2024 Men’s UCI WorldTour Teams: Bikes and Tech Guide

Welcome to the Cyclingnews WorldTour bikes guide for 2024, offering a comprehensive look at the bikes and tech used by the men's UCI WorldTour Teams, highlighting changes, updates, and overall trends for the upcoming cycling season.

In 2024, men's UCI WorldTour Teams are focused on optimizing bikes and equipment for speed and aerodynamics, with a relentless pursuit of the best blend of weight and aero efficiency, setting the stage for incredibly fast average speeds in races. Teams are making notable changes such as Groupama-FDJ's switch from Lapierre to Wilier Triestina and Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team's move to Van Rysel from BMC.

  • Groupama-FDJ switches from Lapierre to Wilier Triestina after a 22-year partnership
  • Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team shifts to Van Rysel bikes, moving away from BMC
  • Bora-Hansgrohe transitions from Shimano to SRAM groupsets
  • Other than a few key changes, most men's WorldTour bike brands have remained the same for 2024
  • Absence of Campagnolo from the WorldTour peloton for 2024 is a notable development
  • Team Jayco-AlUla's equipment package and team name remain largely unchanged

As the 2024 season kicks off, the focus will be on observing the impact of the equipment changes, assessing new partnerships, and tracking advancements in bike technology and racing performance.

The 2024 men's WorldTour season is set to be influenced by key equipment changes, signaling a strategic shift in pursuit of speed and aerodynamics, with potential implications for race outcomes and dynamics.

Look bikes return to UCI World Tour in 2023: How many races will Team Cofidis win aboard this 795 Blade RS?

Look bikes return to UCI World Tour in 2023: How many races will Team Cofidis win aboard this 795 Blade RS?

French UCI World Tour team Cofidis has confirmed that it will be using Look bikes and Corima wheels from the 2023 season onwards in a multi-year deal that sees the team move away from De Rosa.

Unless Look launches new bikes in the New Years, the team's riders will have the choice of the lightweight 785 Huez RS or the 795 Blade RS aero bike. Let's take a closer 'Look' at the latter...

2022 Cofidis TT (SW Pix)

Cofidis has had a busy autumn, with many new signings. The team now has some serious firepower in the form of Ion Izagirre, Bryan Coquard, Guillaume Martin and Davide Cimolai. The 100% French partnership also includes Cofidis' women's and Para-cycling teams.

Cofidis Look 695 - Daniel Navarro 02

This isn't the first time that Cofidis has used Look bikes. The team rode them from 2009 until 2014 before switching to Orbea, and later De Rosa. (Daniel Navarro's 2014 Look 695 can be seen above.)

Even though this is by no means the first time that Look bikes have been in the World Tour peloton, they have been absent for the last few years. It was in fact in 1985 that a Look bicycle took it's first World Tour victory via Greg Lemond at the Tour de France.

Since it was last in the World Tour peloton, the French brand has released plenty of new models, one of them being this range-topping aero bike: the latest 795 Blade RS. We think it's quite the looker!

2022 Look 795 Blade RS Disc Proteam - rear.jpg

Look says this is a bike "all about performance" with a high modulus carbon frame incorporating all of the LOOK know-how, "to offer you optimum stiffness with no compromise on comfort."

Like many of the recent  best aero road bikes , the 795 Blade RS has an integrated cockpit which channels the brake hoses under the stem and through the headset.

> One bike to rule them all: why lightweight aero bikes are now THE essential race weapon

Despite its aero credentials, the frame has a very competitive weight of 1kg, a full 300g lighter than the previous generation. Look says this was made possible by using higher modulus fibres to reduce the tube thickness, and by extension, their weight.

The frame has space for up to 30c tyres and features this unique seat stay design with no bridge to deliver "maximum efficiency" and rear compliance.

Look has used its new EPS (Extended Polystyrene) technology to create the carbon frame, which is apparently more costly than the traditional process and is only used for the brand's highest-performance bike models.

Look explains that rather than having one single mould for each frame size, this method requires two: one for the outer shape of the frame and one for the inner.

