The Brothers Brick

World's no. 1 source for lego news, reviews, and fan creations., lego icons 40579 – eiffel’s apartment: a towering gift with purchase [review].

The massive Icons 10307 Eiffel Tower will be arriving on November 25th – and LEGO has a gift with purchase promotion that is tied about as tightly to the French landmark as you can get. Gustave Eiffel’s private apartment, hidden on the third level of the tower, has been re-created in minifigure scale for Icons 40579 Eiffel’s Apartment . We’re still waiting on the official word, but our guess is it is linked to the purchase of the 10307 Eiffel Tower so getting this “booster box” of 228 pieces carries an indirect price of US $629.99 | CAN $799.99 | UK £554.99 . Does this set make the overall tower more appealing? Come along as we take an early look!

The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews.

Unboxing the parts, instructions and sticker sheet

Eiffel’s apartment comes in a small tab-sealed box with adult-collector style theming. That means a black background, minimal logos, and a greeble strip along the bottom edge. It also means a mandated age rating of “18+”.  As usual, that value is pretty much meaningless as a much younger builder could easily handle this set.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The sticker sheet in our review copy came balled up around the parts bags, arriving in less than pristine condition. Leaving it to sit under a heavy book for a while helped smooth out the worst bends, and luckily there weren’t any actual creases to deal with. All of the stickers are recreations of the apartment’s vintage 1880’s wallpaper. It’s unsurprising that LEGO would opt for stickers rather than a large batch of more-or-less single-use prints, even if I could have seen these showing up in a City Modular building at some future point.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The build for the apartment is pretty straightforward, consisting of mostly studs-up brick and plate stacking. There is a nice technique at the very center, though, where a small 2×2 turntable is used to rotate the stud orientation 45 degrees, locked in place by the corner plate below it.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The walls of the apartment sport some intricate sticker work. There’s very little repetition here, and I can imagine that the sticker sheet will be one of the most in-demand aftermarket pieces from this set. (Particularly as there are no unique parts to be had elsewhere.)

appartement tour eiffel lego

Assembled, the gaps around the edges of the stickers wreck the illusion of wallpaper a bit. One tip I’d pass along – don’t put the stickers on the wedge-shaped pieces until the wall is assembled. You’ll have a better chance of aligning the trim designs across bricks.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The center of the room is dominated by a large beam from the tower structure. This sub-build attaches to the floor via the yellow clips on that 2×2 turntable I mentioned earlier. The connection is pretty firm, and the beam will survive the jostling it’ll endure as the other apartment furnishings go in.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The interior gets some set dressing with a wooden desk, chair, and table. The desk has a small lamp and a 1×2 tile with a printed envelope pattern. In a bit of meta reclusiveness, there’s also a small model of the Eiffel Tower itself perched on a small display table.

appartement tour eiffel lego

As micro-scale renditions of the Eiffel tower go, it’s not bad. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention a couple of issues, though. The main flaw is that the tower is floating above the table top – the 1×1 transparent brick used to hold it up is 1/3rd of a plate too tall. I’m also not sold on the use of pistols for the lower level’s legs – it’s creative, but the shaping feels off to me. It’ll be interesting to see if any LEGO fans share an alternate design to swap out with this one.

Or maybe this is just a concept of the Eiffel Rocket, caught mid-launch.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The outside of the apartment has some necessary-feeling railings and a couple of telescopes. I wasn’t able to find anything to indicate how true-to-life these details are, but they seem pretty reasonable.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The finished model

As seen on the box, Gustave fits well into his apartment. There’s not a lot of room for him to move around, but this is clearly meant to be a display piece and not a playset.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Comparing the completed model to a photo of the actual apartment, you can see that LEGO was able to match the look pretty well. The only choice that seems very off is the decision to make the beam dark grey instead of brown as seen here. The wallpaper design isn’t an exact match to the stickers either, but it’s close enough to feel representative.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Actually, the color of the outside is wrong, too. Since 1968 the entire tower has been painted in what’s called “Eiffel Tower Brown”. In fact, it’s never been grey ! I get why LEGO has needed to opt for grey elements, but it does downgrade the accuracy of every model a fair bit. I suppose having the interior support strut be grey matches the choice of the overall tower coloration. If you want to be generous about it.

There’s just enough room for a minifigure to stand behind the telescopes and put them to use. Considering the apartment is almost 1000 feet in the air already, it must allow for quite the view of the Paris cityscape.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The minifigure

This set contains a single minifigure – Gustave Eiffel himself. Sadly, there’s nothing unique about Gustave. His torso has been seen once before as part of Cedric Diggory’s outfit in  75948 Hogwarts Clock Tower and his face has had 8 previous appearances, often used for Ben Kenobi . His grey hair has shown up four times, including as part of Vernon Dursley in 75968 4 Privet Drive . His legs are plain black, so nothing special there at all.  Rarity aside, though, this is a unique combination of parts, and the likeness to Gustave is pretty close to the mannequin on display in the real apartment.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Conclusion and recommendation

Eiffel’s Apartment is an interesting way for LEGO to expand the 10307 Eiffel Tower without directly ratcheting up the already high price and part count of that set. It recreates a minifigure-scale view of a part of the tower and considering the almost urban-legend quality of the hidden apartment, it’s also a conversation piece. The build itself is interesting, if not particularly complex. The included minifigure is a good likeness for Gustave Eiffel, although it doesn’t contain any unique elements.

