House from A Christmas Story

"ralphie, you'll shoot your eye out".

Admire the leg lamp in the window. Take a selfie next to the Christmas tree. Grimace in a pink bunny suit. Hide under the kitchen sink. And, of course, hold the Red Ryder BB gun. But resist the temptation to fire it — you might shoot your eye out.

Back in the early 1980s, producers of the classic holiday film "A Christmas Story" — based on a story written by author Jean Shepherd — were seeking filming locations for what was supposed to look like an Indiana steel town in the '40s. They found their answer in a home located in the Cleveland neighborhood of Tremont.

Originally built in 1895, the house underwent a series of facelifts both before and after filming. In 2004, San Diego-based entrepreneur Brian Jones — a longtime fan of the film — bought the home on eBay and renovated it to once again match the scenes from the movie. He used profits from his own business (selling replicas of the movie’s iconic leg lamp) for the down payment.

This means the 1983 holiday classic has become as much a part of our city as pierogies and craft beer. While you can see the Parkers' two-story Victorian on a continuous loop on TBS every Christmas, people from all over can come to Cleveland and visit it year-round. And boy, do they.

What You'll See:

  • Walk through an exact replica of the Parker family home. Admire the leg lamp's "soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window." Take a selfie next to the Christmas tree. Grimace in a pink bunny suit. Hide under the kitchen sink. And, of course, hold the Red Ryder BB gun. But resist the temptation to fire it — you might shoot your eye out.

What Else to Do?

  • Two other homes across the street have been renovated into a gift shop and museum. The museum showcases behind-the-scenes photos and original props and costumes, including the original leg lamp, Ralphie’s bunny suit and the famous Red Ryder BB gun.
  • In December, visitors can run in the A Christmas Story 5k/10k, which routes between Public Square in Downtown Cleveland and the house in Tremont. Hundreds of participants — from serious runners to stroller brigades — come out to enjoy this ridiculous winter fun-run where folks dress up like the movie’s characters (some even run wearing Leg Lamp costumes).

Where to Stay?

  • So, you're already at the house, why not just stay there ? Up to six guests can stay overnight in the Parkers' third floor loft and have the entire house to themselves from an hour after closing until 9 a.m. the next morning. In addition, the house of Ralphie's old man's eternal nemeses, the Bumpuses, is also available for rent and accommodates as many as 10 classic holiday film lovers.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – “A Christmas Story” has become a “A Cleveland Story” in the last decade.

Since the opening of “A Christmas Story” House and Museum on West 11th Street in 2006, interest in the 1983 holiday classic filmed in our city has fueled a rise in local and national tourism. It’s not just the multimillion dollar Rock Hall and art museum and Browns bringing people and the spotlight to town anymore: this homespun, DIY museum has become one of the city’s top draws.

But the house is far from Cleveland’s only nod to the nostalgic tale about the Parker family’s pre-World War II Christmas, based on the memoirs of Jean Shepherd’s youth in Hammond, Indiana. Nowhere is Bob Clark’s holiday film starring Peter Billingsley, Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon more celebrated than in Cleveland, where much of the movie was filmed.

Shepherd’s tale of young Ralphie’s dream of getting his very own official Red Ryder carbine-action, 200-shot Range Model air rifle has also inspired stage productions and donuts and a 5K and dinner parties and candy and even a beer.

christmas story house tour

When the century home on West 11th Street used in the filming opened its doors as a museum on Nov. 25, 2006, no one could have guessed what an impact it would have on the city. The house restored by “Christmas Story”-superfan Brian Jones almost singlehandedly helped establish ACS tourism as a cottage industry in Cleveland. This past year has brought more than 90,000 fans to the house down West 11th Street, with the guest house on the top floor reserved a year in advance.

“It’s definitely unique, there’s nothing else like it – anywhere,” says Jones. “ In a lot of cities, you just see the same stuff. This definitely adds to Cleveland’s coolness. Plus, it’s just down a street in a neighborhood, I don’t think most cities would allow that or it would happen in many places.”

Jones says that Cleveland’s increasing popularity has also helped draw attention to the house.

“Cleveland has gotten more popular in general,” he says. “So the house has gotten more popular as people tell their friend ‘you’ve gotta go to Cleveland and see this!”

It’s not just the house you’ve got to see. Read on for a guide to the full “A Christmas Story” Cleveland experience.

