Ozzy Osbourne cancels 2023 tour dates, says spinal injury means his 'touring days have ended'

Singer Ozzy Osbourne performs at halftime during the NFL game between the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 8, 2022, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

Heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne announced the cancellation of his 2023 tour dates in the U.K. and continental Europe.

Osbourne issued a statement early Wednesday saying damage to his spine suffered in an accident four years ago will prevent him from touring.

“I am honestly humbled by the way you’ve all patiently held onto your tickets for all this time, but in all good conscience, I have now come to the realization that I’m not physically capable of doing my upcoming European/UK tour dates, as I know I couldn’t deal with the travel required,” Osbourne said.

The 74-year-old Grammy winner and former vocalist for the metal band Black Sabbath said “my singing voice is fine” but said he remained physically weak following three operations, stem cell treatments, physical therapy and Hybrid Assistive Limb treatment, which uses a robotic exoskeleton to help improve movement and balance.

He thanked his family, fans, band and crew members and fellow metal pioneers Judas Priest.

“Never would I have imagined that my touring days would have ended this way,” Osbourne said. “My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country.”

Ticket refunds will be available at the point of purchase, the statement said.

Osbourne  previously canceled tour dates  in Europe and North America in 2019 due to health problems, including a “bad fall” in which he said he injured vertebrae in his neck.

The singer, who enjoyed solo success after leaving Black Sabbath, announced in 2020 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a nervous system disorder that affects movement.

Osbourne and the other three members of Black Sabbath were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Osbourne and his family, including his wife, Sharon, and two of his three children were the stars of their own reality show called “The Osbournes.”

He said Wednesday that his voice is fine, but due to a spinal injury he sustained four years ago, "is still physically weak." His recovery has included three operations, stem cell treatments, physical therapy and Cybernics (HAL), a robotic treatment. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2020.

Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne is retiring from touring because he says he is “not physically capable” of dealing with the travel.

The 74-year-old “No More Tears” and “Crazy Train” singer made the announcement Tuesday, canceling his upcoming tour stops while marking four years since a major accident that damaged his spine and resulted in a life-altering operation last year that removed and realigned pins in his neck and back.

“My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage. My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions, and most recently groundbreaking Cybernics (HAL) Treatment, my body is still physically weak,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said in a statement posted on social media.

His No More Tours II farewell outing was set to resume in May with stops in Finland, Germany, his native U.K. and others through June. (Osbourne embarked on the first No More Tours tour in 1992.)

The Prince of Darkness, using more colorful language, added that disappointing his fans upsets him and that he never would have imagined that his touring days would end this way.

“My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country,” he said, thanking his wife Sharon Osbourne, band, crew and longtime friends and the tour’s opening act, Judas Priest.

The legendary heavy metal singer also thanked his fans for their “endless dedication, loyalty, and support, and for giving me the life that I never ever dreamed I would have.”

In 2018, just three days after postponing three of the final four dates on his North American No More Tours 2 farewell tour, Osbourne canceled all four of those dates because of continuing medical problems. The “Bark at the Moon” singer underwent surgery the weekend prior at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for an infection in his right hand.

“The Osbournes” reality TV star revealed in 2020 that he had Parkinson’s disease, a brain disorder that can cause slow movement, stiffness and loss of balance, among other issues. Speaking with The Times in 2020, he said that he’d been diagnosed with the disease in 2003 and that he was on medication to manage it.

“I’m not dying from Parkinson’s. I’ve been working with it most of my life,” he said. “I’ve cheated death so many times. If tomorrow you read ‘Ozzy Osbourne never woke up this morning,’ you wouldn’t go, ‘Oh, my God.’ You’d go, ‘Well, it finally caught up with him.’”

Later that year, he said his most pressing health issues were related to a fall he took in 2019 that left him with lingering pain.

The ex Black Sabbath frontman also suffers with Parkinson’s disease, which he revealed in 2020.

The rocker tweeted on Wednesday morning (1 February) calling the decision “one of the hardest” things he’s had to tell fans.

In a statement released Wednesday, Osbourne, 74, wrote that he “is not physically capable” of the travel necessary for his U.K. and Europe tour dates scheduled for later this year.

“This is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to share with my loyal fans,” Osbourne wrote. “As you may all know, four years ago this month, I had a major accident, where I damaged my spine. My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage.

“My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions, and most recently groundbreaking Cybernics (HAL) treatment, my body is still physically weak.”

The former Black Sabbath frontman wrote he’s upset at “the thought of disappointing my fans.” The singer said his team is working on a way for Osbourne to perform without having to travel from city to city.

“Never would I have imagined that my touring days would have ended this way,” he said.

Osbourne’s tour, called the No More Tours II, was announced in 2017. It was postponed in 2019 to allow the singer to recover from his spinal injury.

The No More Tours II was set to begin in Helsinki, Finland in May.

In September 2022, Osbourne released his 13th solo album, Patient Number 9 . The album is nominated for a 2023 Grammy for Best Rock Album. The lead single, also called Patient Number 9 , features the late Jeff Beck, who died earlier this month . The song is up for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance at the Grammys.

The track Degradation Rules (featuring Tony Iommi) is also nominated for a Grammy for Best Metal Performance.

The ‘No More Tours 2’ UK and European shows were pushed back a number of times due to the musician’s poor health and the pandemic, before being rescheduled for 2023. He was due to perform shows in Nottingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester, Dublin, London and Birmingham across May and June.

Osbourne has suffered a number of health problems in recent years due to Parkinson’s Disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2003 , but  didn’t announce publicly until 2020 .

The singer’s wife Sharon  recently opened up about her husband’s diagnosis , sharing: “Suddenly, your life just stops – life as you knew it.”

Last year, he also underwent major surgery  to remove and realign pins in his neck and back. The surgery was a success, with the singer later  thanking fans  for their “their thoughts, prayers and well-wishes” after he was discharged.

The Prince of Darkness’ 13th studio album came out in September last year, earning four-stars from  NME  in a review that described the record as a “fizzing piece of hard-rock magic” .

In November, the album then secured four Grammy nods  – Best Rock Performance, Best Metal Performance, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album – which  Osbourne said at the time left him feeling “overwhelmed” .

Ozzy Osbourne 's touring days are over amid health issues.

The British rock legend, best known for fronting Black Sabbath, called off his 2023 tour dates in the U.K. and Europe on Wednesday, citing health issues. His health woes date back two decades after a quad bike accident, he recently detailed in an interview with Yahoo , but things got worse four years ago after a fall at home, which led to neck and spine issues. Around that time, he was also diagnosed with Parkinson's disease .

