World’s most luxurious cruise ship to star in Channel 5 documentary

Explorer Suite

The monumental task of constructing Regent Seven Seas Explorer, dubbed the world’s most luxurious cruise ship, is to be the subject of an exciting new documentary on Channel 5.

The two-part documentary, which airs at 9pm on Friday 2nd December, will follow engineers and designers over 18 months as they work on the design and build of the epic ship.

The first episode will begin with CEO Frank Del Rio explaining his vision for Seven Seas Explorer, and will follow him on his quest to source £5 million worth of art to adorn the vessel. It goes on to follow the interior designers as they try to balance unparalleled luxury with practicality and engineering. The second episode is a race against time as 1,500 workers toil to ensure that all the fixtures and fittings are ready for when the first guests are welcomed on board.

Graham Sadler, managing director of Regent Seven Seas Cruises said: “This fascinating documentary illustrates the level of detail that went into constructing Seven Seas Explorer and shows why it has been described as the most luxurious ship ever built. The programmes are an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to a huge audience our interpretation of true luxury and the real meaning of all-inclusive as delivered with Regent Seven Seas Cruises. I hope that those who watch it from the travel trade are able to use the information to inform their valued customers, as I am sure many more people will want to cruise on not only the most luxurious ship, but on the most luxurious fleet in the world”

Seven Seas Explorer was launched in July 2016 and delivers an ultra-luxury cruise experience unlike any other. Featuring unparalleled extravagance, the 750-passenger vessel carries some of the highest space-to-guest and crew-to-guest ratios of any cruise ship.

The ship is currently sailing around the Caribbean out of Miami, and will return to Europe in spring 2017 to sail a variety of itineraries around the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, many starting in Southampton.

All 66 suites come with impressive views of the ocean

Those in the regent suite can enjoy a first-class experience with their own butler and a personal car with a driver and guide at every port.

The Regent Suite also comes with a hot tub on the balcony and like several other bathrooms on the ship, guests can wash their face by turning on stunning gold taps.

They are also equipped with Dyson hairdryers and toiletries by French luxury brand, L'Occitane.

Guests staying in the 66 suites are greeted by fresh flowers in vases that cost an eye-watering £25,000.

Other incredible accommodations on board include the Splendor Suite and Penthouse Suite.

They all even have a pillow menu to cover the sleeping styles of their various guests.

Luxury dining

There are several exquisite restaurants on board the Seven Seas Splendor

The eye-popping luxury is not only limited to the suites - it also extends to the world-class restaurants.

The ship's Culinary Arts Kitchen gives guests the chance to get hands-on with gourmet cooking classes that are presented by world-class chefs and instructors.

One of the ship's restaurants includes Compass Rose, the largest speciality restaurant at sea.

Others include Pacific Rim, which serves a range of Asian foods and is decorated with mythical dragon structures, and Prime 7, a steakhouse with an intimate atmosphere.

There's also a French eatery called Chartreuse and an Italian restaurant which has an outstanding over-water seating space that brings guests even closer to the ocean.

£4m art collection & 500 crystal chandeliers

The theatre provides nightly performances by experienced Broadway stars

Regent Seven Seas, the luxury cruise line based in Miami, Florida, runs the cruise.

The company owns four other vessels, with Seven Seas Splendor, built in 2020, the newest.

Inside the boat, guests are greeted by a £4million curated art collection by the likes of Joan Miro, more than 500 crystal chandeliers hanging on high ceilings and 46,000 sq ft of high-end Italian marble.

The 55,254 gross tons ship - whose floor space is bigger than three football pitches - is able to welcome over 730 guests and has 567 members of staff.

On the top deck is the vessel's main pool, which rivals that of most 5-star hotels.

For entertainment, there's a two-deck-high Constellation Theatre that promises to thrill audiences with nightly performances.

An exciting and revealing two-part documentary following engineers and designers in the monumental task of constructing Seven Seas Explorer, is to be aired on Channel 5 in the UK.

The all-inclusive, ultra-luxury cruise line – Regent Seven Seas Cruises – allowed cameras from production company Windfall Films to follow Seven Seas Explorer’s construction story over an 18-month period. With incredible access to the company’s executives and Italian ship yard team at Fincantieri, the programme provides a fascinating and compelling insight into the process.

EXP at Sea2

The first episode, airing 9pm, Friday 2 December 2016, begins with CEO Frank Del Rio outlining his vision for the ship and joins him in a personal quest to acquire £5 million worth of art fit to adorn the prospective floating palace of luxury.

The episode goes on to illustrate the meticulous planning taken by the ship’s interior designers, as they try to balance unparalleled opulence with the engineering practicalities of a 6-star floating hotel.

With the steel structure assembled, the second episode – airing 9pm Friday 9 December – picks up the story eight months before the ship’s maiden voyage.

To minimise vibrations on board, specially designed propellers are delicately installed and then it’s a race against time for the 1500 workers to ensure that all the luxury fixtures and fittings are up to standard, ready to welcome the first guests on board – a challenge that could cost the company an estimated $25 million in lost reputation if not met.

The second episode also charts Seven Seas Explorer’s essential seafaring milestones and requirements such as its first nail-biting manoeuvre afloat, and the ship’s sea trials which, among other rigorous assessments, include the testing of the anchor and launching of life boats.

