5 Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

Magnus Sellén

  • Updated: March 15, 2023

Cruise Control Not Working

It would be difficult to find a vehicle on the road today without cruise control. This invaluable feature makes driving long distances easier but can also cause trouble when it malfunctions. Understanding the reasons your cruise control stopped working ensures that you can get the problem fixed quickly for a more enjoyable ride.

While this fault can cause issues with the cruise control system itself, there could also be an effect on the acceleration of your vehicle. That’s why you want to have it looked at as soon as you notice a problem. Let’s take a quick look at the reasons your cruise control may have stopped working.

Reasons Why Your Cruise Control Stopped Working

The most common reason a cruise control stops working is due to a blown fuse or a defective brake pedal switch . It can also be caused by issues with the throttle control system or the ABS. In older cruise control systems, it can be caused by a broken vacuum line.

Here is a more detailed list of the possible reasons your cruise control is not working:

1. Blown Fuse

broken fuse

All electrical systems in the vehicle are controlled by fuses. Your cruise control system is attached to a fuse that can blow if there is a short circuit or fault. Without a good fuse, the cruise control system can’t work at all.

Thankfully, it’s not difficult to find and replace a blown fuse. Look in the owner’s manual to find the fuse that corresponds with the cruise control technology.

2. Defective Brake Pedal Switch

push brake pedal

The brake pedal switch is responsible for turning the brake lights on and off based on the pedal position. Cruise control systems are designed to disengage whenever your brake pedal gets pressed.

Because the cruise control is wired into the brake pedal switch, any fault can cause it to stop working. When the brake pedal switch malfunctions, the car believes the brakes are engaged, causing the system to turn off automatically. Not only that, but your car’s brake light might also be stuck on, leaving confused drivers in your wake.

3. Malfunctioning Speed Sensor

abs sensor close

Speed sensors are located on every wheel or differential. The purpose of these sensors is to monitor the speed of the wheels to determine if traction control is needed.

The speed sensors are also part of the cruise control system. When a sensor fails, the cruise control can stop working and the speedometer might act strange as well.

If there is an issue with a speed sensor, it will often show with an ABS warning light or a check engine light on the dashboard.

RELATED: 3 Symptoms of a Bad ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

4. Electrical Issues

cruise control buttons

The cruise control system is electronic, with many components working together to make the system operate. If the cruise control fails to work, you want to check the wiring harness and associated connectors for a fault.

You also need to ensure that the voltage source is supplying enough power to the system. Even the smallest fault can cause defects with the cruise control. In many cases, there can be an issue with the cruise control lever or buttons causing the cruise control to not engage.

If your cruise control buttons are located on the steering wheel it could also be caused by a bad clock spring, which is located behind the steering wheel.

Check the system with an OBD2 scanner to look for any trouble codes related to the cruise control.

RELATED: 5 Symptoms of a Broken Clock Spring, Location & Replacement Cost

5. Damaged Vacuum Actuator, Hoses or Cable (Older cruise control)

If you drive an older vehicle with cruise control, you might have an issue with the vacuum actuator or the cable that connects to the throttle. If there has been damage done to the vacuum hoses or the actuator, the cruise control will stop working altogether.

Additionally, the cable linking the actuator to the throttle must be in good shape. If it has been broken, the cruise control will fail.

What is Cruise Control?

Cruise control is a feature that is used when you are traveling at a consistent speed. Cruise control was first introduced for automobiles in the 1950s. However, it took many years before it became a staple in the modern vehicle.

This electrical system allows you to set a predetermined speed and take your foot off of the gas pedal. If you are on a long drive, there is less fatigue because you don’t have to try to maintain your speed. Cruise control can also benefit fuel economy because the vehicle uses less fuel when traveling steadily.

In newer cars, you might be able to find adaptive cruise control , which is a smart technology. Adaptive cruise control allows you to travel at a predetermined speed, but it also helps to maintain a safe distance from the vehicles in front of you with the help of sensors. With conventional cruise control, you need to take over when the car in front of you slows down, but that’s not the case with adaptive cruise control.

There are also vehicles nowadays with not only cruise control, but fully self-driving vehicles . We will most likely see much more of this in the future.