"This is probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to share with my loyal fans," the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee said a statement on social media. "As you may all know, four years ago, this month, I had a major accident, where I damaged my spine. My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage. My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions, and most recently groundbreaking Cybernics (HAL) Treatment, my body is still physically weak."

Ozzy, who has been performing since the 1960s, said he was "humbled" that fans held onto their tickets when he had to delay his world tour after his 2019 fall. While he remained hopeful he would take the stage again, "in all good conscience, I have now come to the realization that I’m not physically capable of doing my upcoming European/UK tour dates."

The Prince of Darkness said the travel required to tour is too much, noting, "Believe me when I say that the thought of disappointing my fans really F***S ME UP, more than you will ever know."

At 74, the "Crazy Train" singer's wrote, "Never would I have imagined that my touring days would have ended this way."

Ozzy said his team is trying to come up with ways that would allow him to "perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country." For instance, in September, her performed during halftime of an NFL game between the Los Angeles Rams, which was broadcast.

He ended his message by thanking his family, his band, the crew and Judas Priest — whom he was touring with. He gave a special shout out to his fans "for their endless dedication, loyalty, and support, and for giving me the life that I never ever dreamed I would have. I love you all…"

While talking to Yahoo in December , Ozzy said his one hope for 2023 was to "get back on that stage."

He said, "I've gotta get back on that stage. It's driving me nuts, not being able to. I can't relax. I've always gotta be doing something. … I mean, I could say let's call it a day, but I can't stop. There's nothing like a good gig, and there's nothing like a bad gig — because a bad gig makes you wanna do a good gig, better than before! A great gig is better than any sex or drug. There's nothing to compare it to."

He also talked about how just a few years ago, slowing down was unimaginable.

"I can remember when I was 69 and thinking, 'I wonder when I'll start to feel old, when I'll start to feel everything?'" he said. "And suddenly, when I turned 70, the floodgates opened. It was one thing after the other. … This is the longest time I've been sick in my life."

Despite the health setbacks, which have resulted in him needing a cane to get around, his album Patient Number 9 , released in September, earned him his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart. It also received four Grammy nominations — his most nominations ever for a single album.

It's been a rough go for both Ozzy and his wife of 40 years, Sharon, who had her own health emergency in December. She was shooting with their son Jack when she passed out for 20 minutes on Dec. 13 and was rushed to the hospital. Earlier this month, Sharon — Ozzy's manager — was asked to explain what happened and she said, "I wish I could, but I can't. It was the weirdest thing" and tests turned up no immediate cause.

Last year, Ozzy and Sharon announced plans to move back to Buckinghamshire, England for the final chapter of their lives. Sharon has been working there since her firing from The Talk   in 2021. The couple — original reality TV stars since their MTV hit The Osbournes in the 2000s — said the move would be filmed for a new BBC reality show, Home to Roost , and a network spokeswoman told Deadline on Wednesday that the new show will proceed despite Ozzy's announcement about retiring from touring. There will be 10 30-minute episodes — featuring the couple as well as kids Jack and Kelly Osbourne — and air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Despite the couple's move across the pond, it's not goodbye to the U.S. Their three children — also including Aimée — are based in L.A., and that is also where the couple's five grandchildren reside. Plus, they haven't yet sold their L.A. home, which is still on the market with an asking price of $17.5 million .

The heavy metal singer-songwriter has struggled with a number of physical ailments over the years. In 2003, he almost died in an ATV accident when his quad flipped onto him while he was riding around his London estate. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease within the same year.

Osbourne also underwent an operation after suffering a bad fall in 2019. He had surgery on his neck which messed up his nerves.

The former Black Sabbath frontman opened up about his physical ailments and his ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease in an interview with The Observer.

"With the pressing on the spinal column, I got nerve pain," Ozzy added. "I’d never f---ing heard of nerve pain! You know when you’re a kid, and you’re playing with snow and your hands get really cold? Then you go in and you pour on hot water, and they start getting warm? And you get those chills? And it f---ing hurts? It’s like that."

"The screws had come loose, and were chipping away at the bone. And the debris had lodged under his spine," wife Sharon Osbourne explained to the outlet about his back issues.

Last December, Sharon also was rushed to the hospital after a medical emergency. Their son Jack revealed his mother was filming an episode of "Night of Terror" before the incident occurred.

In addition to Kelly and Jack, Ozzy and Sharon also share daughter Aimee. Ozzy also has Louis and Jessica from his previous marriage to ex-wife Thelma Riley.

Ozzy Osbourne Cancels North American ‘No More Tours 2’ Dates Due to Illness

By Kory Grow

Ozzy Osbourne has canceled the upcoming North American leg of his No More Tours 2 as he seeks treatment for health setbacks. Early last year, the singer suffered a fall that required surgery, sidelining him from touring. Earlier this year, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease .

“I’m so thankful that everyone has been patient because I’ve had a shit year,” Osbourne said in a statement. “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to get to Switzerland for treatment until April and the treatment takes six to eight weeks. I don’t want to start a tour and then cancel shows at the last minute, as it’s just not fair to the fans. I’d rather they get a refund now and when I do the North American tour down the road, everyone who bought a ticket for these shows will be the first ones in line to purchase tickets at that time.”

Full refunds, including fees, will be available at the point of purchase. Those who had bought tickets to the tour will get first access when rescheduled dates go on sale.

The North American leg of the trek was set to kick off on May 27th in Atlanta and run through a July 31st gig in Las Vegas. A European leg is still on the books and will kick off in Newcastle, England on October 23rd; the cancellation does not affect these dates.

The timing for the cancelled U.S. dates is unfortunate, as Osbourne is in the midst of promoting a new album, Ordinary Man , which comes out Friday. He still has an in-store signing at Amoeba Hollywood planned for that day, as well as a tattoo-parlor takeover on Thursday, where fans will get to hear the album in full while receiving an Ozzy-inspired tattoo.

Ordinary Man features a star-studded group of collaborators including Elton John, Post Malone, and members of Guns N’ Roses, Rage Against the Machine, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Post Malone’s producer, Andrew Watt, helmed the record and played guitar on it. Osbourne recently explained at a SiriusXM event in Los Angeles that making the record with Watt was therapeutic for him. “I’d been feeling like fucking death,” he said. “And Andrew was a shining light for me.”

Ozzy Osbourne Cancels North American Tour Due to 'Various Health Issues'

Last month, Ozzy Osbourne revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease

Ozzy Osbourne ‘s upcoming North American tour has been canceled amid the musician’s various health issues .

Osbourne, 71, announced the news in a statement on his website on Monday, explaining that he made the decision to cancel the No More Tours 2 tour in order to seek medical treatment in Europe.

