What's within walking distance and nearby

If you read on less accurate port reviews that you can walk from the cruise terminal to the city of Progreso, be aware that it is a 4-mile long walk in the sweltering Mexican sun. However, the city of Progreso has attractions which can be enjoyed on foot. More below about what to do in Progreso downtown.

How to explore Progreso for cruise travelers

Cruisers planning to explore the top highlights of Progreso port will discover that many attractions can only be explored on a shore excursion.

The city of Mérida is an exception, which is around 26.8 miles (43.2 km) south of Progreso and can be reached by bus in approximately 1 hour. Local buses depart to Mérida every 10 to 15 minutes and cost around $21 Mexican pesos (less than US$1) each way.

Cruise visitors that typically prefer to stay close to the port, will find the city of Progreso very easy to leisurely explore on foot. The shuttle bus drop-off at the Auto Progreso main bus station is no more than a 5-minute walk from the Malecón , the boardwalk, and main street along the vast beach of Progreso.

In one word, unless cruise travelers do not wish to venture farther than the pier and the modern terminal, there are 3 possible ways to discover the principal attractions of Progreso and Yucatan:

  • Book a Shore Excursion
  • Travel On Your Own

Shore excursions (shorex)

All cruise lines offer over 30 shore excursions to all notable highlights of Progreso and Yucatán. There are also many delightful excursions offered by the following reputable private online services:

  • Shore Trips
  • Shore Excursions Group
  • Shore Excursioneer
  • Auto Progreso
  • Shore Excursions Mexico

Explore on your own

To travel on your own, there are local taxis just outside the terminal building. The shuttle bus is the best way to travel to the small city of Progreso to enjoy the beach and restaurants by the Malecón and explore on foot. Cruise visitors that wish to travel to the key highlights on your own will find local buses in the drop-off bus station in Progreso.

In the city of Progreso, on Calle 80, close to the Malecón and the beach you will find scooters for rent and a small sightseeing bus that tours the city. Auto Progresso also offers a city tour on a colorful open bus - El Guajolotero . This panoramic 45-minute sightseeing tour around the city of Progreso costs US$9.00 per person, visiting the town square, the boardwalk, the sheltered port, the marinas, and a couple of local neighborhoods.

How to get around and transportation in Progreso, Yucatán, cruise port

As mentioned already, it is relatively easy to get around and explore Progreso on your own. Progreso and Yucatán have an acceptable transportation network although there are only a couple of few public services: taxis and buses.

Taxis and Uber

Cruise travelers will find a taxi dispatch righty outside the terminal close to the shuttle bus stop. Taxis do not offer specific excursions prices. Local drivers speak reasonable English. Taxis tend to be in excellent condition, are not metered, have AC, are reasonably affordable, and accept both US dollars and local currency.

Uber does operate in Progreso. If traveling to Mérida, Cabify is a good way to get around this large city. Expect to pay around US$50.00 for a taxi to Mérida, one-way, for 4 passengers. To correctly calculate a taxi or Uber fare to Mérida see Taxi Finder or Ride Guru .

Public Buses

Auto Progreso is the main bus operator in the State of Yucatán which is also the provider of the shuttle bus from the cruise pier to the city of Progreso. As mentioned before, the shuttle bus drop-off is at the main bus hub in the city, and from here there are regular buses to most notable highlights of Yucatán. Be aware that Auto Progreso also offers a number of organized tours to the top attractions and prices are radically different. For example, the regular bus fare between Progreso and Mérida costs around US$2.00 (return) while a guided tour will set you back between US$10 and US$26. Auto Progreso Website

Dining, local cuisine, drinks, quick bites, and lunch in Progreso

Cruise passengers looking forward to savoring local food will only find a few convenient places to enjoy delicious lunch, a light meal, or refreshing drinks by the Malecón in Progreso.

You may like to try typical cuisine like marinated meat wrapped in banana leaves (Pibil), stuffed tortillas (Sopes), chiles rellenos, empanadas, ceviche, seafood, lobster, or guacamole.

And local drinks such as mezcal, tequila, and all famous Mexican beers. Broadly speaking, eating and drinking in Progreso is relatively affordable . A full and excellent lunch will cost around US$15.00 per person. The following restaurants are well rated and ordered by distance from the start of the Malecón:

  • Los Henequenes
  • Le Saint Bonnet

Gifts, souvenirs, best shops and shopping in Progreso (Yucatán)

In Progreso cruise port there are quite a few shops selling souvenirs and local gifts. You will find most shops in 3 main areas: the cruise terminal , the central bus station , and in the city center on the Malecón and on Calle 80 (the main street which ends on the beach).

On this main street, the Mercado Popular is a large craft market painted in turquoise cruise visitors will not miss right in front of the 120-foot white lighthouse.

There is little more than a couple of local crafts and Mexican souvenirs for cruise travelers to take home besides hammocks, leather boots and hats, silver jewelry, vanilla, coffee, and hot sauces.

In the duty-free area of the cruise terminal, you will also find fragrances, tobacco, and alcohol with excellent prices , and typical stores like Pirana Joe or Rogers Boots.

Must-know: tourist info, language,and money

Tourist info.

There is a tourist info kiosk at the start of the Malecón, close to the Juan Miguel Castro monument by the beach.

Spanish is the official language. However, as in any major tourist cruise port, English is widely spoken.

Currency and ATMs

The Mexican peso is the official currency. Don't take for granted that the US dollars are accepted as in other Mexican cruise ports like Cozumel or Costa Maya. Like in the US$, the peso uses the $ sign and it can be sometimes confusing when seeing prices in Mexican pesos. When in doubt, makes sure you look for MX, Mex$, or MXN. The peso is divided into 100 centavos (cents). There are 5 different coins: 50 centavos, $1, $2, $5 and $10 pesos; and 6 larger bills: $20, $50, $100, $200, $500 and $1000 pesos.

Cruise travelers will not find an ATM at the terminal. But there is an ATM in the bus station where the shuttle stops in the city center. Close by, on Calle 80 #145, there is an HSBC bank with an ATM.

Credit and debit cards

Credit and debit cards are only accepted in some restaurants in Progreso and in Mérida.

Tipping and Haggling

Tipping: when at a restaurant a tip is appropriate as in the US (15-20%). You can tip taxi drivers but it is not expected. Haggling: it is normal and expected to haggle in any shop except on the duty-free shops with fixed prices in the cruise terminal.

Keep in touch: phones, wi-fi and Post Office

Wi-fi and internet.

There are a couple of bars in the cruise port terminal that offer free wi-fi for customers only. The bus station in Progreso where the shuttle bus drops-off provides free wi-fi.

