Introduction
Whether you’re travelling by Eurotunnel , Eurostar, coach, ferry or plane, there are plenty of options to make getting here as easy as possible.
Getting to Britain by air
Flying to Britain is easy. London Heathrow is the largest airport and is very well connected to central London. The capital is also home to Gatwick , Stansted and City airports.
Other major international airports include Manchester , Liverpool and Newcastle in the North of England, Birmingham in the Midlands and Bristol in the South West. Scotland is served by both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports. Cardiff Airport provides international connections for Wales, while Northern Ireland is served by Belfast.
All British airports are well connected with local public transport. The Heathrow Express provides a fast, direct train into London Paddington station, while the airport is also connected to the London Underground network. Gatwick , Stansted and Manchester have regular express train connections, while Edinburgh has a tram link to the city centre. Shop for Heathrow Express tickets and Stansted Express tickets here.
Getting Britain by train/Eurostar
You can cross from continental Europe to Britain directly by train. The Channel Tunnel links Britain to the European continent via Eurostar trains (which take passengers) and Eurotunnel trains (which take passengers in their cars) providing a greener alternative to flying. Eurostar trains link Paris, Lille and Calais in France; Brussels in Belgium; and Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands directly via the Channel Tunnel with London and South East England.
Getting from Paris to London
Frequent Eurostar services operate from around 6.45am-9.15pm between Paris and London every day of the week, taking around 2 hours 20 minutes.
The Paris-London train arrives at London’s St Pancras International station, home to world-class shopping, top restaurants and bars.
Getting from Amsterdam, Brussels, Calais, Lille, and Rotterdam to London
Services also run between these destinations and London every day of the week.
Services from Amsterdam to London take just 4 hours 10 minutes.
Services from Brussels to London take just 2 hours.
See the full Eurostar timetables .
Once in Britain, the rail network here covers the whole country, serving more than 2,500 stations. From London, it’s possible to be in Scotland in just four hours, and in Wales in around two hours.
Getting to Britain by car
A network of car and passenger ferry services conveniently link several ports around the UK with northern and southern Europe. Key international UK ferry ports include: Felixstowe, Harwich, Folkestone, Dover, Southampton, and Bristol in south England; Hull and Liverpool in north England; Edinburgh in Scotland, and Belfast in Northern Ireland.
Fares vary according to the season, time of travel and duration of stay so it’s worth checking before you book. Crossing times also vary, from just over an hour on the shortest routes to 24 hours on services from places like Spain and Scandinavia.
Eurotunnel trains connect Calais in France with Folkestone in just 35 minutes. Unlike ferry services, all passengers remain in their vehicles for the duration of the journey, meaning the Eurotunnel can be a better option for less able-bodied passengers.
Travelling to Britain by coach
Using coach or bus services is a cheap but often time-consuming way of travelling to the UK. Many services offer regular routes that cross the English Channel from the European continent. You could choose to terminate your journey in London or other major cities in the UK.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
London Tube ticket from the 80s drives home just how much fares have risen
Share this with
An old London travel card reveals how much the cost of Tube travel has increased over the years.
London would not be the same without the underground.
Whether you love it or hate it, the Tube has been a fundamental part of life in the capital since it opened more than 160 years ago.
Ticket price increases on the Transport of London network are also a regular occurrence – although fares were frozen again this year.
A Londoner discovered a 1988 London Underground travel card when going through their parents’ old books, sharing the rare find online on Reddit.
It shows how much prices have ballooned since.
Back then, an off-peak travel card across zones 1 to 3 for one day cost £2, MyLondon reports.
Because of inflation, that equals £5.36 today.
Today, hopping on the Tube for one day of travel between zones 1-6 will set you back by £15.90.
The discovery sparked nostalgic memories on Reddit, with one user saying ‘that’s a blast from the past. People selling cards at stations! I remember doing it too.’
Another said: ‘Wow, talk about nostalgia! Back then I was riding the tube in to University every day.’

Travel cards were introduced on the London Underground and buses in 1983, while day tickets were launched the following year, according to MyLondon .
The graphic below reveals how much Tube prices have increased for one-day travel cards in zones 1 to 4.
Londoners let out a sigh of relief in 2016, when TfL announced a ticket price freeze.
Passenger fares were frozen between 2017 and 2020, preventing a rise of 12%, the BBC reported.
The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced another fare freeze in January until March 2025 ahead of the mayoral race .
It comes after the transport authority announced an average rise of 5.9% last year.
The average pay-as-you-go Tube fare went up by 30p, while the fare for a single bus journey increased by 10p, according to the broadcaster.
