I've used Focus a couple of times from NY-Philly due to necessity. The positives: buses run often and usually on time, Chargers on bus generally work, relatively cheap at $20 round trip, can book easily online at goto bus site, and convenient drop off locations for me (essentially both Chinatowns) The negatives are the buses are dirty, the people on the bus are rude and loud, and drives are at times are dangerous (I usually sit in the front and watch the driver). Bring your headphones because the people on the bus are loud and unruly. Generally avoid but if you have no other alternative at this cost, go with focus.

What's not to love? For $35, you can get a round trip pass from NY (pickup in Chinatown or midtown) to DC (Chinatown). You can order your tickets online by searching "gotobus" but let me tell you... you'll save $2 if you buy your ticket in person. Tickets are "open" here if you buy them in person. That means you look at the time you want to ride the bus and you arrive 30 minutes earlier than your desired departure time. When your bus is here, there will be someone inside announcing it (i.e. 2:30 to DC). When you're lined up to board, the driver/manager will collect your ticket. If you purchased your ticket online, you HAVE to give that printout of purchase to the people manning the ticket windows. There, you'll get a handwritten piece of paper with your time on it; that's your "ticket". I would probably avoid any afternoon-early evening departures because getting out of the city can be quite torturous! Imagine taking 2 hours just to get out of the city...on a Friday (they'll pick up at Chinatown and drive local to midtown for the second pickup). Pro tips: 1) bring a usb+portable charger- sometimes, the bus's USB port won't work 2) sit near the front and not the back- the bathroom smell from the back will creep forward 3) board in Chinatown because you get first dibs on seats! 4) buy tickets in person and you'll save $

When I ride any sort of bus, I should not have to worry if I am in safe hands or not. Normally bus rides via Focus Travel Agency are without incident but two days ago, I experienced a bus ride that has shaken my confidence in riding with this company until further notice. Upon arriving in NYC from Philly, I was not given enough time to retrieve my luggage by the Driver, Luis (not sure of spelling). He was belligerent with me when I could nor easily locate my luggage in the bus' outer luggage compartment. I apologized to him repeatedly when he nearly hit me on the back of the head when he grabbed the luggage compartment door and slammed it shut. I did make a complaint to the company's front desk staff and they were clearly very disturbed by my description of the incident. They told me they would speak with Luis and would contact me with any updates, and as such I must commend the office staff for the attention to my complaint. However, I do not feel safe riding with Focus Travel Agency so long as Luis remains employed here, let alone allowed to operate a bus anywhere. I hope Focus' management will discipline him appropriately as I do not want to cease doing business with a bus company that has treated me well for so long.

You get what you pay for with Focus travel. They have one of the cheapest tickets for NY to PHL so don't expect much. I haven't had any bad customer service experiences with Focus yet. Gets me from point A to point B efficiently and I go to Philadelphia every week. The schedule says the buses come every hour but sometimes they come late because of traffic and estimated time arrivals may differ due to that as well as the stopping to pump gas and the occasional riders that need to get off at Cherry Hill Mall or Exit 4. I must say that, you must BEWARE if you do decide to ride with Focus. The customers are EXTREMELY RUDE, especially the ones that think that because you're speaking English to them, they're entitled to ignore you. Multiple times I had to wait for the bus driver to explain to these passengers that they have to give up a seat if a bus is full. One older Asian lady spit on me because I waited for her to move her stuff. She didn't think I knew Chinese and was messaging on her phone how she needed to look busy so that I would find another seat. Then she proceeded to elbow me the entire ride. When we arrived in Philadelphia, she tried to push me into the aisle with her bag and then again down the stairs getting off the bus. There was one time the bus broke down but the bus driver tried his best to keep the crowd down as it was late in the night and people had places to be. I think they dealt with the situation fairly quickly because a bus arrived about an hour later ( we were halfway to Philadelphia).

Photo of Stan F.