Mexico Code: 52. To call the US or Canada dial 001 prior to the number. To call other countries dial 00 + country code + area code + local number. T-Mobile offers calls at 25 cents/min. and text at no cost. Other US phone providers may work but is advisable to check with your provider to avoid roaming charges.

Post Office

Cruisers will find the Mexpost (Mexican postal service) in the heart of the city of Progreso on Calle 31 #147, around 900 feet (300 meters) south of the main shuttle bus drop-off.

There are many kinds of ceviche – sushi-grade raw fish marinated in citrus juice – but you can always go the classic route and choose ceviche simple, which pairs simple white fish (usually tilapia) with lime juice, tomatoes, onion and coriander. Free or Cheap Things to Do in Progreso, Mexico on a Cruise

Not long ago, Progreso was a sleepy port town with one claim to fame — one of the longest piers in the world. Its famous pier juts miles out into the Gulf of Mexico.

Today, Progreso still has a lot of that sleepy charm, but it has another claim to fame. It’s quickly becoming a popular port of call for cruise lines. Not only is there plenty for cruise passengers to do — including things that are free or cheap to do — but the city it also has something else going for it: location.

Progreso sits on the northern edge of the Yucatan Peninsula. That location makes it one of the closest ports of call for places like Galveston, New Orleans, and Mobile. Instead of a cruise line sailing a day, visiting Cozumel, and then sailing back home, Progreso adds another port that passengers can visit.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

Today you’ll find that Carnival and Royal Caribbean make stops in the port, with Carnival having the most calls.

If your cruise has a stop in Progreso, you might be wondering what exactly there is for you to do on your cruise, especially things that are within a budget. Below we cover all the things you can do, whether you’re looking for something inexpensive, close to the cruise pier, or simply the biggest adventure possible.

First, let’s cover a little background about the port you should know.

Progreso Location and General Information

As we mentioned, Progreso sits on the Yucatan Peninsula. All told, it’s about 200 miles as the crow flies from Cozumel, so many cruises have these ports back-to-back.

The most distinguishing feature of the city is the long pier. When you dock, you are still miles from the shore. There is a small port complex that features a number of shops and spots to grab a drink or snack.

Want to head into town? After you walk through the port complex there is a stop with buses that run continually from the cruise pier into Progreso. It’s free to ride. The bus heads to the station that’s a few blocks from the beach. When you’re ready to head back, just head back to the station and catch the next bus to the cruise ship.

Overall Progreso is relatively relaxed compared to the hustle and bustle you’ll find in Cozumel. With fewer cruise ships visiting — and not being a major cruise port for a long time — the build-up of the area isn’t as pronounced as you’ll find in Cozumel.

That said, expect it to feel like there are a lot of people in port when you visit if you stick to the tourist areas like the beach and boardwalk. However, just a couple of blocks off the main hot spots and you can see that it’s a fairly quiet town.

For more information about visiting Progreso, see our port guide here .

Free or Cheap Things to Do in Progreso on a Cruise

Want to save some cash and have an inexpensive day in port? There are quite a few things to do that won’t cost a lot. They also generally will be near the foot of the cruise pier. You don’t have to go far to have a good time.

Progreso beach

Progreso Beach With any cruise port in the Caribbean, you’d expect to have a beach nearby to allow you to get some sun, swim, and generally just hang out. Progreso doesn’t disappoint.

As you head down the cruise pier, the main beach that most cruise passengers head to on is on your left. It’s’ white, sandy, clean, and during our visits the water has been gorgeous. That said, the water is known for changing with tides/currents and isn’t always beautiful.

Right alongside the beach is a nice walkway — a malencon in Spanish-speaking countries — that lets you walk the beach and head into the sand where you want.

Feel free to find an open area and spread out your things. One thing you’ll notice is that there are lots of restaurants in this area and many have areas set up in the sand where you can get food and drink service while on the beach.

You’ll also notice a number of chairs and umbrellas set nicely in the sand. Just know that these are either for rent, or for the use of restaurants. If you sit here, you’re expected to order for the restaurant while you enjoy the chair and shade.

Shopping If you want to shop for souvenirs, then the area right near the cruise pier is ideal. Don’t think you’re going to find all the high-end diamond shops like you’ll see in places like Cozumel. Vendors here are smaller; often it’s just someone with a table and a tent.

You’ll find a wide variety of items, everything from clothing to bags, to jewelry, and anything you can imagine with “Mexico” written across it.

Our advice is to bring lots of small bills as you’ll need them. Having correct change is ideal. As well, haggling is perfectly ok. If you can’t find a price you like, don’t be afraid to ask for a lower one or walk away.

Hit the Watering Holes in Progreso The walk between the bus stop and the beach and then down the malencon has a number of small bars and restaurants, many offering lots of drink specials. Want a beer? Expect it to cost a couple of bucks at some of the smaller spots.

One thing to keep in mind is that drinking in port is vastly cheaper than drinking on the cruise ships. If you have a drink package , then by all means get your fill on the ship. For those without, you can save considerable money. A beer on the ship may be $6-8 and a cocktail can be $10-14. That’s several times what you’ll pay in Progreso if you decide to make a stop at the bar.

Tableside guacamole in Progreso

Grab a Meal at a Restaurant Near the port are tons of restaurants offering everything from cheap eats to high-end dining. What’s nice about eating in port is that it can offer a welcome break from the fare on the cruise ship. Even if you love eating on the ship, having the same things day after day can get tiresome.

As for the food near the Progreso pier, you’ll find lots of Mexican fare, often with a focus on seafood. So if you want guacamole or fish tacos, you’ll find several places offering these items.

Keep in mind that restaurants near the cruise pier are going to cater to American passengers, so you might find higher prices than you would elsewhere.

Here are a couple spots near the port with good reviews:

Eladios – A popular beach bar that’s right on the corner of the beach and the cruise pier. Serves a ton of Mexican and seafood dishes.

Lena & Mar – For those wanting a little finer dining, this spot is near the beach but is a step above a beach bar in atmosphere. It serves everything from pizza to ceviche, so anyone can find something they like.

In general, however, you can just stroll along until you find a spot that looks tasty.

Malecon in Progreso, Mexico

Walk the Malecon We’ve mentioned the malecon already, but it deserves a standalone mention as something to do near the cruise port that’s free. The concrete paved walkway runs right down alongside the beach. On the other side is a street, with restaurants and shops.

What’s neat about the area is that there is so much going on. You can watch people playing volleyball on the beach, check out vendor’s tables alongside the walkway, duck into a restaurant for a beer or snack, or just take in the sights and sounds of Mexico.