The cancellation came after the Black Sabbath rocker had previously postponed many of his 2019 performances .

“I’m so thankful that everyone has been patient because I’ve had a s— year,” Osbourne said. “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to get to Switzerland for treatment until April and the treatment takes six to eight weeks.”

“I don’t want to start a tour and then cancel shows at the last-minute, as it’s just not fair to the fans,” the musician continued. “I’d rather they get a refund now and when I do the North American tour down the road, everyone who bought a ticket for these shows will be the first ones in line to purchase tickets at that time.”

Last month, Osbourne revealed that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease . In the last year, the singer has also battled pneumonia and suffered injuries in a fall in his Los Angeles home.

Osbourne shared his Parkinson’s diagnosis during an appearance on Good Morning America alongside his family — wife Sharon Osbourne and his children Jack Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne . According to the Mayo Clinic , Parkinson’s is a nervous system disorder that affects movement.

“Coming from a working-class background, I hate to let people down. I hate to not do my job,” Ozzy — who told GMA he is now taking Parkinson’s medication and nerve pills — said in the interview. “And so when I see my wife goin’ to work, my kids goin’ to work, everybody’s doing — tryin’ to be helpful to me, that gets me down because I can’t contribute to my family, you know.”

During the interview, Sharon also revealed that Ozzy’s next step is heading to “a professional in Switzerland” in April who specializes in “getting your immune system at its peak.”

She added: “We’ve kind of reached a point here in this country where we can’t go any further because we’ve got all the answers we can get here.”

Days after revealing his diagnosis, Osbourne attended the Grammy Awards last month , walking with a cane.

“This last year has been hell for me,” the rocker said on the red carpet. “I’ve had surgery on my neck. I’ve announced to the world that I’ve got Parkinson’s. It’s been one rock ‘n’ roll year for me.”

OZZY OSBOURNE Officially Cancels 2023 European Tour, Says His Touring Days Are Over

Ozzy Osbourne 's previously announced European tour with guests JUDAS PRIEST , originally set for 2019 and then rescheduled three times, has officially been canceled.

Late Tuesday night (January 31), Ozzy released the following statement: "This is probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to share with my loyal fans. As you may all know, four years ago, this month, I had a major accident, where I damaged my spine. My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage. My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions, and most recently groundbreaking Cybernics (HAL) Treatment, my body is still physically weak.

"I am honestly humbled by the way you've all patiently held onto your tickets for all this time, but in all good conscience, I have now come to the realization that I'm not physically capable of doing my upcoming European/UK tour dates, as I know I couldn't deal with the travel required. Believe me when I say that the thought of disappointing my fans really FUCKS ME UP, more than you will ever know.

"Never would I have imagined that my touring days would have ended this way. My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country.

"I want to thank my family……my band…….my crew……my longtime friends, JUDAS PRIEST , and of course, my fans for their endless dedication, loyalty, and support, and for giving me the life that I never ever dreamed I would have.

"I love you all…"

Ozzy 's farewell European tour was set to begin in Helsinki, Finland in May.

Ticket refunds are available at point of purchase.

Ozzy initially scrapped his entire 2019 schedule as he recovered from surgery to repair an injury sustained while dealing with a bout of pneumonia. The tour was postponed a second time after Ozzy continued to deal with health issues following a fall in his Los Angeles home. That fall "aggravated years-old injuries" from an ATV accident that occurred in 2003. The tour was pushed back a third time in October 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Had Ozzy 's European tour with JUDAS PRIEST tour taken place in May 2023, it would have been more than four years later than originally planned, and almost five years after tickets first went on sale in September 2018.

In December, Ozzy was spotted leaning on a cane while shopping at the luxury supermarket Erewhon Market in Los Angeles. A female assistant helped him maneuver his shopping cart through the store. The 74-year-old is continuing to deal with health woes, including a serious spinal injury that has left him struggling to walk even six months after another surgery.

But he told SiriusXM : "I still have a lot in the tank. I'm determined to get back on the stage again. I'm still in recovery, and I have a goal. And my goal is to get back on stage. It's the driving force in me. I miss my audience. I miss doing gigs. I miss my crew. I miss my band. I miss the whole thing.

"My family has been so good," he added. "I am the man of the family, but I have never been this laid up in my life."

Three years ago, Ozzy publicly revealed his battle with Parkinson's disease. The singer was first diagnosed with the neurological disorder back in 2003, but he didn't disclose that he was stricken with the disease until a January 2020 appearance on "Good Morning America" .

Eighteen years ago, Ozzy said that he had been diagnosed with Parkin syndrome, a genetic condition which has symptoms similar to that of Parkinson's disease, such as body shakes. At the time, he said that he was relieved his debilitating body tremors were from Parkin and not his lifetime of drug abuse.

Will Ozzy Osbourne Be Able to Perform at the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony?

The Black Sabbath rocker has largely retreated from live performances amid a series of spinal operations over the past few years

Will Ozzy Osbourne return to the stage to celebrate his Rock Hall induction?

The rock legend will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year as a solo artist in its 2024 class, marking his second entry into the organization following Black Sabbath's induction in 2006.

After largely retreating from live performances due to undergoing a series of spinal operations related to structural damage sustained from a 2019 fall, Osbourne opened up to Billboard in a new interview about whether he'll be able to perform at the Rock Hall induction ceremony in October.

"You never know," the 75-year-old "Crazy Train" singer told the outlet, simply teasing that his outfit for the event "will most certainly be black."

Osbourne said he's "more than honored" to receive his second induction, which "feels big" and "different" from getting welcomed into the Rock Hall alongside his Black Sabbath bandmates, explaining, "because my solo career, it’s been a much larger part of my overall music career as a whole."

While the Prince of Darkness didn't confirm he'll perform at the show, he revealed he's feeling inspired to create music at the moment.

"I’m not putting a timetable on it," said the artist, who last released Patient Number 9 in 2022, "but I plan to start working on a new album sometime in the near future."

Osbourne last performed a brief set at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in England. In an interview with Metal Hammer last year, the musician revealed he'd undergone his "final surgery" and expressed desire to make "one more album" and return to performing live.

"I’ve had all the surgery now, thank God," Osbourne told the outlet. "I’m feeling OK — it was just dragging on. I thought I’d be back on my feet months ago, I just couldn’t get used to this mode of living, constantly having something wrong. I can’t walk properly yet, but I’m not in any pain any more and  the surgery on my spine  went great."

Osbourne will be inducted into the Rock Hall's performer category alongside fellow musicians Mary J. Blige ,  Cher ,  Dave Matthews  Band, Foreigner,  Peter Frampton , Kool & the Gang and A Tribe Called Quest.