Cruise Control Repair Cost

The cost to repair your cruise control system depends on what caused it to fail. If you need to replace a cruise control or brake switch, you might spend between $125 and $350, including parts and labor. However, the cost to change a fuse is only a few dollars and you can perform the replacement yourself in just a matter of seconds.

On the other hand, when something major fails, such as the actuator, you could be looking at a much higher repair bill. In some vehicles, the cost to replace a cruise control actuator can cost more than $700. These costs rise if you drive a luxury vehicle or one that is difficult to get parts for.

It might not seem immediately important for you to fix the broken cruise control, but this defective system can affect other performance aspects. You could start to notice issues with acceleration or have trouble with the speedometer. To play it safe, it’s always best to have the cruise control repaired as soon as you notice a problem.

Is there a fuse for the cruise control?

Yes. If the cruise control is installed from the factory, you should check your car’s owner’s manual for the fuse location. If it’s an aftermarket cruise control, you’ll need to follow the wires to find the fuse.

Does the brake switch affect the cruise control system?

Yes. The brake switch affects the cruise control system. The brake switch sends a signal to the cruise control system to let it know when the brakes are being applied for the engine to know when it should stop accelerating.

Will the cruise control work if the check engine light is on?

The cruise control function will be disabled when the check engine light is on in most car models, even if the cause of the check engine light is not the cruise control itself. This is mainly due to safety reasons.

Can a vacuum leak affect cruise control?

Older vehicles use vacuum to control the throttle for the cruise control, and in this case a vacuum leak can heavily affect the cruise control. However, modern cruise controls are fully electric and in most cases will not be affected by a vacuum leak if the check engine light is not illuminated.

Although many people may think that the cruise control system is unimportant and not worth spending money to repair, the problem can be caused by a faulty part that will affect the engine’s performance or durability. Therefore, it is best not to ignore the problem if your cruise control is not working without first diagnosing the car properly.

If your cruise control still isn’t working after trying all the tips in this article, it’s probably time to take it in for a professional opinion from a mechanic. It may be a more serious problem that requires replacement parts or repairs. In the meantime, drive safe and enjoy the open road!

Adding Aftermarket Cruise Control Is Easier Than You Think

cruise control lite

If you’re an auto enthusiast, you probably take pleasure in the response from stomping the gas pedal. But c’mon folks, we can also admit that a long highway trip is more pleasant with cruise control. Set a constant speed, lift your foot, and let the car glide down the pike.

But what if your vehicle didn’t come with cruise control? No worries. There are plenty of aftermarket kits to add cruise control to your ride. If you have some basic skills, this DIY upgrade can happen in an hour or two.

Shop now for cruise control kits

eBay Motors offers hundreds of aftermarket cruise control kits and related parts. But before you make a purchase, answer these questions:

  • Is the aftermarket cruise control kit compatible with your car?
  • Are your brake lights working properly?
  • Are you comfortable working on your car’s electrical wiring and throttle settings?

An installation kit should be designed specifically for your vehicle and include all the necessary gear.

An eBay search could turn up a usable original New Old Stock (NOS) kit from the carmaker.

If you answered yes (or you’re willing to learn), then cruise control might be coming soon to your vehicle. And if you think this is beyond your skill set, most auto shops can install a kit for you.

Watch the installation of a Rostra cruise control system in a Hyundai Accent:

Tips for Installing Aftermarket Cruise Control

Here’s a quick overview of the primary components. Kits will provide detailed instructions. First things first: safety! Before starting to work on your car’s electrical system, disconnect the battery.

Wiring harness: Most kits come with a wiring harness, complete with colored wires. Instructions will guide you to wire the hot and cold sides of your brake switch. Other wires connect to the ignition “run” contact and ground. A significant step is to splice into a Vehicle Speed Signal (VSS) wire. Most cars of the past 20 years have a VSS. If not, there are adapter kits to create a signal generator or use a pick-up coil to create a similar signal.

Kits often integrate with a drive-by-wire system.

Kits often integrate with a drive-by-wire system.

