The word ‘Darjeeling’ comes from the Tibetan words, ‘Dorje’ meaning thunderbolt and ‘ling’ meaning land. Thus, Darjeeling is referred to as the land of the thunderbolt. Before being acquired by the East India Company in 1835, Darjeeling was a part of Sikkim and Nepal for a while. Initially, the city was ruled by the kings of Sikkim, who were engaged in wars against the Gorkhas, or the native warriors clan. After Captain Lloyd of the British government was stationed in the area, he was so much attracted by the beauty of the hills that he immediately proposed to build a sanatorium. Thus, started the colonial influence in Darjeeling. Serving as the summer retreat of the British in the mid-19th century, Darjeeling grew in importance.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN DARJEELING

Mall Road Darjeelingor Chow Rasta is snuggled in the heart of this famous Indian hill station. Located on top of the Nehru Road, it is a flat stretch of land where four main roads of the Darjeeling town meet. The Mall is the town center and also the main hub of social activities. Mall Road is the best place to get glimpses of the local life and delve into the real vibes of the town. In the morning, you can come to this place, take a seat and enjoy the stunning views of surrounding mountain peaks and valleys. You should take a walk on the Mall Road to explore this place in a possible way. On a clear day, you can have a glimpse of the gorgeous Mount Kanchenjunga from all corners of the Mall Road.

The most fun on Tiger hill Darjeeling is its climbing. It is the highest peak of Darjeeling with a height of 8482 feet. With this height, the entire Darjeeling city looks so mesmerizing. Ghoom Monastery

In Darjeeling, situated at a height of about 8,000 feet is the old Ghoom Monastery. It is the oldest Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in the city of Darjeeling. The monastery was established by Lama Sherab Gyatso in the year 1850. The Ghoom Monastery is also called as Yiga Choeling Gompa. The Ghoom monastery Darjeeling is a part of the Yellow Hat sect which is called Gelupka. Where the 'Coming Buddha' or 'Maitreya Buddha' is worshiped.

Places to visit near the Ghoom Monastery

There is a Maa Kali Temple on top of the hill above the monastery. Tourists can visit the temple and offer their prayers on the full moon day and every fifteenth day of the month according to the Tibetan calendar. Tourists can also see bells, ornate thangka scrolls as well as drums inside the Gompa.

Close to the Ghoom Monastery is another monastery called Samten Choling Monastery. Both the monasteries are together called as the Ghoom monastery. So, if you want to either of the monasteries you have to be precise in locating the monastery you want to visit.

Geography Of Darjeeling

Darjeeling is a small city located in the Darjeeling Himalayan hill region of the Eastern Himalaya range, on the north-western part of the Indian State of West Bengal. Darjeeling serves as the administrative headquarters of the Darjeeling district and the principal town of the Darjeeling Sadar subdivision. Geographically, the Darjeeling district has the shape of an irregular triangle, with its northern portion forming a part of the Great Himalayas , while its southern portion forming a part of the Tarai region along the base of the hills. The location of the Darjeeling district is strategically significant as it shares its boundaries with Nepal , Bhutan , and Bangladesh , besides other Indian territories (Sikkim, Bihar, and parts of West Bengal). Some of the notable rivers that flow in the district include Teesta, Mahananda, Jaldhaka, Mechi, Rangeet, and Rammam.

The city of Darjeeling covers an area of only 10.60 sq. km and is situated approximately 621.6km north of the city of Kolkata – the capital of the State of West Bengal; 30.1km from Kurseong, 51.4km from Kalimpong, and 77km from Siliguri. The city is well connected by roadways, railways, and aviation facilities with the other major cities of India. Located about 90km away from Darjeeling, the Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport, while the New Jalpaiguri Junction is the closest railway station. Darjeeling is also linked with the New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station by the 88km long Darjeeling Himalayan Railway – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s mountain railways. The city of Darjeeling is prone to frequent earthquakes as it is located close to the convergent boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates and falls under Seismic Zone-IV.

According to the Köppen climate classification, Darjeeling experiences a subtropical highland climate. As per the records of the Indian Meteorological Department, the annual mean maximum temperature of Darjeeling is 17.2°C, and the annual mean minimum temperature is 8.5°C. Darjeeling receives moderate to heavy rainfall from June to September. With an average of 105 rainy days in a year, the city gets an average annual precipitation of 2,380mm. The heavy rainfall often causes devastating landslides leading to the loss of lives and property damage. The city can go on for many years without receiving snow, as snowfall is quite a rare feature in Darjeeling.  

Demography And Economy Of Darjeeling

As per the 2011 census, the Darjeeling urban agglomeration is home to 132,016 people, of which 66,177 are females, and 65,839 are males. The city has a population density of 413 persons per sq. km. A significant portion of the city’s population are Nepali Indians (Indian Gorkhas), followed by the Lepchas, Bhutias, Tibetans, Bengalis, Anglo-Indians, Marwaris, etc. Even though Nepali is the most widely spoken language in Darjeeling, other languages like Bengali, Hindi, English, and Tibetan are also spoken.

The economy of Darjeeling is mainly driven by the tourism and tea industry. Darjeeling produces approximately 9,000,000 kg of tea every year, accounting for 7% of India’s tea output. Darjeeling Tea which is grown in the tea plantations of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of West Bengal is internationally reputed and recognized as a geographical indicator. The unique agro-climatic conditions of Darjeeling provide the distinctive natural flavor and aroma of Darjeeling Tea, making it one of the most famous varieties of tea in the world. Besides tea, other major crops grown in Darjeeling include cardamon, ginger, maize, millets, paddy, and potato.

Tourist Attractions In Darjeeling

Located at an altitude of 2590m and about 11km from the town of Darjeeling, Tiger Hill provides panoramic views of Mount Kanchenjunga – the world’s third-highest mountain and Mount Everest – the world’s highest mountain.  Due to the curvature of the Earth, Mount Kanchenjunga appears higher than Mount Everest, as it is much closer than that of Mount Everest. The distance from Tiger Hill to Everest is about 172km.

Darjeeling Mall

The Darjeeling Mall or Chowrasta is a historic public square located at the heart of the Darjeeling town, about 1km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station. The Mall area serves as a major shopping hub and a center for commercial activities in Darjeeling. Several benches are located along the Mall road for visitors to sit and enjoy the spectacular mountain views while sipping a cup of Darjeeling tea. Also located close to the Mall is Observatory Hill and the temple of Mahakal.

