Thompson Honored as Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy Graduate

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Ohio Travel Association is proud to announce that Katie Thompson of Visit Dublin Ohio graduated from the Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy during the Ohio Conference on Travel. The conference was held Oct. 12-14 at Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Sandusky.

The Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy is a 6-month program designed to develop Ohio travel industry leaders. The programming explores travel and tourism’s role and contributions to outdoor recreation and conservation, transportation, economic development, heritage, and historic preservation, and arts and culture. Sessions also focus on transportation, leadership skills, advocacy, and media. Including this year’s class of 23 graduates, there are now 260 Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy alumni. 

“Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy graduates are well-versed on travel’s undeniable contributions to communities and the state of Ohio,” said Ohio Travel Association Executive Director Melinda Huntley. “Through meetings with state leaders, individual study, and group projects, these professionals are ready to lead and innovate.”    

The Ohio Travel Association is the non-profit association representing attractions, destination marketing organizations, hotels, museums, suppliers, restaurants, campgrounds and other businesses that makeup Ohio’s $47 billion travel industry. Scholarship Program

Visit grove city has created a scholarship program with the goal of giving back to and supporting current and emerging leaders in our local tourism community.  the scholarship program includes the following:.

  • One (1) scholarship to the Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy (OTLA) for any member of the local community.
  • Up to twenty (20) scholarships to the Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) Program for members of the local community
  • Two (2) $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors from the South-Western City School District who plan to pursue a post-secondary or higher level of education in the tourism or hospitality industry.

The academy, presented by the Ohio Travel Association, is a six-month program designed to, “develop Ohio travel industry leaders.”

Programming explores travel and tourism’s role and contributions to outdoor recreation and conservation, transportation, economic development, heritage and historic preservation, and arts and culture. Sessions also focus on advocacy and media. Including this year’s class of 25 members, there are now 211 Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy alumni.

Amy graduated from Ashland University in 1992, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and a minor in Philosophy.

Upon graduation, she went to work for Creative Associates, Inc. in Mansfield, Ohio, a full-service advertising and marketing agency. She worked for Creative Associates until the day it closed in December, 2000.

In March of 2001, Amy was hired as the Executive Director of the Ashland Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. Her main function is to promote the Ashland Area as a convention and tourist destination to regional, state, national, and international visitors. Or, as she likes to call it, to be the #1 cheerleader for Ashland!

Amy participates in various ways in this community that she loves. She is a member of the Kiwanis Club (past President) and now Co-Chairs the new Kiwanis Safety Town Program, Ashland Public Library Board of Trustees (current Vice President), Co-founder and Chair of the Mohican Wildlife Weekend Planning Committee, Ashland Chautauqua Committee (Co-Chair), Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor Board (past President) and Ashland Main Street Board (current Secretary). She is a 2002 graduate of Leadership Ashland and 2009 graduate of the Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy. She served on the board of the Ohio Travel Association for three years and the Ashland Bicentennial Steering Committee from 2010 to 2015.

Amy is very interested in building relationships within our community and working together to make Ashland the best place to live, work, play, and raise a family.

Her husband, Russell, is a probation/parole officer for the Ohio Adult Parole Authority. Together they have one son, James, who is the light of their lives.

About Kaylee

Kaylee is a graduate of Ashland High School Class of 2011 where she succeeded in Cheerleading for the Cheerleading program. She is an energetic individual with a positive attitude. You can always count on her having that great big smile! Her passions include her kids (Dawson and Lara). She also loves traveling to Florida with her husband Christopher. Kaylee and her family are huge Ohio State fans and can catch her at the Cleveland Brown Stadium cheering on the Brownies on a Sunday. Kaylee is excited to use her passion for the Ashland Community and continue to help make it a better place.

John Swope is the Director of Field Education and Assistant Professor of Practical Theology at Ashland Theological Seminary. His background includes teaching middle school, pastoring in various ministries, as well as teaching and administrating in higher education. He holds advanced degrees in leadership, divinity and theology. John has served in a variety of leadership roles in the Brethren Church on the regional and national level, as well as at the university and seminary. John and his wife, Catherine, have four grown children and two grandchildren. They enjoy the out-of-doors, reading, and visiting their grandchildren!