Throttle cable: Attach the cable provided in the kit to the existing throttle plate of your car’s engine. Most kits also have sufficient adapters and linkages to fit a variety of throttles. Verify that the cable is not binding on anything under the hood. Aftermarket cruise control kits can also accommodate newer engines that drive by wire—and don’t have an old-school cable to control engine RPMs.

Actuator: The actuator is a mechanical box that controls your car’s cruising function. It is mounted in the engine compartment and has connectors for the wiring harness and throttle cable. It also has several DIP (dual inline package) switches. Moving specific DIP switches up or down allows the cruise control unit to communicate with essential vehicle functions. The settings include the number of engine cylinders, the type of speed sensor, and its output. To save the new settings, power off the actuator and then restore power.

A dash-mounted controller activates cruise control.

A cruise control switch integrates with the turn signal lever.

Driver switch: Many cruise control systems offer a switch on your turn signal stalk that looks like a factory installation. Others provide buttons on a dash-mounted plate. We recommend the turn signal switch, which has a cleaner look and helps keep your eyes on the road.

Testing Required

Kits are designed for specifically vehicles and provide all the necessary gear.

Kits are designed for specifically vehicles and provide all the necessary gear.

After completing all the steps stipulated in the kit instructions:

  • Re-connect the battery.
  • Check to verify that your brake lights still function correctly.
  • Start the engine, leave it in Park, and mildly depress the gas pedal.
  • Make sure that it returns to a slow idle setting.

A dash-mounted controller activates cruise control.

A dash-mounted controller activates cruise control.

If the brake lights and idle are working as expected, it’s time to take the car to a deserted parking lot. Next, accelerate to a moderate speed, set the cruise control, and see if the speed is maintained with your foot off the gas pedal. Finally, touch the brake pedal and verify that the cruise control disengages.

If everything is working, your car should be ready for further testing on the highway. It’s a good idea to take several short, local highway trips to verify a successful installation before heading off on a long interstate journey.

While aftermarket cruise control is available to hands-on DIYers, that’s not yet mainstream for so-called adaptive cruise control. But automated road sensing and even lane-keeping is probably not far off. For example, an aftermarket self-driving kit from Comma.ai is usually available on eBay .

How to Replace a Cruise Control Brake Release Switch

$159.17 - $270.75.

Proper application of cruise control has become more than just a simple luxury. For many vehicle owners, cruise control allows them to save as much as 20% on fuel economy when driving on long-distance road trips. Others rely on cruise control to help relieve pressure on knees, leg muscles, and sore joints. However you use the cruise control on your vehicle, it is a hassle to fix it on your own.

One of the leading components that fails sooner than others is the cruise control brake release switch . The job of the cruise control brake release switch is to allow drivers to deactivate the cruise control by simply tapping the brake pedal. This switch is used on automatic transmission vehicles, while on most vehicles with a manual transmission there is a clutch release switch that cancels the cruise control once the clutch pedal is depressed.

Additionally, there is always a hand-operated button that deactivates the cruise control on the steering wheel or turn signal arm. Having multiple deactivating devices is mandatory for vehicles sold in the United States as it's an important safety feature.

There are several individual components that comprise the cruise control system that may cause the vehicle's cruise control to fail, but we'll assume that the proper diagnosis has determined that the brake switch is faulty and needs to be replaced. There are two common reasons why the brake switch may be faulty, both of which cause the cruise control to malfunction.

The first case is when the cruise control brake switch does not open, which means that when you press on the brake pedal it does not shut off the cruise control. The second case is when the cruise control brake switch does not close the circuit, which does not permit the cruise control to set. In either case, this requires a replacement of the brake pedal cruise control switch.

Note : The specific location and steps for removing this component may vary based on the vehicle you own. The steps below are general instructions. Make sure to verify specific steps and guidelines with your vehicle manufacturer service manual before proceeding.

Warning : Working on electrical equipment such as the cruise control brake switch can result in physical harm if you don't disconnect the power supply before attempting to remove any electrical components. If you don't feel 100 percent confident about replacing the cruise control brake switch or don't have the recommended tools or help, please contact an ASE certified mechanic to complete this job for you.