The EPS process consists of draping the layer of carbon fibre fabric over a hard polystyrene form, which is then removed. The high-tech moulding process is said to avoid any folds, porosities and areas of weakness in the carbon.

We've already mentioned that Cofidis is no stranger to using Look equipment. As well as previously using them as a bike partner, the team has been using Look pedals since 2010, specifically the Look Keo Blade Ti.

Cédric Vasseur, General Manager of Team Cofidis said: "As the UCI World Tour team, we are more concerned than ever with the level of performance of all the components of our bike and we want to offer the ultimate quality to all of our riders. We are also proud to ride on 100% French high-tech products."

2022 Cofidis De Rosa Corima (SW Pix)

Cofidis, like in 2022, will use Corima wheels (Part of the Look cycling group) and will have the choice between the MCC DX, WS Black DX, and WS TT DX wheelsets. Corima wheels also have a rich history in the World Tour peloton; in fact, they have racked up four  Grand Tours and a road race Olympic title in the last decade.

Two teams will be using Corima wheels in 2023: Cofidis and Astana Premier-tech.

2022 Corima MCC DX carbon wheels

The MCC DX wheels are available in both 32mm and 47mm depths and feature a nearly full carbon fibre construction with this unique 12-spoke pattern both front and rear. Weights start as low as 1,295g, which is sure to help in the mountains.

2022 Look X Cofidis

Federico Musi, CEO of Look and Corima, said: “Look and Team Cofidis are proud to announce a long-term partnership which will allow the riders of the UCI World Tour team to benefit from the full range of LOOK bikes, pedals and CORIMA wheels. We are also particularly excited to contribute to diversifying and expanding the community of riders by supporting the professional women’s team as well as the development of the para-cycling team.

"Promoting ‘Made In France’, French knowhow, and LOOK’s heritage of excellence alongside a team as prestigious and historic as Cofidis is a real honour".

Jamie has been riding bikes since a tender age but really caught the bug for racing and reviewing whilst  studying towards a master's in Mechanical engineering  at Swansea University. Having graduated, he decided he really quite liked working with bikes and is now a full-time addition to the road.cc team. When not writing about tech news or working on the Youtube channel, you can still find him racing local crits trying to cling on to his cat 2 licence...and missing every break going...

The full list of UCI WorldTour and ProTour teams is largely as expected, with a couple of surprises in the mix

The UCI has confirmed the official line-up of WorldTour and ProTour teams for the men’s and women's pelotons , with no changes to the men’s WorldTour, but two teams stepping up to Women’s WorldTour level for 2024.

At the ProTeam level, the promotion of TDT-Unibet is the main talking point, whilst the UCI also confirmed which ProTeams and women’s Continental squads will receive automatic WorldTour race invites next season.

The most notable changes come in the Women’s WorldTour line-up, with this year marking a promotion and demotion year in the women’s peloton. However, due to the closure of the EF Education-TIBCO-SVB team and the merger between Jayco-AlUla and Liv Racing TeqFind, there was in fact no demotion, with top-ranked Continental teams AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step and Ceratizit-WNT being awarded the two free WorldTour licences.

Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi also applied for a spot in the WorldTour but missed out due to their lower ranking compared to AG Insurance and Ceratizit-WNT.

Additionally, Tashkent City Cycling Team , a Continental team from Uzbekistan, has earned invitations to all the Women’s WorldTour races in 2024 as the second-best ranked Continental squad, outside of those being promoted. For reference, the other team receiving an invitation to all the WorldTour races is Cofidis , a team that earned 1,975 UCI points. Tashkent City, conversely, earned 1,703 points, with most coming away from European racing.

Absent from the Women’s WorldTour will be the new EF Education-Cannondale team, who were unable to take over the licence from the outgoing EF Education-TIBCO-SVB squad and, as a new team, were not in contention for one of the promotion spots.

On the men's side, the only real change comes in the form of the loss of the Australian ProTeam Bolton Equities Black Spoke and the American ProTeam Human Powered Health. Only one team will be replacing the two outgoing squads, with the TDT-Unibet squad ascending to the ProTour level.