Senior Leadership

David gilbert, hannah belsito, marie scalia, rick wilson-negron, gordon taylor iii, jennifer valencic, steven dieringer, emily lauer, sharrona burns, david gilbert , he/him/his.

With a passion for all things Cleveland, David Gilbert joined Destination Cleveland in 2011, adding to his role as president and CEO of Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. From 2015 through 2017, he led the Cleveland Host Committee for the 2016 Republican National Convention.   David’s focus includes identifying new ways for the organization to contribute to the economic growth of the industry and region through its visitor attraction and destination management efforts. He also works collaboratively with civic and public partners to design innovative initiatives that advance the region. Under his leadership, efforts to promote Cleveland as an exciting, vibrant destination have contributed to 20% visitation growth and a 40% increase in visitor-generated direct sales since 2011. Additionally, Cuyahoga County’s annual visitation growth rate has consistently outpaced the domestic visitation growth rate during his tenure, including over nine consecutive years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.   David also dedicates his time to several organizations. He serves as Chair of the North Coast Waterfront Development Corporation Board and as a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, and many other local, national and international organization Boards of Directors. During his career, he has been recognized as one of Cleveland’s “30 Influencers of the Past 30 Years” by Crain’s Cleveland Business, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year and the 2016 SME Cleveland Business Executive of the Year Award.   David holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Cleveland State University. He holds an honorary doctorate from Baldwin-Wallace University. When not busy enjoying Cleveland’s Metroparks on his bike, David travels, trains for marathons and hangs out with his family.

Hannah Belsito, she/her/hers

Hannah Belsito leads the team focused on applying community and consumer insights to develop authentic Cleveland experiences for visitors. She considers her work at Destination Cleveland to be a dream job, allowing her to combine her love of new experiences with the opportunity to work with people who are excited to share their hometown with the world.

Since joining Destination Cleveland in 2011, Hannah and her team’s effort to enhance and update Cleveland’s destination experience have included several notable projects, including the ideation, design, site selection and installation of the now-renowned Cleveland script signs.

Hannah holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from John Carroll University and a master’s degree in urban planning, design & development from Cleveland State University. She brought experience across multiple sectors to Destination Cleveland and currently serves on U.S. Travel Association’s At-Large Board of Directors.

Hannah and her family live in Lakewood and frequently take advantage of the city’s outdoor experiences, including flying kites at Edgewater Park or bike riding through the Metroparks and on the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail.

Marie Scalia, she/her/hers

Marie Scalia has been part of the marketing team for Destination Cleveland since 2012. In her current role, she is responsible for overseeing the organization’s integrated marketing efforts, including development and management of the Cleveland brand, digital marketing, web development and major event campaigns. 

Marie holds a bachelor’s degree in interpersonal communications with a minor in marketing from Kent State University and an MBA from Cleveland State University. Shortly after joining the organization, she was part of the work to define and introduce the Cleveland visitor brand, resulting, most notably, in the creation of the now-viral hashtag #ThisIsCLE and Cleveland script signs. She was a key part of the work to bring ABC’s “The Bachelor” to Cleveland for an episode in 2019 and instrumental in the local marketing efforts for the 2021 NFL Draft and 2022 NBA All-Star Game. In 2021, Marie was named a Distinguished Sales and Marketing Awardrecipient by SME Cleveland.

Her list of Cleveland favorites includes strolling the stalls at West Side Market, chowing down in Little Italy, experiencing the city’s culture at the Cleveland Museum of Art and connecting with nature along the lakefront.

Rick Wilson-Negron, he/him/his

Born and raised in Cleveland, Rick Wilson-Negron boomeranged to the city in 2021 after a decade away. At Destination Cleveland, he is in the business of caring for the organization’s people and internal operations, including overseeing everything related to benefits, technology, company policies, culture, learning, talent development and more.

Rick holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from John Carroll University and a master’s degree in labor relations and human resources from Cleveland State University. Prior to joining Destination Cleveland, he spent nearly 20 years in human resources at AT&T, where he was instrumental in multiple initiatives that advanced company culture and prioritized diversity, equity and inclusion. He has held volunteer roles for several organizations that support the LGBTQ+ community and currently serves on the board for the Cleveland State University Alumni Association.