“This fascinating documentary illustrates the level of detail that went into constructing Seven Seas Explorer and shows why it has been described as the most luxurious ship ever built,” said Graham Sadler, managing director, Regent Seven Seas Cruises. “The programmes are an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to a huge audience our interpretation of true luxury and the real meaning of all-inclusive as delivered with Regent Seven Seas Cruises.”

Sadler continued, “I hope that those who watch it from the travel trade are able to use the information to inform their valued customers, as I am sure many more people will want to cruise on not only the most luxurious ship, but on the most luxurious fleet in the world.”

Seven Seas Explorer was christened by Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco in July 2016 and delivers an unrivalled luxury cruise experience. The ship features extravagantly designed theatres and lounges, an unparalleled collection of opulent and spacious suites, five lavish gourmet restaurants and an unprecedented level of personalised service. At 55,254 gross-registered tons and carrying only 750 guests, the all-suite, all-balcony ship boasts one of the highest space ratios and highest crew to guest ratios in the cruise industry, not to mention the largest private verandas in the cruise industry and a new category of luxury suite – the nearly 4,500-square foot Regent Suite which comes with a grand Steinway piano, a personal butler and its own in-suite spa.

The luxury liner’s maiden season was in the Mediterranean and now sails a series of Caribbean voyages from Miami over the winter. She will return to Europe in spring 2017 to sail a variety of Mediterranean and northern European itineraries, many of which sail to and from Southampton.

Scenic Eclipse to feature on Cruising with Susan Calman

Luxury expedition ship Scenic Eclipse will feature in two upcoming episodes of Channel 5’s Cruising with Susan Calman this February.

The episodes will chronicle Scottish comedian Susan Calman’s once-in-a-lifetime journey to Antarctica aboard the 228-guest luxury vessel. From braving the Drake Passage to experiencing close encounters with the incredible wildlife of the White Continent, the episodes will highlight the extraordinary experiences offered by Scenic Ocean Cruises on their signature 12-night ‘Antarctica in Depth’ itinerary.

Now in its third season, Cruising with Susan Calman continues to shine a spotlight on some of cruising’s biggest names, along with a few best-kept secrets. Over the past four weeks, we’ve had episodes focused on Carnival Cruise Line, Riviera’s Douro river cruises , and a two-part look at Windstar Cruises’ legendary Tahiti programme .

Scenic Eclipse – Antarctica in Depth

While various cruise lines offer Antarctica itineraries, we’ve always believed that Scenic stands out in its class. Setting sail roundtrip from Ushuaia, the 12-night Antarctica in Depth voyage includes six full days of exploration.

Each journey, led by the Scenic Eclipse Discovery Team, treats guests to a packed activity programme. This includes Zodiac excursions, shoreside landings, and hikes. For those seeking more adventure, there’s the option of a helicopter ride or a journey below the waves in the custom-built submarine Scenic Neptune.

When not exploring ashore, the Scenic Eclipse serves as a sanctuary of six-star relaxation. Boasting stunning all-suite accommodations, a full-service spa, and world-class dining, the yacht truly distinguishes itself. Perhaps best of all, nearly every aspect of your experience is included in the fare.

As seen on Maritime Masters

Of course, Scenic Eclipse is no stranger to the spotlight. Last year, the Discovery Channel offered viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the operations of The World’s First Discovery Yacht as it journeyed from Mexico to Antarctica. The high-production series, ‘Maritime Masters: Expedition Antarctica,’ offered a fantastic insight into the meticulous efforts of the crew to ensure these expeditions operate seamlessly.

(If you missed watching this fantastic programme last year, you can watch every episode on YouTube ).

How to watch Scenic Eclipse on Cruising with Susan Calman

The hour-long episodes will be broadcast on Channel 5 on the following dates:

  • 9th February @8pm
  • 16th February @8pm

Alternatively, the episodes will also be able to stream on catch-up via Channel 5’s My5 platform .

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

The Good Ship Murder's Catherine Tyldesley on working with Shayne Ward again

Former Corrie stars Catherine Tyldesley and Shayne Ward on being reunited in new cruise drama The Good Ship Murder.

First Officer Kate Woods (Catherine Tyldesley) and Jack Grayling (Shayne Ward) stand on the deck of a ship with a beautiful Mediterranean sunset behind them. On the deck behind them are lots of suitcases wrapped in neon yellow tape marked 'crime scene do not cross'

Catherine Tyldesley and Shayne Ward captured the nation's hearts when they played on-off lovers Eva Price and Aidan Connor in Coronation Street . Now the stars have been reunited, but in very different circumstances, as sleuths in Channel 5's new drama The Good Ship Murder !

The series follows a luxury cruise liner touring the Mediterranean, where cabaret singer Jack Grayling (played by Shane) — who also happens to be a former detective — is drawn back into his old line of work to solve a wave of mysteries that occur in various sun-soaked locations on the ship's itinerary, alongside ambitious First Officer Kate Woods (played by Catherine) — a true-crime fan with a keen eye for a clue!

We caught up with Shayne and Catherine to find out how they felt to be working together again — and what it was like to film on board a real cruise ship...

Catherine Tyldesley and Shayne Ward interview for The Good Ship Murder

How did you react when you found out you'd be working together again on the good ship murder.

Catherine: "I was fuming! No, I'm joking!"

Shayne: "When I was leaving Coronation Street, me and Cath said 'wouldn't it be amazing to work together again? The universe is a wonderful thing, somewhere down the line, we will work together again'. When I got the job, a little while later I got a text from Cath saying 'call me' — so I knew she'd got the part of Kate Woods!"

Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) kisses Aidan Connor (Shayne Ward) by the bar in the Rovers Return on Coronation Street

Catherine: "I couldn't believe it, it was crazy! Once I'd got the part, my agent said 'listen, I just need you to know, Shayne Ward is the male lead — do you two get on?' and I was like, 'get on?! We were like the naughty kids at school who shouldn't be paired together!"

Shayne: "And it's great, because our characters in this are so far removed from Aidan and Eva — there's no way that people could compare what we'd got on Corrie to this. But I absolutely love being on screen with Cath, what you see there is a genuine friendship."

Catherine: "Yeah, same, it just worked — when you're comfortable with the person you're playing alongside, the difference is huge, and like Shayne said, the characters are worlds apart from what we did in Corrie, so that was just such a treat for us as actors."

What can you tell us about your characters in The Good Ship Murder, Kate and Jack?

Catherine: "Kate is very ambitious, she's done really well in what is very much a man's world, and she is determined to break through — ultimately her goal is to become captain some day, and her career always comes first, she's extremely driven. So when she feels attracted to Jack, which she does straight away, she really pushes against that — she's very much the ice queen, and we see her thaw throughout the series. I think the thing that scares her about Jack is that she doesn't know how to let her hair down — she's very uptight, and he brings out that spontaneous side in her that wants to have fun. We start to see a different side to Kate, and that scares and excites her at the same time."

Shayne: "Whereas Jack is a little bit the opposite, he's very relaxed! He's spent around 20 years as part of Greater Manchester CID — like Kate, very driven, very professional and always wanting to get the job done. As you will see throughout the episodes, there is something that made Jack leave the force — what that is, naturally, you'll have to wait to find out! So he decided to completely change career and pursue his first love of singing, and he becomes the resident singer for the cabaret on the ship. He's a very likeable guy, he has a great rapport with everyone on the ship and everywhere it docks. When he sees Kate, the cheeky chappie comes out of Jack — you see the tensions between them, but he's also trying to loosen her reins because she's very strict!"

First Officer Kate Woods (Catherine Tyldesley) stands on the bridge of the cruise ship, in full uniform with blazer, holding a radio that she's speaking into

What was it like filming on board a real cruise ship?

Shayne: " I think it had like 6000 passengers on board — at one point it was the Scottish school break, so it was quite a busy ship! We filmed a lot of it in Malta, so we did some doubling up, but we tried to get to as many places as we could!"

Catherine: "I think it really added to it, that it was a working ship. Obviously, logistically, that was sometimes quite difficult for the crew, but it made things all the more real — we were on there for five or six weeks, and it gave us a sense of what it is like to live on the ship. Everything is intensified, feuds become more heated, love affairs get more intense!"

Shayne: "What was great as well is that a lot of the passengers became supporting artists in the show themselves. They would be in the background — sometimes they would be on sun loungers, and sometimes you'd get the same people coming back being waiters. It was a lot of fun meeting them all!"

It sounds great! But were there any downsides to filming on a real ship?

Shayne: "Cath, are you gonna say?!"

Catherine: "I will hold my hands up! When we were travelling through the Bay of Biscay, which we did three or four times, it was so choppy. The final time, I was dressed in full uniform and I was looking at the windows — the waves were four or five metres high, there was food flying off the buffets, everyone was told to stay in their cabins — and we're still filming! I saw a member of staff and I was like, 'I'm sorry, is this normal?' and he went 'no, it's not normal, it's the worst I've ever seen!'. It was only one day, but that was particularly bad, so I did take some seasickness tablets and put a face on it, because my character would absolutely not get seasick!"

Jack (Shayne Ward) and Kate (Catherine Tyldesley) sit at a table on board the ship analysing some clues. He is wearing a dark blue shirt and stone-coloured trousers, she is in her Officer's uniform of a short-sleeved white shirt with First Officer epaulettes and a black skirt

How would you sum up the tone of the show — what sets it apart from other crime dramas?

Shayne: "We've got the most amazing backdrop of travelling around the Mediterranean, so you're going to be getting wonderful colours. Everything was a breath of fresh air. And the tone of the show is lighthearted — there's warmth and humour there. Naturally, we have to delve into the serious part of the crime, but I think it was an important decision with Channel 5 and Paul Matthew Thompson, the writer, to not make it a Line Of Duty , to make sure we don't make it too gruesome, so we keep the humour there, and it is character-based."

Catherine: "I keep saying it's got that Agatha Christie recipe, but with feather boas, sparkle, music and picture-perfect locations!"

The Good Ship Murder is an eight part series that launches on Channel 5 on Friday October 13 at 9pm, with subsequent episodes running weekly on Fridays at the same time.

An ultra-luxury cruise line wants travelers to live on its cruise ship for 4.5 months while it sails to 40 countries — for up to $1.7 million a suite

  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' 140-night 2027 world cruise would sail to 71 destinations across 40 countries.
  • Fares range from $91,500 to $840,000 per person, the latter a record for the company.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line's annual around-the-world voyages often sell out fast.

Insider Today

What would you do with $91,500? If your answer is incredibly niche and something like "move onto a ship for four months while it sails to six continents," Regent Seven Seas Cruises has you covered.

Like other luxury cruise lines, Regent Seven Seas operates annual monthslong world cruises , many of which have sold out. If you've missed the opportunity to book its previous around-the-world voyages, here's your next shot: On Wednesday, the ultra-premium cruise line announced its newest global itinerary , a 2027 cruise to 71 destinations.

