Neil Young and Crazy Horse Announce ‘Love Earth’ American Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are hitting the road for their first proper tour in ten years. It kicks off on April 24 in San Diego, California, and wraps up on May 23 in Chicago, Illinois. Ticket sales for the subscribers of The Neil Young Archives begin today. The general on-sale starts February 16.

The group is also releasing the live album FU##IN’ UP , which was recorded at concerts last year. “In the spirit it’s offered…made this for the Horse lovers,” Young said in a statement. “I can’t stop it. The horse is runnin’. What a ride we have. I don’t want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share.”

The group was joined by guitarist Micah Nelson in 2023 when they played a couple of special shows at the Roxy in Los Angeles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Los Angeles club. The concerts featured complete performances of 1969’s Everybody Knows This is Nowhere and 1975’s Tonights the Night. That same lineup played a private show on November 4, 2023, for Canada Goose CEO Dani Reiss at the Rivoli in Toronto, Ontario. They performed Ragged Glory nearly in its entirety that evening.

Young stayed completely off the road from 2010 to 2022 due to Covid concerns, the longest break of his six-decade career. He re-emerged in the summer of 2023 with a solo Coastal tour that focused on neglected songs from his vast catalog.

The exact lineup of Crazy Horse taking part in the Love Earth tour has not been revealed, but Nils Lofgren will be busy much of the time touring with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Micah Nelson will likely play in his place.

Neil Young +   Crazy Horse have announced a run of spring 2024 shows billed as the Love Earth Tour . The 16-show amphitheater run, produced by Live Nation , marks the first full tour for Young and his long-running, on-and-off backing band in a decade.

The Neil Young + Crazy Horse 2024 Love Earth Tour is set to kick off with two shows in San Diego, CA on April 24th and 25th before making its way to Phoenix, AZ (4/27), Austin, TX (5/1), Dallas, TX (5/2), Huntsville, AL (5/5), Atlanta, GA (5/7), Franklin, TN (5/8), Bristow, VA (5/11), Camden, NJ (5/12), Queens, NY (5/14), Mansfield, MA (5/17), Bridgeport, CT (5/18), Toronto, ON (5/20), Clarkston, MI (5/22), and Chicago, IL (5/23). Neil Young + Crazy Horse are also scheduled to perform at the second weekend of  New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in New Orleans, LA (5/4).

Neil Young + Crazy Horse have been relatively active in the studio in recent years—they recorded three albums over the past five years (2019’s Colorado , 2021’s Barn , and 2022’s World Record )—but have largely shied away from performing live. In 2023, they performed a pair of intimate shows at West Hollywood, CA’s  The Roxy in honor of the venue’s 50th birthday in addition to a show at  Rivoli in Toronto.

The Crazy Horse band lineup has shifted gradually since forming in the 1960s. The most recent version of the band’s lineup featured Neil Young (guitar, vocals) alongside Ralph Molina (drums), Billy Talbot (bass), and  Nils Lofgren (guitar).  Micah Nelson , the son of  Willie Nelson who performs under the moniker  Particle Kid , also joined the band for the two 2023 shows at The Roxy. While the band lineup for the  Love Earth Tour has not been officially announced, Lofgren will be on tour with  Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band during that time, leading fans to speculate that Nelson will take his place for the run.

I don’t want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share.”

The album, comprised of nine songs spread across two LPs, will be released in limited edition colored vinyl for  Record Store Day on April 20th ahead of its multiple-format general release on April 26th. More information on  FU##IN’ UP can be found on  Neil Young Archives .

To get face-value tickets into the hands of fans, people who purchase tickets for the Neil Young + Crazy Horse Love Earth Tour via Ticketmaster and can’t attend the show will have the option to re-sell their ticket to other fans at the original price paid using Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange. A valid bank account or debit card within the country of the event is required to sell tickets on the Face Value Exchange. More information on how the Ticketmaster Exchange works is available here .

Young also announced a new album with the band,  FU##IN' UP , set for release on April 20, four days before the tour kicks off in San Diego. The sole Canadian date is set for May 20 at Toronto's Budweiser Stage.

In a press release , the album is described as revealing "Neil Young + Crazy Horse in all their ragged glory, playing songs from their long relationship."

In 2022, Young stated that he would no longer tour unless he was able to do so in an environmentally sustainable way.