Ghoom Monastery

Located next to Sterling Darjeeling at the end of the Old Monastery Road is the historic Ghoom Monastery (Yiga Choeling Monastery) which was built by a Mongolian monk named Sherpa Gyaltsho in 1850. The Ghoom Monastery houses a 15ft high Maitreya Buddha statue and an extensive collection of invaluable manuscripts. The monastery also serves as a storehouse of the Tibetan translations of well-known literary works, including Meghadoot by Kalidasa, Nyayakrit by Dharmakriti, and Nagamandala by Sriharsa.

Batasia Loop

Located about 5km from Darjeeling town just below the Ghoom station, Batasia Loop is a spiral railway that was created to gradually lower the gradient of ascent of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Placed at the center of the Batasia Loop is a War Memorial dedicated to the brave Gorkha soldiers who sacrificed their lives after Indian Independence.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

One of the world’s premier mountaineering institutes, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, was established in Darjeeling on November 4, 1954, by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Percival Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. The institute was established to promote mountaineering as an organized sport in India.  

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

Also referred to as the Darjeeling Zoo, the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a small zoo situated in the Birch Hill neighborhood of Darjeeling. Established on August 14, 1958, the Darjeeling Zoo located at an elevation of 2,134m is India’s largest high-altitude zoo. The Darjeeling Zoo specializes in breeding animals adapted to the alpine conditions and runs successful captive breeding programs for several endangered animals like the red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan wolf, etc. The Darjeeling Zoo attracts more than 300,000 visitors annually.  

Peace Pagoda

Located on the slopes of Jalapahar Hills, the Darjeeling Peace Pagoda was constructed in 1972 under the guidance of a Japanese Buddhist monk named Nichidatsu Fuji. The pagoda houses four avatars of Buddha.  From the top of the Pagoda, the visitors can get panoramic views of the surrounding mountain landscape. The Peace Pagoda stands as a symbol of peace and unity in Darjeeling.

It is believed that till the beginning of the 19 th century, the hilly area around Darjeeling was under the control of the Kingdom of Sikkim. During this time, the Chogyal of Sikkim was engaged in an unsuccessful warfare against the Gorkhas of Nepal. The Gorkhas had made several attempts to capture the entire Darjeeling region from 1780 onwards. The British Army was also engaged in preventing the Gorkhas from capturing the entire northern frontier region. In 1814, the Anglo-Nepalese War broke out between the Gorkhas and the British , which eventually led to the defeat of the Gorkhas and the signing of the Sagauli Treaty in 1816. As per the terms of the Sagauli Treaty, all the territories that Nepal annexed from the Chogyal of Sikkim were handed over to the British East India Company. The British East India Company reinstated the Chogyal of Sikkim in 1817 as per the Treaty of Titalia. A British East India Company delegation selected the area in 1828 as a suitable site for establishing a sanatorium for the British soldiers.

In 1835, a part of the Darjeeling hill area was ceded to the British by the Chogyal of Sikkim. The temperate climate of Darjeeling also favored its development as a hill station for the Britishers. A military depot was set up in 1848, and in 1850 the town became a municipality. In 1856, the commercial cultivation of tea began in Darjeeling. It has been recorded that by the beginning of the 20 th century, there were more than 100 tea gardens with about 64,000 employers. In 1864, Darjeeling became the summer capital of the Bengal Presidency. In 1881, the opening of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway further accelerated the development of the entire region. After Indian Independence, the Gorkhaland movement began, which demanded the autonomy of Darjeeling and the creation of a separate Indian State in the Gorkhaland region for the Nepali Gorkhas. In July 2011, a pact was signed between the Government of India, the Government of West Bengal, and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to form an autonomous, elected hill council named the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).

Darjeeling, at the base of the Eastern Himalayas in West Bengal, is a scenic hill station with a turbulent history. Before being developed by the British in the mid-19th century, it was part of the kingdom of Sikkim and was also temporarily ruled by invading Gorkhas from Nepal. Darjeeling quickly grew into a popular summer retreat for the British and they soon discovered that the climate was perfect for growing tea, their favorite brew.

Not surprisingly, Darjeeling is one of the top tourist places in West Bengal . You'll quickly notice that the culture there is very different though. The town is home to many immigrants from surrounding countries such as Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. Nepali, not Hindi or Bengali, is the main language spoken. These top things to do in Darjeeling incorporate the area's distinctive heritage.

Ride the Himalayan Mountain Railway Toy Train

Apart from tea, the other thing that Darjeeling is famous for is its historic toy train. The Darjeeeling Himalayan Railway was completed by the British in 1881 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It runs all the way from the lower reaches of the mountains to Darjeeling town. The full journey takes nearly a whole day. However, shorter joy rides are possible. The most popular of these is from Darjeeling to Ghoom via Batasia Loop. The train stops for 10 minutes at Batasia Loop, where there's a lookout and war memorial dedicated to Gorkha soldiers from Darjeeling. It also stops for 30 minutes at Ghoom, where there's a railway museum.

Tour the Tea Gardens

More than 80 tea gardens carpet the hills around Darjeeling and any trip there wouldn't be complete without visiting a few. As you leave Darjeeling town, you'll come across gardens everywhere and can stop at any that appeal. Most will allow you to take a stroll around. Many sell teas too.

• Happy Valley Tea Estate is the most famous tea garden. It's only five minutes from town, making it invariably visited by tourists. The estate has a long history dating back to 1850 and grows among the finest organic teas in the region. For an additional 50 rupees, you can get dressed up in a traditional Nepali outfit and pose in the tea gardens.
• Badamtam Tea Estate, about 15 minutes north of Darjeeling town, is notable for having a towering Buddha statue presiding over its tea bushes.
• An hour and a half south of Darjeeling, you'll find some outstanding tea gardens near Kurseong. These include Makaibari Tea Estate (which produces some of the rarest and most expensive tea in the world), Castleton (which actually has a castle of sorts and has been owned by Kolkata royalty) and sprawling Ambootia Tea Estate (their organic Darjeeling black tea is highly regarded).

If you're flying into Bagdogra Airport and driving to Darjeeling, you may also want to drop into Nuxalbari Tea Estate. This commendable tea estate is only 15 minutes from the airport. It's owned and run by women, and is the first large tea estate in India to produce " Certified Elephant Friendly Tea ". Elephants are free to pass through the tea gardens!