Read more: TDT-Unibet exclusive interview

The 18 WorldTour teams remain the same, with the men’s current promotion/relegation cycle ending at the end of 2025, where licences will change hands based on rankings.

As expected, Israel-Premier Tech and Lotto Dstny will have automatic wild-card invitations to all the WorldTour races in 2024 as the two highest-performing ProTeams in 2023, while Uno-X Mobility , as they will be known in 2024, will receive invitations to all the one-day races on the WorldTour.

WorldTour team bike guide 2020

Who's riding what in the WorldTour? Now with the addition of the peloton's indoor cycling setups

WorldTour Bikes

Welcome to the Cyclingnews round-up of the 2020 men's WorldTour teams and the tech they are using this season.

The growth of the WorldTour from 18 to 19 teams saw space for even more bike tech to feature. We saw all the new tech at the Tour Down Under in January, as well as a glimpse into the Classics tech at Opening Weekend before racing was halted due to the coronavirus, and while racing is on hold for the time being, teams are taking to indoor cycling tech in order to keep up fitness and exposure.

Below, we'll provide details of the changes seen as 2019 became 2020, and we'll give an overview of the cycling tech that each team is using, including their riders' indoor cycling 'pain caves'.

WorldTour bikes 2021

Every year, due to contracts coming to an end and new sponsors coming in to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the WorldTour stage, professional cycling teams and their sponsors frequently part ways and form new partnerships.

It's sometimes hard to keep track of who's now sponsored by who, and which equipment cycling teams are using.

For some, these partnerships are organised well in advance, but in other cases, teams face a last-gasp scramble to attract sponsorship in order to survive, let alone kit out their riders for the season ahead.

It's not uncommon to see a carousel of change as teams and suppliers find new opportunities and form agreements elsewhere. For example, ahead of the 2019 season, three big bike brands enjoyed a merry-go-round of team sponsorship changes. BMC Racing morphed into CCC Team and switched from  BMC bikes to Giant . Team Sunweb, in turn, switched out their Giant bikes for Cervélo , leaving  Dimension Data to ride aboard BMC  to complete the triangle.

2020 WorldTour sponsorship changes

With the news that Endura had ceased sponsorship of Movistar , a void was left in the Spanish outfit's clothing department, ahead of the news that Italian company Alé would supply the team with kit from 2020 onwards. Movistar continue to ride aboard Canyon bikes for a sixth year, although their use of Campagnolo groupsets ceased for the first time in 37 years, with SRAM providing the team with a disc-only fleet for the 2020 season.

The much-documented merge between Katusha and Israel Cycling Academy saw Canyon step away, dropping its total of sponsored WorldTour teams to just one. Alongside its focus on the Alpecin-Fenix ProTeam outfit of Mathieu van der Poel and its title sponsorship of the Canyon-SRAM women's team, it also followed Nairo Quintana in his move from Movistar to the Arkéa–Samsic ProTeam.

The newly structured Israel Start-Up Nation – home to both André Greipel and Dan Martin – are aboard Factor Bikes . The British bike brand's agreement with AG2R La Mondiale came to a close at the end of the 2018 season, commencing a 12-month hiatus from the WorldTour as it switched focus to supplying bikes to the Pro Continental outfit Roompot-Charles along with women's UCI team Parkhotel Valkenburg .  Roompot-Charles folding at the end of the 2019 season freed up the Norfolk-based company to step back up to the WorldTour.

Following the surprising decision by Team Ineos to use Lightweight wheels at the Tour de France , it was perhaps a surprise to see no equipment changes there ahead of the 2020 season. Egan Bernal 's Tour de France win is clearly good for the sponsors' return on investment, and Team Ineos have continue aboard Pinarello bikes this season, with Shimano providing the groupsets and wheels.

That said, during the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire , a number of Team Ineos riders were seen using new wheels from a company called Princeton CarbonWorks , whose wheels are distinctive by their sinusoidal (wavy) rim profile. It seems Ineos have struck a deal to use these wheels in time trials for the 2020 season.

A team that made big changes was Bahrain McLaren . Mark Cavendish 's new team switched out their Fulcrum wheels in favour of Vision, and moved away from Sportful clothing in favour of former pro Yanto Barker 's brand, Le Col.