Is this set worth getting? Well, if you’re already purchasing the 10307 Eiffel Tower set, then that’s an obvious “yes”. Will this set have any appeal for those who don’t want the larger offering? That’s a tougher call. For Eiffel fans on a budget, it might be tempting, but I can’t see too many casual LEGO fans seeking this one out. There are no unique elements aside from the sticker sheet, and the parts in general are all fairly common. Depending on the quantity produced, and how long the promotion lasts, you might consider socking your copy away if you’re not interested in finding even more display space for Eiffel constructions. You might be able to (eventually) make someone’s day who wasn’t able to escape the $630 US price the second the larger set hit the shelves.

Review: #40579 Eiffel’s Apartment (and first look at #10307 Eiffel Tower)

Whether you want to learn about this gift-with-purchase set or you just want a sneak peek at building the gigantic Eiffel Tower set, we’ve got you covered!

appartement tour eiffel lego

#40579 Eiffel’s Apartment is a small model that will be distributed as a gift-with-purchase, designed to complement the release of the massive #10307 Eiffel Tower set. On the one hand, it makes perfect sense — complement a massive architecturally focused set with a tiny story that inexorably linked with its creation. On the other hand, it is a very small model with a cramped composition, and I’m not sure that will have broad appeal.

#40579 Eiffel’s Apartment - Box front and back.

#40579 Eiffel’s Apartment – Box front and back.

#40579 Eiffel’s Apartment will be available as a gift-with-purchase at LEGO stores starting November XXX. The minimum purchase to receive the set will likely be $19.99 based on previous GWP sets of this size. . It contains just 228 pieces and is marked for ages 18+ despite the small size and (seemingly) simple construction techniques. It is one of the smallest and simplest sets with the 18+ / Adults Welcome packaging.

First Impressions

I had heard that Eiffel’s Apartment would be the subject for a gift with purchase this fall but did not put much thought into it. That’s because the larger Eiffel Tower set had captured my imagination instead. I felt like any set designed to complement a massive architectural model in the style of the Creator Expert series would be dwarfed by its larger sibling. While doubtful due to differences in scale, I thought it would be cool if the gift-with-purchase set could replace a module in the larger model, adding an interior to a section of the larger model.

Box Impressions:

When the box arrived, my limited enthusiasm waned further because the composition of the vignette is very awkward. The front of the box shows a tiny room with massive metal beams jutting awkwardly upward, a rough brick-built model of the finished building on the left, and a small desk on the right. Standing out even more is the garish wallpaper, which you can easily see is achieved using stickers. (I hate stickers.) The Minifigure of Gustave Eiffel looks nice, with a formal suit, gray hair and a pensive smile.

The back of the box shows a small balcony on two sides with a pair of telescopes that Gustave might have used to look at famous landmarks around the city. Overall, it looks like an awkward homage to a person whose main claim to fame is the building itself.

The box is pretty small, and features the 18+ / ‘Adults Welcome’ branding along the bottom edge — this time in 199 Dark Stone Grey Dark Bluish Gray .

  • Box Size: 26.0 x 13.9 x 6.0cm (10 1/4” × 5 1/2” × 2 3/8”)
  • Box Weight: 347 grams (0.77 lbs)
  • Box Density: 347 grams / 2.17 Liters = 160 g/L
  • LEGO Parts Weight: 221.7 g (0.49 lbs)
  • Weight-per-piece: 221.7 grams / 228 pieces = 0.97 g/piece.
  • Price per piece: $19.99 (nominal) / 228 pieces = $0.088 per piece.
  • Price per gram: $19.99 (nominal) / 221.7 g = $0.090 per gram.

While the set can not be purchased separately, it will likely have a $19.99 price inside the LEGO database, which means that you will have to “pay” that amount if you return the set which you bought to earn the GWP. I’ve calculated the Price-per-piece/gram based on this price.

The box contains three bags of parts, but they are not numbered like in larger sets.

The box contains three bags of parts, but they are not numbered like in larger sets.

My set was marked with box code 3302 . This code indicates where and when the set was manufactured – in this case it was packaged on 33 rd week of 202 2 in Billund, Denmark (Factory code ‘ O ’). As such, this set was packed around August 18, 2022.

The fact that the set appears to have been packed in Billund is interesting — The LEGO Group have very little packing equipment still in Billund, with most of their european packaging coming out of Kladno, Czech Republic. (As we recently learned from Rambling Brick, Kladno is the first factory to shift from plastic to paper bags inside the box.)

I strongly suspect that this set was not produced in large quantities. I would not be surprised to learn that even those copies sold in North America will be packaged in Billund as well (but with slightly different packaging that includes just English, Spanish, and French.)

Box contents:

  • 1x large unmarked bag.
  • 1x medium unmarked bag.
  • 1x small unmarked bag.
  • Sticker sheet (marked 10100592/6407373).
  • 60-page instruction booklet. 19.5 x 12.5 cm (7 3/4 x 4 7/8”).