Learn How Tea Is Processed

Witnessing, and even participating in, the tea harvesting process is a big attraction from March to November. Some of the bigger tea estates offer guided tours of their factories. Happy Valley Tea Estate, closest to town, is the best place to go. You'll get a full demonstration of how the leaves are plucked, oxidized, segregated and processed. Fascinating! The guided tea tours are conducted regularly from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily and cost 100 rupees.

Makaibari Tea Estate is another recommended place to learn about tea processing. Their tea factory tour is well-organized and insightful, and there are samples for tasting. The cost is 20 rupees. They also have a pioneering homestay scheme , whereby you can stay overnight in the village with a family of tea pluckers and join them in their morning work for an immersive experience.

Alternatively, Rainbow Valley Resort on Kalej Valley Tea Estate, 50 minutes south of Darjeeling, is a popular budget option. Wooden cottages cost about 3,500 rupees per night for a double. Tathagata Farm is part of an experiential organic tea farming community 45 minutes northeast of Darjeeling. It provides an authentic local experience, with village walks and day hikes. Guest accommodations consist of cottages and luxury tents. Rates start from about 4,000 rupees per night.

Meander Along the British-Era Mall

Similar to other hill stations in India that were settled by the British, Darjeeling has a Mall Road that runs through the town. It stems off from one end of pedestrianized Chowrasta Square, the local hangout spot at the center of town, and connects to another end of it after doing a big loop around Observatory Hill. The shady, forested road is dotted with important historical buildings dating back to the British Raj era and has numerous viewpoints, including one to Mount Kanchenjunga. The whole walk can be completed in about 20 minutes. If you're not feeling energetic or fit, you can hire a pony for a couple hundred rupees. Chowrasta Square is a fantastic place for people-watching, so do sit and enjoy the atmosphere for a while too.

Take a detour off Mall Road up to the remarkable Mahakal temple complex on Observatory Hill. This site was previously home to a Buddhist monastery, built by Lama Dorjey Rinzing in 1765. Apparently, he also built the Mahakal temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, in 1782 after three Shiva lingas (symbols of Lord Shiva) manifested themselves there. Unfortunately, the monastery was plundered by invading Gorkhas from Nepal in 1815. However, the temple still remains, evocatively surrounded by Buddhist prayer flags and prayer wheels. Don't be surprised to see a Hindu priest and Buddhist monk praying alongside each other. Nearby, are a few other temples and a sacred cave. Plus, lots of monkeys. Avoid carrying food because they may make a lunge for it!

Soak Up the Views with Tea at Sunset Lounge

Where else to spend sunset than at the Sunset Lounge at Chowrasta Square. This tea bar belongs to Nathmulls , a prominent Darjeeling tea merchant, and is attached to their tea shop. As is to be expected, the variety of teas available is extensive. If you're finding it difficult to choose, the owner will give suggestions. Or, have a tea tasting session (600 rupees for two people). It consists of six teas — three black, two green, and one white. Pastries and cakes, made from the bakery on the premises, are delicious to eat with it. There's also free wireless Internet. Nathmulls sells all kinds of tea accessories, as well as tea, which make great gifts for tea-lovers.

Step Back in Time at the Windamere Hotel

Want to get a feel for how Darjeeling was during the time of British rule in India? Windamere Hotel on Observatory Hill is the place. Some may say it's lost in a time warp, while others will find it delightfully quirky. The hotel was constructed as a boarding house for British planters in the 1880s and not much has changed there in over a century, including the vintage furniture and old-fashioned customs. The hotel prides itself on serving formal meals (there's no room service) in the dining hall, with set times for children and adults. Guests are requested to dress appropriately for dinner — no nightgowns, pajamas, or "short pants"! The highlight is the traditional afternoon high tea, presented by waitresses dressed as tea maids from the 1930s. You're guaranteed to meet some engaging people there. Rates start from 13,500 rupees per night for a double, inclusive of all meals.

Gaze at Mount Kanchenjunga

If the weather is expected to be clear, most tourists head up to Tiger Hill early in the morning to watch the sunrise over the snowy peaks of iconic Mount Kanchenjunga (the highest mountain in India and third highest in the world). The best months to do this are from mid October to December, and March to April. Unfortunately, notoriously unpredictable mist or fog may ruin the show though. The cold temperature and waking hour also deter some people from going.

Depending on the time of year, you'll need to leave your hotel by around 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. to beat the massive crowd. Otherwise, you may be stuck in the convoy of cars, and fail to get a spot at the Observatory Tower and Deck. Ticket prices range from 30 to 50 rupees, depending on the floor. Don't worry too much if you miss the spectacle, as Mount Kanchenjunga can be seen from many locations around Darjeeling town.

Marvel Over the Buddhist Monasteries

The prevalence of Buddhist monasteries in and around Darjeeling are reflective of the region's predominant religion, Buddhism. Their bright murals, gigantic golden statues, and pervasively peaceful vibes make them captivating places to visit. Bhutia Busty Monastery is closest to town. It sits downhill from Chowrasta Square and was built there in the 19th century, after being relocated from Observatory Hill where the Mahakal temple is.

There are many more monasteries around Ghoom. These include Yiga Choeling Monastery (the first Tibetan Buddhist monastery to be built in the region), Guru Monastery (you can attend morning worship from 5.30 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. when returning from Tiger Hill), and Samten Choeling Gompa (with the largest Buddha statue in West Bengal). Dali Monastery, formally known as Druk Sangag Choeling Monastery, is also a must-visit between Ghoom and Darjeeling.

Join in the Prayer for World Peace

The Japanese Peace Pagoda is another calm and compelling attraction between Ghoom and Darjeeling. It's one of many peace pagodas erected worldwide under the guidance of Japanese Buddhist monk Nichidatsu Fujii, in response to the brutal atomic attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II. The monk was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, and strong supporter of unity and non-violence. The pagoda has striking gold statues of Lord Buddha in various postures and artwork depicting his life. A small Japanese temple sits not far from it. Upstairs in the prayer hall, prayers for world peace take place in the morning from 4.30 a.m. to 6 a.m. and afternoon from 4.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors are invited to join in and play a drum if they wish.

