The Keukenhof windmill

Nederlands Deutsch

The windmill of Keukenhof flower park is one of the most photographed windmills in the Netherlands. In spring, you can take unique photos of the tulips and this windmill. The windmill is located in Keukenhof and can only be visited with a ticket for the flower park .

About the Keukenhof windmill

The mill with tulip fields in front, opening hours, ticket price, keukenhof mill in combination with a cycle route.

In the middle of Keukenhof flower park lies the famous Keukenhof windmill. This mill is one of the most photographed mills in the Netherlands. The windmill in Keukenhof is a so-called tower mill and was built in Scharmer in 1892. The windmill was originally a ground-sailer and functioned as a polder windmill. In 1975, the windmill was moved to the grounds of Keukenhof. The flower park received the windmill as a gift from the Holland-America Line. The windmill is now used as an ornamental object. The mill can turn and has sails of 17.90 metres.

Although the windmill makes for beautiful pictures from the Keukenhof, it is also highly recommended to view the windmill from the flower fields.

The windmill is open during the Keukenhof opening days. In 2024 this will be from Thursday 21 March to Sunday 12 May .

The windmill is located in Keukenhof flower park. If you have a ticket for Keukenhof, you can also visit the windmill. Keukenhof has limited capacity in 2024. Check the availability below and book your visit now

The Keukenhof windmill is also often photographed from the tulip fields. Various cycle routes pass the tulip fields from where the Keukenhof windmill can be seen. These are the following routes:

  • Tulip route | 15 kilometres
  • Dutch Flower Route | 35 kilometres
  • Blue Keukenhof cycle route | 5 kilometres
  • Green Keukenhof bike route | 15 kilometres
  • Red Keukenhof cycle route | 25 kilometres

Getting there

Public transport, escape to the country.

This over 10 hour long tour will take you from the lively city centre of Amsterdam to the beautiful countryside outside the city. Travel from Amsterdam Central Station to the open air museum of Zaanse Schans to see and visit the windmills there before traveling on to Volendam and Marken to discover these traditional fishing villages and some of the products created there. Then get back on the bus to head south, to the Keukenhof gardens. The order of the tour can change.

An open-air museum

A visit to Zaanse Schans means you can get your fill of historical windmills. Over ten windmills line the banks of the Zaan river and the area around them is free for you to wonder around in as it really is an open-air museum. Zaanse Schans is one of the best places to see windmills in Holland.

Volendam is a typical Dutch fishing village and taking a walk along De Dijk and through the harbour area will not disappoint. Here you will visit the Cheese Factory to learn more about how the Dutch make cheese and have a little taste as well. If you are staying in town for lunch, we recommend the freshly caught fish.

Next is the village of Marken, a former island in the Markermeer, now a peninsula. You'll travel between Marken and Volendam by boat, with a scenic, 30 minutes trip across the IJsselmeer. On Marken you’ll visit a traditional clog, or wooden shoe, maker where clogs are still made according to a 100-year-old tradition with steam powered tools. They are surprisingly comfortable as you will be able to try for yourself.

The most beautiful garden in the world

At Keukenhof you can wander along 15 kilometres of footpaths surrounded by more than seven million flowers. The Keukenhof Gardens in the Netherlands are world-famous, open less than two months a year and the largest flower gardens in all of Europe.

You’ll have several hours to explore the gardens on your own. You can discover a world full of colourful and fragrant flower fields, including 800 different species of tulips, crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths and many more in inspirational themed gardens, flower parades and beautiful flower shows. The millions of flower bulbs are planted by hand every year.

Absolutely gorgeous. The bus ride was great both picking up and dropping off. Was an absolutely beautiful tulip garden.

So many beautiful tulips 🌷

We were so pleased we did this trip as originally we were planning on just seeing the tulip fields. The gardens are so well maintained and the variety of colours is phenomenal. There are different indoor flower displays, one with orchids. On the way there and back the coach driver takes you past lots of tulip fields and even drives slowly so you can get pictures.