Part 1 of 3: Determining the symptoms of a bad cruise control brake switch

Before you make the decision to order replacement parts and remove the cruise control brake switch, it's always a good idea to properly diagnose the issue. On most OBD-II scanners, an error code P-0573 and P-0571 are typically the codes that indicate a problem with the cruise control brake switch. However, if you don't receive this error code, or don't have a scanner to download error codes, you'll have to do some self-diagnosis checks.

When the cruise control brake pedal switch is faulty, the cruise control will not activate. Since the brake pedal and cruise control share the same activation switch, one way to determine if the switch is faulty is to press the brake pedal and see if the brake lights illuminate. If they do not, the cruise control brake switch may need to be replaced.

Some of the other symptoms of a bad of faulty cruise control brake switch include:

Cruise control does not set: When the cruise control brake switch is damaged, it usually does not allow the electrical circuit to complete. This keeps the circuit "open," which essentially tells the cruise control that the brake pedal is depressed.

Cruise control will not shut off: On the opposite side of the equation, if the cruise control won't shut off when you press the brake pedal, it's commonly caused by a faulty cruise control brake switch that is closed, meaning it will not send the signal to deactivate through the relay and to the vehicle's ECM .

Cruise control shuts off automatically while driving: If you're driving down the road with the cruise control activated and the cruise control shuts off without pressing the pedal, there may be a malfunction inside the brake switch requiring replacement.

Part 2 of 3: Replacing the cruise control brake switch

After diagnosing that the cruise control brake switch is faulty, you'll need to prepare your vehicle and yourself to replace the sensor. This job is relatively easy to complete, as most brake switches are located under the vehicle's dashboard, slightly over the brake pedal.

However, since the location of this device is unique to the vehicle you're working on, purchasing a service for the specific make, model, and year of your vehicle is highly recommended. The service manual will typically give you the exact location along with several replacement tips from the manufacturer.

Materials Needed

  • Boxed end wrench or ratchet wrench
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Thread locker
  • Replacement cruise control brake switch
  • Replacement cruise control brake switch clip
  • Safety equipment

battery being disconnected using wrench

Step 1: Disconnect the vehicle's battery . The first thing that should be done before replacing any electrical component is to disconnect the power supply.

Locate the vehicle's battery and disconnect the positive and negative battery cables before proceeding.

brake switch under the dash and slightly above the break pedal

Step 2: Locate the cruise control brake switch . After removing the power supply, find the cruise control brake switch.

Refer to your vehicle's service manual or contact a certified ASE mechanic to ask them where the brake switch is located for your specific vehicle if you have difficulty finding the unit.

Step 3: Remove floor mats from drivers side . You'll have to lay flat under the dashboard in order to remove and replace the cruise control brake switch.

It's a good idea to remove any floor mats as they not only cause discomfort but also may slip while you're working and potentially cause injury.

access panels covering the wiring

Step 4: Remove any access panels under the dashboard . On many vehicles the dashboard has a cover or panel keeping all wires and sensors contained and free from the brake and throttle pedals.

If your vehicle has this type of panel, remove it to gain access to the wiring harnesses underneath the vehicle.

Step 5: Disconnect the wiring harness attached to the cruise control brake switch . Remove the wiring harness that is attached to the sensor.

To complete this, you'll need to use a flathead screwdriver to carefully depress a white clip that connects the wiring harness to the sensor. Once you press down on the clip, pull on the harness slowly to remove it from the brake switch.

cruise control brake switch located near the top of the brake pedal

Step 6: Remove the old brake switch . Remove the old brake switch typically secured to a bracket with a 10mm bolt (specific size of the bolt will vary for each vehicle).

Using a boxed end wrench or ratchet wrench, remove the bolt carefully, keeping one hand on the brake switch. Once the bolt has been removed, the brake switch will become loose and should be removed easily.

However, there may be a secure clip attached to the back of the brake switch. If there is, use your flat blade screwdriver to carefully pry the clip off the fitting on the bracket. The brake switch should "pop" off easily.

Step 7: Compress the new brake switch clip to the new brake switch . Purchase a new brake switch clip (if your vehicle’s unit has one) instead of trying to reset and reattach the old clip to a new sensor.