The Tibetan Refuge Self Help Center on West Lebong Cart Road is an insightful place to watch the traditional art of rug weaving. This center was established in 1959 to support the Tibetans who fled their homeland after occupation by China. It provided them with an outlet where they could produce and sell Tibetan handicrafts to generate an income. The workshops aren't as productive as they once were because most of the refugees have aged. However, various handcrafts are still sold on the premises, including rugs. You can even design your own rug or choose from the catalog. Visitors can also see an educational exhibition of old photos and documents dedicated to the Tibetan cause. The center is closed on Sundays.

Along with the culture, the cuisine in Darjeeling is strongly influenced by Tibet and Nepal. Momos, the quintessential mountain soul food, are everywhere. However, the curiously-named Hot Stimulating Cafe on the way to the zoo dishes up some of the best momos in India (although they're vegetarian only). This simple cafe is actually one of the best places to chill out in Darjeeling, as its rear deck provides a marvelous view over the valley and tea gardens. Devour the momos with local tumba (millet and wheat beer). You can even learn how to make momos, as informal cooking classes are conducted! The cafe is open daily from early morning until evening.

Hit up Darjeeling's indispensable Chowk Bazaar (also known as Lower Bazaar) for a real local market experience. It's situated to the south of town, downhill off Hill Cart Road, and is where the town's residents go to buy pretty much everything at bargain prices. Its lanes are filled with an assortment of products including wholesale spices, tea, vegetables, meat, Buddhist artifacts, masks, household items, shoes, textiles, rugs, and caps. The market is open daily, except Thursdays, from early morning until night. Weekends are especially busy, as vendors bring in bulk produce from surrounding villages to sell. Be prepared for crowds and chaos!

Spot the Shy Red Panda and Other Rare Animals

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoo is one of the best in India and a top attraction for families in Darjeeling. This high-altitude zoo was established in 1958 to help conserve and breed endangered native Himalayan animals such as the snow leopard, Himalayan wolf, and red panda (which Mozilla's Firefox Internet browser is said to have been named after). It also has bears, birds, panthers, deer and reptiles. Notably, many animals are kept in a protected open area, so it's like observing them in the wild.

In addition, there's a museum with a variety of stuffed animals and birds. The zoo is situated to the north of town, about a 20 minute walk from Chowrasta via Lebong Cart Road. It's open daily from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., except Thursdays. Allow a couple of hours to see everything. Tickets cost 60 rupees for Indians and 100 rupees for foreigners. An additional camera fee is payable.

Learn About Mountaineering and Try Rock Climbing

Behind the zoo, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was founded and by the late Tenzing Norgay, who conquered Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. Its museum is an inimitable repository of information about climbing Mount Everest and other major mountain expeditions undertaken. It can be visited in conjunction with the zoo, as tickets cover both. The institute is also a functioning mountaineering training center that offers mountaineering courses for all levels and fun rock climbing sessions. There's an indoor rock wall that costs 30 rupees to climb. Otherwise, the more strenuous outdoor rock climbing happens at Tenzing Norgay Rock, on the northern outskirts of Darjeeling.

Experience the Thrill of Paragliding

Thrill-seekers will be happy to know that paragliding is possible in Darjeeling. Off Road Adventure started the activity there in 2006. Blue Dragon Adventure and Travel also does paragliding and is recommended. Flights typically launch from Saint Paul School near Jalapahar, about a 10 minute drive above Darjeeling town, and land at Lebong Ground. You'll get an amazing bird's-eye view of the town, tea gardens and mountain peaks. Paragliding is dependent on wind conditions and only takes place from October to April. Tandem flights are offered for those who aren't experienced. Expect to pay 3,500 rupees per person for 15 to 30 minutes, based on the conditions.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

In addition to the walking opportunities around town, Darjeeling is close to some popular hiking and trekking trails that can be covered in a day or longer. If you want to hike independently, ascending the Tiger Hill summit is a good option. Take Tenzing Norgay Road from Chowrasta or Gandhi Road. Otherwise, day hikes to Tonglu or Tumling villages have rewarding views of Mount Kanchenjunga. These hikes start two or three hours from Darjeeling. Adventures Unlimited , Blue Dragon Adventure, Off Road Adventure, and Ashmita Trek and Tours are reputable companies that conduct the hikes with transport and guides.

If you'd prefer a multi-day trek, try the trek to Sandakphu at the summit of the Singalila mountain range. It can be completed in four or five days, and you don't need to be super fit if you're used to walking. The views, flora and fauna are superb. For an added challenge, continue on to Phalut from Sandakphu (or drive to Sandakphu and start trekking from there). The above companies, as well as Tenzing Norgay Adventures , all provide trekking packages of different lengths.

Be a "Day Tripper" at Revolver

Are you a fan of The Beatles, the wildly famous English rock band from the 1960s? You'll feel right at home at Revolver. This characterful budget guesthouse is themed on the band, with each of its five rooms named after one of the Fab Four (plus manager Brian Epstein). Naturally, the owners are mad about The Beatles. They've filled the guesthouse with Beatles memorabilia such as photos, posters, and stamps. They also sell Beatles souvenirs, including mugs and coasters. Darjeeling (Nepali: दार्जिलिङ Dārjiliṅ , Bengali: দার্জিলিং Dārjiliṁ ) is a hill station in the northern region of West Bengal . It used to be a lovely Victorian town built among the Himalayan foothills, the remnants of which are still visible around the Chowrasta. Darjeeling remains a popular summer and fall resort for the natives of Kolkata today. The main attractions are the cultural diversity of the Tibetan and Nepali populations. The town is also a jumping off point for travelers heading to Sikkim .

Understand [ edit ]

Darjeeling ( DAHR-jih-lihng ) used to be a cluster of villages that was administered intermittently by Nepal and Sikkim . It grew in prominence during the mid-19th century when, because of its climate, the British established a hill station there.

Later it was discovered that the area was particularly well suited for tea plantations and Darjeeling tea is still exported worldwide. In 1849, the British annexed the area and Darjeeling became a part of British India. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was opened in 1881 (it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site ) and the town became famous during the days when the Raj was governed from Calcutta, the present-day Kolkata .

Many Tibetan refugees moved here after Tibet was annexed by China. They co-exist with the descendants of the many Nepalese who once came to the land as soldiers of Prithvi Narayan Shah and settled down there to work as labourers in the tea plantations.

There has been intermittent political action from Gorkha groups demanding an independent state (Gorkhaland). In June 2008 a strike paralyzed the area, with closed hotels, restaurants and shops, and the accompanying protests even turned violent a couple of times. Though inconvenient, tourists generally are not at risk, but you should check the status before going there.