One thing to keep in mind is that it can get warm and humid, and the sun can be strong. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and don’t forget a hat when you’re walking.

Grab a Drink or Souvenir at the Port While the pier in Progreso is long, you don’t have to go far for something to do. Right at the foot of the ships is a port area with a number of shops. This includes many selling souvenirs but also spots selling ice cold beer, sodas, and water.

If you want to stay close to the ship, you can do some window shopping, grab something cold, and just sit and people-watch while you stretch your legs off the ship.

Take a Souvenir Photo in Front of the Progreso Sign Most Caribbean ports have some sort of colorful sign that’s designed to be a perfect spot to grab a souvenir photo. Progreso is no different. At the port you’ll see the sign right before you walk into the main drag that’s lined with souvenir shops. You can stop and grab a photo when you first get off the ship, but it’s likely to be more calm and with smaller crowds if you wait until the afternoon

Visit the Museum of the Meteorite If you’re a history buff (we’re talking ancient history) or have kids, then visit the Museum of the Meteorite . As you may know, this area is thought to have been near the impact point of a meteor that killed the dinosaurs and changed life on Earth.

Today, Progreso offers this museum you can visit complete with dinosaur sculptures, fossil exhibits, and more, all enclosed in some really neat architecture. Did we mention it’s also an indoor spot where you can cool off? The museum is located about half a mile to the east of the foot of the pier, right along the beach.

There is an admission fee of about $20 for adults and $6 for kids.

Enjoy Quiet Time on the Ship While it’s technically not Progreso, one of the cheap things you can do is spend your day on the ship. While there aren’t as many activities led by the crew like there are on days at sea, things like the pool, spa, fitness center, and more are all available to you. There are also a number of places to eat onboard, depending on your ship.

Many people like to stay on the ship in ports of call as it gives them an opportunity to enjoy the ship without the same crowds that are around when everyone is back on board.

Progreso Excursions

Looking for something to do in Porgreso and don’t mind spending a little bit of money to enjoy yourself? There are some neat excursions and experiences that can take you inland where there are a number of unforgettable experiences.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

Visiting Cenotes The Yucatan is made of porous rock that in some spots has been eroded away. Some of these spots become freshwater pools known as cenotes.

Cenotes are one of the most unique geological features in the Caribbean. The water has been filtered through rock, making it amazingly clear. And because it’s been underground for so long, it’s always cool.

There are a number of excursions offered through the cruise line that will offer trips to nearby cenotes from Progreso. The trips will include transportation and usually have lunch as well.

It offers a chance to swim in these amazing natural features in crystal clear water. It’s something you simply can’t do anywhere else.

Trips to Merida Merida is the capital of Yucatan, and just about 45 minutes inland of Progreso. With a population of nearly 1 million people, it’s a major city. So why visit during a cruise?

For those interested in Mexican history and architecture, Merida has a lot to offer. The city was founded in 1542 — about 235 years before the United States. With so much history, it practically oozes from the buildings. See churches built hundreds of years ago, museums, and art galleries.

The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya ( The Museum of the Mayan World ) is a can’t miss if you are interested in the history of the indigenous people.

Excursions to the area are available through the cruise line or you can arrange private tours yourself.

Experience Mayan Ruins The Yucatan was a hot spot for Mayan civilization, and ruins continue to be discovered even today. For those interested, there are a number of sites within a day trip from Progreso, and the cruise lines offer excursions. Major sites like Uxmal and Chichen Itza are within a few hours’ drive, giving you a chance to see some of the most historical sights on the planet. There’s really nothing like it short of visiting pyramids in Egypt.

Best of all, these trips take care of transportation, tour guide, and admittance into the sites. You only need to worry about bringing your camera. Expect to pay a decent amount (more than $100 per person) for the opportunity, but it’s something you won’t forget.

The Best Cruise Ports of Call in the Western Caribbean

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

 narvikk / Getty Images

A Caribbean cruise is a dream vacation for many travelers. However, when these travelers start planning their cruise , it is difficult to decide which ports of call to visit in the region. Since most cruises sail to either the Eastern Caribbean or the Western Caribbean, the big question soon becomes which is better , an Eastern Caribbean cruise or Western Caribbean cruise? The short answer is that you can have a great vacation at either destination, but there are differences in the ports of call.

This article describes things to do and see at the best cruise ports in the Western Caribbean, which includes the islands west and south of Cuba, along with Mexico, Central America, and Colombia in South America. The good news for cruise travelers is that their cruise ship will most likely have a shore excursion option to participate in the best local activities or see the most interesting historical sites in these ports of call. Alternatively, ships usually dock near a town and/or beach, so those who like to explore on their own can go shopping or enjoy the great beaches and other sites of the Western Caribbean near their ship.

Cozumel, Mexico

Cruise ships have three great Western Caribbean ports of call on the eastern coast and Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. One of the ports, Progreso, is in the Yucatan state of Mexico. The island of Cozumel and Costa Maya, which is about a four-hour drive from Cancun, are located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

Cozumel is an island about 12 miles from Playa del Carmen near the southern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. Cozumel is only about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide but offers diverse activities for visitors. Unsurprisingly, many of these activities are in or on the water, with great beaches, diving, and snorkeling spots. Cozumel also offers history buffs the opportunity to explore the ancient Mayan site of San Gervasio, which is the only archaeological site on Cozumel. However, Cozumel is just a short ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, which has many excellent Mayan sites nearby like Tulum .

Those who like to shop will enjoy exploring all of the shops near the cruise ship pier or they can take a cab or shuttle into the town of San Miguel near the center of the island. If you love dolphins and want to splurge a little, plan a visit to Dolphinaris , where you can feed and/or swim with the dolphins.

Progreso, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Progreso is on the northern side of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, only about 30 miles from Merida. The port is very distinctive because of its pier, which reaches about 4 miles out into the sea. Completed in 1989, it's the world's longest pier. Fortunately for cruise visitors, a free shuttle will take them into town.

Progreso is one of the newer cruise ports in Mexico, and ships offer dozens of great shore excursions. Visitors who appreciate Mayan history can visit the archaeological sites of Dzibilchaltun, Uxmal, or Chichen Itza , which was voted one of the New 7 Wonders of the World , and the only one in North America.

Other shore excursion activities include cave snorkeling, golfing, hiking, fishing, paddle boarding, riding in a beach buggy, or exploring a cave. Since the town of Merida is nearby, visitors can easily learn more about the history and culture of the region.