In many cases, the clip is installed on the new brake sensor already. If not, make sure to secure the clip to the back of the sensor before attempting to reinstall the new unit.

Step 8: Reattach the cruise control brake switch . Make sure to reinstall the brake switch in the same direction as the previous brake switch.

This ensures the wiring harness is easily attached and the switch works correctly. If the brake switch has a clip, press the clip into it's fitting on the bracket first. It should "snap" into position.

Step 9: Reattach the bolt . Once the brake switch is properly aligned, reinstall the 10mm bolt that secures the brake switch to the bracket.

It's a good idea to use thread locker on that bolt as you don't want that brake switch coming loose. Tighten the bolt to the recommended torque pressure as noted in your vehicle's service manual.

Step 10: Inspect the wiring harness . Although many mechanics assume the job is done once the harness is reattached, in some cases, the wiring harness itself is the cause of the cruise control problems.

Before reattaching the harness, inspect it for loose fitting wires, frayed wires or wires that are disconnected.

Step 11: Reattach the wiring harness . Make sure you reattach the wiring harness in the same direction it was removed.

It should "click" into place once it's properly secured to the new cruise control brake switch. Step 12: Reattach control access panel under the dashboard . Install as it was when you started.

Part 3 of 3: Test drive the vehicle

After you've successfully replaced the cruise control brake switch, the issues should be fixed. However, you'll want to test drive the vehicle to ensure the original problem is resolved. The best way to complete this test drive is to plan your route first. Since you'll be testing the cruise control, make sure you find a highway with very little traffic in order to test the device.

If you were having problems with the cruise control shutting off after a certain period of time, you'll want to test the vehicle for at least that same time period.

Step 1: Start the vehicle . Let it warm up to operating temperature

Step 2: Plug in scanner . Make sure to plug in a diagnostic scanner (if you have one) and reset any error codes.

Once that has been done, complete a new scan and determine if new error codes show up before test driving.

Step 3: Drive at highway speeds . Drive your vehicle to the test highway and accelerate to highway speeds.

Step 4: Set your cruise control at 55 or 65 MPH . After the cruise control is set, slightly tap your brake pedal to verify the cruise control shuts off

Step 5: Reset the cruise control again and drive for 10 to 15 miles . Verify that the cruise control does not shut off automatically.

Replacing the cruise control brake switch is very simple once you have the right tools and know the precise location of the device. If you've read these instructions and still don't feel 100% confident in completing this repair, please contact one of YourMechanic’s local ASE certified mechanics to complete the cruise control brake switch replacement job for you.

How does cruise control work?

cruise control lite

Cruise control on the Lectric XP is similar to cruise control on a car. To activate, hold the down arrow while twisting the throttle. The bike will try to maintain a speed based on the position of the throttle when cruise control is activated.

For example, if the throttle is twisted all the way from its resting position (to a position that would normally maintain 20mph) and the down arrow is held, cruise control will be activated and set to 20mph.

Even if the bike is going slower than 20mph, it will try to accelerate and maintain that speed because it was set based on that throttle position. To cruise at low speeds, slightly twist the throttle and hold the down arrow.

Cruise control can be deactivated at any time by pulling the brakes. This will also cut power to the motor as it would during normal operation.

Chevrolet Silverado: Why is Cruise Control Not Working?

Cruise control is a sophisticated electronic system that is able to hold/accelerate and decelerate the vehicle by the push of a button. The system uses sensors and modules to communicate vehicle speed and driver inputs at a very fast rate. A failure in one of these systems can lead to total loss of cruise control operation.

This article applies to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (1999-present).

The cruise control system consists of modules, switches and the vehicle speed sensor. To set the cruise at the desired speed, a driver pushes an input on the cruise control switch. This action signals the cruise control module (or powertrain control module) to monitor the speed sensor and actuate the throttle as necessary. To turn cruise control off, the driver can either select "off" on the switch or close the stoplamp switch on the brake pedal assembly.

Like any electronic system on a vehicle, the cruise control system is susceptible to component and wiring failures. Software updates may also be needed to change voltage levels and values that determine settings such as acceleration rate and power consumed.

