sailing back to the marina. Overall, a wonderful experience! Thanks to Jess, Glen (on his last day of working there) and Alex.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

sailaway sunset cruise

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

sailaway sunset cruise

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

sailaway sunset cruise

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

sailaway sunset cruise

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

sailaway sunset cruise

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

sailaway sunset cruise

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

sailaway sunset cruise

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