'A Christmas Story' House and Museum

Ground zero for ACS fans, this humble home at the far end of Tremont has become one of Cleveland's top tourist attractions. This time of year, fans are lining up down the street. And for good reason. Purchased by fan Brian Jones in 2006 and restored to its full cinematic glory, it provides the full Parker family experience . Downstairs in the vintage house, visitors are greeted by the Parkers' decorated tree and the sink where Randy hid. And, of course the glorious leg lamp in the front window. Upstairs, guests can tour the bedrooms and bathroom – and check out Ralphie's decoder ring AND a bar of Lifebuoy soap. All that's missing is Ralphie and his gun. Wait, is that it behind the tree? Across the street, the fascinating museum features rare memorabilia including film costumes and props, articles about the making of the film and even Miss Shields' chalkboard. And the gift shop has anything an ACS fan could ever want, from Pink Nightmare PJs to Red Ryders to posters, Lifebuoy soap, slippers, clothing and much more. 3159 West 11th St., Cleveland; 216-298-4919. Open year round, with extended holiday hours. Call 216- 298-4919 or see https://www.achristmasstoryhouse.com/hours-and-admission/ for December schedule. Closed Christmas Day. Admission, $10 - $13.

Registration is closed for the 7th annual   A Christmas Story 5K/10K Run at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 . This year the race will feature a 22-foot inflatable leg lamp. The route begins at Public Square, goes to the Christmas Story House (for the 5K) and then back to Public Square for the 10K. It is one of the main fundraisers the ACS House does for their neighborhood grant program, which has led to the renovation of several houses on the street in just the last year. "We want to give back to the neighborhood," says Jones.

Bumpus House

When house next door to the Christmas Story House & Museum on West 11th Street in Tremont came up for sale last year, ACS House owner Brian Jones had an idea: he'd buy the house and convert it into a 1940s-themed Bumpus House guest house. What better place to spend a night before Christmas? The "Stolen Turkey" suite, which encompasses the second and third floors, will sleep up to six guests. Both include kitchenette and full baths. Guests can also rent the entire house. Rates for the rest of the year start at $295 per night. Admission to A Christmas Story House & Museum is included with each rental. . ‘A Christmas Story’ on stage

The Cleveland Play House's adaptation of 'A Christmas Story' -the most popular show in Play House history -- is a nostalgic trip down memory lane that takes equal parts from the movie and Jean Shepard's writings. Old Man Christopher Gerson returns this year, with Anjanette Hall stepping into the role of Mother. Ezra Bernstein is making his Play House debut as Ralphie. The Play House's production stays true to the nostalgic essence of the film by boiling it down to several key moments and two key threads: Ralphie's dreams of his Red Ryder air rifle and the narrator's melancholic dreams of his lost childhood. Allen Theatre in Playhouse Square, through Dec. 23. $20 - $80 at clevelandplayhouse.com or 216-241-6000. Want an even more festive night? Window Shopping

Thanks to “A Christmas Story,” the ghosts of Cleveland’s past live on forever – even at Public Square. The site of the Christmas parade scene looks far different today and Higbee’s is now a casino, but the store that played such an important role on- and off-screen in the history of "A Christmas Story" comes alive again for the holidays. In the spirit of Higbees, JACK Cleveland Casino will yet again be decorating the display windows that line Prospect, Ontario and Public Square. This year’s windows will be decorated in an Enchanted Winterland theme by 15 local Cleveland businesses and organizations including Destination Cleveland, Cleveland Metro Parks, the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Cavaliers, A Christmas Story House, Western Reserve Historical Society and others. The windows will remain up until the New Year.

Laura DeMarco, The Plain Dealer: An "Old Man" cocktail, the Higee's Manhattan

Located across West 11th Street from A Christmas Story House, this 1906-built neighborhood tavern, at 1104 Rowley Ave., was a favorite with cast members. Not only did the upstairs serve as a dressing area. Stories abound about how "The Old Man" (Darren McGavin) used to shut down the Rowley at night, then go back to his trailer for a nightcap, finally ending up sharing breakfast while he would listen to the actor recite his lines. Today, a wall of movie stills and several drinks on the menu pay tribute to the film, including the bourbon-based Red Ryder, the Pink Nightmare with Cuervo Silver and the sweet and festive Be Sure to Drink Your Ovaltine, with whipped cream vodka, Kahlua, cream, and yes, Ovaltine. Sadly, they no longer serve their Old Man’s or Bumpus Hounds turkey dinner or pizza, but they do give 10 percent off the bill for those with ACS House tickets.