When he’s not spending time with his sisters, their children and his extended family, he enjoys experiencing all the things that make Cleveland a destination city, including its outdoor activities, culinary experiences and unique arts and culture scene. Rick also enjoys catching up on his favorite TV shows and discovering new ones with his husband and their dog, Barky.

Gordon Taylor III, he/him/his

Gordon Taylor III leads the Convention Sales & Services team, which focuses on selling Cleveland as a meetings, conventions and events host city and provides meeting planners and event attendees with a first-class experience before and while they are here. Gordon and his team pride themselves on sharing the energy of the city and making everyone feel like they are part of the Cleveland community. 

Gordon joined Destination Cleveland in 2019 after spending more than 20 years at leading hotel properties, including Hyatt Regency Austin, Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel in Chicago and, most recently, the Waldorf Astoria Chicago and Conrad Chicago, which he helped to open in 2016. 

Gordon holds a bachelor’s degree in speech communication and rhetoric from Eastern Illinois University. A native of Macomb, Ill., Gordon feels he belonged in Cleveland from the moment he arrived – saying there’s “no waiting period” to be a true Clevelander.

Outside of the office, he enjoys grilling and cooking, letting other people do the cooking at Cleveland’s many diverse restaurants, playing sports with his children and traveling with his wife to see new cities and hotels.

Jennifer Valencic, she/her/hers

Jen Valencic, who joined Destination Cleveland in 2013, oversees the organization’s community and stakeholder engagements. Her team manages relationships with local hospitality businesses, corporate partners and local government and economic development partners. The team also leads efforts to welcome locals and visitors at the Cleveland Visitors Center.   Jen takes pride in knowing the work the organization does is changing perceptions of the city. She has served on the Local Organizing Committees for the 2016 Republican National Convention, the 2019 MLB All-Star Game, the 2021 NFL Draft and the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. In 2019, she also helped lead the effort to host ABC’s “The Bachelor” for a Cleveland-based episode, which put the city in front of a global audience. Jen holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communications from Ohio University. Prior to Destination Cleveland, Jen worked for five years at Junior Achievement of Greater Cleveland. She gives back to the community as a member of the Northern Ohio Advisory Board of Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.    Jen and her husband love exploring the Cleveland area through the eyes of their three children, whether it’s spending a day on the water or visiting the animals at the zoo. The family finds any excuse they can to visit Downtown Cleveland and appreciates that they are just a short drive from so many other cities and experiences.

Steven Dieringer, he/him/his

Steven Dieringer, who joined the organization in August 2019, keeps Destination Cleveland's financials in top form. He focuses on streamlining policies, procedures and reports related to the organization’s financial operations and takes pride in seeing how his team’s behind-the-scenes work for projects comes to life to benefit the community.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Steven provided critical financial updates to Destination Cleveland leadership and helped to guide the organization through the significant financial impact by implementing procedures that allowed his team to carefully monitor cash flow, pursue emergency funding and recommend the return of programs in a sustainable manner.

Steven is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a master’s degree in accountancy from University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He enjoys making a mark on the community through his service on the Associate Board of Malachi House.

Steven is a keen fan of the beauty of Cleveland summers and spends the warmer months visiting Edgewater Park and Whiskey Island, taking in concerts at Nautica Pavilion, attending some of the city’s many festivals and experiencing Cleveland’s culinary scene.

Emily Lauer, she/her/hers

As a Cleveland native, Emily Lauer relishes the opportunity to promote her hometown. She develops and oversees the implementation of Destination Cleveland’s PR strategies that contribute to changing perceptions and strengthening the narrative of Cleveland. She also leads B2B communication efforts to bolster community understanding of the organization’s work and travel and tourism’s economic impact.

Since joining Destination Cleveland in 2015, Emily has been instrumental in the PR and communications efforts surrounding Cleveland’s hosting of several large-scale national events. Among those was her leadership of the PRSA Silver Anvil Award-winning PR and communications efforts for the Cleveland Host Committee for the 2016 Republican National Convention. She also led visiting media efforts for the 2021 NFL Draft and the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. 

Prior to joining Destination Cleveland, she spent 18 years at two marketing communications agencies in Cleveland. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, she is a longtime PRSA member and is Accredited in Public Relations by UAB.