A spokesperson for the Mayor said Khan pledged to freeze TfL fares until at least 2025 to ‘support Londoners with the cost of living crisis.’
‘This is the fifth time Sadiq has frozen fares as he continues to build a greener and fairer London for everyone,’ they added.
Overall consumer prices in Britain have increased by around 236% since the ticket was issued.
The Tube has been modernised since it opened, including the addition of the Elizabeth Line , a better phone signal and an off-peak Friday price trial announced by City Hall.
Passengers are set to get mobile signal within most of London underground by the end of this year – to the delight of those who rack up hours of travel on the Tube each month.
Stretching 249 miles, the underground network has hundreds of secret passages, historical Grade II-listed stations and even ghost platforms.
If you ever feel you are being watched when catching the Tube, it could be because some of the passages have metal grates with views of unassuming passengers.
Travel influencer Dan Thomas revealed a tour of the historic passages.
It could also be because there are more than 15,500 CCTV cameras in the London Underground.

A TfL spokesperson told Metro.co.uk if it plans to extend the off-peak Fridays trial: ‘We continue to analyse the impact of our trial of off-peak pay as you go fares on Tube and rail services on a Friday, which remains ongoing until May 31.
‘This analysis will take into account a number of aspects including assessing changes to both morning peak ridership and overall daily ridership, as well as the impact to businesses across London.’
The London Underground
Here is everything you need to know if you ever find yourself in a Tube-themed pub quiz.
The underground was affectionately nicknamed Tube after the shape of its tunnels.
The Tube opened in 1863, and since then the passenger numbers have increased to a whopping 1.35 billion each year.
Today, it boasts 11 lines with 272 stations stretching across the capital and beyond Greater London.
The furthest Underground station from central London is Chesham in Buckinghamshire located in zone 9.
It stretches for 249 miles.
The busiest station is Waterloo with 100.3 million passengers annually, according to TfL.
Waterloo is also the station with most escalators – 23 in total.
While the average train speed across the Tube is around 20 mph, the Metropolitan Line can reach speeds of up to 62 mph.

Seen the show? Now visit the location: Britain embraces surge in ‘set-jetter’ tourists
International visitors are pouring in to see where Wonka walked and Herriot practised
Set-jetting – flying off to see where a favourite movie was filmed – has long been a small but important tourism niche.
But while feature films such as Wonka and Napoleon are boosting visitor numbers in Bath and Blenheim, the growth of TV streaming is also fuelling a rise in screen tourism that is expected to transform the pastime into big business next year.
The Crown , All Creatures Great and Small , Ted Lasso and Slow Horses have all had fans visiting the starring locations, while there is anticipation about where Warner Bros will choose to shoot a new TV adaptation of the Harry Potter novels.
And Masters of the Air , a follow-up to Band of Brothers by Steven Spielberg’s production company, is likely to have people flocking to east Anglia and other parts of the home counties when it airs in January.
Visit Britain has teamed up with the British Film Commission to launch Starring Great Britain in the new year, and will be working with studios and production companies to promote films, TV series and their locations.
Adrian Wootton, the chief executive of the British Film Commission, said: “Rather than simply attracting people to seek a ‘chocolate box Britain’ experience, it’s the very widest range of genres that’s attracting people to visit our locations.”
While House of the Dragon , Outlander and the Bond films are strong draws, the shows which “don’t necessarily depict locations in a ‘positive’ way – take Broadchurch , Peaky Blinders , Slow Horses – are driving people to visit where they were shot,” he added.
Around half of general international visitors remain in London during the stay, and most of the rest follow a tourist trail to Cambridge, then Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, York and Edinburgh. Screen tourism can help persuade visitors than there is more to Britain than London, Oxbridge and Shakespeare.
VisitBritain said that 34% of international visitors say they want to visit locations from their favourite film and TV shows. Patricia Yates, VisitBritain’s chief executive, said: “By shining the spotlight on film- and TV-inspired experiences you can only have in Britain, we’re encouraging visitors to come and discover more of our amazing destinations, putting themselves in the picture.”
Seren Welch, a screen tourism consultant who has been working with UKinbound, the trade association for UK tourism, said the UK benefited from the sheer volume of production.
“Places like the Royal Naval College in London – it easily boasts over 150 feature films by now. The slow burn of a TV series is very effective, though. Call The Midwife now has a permanent tour at Chatham historic dockyards.
“Quite often, the streamers are keen to tell the narrative behind the locations as well, especially Netflix. There was a spike in bookings within 48 hours of Emily in Paris being released. People are watching and scrolling and booking.”