Costa Maya, Mexico

Costa Maya is also on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, but about 100 miles further down the Peninsula from Playa del Carmen. It's near the border of Mexico and Belize. This region of Mexico is not as developed as other Mexican ports of call, but it does have pristine beaches and spectacular Mayan ruins hidden in the nearby jungle. These ruins are not as over-visited as others in Mexico, which makes them even more fascinating. Many cruise passengers specifically want to visit Chacchoben, an ancient city dating back to the 4th century A.D.

The Costa Maya area also features many different types of birds, monkeys, and even jaguars in its jungle setting. Those who enjoy more active fun will enjoy water sports, biking, snorkeling, and paddle boarding.

The Costa Maya village and cruise facility are in the small town of Mahahual in the southern corner of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. This village was purpose-built to attract cruise ships back in 2001 and significantly renovated after a hurricane in 2007. Cruise travelers will love the numerous shops, bars, and restaurants near the pier, and it's an inexpensive taxi ride into the shopping district of the town of Mahahual.

Most cruise lines will have Costa Maya shore excursions similar to those of Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Lines.

Grand Cayman Island

Although cruise ships have to tender passengers ashore at Grand Cayman Island, it's still one of the most popular cruise ports in the Caribbean. Grand Cayman has many features that cruise travelers love — great shopping, spectacular beaches, and fun bars. The flat island also has unique places to visit like Stingray City , the turtle farm, and Hell.

Stingray City is a sandbar where stingrays come to be fed. Small boats take vacationers and cruise travelers out to the sandbar and you can snorkel, SCUBA, feed the stingrays by hand, or just watch them in the crystal clear water. The turtle farm on Grand Cayman has all sorts of sea turtles and provides an opportunity for kids (and adults) to learn more about sea turtles. Hell is a small village that sits in the middle of a rocky outcropping that looks almost burned (like Hell). People come to buy postcards and t-shirts and have their photo taken by the "Hell" sign.

Even with all these unique places to see, most cruise travelers head to one of the Grand Cayman beaches (Seven Mile Beach is very popular) to swim or sit on the white sand and have a cold drink.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Jamaica is a large island in the Western Caribbean with three popular cruise ports on the north coast — Montego Bay, Falmouth, and Ocho Rios. All the ports in Jamaica seem to have aggressive vendors, but ignoring them and just saying "no thank you" usually works.

Many travelers consider Montego Bay the island's capital of tourism. It is Jamaica's second largest city and is famous for its lively atmosphere, great duty-free shopping, and luxurious golf and beach resorts. Although some of the best beaches are for resort guests only, cruise passengers can enjoy Doctor's Cave Beach or take an excursion to the famous Seven Mile Beach in Negril (less than 2 hours away).

Montego Bay has some fascinating historic plantation homes, called Great Houses, that are open to tourists. Visitors can also arrange tours to popular sites near other Jamaican ports like Dunn's River Falls , which is closest to the port of Ocho Rios.

Falmouth, Jamaica

Falmouth is a small town of about 10,000 residents on the northern coast of Jamaica about 18 miles east of Montego Bay. Its most famous citizen is Usain Bolt, who is an Olympic champion and world-record sprinter. This historic town with its Georgian-style architecture became well-known to cruise travelers when Royal Caribbean completed its $200 million Falmouth Cruise Terminal in 2011. Since the terminal has pier space for two large cruise ships, its population almost doubles when two ships are in port.

The cruise terminal has enough bars, restaurants, and shopping to keep most visitors happy. Although many visitors never venture outside the terminal area, cruise ships offer excursions that feature Jamaica's history, culture, or natural wonders.

The town of Falmouth provides some good local color and handicrafts for those who want to experience the real Jamaica.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

TripSavvy / Anna Haines

Ocho Rios is Jamaica's third cruise ship port of call. Also located on the north shore of the island, Ocho Rios is about 48 miles from Montego Bay and 30 miles from Falmouth.

Like other Jamaican ports, Ocho Rios offers plenty of shopping, eating, and drinking venues, but many visitors take a ship's shore excursion to one of the three popular sites nearby — Dunn's River Falls, Mystic Mountain, or James Bond beach.

Ocho Rios has many waterfalls in the surrounding mountains and jungle, but Dunn's River Falls is the one most people want to visit and climb the many terraces that stretch 600 feet up. Be sure to wear water shoes as the rocks are difficult to walk on and slippery.

Mystic Mountain is also near Ocho Rios and offers many activities (for a fee) like zip lines, bobsledding, or a chairlift canopy tour over the rainforest. Great fun for those looking for some adventure.

The James Bond beach is a 20-minute drive from Ocho Rios, and the beach got its name because of its proximity to Goldeneye, the villa where Ian Fleming wrote many of the James Bond novels.

Belize City, Belize

In addition to Mexico and the islands of the Western Caribbean, Central and South America are also visited by cruise ships on their itineraries. Belize City is the largest city in the Central American country of Belize, which was called British Honduras until 1973 and gained its independence from Great Britain in 1981.

Belize City doesn't have as much shopping as other Western Caribbean ports, but cruise ships have terrific shore excursions inland like tubing in a river inside a cave and zip lining over the jungle. Other popular activities focus on the fascinating, diverse culture of Belize, visiting ancient Mayan sites, hiking in the jungle, canoeing, kayaking, or visiting a museum or wildlife sanctuary.

Harvest Caye, Belize

Harvest Caye is Norwegian Cruise Line's private resort on the coast of Belize. Unlike Belize City, which requires tendering ashore, cruise ships can dock at Harvest Caye. The 75-acre resort has a huge swimming pool, beach with cabanas, canoeing, kayaking, zip lining, parasailing, and paddle boarding. Harvest Caye also has some nice retail shops.

Many cruise guests whose ships stopover at Harvest Caye will spend their time enjoying the resort's activities. However, those who want to explore more of Belize can take shore excursions that include river tubing in a rainforest, exploring mangrove lagoons, or visiting Mayan archaeological sites.

Roatan, Bay Islands of Honduras

Honduras is south of Belize and Roatan is the most developed of all the Bay Islands of Honduras. Cruise ships dock either in the capital of Coxen Hole or nearby Mahogany Bay. Both these cruise terminals have plenty of shops and things to do within walking distance, but many visitors want to go snorkeling or diving on the huge reef that the Bay Islands are deservedly famous for.

Like other Caribbean islands, Roatan has a fascinating history and local culture, so cruise guests who don't like the beach might want to book a tour that provides an overview of historical Roatan. Another option is to take a small boat to explore the mangrove forests, which are filled with wildlife.

Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena, Colombia is the only Western Caribbean port in South America. With almost one million residents, it's quite different than the other Western Caribbean stopovers for cruise ships. Sailing into the city is quite beautiful, so be sure to be out on the deck.

Most tours in Cartagena focus on the old town historical sites or the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, which is a fortress started in the 16th century that took over 150 years to complete. Those who want to go to a South American beach can find several lovely ones near the city. Travelers who love their jewelry will know that Colombia gems (especially emeralds) are famous. It's not surprising that the city has many jewelry stores.

One other fun place to shop in Cartagena is the Las Bovedas shops, which are 23 dungeons built in the 18th century that used to hold prisoners. Today these dungeons are shops holding souvenirs.

Colon, Panama

Although the Panama Canal is a destination in itself, Panama has ports of call on both the Western Caribbean and the Pacific Oceans. Many Western Caribbean cruises have partial transits of the Panama Canal that include the Gatun Lock which links Lake Gatun with the Caribbean Sea.

Colon, Panama is the Panamanian port of call on the Caribbean and Panama's second largest city. Colon doesn't have as many attractions as Cartagena, but most cruise passengers do not have a long time in the city. After all, they've come to Panama to see the Panama Canal.

For those with more time, Panama has some beautiful beaches in the Caribbean with bird watching, diving, and snorkeling. Those who love history should spend a few hours exploring the ruins at Fort San Lorenzo, a 16th-century fort that overlooks the Chagres River.

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

Most tours of Costa Rica will focus on the interior or the magnificent beaches on the Pacific side. However, the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is filled with exotic wildlife (like sloths) and the main port of call is at Puerto Limon .

Puerto Limon is off the beaten path from other towns in Costa Rica, but cruise travelers who love exploring the great outdoors will love the rainforest and trails at Braulio Carillo National Park and the waterfalls, exotic wildlife, and spectacular scenery of Veragua Rainforest Park near Puerto Limon.

Many of us are partial to sloths, and the Limon province even has a sloth sanctuary , where you can learn everything you wanted to know about these fascinating creatures.

Key West, USA

Most cruise cities in the USA are primarily for embarking and disembarking passengers. However, one popular port of call for ships sailing the Western Caribbean is Key West, Florida . It's the southernmost point in the continental United States and has its own special flavor, with a fascinating history, bars, and one of the world's best sunsets (according to their brochures).

Key West is a unique city with its lovely old residences in the historic district, the home of Ernest Hemingway (with its six-toed cats), and President Truman's Little White House. Many ships dock right at Mallory Square, and those with balcony cabins overlooking the pier can watch tourists and locals gather in the square to watch the sunset.

The sunsets at Mallory Square are often magnificent, but those on cruise ships are treated to great sunsets almost every evening.

Royal Caribbean-owned cruise line just announced a vaccine requirement

Several cruise lines have started announcing vaccination requirements for guests and crew members as the industry looks to restart after the the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, cruise ships that were mid-trip began facing  COVID-19 related turmoils as the virus began trickling around the world,  leaving passengers stuck, infected, or dead. Shortly after, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a no-sail order, which was later replaced by  its “Framework for Conditional Sailing Order,”  a compilation of protocols needed for cruising to resume again by November 1.

This sailing order was again  updated  on April 2. These new guidelines didn’t reflect the cruise industry’s hope of a  sailing return by July , but did recommend cruise lines to establish a timeline for crew and port workers to get the vaccine.

Despite this updated framework – and pent-up demand for  highly anticipated cruise ships  and  trips  – the official return of cruising still remains in limbo. Presently, no major US cruises will be welcoming passengers until May, but companies are constantly  extending this pause on sailing .

But as  the COVID-19 vaccine  continues to be distributed across the globe, this could soon change.

“If we start to see vaccines become more widely available, and if the  vaccines are being administered  in a far more efficient manner than they have been, I think it would be reasonable for the cruise lines to say a vaccine is required,” Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst and president of the Atmosphere Research Group, told Insider in an interview.

However, vaccine rollout and accessibility  has been a notorious struggle  around the world. As a result, Harteveldt notes that it may be “counterproductive” for major cruise lines like Carnival and Norwegian to require its guests to receive the vaccine if sailings actually resume in the next few months instead of later in the year, say July.

ut over the last month, cruise lines have become increasingly vocal about the vaccine. While some companies – such as Carnival and its Holland America line –  are “reviewing” the different vaccines , several others have already announced vaccination protocols for guests and crew members.

These are all the cruise lines with vaccine-related mandates so far:

Saga Cruises

On January 21, United Kingdom-based Saga Cruises announced that it would require all of its passengers to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks before a trip. Saga primarily caters to passengers over 50-years-old.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean expects to require its crew members to receive the vaccine before sailings return, a spokesperson told Insider.

On March 1, the cruise line also announced its first  “fully vaccinated” cruise aboard the Odyssey of the Seas,  which will be sailing in May from Israel. Both crew members and guests over 16 years old will have to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to sail on the upcoming cruise.

“Royal Caribbean’s decision to come to Israel is a significant expression of  confidence in our policy ,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in the  press release announcing the cruise . “Just as we made Israel the world champion in vaccines, we will make it the world champion in economics and tourism in the post-coronavirus era.”

On  March 19 , Royal Caribbean announced a similar series of seven-night sailings from July to August aboard its Adventure of the Seas ship. These summertime cruises will bring guests from Nassau, Bahamas to islands like the Grand Bahama, Cozumel, Mexico, and Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Like the Israel-based Odyssey of the Seas sailings, every adult passenger interested in this upcoming Adventure of the Seas collection will have to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Guests under 18-years-old will instead have to test negative for the virus.

Icon of the Seas

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas.

Scheduled to set sail in early 2024, the Icon of the Seas is one of the most celebrated and anticipated new cruise ships across all the major cruise lines. This Icon Class vessel was built to dazzle and entertain cruise passengers of all ages, and it features eight unique neighborhoods, seven pools and the largest waterpark at sea.

In total, Icon of the Seas offers 2,805 individual staterooms with space for 7,600 guests at maximum and 2,350 crew members. The vessel is 1,198 feet long with gross tonnage of 250,800.

  • Sails to: The Icon of the Seas will offer alternating seven-night sailings between the Eastern and Western Caribbean. The vessel's Western Caribbean itinerary includes stops at Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, Roatan in Honduras and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas . The alternative itinerary also stops at the cruise line's private island , as well as Basseterre in St. Kitts and Nevis and Charlotte Amelie in St. Thomas. All itineraries will depart from Miami .