Ehhh...girl behind counter was rude as hell. But $10 for tickets to philly for a bus that arrived only 15 minutes late...can't complain too much. Seats were a bit more cramped than the eastern bus line but still bearable for a 3 hour ride (if you're 5'7 and under). Not really sure what else to write about. PS: don't forget to get your tickets stamped at the window if you ordered online.

Photo of Chris C.

Best bus in town! And I've used 3 different Chinatown bus services (they are not all created equal), as well as bolt and megabus traveling between Philadelphia and NYC. I even rode the now defunct Fungwah bus back in the day.... Don't get all the Chinatown bus companies confused, they are independently operated and distinctly different. I found this out after HG bus refused to let me on the purple bus from hell because I had a Focus ticket apparently (yeah I thought all asian bus companies looked alike back then). Focus travel via Gotobus.com is by far the best one. The office in NYC is on 120 E Broadway, go in here to get a ticket. If you are using the Gotobus.com app to purchase online, also check in at the ticket window to get a ticket!!! I didn't do this, they were understanding but do yourself a favor don't make the same mistake as me. You'll pay a little more than the other Chinatown bus companies $12 each way, nyc-Philly, but generally less than mega and bolt. TIP: If you book online round trip, you get a $4 discount. What you get: - 5 stars. Safe bus ride - 5 stars. bilingual ticketing agent on the bus, they are very reasonable and nice - 4 stars. pretty nice fellow bus riders - 5 stars. door to door service between Chinatowns - 4 stars. clean updated bus - 5 stars. USB chargers at each seat that work - 5 stars. bus is on time - 3 stars. smelliness really depends on customers, ranges from great to slightly funky What you won't get - 3 stars. Orderliness with boarding the bus. Passengers crowd the bus before it's fully deboarded and cut in line. Not as bad as the other Chinatown bus though, but not as organized as bolt and mega. Arrive early to get a good seat. Overall, 5 stars for value and safety. For the price and availability (I book last minute a lot, and prices stay the same) you can't beat it. I love this bus!

Photo of April D.

Pay more for a better quality service!!!! I rode with this agency for two trips. Both equally as bad. I travelled From NY to DC and back. I am riding the bus as we speak. I'll try to keep it short. 1. It SMELLED!!! First and foremost, the buses were not swept or cleaned after each arrival. So we wouldn't know how long certain foods or trash have been left on the floor. The buses, literally, smelled like S!#%. It's as if they had toilet problems but decided not to clean or do a maintenance check. Ever. 2. The buses were old and decrepit. The buses really were falling apart. You can hear the frame shake & hear the metal parts rumble. Every time we hit a bump in the road, the frame would shake. The first bus I rode, the AC didn't blow cold air and died mid travel. The second bus, I had the driver ask for someone to help her nail a piece of the bus frame together because it was scrapping against the street. 3. It's not worth what you pay for. I understand if it's an hour or two travel. Maybe you can put up with the flaws but if you're travelling for 5 hours. It's not worth the headache. 4. In general, Cheap tickets attract a certain clientele. In one bus ride had a drunk girl pass out in the front, had a guy who cussed out the bus driver coz he was driving "too slow", and some creepy guy look at me and touch himself forcing me to move. I did report him. Although, REMEMBER, it's the luck of the draw. Not all experiences will be like mine. 5. If you're getting dropped off at Baltimore, MD. Be prepared to get dropped off at the back of some random building. In the dark. In an isolated area. There is no station or center. I did not have direct Customers service experience with them, so I can't directly comment. Although, judging by the quality of service they are providing, I wouldn't be too confident. My final advice: purchase at your own risk.

Photo of Anthony Z.

