Azamara welcomes shoreside team members back to a brand-new office space, encouraging collaboration, flexibility and wellbeing

Following Azamara’s transition to become an independent cruise company last year, the move marks a new chapter in the Azamara story, with shiny new headquarters close to the port of Miami. The new office is designed to evoke the laidback environment of its Coconut Grove neighborhood, which mirrors the company’s philosophy onboard, and will also place a focus on the shoreside team’s wellbeing by introducing a new hybrid work environment and more flexible PTO policy for all employees.

The Azamara team will be officially welcomed to the new office Monday, February 14th, 2022, with a new hybrid work environment in place that allows more flexibility to work from the office and from home. To promote a vibrant workforce, Azamara has also increased vacation time and introduced flexible PTO policies for all employees. Through this new flexible and hybrid approach, Azamara aims to help employees maintain a healthy work-life balance, encouraging them to take more personal time for rest, relaxation and other needs, to avoid burnout and return to work feeling recharged and renewed.

The Studio 5 Design & Associates team – who also designed The Den, a central lively lounge on all of Azamara’s ships – worked closely with the company to implement an open office layout paired with calming earth tones, designed to feel like a welcoming resort, while functioning as a modern workplace. At the center of the open plan space, and visible from every desk, sits The Lounge with coffee shop style seating, giving the team a comfortable area to come together.

Miami’s Coconut Grove neighborhood was founded by an eclectic mix of pioneers, artists, and adventurers, making it the ideal setting for the Destination Immersion-focused company. New Leadership and Big Changes at Azamara

• November 7, 2023

Azamara today announced the appointment of two senior executives to lead the company in its next phase of growth, according to a press release.

Dondra Ritzenthaler has been named Incoming Chief Executive Officer.

A 40-year veteran of the travel industry, Ms. Ritzenthaler was most recently the Senior Vice President of Sales, Trade Support and Services for the Americas for Celebrity Cruises. Prior to her 20 years with Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, she spent nearly 20 years with American Airlines in a number of sales and marketing leadership roles. Ms. Ritzenthaler will begin at Azamara in May 2024.

Until that time, Chair of Azamara, Dan Hanrahan, will provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of the team.

“Azamara provides a unique and exciting offering within the luxury cruise space, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the company into its next chapter,” said Ritzenthaler. “I look forward to working with the talented team and their travel partners to better serve the customer base and grow the Azamara brand.”

Alain Ferzli joins Azamara as Chief Financial Officer, effective immediately. Mr. Ferzli has more than 20 years of significant experience driving profitable growth in the cruise industry. He served as the acting Chief Financial Officer for Virgin Voyages and in various financial leadership roles with Royal Caribbean.

Mr. Hanrahan commented: “Our team has worked diligently to maintain a solid foundation for Azamara amid unique industry-wide challenges over the last several years. Dondra and Alain’s deep knowledge of and experience leading cruise lines will support the shift of our focus to expanding our business and realizing Azamara’s full potential.”

A Side trip to Moscow

Have you thought about a cruise visit to the Baltics? One of our clients offered this very interesting diary of a summer trip  to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and we thought you might enjoy reading it. Enjoy…

This offered us the unique opportunity to explore the Russian capital in one day. Indeed, we were going from one capital – St. Petersburg, the capital for 200 years – to the historical capital of Moscow, which was founded back in the 11th Century, and restored as the capital by the Bolsheviks in 1917. We were taken by air in a one-hour flight to Moscow, where waiting coaches, escorted by a police car took us directly to the Kremlin. As we transferred to a bus and saw the countryside surrounding Moscow, we were struck by how clean and cosmopolitan the city was. And then the Kremlin, which means “fortress” in Russian. It’s aptly named, as the entire facility (70 acres worth) is surrounded by a high wall. Once inside, our first stop was the Armory, the repository of famous artifacts stored their throughout the centuries. Old Bibles encrusted with jewels, magnificent carriages that once transported the Tsars, and 10 of the surviving jeweled eggs crafted by Carl Faberge as gifts for the last Tsar, Nicholas II, and his wife Alexandra.

Then we were off to visit some of the most beautiful churches in the world, including one of the most famous (St. Basel’s, with its colored turrets reflecting the Ottoman Empire style) in the world. Also impressive was the world’s largest cannon, commissioned centuries ago and fired but only a few times. And then it was lunch time in the Alexandr Pushkin restaurant, one of the most famous eateries in the city (and only a few blocks from the Kremlin, down the street from the old KGB headquarters.) Lunch consisted of tomato and mozzarella salad, beet and beef soup, chicken and veal patties, sorbet for dessert, and an excellent Bordeaux. After this tasty meal, it was back to the Kremlin for one more visit – this time to view the famous (and vast) Red Square, and some last-minute shopping at the G.U.M. department store on the corner of the Square. (Remind me to show you my prize purchase – a necklace of heart-shaped amber, a popular semiprecious stone in Russia.)

Then it was back to the airport – again under police escort – for the one-hour flight back to St. Petersburg. We didn’t get back to the ship until 11pm, but have no regrets for this exhausting but fascinating day. And…it was still light outside when we arrived at the ship, compliments of the famous “White Nights” representative of St. Petersburg at this time of year.
