Our Theatre Guide covers all of the top theatre shows in London, where you can find the matinee times for all West End shows.
Evening performances of shows in the West End usually start at 19:30, with doors opening at theatres from 18:30 onward. There can be some variations on this, so it is best to check your ticket for earlier or later start times.
London and West End shows vary on length, depending whether it is a play or musical, or if it has an interval. Standard running time can be from 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes, so it is best to check the information on running times for the specific show you have booked.
Intervals are usually between 15 and 20 minutes.
Views are different depending on where you sit in a London theatre. The Stalls are usually on the ground floor, and offer the best, closest views of the stage.
The Dress Circle or Royal Circle is usually the middle level, or top level in smaller theatres, and gives you a top-down view of the stage, which is great for musicals and big dance numbers. Boxes are usually located at Dress Circle height.
The Grand Circle is typically the highest tier in the theatre, but you can usually access seats at great prices. Be aware that legroom may be limited in these sections.
Most London theatres will allow one small bag to place under your seat. You will be advised not to bring large bags to venues, but each theatre will have its own policy. If you are planning on bringing more than a rucksack or handbag, it is best to check with the theatre you are visiting.
London’s West End is located in central London, west of the City of London and generally makes up the areas around Leicester Square and Covent Garden. There are over 39 theatres in the West End, located on various streets across the city.
The most famous street is Shaftesbury Avenue, with the Apollo Theatre, Lyric Theatre, Gielgud Theatre, Sondheim Theatre, home to Les Misérables , and Magic Mike Live’s Hippodrome Casino Theatre all on one street, with the Piccadilly Theatre and Criterion Theatre nearby at Piccadilly Circus.
In Covent Garden is the Duke of York’s Theatre, Noël Coward Theatre, Gillian Lynne Theatre, the Lyceum Theatre, which is home to Disney’s The Lion King , plus TINA’s Aldwych Theatre and the Novello Theatre with MAMMA MIA! . Further theatres include the London Coliseum, Fortune Theatre, Duchess Theatre, Trafalgar Theatre, and the West End’s oldest theatre, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, which houses Disney’s Frozen The Musical until September 2024. Matilda The Musical also plays at Cambridge Theatre in Seven Dials.
In Leicester Square you can find the Prince of Wales Theatre, home to The Book of Mormon , the Garrick Theatre, the Arts Theatre, Wyndham’s Theatre, St Martin’s Theatre, the Ambassadors Theatre and Palace Theatre, hosting Harry Potter and the Cursed Child .
There are also multiple theatres on The Strand, which is close by to Charing Cross and Embankment. SIX The Musical plays at the Vaudeville Theatre, with the Adelphi Theatre and Savoy Theatre nearby. The Playhouse Theatre, currently The Kit Kat Club , is located on Embankment.
Further afield you can find Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre and Hamilton at Victoria Palace Theatre, near to Victoria Station, and The London Palladium on Argyll Street, close to Oxford Circus. Haymarket features The Phantom of the Opera’s His Majesty’s Theatre, plus Theatre Royal Haymarket and the Harold Pinter Theatre.
More theatre just outside of the West End include the Barbican Theatre at Barbican, the National Theatre and The Old Vic near Waterloo, plus Phoenix Theatre, Prince Edward Theatre, Dominion Theatre, Shaftesbury Theatre and @sohoplace near Soho and Tottenham Court Road. The Bridge Theatre is located at London Bridge.
Most London theatres offer disabled and access-friendly facilities. All access bookings must be made directly with the theatre.