Up at 4:45am writing this review. Why? Because I'm trapped in a window seat by a 500 pound woman sitting next to me. Taking up half my seat. Her weight crushing against mine, ruining any chance I have of getting the slightest amount of sleep. Not only is my sleep ruined, but I've had to switch positions multiple times throughout the night to accommodate my seat partner's many "interesting" sleep positions. It ranges from forcing me to sit on the edge of my seat to leaning against the window to prevent being crushed by this large woman. Now, I understand this isn't the bus company's fault. However, what irritates me is that there are three OPEN seats in the front row taken by the bus's manager. Yes, all FOUR front row seats are taken by one person, the bus manager. He is gracefully sleeping, with his legs stretched out across the aisle, taking up all four seats in one row. When I wake him up and sit down, the conversation proceeds as follows: *bus manager wakes up* Bus Manager: Yo bro, what you think you doing? Me: Sorry, there seems to be a rather large woman sitting next to me. Bus Manager: So what? Get back in your seat. Me: I'm unable to sleep because of her. She's taking up half my seat, and constantly waking me up when she accidentally touches me. Bus Manager: Yeah and? You think you better than everyone else? No one else is sitting in the front row. Me: No but you see... Bus Manager: I don't care. Get back in your seat. No, I don't think I'm better than everyone else, but you certainly do, princess, sleeping gracefully with your body stretched across four seats. And I'm not the only one to get into an argument with him. He has threatened to kick other customers off the bus for minor things. Worst customer service for any bus company I've ever travelled with. Foot rest broken, USB ports are only on every other row rather than every row unlike most bus companies (assuming they want to cut costs in half installing them), no working Wi-Fi, no TV.

Photo of Ying C.

Reliable. Excellent for the price you paid. If you want more amenities and services, go somewhere else and pay more. This is no the bus company that you want. My experience was good from ny Chinatown to philadelphia. For those who complained, please keep in mind what you paid and what is the cost of doing business in NYC. Bus is not clean and you will not have high class bus mates. But if you want to go from one place to another at a cheaper price, this is the bus to go with.

Photo of Amber M.

It's the Chinatown bus. For $20, you can't expect luxury or comfort. The staff is incredibly unfriendly, buses dirty, and passengers crazy. All to be expected when you pay such a low fare...which is why I don't feel at all bad about giving out this one star (which would of course be 0 if there were such a rating).

News & features, winter center, news / weather news, one dead and at least 71 injured after severe turbulence hits singapore airlines flight.

By Duarte Mendonca, Kocha Olarn and Sophie Jeong, CNN

Published May 21, 2024 5:50 AM PDT | Updated May 21, 2024 11:04 AM PDT

Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 made an emergency landing in Bangkok, Thailand, on May 21, after the plane flew through ‘severe turbulence’, according to the airline. The plane was flying from London to Singapore.

(CNN) —  One person has died and at least 71 others were injured on board a Singapore Airlines plane that encountered  severe turbulence   on a flight from London to Singapore.

The Boeing 777-300ER plane diverted to Bangkok, according to a post on the Singapore Airlines Facebook page. It said 211 passengers and 18 crew were on board.

The company said initially in a post that 30 passengers had been hurt in the mid-air disruption and were being treated in hospitals, while other travelers were receiving outpatient care at the airport.

The one person who died was a 73-year-old British man, General Manager of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport Kittipong Kittikachorn said on Tuesday.

The flight landed in the Thai capital at 3:45 p.m. local time (4:45 a.m. ET) Tuesday.

focus travel inc

Kittikachorn, who inspected the aircraft, told CNN he was informed of the emergency landing 10 minutes before it touched down. He also said that several passengers had sustained broken arms but that the majority of injuries were cuts and bruises.

Some injured passengers were sent to the nearby Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, Kittikachorn said, adding that almost 200 travelers were waiting to take onwards flight to their destinations.

The hospital said in an update that at least 71 people had been injured, including citizens from Malaysia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Spain, the United States and Ireland. It also said six people are severely injured. Earlier, Kittikachorn had said seven people were critically injured.

The aviation tracking site FlightRadar24 says, based on its data, that the turbulence on Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 occurred over Myanmar at approximately 7:49 a.m. UTC (3:49 a.m. ET).

This lines up with  a statement from the airline  stating that the plane, “encountered sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin [a river in Myanmar] at 37,000 feet, about 10 hours after departure.”