Materials Needed

  • Screwdriver set
  • Digital multi-meter
  • Scan tool with data monitoring

Step 1 – Check the fuses

Open the fuse boxes and read the cover for fuse locations associated with cruise control. Fuses break due to age, but a blown fuse may also indicate a short in the wiring.

Step 2 – Check the stoplamp switch

This switch is located on the brake pedal assembly and allows current to flow to the cruise control module to signal cruise deactivation.

To test the switch, use a digital multi-meter set to ohms and read the resistance between terminals "A" and "B." Resistance should be less than or at 0.3 ohms.

Step 3 – Check the cruise control on/off switch

This switch can be found on the steering wheel, although some switches can be found on the dashboard. If only one setting on your cruise control does not work, chances are high that the switch is the problem.

Test the switch the same way the brake switch is tested. You will have to remove some dashboard trim pieces to reach the switch and its connectors. Each terminal on the switch should have a low resistance (less than 0.3 ohms) reading between its paired terminal.

Step 4 – Check the operation of the vehicle speed sensor

This sensor reads the magnetic field interrupted by the spinning output shaft. It relays a varying voltage to the powertrain control module that is displayed on the instrument cluster as vehicle speed and RPM.

The sensor is located on the transmission on rear wheel drive trucks and on the transfer case on four wheel drive trucks.

When there is a problem with the sensor or the associated wiring, the gauge needles may become erratic or not move at all. This is usually accompanied by a MIL (malfunction indicator lamp).

A digital multi-meter or scan tool can be used to monitor the sensor's voltage level as the output shaft turns. The voltage level should oscillate from about 0.5-4.5 volts. A multi-meter must be set on the mix/max setting with both leads attached to the sensor terminals to record these fast changes.

cruise control lite

Step 5 – Update the computer module software

On November 13, 2009, a technical service bulletin (number 09-08-68-001) was issued that requested a software calibration. This was done to eliminate the problem of the cruise control shutting off due to high current demands from other devices.

To perform a software update, you will need to take your truck to a dealer or independent shop with a compatible scan tool.

Adaptive Cruise Control: How Does It Work?

' src=

When carmakers pitched cruise control to the American public more than half a century ago, they framed it as a way to maintain a safe, consistent speed on the highway and a path to conserving fuel. Although the fuel savings were minimal, both claims were accurate.

Simple to use, all you need to do is turn on the system in your vehicle , reach your desired cruising speed, and set it. The system then assumes control of the accelerator, maintaining the set speed until the driver engages the brake. Easy peasy.

Automotive engineers tweaked around the edges of cruise control for the next 35 years. However, cruise control didn’t evolve much beyond the first system that found its way into the 1958 Chrysler Imperial.

By the early 1990s, Japanese carmakers were adding a form of forward collision warning to their cruise control, but it was still up to the driver to react and apply the brakes. Not until Mercedes-Benz developed its Distronic cruise control did cruise control with self-braking make its first public appearance. Mercedes first featured it on its 1999 S-Class.

In essence, not only did the 1999 S-Class introduce the driver-aid technology adaptive cruise control (ACC), but it also set the cornerstone of the foundation for self-driving vehicles.

Cruise control is still the more prolific of speed controls offered on today’s new cars, but adaptive cruise control has started gaining ground. More car models provide it as standard or as an available option. But, what exactly is adaptive cruise control, and how does it work? Let’s see.

What Is Adaptive Cruise Control?

Adaptive cruise control systems vary in sophistication from carmaker to carmaker and sometimes even model to model. They also vary in name. For example, Genesis calls it Smart Cruise Control, while BMW identifies it as Distance Control. However, in a nutshell, the feature holds a safe preset speed while maintaining a safe following distance from the traffic before it. ACC essentially makes commuting and road trips so much easier.