Additionally, the late Alexis Korner, John Mayall and the late Big Mama Thornton will receive the musical influence award, while  the late Jimmy Buffett , MC5, Dionne Warwick and the late Norman Whitfield will receive the musical excellence award. Last year, Ozzy's wife Sharon spoke about her husband's lack of solo induction during an interview on The Adam Carolla Show . "They know that Ozzy deserves to be there," she said at the time.

"They know he’s been a solo artist. You’ve gotta be doing it for 25 years. He’s been 43 years as a solo artist," continued Sharon, 71. "He sold nearly a hundred million albums as a solo artist. So where is he? Induct him."

Ozzy determined to visit Black Sabbath bench

Ozzy Osbourne

“If I have to crawl, I’m going to be there! I’ll be coming up very soon," Osbourne said

  • Published 22 April 2024

Ozzy Osbourne is determined to visit the Black Sabbath bench in his home city of Birmingham "very soon", he says.

In a video interview with wife Sharon, the heavy metal star says he will come to see the bench on Broad Street, even "if I have to crawl there".

Osbourne, 75, announced he had Parkinson's disease in 2020, before playing live at the closing ceremony of Birmingham's Commonwealth Games in 2022. He retired from touring last year.

Sharon posted the exclusive interview as a "thank you" gift to Mike Olley, general manager of Westside BID, the man behind the creation and upkeep of the now world-famous bench.

Ozzy said he would visit the bench when he goes to see the bull named after him in New Street railway station , which was the star of the Games' opening ceremony.

The bench

The bench featuring the original members of Black Sabbath was unveiled in 2019

When asked how he felt about the bench, he said: "It’s an achievement. I mean, Black Sabbath, we all came from Birmingham, Aston precisely. I don’t know how to thank you all enough.”

Osbourne called the bench "fantastic" and said he had never thought there would ever be such a tribute in his home town.

In the video, Sharon talks fondly about the bench, saying: “It’s become a tourist attraction, because people go and sit and have their picture taken with which ever member of Black Sabbath they want.”

Ozzy answers: "Wow! That’s really cool, that’s really cool.”

During the conversation, he also recalls moments from his childhood in Birmingham, including how he used to “mind cars for tips” during Aston Villa’s home matches.

"I didn’t go to Birmingham city centre much as a kid, or it was on special occasions. I remember being in Aston more," he says.

“The thing about Aston, a lot of things have changed about it. My house in Lodge Road is still there and I used to go up there all the time when I had chance."

Sharon says her, Ozzy, and their children had all visited the house on Lodge Road.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne spoke fondly about the Black Sabbath bench

At the end of the interview, Sharon adds: “And we want to thank Mike Olley for making it happen.”

Ozzy then says: "Thank you Mike, thank you so much. What can I say! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Commenting on the new video, Mr Olley said it was a "fantastic gesture" from the couple and a "token of their gratitude over the bench".

“We were thrilled to receive it and are now pleased to be sending it out to the world to see," he said.

"Ozzy's memory and responses about Aston seem crystal clear, and it was great to see his obvious love of the bench.”

“I definitely wouldn’t say I was confident” about solo success, says Osbourne, adding that the 2021 induction of Randy Rhoads, his late songwriting partner, in the musical excellence category “made me feel we could be on to something. With every new music venture there’s always a certain amount of surprise that comes when you see the fans embrace it, because no one wants to make a record and have it flop. I feel like I was invited to a party in 1980, and it hasn’t stopped. Not bad for a guy who was fired from his last band.”

Comparing this induction to Sabbath’s “feels different,” Osbourne says, “because my solo career, it’s been a much larger part of my overall music career as a whole.” And after finishing fourth in the fan vote with more than 480,000 votes “feels more special, and I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels that way.”

The big question, of course, is whether Osbourne will perform at the induction ceremony on Oct. 19 in Cleveland. Though he’s effectively retired from touring due to a variety of health issues, including Parkinson’s disease, Osbourne continues to speak about performing again in some capacity. Could it be a two- or three-song set for the Rock Hall? “You never know,” he says, only promising that his outfit that night “will most certainly be black.”

Parties and punch-ups: behind the scenes at the 1989 Moscow Peace Festival

Just your everyday tale of the first (and probably last) anti-drug festival behind the Iron Curtain, with Bon Jovi, Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne, Cinderalla and Skid Row

Moscow Peace Festival - press conference

If the original 1969 Woodstock festival, with its gruesomely naked bodies, uninhibited drug-taking and unprecedented approach to crowd control – come on down, brothers and sisters, it’s all free! – had been emblematic of the countercultural ‘revolution’ of the late 1960s, then there can have been no better symbol of the money-grabbin’, drug-hypocritical, so-called safe-sex 1980s than the Moscow Music Peace Festival, held exactly 20 years – and what seemed like several lifetimes – later.

Never mind Live Aid . More people may remember that but Live Aid, with its ultra-focused fundraising and dizzying global clout, was more of a handholding 60s throwback than it was a genuine expression of the age; a cultural aberration that deliberately traded on me-first 80s guilt to ram home its almost anachronistic message: feed the children, help the poor, pretend Thatcher and Reagan never existed (and while you’re at it, help revive my career).

The Moscow Music Peace Festival, however, was a genuinely self-absorbed, glossed-over, height-of-the-80s, multimedia event; inspired by the deeply held desire of a convicted international drug-trafficker to avoid going to jail, and the fervent wishes of the famous bands whose careers he then guided not to be robbed of their Svengali, their bad daddy, their real money maker.

In short, the only interests the Moscow Music Peace Festival really served were of the people on the stage, not the ones off it.

Even the location for the event seemed bizarrely at odds with prevailing rock culture, certainly as it had existed up until 1989: since when had the Lenin Stadium in Moscow become a venue of choice for high-profile rock bands?

Since Doc McGhee said so, that’s when. McGhee, lest we forget, was then manager of five of the seven big-name bands that would appear on the Moscow bill: Bon Jovi , The Scorpions , Mötley Crüe , Skid Row and local Russian outfit Gorky Park.

While the only other big name acts appearing at the festival not connected to McGhee – Ozzy Osbourne and Cinderella – were both managed by people he’d worked with many times over the years (notably, Sharon Osbourne, on the Crüe’s breakthrough US tour opening for Ozzy six years before, and when Doc returned the favour by letting Lita Ford , then managed by Sharon, open for Bon Jovi on his 1988 world tour). McGhee was also a convicted felon.