Filter by month, frequently asked questions, what are the best shows in london.
London has so many great shows in the West End and beyond. Check out our guides to the top 10 plays and the top 10 musicals to see.
How far in advance should I purchase London theatre tickets?
If you're looking to purchase seats in a specific section or at a specific price point, we recommend booking tickets early before your desired seats sell out. However, tickets to London shows are available up to the day of the show, so you can plan a last-minute theatre trip if you choose. Not all performances will have day-of availability, however, and ticket options might be limited.
What's the best day to see a musical or play in London?
Weeknights are great days to see London shows, as there are fewer tourists and therefore generally more availability and ticket price options, even last-minute. However, if you're looking to make a full day of your London theatre trip and/or are traveling with kids, a weekend is the best day to go, as most shows have matinee and evening performances.
How early should I arrive to the theatre?
We recommend arriving to the theatre approximately 30 minutes before showtime. This will give you time to enter the theatre (and potentially beat the crowds queuing to get in), use the bathroom, buy concessions and merchandise, and find your seat without rushing before curtain.
What should I wear to the theatre?
London theatres have no specific dress code; the most important thing is to wear something you'll be comfortable sitting in for a few hours. It is best to refrain, if possible, from wearing bulky layers (as there isn't much storage space for them in theatre seats) and noisy accessories.
Are London theatres open every day of the week?
Most theatres are closed one day a week; Monday and Sunday are the most common days for theatres to be closed. Each show operates on a slightly different schedule, though, so there is theatre going on in London seven days a week.

About the show
The show will see acclaimed lyricist Tim Rice reflect on his illustrious career at the heart of musical theatre, sharing anecdotes behind the songs – the hits and the misses along with stories of his life and live performances from the wonderful catalogue of songs that are synonymous with his name and that of his collaborators.
Musical accompaniment will be from an array of the UK’s leading West End singers and musicians led by Musical Director Duncan Waugh.
With a show packed full of songs including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina (Evita), Any Dream Will Do (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat), A Whole New World (Aladdin) Can You Feel The Love Tonight (The Lion King), I Don’t Know How To Love Him (Jesus Christ Superstar) , Circle of Life (The Lion King), Chess, Hakuna Matata (The Lion King) Another Suitcase in Another Hall (Evita), I Know Him So Well (Chess), All Time High (Octopussy), Must Love Me (Evita), and A Night In Bangkok (Chess), My Life In Musicals is an absolute must for fans of musical theatre and brilliant music.
Regarded by many as one of the world’s greatest lyricists, Tim Rice commented: “ My Life in Musicals is a show in which I reveal all (well, nearly all) of the secrets behind the creation of some of the best-known songs featuring my lyrics. I have had the good fortune to work with some of the greatest composers of our time, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, Elton John, and Alan Menken, without whose wonderful melodies I’d be at home watching television.
“You’ll know quite a few of the songs – and will therefore be relieved to hear I won’t be singing them. All musical aspects of the show I hand over to the outstanding Duncan Waugh Band and West End Singers. There will be plenty of stops in between the hits during which I’ll tell you how they happened and, in some cases, nearly didn’t. Actually, I might sing a little – but not Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.”

GISELLE: REMIX Tickets
About GISELLE: REMIX
Hot off its instant sell-out premiere at the Royal Opera House, GISELLE: REMIX and its anarchic, punk-reimagining of the classic ballet returns to subvert this timeless story of love, loss, revenge, redemption and forgiveness.
In this queer, lip-sync cabaret retelling, Giselle is a hopeless romantic, raised on a diet of Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore 1990's rom-coms, who comes to realise that the real world of queer sex, hook-ups and heartbreak is a far cry from Hollywood’s happily-ever-after.
What follows is a journey through shame, assimilation, anger, acceptance and - finally – liberation and joy. All performed to a soundtrack of queer icons ranging from Judy to SOPHIE.
A mixture of live performance art meets warehouse cabaret meets pop concert extravaganza. It’s Giselle like you’ve never seen it before.
From the minds of Pleasance Associate Artist and former Roundhouse Resident Artist, Jack Sears (@jackqueers, Parris is Dreaming, The Bower, Saintmaking), and Royal Ballet Soloist, Hannah Grennell (@hannahjayneg, Woolf Works, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty), comes an evening of cabaret excellence, theatrical divinity, staggering choreography and jaw-dropping lip-syncs, created in collaboration with dancers from The Royal Ballet.