FlightRadar24 said in  a blog post  that, according to its data, at that time, ”the flight encountered a rapid change in vertical rate, consistent with a sudden turbulence event.”

The data show the flight changing course about 14 minutes later. The airline says, “The pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the aircraft to Bangkok.”

The FlightRadar24 data show the flight, which was cruising at 37,000 feet, suddenly dipping then rapidly climbing a few hundred feet before dipping and climbing again and then finally settling back at its cruising altitude. The entire disruption took about 90 seconds, according to the data, but resulted in dozens of injuries, including a fatality.

Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam issued a statement on his social media accounts, expressing “condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”

“We do not have the details of those affected, but know that the government ministries and agencies, as well as SIA, are doing their utmost to support all those affected and working with the authorities in Bangkok, where the plane had been diverted to,” Shanmugaratnam said.

Singapore’s Minister for Transport Chee Hong Tat said he was “deeply saddened to learn about the incident,” in a statement posted to his social media.

“Ministry of Transport, Singapore, Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport officials as well as SIA [Singapore Airlines] staff are providing support to the affected passengers and their families,” he said.

Singapore’s Ministry of Transport said in a  statement  that it was investigating the situation involving SQ321 and its Transport Safety Investigation Bureau was in touch with their Thai counterparts.

After recent turbulence-related injuries on flights, AccuWeather’s Emmy Victor looks at what causes turbulence and how passengers can stay safe while traveling.

Turbulence occurs when a plane flies through clashing bodies of air moving at widely different speeds.

With light and moderate turbulence passengers might feel a strain against their seatbelt, and unsecured items could move around the cabin.

But in severe cases turbulence can throw passengers around the cabin, causing severe injuries and occasionally death.

In March 2023, violent movements  on a private jet  resulted in the death of a former White House official, though an investigation later found that weather  was not involved in that incident . That incident came just days after seven people were transported to hospitals after a  separate commercial flight  hit significant turbulence.

In July 2023, seven people were injured on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Sydney, Australia, when the plane was buffeted by severe turbulence, and  36 people  were injured on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Arizona to Honolulu in December 2022, with 20 people taken to emergency rooms.

A September 2022 study predicts that clear-air turbulence will increase significantly around the globe by the period 2050-2080, in particular along the busiest flight routes, and the strongest type of turbulence will increase the most.

Singapore Airlines is often considered  one of the world’s safest carriers .

Its only previous fatal accident was in October 2000 when flight  SQ006 crashed  when the Boeing 747-400 took off from a closed runway in Taiwan amid heavy rain, killing 83 on board.

Boeing has said it is in touch with the Singaporean carrier and is “ready to support them.” The manufacturer is deferring further questions to the airline and local authorities.

This story and headline have been updated with additional developments.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly described a March 2023 incident involving a private jet. The National Transportation Safety Board later ruled weather had not been involved in the violent movements of that plane.

Ukraine war latest: Armed ship destroyed in Crimea, Kyiv says; controversial US television host launches show in Russia

Ukraine says it hit and destroyed the Russian missile ship Tsiklon in Crimea over the weekend. Meanwhile, analysts say Moscow is seeking to draw out Kyiv's forces - as Putin makes another significant change to his cabinet.

Tuesday 21 May 2024 23:00, UK

  • Russia using 'understaffed and incohesive forces' in bid to draw out Ukrainian troops
  • Big picture: What you need to know as war enters new week

We're pausing our coverage of the Ukraine war for the moment.

Scroll through the blog below to catch up on today's developments.

Vladimir Putin has praised the late president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and said he was a "reliable partner".

Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash near the Azerbaijan border over the weekend along with his foreign minister and seven others.

Speaking on the leader, Mr Putin said he was "a man of his word" who carried out any agreements the pair made.

"He was truly a reliable partner, a man sure of himself, who acted in the national interest," Russian news agencies quoted Mr Putin as telling Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia's lower house of parliament.

"He was, of course, a man of his word and it was always good to work with him. What I mean is if we came to an agreement on something, you could be sure the agreement was carried out."