Set-jetting has a surprisingly long pedigree. Thomas Coryate, the 17th-century English writer who walked to India, asked the Mughal emperor Jahangir for safe passage to Samarkand to visit the tomb of Timur. Coryate’s request was almost certainly inspired by Christopher Marlowe’s play Tamburlaine the Great , which dominated Elizabethan London’s emerging theatre scene.
Nowadays, screen tourism is rather quicker. “We had a girl recently – she came from China, specifically to see Grassington,” said Linda Furniss, owner of the Stripey Badger bookshop in the north Yorkshire village. “She was on her own as well – she flew in, she stayed one night and flew back. That is the extreme extent of the popularity of All Creatures Great and Small .”
after newsletter promotion
Grassington has always been “a magnet for visitors”, said Furniss, who is one of the local business owners who works with Channel 5 and the show’s producers. They transformed the village’s shopfronts into 1930s period style to create an authentic setting for the veterinary drama. But it was when the show began to air in the US that things really took off.
“The impact of visitors is just colossal,” Furniss said. “I have a map of America in my bookshop now so we can talk knowledgeably about where people are from. The village has got used to it, now that we know how the filming works. The crew are all so friendly – it’s a messy experience but enjoyable at the same time.”
The impact can be enduring. Local Hero was critically acclaimed on its release in 1983, but the movie was only a minor hit at the box office. Even so, 40 years later there is still a stream of visitors to Pennan, a seaside village near Aberdeen, to see the phone box where the main character used to call his bosses in Houston.
Bill Pitt and his wife, Lynn, from Charleston in South Carolina, were among those visitors in 2005. “We stayed in Crovie [four miles away] but really we were coming to see the phone box,” Pitt said. He joked to her during the holiday that they should retire to north-east Scotland. Now the Pitts live in Pennan, running a self-catering cottage business, and Bill is responsible, along with his friend Eddie Hayes, for painting the phone box to protect it from sea spray.
“I contacted BT and said, ‘We’ve got a dynamite phone box here, people come here to see it – would you mind if I painted it?’
“They said, ‘Sure – we’ll even send you the paint’.
“It’s such a special place. And when the weather’s nice, people stop and they look, and they get their picture taken. All because of the movie.”

5 Nutritionists & Naturopaths On What You Will Never Find In Their Fridge
By Marie Bladt
Spring often brings a deluge of toxic messaging around “summer body prep”—instead, we prefer to focus on keeping your body strong and well-nourished. Here, five nutritionists and naturopaths tell Vogue the foods they always steer clear of, from surprising ultra-processed foods to to diet items.
Sarah Benhamou
Processed deli meats. The reason? They contain nitrites, which are known to have a negative impact on health.
Industrial fruit juices . Not only are they guaranteed to spike blood sugar levels , but they also have almost no nutritional value.
Processed convenience foods . If you’re crunched for time, choose organic frozen fish with organic frozen vegetables—not something you don't know the composition of.
Lucile Champy
Packaged puddings. They’re ultra-processed and contain additives that do terrible damage to our microbiota and increase chronic inflammation. It’s so easy to make homemade versions with real ingredients.
0% fat yogurts . Paradoxically, consuming diet products is the best way to gain weight. They are often sweeter (to compensate for the lack of fat), while “sugar-free” versions are loaded with artificial sweeteners. Instead, try greek yogurt.
Butter . I’m not anti-butter, but I prefer ghee or healthy oils.
Mary Delberghe
Cows’ milk yogurts. At least the ones from supermarkets, which are inflammatory and acidifying. They contain cow milk proteins (such as casein) and lactose, which can be difficult to digest for some people and lead to inflammatory reactions. I’ve seen a real difference in my skin and digestion after cutting them out. I’ve replaced them with plant-based yogurts and compotes.
Margarine. This butter substitute has no nutritional benefits whatsoever. Vegetable oils are disastrous for the planet and for our health, and most commercial margarines contain both trans fats (known to increase cholesterol levels and the risk of heart disease) and hydrogenated vegetable oils. Instead, I use real sources of fat such as butter, ghee, and coconut, olive, or nut oils.
Industrial fruit juices . These are often full of added sugar and lack the beneficial fiber found in whole fruit. They can also cause blood sugar levels to spike throughout the day, which can have consequences for our weight and energy levels.
Mary Capelle
Processed convenience foods . They’re too high in salt and bad fats. I prefer to have plenty of vegetables in my fridge to snack on.