"When I look at the compromise that I would have to make to do that, the things that I don't believe in, that I'd have to endorse, it doesn't turn me on," Young told Q's Tom Power . "I can deal with the power for the venue, I can make it clean. I can make the P.A. clean, the lights clean, the electricity in the building clean. I can clean up all my vehicles. I've got the right fuel. I can do all of that. But the food — all those places are fed by factory farms."

Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Love Earth Tour 2024: How To Buy Tickets and Upcoming Dates

by Branson Knowles February 22, 2024, 6:49 pm

Neil Young and Crazy Horse have just announced the Love Earth Tour for 2024. Their latest run of dates will see Shakey reunited with the shambolic rockers in amphitheaters and pavilions across the country this summer.

Videos by American Songwriter

neil young tour opening act

The Love Earth Tour will begin April 24th at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre in San Diego before wrapping up in Chicago at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island in May. Tickets are guaranteed to move quickly. Young famously keeps audiences guessing as to what act he will be touring next, and to say the Crazy Horse combo is a fan favorite would be an understatement.

If you want to see Neil Young and Crazy Horse live together on their latest tour, tickets are available now through StubHub where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

To call Neil Young a legend would be an understatement. While most other artists celebrate getting a single Grammy nomination, Neil Young has been getting them for the past 30 years. He has more awards and honors than we can mention, including Juno Awards, MTV Music Video Awards, and more.

Crazy Horse has been working with Neil Young for years and their chemistry shows. Not many headliners go on tour with other headliners, and even fewer share the connection these two performers have.

It’s been 10 years since Neil Young and Crazy Horse did a full tour together, so it’s safe to say they’ll have tickets flying off the shelves. Don’t wait to get your official tickets to see Neil Young and Crazy Horse live in action directly through StubHub or by clicking here .

Neil Young & Crazy Horse will make a national road trip for the first time in a decade this spring, making good on plans that were being laid for the band to hit the road before the pandemic interrupted the reunion. The 16-date tour begins with two nights in San Diego April 24-25 and wraps up May 23 in Chicago.

The tour will come on the heels of the release of a new Neil Young & Crazy Horse album, “Fu##in’ Up,” which will get a limited release on vinyl for Record Store Day April 20 before getting an all-format release April 26. The album is said to consist of songs from the band’s past, newly recorded in 2023.

Popular on Variety

To avoid secondary market scalping, tickets will be mobile-only and restricted from transfer, except through the Ticketmaster Face Value Exchange, where no markups will be allowed.

The last full tour by Young with Crazy Horse in tow was in 2014. In 2018, they did a handful of shows in central California (including a Bakersfield concert reviewed by Variety ), followed by a couple of Canadian gigs in early 2019. They were believed to be gearing up for a wider tour in 2020 when the pandemic hit, and even after it abated, Young made it clear through statements on his website that he did not want to subject his audience to possible exposure by putting on a tour. Following a solo tour in summer 2023, he brought the band back together for two shows commemorating the 50th anniversary of L.A.’s Roxy, and the group did a short private show in Toronto for a birthday party this past November.

A tracklist of songs on the new album of “familiar songs” — beyond, obviously, the title cut — has yet to be revealed, but it will include nine tracks, spread across two LPs on the vinyl version. Young said, “In the spirit it’s offered… made this for the Horse lovers. I can’t stop it. The horse is runnin’. What a ride we have. I don’t want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share.” The initial RSD release will be on limited colored vinyl. (Other RSD titles set for April 20 have yet to be revealed, though the list is believed to be coming soon.)

The tour itinerary:

Neil Young is set to kick off his first tour in four years, a July solo outing on the West Coast that appears likely to be a prelude to a more extensive national concert trek. The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee plans to largely showcase songs he he has never performed before, along with some of his classics.

The tour will run from July 1 to July 23. It includes a July 11 San Diego concert at the San Diego Symphony’s Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

By coincidence, that bayside location at Embarcadero Marina Park South is where Young, now 77, performed a captivating solo show in 1992 — 30 years before The Shell opened at the same site in 2021. This will be his first area appearance since a 2015 concert with his band at RIMAC Arena at the University of California San Diego.

Oct. 14, 2015

The specifics of Young’s West Coast concert trek were announced Friday morning by Live Nation, the tour’s promoter. He disclosed the tour — but not the cities or dates — Wednesday via a private Zoom session with paid Patron subscribers to his Neil Young Archives.