A christmas story house tour: step into a holiday classic.

a christmas story house

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Cleveland, Ohio , then the A Christmas Story House tour is a must! This iconic house was the backdrop for the classic film “A Christmas Story,” a movie that was a holiday staple when I was a kid. Not only can you explore the house, but you can even interact with everything inside! It’s a total blast for the whole family.

a christmas story house special award

A Little Bit of History: The Story Behind the House

The A Christmas Story House is located in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. Built in 1895, the house didnned its movie star status in 1983 when it featured as Ralphie Parker’s home in “A Christmas Story.” The house got a major makeover in 2004 to look just like it did in the film, thanks to superfan Brian Jones. Now it’s a must-see attraction, especially during the holidays.

a christmas story streetview

A Hands-on Interactive Tour

One of the coolest things about the tour is that it’s super interactive. The guide makes it clear that everything in the house is interactive and encourages you to have fun recreating scenes from the movie. Just remember, no video shooting is allowed. But don’t worry, you can still snap lots of photos!

The Kitchen Experience

The kitchen is where you’ll feel like you’ve truly stepped back in time. It’s set up to look just like the movie, complete with vintage appliances and even the famous turkey that the Bumpus hounds steal! Our youngest son especially loved crawling under the sink to recreate the scene where Randy hides, worried that “the old man is going to kill Ralphie.” Between the iconic props and the interactive elements, the kitchen really brings the magic of “A Christmas Story” to life.

Relive the “Lifebuoy Soap” Moment: The Bathroom Experience

Ah, the bathroom—home of the infamous “Lifebuoy soap” scene where Ralphie drops the F-bomb. You’ll find the exact replica of that red bar of soap, making it the perfect backdrop for hilarious family photos. I mean, who wouldn’t want to recreate that moment, right? Don’t worry, no one’s actually going to wash your mouth out with soap, but it’s a fun way to feel like you’re a part of the movie!

a christmas story house lifeboy soap

More Than Just a House: Other Attractions

What’s even better? The management owns other properties in the area like the Bumpus House next door, and properties across the street that house the gift shop, cars, and a small museum, which is also a blast to visit. You can even stay overnight at the Bumpus House if you’re a superfan. How cool is that?

Zoom, Zoom: Don’t Forget the Cars!

Love vintage cars? There are also two awesome vehicles to check out: the Old Man’s 1938 Oldsmobile and the fire truck that saved Flick’s tongue from the frozen pole. Neither of them is the original from the movie, but both cars add an extra layer of fun to your visit!

christmas story house tour

We learned that the schoolyard scenes in the movie were actually filmed up in Canada. Even the firetruck that saves Flick’s tongue from the flagpole belongs to the Chippawa Volunteer Fire Fighters’ Association in Niagara Falls, Canada. Funny enough, we were just in Niagara Falls the day before! If we’d known, we totally would’ve stopped by to see it. But hey, the firetruck at the museum is an awesome replica and has some cool hidden details that pay tribute to the movie.

Stock Up on Memories: The Gift Shop

Before you leave, make sure you visit the gift shop. It’s packed with unique souvenirs like the infamous leg lamp and other memorabilia. You’ll find something for everyone in the family, and maybe even some holiday gifts.

Time Spent: Quick and Sweet

The museum only takes 10 to 20 minutes to explore, which is perfect because, let’s be real, kids can get bored fast. Our youngest, who was eleven at the time, started to get bored just before we were ready to go. So, it’s a quick but super fun outing for the whole family.

Ralphie's house—the same one the family stands in front of to admire the infamous and ultimately fragile leg lamp—is located in Cleveland, where A Christmas Story was filmed (though the story takes place in Indiana). The building's been turned into a museum that guests can visit year-round with the exception of major holidays.

While the lower floor houses the museum, the third floor is actually a loft where visitors can book a stay. It's equipped with a full kitchen, living room, and bathroom and can accommodate up to six people. You can even sleep in Ralphie and Randy's bedroom! As a bonus, guests who stay in the house have access to the downstairs museum after-hours. Admission to the museum is, of course, included with your stay.

Oh, and the Parkers' house isn't the only place you can stay if you make the trip to Cleveland. The house next door is also available to rent for overnight stays, aka where the Bumpuses live in the movie. Don't worry: None of their 785 dogs will be on the premises. You can, however, stay in the downstairs suite affectionately called the "Hound Dog Haven." Or, if you prefer, go with the "Stolen Turkey Suite" on the second and third floors. Guests can also rent the entire house.

You can book your stay (rooms start at $195 per night for the Bumpus house and $545 for the Parker house) and learn more about the museum at the A Christmas Story House & Museum website .