The 140-night sailing, known as the "World of Splendor," is an achievement in its own right. But not for any reasons you might expect: The most expensive cabin rings in at $840,000 per person, a record for the cruise line.

The Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings brand’s 2027 plan isn’t exactly affordable compared to other comparable itineraries.

channel 5 luxury cruise ship

Luxury Crystal and premium Oceania Cruises revealed their 2026 world cruises this month. The sailings start at $84,000 and $59,700 per person, respectively.

The cheapest cabin on Regent Seven Seas' 2027 itinerary is $92,500 per person.

At least the fare also includes more than 486 excursion options, first-class flights, WiFi, and alcohol, as is typical with the all-inclusive cruise line .

To some travelers, the World of Splendor could be worth its cost.

channel 5 luxury cruise ship

After all, not everyone can set aside 4 ½ months of their life to traverse 35,668 nautical miles and six continents on a high-end ship.

At the start of 2027, the then-seven-year-old Seven Seas Splendor will depart Miami on the 40-country voyage.

From Florida, the ship would sail to South and Central American destinations, including through the Panama Canal, before heading to Los Angeles, according to a map of the itinerary.

On its way to Australia, the Splendor plans to dock at ports in Hawaii and French Polynesia.

After a few stops in cities like Sydney and Cairns, Australia, the vessel would continue east into Southeast and South Asia, bringing travelers to the likes of Indonesia and Thailand.

From there, the globetrotting guests will be off to the Middle East and Europe.

channel 5 luxury cruise ship

After a transatlantic crossing, the ship plans to dock in Bermuda before sailing north to New York, concluding the 140-day journey.

This is the first time the company has tapped its 746-guest Seven Seas Splendor for the global trip.

channel 5 luxury cruise ship

The Seven Seas Splendor is one of the cruise line's largest ships — bigger than the one it's using for its 2023, 2024, and 2025 world cruises.

A floating resort of Splendor's size has become a necessity for the company's extended voyages: Demand is high. And its around-the-world cruises tend to sell out — fast.

Splendor's initiation would also mark the first time a world cruise guest could book one of the cruise line's plushest 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite.

channel 5 luxury cruise ship

This is no dinky interior cabin. The Regent Suite has its own spa, a $200,000 Hastens mattress, original artwork from Pablo Picasso, and a private butler.

These luxuries make it the most expensive option on the ship: The cabin is $840,000 per person — about $1.7 million for two guests.

Don't worry, the 4 ½ months at sea would still be plenty lavish for all the other guests.

channel 5 luxury cruise ship

Travelers could spend their 140 days at sea gaping at the ship's $5 million art collection or luxuriating under its more than 500 crystal chandeliers.

Dinners would be just as extravagant: The Seven Seas Splendor's five restaurants serve high-end bites like lobster tempura, steak tartare with caviar, and ravioli with a Parmesan and truffle sauce.

Regent Seven Seas says the Splendor will be stocked with 13,000 pounds of lobster, 14,000 pounds of filet mignon, and 150 pounds of caviar to accommodate these meals.

channel 5 luxury cruise ship

Booze is included in the fare, which means the ship would also carry 200 varieties and 58,000 bottles of wine.

Despite their relatively hefty prices, the ultra-luxury cruise line has had no problem filling its previous around-the-world sailings.

channel 5 luxury cruise ship

Andrea DeMarco, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, told Business Insider that the company is expecting "unprecedented interest" in the 2027 world cruise.

It wouldn't be unheard of. In the past four years, Regent Seven Seas' world cruises have continuously sold out in "record time" as the company, like many other cruise lines, has continued to see growing interest in extended cruises.

5 secrets to getting a luxury cruise for less

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Luxury cruises range in price from expensive to outrageously expensive. But the value of high-end ships is clear: For the money, you get more fare inclusions, nicer accommodations, upscale dining and higher space-to-passenger and crew-to-passenger ratios than on big, mass-market ships.

Still, sometimes you want the luxe for less.

You’ll never find a cheap luxury cruise, but you can find sailings that are less expensive than others (either when sorting by the total cost or the per-night rate). You might have to compromise on sail dates or take a risk with the weather, but you can get great value by choosing the cruise less traveled.

Here are the five most affordable luxury cruises we could find, so you can save a little bit when you sail in style.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Fall Caribbean cruises

Caribbean cruises might be the bread and butter of mass-market cruise lines, but they don’t have the same prominence among the itineraries of the luxury lines. Tropical cruises on luxury lines tend to be shorter sailings, taking place in the fall and winter (rather than year-round) and often targeting younger professionals who might not have the time to take two-week vacations.

Combine those factors with a shoulder-season fall travel date (between mid-September and the week before Christmas) and you’ve got yourself a more affordable luxury cruise.

For example, Regent Seven Seas Cruises ‘ 2024-2025 Caribbean season runs from November through March. The least expensive sailing for the season takes place in early December in the travel lull between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Fares start at $3,899 per person for a weeklong round-trip cruise from Miami. A similar seven-night sailing costs $4,799 ($900 more) in February.

Shoulder-season Alaska cruises

No matter which cruise line you sail, it’s a truth universally acknowledged that the first and last Alaska sailings of the season are the most affordable. Why? Timing and weather.