Astana 's three-year deal with Argon 18 finished at the end of the 2019 season, and was not renewed , so for 2020, while the Kazakh team will continue using Corima wheels, Wilier now provides the framesets .

Finally, with Cofidis stepping up to the WorldTour , and their original two-year deal with Kuota expiring at the end of 2019, the change in tier led to a change in bike sponsor. De Rosa, who previously supplied Israel Cycling Academy, made like their former team by climbing up to the WorldTour, but in Cofidis colours for 2020.

Indoor cycling tech

With racing on pause for 2020, WorldTour riders have fast adapted to the world of indoor cycling.

Alpecin-Fenix organised the Ronde van Zwift , in which the team took on dedicated eRacing teams such as Canyon ZCC and Kalas. Mitchelton-Scott have been running organised Zwift rides , and with the cancellation of the Tour of Flanders , there was even a Lockdown Edition run on Rouvy, won by CCC Team 's Greg Van Avermaet .

Sponsors have invested heavily in kitting their riders out with the best turbo trainers to ensure their riders can not only train, but also utilise their form to race on platforms such as Zwift and Rouvy . Cyclingnews recently had a bit of fun by rating the peloton's pain caves .

Scroll down for the full round-up of who's on what for 2020.

New bike tech in 2020

When it comes to new bike launches, 2019 was the year of conformity, with a range of manufacturers all seeming to converge on particular design features for their lightweight climbing bike offerings.

While the BMC Teammachine and Specialized Tarmac were early adopters of the dropped seat stay and aerodynamic carbon tubing, 2019 saw similar silhouettes launched by a number of other brands, with the Cannondale SuperSix EVO , Focus Izalco Max, Orbea Orca, Scott Addict RC and Wilier 0 SLR all coming to similar conclusions after wind-tunnel testing.

For 2020, it looks as though Giant has stuck to its guns, though. The new Giant TCR looks to be more evolution than revolution.

In keeping with its traditional three-year product cycle, we're expecting the Specialized Tarmac will receive a refresh for 2020, too, although at this stage the team at Specialized remain tight-lipped. The Trek Emonda also hasn't seen wholesale change since 2018, so we're expecting the American giant to retain its hyper-lightweight frame design, but with a keener eye on aerodynamics.

Talking of aerodynamics, rumours are rife of a new Canyon Aeroad after Mathieu van der Poel was seen riding an as-yet-unreleased Aeroad at the Primus Classic and Gooikse Pijl . Details are currently sparse, but we'll be sure to bring you more as they become available.

Giro d'Italia 2024: How to Watch a UCI World Tour Cycling Livestream for Free

It's the first Grand Tour of the 2024 season.

uci world tour bikes

The battle for the maglia rosa begins this weekend, as the world's best riders take on the 107th edition of the Giro d'Italia.

The first of the three Grand Tours in 2024, this year's event sees two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar make his debut in the race for UAE Team Emirates.

The Slovenian star is marked out as favorite to win with the bookies, with strong competition set to come from last year's runner-up Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) over the course of the 21-stage event.

Below, we'll outline the best  live TV streaming services  to use to watch the Giro d'Italia live wherever you are in the world.

The peloton passing through a vineyards during the 2023 Giro d'Italia.

Giro d'Italia 2024: Where and when is it?

The 2024 Giro d'Italia begins with Stage 1 in Torino on Saturday, May 4, and climaxes with a passage through Rome on Sunday, May 26.

A full schedule for this year's event can be found further down.

How to watch the Giro d'Italia 2024 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the race locally, you may need a different way to watch -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic, and it's also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to what you want to watch. If your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our  Editors' Choice, ExpressVPN , make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you're streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Looking for other options? Be sure to check out some of the other great  VPN deals  taking place right now.

Quick tips for streaming Giro d'Italia 2024 using a VPN

  • With four variables at play -- your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN -- your experience and success when streaming the 2024 Giro d'Italia live may vary.
  • If you don't see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the "search for city or country" option.
  • If you're having trouble after you've turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend  Brave .