Build Process

At just 228 pieces for this set, the larger set that inspired this GWP contains about 44 times as many parts. If there’s any hope that I will be able to build the larger model in a reasonable amount of time, I need to warm up by completing this tiny model in 30 minutes or less!

Given the small number of pieces, I wasn’t all that surprised to see no numbered bags for this set – just like in the 1980’s, you get to dump out all the parts at once!

The build process begins by building a solid base that has two layers of plates sandwiching a layer of bricks. This uses a lot of “angle” bricks with 45(deg) angle since the base is not rectangular. Also notable are the clips installed at a 45deg angle using a 2×2 turntable.

The strong base is built at an angle.

The strong base is built at an angle.

Afterwards, we build the walls, which go quickly if you skip the stickers as I did. (It would have taken a lot longer if you added all twelve of the garish wallpaper stickers.) After that, we build a SNOT assembly with bar connection on one end which creates the diagonal support which goes through the middle of the room.

Assembling the interior furniture.

Assembling the interior furniture.

From there, we build a selection of interior furnishing, including a table on the left with a microscale Eiffel Tower model. I do not find it to be a particularly convincing rendition unfortunately, and I’m not a fan of the decision to support it using a transparent element. We also have a small desk and chair, and a dresser with a plant on it.

Exterior railing and telescopes.

Exterior railing and telescopes.

Finally, we turn the model around a build a simple railing and two telescopes on stands. It doesn’t add a lot to the model when displayed on a shelf, but it does give a bit more context into how this apartment would have related to the building as a whole.

Build time: 20 minutes (without stickers).

I am slightly disappointed by this set, even though it is a “free” GWP set. It is similar in scope and size to the #40531 Lars Family Homestead Kitchen promotion earlier this year, which had even fewer parts, but looks better on a shelf. It’s also worth noting that set ended up with a high resale value because of the unique Aunt Beru minifigure… there are a lot of Star Wars collectors out there!

The model looks a little better when viewed from the front.

The model looks a little better when viewed from the front.

I’m not a fan of stickers, and a lot of them are employed to create wallpaper on the interior. Most of all, it is an awkward composition, which does not look good from any angle.

#40579 Eiffel’s Apartment

#40579 Eiffel’s Apartment

I’m also disappointed that neither the instruction booklet or box explains what this model is about – no context into where the apartment is located in the Eiffel Tower, or historical information explaining why it exists in the first place. I was motivated to do some of my own research into this tiny apartment on my own, but this felt like a missed opportunity. Ultimately, it struggles to capture my attention, resulting in a middling Acceptable (2/5 star) rating.

Bonus: First Look at #10307 Eiffel Tower

I just received the massive Eiffel Tower set on Monday, which is why I wasn’t able to publish my full review yet. Nonetheless, it is one of the most exciting releases this year and I wanted to share a sneak peek at the set!

#10307 Eiffel Tower comes in a massive box!

#10307 Eiffel Tower comes in a massive box!

The box alone is gigantic and heavy, matching if not exceeeding the size of the previous largest LEGO set box — #75192 Millennium Falcon . (For the final review, I am hoping to do a side-by-side comparison of the two boxes.)

Inside the box you will find three smaller boxes. Given the immense size of the big box, these three smaller boxes are quite large as well – Each one is approximately the same size as the #31203 World Map set (which still holds the record for the most pieces in a LEGO set, not to be confused for the largest LEGO set).

Each of the three smaller boxes focus on one 'layer' of the build process.

Each of the three smaller boxes focus on one ‘layer’ of the build process.

On the front of those three boxes, you can see which part of the model it will build, with the first box only assembpling the base itself, the second box taking us up to the lower observation deck, and the final box finishing the mode.

Build Process – Box 1

I have only had time to complete the first box, but I’ve decided to include the build process for that box as a teaser for my final review. If you would prefer not to see ‘spoilers’ about the set, I suggest your jump down to the Initial Thoughts section below.

As indicated on the front of the smaller box, we begin the project by just building the base and the foliage. It looks like we will need to wait until the second box to actually start building the Eiffel Tower itself. This feels like a big investment in just the foundation, but we saw something similar with the Colosseum model.

The first box includes several loose parts and unmarked bags, plus numbered bags for the first 18 stages of the build.

Bags 1–10: Base

Before we lay a single brick, I was pleased to see several pages of information about the history of the Eiffel Tower, as well as a page about the design process for this set, featuring a great photo of LEGO Designer Rok Zgalin Kobe.

Instruction booklet includes background info on the building itself, and the LEGO set designer.

Instruction booklet includes background info on the building itself, and the LEGO set designer.

While I love having this background information, I was surprised to see that it is only in English — also including French would have been a respectful design choice given where the building is located!

How do you start building one of the largest LEGO sets ever created? By combining Bag #1 and #2 of course!

How do you start building one of the largest LEGO sets ever created? By combining Bag #1 and #2 of course!

As we move to the actual building instructions, we see something that I’ve never experienced before – the instructions ask us to dump out both Bag #1 and #2 at the same time. I suspect that they decided to use a unique number for each bag (instead of multiple bags with the same number) to help with inventory management.

A Technic substructure with corner bracing should result in a no-nonsense, super strong base.

A Technic substructure with corner bracing should result in a no-nonsense, super strong base.

