In addition to glowing reviews, Seven Drunken Nights has also received praise from the families of The Dubliners. Ged Graham said, “It was very nerve-racking meeting relatives of The Dubliners, as I didn’t know how they would react. But meeting Luke Kelly’s brother, Paddy, early on during the first tour was just brilliant. He and his family have been so supportive of the show. Likewise, Barney McKenna’s sister came to see the show when we toured Ireland and was very complimentary of how we told the story. Their support means so much to everyone involved with the show.”

With the 2024 UK and Irish leg of Seven Drunken Nights being the biggest so far, the show is also set for its record year internationally, performing nearly 300 shows during 42 weeks on the road.

Such success has been a life-changing experience for Ged Graham, who said, “I can’t quite believe it. Seven Drunken Nights seems to have touched so many people who have become real fans of the show, reigniting their love of The Dubliners. It’s had a massive impact on my life, giving me the confidence to write more and be involved in many other productions, including the runaway success Fairytale of New York. It truly is a great privilege to bring the music of The Dubliners to the stage every night and keep their legacy alive.”

REVIEW: Seven Drunken Nights – The Story of the Dubliners – songs of freedom and joy

the dubliners tour 2023 uk

The music of Irish folk group The Dubliners was celebrated and brought to life by a passionate group of musicians upon the Birmingham stage.

Seven Drunken Nights – The Story of the Dubliners had the audience clapping along to each song at The Alexandra Theatre .

Pioneering Irish band The Dubliners were founded in 1962 – originally named The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group after the lead singer but later changed to The Dubliners which was inspired by James Joyce’s book – with several band member changes over the span of fifty years.

The show celebrates the influential music of The Dubliners

Sadly, the original five founding members of the band have all passed away and the last time The Dubliners performed was in 2012.

The range of topics covered in the songs of The Dubliners range from jaunty traditional Irish ballads, lively and frothy drink soaked songs and haunting sea shanties, to establishment-baiting protest songs about freedom and injustice during The Troubles.

Fans of The Dubliners who miss the music and raucous energy of the legendary musicians are in for a treat with a special show called Seven Drunken – The Story of The Dubliners which not only celebrates the music of the band but also shares the story of the group’s humble beginnings to international stardom.

The band performed Seven Drunken Nights on Top of the Pops in 1967

The influence of The Dubliners reached far and wide and amongst the many musicians who were inspired by the pioneering music of the Irish band were singers and groups such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Beatles.

The show uses a simple but powerful technique to unlock the story and songs of The Dubliners. A group of veteran musicians sing – and play various instruments – while the stage behind them recreates some of the old public house haunts of the original band while archive monochrome photographs and press clippings are projected on a screen behind the musicians which adds an atmospheric layer.

The journey of the band from their early days singing in O’Donoghue’s pub to their appearance at Top of the Pops in 1967 – where the band sung their bestselling single Seven Drunken Nights – are beautifully rendered on stage in a nostalgic and charming manner.

Archives pictures are projected onto the stage to illustrate the story of The Dubliners

Writer and director Ged Graham performs the key role of the narrator who takes the audience on the journey through the music and life of The Dubliners.

The interplay, banter, and comedic interludes all added to the pleasure of a very appreciative audience at a packed out Alexandra Theatre.

The cast and crew of this show bring experience, passion and professionalism, and work in such unison that within minutes of appearing on stage they captured the hearts and minds of the audience.

Ged Graham and his grandson Adam Evans who hails from Birmingham

Ged Graham not only plays the narrator but he also sings and plays guitar and 5 string banjo while his grandson Adam Evans, who hails from Birmingham, is a ball of fire and energy on guitar and vocals.

Fiddle players Nic Goode and Fred Holden displayed complete mastery of their instruments and were so in tune with the melodies they plucked that they danced and jigged along to the music as if possessed by some feral force. Their musicianship was so infectious that despite his age Graham – who is in his 70’s – got up and tapped along to the melodic flow of the fiddles and guitars.

Multi-instrumentalist Tim Howard employed his skills like a wizard and kept the momentum of the show flowing while Danny Muldoon’s rich and creamy vocals brought a beautiful texture to the music.