Nepali is the main language spoken in Darjeeling. However, as it is in the state of West Bengal, Bengali is the state official language that is used in state government offices. In addition, most well-educated locals will also be able to speak Hindi and English.

The nearest international airport is Bagdogra ( IXB  IATA ) in Siliguri, 96 km from Darjeeling. There are flights from Bangkok , Paro and to most major cities in India.

By taxi or shared terrain vehicle [ edit ]

Siliguri is the nearest city on the mainline rail network. Ample transport is available to Darjeeling from here, a 3-hour drive on a well-maintained, hilly paved road. The most popular modes of transport are taxi (usually shared by three to four passengers), shared terrain vehicle (ten passengers), ₹150-200 depending on time.

Shared terrain vehicles depart regularly from several locations around town. They leave when full, and are a cheap, fast and reasonably comfortable way to reach Darjeeling.

After arrival by train at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri, taxis (₹1500-3000) and shared terrain vehicles continue the trip to Darjeeling. There is a booking counter at the taxi stand in front of the railway station. There is a prepaid taxi stand in front of the train station. After the last terrain vehicle has left to make a return journey from Darjeeling, the price rises to ₹200 per person. The prepaid counter will state that no terrain vehicles are available, but they can be arranged by fixers or by negotiating directly with drivers.

Tourists often opt to buy an extra seat or two to have more space for the three-hour journey up to Darjeeling. Luggage is carried for free on the roof (try to hire a taxi, terrain vehicle, or SUV with overhead carrier). Terrain vehicles may stop for a snack and toilet break on the way up (normally a few kilometres short of Kurseong ).

By bus [ edit ]

There are buses from Siliguri to Darjeeling, but they are slow due to the steep, twisted, narrow climb to Darjeeling. The option of shared terrain vehicles is available and it is cheap and faster. But terrain vehicles wait for a full load of passengers before departing.

If the bus price is ₹113 to Darjeeling from New Jalpaiguri, consider hiring a taxi, Terrain vehicle or SUV with overhead carrier. This will be cheaper if the vehicle goes directly from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.

By train [ edit ]

New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri is the nearest station on the main inter-city line. Direct trains to NJP run from Delhi (approx. 27 hours) several times daily. From Kolkata 's (Sealdah railway station), the best train is the Darjeeling Mail (circa 12 hours) running nightly at 10:05PM. There is also a train from Howrah Station called Paharia Express, departing from Howrah Station at 9:55PM and arriving at New Jalpaiguri at 8:45AM.

From NJP, the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) , known as the 'Toy Train', completes the journey to Darjeeling. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was the first, and still the most outstanding, example of a hill passenger railway. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This route is popular with tourists as it passes through picturesque mountain scenery and has been the subject of many articles. The line has a series of zigzags and loops to gain height and even runs straight up several village main streets!

Seats on the DHR Toy Train sell out in peak season, so make reservations up to one month in advance. The train departs New Jalpaiguri at 9AM and arrives in Darjeeling at 3:30PJ, but only on certain days of the week. The train is diesel-hauled now and is reliable and punctual.

The steam 'Joy' train operates from Darjeeling to Ghum via the Batasia Loop, four times a day – enquire at Darjeeling station. Steam trains cost ₹2200 and diesel trains cost ₹1200. See the DHR website [dead link] .

A steam train also operates between Siliguri and 'Agony Point' above Tindharia most Saturdays and Sundays. Enquire at Siliguri station.

There is also a daily 'School Train' departing Kurseong at 6:15AM and arriving at Darjeeling at 8:45AM. It leaves Darjeeling at 4PM and arrives at Kurseong at 6:30PM. This is still hauled by a steam engine and is one of the world's last 'day to day' steam trains. Its schedule is frequently changed and it often runs hours late.

Get around [ edit ]

Darjeeling is a small town and the salubrious climate means walks around town are an extremely enjoyable means of getting around. For longer trips, taxis are available in stands near the entrance to the Supermarket.

A great way to spend a day is to take a share-terrain vehicle to Ghum, visit some monasteries there and walk back via some of the villages.

One can also walk to the botanical garden and spend a few pleasant hours appreciating nature, then there is a rock garden, which is very much at a (slightly longish) walkable distance. One can also walk to the zoo and then to the ropeway at North Point. A walk to the Peace Pagoda and then to Jalapahar is also quite refreshing. Have a leisurely walk on the Mall road and relax for hours in the soothing sun at Chowrasta.

If you're woken up due to the sound of drumming in the streets of Darjeeling between 4 and 5AM: These are the monks (Theravada) of the Japanese temple having their early morning walk.

You may think of it as an alternative to Tiger-hill to see the sunlight magic on Kangchenjunga from this park. Good spot for photographers, as this place is not very crowded. Darjeeling is one of the oldest hill stations in India, and has plenty of options, both for those seeking a lazy getaway from the hot plains, as well as nature enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies. Apart from sights within the town, there are plenty of trek options along the Himalayan ridges on the India-Nepal border near Darjeeling. The most popular one is the Singalila Ridge Trail. Bookings for guides, porters and accommodation on the trail can be made in Darjeeling or in the nearby town of Manebhanjang, which serves as the trailhead. From July to mid-September the Singalila park is closed, but because of the rain, clouds and fog it is less enjoyable anyway.

• Shrubbery Health Club . Less visited but offers unique and charming views of Kangchenjunga. Few locals can been found jogging here and offering prayers to various deities.

• Das Studio , The Mall ( on the way to Mall ). Posters and picture postcards. Excellent selection of posters and cards depicting scenes of the Himalayas.  
• Dorjee ( 20 paces uphill from Rink Mall, across the street from the General Post Office ). A unique shop that has a fascinating collection of Buddhist and other local artefacts. This place, though surprisingly small, is more like a mini Aladdin’s cave for objet-d'art lovers. However, the owner is rude towards Indians and they are frequently cold shouldered unlike the deep interest shown to foreign customers. When buying artifacts it is best to take a look round and not to appear in a hurry. You may try few other shops, which are opposite the State Bank of India and also below the Chowrasta mall. • Handbags & Junk Jewellery . Darjeeling is a place where you can get variety of ladies' hand bags and junk jewellery at an completely affordable price. You can try to bargain if you really like a piece.  
• Oxford Bookshop , Chowrasta . Excellent selection of titles. Local travel guides.  
• Tea . Darjeeling is famous all over the world for its teas, which are very aromatic and have a delicate taste. Shops selling teas (usually owned by local tea gardens), dot the area in and around the Mall, and at the Chowrasta. Golden Tips & Nathmulls are especially known for their tea and also ship worldwide. Another mention is a local tea shop, Thunderbolt Tea located on the way to Happy Valley Tea Estate. Stop by to smell the numerous varieties they have to offer. 'Darjeeling Tea House' located just diagonal to Nathmulls is also a good place to purchase tea. Location: Rink Mall

Several eateries that dish out North Indian, Nepali, Tibetan, and continental fare dot the area around the Mall. "Momos", steamed Tibetan delicacies, are a staple food offered by almost every eating joint.