The storied singer-songwriter told the subscribers he has prepared about 15 songs for the tour. About 80 percent of them are songs Young will be performing on stage for the first time, including “Prime of Life” from his 1994 album, “Sleeps With Angels,” and “If You Got Love,” an outtake from his 1982 album, “Trans.”

Young indicated the tour will kick off with a four- or five-night residency at a “tiny, little unknown theater that’s close to one of the most well-known theaters in the world.” The venue in question is the John Anson Ford Theater in Los Angeles, which is across the street from the Hollywood Bowl. He will perform four shows there in early July.

Chris Pierce will be the opening acts for all dates on the tour.

Tickets for Young’s July 11 concert at The Shell will go on sale to the general public Wednesday at 10 a.m. at livenation.com , ticketmaster.com and theshell.org , as well as at The Shell’s box office at 222 Marina Park Way. An online-only pre-sale will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at theshell.org .

Tickets for the San Diego concert are priced from $59.50 to $149.50, plus service fees. The tables that the symphony usually has set up in the seating areas closest to the stage will be replaced by additional rows of reserved seats for Young’s performance. The capacity for the concert will be 7,400.

Neil Young Announces First Tour in Four Years

The "Costal Tour" takes place in July

Neil Young Announces First Tour in Four Years

Neil Young has announced his first tour in four years.

For now, the “Costal Tour,” as it’s called, sticks to the west coast. The outing begins with four nights a the 1,200-person capacity Ford Theatre in Los Angeles. He’ll then move on to larger venues, including the Santa Barbara Bowl, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and Berkeley, and the Hayden Homes Amphitheater in Bend, Oregon. According to a press release, more dates will be announced in the future.

The tour will pull from the more obscure reaches of Neil Young’s catalogue, highlighting songs he has yet to perform live over his six-decade career. The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer prefaced the setlist choice to patrons of the Neil Young Archives , saying, “I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again. I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these others songs I haven’t done… I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020…”

Among the songs Young intends to play are “Song X” from Mirror Ball , the 1995 album made with Pearl Jam; the Trans  outtake “If You Got Love”; and “Prime Of Life” from 1994’s Sleeps With Angels . “They’re old songs. But I wake up with them in my head every morning,” Young explained. “They are songs that apply to my life right now, and apply to everyone’s lives in this era that we’re in. Some of them were written 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago, but never really played live.”

Despite his vocal suspicion that “touring is broken” due to Ticketmaster, seats to Neil Young’s 2023 tour will go up for grabs via Ticketmaster beginning Wednesday, July 14th at 10:00 a.m. local time.

Young broke his pandemic-related live hiatus in Feburary with a surprise acoustic set to Canadian protestors, followed by an on-stage reunion with Stephen Stills  in April and duet with Willie Nelson at the latter’s 90th birthday concert. He also released an album with Crazy Horse, All Roads Lead Home , in March.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse 2024 tour setlist: Every song they played at Phoenix concert

neil young tour opening act

Neil Young brought Crazy Horse to Phoenix for the first since 2003, when the Greendale Tour played what we now call Arizona Financial Theatre.

Saturday’s show at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre was in support of "FU##IN’ UP," a new release that captures Young and Crazy Horse in all their ragged glory.

And they treated Phoenix to a show that put the spotlight on the staples that have made Young one of rock ‘n’ roll's most celebrated elder statesmen, setting the tone with an epic performance of “Cortez the Killer” that lasted roughly 15 minutes.

By the time they brought the concert to a cacophonous conclusion with the glorious racket of “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" and a one-song encore of "Danger Bird," Young and Crazy Horse had powered their way through such classics as “Cinnamon Girl,” “Don’t Cry No Tears” and “Powderfinger.”

Young also took a break from the distortion and his bandmates for a three-song unplugged mini-set, including “Comes a Time” and “Heart of Gold,” before the night was through.

Leila with Rev. Billy Stop Shopping Choir’s Neil Young USA Tour

  • Post author By Erich Barganier
  • Post date April 25, 2024

Leila joins Rev. Billy & the Stop Shopping Choir on stadium tour of the USA.  In “Neil-alujah! Rev. Billy and choir to tour with iconic rocker Young,” The Village Sun writes:

Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir are the opening act for Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s Love Earth Tour. With 18 shows across the U.S., the tour kicks off Wed., April 24, in San Diego, then makes its way east, with a stop at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on Tues., May 14, before concluding back in Chicago on May 23.