Or as drummer Tommy Lee put it in the 2001 official Mötley Crüe biography, The Dirt : ‘Before [McGhee] met us, he was living a secret life that blew up on him when he got busted for helping smuggle 40,000 fucking pounds of pot from Colombia into North Carolina.

It wasn’t his only bust, because he was also being accused of associating with some well-connected madmen who had conspired to bring over a half a million pounds of blow [cocaine] and weed into the United States in the early 80s.’ The result, after he had pleaded guilty at the trial in North Carolina, was a relatively modest $15,000 fine, plus a five-year suspended prison sentence.

The reason he was able to get off with such a light sentence was his additional offer to put together an anti-drugs organisation, the Make A Difference Foundation, for which he would raise money the only legal way he knew how: via his music biz connections.

As Tommy said: ‘Doc knew that anyone else probably would have been in jail for at least 10 years for that shit, so he had to do something high-profile to show the court he was doing the world some good as a free man. And his brainstorm was to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Woodstock with the Moscow Music Peace Festival.’

But as Tommy ruefully concluded: "It was all bad from the moment we stepped on the plane… There was a so-called doctor on board, who was plying the bands who weren’t sober with whatever medicine they needed. It was clear that this was going to be a monumental festival of hypocrisy."

Not that I was yet aware of any of that as I stood there, sweaty and starving, at Cheremetyov airport in August 1989, waiting for the plane to land. I was still too flummoxed by Moscow itself to worry about what any of the bands might be thinking. I had arrived 48 hours before to find a city gripped by such a fearful heat that all the sensible (read: rich) people had fled the city for their summer dachas. Not that there was much to keep them there during the cooler months either.

Back then, before the Berlin Wall had fallen, the image Moscow conjured up in one’s mind was of a large, grey, unhappy citadel full of long faces and even longer food queues. The reality, however, was much worse than that. Rule number one, I discovered on my first night there, was There Is No Food. That is, nothing edible.

There were restaurants, of course, but mostly they were all closed. Usually for ‘cleaning’ which seemed to take place approximately six nights out of seven. Even when you did find a restaurant open it invariably wasn’t worth eating in. Learning to survive on the road means learning to eat anything. Fussy eaters are the first to throw in the towel.

As a result, over the years I had, at various trying moments, found myself eating smoked reindeer and bear-steaks in Helsinki; drinking the foul tap water of Rio de Janeiro; quaffing chilli-dogs and fries at fast-food counters all over America; and gorging myself on raw fish and cold rice in Tokyo.

But never in all my travels had I come across anything so frankly – or ironically – vomit-inducing as the Chicken Kiev in Russia. “Why do you think there are no dogs on the streets of Moscow?” whispered Dimitri, conspiratorially – one of the many official KGB-approved festival ‘guides’ and ‘interpreters’ – as I pushed away my plate again one night.

Rule number two: There Is No Such Thing As Russian Money. Well, actually, there was – it was called ‘the rouble’, but no self-respecting Russian trader would accept them as currency. Officially, a rouble was the equivalent of £1 sterling. But on the black market you could get up to 10 roubles for your pound.

Even then, however, they simply weren’t worth having. The only thing a stack of Roubles could buy you was a wooden doll and a big furry hat. The only real consumer goods available were on sale in the tourist-only stores, which took all major credit cards including American Express. In fact, the main currency in Moscow back then, spookily, was US dollars. And if you didn’t have the exact amount you could throw in a pack of Marlboros. For change, you might receive an assortment of dollar bills, 10- franc pieces and the occasional silver Deutsche Mark. For small change you might get handed a packet of orange-flavoured Tic-Tacs. No joke.

As for music… well, these days, no doubt, it’s as easy in Moscow to download your favourite emo codswallop from the internet as it is anywhere else. Back then, however, records and tapes were purchased almost exclusively on the black market. There was only one official record store in the whole of Moscow and when I visited it they were selling the sort of junk you might find at a car-boot sale – dusty Frank Ifield LPs and third-generation home-made cassettes of The Beatles.

Everything else was either banned or simply not available in the Russian market. The reason for this, as Jon Bon Jovi later told me, was that “they don’t pay royalties”. He said they’d actually let them release the Slippery When Wet album in the USSR, “but we did it knowing we’d never see any money for it”. If it hadn’t been for the fact that the album had already made $100 million throughout the rest of the world they’d never have been so generous. Along with most of the Western bands flying in for the festival, I was staying at a ‘five star’, £125 night shit-hole in the heart of Moscow, one block from Red Square and the imposing shadow of the Kremlin.

Sex workers lined the entrance to the hotel, and dark-suited security guards with the thick necks and thicker accents of Bond villains checked the ID of everyone wishing to enter. Enormous black cockroaches clung lazily to the walls and ceiling of the lobby. In my room on the 16th floor I was advised by one of the advance crew to check for bedbugs before turning in for the night.

In my bathroom the water running from the taps was the rich brown colour of yesterday’s piss; in the soap dish there sat a decomposing apple-core. The only towel provided was hanky-thin and crisp as an old rag. Two cigarette stubs floated lifelessly in the toilet pan. I was truly baffled. What the fuck had happened back there when they’d had the Great Revolution? Hadn’t anybody come out on top at the end of it? And if they had, where did those guys go to eat – and sleep?

I had only been in bed 10 minutes when there was a knock at my door. I thought it might be the KGB. But when I opened the door a crack there was only one of the sex workers from the lobby, asking if I’d like to buy champagne (“Only ten dollars, US,” she grinned uninvitingly) or perhaps more (“I keep you company, yes?” Er, no… thanks).

This happened every single night I was there. On the third night, already drunk and feeling emboldened after another day of dog-burgers and Tic-Tacs, I invited her in. She asked if she could bring a friend and out of nowhere another woman appeared. I gave them $20 and we opened a couple of bottles of champagne. It was so sickly sweet it made Asti Spumanti taste like Dom Perignon.

I sat there on the bed morosely, drinking it and asking them about Russia. They agreed that Russian life was “verrry bad”. Never mind, I said, Gorbachev was working on it, right?

“No!” they cried in unison. Gorbachev was “verrry, verry, verry bad!”

They said they’d preferred life under the old regime. At least then, they said, you could get meat and bread and didn’t have to queue for everything. I gave them another $20 when they left and went to sleep feeling worse than ever. Gorby may have been a huge hero to the West back then but apparently he didn’t mean shit to the ordinary whores and champagne guzzlers of Moscow.

I went to sleep thinking I understood but of course I didn’t. It goes without saying that the bands were even more nonplussed when they arrived. Walking through Red Square in the rain with Ozzy the day after he landed, he looked around glumly and summed up the general feeling surrounding the build-up to the festival when he said: “If I was living here full-time, I’d probably be dead of alcoholism, or sniffing car tyres – anything to get out of it. I can understand why there’s such an alcohol problem here. There’s nothing else to do.”

Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx from the Crüe were similarly downbeat when I ran into them backstage at the Lenin Stadium the day before the first of two shows.

“It might be an anti-drugs concert for some people,” said Nikki with a shrug, “but it’s not for us. It’s anti-abuse we’re talking about. That’s our belief. We’re not here to preach. If you tell a young kid not to do drugs, he’s gonna do it anyway. I know I did. We just say – if you cross the line between use and abuse, then that’s really tragic. I’ve crossed that line, many times. And I know from experience that it’s bad, and I try to tell kids not to cross the line. The rest is up to them.”

But then Ozzy and the Crüe were the only bands on the bill still struggling with ‘substance abuse’ issues of their own. Indeed, Ozzy would be arrested for attempting to strangle Sharon within weeks of returning home from Moscow, after drinking the case of Russian vodka miniatures he’d been presented with by the promoter. While Nikki, Vince and the guys were then famously fresh out of an enforced spell in rehab, riding a wagon they were still barely clinging to.

The Scorpions, the only band from the West on the bill to have played there before – 10 sold-out nights in Leningrad in March ’88 – were predictably more upbeat about the festival’s prospects for doing good, hamming it up during their soundcheck at the Lenin Stadium with an over-the-top version of Back In The USSR.

As vocalist Klaus Meine told me afterwards: “There’s everywhere a drug problem, all over the world. So I think it’s good that the bands stand together on one stage and give a message to the kids in the world: forget about the drugs. The best drug is music.”

In the end, it was left to the ever-more earnest Jon Bon Jovi to talk up the festival and put it into some kind of historical perspective. Driving around town with Jon one afternoon in the back of a Russian-made Zil limousine, I listened patiently as he waxed lyrical about Nelson Mandela, Bob Geldof and the impossibility of obtaining a cold beer in Moscow. The two major issues, said Jon, were “money and awareness”.

After the “production costs” all proceeds from the two concerts were clearly earmarked for various drug and alcohol ‘rehabilitation centres’ and ‘substance abuse awareness’ programmes, specifically in the Soviet Union, where until the onset of Gorby’s perestroika it was not officially admitted that a drug or alcohol problem even existed.

The extra “icing on the cake” was being able “to do something no other rock band has yet done”. Live Aid had been about helping the famine-victims of Africa; Moscow was about helping the kids closer to home.

“You know, at this stage of the game, it’s like you ask yourself, ‘What can we do that Led Zeppelin or the Rolling Stones or the Beatles didn’t already do?’ And being here is it. Not only do we get to come over in a good cause, we also get to put on the kind of rock show never before seen in the Soviet Union.” Meine peered out the window through his shades at the rain sleeting down then added: “People are always ready to question the motives behind why a bunch of rock stars would want to get together and do something like this. And, sure, inevitably you get a clash of egos occasionally. It’s not exactly the easiest thing to organise in the world, we sure found that out! But at the end of the day, I look at it like this.

"I wouldn’t have known about Nelson Mandela’s situation like I do now had I not been drawn to it because of the artists on Amnesty. Or I don’t think that I would’ve ever known about Ethiopia the way I do now if it wasn’t for Bob Geldof. So there is a wonderful icing on the cake. You get to see all these big performers that I enjoy too, but there’s ultimately a cause behind it. And that’s what raises your awareness.”

All of which was true. And yet behind the scenes several spectres still loomed. Not least that of Aerosmith , who not only pulled out of the event at the eleventh hour but also insisted their contribution to the official Make A Difference album (a version of The Doors ’ Love Me Two Times) be lifted from the final pressing, after privately expressing concern over where exactly all the money was actually going.

Then Ozzy threatened to pull out of the event the night before the first show when McGhee suddenly changed his placing on the bill from third to fourth, upgrading Mötley Crüe to the slot above Ozzy. McGhee took the threat seriously enough to return Ozzy to his original placing on the bill, just below the Scorpions and Bon Jovi, and Ozzy kept his promise and did the show.

What Mötley Crüe thought of this was only made clear 12 years later when The Dirt came out. According to Tommy, "Doc had told each band something different in order to get them to do the show. Jon Bon Jovi thought it was just another stop on his world headlining tour, while we thought it was supposed to be a small-scale, reduced set. Then the production manager broke the news to us that we’d been demoted. We were on before Ozzy and The Scorpions, I was fucking livid.

Doc was supposed to be our manager, looking out for our best interests, and he was favouring one of his newer clients, Bon Jovi, over us and the Scorpions, who, in Russia, were massive. 'Fuck you, Doc,' Nikki said to him. 'We didn’t fly all the way to Russia to be an opening act while Bon-fucking-Jovi gets to headline for an hour and a half. What’s up with that?'"

After the show was over, Tommy says, he ‘hunted Doc down and found him backstage. I walked right up to him and pushed him in his fat little chest, knocking him over onto the ground like a broken Weeble. As he lay there, Nikki broke the news: “Doc, you lied to us again. This time you’re fucking fired!”’

The last time I saw Jon Bon Jovi on that trip he was in Red Square, still looking for a cold beer.

“Have you discovered any of the night life here yet?” he asked me hopefully.

I shook my head. We stood there on the steps of St. Asille’s Cathedral in Red Square, along with all the other out-of-towners and tourists, waiting to watch the changing of the guard at the gates of the Kremlin. I don’t think either of us knew what difference any of it really made…

It’ll be alright on the night…

Amid all the backstage chaos, just how did the Moscow shows go down?

Despite the behind-the-scenes bickering – Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee even punched out promoter Doc McGhee when he realised headliners Bon Jovi were to use pyrotechnics, something all the bands had been told was strictly off limits – music-wise the Moscow Music Peace Festival was a triumph.

Against all the egotistical odds, each band finally took to the stage and played six songs. Skid Row stormed through a set that featured The Sex Pistols’ Holidays In The Sun , Ozzy Osbourne mixed his own solo material ( Shot In The Dark and Suicide Solution ) with a couple of Black Sabbath classics ( Sweet Leaf, Paranoid ) to a huge response.

Cinderella were at the height of their powers – turning in a set that included high-voltage versions of Falling Apart At The Seams and Coming Home , while Mötley Crüe channelled their anger into a ball of punkish energy with a ferocious set that featured Girls Girls Girls and Wild Side .

The Scorpions were given a huge reception – they were arguably the most popular band on the bill back then – and Gorky Park held their own.