Right from the beginning of bags 1+2 , we are building four identical modules. I am extremely pleased to see a mix of LEGO Plates and Technic components that I’m confident will be very strong once completed. In particular, we see two 5×5 Technic corner elements (part 32555) strengthening the model.

Progress at the end of Bags 1+2.

Progress at the end of Bags 1+2.

Moving on to bags 3+4 , we are continuing to build up the four corners, by adding a lattice extending the base towards what I believe will be the center of the completed model. We wrap up this quick stage of the build by adding the 16×16 x 2/3 Road Tiles (part 69958) on the corners.

Even stronger corners by the end of bags 3+4.

Even stronger corners by the end of bags 3+4.

Bags 5+6 promise to connect these four corners into a single strong (but unwieldy) base. I can already tell when roughing-out their relative position that this isn’t going to fit on my normal workbench without some changes… Sure enough, the wedge-shaped modules built in this stage connect the four corners we had already built.

Attaching the corners using four wedge-shaped modules.

Attaching the corners using four wedge-shaped modules.

The resulting base is huge! I had been naively expecting a total size of 64×64 studs, but the base is a bit larger than that — 72×72 studs.

Progress at the end of Bags 5+6.

Progress at the end of Bags 5+6.

We continue to Bags 7+8 where we start covering up the lattice structure quickly using 6x12x 2/3 Road Plates. Those parts have studded indentations on each side, so we spend the rest of the time covering most of the outstanding surfaces with 138 Sand Yellow Dark Tan 2×2 and 1×4 tiles.

Progress at the end of Bags 7+8 (left) and Bags 9+10 (right).

Progress at the end of Bags 7+8 (left) and Bags 9+10 (right).

Completing a smooth base is one of the first milestones in every LEGO Architecture model, which is why I was looking forward to completing bags 9+10 . The last four holes in the base are covered by four more 16x16x 2/3 Road Plates in 330 Olive Green . The rest of the studded gaps are finally covered with a lot more tiles, and 1×2 tiles in 192 Reddish Brown which I believe are meant to represent park benches.

Build time: 61 minutes: (Bags 1+2: 18 minutes, Bags 3+4: 9 minutes, Bags 5+6: 12 minutes, Bags 7+8: 10 minutes, Bags 9+10: 12 minutes.

Bags 11-18: Piers and Foliage

In Bags 11+12 and Bags 13+14 , we build four corners of the tower which are pyramidal in shape and have 5 Brick Yellow Tan on the exterior. The internal structure is simple and brick-built, with some offset work needed to build the two awnings and glass entrances on each corner. To help keep track of the orientation of the model, yellow and red colors are hidden in alternating corners.

With the four corners in place, it’s time to decorate the park beneath the Eiffel Tower. Bags 15+16 involve bushes using a stack of two Flower elements (part 24866) in 28 Dark Green Green , small trees using six of those parts in two different shades of green, and lamp posts which are next to all 48 of the tiny benches from the previous stage.

Bags 17+18 wrap up the first box. This involves painstakingly building eight large trees (with 30 green ‘flower’ elements for each tree) and scattering them around the scene. These last two stages are finger-numbing and slow going, but it adds a nice visual texture to the base.

Progress at the end of Box 1.

Progress at the end of Box 1.

Build time: 78 minutes: (Bags 11+12: 18 minutes, Bags 13+14: 16 minutes, Bags 15+16: 22 minutes, Bags 17+18: 22 minutes.

Initial Thoughts

As I prepare to start building the second box, I am feeling good about this build. The base itself is large and sturdy and I really appreciate the inclusion of a lot of landscaping details in the base. I do expect the build process to slow down a lot from here, since I am less than three hours into a build process that I expect will take 15 hours or more… (It took 14.5 hours to build #10276 Colosseum , which contains about 10% fewer pieces. Learn more in my review of that set.)

Most of all, I am curious to see what kind of “presence” this set has in a room when it is complete. I suspect that even at nearly 5 feet tall, it will feel kind of small when placed directly on the floor, due largely to the way that the real building tapers agressively near the top making it look smaller than it really is. By contrast, placing it on an end table in your living room should cause it to tower over your guests.

I guess that we will have to wait and see… I’m hoping to post the full review before Black Friday, in the hopes that my thoughts will help with your own purchasing decision.

Review: LEGO 10307 Eiffel Tower (2022)

appartement tour eiffel lego

It’s not every day that LEGO crosses the 10,000-piece mark, or gives us a model that’s almost 1.5 metres (4.8 feet) tall, but that day has arrived with 10307 Eiffel Tower , one of LEGO’s most ambitious and impressive models to date.

Releasing on Black Friday 2022 (that’s 25 November), LEGO revisits the Eiffel Tower at this grand scale, making it the tallest LEGO set ever, and one of the most visually impressive.

Like the French icon, this LEGO set is a marvel of engineering, and I think is one of the best LEGO sets this year, BUT.. it’s certainly not for everyone due to its high price, and most importantly, the sheer size of the model. Even if you can afford it when it launches on LEGO.com on Black Friday, you need to seriously plan out where you’re going to place this set (as well as build it), so this really isn’t in the impulse buy category.

That said, I really enjoyed the build, and the end results, so let’s jump straight into my review!