The Alaska cruise season begins in late April or May and runs through September and occasionally October. These travel dates are often nonstarters for families, who wait for the summer school break to take their vacations. Even travelers not bound by school schedules sometimes shy away from these cruises because of the imperfect weather conditions.

In May, temperatures can still be chilly in Alaska, waterways in glacier areas can be clogged with ice, Alaska’s famous salmon haven’t started to run and bus service at Alaska’s famed Denali National Park hasn’t yet begun. In September and October, the temperatures start dropping — and the rain keeps falling — and attractions such as Denali begin to close.

All that said, if you’re willing to take a risk on the weather and aren’t planning a land tour up to Denali, you can score a deal on a high-end Alaska sailing during these off-peak times.

In 2025, a mid-May Alaska cruise on Silversea starts at $2,950 per person on Silver Moon (for port-to-port service — door-to-door is $4,900). The same cruise in July is priced from $4,550 for the cruise-only (or $6,400 door-to-door with transfers), making the shoulder-season cruise $1,600 less expensive. Even better, May is not as rainy as July, so you could experience sunnier days on the more affordable sailing.

Transatlantic crossings

Many travelers choose their cruise for the ports of call. Cruisers are drawn to the destinations, whether they’re checking exotic ports off their bucket list or love spending time on the beach. It’s no surprise then that longer-than-average itineraries with few to no port calls are not warmly embraced by many cruise fans (except for devoted sea-day lovers).

Because many cruise ships regularly reposition between Europe (where they spend the summer) and the Caribbean (where they spend the winter), transatlantic crossings are inevitable. To attract guests, the cruise lines add interesting onboard activities and guest lecturers to the voyage, and they lower prices. If you love relaxing sea days and would revel in spending day after day in the middle of the ocean, an ocean crossing is a surefire way to get a luxury cruise experience for less.

Small, all-inclusive line SeaDream is a solid example of how affordable transatlantic sailings can get. In 2025, SeaDream 1 will sail its last Mediterranean cruise of the season from Barcelona to Malaga, Spain, with cruise prices starting at $6,499 for an eight-night cruise. The ship then sails from Malaga across the Atlantic to San Juan, Puerto Rico. That 13-night sailing is five nights longer than the preceding cruise, but its starting price is $3,799 — a $2,700 difference.

Entry-level cabins

As a traveler chasing luxury, you’re all about the upgrade. But to get a great price on a high-end cruise ship, you might want to reconsider your aversion to booking the cheapest rooms.

Entry-level suites on the nicest ships are not the windowless closets you’ll find on some of the mass-market ships. They’re spacious cabins with either windows or private balconies and separate sleeping and sitting areas, as well as nicely appointed, reasonably sized bathrooms and often walk-in or large closets. You’ll get the same personal service, have access to the same gourmet dining and can enjoy the same ship amenities (a spa, a serene pool deck, social lounges and more) as folks in the top suites.

And you’ll pay less. For example, an entry-level suite on luxury line Seabourn ‘s Seabourn Encore is a veranda suite, measuring 246 to 302 square feet with a 68- to 83-square-foot private balcony. On a seven-night Greece and Turkey cruise departing in June 2025, prices for these rooms start at $4,299 per person. Opt for the next suite level up — a 450-square-foot penthouse suite with a 93- to 103-square-foot balcony — and you’ll pay from $7,999. That’s an increase of $3,700, all for a suite you won’t be spending much time in on this port-intensive itinerary.

Suite enclaves on big ships

Several big-ship cruise lines have entered the luxury travel space with suite enclaves that come with extra amenities, and the options can be affordable by luxury standards. These cruises are ideal for families looking for upscale accommodations combined with robust children’s programming or luxury travelers who prefer a more casual vibe or a wealth of entertainment and activity options on board.

Options include Norwegian Cruise Line ‘s The Haven, Royal Caribbean ‘s Royal Suite Class and MSC Cruises ‘ Yacht Club. Travelers who book these suites get VIP treatment compared to their shipmates. They have access to exclusive restaurants, lounges and sun decks; get priority boarding and theater seating; and might even receive more fare inclusions such as drink packages, internet access, gratuities and butler service (depending on the category booked).

Cruise fares in these top suites aren’t cheap, but they can be comparatively affordable in two ways. First, Royal Caribbean, MSC and Norwegian cruise ships typically sail shorter itineraries than true luxury lines, so you could book a short cruise to spend less on your total vacation cost. Second, while prices are comparable to the luxury lines and can skyrocket when ships start to sell out, you can sail in the ship’s top suites for what you’d pay for mid-level on a luxury ship.

For example, you can book an aft-facing penthouse (619 to 668 square feet with a 199- to 248-square-foot balcony) on a seven-night Caribbean cruise on Norwegian Encore for $4,149 per person on a Feb. 2, 2025, sailing. It comes with all of NCL’s Free at Sea inclusions (drinks, dining, Wi-Fi and shore excursion credit), as well as the services of a butler and concierge, and access to The Haven’s private lounge, restaurant and sun deck.

A weeklong Regent Seven Seas cruise to the Caribbean also in early February costs $14,049 per person for a 655-square-foot Grandeur Suite (with a 166- to 263-square-foot balcony). The cheapest veranda suite on that sailing starts at $6,599 per person — more than $2,000 over the price for a suite in Norwegian’s The Haven.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland collapsed Tuesday into the Patapsco River after it was struck by a large cargo ship.