Absolutely Stunning! 🌷🌷🌷

One of the most beautiful flower gardens in the world. The tour guide was insightful and fun! Highly Recommend to anyone! 🌷

Tulip experience

This experience is only available from March to mid-May. The bus ride is 45 min long. The tulip experience is a visit to a generational family run tulip farm with a barn like museum and tulip fields. Then there is a 15 min ride to the Keukenhof gardens for several hours. It was lovely to see and we really enjoyed it. The peak is more in March-April so we did miss the spectacular fields of different colors but still enjoyed it!

A garden worth visiting

One of the most beautiful gardens I have visited- so colourful and such a variety of tulips - well laid out and easy to walk around

Connector814643

What a wonderful day !

Absolutely beautiful .Amazing number of varieties of tulips . Bus trip -good service and ample time to peruse the flowers and grounds.

Guided tour to Keukenhof

Bought a tour guided with them to Keukenhof and found the experience really pleasant. We had to line up to exchange the ticket but it was pretty fast. We left sharply on time, be sure you are there sometime before as they can leave a few minutes before the booked time and pay attention on the guides taking you to the bus they can easily "disappear". Carolina, our guide, was the best one and incredible knowledgeable about explaining everything about the garden's history, she spoke English, Spanish and French fluently and we are still intrigued where she is from, anyways, the tour was well organised and worth it, the bus left the gardens exactly the agreed time and Carolina , again, even made funny jokes and told a little bit more history.

Louise A Smith

Absolute must experience!

After years of wanting to visit this magnificent place, it far exceeded my expectations! I will cherish the experience forever. The colors jump out at you. It's like seeing the beauty for the first time!

Definitely worth the time and money.

The bus was comfortable and clean. The tour guide was informative. Although, at times she was a bit hard to understand. Keukenhof was worth the stop. It’s simply beautiful. The pictures do not capture the grandeur of the grounds. The visit to the Windmills was more fascinating and fun than we imagined. The history, significance and quaintness of the site do not disappoint.

Recomiendo.

Very entertaining and informative experience.

It was one of the best day trips I have ever taken. The bus driver, Stefan and guide, Tony were knowledgable and entertaining - plenty of life music on this bus. It was a full day and they accommodated me when I couldn’t go into one windmill due to an allergy. Cannot recommend them high enough. We came back and booked another trip with this company straight away.

Relaxing and fun

Was a good day out and enjoyed it. Were not at the one place for too long either which is good because some other tours leave you at the one spot for too long and you end up waiting around.

Wonderful Experience

Great experience and very helpful guide by Pia, Mercedez and Stef the bus driver (comedian). We took the 4dec23 morning trip

Mr & Mrs Miners

Fascinating Tour

Our team Vladimir (the driver) and Carolina and Charley were amazing. Friendly, funny and informative. I learnt a lot on this trip !! The planned visits and demonstrations from the windmill, cheese factory, waffle making and clog making were all well presented and fascinating. The whole trip was relaxed and unlike tours i have been on in different countries, we had plenty of time at each stop to eat, drink, browse and take the sights in. I would 100% definitely recommend and use again.

Fun day in windmill country

Great tour, made even more enjoyable by the bus driver Steve who entertained us throughout the day. Highly recommend!

LadyfromChurwell

Highly recommended.

Very good trip. Did what it said it would do. Comfy coach, lovely guides, interesting places to visit. It was cold and blustery but that didn't dampen our spirits. Loved the boat trip. The windmill was amazing. We enjoyed the cheese tasting and the demonstration. The clog factory was good as was the demonstration. The only negative was the waiting around for half an hour before we set off. Didn't understand why that was necessary especially as there was not where to sit out of the cold wind.

The outskirts of amsterdam guided tour

Cheese demonstration, Clog making with steam engine, and Peanut/Paint oil and chalk making windmill village was very educational and delightful. I'd like to say the windmill village was beautiful and the food recommended by our tour guide (Ian, I believe) at volendam was fantastic. The boat ride over to marked was amazing as well. 10 out of 10!