The show is full of toe-tapping music

Many classic songs were performed including Belle of Belfast City, Dirty Old Town, The Banks of the Rose, Star of the County Down, and a truly heartfelt The Town I Love So Well which was sung as a poignant tribute to founding band member Luke Kelly who tragically passed aged 43 in 1984 after a long illness.

On the surface the concept of the show may resemble a  jukebox musical performed by a talented tribute act but the material and committed performances reveal something deeper, sincere and unique. This show is an education for newcomers, and a powerful reminder for fans of the original group, about the powerful legacy of The Dubliners whose music continues to speak to us and inspire us in dark and divisive times.

This show uses the songs and story of The Dubliners to demonstrate how the spellbinding magic of music can lift up the human spirit.

A thrilling toe-tapping, hip-shaking, energy soaked show.

Live reviews

Swaying to the soulful lyrics of ‘Four Green Fields’ must be the most memorable part of seeing The Dubliners perform. Ronnie Drew’s haunting vocals singing about ‘war and death’ created a very poignant and moving atmosphere which sparked my obsession with this band.

The Dubliners went through a few line-up changes since their formation in 1962 and sadly Ronnie Drew, the lead vocalist, is no longer with us. However, many beautiful recordings and documentation of live gigs are available to watch on Youtube – the live performance of their 1984 gig is particularly brilliant. Throughout their time, (1962-2012), the band remained true to their Irish folk roots - using their guitars, mandolins and banjos to give them a signature folk sound - and what is truly brilliant about watching The Dubliners is the mix of emotions that the music can bring out in you. Slower songs are very emotional and people in the audience can be seen getting teary-eyed listening to the lyrics. On the other hand, faster songs produce this buoyant, gleeful atmosphere that not only is mind-blowing to experience but also jumps off the screen if you are watching this band on Youtube.

The bad news is that we will never again be able to watch The Dubliners perform live as they did in the 60s, 70s or 80s. However, former Dubliners members Sean Cannon and Eamonn Campbell have joined up with Patsy Watchorn and Gerry O’Connor to create ‘The Dublin Legends’ which continues in the footsteps of The Dubliners. So get online and look up ‘The Dublin Legends’ – they are touring in 2015 – and enjoy the Irish folk music of today which has been honed by the legacy of The Dubliners.

A really tight frame until Williams tries to play aggressive and go for a difficult red.

A narrow miss sets O'Sullivan up and allows the Rocket to do what he does best - get points on the board.

The Midlands potter is now leading the table 53-5. Williams needs a special visit.

O’Sullivan 0-1 Williams

A foul opens the scoring in Frame two as Williams pots the white after missing a difficult red.

A win for Williams in the opening frame.

It wad assured and professional when he stepped up to the table - picking off his shots one by one.

O'Sullivan 0-0 Williams

O'Sullivan lets Williams visit the table and the Welshman takes FULL advantage.

A visit of 66 puts him in the driving seat as he sets up a difficult red shot for Ronnie.

An opening 29 from O'Sullivan before sitting down to let Williams have a go.

In goes a red for Williams and both players are going for it.

Up and running

A stunning long red from Ronnie O'Sullivan gets the scoring underway.

The Manchester crowd applaud the first pot of the day - we're in for a treat.

“Enjoy the day off. Enjoy being in Manchester.

“I want to get myself a little massage. Maybe get some coaching lessons off Tony Knowles!"

Williams ready to "attack" O'Sullivan

Mark Williams isn't going to take it easy on his old rival Ronnie O'Sullivan when the pair face off in the final today.

Speaking ahead of the clash Williams explained how he plans to approach the match.

He said: "I'm just going to enjoy it. How many more times is this going to happen?

"I couldn't pick a better player to play in a final. I'm going to attack and try my best.

"I know I haven't played Ronnie in a final for a long time but that's because he keeps beating me before the final!"

Fast approaching

We are just over two hours away from today's final getting underway.

Both Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Williams put on dominant displays in the semi-final.

Who will wind up victorious today?

Ronnie's record hunt

This afternoon's clash with Mark Williams will be the third time that Ronnie O'Sullivan has reached the final of the Tour Championship since its conception in 2019.

The Rocket has now equalled the record for the number of finals reached which is also held by Aussie potter Neil Robertson.