The bridge's collapse has prompted huge emergency response, with the Baltimore City Fire Department describing the collapse as a mass-casualty incident, and rescue crews searching for seven people in the river. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency.

Baltimore  Mayor Brendon Scott  said on X that he was aware of the incident and was en route to the bridge. "Emergency personnel are on scene, and efforts are underway," he said.

The 1.6 mile, 4-lane bridge named for the author of the "Star-Spangled Banner," was the second-longest continuous-truss bridge span in the United States and third in the world.

11 ships are stuck inside the Port of Baltimore besides the Dali, officials say

From CNN's Matt Egan

Federal authorities now said there are 11 ships, in addition to the Dali cargo vessel, stuck inside the Port of Baltimore following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge .

The Transportation Department told CNN on Wednesday that it corrected the data to reflect an additional vessel stranded behind the fallen bridge.

Officials now say that the following vessels are stranded at the port:

  • Four Maritime Administration (MARAD) Ready Reserve vessels
  • Three bulk carriers
  • One vehicle carrier
  • Two general cargo ships
  • An oil/chemical tanker

This post has been updated with the latest information on the vessels in the post .

Buttigieg outlines priorities in reopening Baltimore port and offloading cargo from other ships

From CNN’s Jamiel Lynch

Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told CNN’s Phil Mattingly his agency is focused on four things following the Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore:

  • Working with the city to get the bridge back up
  • Dealing with traffic impacts
  • Reopening the port
  • Making sure the supply chain impacts are dealt with.

Buttigieg called the reopening of the port the most “acute short-term concern” especially for the workers impacted with about $2 million a day being lost in wages, he said.

Other ships stuck at the port have to be unloaded and have cargo offloaded and transported by land to get to other ports during this closure, which Buttigieg described it as a “complicated operation.”

Parties that are found accountable for the incident will be held liable, Buttigieg promised, but said that process will now slow the process of reopening the port.

“We’re going to make sure that those federal resources are put together upfront so that nothing unnecessarily delays the roadway back to normal. Workers are counting on it, people who depend on these shipments, whether they realize it or not, they’re counting on it and about 30,000 vehicles a day that go over that bridge, they’re counting on us doing everything in our power to get them back to normal,” Buttigieg said.

“It will not be quick and it will not be easy, but we’re committed to do it as long as it takes,” he said.

Baltimore Orioles will hold moment of silence for bridge workers at season opener

From CNN's Wayne Sterling

The Baltimore Orioles will honor the people who are presumed dead in the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse at the season opener on Thursday.

The team said the moment of silence will also pay tribute to the city's "brave first responders who immediately stepped into action."

The Orioles are scheduled to face the Los Angeles Angels at Camden Yards in Baltimore at 3:05 p.m. ET on Thursday.

Maryland governor and other officials to hold news conference at 5:30 p.m. ET

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Sen. Ben Cardin, Sen. Chris Van Hollen as well as officials from the Maryland State Police, US Coast Guard and the Maryland Department of Transportation will hold a news conference at 5:30 p.m. ET.

They will discuss updates on efforts underway following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Here's how the Army Corps of Engineers plan to clear the shipping channel

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

More than 1,000 US Army Corps of Engineers personnel were activated to help clear the critical shipping channel where Baltimore's Key Bridge collapsed.

Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, commander and chief of engineers, explained the team will approach the mission in three steps. Here's what they are:

  • Step 1: Get the steel truss out of a 700-foot-wide by 50-foot-deep channel, and examine what parts of the concrete are still at the bottom. "Any piece of concrete, any piece of steel on the bottom is just as much as of a hazard as that in the channel," Spellmon said. This step will allow "one-way traffic going in and out of the Port of Baltimore again," he said.
  • Step 2: Work closely with the Coast Guard to stabilize containers on top of the ship. Then the truss of the bridge that is still on top of the ship needs to be taken off "so it can be tugged to a safe part of the port," Spellmon said. "By removing the vessel, that will allow us to reopen two-way traffic."
  • Step 3: Take out the remaining 2,900 feet of steel and all the associated concrete and roadway that's at the river bottom.

"We're up to this task. We have what we need," Spellmon said.

EPA not aware of any fuel leakage after bridge collapse, spokesperson says

From CNN’s Ella Nilsen

The Dali cargo ship is seen after crashing into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26.

The Environmental Protection Agency is not aware of any fuel leakage at this point after a ship hit Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, a spokesperson said.

Earlier Wednesday at a White House briefing, Coast Guard Vice Admiral Peter Gautier said the vessel is stable but still has over 1.5 million gallons of fuel onboard.

The US Coast Guard would be the ones to determine if there is a fuel leak because they are the lead agency, EPA Region 3 spokesperson Shaun Eagan told CNN.

Some background: Members of the Coast Guard detected an oil sheen on the water near the wreckage of the Key Bridge on Tuesday. However, they have not yet determined the source of the fuel discharge, according to USCG Petty Officer Kimberly Reaves.

Maryland governor and other officials visit the scene of the bridge collapse

From CNN’s Gabe Cohen

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and several other officials were taken to the scene of the collision on Wednesday, his spokesperson told CNN.

“The governor surveyed the recovery area to further assess the damage. He along with other federal and local partners boarded a Coast Guard ship to receive a closer view and a better understanding of the ship’s path and how this incident occurred," the spokesperson said. "This is part of the Governor’s efforts to continue the strong working relationship with the Coast Guard along with our federal partners, thank first responders working on the scene, and to learn more about the events that took place,” the spokesperson added.