The tour and the places we went were great, I loved Volendam and Marken the most. The tour guide however was very strict about time and the tour itself was rushed. The guide walked off leaving the rest of the group in the dust even though people told her she was walking too fast and they couldn't keep up. She was constantly so far ahead of the group that people were asking where did she go. I'm not sure if the audio on the bus was having issues or not but it seemed to randomly cut out. If you take the 245 tour and chose the all inclusive option for the boat ride make sure to bring a hat, jacket, and gloves as it gets very windy and cold on the outer decks.

Fast paced tour

This day trip offered a lot. It was packed so full with attractions that the time allotted for each stop did not provide enough time to do much tourist exploration in the little shops. I gave it 4 stars only because I wish I had time to go in and out of the many shops at both stops. This was not possible. The windmills, clog making, and cheese factory were very interesting. The guides, Adrianna, Frankie and particularly Xiaoli were friendly, helpful, humorous and made the time spent together enjoyable. I could have spent 2hrs on the island of Volendam but only had time for a quick lunch and very brief visit to a shop next to the restaurant before having to leave. It felt very rushed. Time to eat and then explore the many shops in Volendam would have been perfect.

We booked to see the windmills etc, what a great afternoon we had! With Steff and Astrid we had a fab time. We would definitely recommend

Gita nelle campagne olandesi

Piccolo villaggio molto ordinato. Tanti negozietti e ristoranti. Mangiato un ottimo fish and Chips. Ottimo per mezza giornata fuori porta

Super tour e super guida

Super Super tour. Straconsigliato.

Romantische Promenade.

  • SallyKatharine 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An unforgettable experience This is a wonderful visit, if you time it right and if you're lucky with the weather. Going on the coach means you can take as much time as you want, and go back when you're tired. The gardens are absolutely amazing. World-class! Read more Written April 13, 2024

  • Dawn L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A feast for your senses. This was our 2nd visit to Keukenhof (we also visited last year) and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Even though we visited earlier this year than last there were still plenty of beautiful flowers that were blooming. It is definitely a feast for your senses. The beautiful coloured flowers all around the site combined with the strong, sweet scent of the hyacinths that filled the air while the birds chirped happily around us. It really is a calming and happy place to be. We saw plenty on tulips and other varieties of flowers. We took our own food as we thought this was the easiest and cheapest option. There are benches around the park which you can sit on and enjoy your lunch. We’d easily pre-booked our tickets and found the building and coach easily. We enjoyed the flexibility of this tour compared with last year as we didn’t have a set time that we needed to get round the park in. (You just needed to make sure you didn’t miss the last bus) Even though I’ve been here twice I would definitely consider returning in the future. The photos don’t really do this place justice you have to experience it to get the full effect. Read more Written April 6, 2024
  • landonvt 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Just as described! It’s a fantastic experience. No frills or extra junk that we didn’t need or want to pay for. We simply made a reservation, went to the This is Holland facility on our chosen day, showed them our reservation, got our tickets and passes and an explanation of everything, and hopped on board to go. Our stroller was stowed us in the bus so we were able to easily retrieve it when we arrived. They pulled up to an easy to find bus parking lot, let us out, and answered our last minute questions as we headed in. When we were done and ready to head back, we simply returned to the location where we were dropped off, hopped on board, and were carried back once the bus filled up. Great experience, saved us the hassle of trying to figure out how to get there, highly recommend it Read more Written April 6, 2024