Emily enjoys exploring Cleveland’s greenspaces and spends the warm weather months taking advantage of living just a short walk from the Lake Erie shore on the East side. When not globetrotting, she can be found experiencing Cleveland’s independent music venues and seeking out unique culinary experiences throughout the city.

Sharrona Burns, she/her/hers

Sharrona Burns was born, raised and educated in Cleveland. She shares a genuine love and passion for her hometown while serving as a strategic business leader within her department. Sharrona manages the convention sales and services team to bring economic impact-generating conventions and group business to The Land.    Sharron joined Destination Cleveland in January 2020, bringing more than 25 years of sales experience to the organization, most recently as the senior director of sales for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and with a previous stop at the Cleveland Play House. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Cleveland State University. She is accredited as a Certified Tour Professional (CTP) with the National Tour Association and holds the Certified Travel Industry Specialist (CTIS) designation from the American Bus Association and is a 2012 graduate of the Ohio Travel Association Ohio Tourism Leadership Academy. Her work has been recognized by SMEI Akron, SME Cleveland and the Black Professionals Association Charitable Foundation.   Sharrona currently serves on the board of the Cleveland State University Alumni Association. In her free time, she enjoys exploring Cleveland’s restaurants and entertainment districts, spending time near Lake Erie and visiting the world-class arts and cultural institutions in town.

Build Your Leadership Toolkit!

The Leadership Academy at Ohio University is a twelve-month program targeted to emerging and mid-level employees in public service who want to build their leadership skills. The program is a great fit for administrators from governmental and nonprofit organizations, as well as appointed and elected officials.

  • The Leadership Academy provides skills and knowledge to help individuals identify and develop their leadership performance. 
  • The Leadership Academy presents relevant and useful information which engages learners in the content of each workshop.
  • Completion of The Leadership Academy is a required component of the Ohio Certified Public Manager® Program .

Cleveland State University also offers a Leadership Academy . Either program will meet the requirements of the Ohio Certified Public Manager Program. 

Leadership Academy at Ohio University Curriculum

The program is twelve workshops, held once a month. The list below shows the topics for the in-person workshops. The order of the curriculum may change from year to year based on instructor availability. All workshop are 9:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.

Participants will leave each workshop with tools and techniques that are practical and can be applied immediately.

OCPM-LA Fall 2023 Cohort Information

The Capstone

In addition to participating in the twelve, in-person workshops, participants will identify, design, contribute to, and complete a group Capstone Project benefitting a community-based organization. This project requires work in addition to time spent in workshops.

Upon successful completion of The Leadership Academy, participants will receive a certificate of completion from Ohio University. This certificate does not confer academic or continuing education credit.

Participants who have also completed the Public Management Academy at Cleveland State University will be eligible to receive their Certified Public Manager designation. The Ohio Certified Public Manager designation is awarded by Cleveland State University.

Faculty include subject matter experts, practitioners, and guests with experience relevant to the workshop topic.

The Leadership Academy is held once a month, in-person at the Ohio University Dublin Campus, 6805 Bobcat Way, Dublin, Ohio 43016.

Program Cost 

The registration fee for The Leadership Academy at Ohio University is $3,200 per participant, which includes twelve full-day workshops, instructional materials, and lunch. Parking is free at the Dublin Campus.

Be a voice for change, details  , february 13, 2019 10:00am - 3:00pm, ohio tourism leadership academy, tourism arts & culture, ohio travel association, participating in the ohio tourism leadership academy is more than just learning about the ohio travel economy and the role you play. it's also about strengthening your network with peers and existing leadership. during each session, you discuss critical regional and statewide issues with leaders from statewide public, private and nonprofit organizations. learning occurs through panel discussions,  presentations, tours, written assignments and other activities designed to deepen your understanding of ohio travel industry challenges and opportunities, as well as to inspire you to make a difference.   , the program consists of six classes with session locations taking place in the greater columbus area. classes are held monthly from january through june. they begin at 10 am and conclude at 3 pm., class members have included those from attractions, museums, theme parks, cvbs, local government, state agencies, federal legislators, community development offices, restaurants, hotels and more. .