Cruisers will find the basic interior, ocean view and balcony staterooms they would expect. The ship also features 179 suites that vary in size and in terms of their features, with some really spacious and over-the-top options. For example, the vessel's Ultimate Family Townhouse (UL) is more than 1,700 square feet with three stories, a multi-level slide, an outdoor space with a ping pong table and more.
  • Dining options: Icon of the Seas offers 11 included dining options plus room service that's available 24/7. Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas is another vessel that is set to debut in 2024 with sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida. This Oasis Class ship will offer up a total of 2,834 guest rooms and is 1,188 feet in length and 236,860 gross tons in size.

The ship has space for 5,668 passengers at double occupancy and eight different neighborhoods with cabins for guests. Interestingly, this huge ship will not offer seven-night sailings throughout the Caribbean and will instead focus on offering three-night and four-night itineraries, at least at first.

  • Sails to: The all-new Utopia of the Seas will offer shorter sailings to the Bahamas. The ship's three-night sailings will stop only at the cruise line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, whereas four-night sailings from Port Canaveral stop at the cruise line's private island and at Nassau, Bahamas.
  • Cabin types: The Utopia of the Seas has interior rooms, ocean view rooms and balcony rooms just like other ships. Upgraded room options also abound and include a range of luxury suites at sea. For example, you can book the iconic Ultimate Family Suite, a Solarium Suite with Wraparound Windows, a Royal Loft Suite and more.
  • Dining options: There are 10 different included dining experiences on the Utopia of the Seas, with room service also offered 24 hours a day. These include a Main Dining Room experience, several cafe options, a pizzeria, a coastal kitchen with California and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine and more. In addition, there are 10 different specialty restaurants that can also be booked on the Utopia of the Seas, and a Starbucks is on board. Special dining experiences include a hibachi and sushi restaurant, a seafood restaurant, a Chef's Table experience for up to 16 diners at a time, a Johnny Rockets and more.
  • Features: Utopia of the Seas has everything you would expect in a new Oasis Class ship from Royal Caribbean. For example, passengers will find five huge pools, eight hot tubs, three water slides, 23 different bars and two on-board casinos. Other features include an ice-skating rink, two rock climbing walls, a zip line, a basketball court, two FlowRider Surf simulators and of course the line's famous AquaTheater. Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Utopia of the Seas also features special spaces for kids and teens, including dedicated clubs, an Imagination Studio and an on-board arcade.

The Oasis-class ship features 2,867 staterooms with a total guest capacity of 7,084. There are also eight unique neighborhoods for cruisers to choose from, each with its own decor and flair.

This Royal Caribbean vessel is also huge at 1,188 feet long and 235,600 gross tons. A total of 2,204 crew members run the ship and assist guests.

  • Dining options: Nine complimentary dining options are included on the Wonder of the Seas, with a main dining room, a buffet option and plenty of other eateries available to grab a bite to eat. There are also 11 unique specialty restaurants on board, including a steakhouse and a seafood restaurant, a Johnny Rockets, a sushi and hibachi restaurant and Giovanni's Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar. For coffee lovers, a Starbucks is also on board.
  • Features: The Wonder of the Seas has its own Central Park, along with 11 different bars, as well as special kids and teens-only areas like a social club and an arcade. Other notable features include the vessel's AquaTheater, rock-climbing walls, whirlpools, laser tag and more. There are also 19 swimming pools, an ice rink and a casino on the Wonder of the Seas.

Odyssey of the Seas

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas is a Quantum Ultra Class cruise ship that's smaller than the other newest vessels from the line. The impressive ship completed its first sailing in 2021 when it became the first ship of its class to sail from the United States. Odyssey of the Seas currently departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and other ports and offers a range of six-night and seven-night sailings throughout the Caribbean in the coming months.

Up to 4,198 guests can sail on the Odyssey of the Seas with double occupancy, and 1,612 crew members are on board to tend to their every need. The ship is approximately 1,138 feet long and is 167,704 gross tons.

  • Sails to: Odyssey of the Seas will depart from various ports in the United States and elsewhere in the world in the coming years. For example, there are upcoming six-night sailings from Fort Lauderdale that include stops in Labadee, Haiti and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in addition to Perfect Day at CocoCay. The vessel will complete a 14-day transatlantic cruise in April and May of 2024, which begins in Fort Lauderdale and ends in Rome, Italy. From there, the vessel will offer Greek Islands cruises from Rome before moving back to Cape Liberty (New York), New Jersey in the fall of 2024. At that point, itineraries will include stops in Port Canaveral, Florida, Nassau in the Bahamas and Perfect Day at CocoCay.
  • Cabin types: Odyssey of the Seas offers interior staterooms, ocean view rooms and balcony staterooms. Guests can also book interior rooms with a virtual balcony that boasts a floor-to-ceiling virtual view of the outdoors. Over-the-top suites available on the Odyssey include an Owner's Loft Suite, a Royal Loft Suite, a Grand Loft Suite and more.
  • Dining options: As a smaller vessel with considerably fewer passengers than Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class and Icon Class ships, Odyssey of the Seas has fewer dining options overall. Guests can dine at seven included eateries including a main dining room, a bistro, a cafe and the main ship buffet. There are also seven specialty restaurants and experiences on board including the Chef's Table, a Chops Grille and a sushi and hibachi restaurant. Like other newer ships from Royal Caribbean, the Odyssey also has its own Starbucks.
  • Features: The Odyssey has eight dedicated bars and lounges on board, bumper cars, laser tag, a rock-climbing wall, an outdoor movie screen and a casino, along with kid and teen features like an arcade, a kids' splash area and a social club. A FlowRider surf simulator is on board, as well as a sky diving simulator. Note that the Odyssey of the Seas doesn't have an AquaTheater like Oasis Class ships.

I spent $2,000 for 7 nights in a 179-square-foot room on one of the world's largest cruise ships. Take a look inside my cabin.

  • I booked a stateroom on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, one of the biggest cruise ships.
  • For $2,000 a week, the 179-square-foot cabin had a private bathroom, a king-size bed, and a view.
  • I thought I'd feel cramped in the room, but it had everything I needed and left no space unused.

Insider Today

In April 2022, I cruised on board Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . At the time, it was the largest cruise ship in the world , but the title has since been replaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas .

During my voyage, the ship sailed to Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas .

For $2,000, I spent seven nights in an ocean-view stateroom on deck eight. The cruise was on sale, as it was originally priced at $3,000. Take a look inside the 179-square-foot space.

My room was a mid-tier cabin at the front of deck eight.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

I booked a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms , which have no window. It's a category below staterooms with a balcony , and two steps below a suite.