Stage 4: Acqui Terme - Andora, 190 km

Jonathan milan wins sprint finish.

Stage Winner: Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek)

Race Leader: Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

May 7, 2024—For the second straight day, the Giro d’Italia ended with a flat sprint that was almost nabbed with a daring and unexpected last-minute attack.

The 190-kilometer route from Acqui Terme to Andora started with a gradual ride into the day’s only categorized climb, the category 3 Colle del Melogno, where the KOM points were taken by Intermarché-Wanty’s Lilian Calmejane. After that, it was an almost wholly downsloping back half of the stage, ending with a straight, flat shot into the seaside town of Andora.

107th giro d'italia 2024 stage 4

If the peloton felt a bit jumpy heading into Andora, it no doubt had to do with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Geraint Thomas’s (INEOS Grenadiers) almost successful late break in yesterday’s sprint stage.

And then, just like yesterday, a solo attack was launched with plenty of racing left. Today, it was Ineos-Grenadiers’ Filippo Ganna, one of the fastest solo bike racers that’s ever lived, who attacked at the foot of the day’s final pitch, the Capo Mele, with 4 km to go. However, the long-distance attack was once again in vain, as he was caught and swallowed up with just a few hundred meters to go.

107th giro d'italia 2024 stage 4

Moments later, another Italian, Lidl-Trek’s Jonathan Milan, launched a furious and commanding 300-meter sprint that would net him his second Giro stage win, exactly one year to the day from his first.

Meanwhile, Dani Martínez, who entered the day in third place in the GC standings, suffered a late-stage mechanical. Lucky for the BORA-hansgrohe racer, it was within the final 3 kilometers, meaning he was awarded the same time as the bunch ahead and lost no extra time to Pogačar and Thomas.

In sad news, Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) slid out on a slick descent with about 62 kilometers left, crashing out of the race with an injury. It was a brutal reminder of the Eritrean’s luck, who, moments after becoming the first Black African rider to win a Grand Tour stage in 2022’s Giro, suffered a freak injury when the cork from his celebratory champagne bottle shot him in the eye, causing him to abandon the race with a hemorrhage in his eye.

“We saw Ganna going full gas in the last climb, and we just had to catch him,” said Milan of his Italian track teammate. “Today, the guys did such an amazing job. This experience was special because my parents were here today. I’m really happy about it,” Milan, who won last year’s maglia ciclamino, added.

After the race, second-place finisher Kaden Groves said the day’s blisteringly high speeds made the stage “quite scary at times.” And when asked about how his Alpecin-Deceuninck team was shaping up over the Giro’s first week, Groves said, “We’re getting there.”

Soudal Quick-Step’s Tim Merlier Takes Sprint Victory Amidst GC Favorites’ Late Attack

Stage Winner: Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step)

May 6, 2024 – The sprinters had their first chance to shine, as the race’s third stage from Novara to Fassano featured just 750 meters of elevation over 166 kilometers.

cycling ita giro podium

However, it wasn’t without a bit of drama, as the race’s biggest GC favorites launched a thrilling attack over the last four kilometers, throwing a wrench into what was expected to be a straightforward day. After an early move from EF-Education EasyPost’s Mikkel Honore, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) followed, forming a small, three-man breakaway that, for a moment, looked as though it might stay away from the group.

107th giro d'italia 2024 stage 3

Honoré was swallowed up by the group with about 1 kilometer to go, and given the day’s high pace and series of breakaways, there was some thought that Pogačar and Thomas’s attack might just stick. However, the two GC men were caught with about 400 meters to go, setting up the bunch sprint everyone expected the day to end with.

Soudal Quick-Step’s Tim Merlier nipped a group at the line that included Lidl-Trek’s Jonathan Milan and Intermarche Wanty’s Biniam Girmay, who rounded out the day’s podium, along with Arkea’s Jenthe Biermans and dsm-Firmeninch PostNL’s Tobias Lund Andersen.

After a masterful recovery from a late crash to win Sunday’s second stage, Pogačar started the day in the maglia rosa , forty-five seconds clear of Dani Martínez of BORA-hansgrohe and Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers. By the time stage 3 was over, those standings remained exactly the same.