Everything closes pretty early in the night (The town goes to sleep before 9PM; plan to be at your restaurant no later than 7PM). If you are planning to stay up late, you might keep something extra in stock to eat.

The Momos here are awesome! They even offer a Momo-cooking course! If you want to taste the local home brewed beer Tongba, this is the place. The guy who owns it can double up as your local guide, trekking along with you to some adventurous outings from Darjeeling.  
• Hotel Lunar . This is probably the best vegetarian restaurants in town where you can enjoy a great view and wonderful service.

For vegetarians good place to eat with North and South Indian dishes, Chinese. One must taste Thupka (soupy noodles) here. They have two menu cards, one Thai and the other Indian, and the cook mastered both cuisines. The Thai cuisine is quite excellent. Try their Thai style chicken rice noodle. ₹90-150 .  
• Beni's Cafe. Opposite the Big Bazaar, Near the Rink Mall. 3, Dr.S.M. Das Road. Around the corner from the Timber Lodge (100 m). Snacks, drinks and sweets. Lots of local people here. Price is OK.

• Joey's Pub – Pop into Joey's Pub for some cheap beer, great hospitality, cricket on TV etc. A British-looking pub popular with travellers. A good place to pick up trekking information and travel partners to fill a terrain vehicle to Sikkim or down to the plains.

Sleep [ edit ]

Darjeeling has a large number of hotels and lodges. However, on the whole, budget accommodation is of poor value compared to elsewhere in India. Most places target groups coming in from West Bengal; backpacker-oriented accommodation is sparse and you probably won't get touts coming to pick you up at the bus stop so it pays to have a few ideas in advance.

There are several forest guesthouses in the Darjeeling area. In order to stay at any of these a special permit from West Bengal Forest Department is required.

Stay safe [ edit ]

There has been a surge of tourists visiting Darjeeling in the last few years. Earlier, there was continuous turmoil and political disturbance in the hills . But since the establishment of the new government in 2011, the political stability has been restored and life came back to normal.

But extreme suffering and poor state of business, development, jobs and infrastructure has created deep scars, which may take some more time to heal. So a note of caution is given while travelling around the city.

Take caution when walking at night, as many feral dogs roam the street once the sun goes down. If approached by an aggressive dog in the street, acting as though you are picking up a rock to throw will usually deter them.

About Darjeeling

The queen of the hills is a Himalayan city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is internationally renowned as a tourist destination for its spectacular view of Mt.Kanchandzonga, along with its tea industry and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site. One can have the view of entire Singalila Range along with Mt.Kanchandzonga, Bhutan Himalaya and a part of Everest range from Darjeeling. The eye caching valleys, meandering rivers and of course the lush green tea gardens are the unique features of Darjeeling .Beside all these the main attractions of this popular hill stations are Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) , Himalayan Zoo , Tiger Hill , Rock Garden , Batashiya Loop.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR):

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal is about 86 kilometres (53 mi) long. The century old train has been declared as World Heritage by UNESCO in 1999. The construction of DHR was started in 1879 & was fully functional in 1981. Its elevation level varies from 100 metres (328 ft) at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling. A journey from Siliguri to Darjeeling (approx 7hrs) or a joy ride in Darjeeling will be lifetime experience for any tourist.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute:

The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute was set up by the local hero Tenzing Norgay Sherpa following their successful ascent on Mount Everest on 28 May 1953 during 1954, this unique institution trains mountaineers. Apart from Tenzing, legendary mountaineers like Nawang Gombu ( First man to climb Everest twice ) and Lattoo Dorjee Sherpa have helped build the reputation of this pioneering institute. The institute is presently under the purview of the Ministry of Defense, Government of India. It is situated on Jawahar Parbat about 2 Km from Chowrasta.

The oldest mountaineering institute in the country carries out various mountaineering courses every year as well as has the very good collection of mountaineering equipments which have been used in various mountaineering expeditions and other wise. The traces of attempts made to conquer Mt. Everest have been kept in the Mt. Everest Museum. The institute also screens short films on mountaineering. You can also view the Himalayan peaks through the Zeiss Telescope given to the Nepalese Maharaja by Hitler. Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was the Director of this institute for many years and he was cremated near the institute after his death in 1986.

Situated 13 kilometers from the town at an altitude of 2590 meters (8482 ft.), has earned international fame for its magnificent view of the sunrise over the "Kanchanjunga" and the great eastern Himalayan peaks. On a clear sky even Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, is visible from here along with other Himalayan giant Lhotse,Makalu,Janu,Rathong,Kabru, Pandim,Simvo and Siniolchu.

At an altitude of 1250m, this tranquil hill station is located on top of a ridge on the east of river Teesta. Kalimpong is known for its educational institutions many of which were established during the British colonial period. It used to be a gateway in the trade between Tibet and India prior to China's annexation of Tibet and the Sino-Indian War.

The town is famous for its indigenous handicraft. The artisans here produce Tibetan and Bhutanese handicraft and jewellery such as woodcarvings, copperware like feng-sui bells, tapestry bags, scrolls, paintings and Tibetan jewellery.

Horticulture is also important to Kalimpong: it has a flower market notable for its wide array of orchids; nurseries, which export Himalayan grown flower bulbs, tubers and rhizomes, contribute to the economy of Kalimpong. Home to ethnic Nepalis, indigenous ethnic groups and non-native migrants from other parts of India, the town also is a religious centre of Buddhism. The Buddhist monastery Zang Dhok Palri Phodang holds a number of rare Tibetan Buddhist scriptures.