Topping it off, Jon Bon Jovi showed his prowess for courting popularity with the locals by wearing a Russian army coat and hat as the band tore through a show that included Blood On Blood, Wanted Dead Or Alive and Lay Your Hands On Me . Both nights finished in a memorable jam session; members of all the bands joined by drummer Jason Bonham took on Elvis’s Hound Dog (first night), Little Richard’s Long Tall Sally (second night) and Led Zeppelin’s Rock And Roll (both nights).

10 Best Ozzy Osbourne Movie And TV Appearances

All hail the Prince of Darkness.

Ozzy Osbourne War Pigs WWE

Ozzy Osbourne’s place in music history has been solidified, as he and Black Sabbath are often credited as the first heavy metal band. Releasing 19 studio albums over five decades, the Prince of Darkness has won two Grammys (plus a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award), influenced countless of the most well-known bands in the genre and, you know, bit the head off of a bat. His eccentric personality and wild look made him the perfect choice for several great TV and movie appearances over the years, and here are 10 of the best.

While the Black Sabbath frontman has been known to portray characters — lending his voice to several animated projects — Ozzy Osbourne is a character in and of himself, and many of his best offerings feature the Godfather of Metal just being Ozzy.

Ozzy Osbourne in Little Nicky.

Little Nicky (2000)

Adam Sandler boasts a pretty impressive catalog of projects that span multiple genres, but the 2000 action comedy Little Nicky is not considered one of his greatest. It still has developed a cult following over the years for its ridiculously devilish story and bevy of celebrity cameos. One of the famous faces to make an appearance is Ozzy Osbourne, who Nicky summons after his brother Adrian (Rhys Ifans) transforms into a bat. You can imagine where things go from there.

Rent or buy Little Nicky on Amazon Prime Video.

The Osbournes

The Osbournes (2002)

Years before the Kardashian-Jenner bunch became the royal family of reality TV, America fell in love with The Osbournes . The MTV series captured what it was like to live with Ozzy Osbourne, his wife Sharon and two younger children, Jack and Kelly. The show lasted for four seasons and made household names of all of them, but more importantly it gave us a different perspective on the Prince of Darkness. It was hilarious to see Ozzy bumbling around helplessly, calling out for, “Sharon!”

The Osbournes is not available to stream or buy, but you can stream their 2020 series The Osbournes Want to Believe on Max.

Ozzy Osbourne and family in Austin Powers In Goldmember

Austin Powers In Goldmember (2002)

Mike Myers got in on The Osbournes ’ craze back in the early aughts in the third movie of his shagadelic trilogy, Austin Powers in Goldmember . Repeating a bit from the 1999 sequel that involved a phallic-shaped rocket, Goldmember features Dr. Evil shooting down a satellite shaped like a pair of breasts. An amusing montage of double entendres ensues, eventually cutting to Ozzy shouting, “Boobs!” He then explains to his family members sitting next to him that the Austin Powers filmmakers are boobs because they already used that joke in The Spy Who Shagged Me .

Howard Stern in Private Parks.

Private Parts (1997)

Howard Stern’s autobiographical film Private Parts featured a number of celebrity cameos, and while Ozzy Osbourne only uttered a single sentence in the film — “What a fucking jerk.” — it remains one of the 1997 flick's most quoted lines.

Ozzy Osbourne's character in Trolls World Tour.

Trolls World Tour (2020)

The sequel to the DreamWorks animated hit Trolls highlighted a number of different genres of music, and that means there were some big names in the Trolls World Tour voice cast , including Mary J. Blige, J Balvin, Kelly Clarkson , George Clinton and, of course, Ozzy Osbourne. The Black Sabbath frontman voiced King Thrash, the retired king of hard rock, with the effects of his wild rock star lifestyle made evident through Osbourne’s signature nonsensical mumbling and his use of a motorized wheelchair, aka his mobile throne.

Ozzy Osbourne on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2013)

Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath premiered the second single off their reunion album 13 during an episode of CSI : Crime Scene Investigation . In the Season 13 episode “Skin in the Game,” Ted Danson ’s D.B. Russell and Marc Vann’s Conrad Ecklie attend a Black Sabbath concert while investigating a string of murders. On stage the band sings “End of the Beginning,” before the singer sits down with one of the suspects for an interview. The interviewer mentions that they’ve spoken before, back in 1986, to which Ozzy hilariously replies that he doesn’t remember — not just the conversation, either, but the entirety of 1986.

Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne on WWE Raw

WWE Raw (2009)

Ozzy Osbourne has made a few stops in the world of professional wrestling, even becoming a celebrity inductee to the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021. He’s also one of several celebrities who have appeared in WrestleMania — managing the British Bulldogs as they secured the World Tag Team Championships at the 1986 pay-per-view event. In November 2009, he and wife Sharon Osbourne served as guest hosts on WWE Raw , where they did a spin on Sharon’s gig as a judge on America’s Got Talent and turned the ring into a judges’ table for “Raw’s Got Talent.”

Stream WWE Raw on Peacock.

Ozzy Osbourne in Trick or Treat.

Trick Or Treat (1986)

Talk about playing off-type! Ozzy Osbourne may be known for portraying himself in many of his TV and movie appearances, but the 1986 comedy horror Trick or Treat brilliantly cast the Prince of Darkness in a role nobody would expect — a TV evangelist. It’s hilarious to watch the Rev. Aaron Gilstrom clutch his proverbial pearls at suggestive song lyrics and proclaim that the rock stars “have to be stopped!”

Stream Trick or Treat on Screambox.

Gnomeo & Juliet

Gnomeo & Juliet (2011)

Two things you may not think about when it comes to the Godfather of Metal are animated deer and Shakespeare, however, those worlds collided in Gnomeo & Juliet , the animated reimagining of Romeo & Juliet . Ozzy Osbourne voices Fawn, the miniature deer statue and best friend of Tybalt.

Ozzy Osbourne in The Jerky Boys movie.

The Jerky Boys: The Movie (1995)

Johnny Brennan and Kamal Ahmed came to fame in the 1990s as the Jerky Boys comedy duo, who developed a following for making prank phone calls. After a couple of comedy albums, the duo made a movie, appropriately titled The Jerky Boys: The Movie . Ozzy Osbourne makes an appearance as the manager for the band Helmet. Johnny and Kamal convince the manager that they’ve replaced two roadies who left to go on tour with The Monkees. Say what you will about the movie overall, but Ozzy’s utter disbelief that he got shunned for “the fuckin’ Monkees?!” is pretty funny.

Rent or buy The Jerky Boys: The Movie on Amazon Prime Video.

Whether you prefer Ozzy Osbourne behind the microphone or in front of the camera, there’s no denying that the Prince of Darkness can entertain, as he’s been doing so for half a century now.