Other officials included Sen. Ben Cardin, Mayor Brandon Scott, Congressman David Trone, County Executive Johnny Olszewski and County Executive Steuart Pittman.

NTSB is leading the bridge collapse investigation. This is what investigators are working on

From CNN staff

Investigators are focusing on how a massive cargo ship collided into a key Baltimore bridge — and whether any preventative measures could have helped mitigate the bridge collapse.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy said. The board will try to determine what occurred onboard Dali and also look at the structure of the bridge itself.

Here's what the NTSB is working on:

  • Investigators boarded the ship overnight and retained the vessel’s recorder or black box , she said. They will use this to put together a timeline of what led to the ship hitting the bridge.
  • In this, the NTSB will look to verify reports that the ship had power issues and lost propulsion just before hitting the pillar, Homendy said.
  • A team of 24 investigators planned to return to the vessel on Wednesday to focus on collecting the perishable evidence, including pictures of the vessel, she said.
  • Investigators will also begin interviews with Dali's crew. A specialized team will determine who was controlling the vessel and who was on the ship’s bridge at the time of the crash.
  • The NTSB will additionally look at the structure of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the debris that fell into the water or onto the ship, Homendy said. It will determine whether there were other measures that “should have been in place to prevent this type of destruction from occurring," she said, including things like "dolphins" and "fenders," structures aimed at protecting the bridge.

7 Brawner Builders employees were on the bridge when it collapsed, executive tells CNN

From CNN’s Danny Freeman and Linh Tran

Seven Brawner Builder employees were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge on the night of the collapse, Brawner Builders Executive Vice President Jeffrey Pritzker told CNN.

One survived, and the other six are presumed dead.

"These were wonderful young men," he said. "They were doing a tough job. These guys were hardworking wonderful people and now they're gone."

Pritzker told CNN he doesn't know how the worker managed to survive, saying the survivor isn’t ready to talk about his experience yet but he is “very, very upset," has injuries and is suffering from stress.

"It's amazing that he did survive," Pritzker said, adding that the worker was able to swim away.

Most of the seven men have worked for Brawner Builders for years, according to Pritzker and were doing concrete remediation work, including filling potholes on the Key Bridge on the night of the collapse.

Pritzker also said the owner of Brawner Builders spent the night of the collapse praying their people would be found alive.

When it became apparent the other six employees were presumed dead, the owner and seniors in the company gathered the families together and spent the morning with them.

"We will make sure the families are well taken care of," Pritzker said.

Pritzker said the company is in the process of putting together compensation packages for the families.

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

From CNN’s Amy Simonson

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the  Apostleship of the Sea  is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Search operation ends in "heartbreaking conclusion," Maryland governor says. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 26.

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

  • The victims: Eight people were on the bridge  when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later  discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
  • The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the  ships lights flickered  and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
  • Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
  • The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into  how the bridge was built  and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been  flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
  • Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

From CNN’s Allison Gordon, Flora Charner and Amy Simonson

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate   also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

State and federal officials have not released information about the identities of any of the six missing workers.

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

From CNN's Jennifer Henderson

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

Here's what you should know about the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a massive container ship lost power and crashed into the iconic Baltimore bridge, sending people and vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River.

Six people, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead and the Coast Guard has ended its active search and rescue mission.

Here's what you should know about the historic bridge:

  • How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
  • How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
  • Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
  • How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
  • About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

From CNN's Kit Maher

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

“It was a main artery just like a blood line. It was a main artery to the other side of town. It was awesome. It beat going through the city all the time,” she said.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

"Heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," Maryland governor says as Coast Guard ended search operation

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

People look out toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge following its collapse in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

6 people presumed dead after Baltimore bridge collapse, Coast Guard says. Here's what we know

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

  • What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added.
  • Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.
  • Looking ahead: NTSB will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself, including if it was flagged for any safety deficiencies , Homendy said. The federal government has also directed its resources to help with search and rescue, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris said . Earlier, President Joe Biden said t he federal government will pay to fix the bridge.
  • The economy: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned the collapse will have a serious impact on supply chains . Until the channel is reopened, ships will likely already be changing course for other East Coast ports. Ocean carriers are already being diverted from the Port of Baltimore, where the bridge collapsed, to the Port of Virginia to “keep trade moving."

Wes Moore: no update on search and rescue efforts, vows to deploy all resources

Maryland governor Wes Moore said that there are no new updates on the search and rescue effort.

Moore added that rescuers have deployed air, land, and sea methods to help search for survivors.

“There is not a single resource that we will hold off on deploying,” Moore said during the press conference.

“This is very much still a search and rescue mission,” he added.

Evening summary

We are wrapping up our minute-by-minute updates on the Baltimore bridge collapse for this evening, but will continue to share major news updates on our homepage .

Six people remain missing in the wake of the bridge collapse, as state and national officials said a search and rescue mission by land, air and sea remained the top priority, and offered prayers and support to the families of the missing.

Local news outlets reported that eight construction workers repairing potholes on the bridge were believed to have fallen into the water, and only two have been rescued so far. One person who was hospitalized following the collapse has been released from the hospital.

The missing are “hard-working, humble men” from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. They are in their 30s and 40s and have spouses and children, another construction worker told the Baltimore Banner . Doctors from a local hospital trauma center said that it was unlikely that anyone could survive for multiple hours submerged in the harbor’s cold water.