The Unboxing Experience

appartement tour eiffel lego

As you can expect from a set this size, the box is huge and weigh almost 13 kgs, so your postman better have strong arms, or you’ll ideally want a trolley to cart it from the LEGO Store to your car.

The unboxing experience was quite nice, the outer box itself is pretty bland with the now ubiquitous big black boring LEGO for Adults box. Opening the box reveals 3 inner boxes, with a really classy and elegant graphic design signifying which stage of the box you’re about to tackle.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Stacked up, the art on the boxes connect to form a blueprint-like diagram of the Eiffel Tower on the side.

The Eiffel Tower is split up into 3 main sections, and each box is fully self-contained, so this is technically a “Build Together” set, and you can share the joy of building with up to 2 other friends, which I recommend as it drastically cut down the build time, and mount of repetition by sharing the load.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Here’s a look at the three instruction manual booklets, which has the shared black and gold motif.

appartement tour eiffel lego

On the inside are plenty of fun facts about the history of the Eiffel Tower, and Gustave Eiffel who was primarily responsible for bringing it to life (although he didn’t contribute the design!), and how this 324m wrought-iron marvel came about and ultimately became one of Europe’s most well-known landmarks.

Admittedly, I didn’t know much about Gustave Eiffel and the Eiffel Tower (France and Paris is on the to-visit list), but after building this set, I would absolutely love to see it with my own eyes sooner rather than later.

The Building Experience

appartement tour eiffel lego

So I was initially dreading the building experience because I feared how repetitive and boring it would be. I still have flashbacks of 10276 Colosseum , which wasn’t the most enjoyable builds due to slightly different tan wedge after another.

I did take the Rok Zgalin Kobe’s advice (I’ll share my interview with him soon!), and had a few Eiffel Tower documentaries, videos and podcasts prepared for the build.

appartement tour eiffel lego

At 10,001 pieces, this is a long build, and it’s not recommended to blitz through it, and I’m pleased to say that I actually had a really enjoyable time building it, going so far as to say that the build itself IS one of the main drawcards of the set.

There are 74 (!!) numbered bags in the LEGO Eiffel Tower, which is the most I’ve ever encountered in a set.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Yes, there are plenty of repetitive sections, and the lattices in particular get pretty dull after the 40th one, and you’re mostly building in dark grey BUT it didn’t drag on.

It took me about 15 hours to complete the build, and because you get the hang of the shapes after a while, and because the Eiffel Tower really is about engineering and precision, you get into a groove pretty quickly.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The build was also very easy to follow and systematic, although there are some tricky bits, but it wasn’t frustrating at all in the slightest, mostly because I was intrigued by the structure, and was really eager to see how LEGO pulled the design off.

And because it’s so large, it’s also really satisfying seeing this incredible structure take shape in front of your very eyes.

The real Eiffel Tower took just over 2 years to build, and was slightly delayed for the opening of the 10th Exposition Universelle (World Fair) in 1889 of which it had been commissioned for, so 15 hours+ of solo building isn’t too bad.

I recorded myself building the set, so do check out this LEGO Eiffel Tower Speed Build to see how it comes together on my Youtube channel.

The Completed Model

It simply cannot be overstated just how huge and tall this model is, and (like the real Eiffel Tower) you’ll want to see it in person to fully appreciate the awe-inspiring scale, design and engineering that went into this set to make it happen.

appartement tour eiffel lego

At 1.49m, this is LEGO’s tallest set yet, but what’s utterly bewildering is how its constructed, and despite its size, the force is distributed equally to all 4 legs at the bottom, and it manages to keep the entire structure up with just these clips on each leg.

Because of its huge footprint and height, this is really a statement piece, much like the LEGO Titanic and something you’ll need to get creative about to display.

appartement tour eiffel lego

It’s likely going to end up on your floor as it looks quite silly on a table, and when it’s placed on ground level, you really get a proper sense of its height, as you use your own body as a frame of reference.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The Eiffel Tower combines different looks from different eras that amalgamate in what designer Rok Zgalin Kobe feels is the “ideal” image and vision of the Eiffel Tower.

In the current day, the base of the Eiffel Tower has plenty of fencing and structures (and crowds!), but this version has sprawling open spaces, with mini trees, bushes, benches and lamp posts on the esplanade at the base.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The trees are quite nice, and are helpful to establish a sense of scale!

appartement tour eiffel lego

On each “leg”, you can also find these mini stalls, or ticket booths where you can hop on the lifts to ascend to the top.

appartement tour eiffel lego

These red and yellow lifts, which you may remember from the original 10181 Eiffel Tower also make a welcome return!

appartement tour eiffel lego

I cannot express just how impressive the engineering and design behind the LEGO Eiffel Tower’s legs are, to hold up the entire structure without using interlocking bricks, but these clips.