Lava & Loleygaon:

These two places are the recently invented hamlets in the lap of the nature. Lava is 32 km. away from Kalimpong is the entry point to the beautiful Neora Valley National Park from Kalimpong. The route to Lava is scenic with the change in vegetation from tropical deciduous to the wet alpine trees of fir, pine and birch . Loleygaon 24 km from Lava lying at an altitude of 1,675 meters in the Darjeeling District of West Bengalis is a small Lepcha village situated in an extreme end of a Himalayan Ridge offers a magnificent view of Mt.Kanchandzonga range. One can get closer to the nature by walking on the canopy bridge in Loleygaon.

Located in the Indian state of West Bengal, Darjeeling is known for its tea industry. The city is located amidst the lower Himalayas that are also known as the Mahabharat Range. The town was developed in the mid-19th century by the British and soon the town came to be known for its vast tea estates that produce the best Tea in the country. The city was controlled by the kingdom of Sikkim till it was taken by the Gorkhas and subsequently the British. The town is located at an average elevation of 2050 meters and comes under the eastern Himalayan Zoo-geographic zone. 1. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The most famous attraction in Darjeeling, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) is also known as the ‘Toy Train’. It is a narrow gauge rail that is 2ft in width and runs between Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri and was built in the years between 1879 and 1881. In 1999, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, making DHR, the Second railway in the world to have such an honor after Semmering Railway, Austria.

2. Singalila National Park

Located at an altitude of approximately 2134 meters above sea level the Singalila National Park is situated in the highest regions of West Bengal. The park is known for its amazing peaks and the panoramic views of the lesser Himalayas. The National Park is famous as a trekker’s paradise with a large verity of mountainous vegetation, fauna, and birds. 3. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park

The zoo is located at an average elevation of 2,134 meters above sea level and is the largest high altitude zoos in India. Some of the rare and endangered species in the zoo are snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan Salamanders, Tibetan wolf, Himalayan mountain goat and Siberian tigers.

4. Tiger Hill

One of the most famous peaks in Darjeeling can be reached either by jeep or by foot which transverses through some of the oldest tea plantations in Darjeeling. Actually, I want to go to Darjeeling after a long wait with my friends in this year first time and i am very excited about this outing, but i am very concerned about timings because me and my all friends are emloyed in private sector and worry about sanctioned leaves.

So anyone can suggest/advise me, that minimum how many days we can expect to capture all above mentioned tourist places in Darjeeling and return back to Delhi within minimum days and how will we manage our trip.

1. Tiger Hill

2. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR)

The most attractive tourist activity in Darjeeling is to enjoy the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) or the ‘Toy Train’. It is a 2-feet, narrow gauge rail that runs zigzag and in a loop between Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. It was between 1879 and 1881 and runs up to a height of more than 7,000 feet. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is one of the oldest and highest railway lines in the world and in 1999, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and covers a distance of 78 km. 5. Singalila National Park

6. Japanese Peace Pagoda

Built during 1885-1985 by a Japanese, Nichidatsu Fuji, who was a Buddhist monk from Japan, the Japanese Peace Pagoda is at a distance of 2.5 km from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The Buddhist shrine is a beautiful white structure with golden sculptures resting picturesquely on the slopes of the Jalapahar hill in Darjeeling. This 23-metre wide and 28.5-meter high pagoda is one of the several others built across the world by the Japanese Buddhist Nipponzan Myohoji organization. M. Ohka designed this tallest structure in Darjeeling and aims to spread peace and prosperity across the globe.

7. Neora Valley National Park

The Neora Valley National Park was established in 1986 and is spread across an expansive 88 square kilometres. An important biological zone of the north-east, the Neora Valley National Park is the home to the largest populations of Red Panda in India. 8. Lively Darjeeling Mall Road

Dali Monastery belongs to the Kargyupa sect and was built by Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche in 1971. His Holiness Dalai Lama inaugurated this Buddhist monastery in 1993 and it is an important centre. for preservation of the age-old culture and tradition of the Tibetan monks. Dali Monastery is built in traditional Tibetan style of architecture and is the headquarters and the residence for Drukchen Rinpoche the XII, the supreme leader of the Kargyupa sect.

Here, resides 210 monks who came to live here from the Himalayan region. A small library inside the monastery caters to people interested in Buddhism and the philosophical acts of life.

10. Amazing Sandakphu Trek

The collection includes 108-volume Kangyur which is believed to have been spoken by the Buddha himself. Its walls are painted with beautiful representations of Buddhist literature and Tibetan art. History of Ghum Monastery dates back to 1850 when its external structure was established by the Mongolian astrologer and monk Sokpo Sherab Gyatso. He headed the operation of the monastery till 1905.

16. Amazing Rock Garden

The Rock Garden was constructed by the Gorkha Hill Council Tourism Department to make Darjeeling more alluring for tourists after a temporary lull in tourism due to the political agitations of the 1980s that disrupted tourism for a while. It is a lush green, exquisitely landscaped, multi-level picnic ground that is designed around a natural waterfall. Spread on the hill slopes at an altitude of 2,134 metres, the Rock Garden was successful in becoming a centre of tourist attraction in Darjeeling. 17. Mahakal Mandir

Bhutia Busty Monastery is located in the Bhutia Colony after it was shifted from the Observatory Hill. The Monastery was established in 1761 by the Lama Dorje Rinzing. It was attacked and plundered and suffered damage in 1815 and had to be rebuilt in 1861. After being relocated in 1879 to the Colony it again underwent extensive damage in the earthquake, following which it was renovated in 1934. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute showcases the best mountaineering gears and expedition artifacts. It is one of the best tourist places in Darjeeling especially for the mountain lovers. It was built in the memory of Tenzing Norgay who, along with Sir Edmund Hillary, climbed Everest in 1953. Belonging to the Nyingma sect, the Bhutia Busty Monastery, which is also known as Karma Dorjee Choling monastery, is a branch of Phodang Monastery in Sikkim. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Darjeeling. It was initially built atop the Observatory Hill in 1761 by Lama Dorje Rinzing but was later relocated to its present location in 1879 after the invasion of Darjeeling by the Gorkhas.

The Bhutia Busty Monastery is approximately 2 kilometers down from the Mall and houses a huge collection of Old Buddhist scripts, including the “Book of Dead ”, which is one of the notable ones. The present architectural structure that dilates the Buddhist traditional style of craftsmanship pulls in thousands of tourists throughout the year.

The monastery maintains a prayer room, a model of Lord Buddha, photographs of the Dalai Lama and images of Goddess Tara Devi and Lakshmi Eswari. It also houses a huge collection of murals, which are originally made out of real gold powder.