The radical East Village environmental / social-justice activists already have a long-standing relationship with the iconic rocker, who live-streams their free, secular Sunday performances from their Earthchxrch on his channel. They also opened for the Monsanto Years tour by Young and the band Promise of the Real nine years ago…

Typical for Neil Young tours, the Love Earth Tour shows will be at amphitheaters in the 6,000-to-30,000-seat range. Young and his wife, the actress Daryl Hannah, at whose wedding in 2018 Reverend  Billy preached, have focused on environmental and health issues for many years. The Bridge School [for children with severe physical impairments and communication challenges] and Farm Aid are two of their best-known efforts…. This winter, the artist and activist collective turned their Earthchxrch, at 36 Avenue C, into a warming center and ad hoc English school for newly arrived migrants, mostly from West Africa.

A wonderful event. Contributing to a charity that gives kids that aren't quite up to the average camp experience a chance to have a great time that empowers them.

Father John Misty opened the show with his quirky brand of showmanship in, according to him, a rare instance of playing solo and while the sun is up. He warmed us up with an intimate performance of several of his well known tunes.

Norah Jones was next. She led her trio through their paces , playing some of her newer stuff and hitting the spot with the very intimate crowd with her classics as well. She ended her set with a cover of Neil Youngs "Don't be Denied".

Neil was next. He strolled on unannounced picked up an acoustic guitar and began strumming a very loose and beautiful version of "Sugar Mountain". He followed that with a Buffalo Springfield era "I am a Child", very appropriate for this event. Next was seamless transition to "Comes a Time". He continued with a dozen more songs, Set list here- https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/neil-young/2019/painted-turtle-camp-lake-hughes-ca-1b9c8110.htm - all solo and acoustic either on guitar or piano, with the exception of the last song "Harvest Moon" on which he was joined by Norah and her band.

His stage setup included what was likely a tack piano and his ornate pump organ. The crowd was wanting more of Neil and since those keyboards hadn't been heard from we all were expecting an encore that might include them. It was not to be. After several minutes of clapping and hooting Neil and Nora returned for an encore of "The Losing End".

A very special day was had by all. Thanks to everyone involved.

Neil was Neil. Laid back and phenomenally talented. He played several different guitars, each with a name, harmonica, two pianos (which he brought with him for this tour), a harpsichord, and a ukulele. It's amazing how talented this one man is.

My only exception with this concert was that there was too much obscure music played. He has such a wealth of fantastic songs that span over 4 decades and several groups, so many of which I was hoping to hear. In previous setlists from this tour, he included 3 or 4 Buffalo Springfield tunes, but did not play them on July 11. Very disappointing. So many of his greatest songs were missing.

Other than that, I would go see him again!

Saturday 11th June. The O2. Neil Young and the Promise of the Real. So while the rest of the country were experiencing the usual mixture of short lived joy and then subsequent depression of watching England in a major football tournament, the sensible money was going to the O2 to see the legend that’s Neil Young. Given the spate of musical icon deaths in recent months the decision was made to see the 70 year old Mr Young in case more tragedy descends on the music business.

Young has been energised recently by a fresh new band supporting him on this recent tour. We have seen him on a few occasions and this time there’s no big set, oversized amps or too many gimmicks. He enters dressed a peasant sowing seeds on the stage (more of that later), sits down at the piano and proceeds to produce a sublime acoustic set of twenty five minutes or so running through classic such as ‘After the Gold Rush’, ‘Heart of Gold’, ‘Needle and the Damage Done’ and from ‘Hank to Hendrix’ before he’s joined by the band.

The evening’s set was heavily drawn from two albums, ‘Harvest’ and ‘Ragged Glory’ and we were treated to some rarely played tracks such as ‘Alabama’ and 'If ‘I could have her tonight’ from his first album which he’s only played once before and that was the night before.

The theme of the night if there was one was look after the world, fuck corporate America, be good to each other and protect our valuable natural resources. After the opening acoustic set we then launch into two hours of riff tastic jamming with extended renditions of ‘Love and only Love’ and ‘Words’ clocking in at twenty minutes apiece.

What is impressive about Young is his sheer energy. The new band have revitalised him and it’s them who have to keep up with the seventy year old rocker and not the other way around. His voice is also still as strong as ever and we all join in to set closer Fuckin Up and it’s all over. Like a fine wine Neil Young is getting better and long may he keep rockin us.

Keep on hard rockin baby.