  • Stuart T 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic visit to Keukenhof The pickup point was easy to find taking the free ferry from behind Amsterdam central station. Shuttle bus clean and on time and transfer took about 45 minutes. The gardens themselves are extensive and beautifully laid out, so you probably need 2-3 hours to do it justice. The tulips were just coming into flower and also the flowering trees (cherry and magnolia in particular) were outstanding. Bus back to Amsterdam was on time and very pleasant journey back. • bulldogspikesmom 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amsterdam to Dunkirk with ease Although I had tried to arrange transportation while still at home for the three 75-year olds who were traveling together, it wasn't until we arrived in Amsterdam that I was able to find Daytrip, a business based in England which provides transportation between cities in many countries around the world. About 6:30 pm, I filled out an online form, saying that we wanted to go from Amsterdam to Dunkirk the following day, leaving our hotel about 9:30 am. I received prompt replay within a few minutes, saying that they're trying to find a driver for and would let me know within a few hours, whether or not they could find one. (If we couldn't find a driver, we would have had to take the train, which involved first taking the train from Amsterdam to Brussels, changing transfer Dunkirk, with an intermediate stop and change of trains before Dunkirk - a process which would have taken about 10 hours.) About an hour later I received a message from Daytrip saying that they had found driver for us, giving his name and car license number and saying the he would be at our hotel at 9:30! It was pouring rain the next morning, but he arrived promptly at 9:30, having driven from Brussels to pick us up! Our driver was very friendly, talking about interesting things along the way and an excellent driver, so we all relaxed during the trip. In a little over 3 hours, he delivered us safely to our hotel in Dunkirk, getting our trip off to a wonderful start. We arrived rested, dry ( it rained all the way) and ready to enjoy our visit to Dunkirk - none of which would have been possible if we'd had to take the train! I highly recommending Daytrip whenever possible. They communicate promptly and do their best to fill trip requests. In fact, we hired them again during our trip - this time to take us from Neupoort to Brussels - another smooth, easy, convenient trip that would have been much more difficult otherwise. Their trip fees are very reasonable and are paid via credit card before the trip, which is very convenient. Give them a try! Read more Written October 15, 2023

Byeong Hun An hangs on to leaders’ coattails after another tough Masters day

Korea’s Byeong Hun An was hanging on to dear life and anything that he could, including his cap, on another wind-swept day at the Masters Tournament on Friday. A battling one-over 73 in the second round meant he also found himself hanging onto the co-leader's coattails, with the coveted green jacket firmly in his sights.

The 32-year-old produced two wonderful birdies late in his round at Augusta National to stay in the title fight at the year’s first major and will enter the weekend five shots back of Scottie Scheffler (72), Max Homa (71) and Bryson Dechambeau (73), who lead on 6-under.

“ I thought yesterday was hard until I played it today, and it felt harder,” said An, who stands at 1-under with six others. “I think the wind was a little stronger today. My hat wasn't staying on my head for a couple of the holes.”

Another tough day saw winds blowing from between 30-35 mph, with gusts of up to 40 mph. Only eight players returned under par scores, while eight others shot 80 or worse, including reigning FedExCup champion Viktor Hovland who shot an 81 to be amongst the high-profile names to miss the halfway cut at 6-over.

It got so hard that An, who is making his fifth Masters start and his first since 2020, felt he could have easily made bogeys in each of his back nine holes, especially when he had three in a row from the ninth. A combination of measured shots and some lucky bounces saw him make birdie on the par-5 13th hole and the par-3 16th hole, where he miraculously chipped in from 33 yards off an awkward lie.

“The back nine got very tricky. I got very lucky on a few shots, lucky bounces here and there, and then I don't know how I shot even par on the back. That's pretty impressive,” said An, whose best Masters finish was T33 in 2017.

“It's not a joy at all. It's not fun playing in these conditions. It's definitely a battle out there. It's a grind. There's no easy holes. I could have made eight, nine bogeys in a row on the back nine, not because I was playing poorly but just the conditions. Somehow I scrambled well to shoot even par on the back.”

An is still seeking a first PGA TOUR victory, let alone a major win where only two Asian male golfers, Y.E. Yang (2009 PGA Championship), and Hideki Matsuyama (2021 Masters Tournament), have achieved the feat. He knows he needs to have more trust in his golf swing, although conditions are forecasted to be a touch better over the weekend.

“You try to make the best swing you can. I wasn't able to do it today. I hit some poor shots out there all because the wind got into my head a little bit before I hit it,” said An, who has three top-10s this season and currently ranks seventh on the FedExCup standings.

“Just have to hit a shot and accept every outcome that you get out of this wind and move on to the next hole because it's such a difficult golf course to scramble around. I felt like I did that pretty good today.”

Matsuyama (74) and An’s compatriots, Tom Kim (78) and Si Woo Kim (76), made the 36-hole cut right on the number while Masters debutant Ryo Hisatsune (78) and Sungaje Im of Korea (74) failed to advance into the weekend.