Established on 2 October 1959, Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center is a home to the Tibetan refugees, sick, elderly and destitute… the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center today houses 130 Tibetan families who mostly earn their bread and butter by producing traditional handicrafts like Buddha idols, various Tibetan sculptures, musical instruments, masks, thangka painting and many more.

It is located at hillside Lebong in Darjeeling that has a historical significance where the thirteenth Dalai Lama had spent his exile in India from 1910 to 1912. It is a must visit place in Darjeeling for tourists having keen interest in Indo-Tibetan culture and their lifestyle.

A fine example of traditional Japanese style architecture, the Japanese Temple is one of the major Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Darjeeling that was inaugurated in the year 1972. It is a two storied white building that maintains a large prayer room where the chief priest offers the prayers, beating a huge drum (also known as Ho-ko) that reverberates to build up a solemn atmosphere in the entire temple premises. The temple further hosts a picture of the founder Fujii Guruji and a model of Lord Buddha.

Close to the Japanese Temple is the Peace Pagoda, which is a monument to inspire peace, designed to provide a focus for people of all races and creeds, and to help unite them in their search for world peace. It was inaugurated in the year 1992 and houses four avatars of Lord Buddha.

Besides hosting several boutique shops, restaurants and eateries… this place is just your own pick where you would love to get hold of nature at its best.

One side of the mall is thickly layered with pine forest under the shadow of the towering mountain peaks, the other side lies shops of traditional garments, handicrafts, carpets, rugs, paintings, semi-precious jewellery and metal wares. Some of the noted shops, restaurants and eateries in the area are Habeeb Mullick & Son, Curio Corner, Nathmulls Tea & Sunset Lounge, Golden Tips, Life & Leaf, Jolly arts and Bhutan Tibet Art Shop.

The Hawa Ghar and the huge golden color statue of the Nepali poet Bhanubhakta Acharya are the two major attractions in Chowrasta. The Bhutia Market, which is close to Chowrasta is another attraction for shopaholics.

One of the top tourist attractions in Darjeeling is the Tiger Hill, which is the highest point in the region. It stands at an elevation of 2,590 meters overlooking the spur of the snowcapped mountain ranges of the Eastern Himalaya. Tiger Hill is one of the two points in India from where you can capture the entire panorama between Mount Everest and Khangchendzonga along with other peaks like the Kabru, Rathong and Kokhtang on a sunny morning.

The other point from where you can have a glimpse of a similar panorama is from Phalut, at 3,600 meters approximately, which can be only reached by trekking. The Phalut trekking route from Darjeeling starts from Manebhanjan and goes through Tonglu, Giribas, Kalapokhri and Sandakphu.

The Singalila National Park that falls on the trekking route is yet another attraction in and around Darjeeling. Nonetheless, Tiger Hill is best known for the amazing view of the Khangchendzonga peak at sunrise. It is easily accessible by road and roughly takes 40-45 minutes to reach from Darjeeling town.

Originally formed in 1915, to display only the specimens of butterflies and birds of the area… the Bengal Natural History Museum comprises two major sections today housing a huge collection of different specimens like birds with nests and eggs, reptiles and fishes, mammals, insects and more.

The taxidermy unit that was built at the time of inception serves to mount the skins of animals so that they have a lifelike appearance at the display. While one of the sections exhibit specimens like Himalayan Brown Wood Owls, Northern spotted owlet, Northern Brown Fish Owl, pheasants, fly catchers, woodpeckers and 800 more bird species, 35 species of snakes, 57 species of fishes, 608 species of butterflies and moths the other is stocked with animal species like Tibetan fox, Tibetan Lynx, elephant, Toddy cat, heads of wild buffaloes hanging from the walls, panthers, leopards and many more.

There are some other less important sections in the museum that display specimens of reptiles and insects. It is one of the best places to visit with family in Darjeeling for a great insight on bird and animal life.

Close to Chowrasta or The Mall, the Observatory Hill is another popular tourist place in Darjeeling from where you can capture magnificent views of the snow-clad peaks, including Kanchendzonga and its sister peaks. It is approximately 10-15 minutes of uphill walk from the Mall. Atop the hill is the Mahakal Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and also holds three gold plated icons of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar.

It is one of the major Hindu pilgrimage sites in Darjeeling that was built after the invasion by the Gorkhas in the 19th century. Originally this place was the home to the Dorjeling Monastery that was relocated in 1861 to its present location, which is some 2 kilometers down from the Mall. Around the Observatory Hill you come across the Sai Baba Temple and Hanuman Temple and several Hindu priests and Buddhist monks.

Jurassic Jungle Boat Ride ranked third worst attraction in world

Solitaired, an online game site, analyzed 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions worldwide to determine which were the least interesting. The analysis focused on keywords such as "boring," "bored," "bore," "boredom," "tiresome," "dull," "drab," "lackluster," "lifeless," "mediocre" and "tedious."

Tennessee ranked No. 3 as the state with the most intensely boring attractions (49). And the Jurassic Jungle Boat Ride, an indoor boat adventure through an animatronic dinosaur park, was deemed the third most boring tourist attraction in the world.

The park, which has a three-star rating on Google, drew criticism for being run-down and overpriced, with one reviewer commenting, "It’s almost comical on how bad this attraction is."

"The park's theme appears far from amusement," Solitaired wrote. "According to the reviews, these dinos are ghosts of their former selves, perhaps worthy of a museum like their fossilized brethren."

Other Pigeon Forge mainstays also deemed boring

There are always going to be Debbie Downers among us . So take these rankings with a grain of salt, because even though enough reviewers enjoyed these attractions to give them an average rating of between 4.3 and 4.6, they still made the boring list.

• MagiQuest, which is home to Special FX Pirate Golf, Odyssey Mirror Maze and Adventure Arcade, ranked No, 20.
• Ripley's Believe It Or Not!, known nationally for its kitschy oddities on display, was No. 26.
•  Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud, which is owned by the Dolly Parton empire, was ranked No. 49.
• Crave Golf Club, a miniature golf course, ranked No. 53.
• TopJump Trampoline & Extreme Arena came in at No. 57.
• Alcatraz East Crime Museum was No. 78.
• Pigeon Forge Snow, an indoor snow center, ranked No. 83.
• Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show was only somewhat boring and was ranked No. 93.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has extended the temporary suspension on dogs entering the United States from high-risk countries for dog rabies.