Joe Biden called the bridge collapse “a terrible accident” , pledged financial and logistical assistance to rebuild the bridge and highlighted the importance of Baltimore’s port to the local and national economies.

The bridge collapse is expected to have a major and sustained impact on supply chains because of the importance of Baltimore’s harbor to international shipping routes.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the bridge collapse.

Maryland governor Wes Moore said quick action by officials as ship headed towards a collision with the bridge stopped additional vehicles from driving onto it, saving “innumerable” lives.

Wes Moore: quick action to stop additional cars going over bridge saved lives

Asked by reporters if there had been any vehicles on the bridge when it collapsed, Maryland governor Wes Moore said that was still under investigation.

But he said that “the quick work” of public and law enforcement officials to keep additional vehicles from driving onto the bridge as the collision unfolded “undoubtedly saved innumerable lives”.

There will be ‘major and protracted impact to supply chains ’, says Buttigieg.

This is Lois Beckett, picking up our live coverage from Los Angeles.

At this afternoon’s press conference, transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg told reporters that the bridge collapse would have a national impact, because of the amount of cargo that comes through Baltimore’s port.

“There is no question that this will be a major and protracted impact to supply chains,” Buttigieg said. “It’s too soon to offer estimates on what it will take to clear the channel and reopen the port.”

Pete Buttigieg, the secretary of transportation, called Key Bridge one of the “cathedrals of American infrastructure” , during remarks at a Tuesday afternoon press conference.

“This is no ordinary bridge. This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure … so the path to normalcy will not be easy. It will not be quick. It will not be inexpensive, but we will rebuild together.”

Buttigieg added that government officials will need to “render all of the support that is needed at the federal level”.

“The federal government will provide all of the support that [is needed] for as long as it takes,” he added.

A body has reportedly been recovered from the water as search and rescue efforts are ongoing following the Key Bridge collapse , CNN reported.

Phylicia Porter, a Baltimore city councilmember, told the network that she had heard a body was pulled from the water.

“We are hearing one body was found,” she said.

The US Coast Guard, which has been leading search efforts, has not confirmed that report.

Men missing are 'hard-working, humble', says man who reportedly knows them

Six people are still missing after the Key Bridge collapse as search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Jesus Campos, a construction worker who reportedly knows those working on the bridge, told the Baltimore Banner that they are all men from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico.

Campos added that they are all in their 30s and 40s and have spouses and children.

“They are hard-working, humble men,” Campos said.

From Baltimore Banner reporter Clara Longo de Freitas via X:

Jesus Campos, a construction worker who knows the crew, said the men were from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. They are in their 30s and 40s and have spouses and children. “They are hard-working, humble men,” he said. More updates to come for @BaltimoreBanner . pic.twitter.com/dhMoFTiU7I — clara longo de freitas (@claralfreitas) March 26, 2024

Homendy added that investigators are still working to verify if the ship lost power shortly before crashing with the Key Bridge.

On those reports, Homendy said:

We’ve heard the reports. We have been made aware of those same reports about there being a power outage. I’ve also seen statements, media releases from Singapore as well. It’s something that we take in, but something that we have to verify through our investigation that that was what was part of the contributing cause here. So too early to tell.

The NTSB will be “standing back” for the time being to allow the coast guard to continue its search and rescue.

“We chose not to board the vessel today to allow some time for the search and recovery which we did not want to interfere with,” Homendy said.

“That is first and foremost,” she said.

Homendy added that the NTSB has gathered some additional information on the accident that needs to be verified first before publication.

NTSB will investigate bridge collapse

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chair, Jennifer Homendy, confirmed that the agency will investigate the Key Bridge collapse , she said during a press conference.

The agency arrived to the scene at 6.00am on Tuesday to investigate the crash.

The US Coast Guard is also assisting with the investigation, calling the relationship between the two agencies “cooperative”.

“I want to extend our deepest sympathies to those who have been affect by today’s events,” Homendy added.

Homendy declined to comment on any potential fatalities associated with the bridge collapse, but noted that a search and rescue is still under way.

Bridge height is 'potentially lethal problem' among other concerns, says doctor

Doctors with the the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center are speaking on possible injuries that victims of the Key Bridge collapse are facing.

The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, which is apart of the University of Maryland medical system, received one patient who was injured. That person was released this afternoon.

While doctors did not speak on that specific patient’s injuries, they said that patients from the bridge collapse could face injuries from falling off the bridge.

“This is a very high bridge … the height alone [poses] a potentially lethal problem,” Dr David T Efron said during a press briefing.

Being trapped beneath metal or concrete could lead to a crushing injury.

Doctors added that patients also face the possibility of hypothermia. “[It] doesn’t take very long for someone to feel the effects of [the water’s] temperature,” Efron added.

On hypothermia, Efron added that being submerged for more than hour is “almost invariably not going to be survivable”.

The White House will also be monitoring how the Key Bridge collapse will disrupt domestic and global supply chains further , Reuters reported.

Officials have already warned that the collapsed bridge could have a significant impact on shipping out of the east coast.

The global supply chain has already faced major disruptions amid two global wars – one in Ukraine and in Gaza. The climate crisis and rising interest rates have also made shipping more expensive, costs that ultimately fall to consumers.

“This comes at a particularly difficult time,” said Bindiya Vakil, chief executive of supply chain management company Resilinc to the Washington Post . “With interest rates high, companies are looking to keep products moving.”