The downward force is distributed evenly between all four legs (which fun fact, points to the four cardinal directions), is just so cool to behold, and a great lesson on LEGO engineering.

appartement tour eiffel lego

My least favourite part of the build are these arches, which like the real Eiffel Tower, have no load bearing capabilities and are just there for decorative purposes.

appartement tour eiffel lego

They make use of newly recoloured dark grey roller coaster track to form the curves, which are really aesthetically pleasing, and this is a great new colour for the track.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Unfortunately, I felt like the arches weren’t secured as well as they could, and if you accidentally bump into them (which happens a lot), or shake the legs, the arches tend to dislodge themselves quite easily as they aren’t fastened by enough bricks, and are suspended upside down as well.

appartement tour eiffel lego

That said, on the fist platform, you’ll notice plenty of these repetitive patterns, which aren’t necessarily fun to build, but are really aesthetically pleasing.

appartement tour eiffel lego

On the sides of the Eiffel Tower, 72  names of French  scientists , engineers, and mathematicians are engraved in recognition of their contributions, and they’re represented here by the dark grey “gold bar element”, with 18 on each side!

appartement tour eiffel lego

And here’s a look at the first platform, before we continue upwards.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Here’s a look at the second platform, where you’ll notice the use of new dark grey sausages for the arcs.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The sausage is a most excellent and useful LEGO element I must say.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Here’s the view as we head up.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Of course, each section has more of these red and yellow elevators, slowly making the climb up on the inner collumn.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Repetition and these intricate iron-wrought lattice that make the Eiffel Tower’s aesthetics so iconic draw the eye in, and the techniques employed to create this effect is simple, yet effective.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Here’s the middle section.

appartement tour eiffel lego

The Eiffel Tower narrows as it approaches the pinnacle, and here is the Top Platform, which among other things contains Gustave Eiffel’s apartment, offering commanding views of Paris.

appartement tour eiffel lego

And at the top, amongst a clump of radio antenna, is a brick-built tricolore Flag, which is a direct throwback to the simple French flag on top of the set’s predecessor, 10181 Eiffel Tower .

Fun fact, the Eiffel Tower was meant to be disassembled after 20 years following the Exposition Universelle in 1889, but Gustave was a savvy and cunning operator, and managed to keep the tower intact by making it host scientific experiments, as well as radio antenna, which the French military found useful, and they decided to extend the life of the Eiffel Tower, and it ultimately stands to this day.

appartement tour eiffel lego

To make it easy to transport (it’s not recommended to carry the entire Tower in one piece… although you can), and to clean or move around, the LEGO Eiffel Tower can split into these 3 parts, allowing you to reposition it with ease if you must.

There are no Technic pins holding these sections together, only good ole gravity, and they lock into each other with ease.

appartement tour eiffel lego

Just how tall is the set? I’ll do a few more comparisons soon, possibly in its own separate post, but here’s the LEGO Eiffel Tower next to the 75313 UCS AT-AT , which was 2021’s Black Friday launch.

appartement tour eiffel lego

And for a better frame of reference that hopefully more people can relate with, here it is next to the LEGO 92176 NASA Apollo Saturn which is just over 100cm tall.

appartement tour eiffel lego

And here it is on ground level next to me – I’m about 172cm for reference!

appartement tour eiffel lego

Oh, and don’t forget to stick your phone, or camera underneath for this view.

What I liked:

  • A marvel of LEGO engineering
  • Is the ultimate LEGO display centerpiece with stunning display presence thanks to its height
  • Incredibly fun and relaxing building experience in spite of repetition
  • Great value for its price

What I didn’t like:

  • Will be hard to display and not everyone has the space for it
  • Arches could’ve been secured better
  • Some repetitive sections in the build

FINAL THOUGHTS:

10307 Eiffel Tower was such a pleasant surprise, and I liked it a lot more than I initially thought I would. After seeing it in person in Billund, I was of course impressed by the height and scale, but came away fearing that the build would be bland, torturous and repetitive.

This clearly isn’t the case, and a lot of effort has been put into the building experience to make it quite intuitive, seamless and as pain-free as possible.

From the first bag, I was captured and hooked, and the anticipation in seeing this massive model come together was very enjoyable, and a testament to Rok Zgalin Kobe’s immense talent and efforts.

The end result is stunning, one of the most awe-inspiring retail models that LEGO has ever produced. Seriously, if you were to see 10307 Eiffel Tower at a LEGO Fan Convention, you’d walk away impressed and awed, so being able to translate that into a set you can walk into a store to buy, AND make it accessible, even for new adult builders cannot be overstated.

That said, this isn’t for everyone. I think the set is great value (especially since it’s US$629 instead of US$679.99 ), and you’re left with a huge LEGO showpiece. It’s still a LOT of money, and this ultimately puts it out of reach for many LEGO fans, especially those that have been hit hardest by inflation, or have other more important priorities.

But this isn’t an impulse buy, and not something that you’d be expected to buy every month. Like any other large expensive models that precede it like the 9,090-piece LEGO Titanic , it’s a large purchase that you really have to want, and likely budget and plan for.

Speaking of planning, you definitely want to plan ahead as it has a footprint of 57 x 57cm, and is of course awkwardly tall, so placing it on a desk or shelf doesn’t really work.

appartement tour eiffel lego

While LEGO is targeting a very specific type of customer with 10307 Eiffel Tower (affluent, has enough space and wants a 1.5m Eiffel Tower to build and display), ultimately, I’m glad the set exists.

appartement tour eiffel lego

If you need space, you can also use the set as a very expensive garden ornament. Only half-joking, I think it might look pretty good outdoors.

At its core, this really is a triumph of engineering, and I’m still blown away by the techniques used in the set, and that this is even possible with LEGO bricks.