My cabin was on the same deck as Central Park, an outdoor space with 20,000 plants.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

I thought it was the most relaxing area on the ship, so I enjoyed being close by.

When I stepped inside my stateroom, I was surprised at how big it felt.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

Right away, I thought the cabin made great use of a small space.

To operate most of the electricity in the room, I had to insert my room key into a slot on the wall.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

I appreciated the energy-saving system.

On one side of the room, I had a mirror and a desk with several outlets to charge electronics with USB, American, and European ports.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

I thought the desk was useful for eating, as well as storing daily flyers about the day's events.

Next to the desk, a set of drawers included a cabinet with a minifridge inside.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

The desk drawers were mostly empty aside from a hair dryer, which I didn't end up using.

Across from the desk, I had a couch positioned in between two closets.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

Inside each closet, I found a rack of hangers, shelving, and a small safe. I thought it was plenty of space for a weeklong journey

Next to the couch and desk area, a small bathroom used clever storage hacks, like placing the trash can and toilet paper under the counter.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

In the bathroom, there were two glasses, a bar of soap, and a two-in-one hair and body wash.

At the top of the shower, a pullout clothing line was useful for drying my bathing suits.

Each night, my stateroom attendant replenished towels and brought flyers and schedules for the next day.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

Sometimes, the towels were folded creatively to look like animals.

I noticed that my king-size bed at the back of the room was actually two twin beds pushed together.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

All Royal Caribbean cabins come with this configuration, according to its website , so they may be separated for additional guests. I often woke up in the crevice.

A large flat-screen TV was mounted across from the bed with storage hooks below.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

Skinny nightstands on either side of the bed held lamps, charging ports, and a room phone on one side.

Because I booked an ocean-view room, I was able to look out over the front of the ship from a window above my bed.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

The window was equipped with an electronic shade that could be opened during the day for grand views and closed when I was ready to sleep.

While I thought the room might have been a tight space for a couple with a lot of luggage or a family, it was just right for me.

royal caribbean yucatan cruise

And watching the sun rise over the Caribbean Sea from the comfort of my room was the best part.

Turmoil in the Caribbean has prompted the Royal Caribbean cruise line to “temporarily make adjustments to sailings” to a popular destination in the area.

As Haiti continues to be destabilized by vicious gangs, Royal Caribbean will not sail to the peninsula of Labadee on the country’s north coast in May, the Independent reports .

Royal Caribbean’s travel pause to Labadee began in mid-March, as airports closed and flights were canceled .

At the time, Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his planned resignation amid the upheaval.

Royal Caribbean’s “Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti,” a spokesperson for the cruise line told the Independent.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew and communities we visit are our top priority,” the rep added.

Royal Caribbean is pausing trips to the popular destination of Labadee in Haiti.

Ships and itineraries facing disruption in May include Allure of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas, per the Independent.

“We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly,” Royal Caribbean said in its statement.

The US State Department began warning Americans not to travel to parts of Haiti , like the capital, Port-au-Prince, in July 2023 because of kidnappings, crime, civil unrest and poor healthcare.

Earlier this month, private operations were launched by former New York Giant Jack Brewer to get Americans in Haiti out safely .

Royal Caribbean is tightly monitoring the situation in Haiti.

As the situation worsens, Port-au-Prince has been described as a “battlefield,” where notorious gang leaders are deliberately burning down homes.

Gangs have also stormed a prison and helped about 4,000 prisoners escape .

Millions are struggling with hunger as many ports and supply routes are cut off while more than 360,000 people have been displaced by the violence, according to the United Nations.

Best Time To Go To Casino Royale

By Donna Heiderstadt | Published on April 23, 2024

One of the many incredible things that make a Royal Caribbean cruise ship the floating equivalent of a world-class resort — like those in Las Vegas, Aruba, The Bahamas or other destinations offering on-site gaming — is that you're never more than a few hundred feet from the vibrant and buzzing Casino Royale℠. That means the best time to go to the casino is pretty much any time it's open and you feel like playing.

Perhaps your game is blackjack or three-card poker. Or maybe you love the feeling of rolling the dice on the craps table or betting that the tiny white ball will land on your lucky number on the roulette wheel. In addition to the usual table games, Casino Royale also features a fantastic selection of slot and video poker machines waiting for you to collect on a winning bet.

If you're considering taking a cruise and hitting the tables or slots is a favorite vacation pastime, there will be plenty of opportunities to test your skill and luck while onboard. Casino Royale is available on all Royal Caribbean cruise ships, and offers thousands of square feet of Las Vegas-style action at sea — whether you're cruising the Caribbean, the Mediterranean or even past glaciers in Alaska. You must be 18 or older to play on most cruises, and 21 or older on Alaska sailings.

So when is the best time to go to the casino? Both the gaming and the people-watching at Casino Royale peak after dinner each night when the blackjack tables are hot, the slot machines are whirring, the roulette wheels are spinning in a mesmerizing blur and the craps dice are tumbling as players anticipate what they'll land on.

Not everyone, however, loves to hone their gaming skills in the middle of so much action. What's the best time to go to the casino if you prefer a more mellow vibe? There are plenty of opportunities to visit when the experience will be more to your liking. Here are our top suggestions for the best time to go to Casino Royale.

Right After The Casino Opens On Sea Days

Navigator of the Seas Casino Table Games

Sea days aboard Royal Caribbean cruise ships are notable for the many possibilities they offer: relax and sleep in, be wellness-focused and enjoy a massage, socialize and sip mojitos at the pool bar or be the player who's the first one at the tables in Casino Royale when it opens, as that's when complimentary gaming lessons are offered. Since a cruise ship casino can only operate in international waters (it must close when docked in a port, with very few exceptions), sea days offer the perfect opportunity for early-bird gamblers who feel that Lady Luck is most on their side when the sun is shining.

Is it better to go to the casino in the morning? It is on a sea day if you love slots because you'll enjoy easy access to all of your favorite machines as you stroll the casino floor, morning coffee in hand, and decide which one feels like it's ready to hit the jackpot.

Some blackjack players love to play on sea days right after Casino Royale's table games open, usually at 10 a.m., because they get their pick of the tables. It's also a great time to enjoy a speedier and more intense blackjack game, with fewer players at each table.

Anytime You Want If You're A Slots Player

Royal Caribbean's ships feature thousands of reel machines, video slots and hybrids fleetwide — that's across 28 ships — but if you're a slots aficionado , be sure to book an Oasis Class ship. Why? You can play the slots 24/7 on these five ships:  Oasis of the Seas® ,  Allure of the Seas® ,  Harmony of the Seas® ,  Symphony of the Seas®  and  Wonder of the Seas® . A sixth Oasis Class ship,  Utopia of the Seas℠ , will debut in 2024.