Robertson currently holds the record for the most wins too (2), but an O'Sullivan victory this evening would mean he would also equal that record after his previous win in 2019.

As for Mark Williams it's a debut appearance in the final of this competition.

Ronnie's mental health battle

Ronnie O'Sullivan has opened up about his mental health and revealed he is speaking to his psychiatrist in order to work on his mental state.

I've just got to commit to it [speaking to a psychiatrist] now for a good year to try to get myself out of this sort of hole I've got myself in mentally with the obsession of the game, tinkering. I know I'm never going to stop tinkering, but I have to somehow get my head strong enough to be able to deal with it and not go too deep into that horrible murky world that it is. Every sportsman - maybe golfers, tennis players, snooker players - I suppose we all do it, but I went so deep into that it's like detoxing myself from it. It kind of felt like I've had the yips in a way - mentally, physically - it feels like you get scared to even want to go and play. That's not a nice place to be, so I've got nothing left to do other than to try to get myself mentally out of it and hopefully my game will start to flow again, maybe. Ronnie O'Sullivan ITV4

How they got here

Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Williams will do battle in the Tour Championship final today.

The pair begin their match this afternoon before bringing it to a conclusion later this evening.

Here's how both stars earned their spot in the final...

RONNIE O'SULLIVAN R1 - Bye QF - Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-2 Ali Carter SF - Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-7 Gary Wilson

MARK WILLIAMS R1 - Mark Williams 10-9 Tom Ford QF - Mark Williams 10-4 Judd Trump SF - Mark Williams 10-5 Mark Allen

How to watch today's final

Ronnie O'Sullivan will take on Mark Williams in the final of the Tour Championship today.

The match will get underway from 1pm BST with the first eight frames being played, then the remainder of the final will be finished from 7pm.

You can watch all the action on ITV4 or stay right here for SunSport's ball-by-ball coverage from Manchester.

Williams reacts to semi-final triumph

He said post match: "I was a bit worried at 9-5. I had a couple of chances to win 9-1 or 9-2.

"Mark played really well after that. If it had gone 9-6 then I was really under it. But the break I made in the last frame was as good as any I made in the match, it's nice to know I've still got that bottle.

"In the first session my safety was really solid, my breaks and long potting were good.

"I could have easily had six or seven centuries during the match. He had one chance at 5-0 when he missed a tricky blue, apart from that in a lot of frames he was never in them because I tied him up in knots.

"At the end he wished me the best of luck in the final. Mark is more than capable of winning the world title, as for me, who knows? That's for other people to say.

"I know I haven't played Ronnie in a final for a long time but that's because he keeps beating me before the final!"

Williams' brilliant side hustle

Mark Williams has been world champion three times.

But, he also has a brilliant side hustle.

Ronnie's 'poo shirt' explained.

Ronnie O'Sullivan has caused a stir with his 'baby-poo' shirt.

But why's he wearing it?

the dubliners tour 2023 uk

O’Sullivan ends ‘baby-poo’ debate as he reveals what colour his shirt really was

Ronnie's on a roll.

Ronnie O'Sullivan has had his most successful season having earned £1.16million and could bag another six-figures if he wins the Tour Championship.

The 48-year-old has won five major tournaments this term - the second time in his 32-year career.

This includes winning the UK Championship in York,  the Masters  in  London  and World Masters of  Snooker  in  Saudi Arabia  – the three events individually had £250,000 winners’ cheques.

And with two events still to play O'Sullivan could see his prize fund skyrocket.

Here is the full breakdown of what's on offer, when it comes to earnings at the Tour Championship.

Despite making it to the final, Mark Williams has revealed he loves playing pool and is focusing on that more.

"I probably enjoy playing Chinese 8 ball rather than snooker, to be honest.

"I just want to play more, I’d like to play more tournaments this year to see if I can get any better."

He then went on to add: "I’m definitely not retiring, but a lot more pool is on the horizon for me."

Williams reacts

I did a great break there really [to win match]. "As good as any I did in the whole match. I just knew I had to make a one-frame visit the way the match was going. "I try to get my practice at the venues. I've been playing like that all season. Some of the people have played unbelievable snooker against me this season. "If I had a pick to play in the final, it would be O'Sullivan. He's the best player by a mile at a packed venue." Mark Williams ITV Sport