The aesthetics, size and how accurate it looks are really secondary to me, and that it stands so well constructed pleases me to no end.

If this is the type of LEGO set that appeals to you, and you have the means, I definitely recommend getting 10307 Eiffel Tower, even at launch (25 November), as you’ll get a really neat 40579 Eiffel’s Apartment gift with purchase (GWP) for your trouble, as well as a bunch of other bonuses as part of LEGO’s Black Friday offering .

I’m glad that we now live in an age where LEGO can and is taking huge risks like this. While the second half of 2022 has seen many disappointing big and expensive releases, 10307 Eiffel Tower bucks the trend by delivering a satisfying and exceptional LEGO experience that’s unlike anything that has come before it.

Like the Titanic, I can see this set doing really well with fans, and those wanting a LEGO experience like no other that befits the LEGO Icons branding.

Rating   and score: 4/5  ★★★ ★✰

Build [4]  – Really enjoyed the flow of the build, despite the repetition. It was quite relaxing, much like puzzle building. Real Value [4]  – It’s expensive but good value, especially if you factor in the Eiffel Apartment GWP Innovation [5]  – Incredible LEGO engineering at work here, without the need for new or fancy elements. Just good ole math and design ingenuity. Coolness [5]  – One of the world’s best known landmarks, at this scale, made out of LEGO. Doesn’t get any cooler than that Keepability [4]  – You will likely not disassemble it as it’s a big investment, unless you really need the space back

Eiffel Tower under construction

Origins and Construction of the Eiffel Tower

It was for the 1889 Exposition Universelle , the date that marked the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, that a great competition was launched in 1886.

The first digging work started on the 26th January 1887 . On the 31st March 1889, the Tower had been finished in record time – 2 years, 2 months and 5 days – and was established as a veritable technical feat .

Key figures

The construction schedule, the design of the eiffel tower.

The plan to build a tower 300 metres high was conceived as part of preparations for the World's Fair of 1889 .

Bolting the joint of two crossbowmen

The wager was to " study the possibility of erecting an iron tower on the Champ-de-Mars with a square base, 125 metres across and 300 metres tall ". Selected from among 107 projects, it was that of Gustave Eiffel, an entrepreneur, Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, both engineers, and Stephen Sauvestre, an architect, that was accepted.

Emile Nouguier and Maurice Koechlin , the two chief engineers in Eiffel's company, had the idea for a very tall tower in June 1884. It was to be designed like a large pylon with four columns of lattice work girders, separated at the base and coming together at the top , and joined to each other by more metal girders at regular intervals.

The tower project was a bold extension of this principle up to a height of 300 metres - equivalent to the symbolic figure of 1000 feet . On September 18 1884 Eiffel registered a patent "for a new configuration allowing the construction of metal supports and pylons capable of exceeding a height of 300 metres".

In order to make the project more acceptable to public opinion, Nouguier and Koechlin commissioned the architect Stephen Sauvestre to work on the project's appearance.

The Koechlin's plan

A quite different first edition

Sauvestre proposed stonework pedestals to dress the legs, monumental arches to link the columns and the first level, large glass-walled halls on each level, a bulb-shaped design for the top and various other ornamental features to decorate the whole of the structure. In the end the project was simplified, but certain elements such as the large arches at the base were retained, which in part give it its very characteristic appearance.

The curvature of the uprights is mathematically determined to offer the most efficient wind resistance possible. As Eiffel himself explains: "All the cutting force of the wind passes into the interior of the leading edge uprights. Lines drawn tangential to each upright with the point of each tangent at the same height, will always intersect at a second point, which is exactly the point through which passes the flow resultant from the action of the wind on that part of the tower support situated above the two points in question. Before coming together at the high pinnacle, the uprights appear to burst out of the ground, and in a way to be shaped by the action of the wind".

The construction

The assembly of the supports began on July 1, 1887 and was completed twenty-two months later.

All the elements were prepared in Eiffel’s factory located at Levallois-Perret on the outskirts of Paris. Each of the 18,000 pieces used to construct the Tower were specifically designed and calculated, traced out to an accuracy of a tenth of a millimetre and then put together forming new pieces around five metres each. A team of constructors, who had worked on the great metal viaduct projects, were responsible for the 150 to 300 workers on site assembling this gigantic erector set.

The rivet workers

All the metal pieces of the tower are held together by rivets, a well-refined method of construction at the time the Tower was constructed. First the pieces were assembled in the factory using bolts , later to be replaced one by one with thermally assembled rivets, which contracted during cooling thus ensuring a very tight fit. A team of four men was needed for each rivet assembled: one to heat it up, another to hold it in place, a third to shape the head and a fourth to beat it with a sledgehammer. Only a third of the 2,500,000 rivets used in the construction of the Tower were inserted directly on site.

Un poste de riveurs

The uprights rest on concrete foundations installed a few metres below ground-level on top of a layer of compacted gravel. Each corner edge rests on its own supporting block, applying to it a pressure of 3 to 4 kilograms per square centimetre , and each block is joined to the others by walls.

On the Seine side of the construction, the builders used watertight metal caissons and injected compressed air , so that they were able to work below the level of the water.

Eiffel Tower construction 1

The tower was assembled using wooden scaffolding and small steam cranes mounted onto the tower itself.