Depending on the system, here’s what else the feature can do:

  • Set the distance . Most systems allow you to set the following distance within parameters like one, two, or three cars.
  • Stop the vehicle in traffic . Some ACC systems will bring the car to a complete stop if the traffic before it stops. However, they won’t self-accelerate when traffic begins moving again.
  • Stop and start in traffic . Some systems will bring the vehicle to a complete stop and then automatically accelerate as the flow of traffic resumes.
  • Work at low speeds in city traffic . Other systems use an add-on called traffic-jam assist designed to fully function in low-speed stop-and-go traffic found on city streets or logjammed highways.
  • Slow down at curves . Moreover, there are ACC systems capable of working with your vehicle’s GPS mapping to anticipate approaching curves, slowing the car going into the curve if it determines the preset speed is too high.
  • Adjust to speed-limit variations . Some systems working in conjunction with traffic-sign recognition or GPS will adjust the speed according to speed-limit variations.
  • Appear in head-up display . The ACC will show up in your view for vehicles equipped with head-up display.

How Does Adaptive Cruise Control Work?

Think of ACC as cruise control with a Ph.D. It can use radar, laser, binocular computer vision systems, a forward-aimed camera, or some combination of these technologies to track the traffic ahead of your vehicle. It senses when that traffic flow slows or stops, reacting to maintain the preset following distance.

As stated earlier, some systems will bring your vehicle to a complete stop to match traffic flow. Even more intelligent systems can then accelerate as the traffic flow resumes. These are called assisting, predictive, and multi-sensor systems.

Benefits and Limitations of Adaptive Cruise Control

Warming up to ACC required a long time for us. Early systems didn’t allow for presetting the maintained following distance. Consequently, a vehicle six or seven car lengths ahead of you moving into your lane became almost an airbag-deploying event. However, as ACC systems evolved and improved, we became more accustomed to them. We now look at regular cruise control as barbaric.

Reducing driver stress : No question, the number one benefit of ACC is allowing the driver to relax a bit. The system assumes the responsibility of slowing and accelerating to adjust to traffic flow. It doesn’t mean the driver gives up control, but the system assumes the workload of keeping pace with the traffic flow.

Stop and go : With more intelligent systems, ACC assumes complete control of braking and accelerating. In other words, it can bring the vehicle to a full stop and then accelerate as the flow of traffic resumes. Some systems will disengage after stopping and leaves it to the driver to push the “Resume” button or tap the accelerator to get moving again. However, more sophisticated systems will accelerate themselves from a complete stop.

Easy to use : For drivers not able (or willing) to read a car manual before setting out on the highway, you can fiddle with the ACC system and pick it up with little practice.

Not autonomous : Regardless of an ACC system’s sophistication, the driver must stay engaged. ACC can’t read the minds of vehicles around it. It only reacts to what other cars do. Anticipating the actions of other drivers remains your responsibility.

No stop and go : ACC systems that don’t offer a full stop will slow the vehicle but require the driver to bring it to a full stop when the flow of traffic stops. Even if an ACC system does bring the vehicle to a full stop, it may still require the driver to re-engage the system to get back under way.

No lane change : An ACC system itself can’t change lanes automatically to maintain the preset speed. Therefore, if you’re not paying attention as the driver, you may find your vehicle is going several miles an hour below the set speed. This is because your vehicle has gradually pulled up behind a slow-moving car, and you have steadily slowed to its pace. This is another reason you should stay engaged.

What Is the Difference Between Adaptive Cruise Control and Self-Driving?

There continues to be plenty of confusion about self-driving or autonomous systems, what they are, and how they operate. We’ll get to that next. However, the major difference between adaptive cruise control and a self-driving system is, ACC is simply a component of a driverless system. That is to say, ACC provides automatic braking and acceleration in a self-driving system that also includes steering, and sometimes automatic lane changing.

What Is the Difference Between Level 2 and Level 3 Autonomous Driving?

SAE Levels of Automation

We won’t take you through all levels of driving automation . They begin with no automation and wrap up with full automation, including vehicles without pedals or steering wheels. See the chart above from SAE International.

What we will contrast is Level 2 and Level 3. Spoiler alert: The difference is significant.

Level 2 – To qualify as Level 2, a vehicle must have at least two driver-assistance technologies. This typically includes ACC and another technology like lane-centering assist or lane-keeping assist . With these technologies, the vehicle can steer, accelerate, and brake on its own in certain conditions. Level 2 still requires the driver’s hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. It is the current state of automation.