The Kremlin leader asked Mr Volodin, who will be attending memorial events in Iran, to pass on "words of our sincere condolences in connection with this tragedy".

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has strengthened political, trade and military ties with Iran in a deepening relationship that the US and Israel view with concern.

Heavy fighting in the Pokrovsk area in eastern Ukraine has forced Ukrainian troops to engage in "manoeuvres," the Ukrainian military's general staff have said.

Their report said Pokrovsk, northwest of the Russian-held city of Donetsk, remains the front's "hottest" sector.

"In some areas, the situation requires our troops to engage in manoeuvres," the general staff report reads.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has referred to the region and adjacent areas as "extraordinarily difficult" in his nightly video address.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said allies are taking too long when it comes to decisions on military support for Ukraine.

In an interview with Reuters, the Ukrainian leader said every decision which everyone came to was "late by around one year".

"But it is what it is: one big step forward, but before that two steps back. So we need to change the paradigm a little bit," he said.

"When we're quick, they fall behind. And then there's a gap - six, eight months of unpassed (aid) packages, and then two-three months of supplies - and a year goes by. We would like not to lose the advantage."

Mr Zelenskyy also said Ukraine had never used Western weapons on Russian territory.

A senior Russian diplomat has said that the EU plan to channel profits from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine would have "unpredictable" consequences, according to the TASS news agency.

According to TASS, Kirill Logvinov, Russia's acting permanent representative to the EU in Brussels, told Russia journalists: "The only predictable thing is that those in the EU will be obliged sooner or later to return to our country what has been stolen."

For context : In March the European Commission proposed transferring to Ukraine profits generated by Russian central bank assets frozen in Europe.

The plan would see 90% channeled through the European Peace Facility fund to buy weapons for Ukraine.

The rest would be used for recovery and reconstruction.

Russia's defence ministry has said it has begun a round of drills involving tactical nuclear weapons.

The exercises were announced by Russian authorities this month in response to remarks by senior Western officials about the possibility of deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine.

It was the first time Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, although its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises.

According to the ministry's statement, the first stage of the new drills include nuclear-capable Kinzhal and Iskander missiles.

The maneuvers are taking place in the southern military district, which consists of Russian regions in the south.

A Moscow court has ordered a Russian journalist who covered the trials of the late Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny and other dissidents must  remain in custody pending an investigation and trial on charges of extremism.

Antonina Favorskaya was arrested in March.

She is accused of collecting material, producing and editing videos and publications for Navalny's Foundation for Fighting Corruption, which had been outlawed as extremist by Russian authorities, according to court officials.

Today, Moscow's Basmanny district court ordered that she remain in custody until at least 3 August.

Kira Yarmysh, Navalny's spokeswoman, said earlier that Ms Favorskaya did not publish anything on the foundation's platforms and suggested that Russian authorities have targeted her because she was doing her job as a journalist.

Former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson has launched his own show in Russia.

The controversial US media personality, who this year became the first Western journalist to interview Vladimir Putin since Russia invaded Ukraine, will host his show on the state-owned Russia 24 (Rossiya 24).

In the first episode, Carlson will discuss the dangers of ticks and Lyme disease.

Who is Carlson?

Carlson, who has been a vocal supporter of Mr Putin in the past, was sacked from Fox News in April last year.

He took up the prime-time weekday evenings spot on Fox News in 2016 with his show Tucker Carlson Tonight, and quickly established himself as a key player in the network and an influential voice in Republican politics.

The presenter often embraced conspiracy theories and far-right issues. He repeatedly questioned the efficacy of COVID vaccines and compared mandates to "Nazi experiments".

While he found success with viewers, his inflammatory comments caused some advertisers to distance themselves from the programme.

After his departure from Fox News he rebooted his show on X last year, calling Elon Musk's site the last big remaining platform to allow free speech.

Ukraine says it has destroyed the last Russian warship armed with cruise missiles that was stationed on the occupied peninsula of Crimea.