Cher, Jimmy Buffett, Mary J. Blige

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has revealed the names of 16 artists or other musical figures who will be inducted in 2024. It’s a diverse list that stretches from R&B/rock pioneer Big Mama Thornton to pop superstars Cher and Dionne Warwick, and from ’70s-rooted rockers like Peter Frampton, Foreigner and Ozzy Osbourne to ’90s icons the Dave Matthews Band , Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.

Popular on Variety

For the first time, the inductees were announced as part of an “American Idol” broadcast, during a Sunday night episode themed around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Following is the complete list of inductees for 2024:

Performer Category:

  • Mary J. Blige
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Peter Frampton
  • Kool & The Gang
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • A Tribe Called Quest

Musical Influence Award:

  • Alexis Korner
  • John Mayall
  • Big Mama Thornton

Musical Excellence Award:

  • Jimmy Buffett
  • Dionne Warwick
  • Norman Whitfield

Ahmet Ertegun Award :

  • Suzanne de Passe

The eight “performer” inductees are the ones selected by a ballot sent out to the Hall’s voters after the 15 nominees were announced on Feb. 10.

That leaves seven nominees from this year who will have to wait for another crack at getting in: Mariah Carey, Jane’s Addiction, Sade, Sinead O’Connor, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz and the duo Eric B. and Rakim.

One question mark now is how Cher will react to her induction. Just last December, in an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” she said, “You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.” At that point, though, she had never received so much as a nomination, so the odds favor her changing her tune on that vow, now that she got voted in her first time actually appearing on the ballot.

Five out of the eight voted in this year were first-time nominees: Osbourne, Cher, Frampton, Foreigner and Kool & the Gang.

A Tribe Called Quest got in on the hip-hop collective’s third time on the ballot (and their third year in a row being nominated). Blige and Matthews both got in on their second try (she was previously up for it in 2021; DMB had a prior nod in 2020).

Frampton, for his part, beyond the merits of having had one of the biggest albums of all time, may be a sentimental favorite this year, due to his being in the acknowledged twilight of his musical career. He has been out on a farewell tour off and on since 2019, following his diagnosis with the debilitating disease inclusion body myositis in 2015. The rocker just wrapped up the last round of dates he had scheduled, although he has not said there won’t be more.

Osbourne becomes a second-time inductee this year; his group Black Sabbath was voted in all the way back in 2006. Sometimes there is contention over whether singers who are already in the Hall of Fame, as group members, really need to be pushed to the front of the line as solo artists, too, ahead of other contenders. In any case, voters decided that Osbourne’s post-Sabbath career established him as one of rock’s major icons, even apart from his initial round of influence and success as a frontman.

De Passe is getting her flowers for a career that included a long stint as one of the major players at Motown, developing the Jackson 5 into superstars and signing the Commodores, among other triumphs, before becoming a film and TV executive. She was profiled by Variety about her long and wide-ranging career in 2022.

Motown is also being celebrated with the induction of Whitfield, a songwriter and producer whose astonishing catalog of hits in the ’60s and ’70s included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Just My Imagination,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “War,” “Ball of Confusion,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Car Wash.” He died in 2008.

Coming on under the “musical influences” umbrella, Alexis Korner may be the name among this year’s inductees that is least known to contemporary music fans. He was a major player in the British blues scene of the 1960s and became a popular broadcaster as well; he died in 1984 at age 55. With John Mayall also being selected by the committee for the same honor, it’s an unexpected banner year for British blues-rockers.

JSA STAGE COMPANY

STAGING & PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

ABOUT JSA EUROPE / STAGE COMPANY

JSA Europe is the successor of the JSA Stage Company, which was founded by Alexander Strizhak in 1996 in Moscow . It was the first professional stage company in Russia that greatly influenced the development of production management and staging in Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic countries. The new JSA company is based on the legal status of the representative office of the JSA Stage Company in Europe – Latvia, Riga, which was opened in 2003. In the beginning, it was the headquarters for communication with European and in particular with the Baltic sector of live music and events. The company started active operations in the local market in 2007.

In early 2017, JSA Europe restarted its activities after a break due to the long reorganization of the parent company after the closure of business in the Russian Federation for political reasons in the spring of 2014.

The main activity of the company is the provision of professional services by staging and managing the production of live music concerts, festivals, and events.

This is a full range of services – from the development of plans, layouts, drawings, binding to the area, the logistics of production of technical works, testing of communication capabilities, transportation issues, and work with contractors – sound, light, video, scenery, pyrotechnics, electric generators, etc. / installation of stages, tent pavilions, stands, barriers, fencing systems, and other infrastructure facilities.

The service quality is based on more than 25 years of experience of the company , the skills of the experienced staff, and the energy of young employees.

Additionally: The company has extensive experience in Ukraine and cooperation with local contractors. The parent company had a full-fledged branch named JSA Ukraine and an equipment warehouse from 2007 to 2012 in Kyiv.

In 2015, after leaving the Russian Federation, the company started a new activity in Ukraine, participating in projects as a consultant for their production. A team from JSA took part in the production of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 , which was held in Kyiv. Our work part was the VIP Hospitality Zone of this event.

Since the end of 2018, JSA has not been active and has mainly cooperated with ArtMax (Lviv, Ukraine), helping with production aspects and promoting services. And in addition, it was engaged in the sale of stage structures to the local market (Layher and SIXTY82).

During 2019, JSA, in collaboration with its longtime business partner, developed a new interesting business project called FLEXODROM . Unfortunately, due to a two-year lockdown in early 2020, this project and other business activities have been postponed. Despite the forced shutdown, during this period the company could reorganize sales of Layher plant products on the Ukrainian market. At the same time, the company gradually moved all its operations to the head office in Riga (Latvia).

After the full-scale aggression of the Russian Federation in Ukraine began in February 2022, the company lost its sales market and was forced to reconsider its plans and made another business reorganization. Within a year, we were able to create a platform for the resumption of staging, but already offering our service on the territory of the European Union. This includes: concept creation, design and engineering, and staging of temporary stage and other structures (dry hire or along with the installation by the JSA Stagers team). We have a warehouse with equipment from Layher systems (Allround Scaffolding and Event Decks) and large Prolyte Roof Systems.

JSA also continues to provide a service for managing the production processes of technical support, creating infrastructure, logistics and security issues in organizing and holding concerts and events.

Our team is mobile and we have extensive experience in international projects. The staff is polite and always ready to provide the necessary assistance.

Our full production service makes the customer feel confident and comfortable.

WE WILL CONSTRUCT YOUR SHOW!

We are working 24/7.