“It wasn’t the plan,” Thomas said of the two-man attack over the closing kilometers. “We just wanted to stay out of trouble.”

He added that, over the final few hundred meters, it took everything he had to keep contact with Pogačar. “I was just trying to hold his wheel,” Thomas said, admitting that the attack was never part of the day’s plan.

“It was the hardest victory so far,” stage winner Merlier said of the unexpected chase he and his group of sprinters found themselves in as Thomas and Pogačar rode away. Merlier said he hesitated, causing him to miss out on his leadout man, and eventually forcing him to attack directly into the wind without any support.

Tadej Pogačar Wins Stage 2 and Takes the Maglia Rosa

Stage Winner: Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)

May 5, 2024 - Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates wins Stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia 2024 and takes the Maglia Rosa. Twenty-seven seconds behind, Dani Martínez (Bora-hansgrohe) takes second, and Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) is third.

It was a masterful performance by UAE Team Emirates once Pogačar made it back to the front of the peloton after a small crash due to a front flat tire. The Slovenian leads Thomas and Martinez by 45" in the General Classification.

107th giro d'italia 2024 stage 2

In the post-race interview, Pogačar was asked if he panicked after crashing in the lead-up to the last climb. “Not really. I was quite calm. I hit a hole in the city and had a super fast flat tire. There was a bit of confusion. I wanted to stop before the corner, but the DS said, ‘No, no, after the corner.’ I was feeling good. The team was super good today. And then we set the pace that we like and it was perfect,” said the race leader.

“I didn’t know the climb well. Everybody was maybe doing this climb for the first time, and it was hard to guess where to do the [hard] pacing, but I think we did a really good job today. And it was super good the last pull of Rafał Majka in the hard part so that I could attack,” Pogačar added.

“I just wanted a stage win today and some gap. Test the legs a little bit. And the [goal] was to take the pink jersey. Now I can relax a little bit in the next few days with the team and we stay safe in the sprints.”

Geraint Thomas of INEOS Grenadiers found himself meeting his limit in today’s stage. “It was so hard to follow, but I knew if I tried to keep going I would completely blow up. I felt bad for sitting on Ben [O’Connor], but I was on the limit for a while there,” said Thomas in the post-race interview.

Regarding Pogačar’s crash, Thomas said, “Honestly, I didn’t know until I was on the climb, and someone said Tadej was back. The plan was to go to the front, not to attack, but to stay safe on the front.”

Narváez Upstages Pogačar to Secure Stage 1 Victory and Maglia Rosa

Stage Winner: Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers)

Race Leader: Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers)

107th giro d'italia 2024 stage 1

May 4, 2024 - The opening stage of the Giro d’Italia produced plenty of fireworks and a surprise winner on the line. Team UAE Emirates set it up perfectly for Tadej Pogačar on the opening stage. After some long-lasting breakaways were caught, Pogačar broke free in the last four kilometers with Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers) and Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe). The Slovenian just couldn’t gap those two rivals, and it set it up for a sprint finish. In a bit of a surprise, it was Narváez, the 27-year-old Ecuadorian national champion, outsprinting Schachmann (second on the stage) and Pogačar (third). Narváez earns the first Maglia Rosa of the 2024 Tour of Italy.

Though he didn’t win the stage, Pogačar will head into Stage 2 with an advantage over many of his top GC rivals. Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) was 10 seconds behind Pogačar on the stage and, after factoring in time bonuses, 14 seconds behind Pogačar in the GC standings.

“It was a great feeling. We knew it was going to be a stage for me, and I worked a lot on it,” Narváez said in the post-race interview. “Following the best guy in the world on the climb was really hard, so it’s a special victory today. It’s still hurting me now. It was really hard—really, really hard. But in the end, I made it.”

“I think [Pogačar] went too long in the sprint, 200 meters after a really hard stage, and I did a short sprint, and in the end, I took the victory. For me, it’s amazing. There aren’t many opportunities in a Grand Tour to get the maglia rosa on the first day because you have a bunch sprint, a TT, or a different stage. Today was a good opportunity. I worked really, really hard for it,” added Narváez.