Each ship features hundreds of slot machines in its Casino Royale, many of which rank among the largest and most dazzling casinos at sea. For details on 24/7 play, simply see the casino host.

Whenever There's A Show

Evenings aboard Royal Caribbean ships are when the onboard ambiance most closely evokes that of the world's most celebrated entertainment-and-gambling mecca: Las Vegas. That's because Royal Caribbean is also known for the live theatrical options it offers — all on a complimentary basis, making these productions extremely popular.

The result? When vast numbers of Oasis Class guests head to the Royal Theater to enjoy a performance of a hit Broadway musical such as  Cats ,  Grease ,  Mamma Mia!  or  Saturday Night Fever , Casino Royale tends to empty out a bit. This makes showtime the perfect moment to try your luck.

In addition, the cruise line's fleetwide headliner shows, which feature a wide range of world-class acts — vocal groups, magicians, impressionists, acrobats and more — are especially effective at drawing in guests and freeing up space in the casino.

But that's not all. Oasis Class ships also feature ice-skating performances in Studio B and diving shows at the AquaTheater, both of which draw large crowds. Onboard Quantum Class ships, the Two70® performance space attracts passengers with its multimedia productions featuring daring aerials and supercool soundtracks.

Every ship in the fleet has a Royal Theater, where the vessel's ensemble of singers and dancers perform in production shows. This means that guests who just dabble in blackjack, place an occasional roulette bet or pass the time with penny slots are often pulled in another direction by the opportunity to enjoy complimentary, high-quality theatrical entertainment.

Altogether, you can expect smaller crowds at the tables and less competition for your favorite machines when there's a show happening. Simply check the Royal Caribbean app or the daily printed activities schedule,  Cruise Compass , to see what time the most popular onboard productions — headliner acts, Broadway shows and high-dive performances — are scheduled and then hit Casino Royale at the designated hour to get in a winning groove.

When Everyone Heads To Bed

While cruise ships offer entertainment into the wee hours, the majority of passengers tend to make their way back to their staterooms around midnight. Most of us aren't night owls when we have to answer to a morning alarm, right? Even though a cruise is a vacation from everyday responsibilities, shore excursion meeting times are typically early in the morning for anyone who plans to explore that day's port of call.

As a result, the post-midnight hours are often when the most focused gamblers come out to play. While cruise ship casinos don't stay open 24/7 like they do in Las Vegas, Casino Royale typically closes late (generally 2 a.m. or 3 a.m.), and the casino can stay open until the ship is about to arrive in port. That means if you feel like the odds are most often in your favor when most people are sound asleep, you're in luck.

While Docked At Perfect Day At Cococay

Are you one that prefers a hot seat to beach heat? A winning hand to sandy feet? If your Bahamas itinerary includes a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, both are possible. While the ship is docked at Royal Caribbean's spectacular private island in The Bahamas, you may have the option to return to the ship early (or just stay onboard the whole day) to enjoy your favorite gaming action at Casino Royale, since it's able to stay open while in port there.

Imagine this perfect day: Enjoy a morning of relaxation as you chill on one of Perfect Day at CocoCay's white-sand beaches while enjoying a piña colada (covered by your onboard beverage package) or socialization at the exclusive adults-only Hideaway Beach - the ultimate beachfront party in paradise. Then head back to your ship, shower off any lingering sand and hit Casino Royale for some laid-back afternoon action at the tables or slots.

Anytime The Vibe Is To Your Liking

What is the least busy day at the casino? There's not an easy answer. The times when Casino Royale will be busiest — from around 7 p.m. to midnight as well as afternoons on sea days — are pretty predictable. But the days when it's likely to be the least crowded depends largely on the itinerary, the time of year and the passenger mix.

In general, Casino Royale will have fewer gamblers on sunny sea days in warm-weather regions than on cloudy sea days in cooler locales. Or perhaps the passenger mix on a particular voyage doesn't include a high percentage of casinogoers. In other words, if you pass Casino Royale and the vibe is to your liking, go for it!

Royal Caribbean Stock Can Cruise Higher After Earnings. What Investors Need to Hear.

Royal Caribbean Group needs to calm market fears when it reports earnings Thursday, if the stock is to sail higher again.

It was a bumper 2023 for the cruise industry as international travel demand surged after Covid-19 pandemic restrictions were lifted, but Royal Caribbean has even greater expectations for 2024.

The stock was the one of the best-performing in the S&P 500 last year—its 162% rise was only bettered by Nvidia and Meta Platforms. However, the Royal Caribbean is having a tougher year than last and investors need reassurance, more than anything, when the cruise operator reports earnings before the open.

The company raised its full-year earnings outlook to a midpoint of $10 a share in February, citing strong bookings demand and elevated consumer spending onboard its ships. Investors bought into management’s optimism—the stock was down 11% in 2024 before that guidance hike and is now up 5.5% for the year through Tuesday’s close, although it has fallen close to 2% in April.

Its peers have struggled more, Carnival is down 20% this year and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has fallen 2.5%.

“Despite having positive booking momentum in 2024, the [cruise] stocks have underperformed. The debate around peak cruise and implications of moderating pricing has persisted,” Melius Research analyst Conor Cunningham said earlier this month. “Regardless, the cruise upward revisions cycle should continue across the group—we continue to favor Royal Caribbean,” he added.

For the first quarter, analysts surveyed by FactSet are expecting the cruise operator to report adjusted earnings of $1.33 a share on revenue of $3.7 billion. That would be the company’s first March-quarter profit since 2019 and a good start to the year.

But it’s the company’s second-quarter guidance and subsequent commentary around demand and pricing that will tell investors whether the full-year outlook remains on track or if it needs to be altered.

Mizuho analysts, led by Ben Chaiken, initiated coverage of the stock with a Buy rating earlier this month and said first-quarter earnings could be a positive event for the stock.

Chaiken said there was a fear of price deceleration, implied by guidance for the second half of the year from all three cruise operators—Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian. He also flagged a slowdown in price growth for hotel stays across the wider travel industry but said trends in cruises were better than expected, noting it was in an earlier stage of the pandemic recovery than other travel sectors.

“This is in the context of cruise stocks trading on what we feel are implicitly lower estimates, making the setup compelling,” he said. He maintained a Buy rating with a price target of $164, implying a 20% upside to Tuesday’s closing price.

Royal Caribbean has faced choppier waters so far in 2024 but Thursday’s earnings could lead to the smoother sailing ahead.