The assembly of the first level was achieved by the use of twelve temporary wooden scaffolds, 30 metres high, and four larger scaffolds of 40 metres each.

"Sand boxes" and hydraulic jacks - replaced after use by permanent wedges - allowed the metal girders to be positioned to an accuracy of one millimetre.

On December 7, 1887 , the joining of the major girders up to the first level was completed. The pieces were hauled up by steam cranes, which themselves climbed up the Tower as they went along using the runners to be used for the Tower's lifts.

months to build the foundations

It only took five months to build the foundations and twenty-one to finish assembling the metal pieces of the Tower.

Considering the rudimentary means available at that period, this could be considered record speed. The assembly of the Tower was a marvel of precision , as all chroniclers of the period agree. The construction work began in January 1887 and was finished on March 31, 1889 . On the narrow platform at the top, Eiffel received his decoration from the Legion of Honour.

"A thick cloud of tar and coal smoke seized the throat , and we were deafened by the din of metal screaming beneath the hammer. Over there they were still working on the bolts: workmen with their iron bludgeons, perched on a ledge just a few centimetres wide, took turns at striking the bolts (these in fact were the rivets). One could have taken them for blacksmiths contentedly beating out a rhythm on an anvil in some village forge, except that these smiths were not striking up and down vertically, but horizontally, and as with each blow came a shower of sparks , these black figures, appearing larger than life against the background of the open sky, looked as if they were reaping lightning bolts in the clouds. "

Debate and controversy surrounding the Eiffel Tower

Even before the end of its construction, the Tower was already at the heart of much debate. Enveloped in criticism from the biggest names in the world of Art and Literature, the Tower managed to stand its ground and achieve the success it deserved.

L'exposition universelle de 1889

Various pamphlets and articles were published throughout the year of 1886, le 14 février 1887, la protestation des Artistes.

The "Protest against the Tower of Monsieur Eiffel", published in the newspaper Le Temps , is addressed to the World's Fair's director of works, Monsieur Alphand. It is signed by several big names from the world of literature and the arts : Charles Gounod, Guy de Maupassant, Alexandre Dumas junior, François Coppée, Leconte de Lisle, Sully Prudhomme, William Bouguereau, Ernest Meissonier, Victorien Sardou, Charles Garnier and others to whom posterity has been less kind.

Portrait de Charles Garnier

Other satirists pushed the violent diatribe even further, hurling insults like : "this truly tragic street lamp" (Léon Bloy), "this belfry skeleton" (Paul Verlaine), "this mast of iron gymnasium apparatus, incomplete, confused and deformed" (François Coppée), "this high and skinny pyramid of iron ladders, this giant ungainly skeleton upon a base that looks built to carry a colossal monument of Cyclops, but which just peters out into a ridiculous thin shape like a factory chimney" (Maupassant), "a half-built factory pipe, a carcass waiting to be fleshed out with freestone or brick, a funnel-shaped grill, a hole-riddled suppository" (Joris-Karl Huysmans).

Portrait d'Alexandre Dumas

Once the Tower was finished the criticism burnt itself out in the presence of the completed masterpiece, and in the light of the enormous popular success with which it was greeted. It received two million visitors during the World's Fair of 1889.

" We come, we writers, painters, sculptors, architects, lovers of the beauty of Paris which was until now intact, to protest with all our strength and all our indignation, in the name of the underestimated taste of the French, in the name of French art and history under threat, against the erection in the very heart of our capital, of the useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower which popular ill-feeling, so often an arbiter of good sense and justice, has already christened the Tower of Babel. (...)

Is the City of Paris any longer to associate itself with the baroque and mercantile fancies of a builder of machines, thereby making itself irreparably ugly and bringing dishonour ? (...). To comprehend what we are arguing one only needs to imagine for a moment a tower of ridiculous vertiginous height dominating Paris, just like a gigantic black factory chimney, its barbarous mass overwhelming and humiliating all our monuments and belittling our works of architecture, which will just disappear before this stupefying folly.

And for twenty years we shall see spreading across the whole city, a city shimmering with the genius of so many centuries, we shall see spreading like an ink stain, the odious shadow of this odious column of bolted metal.

Gustave Eiffel’s Response

In an interview in the newspaper Le Temps of February 14 1887, Eiffel gave a reply to the artists' protest, neatly summing up his artistic doctrine:

"For my part I believe that the Tower will possess its own beauty . Are we to believe that because one is an engineer, one is not preoccupied by beauty in one's constructions, or that one does not seek to create elegance as well as solidity and durability ? Is it not true that the very conditions which give strength also conform to the hidden rules of harmony ? (...) Now to what phenomenon did I have to give primary concern in designing the Tower ? It was wind resistance.

Well then ! I hold that the curvature of the monument's four outer edges, which is as mathematical calculation dictated it should be (...) will give a great impression of strength and beauty , for it will reveal to the eyes of the observer the boldness of the design as a whole. Likewise the many empty spaces built into the very elements of construction will clearly display the constant concern not to submit any unnecessary surfaces to the violent action of hurricanes, which could threaten the stability of the edifice. Moreover there is an attraction in the colossal, and a singular delight to which ordinary theories of art are scarcely applicable ".