It comes after we reported earlier comments by Ukraine's military, which said they had hit the Russian missile ship Tsiklon (see post at 3.09pm).

Ukraine's military reported conducting a long-range attack that destroyed the Russian minesweeping navy vessel on Sunday and said it needed more time to confirm what else had been damaged.

"According to updated information, the Ukrainian defence forces hit a Russian project 22800 Tsiklon missile ship in Sevastopol, on the night of 19 May," the general staff said today.

The Ukrainian navy later said on X that the vessel had been "destroyed".

Ukrainian navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said the Tsiklon was Russia's "last cruise missile carrier" based on the peninsula.

Tsiklon never fired a cruise missile while on active service, Mr Pletenchuk said in televised comments.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014 and is home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet headquarters at Sevastopol.

The Russian defence ministry has not commented.

European Union countries say they have reached an agreement to use the profits from frozen Russian assets to provide military support to Ukraine and help rebuild the war-torn country.

The 27-nation EU is holding around €210bn (£179bn) in Russian central bank assets, most of it frozen in Belgium, in retaliation for Moscow's war against Ukraine.

It estimates that the interest on that money could provide around €3bn (£2.56bn) each year.

Ukraine is desperate for more weapons and ammunition as Russia presses its military advantage.

EU headquarters said 90% of the money would be put into a special fund known as the European Peace Facility that many EU countries already use to get reimbursed for arms and ammunition they send to Ukraine.

The other 10% would be put into the EU budget. The programmes that this money funds would help to bolster Ukraine's defence industry or to help with reconstruction, should some countries object to their share being used for military purposes.

A small group of member states, notably Hungary, refuse to supply weapons to Ukraine.

Chicago Muslim advocates travel to Illinois capitol to call for cease-fire in Gaza

By Chris Tye

Updated on: May 1, 2024 / 7:32 PM CDT / CBS Chicago

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CBS) – Muslim American advocates from Chicago traveled down to the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield on Wednesday to urge lawmakers to also call for a cease-fire in Gaza.

Usually, action days in Springfield focus on legislative issues related to Illinois' Muslim community, but this year, the organizers said, is different. On Wednesday, they tried to widen the calls for a cease-fire in Gaza and to bring home the realities of what life for those directly affected by the war is really like.

"We thought we are going there to help our medical colleagues to do some management with the mass casuaity events, but what we witnessed was massacre," said Dr. Chandra Hassan of the University of Illinois Chicago.

Hassan was among those who traveled to Springfield. He talked about spending two-and-a-half weeks in Gaza last January. He shared what he saw with the gathered crowd and legislators.

"You can't describe those kinds of wounds we witnessed," Hassan said. "Those kinds of wounds are not even in the trauma textbooks, surgical books."

Calls for a cease-fire were among the messages shared by the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago, whose leaders also reacted to the growing pro-Palestinian protests on campuses that include DePaul and the University of Chicago.

"I saw some pictures, some student had a hammer in his hand, at a window," said CIOGC Executive Director Gregory Abdullah Mitchell. "We do not endorse lawlessness. We do not endorse the breaking of the laws. But what we do endorse and what we do advocate is that the leaders of the universities must open the door and have meaningful conversations."

At Northwestern University, that conversation led to protests ramping down and tents coming down after an agreement was reached between the school and some protest leaders.

Abdullah Mitchell didn't comment on whether that was the right way forward, saying he was "not familiar with the parameters of the agreement."

As other schools grapple with how to manage campus encampments, the message in Springfield from hundreds of protesters was both pointed, against U.S. leaders helping fund Israel's attack, and hopeful.

"We must stand in solidarity with all faiths, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, uniting for the humanity to the people of Gaza," said Shafeek Abubaker, of the CIOGC.

Demonstrators also called on legislators to take action like making it easier for Muslim Americans to attain auto insurance and lower prescription drug prices. But their top issue was calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.

CBS 2 reached out to multiple state lawmakers about the calls from the group, but none returned those requests for comment.