Level 3 – If Level 2 is partial self-driving, Level 3 is conditional full automation. A Level 3 self-driving system uses a wide spectrum of driver-assistance features and artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies collude to react to and make decisions about the vehicles’ ever-changing situations. In a Level 3 vehicle, the driver can completely surrender control of the vehicle’s operation on specific roads. The driver must be prepared to resume control in case of an emergency but otherwise doesn’t have command of the car. That is, the driver’s hands can be off the steering wheel and their attention elsewhere.

Although the state of autonomous driving today is Level 2, a few carmakers are on the precipice of Level 3. For example, Tesla’s Enhanced Autopilot , Ford’s BlueCruise , the Mercedes Drive Pilot, and General Motors’ Super Cruise bring the potential for Level 3. A few over-the-air software tweaks will turn the potential into reality. However, like a stood-up date who is all dressed up with nowhere to go, you will not find Level 3-designated highways as of yet.

What Carmakers Call Their Adaptive Cruise Control Systems

Is anyone surprised that carmakers can’t seem to agree on a single term for adaptive cruise control? How about “adaptive cruise control?” We can sort of forgive Mercedes for its Distronic cruise control. It was first, after all. However, can someone define “distronic?” Anyone, anyone? Nope because it’s a made-up word. So, why not now use adaptive cruise control? Mercedes isn’t alone. Many carmakers use unique terms for ACC. Some call it adaptive cruise control as the root and then tack something onto it.

Here’s a rundown of the terms the various carmakers use for ACC, even those that simply call it adaptive cruise control.

Is Adaptive Cruise Control Worth It?

We say yes. This is particularly true if you do a lot of highway driving. Moreover, the more sophisticated systems with full stop and start or a low-speed traffic-jam feature work great for city driving. Typically, ACC gets included in a trim level or some sort of optional driver-assistance package on new cars. You will rarely find it listed as a stand-alone option.

For example, the Hyundai Elantra SEL ($22,795 with destination fee) offers its Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go in its optional Convenience Package ($1,900). It also includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, Junction-Turning Detection, navigation, wireless phone charging, heated front seats, and more. We’d say that’s a bargain. On the other hand, the same ACC system is standard for the $27,395 Elantra Limited.

Can I Add Adaptive Cruise Control to My Car?

Yes, you will find aftermarket adaptive cruise control kits available. Depending on the features, they range in cost from $250 to nearly $4,000. That’s just the cost of the kits. The installation will add even more. For most involved electric-system installations, it’s best to get them done by a dealership or certified mechanic . We believe that’s the case with an ACC system. Installation cost depends on the sophistication of the system and the vehicle model.

What does adaptive cruise control do?

Using radar, laser, a forward-pointed camera, or some combination of the three, adaptive cruise control systems in vehicles hold a preset safe speed, while maintaining a safe following distance.

Which cars have adaptive cruise control?

ACC is either standard or available on most new cars. Some carmakers call it by a different name. For example, BMW calls its system Distance Control. When offered as an option, adaptive cruise control is usually bundled with other driver-assistance technologies.

How do you turn off adaptive cruise control?

Turning off adaptive cruise control works differently on every car. Typically, you apply the brakes to stop using the function. You can also hit the “cancel” button or turn off the function entirely. Check your car manual for specific instructions.

Cruise control light blinking / code 0605

  • Add to quote

Just wanted to share this information in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation. I have a 2014 nissan versa. A few weeks ago my cruise control light would randomly start blinking on and off rapidly while I was driving (and not even using the cruise control). No other issues noted, everything was running fine. I took it to the dealer who pulled a code 0605 which indicates the ECM needs replaced (a $1400 repair). I didn't think that sounded likely so I picked my car up and went to researching online. I found this website for infiniti cars which indicated it could be the cruise control brake safety switch. A youtube video, $25, and a part from ebay and we are back in business. I want to share the links but I guess since it's my first post, I can't. Thanks.

TL;DR: From what I gather, you basically use the throttle to reach your desired speed and while engaging throttle press and hold the down button on the left side. Additional throttle or braking will discontinue cruise. I saw the same video yesterday and I look forward to trying this out!