Butter. It’s too rich in saturated fats. For cooking , I prefer steaming, even if it means adding good fats with omega-3s to my vegetables afterward, or, if I use a frying pan, I opt for olive oil or coconut oil.
Industrial fruit juices. When fruit juice is extracted, the fibers that trap the sugar are gone, making it both sweeter and less healthy for us. Instead of juice, try flavoring your H 2 O by adding a tablespoon of mint, orange blossom, or thyme water for every 500ml.
Mélodie Dewever
Cows’ milk products. Dairy products made from cows’ milk are inflammatory, containing an enzyme that makes digestion difficult, as well as casein, a protein that many people are sensitive to (and can lead to acne, digestive problems, migraines, and more). That’s before mentioning the cardiovascular problems they can cause, and the environmental impact of their production.
Processed products. I’m an advocate of fresh, raw produce, which can be assembled and prepared simply by adding herbs, spices, and lemon.
Sodas. They’re full of sugar (even Diet Coke), highly inflammatory, and cause blood sugar levels to soar. I prefer a good sparkling water or simply water with a little lemon and mint.

Ukraine Asks U.S. to Provide More Intelligence on Targets in Russia
American officials say they do not want U.S. weapons used in cross-border attacks or intelligence reports used to strike inside Russia.
- Share full article
By Helene Cooper , Julian E. Barnes , Eric Schmitt and Michael Schwirtz
Helene Cooper reported from Brussels, Julian E. Barnes from Washington, Eric Schmitt from Tampa, Fla., and Michael Schwirtz from Kyiv, Ukraine.
Ukraine has asked the Biden administration to provide more intelligence on the position of Russian forces and military targets inside Russia as Ukrainian troops struggle to hold ground in the war, according to U.S. and Ukrainian officials.
A group of Ukrainian Parliament members also met with members of Congress in Washington to press for the United States to allow Kyiv to use American weapons in Russia.
Ukraine’s requests have become more urgent in recent weeks as Russia has taken advantage of delays in shipments of American weapons and intensified military operations in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine.
But White House officials said the administration’s longstanding policy remained unchanged: The United States is not encouraging or enabling attacks inside Russia. American officials, seeking to avoid escalating the war, have insisted they do not want U.S. weapons used in cross-border attacks or their intelligence reports used to target sites in Russia.
The latest request came in recent days, officials said, and administration officials have begun to review it. Similar appeals have been turned down in the past.
The United States provides some intelligence to Ukraine on Russian forces in Russia, for example, on troops that are massing for potential attacks. Ukraine also has access to commercial satellite imagery that allows it to see Russian activity at major military bases.
But Ukrainian officials say they need to increase the number and effectiveness of their cross-border attacks to press Moscow to end the war, according to current and former Ukrainian officials. To do that, those officials say they want more real-time intelligence and more information from allies on what U.S. and European officials think are the most critical targets.
Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that the Ukrainians had been “asking us for help to be able to strike into Russia” but that the request was broad and not “specific to a weapons system.”
At the moment, “we don’t help them with any of their stuff they do into Russia,” he told reporters on Thursday on his flight to Brussels for NATO meetings.
A former Ukrainian official said American and allied intelligence on Russian military assets across the border would allow Ukraine to more accurately plan routes for its drones and guided missiles. Those weapons must fly low to avoid radar, requiring detailed terrain mapping.
And while some commercial imagery helps the Ukrainians locate Russia’s mobile air defenses, American intelligence would provide better and faster information.
There are signs that Ukraine’s cross-border strategy is becoming more effective, and allied officials say an expanded campaign, particularly one targeting Russia’s defense industry and manufacturing plants, would be critical to changing the trajectory of the war.
On Friday, President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said his troops were moving into the Kharkiv region to carve out a buffer zone that would make it more difficult for Ukrainian forces to strike the Russian border city of Belgorod.
American officials say those strikes have been a major irritant for the Kremlin. General Brown said Russia did not appear to have enough forces or supplies to take Kharkiv.
In the face of Russia’s incremental gains, and Ukraine’s critical shortage of troops, NATO allies are considering starting training missions inside Ukraine. Much military training is done at the unit level, and Ukraine has struggled to create a national program.
But American officials have cautioned allied governments about sending troops to Ukraine, worried that if Russia targeted them or they were killed in a strike, the alliance could quickly be drawn into a wider war.
Similar to the training missions, allied governments are considering loosening their restrictions on Ukraine’s cross-border actions, including by providing more intelligence on potential targets and allowing their weapons to be used inside Russia, Western officials said.
David Cameron, the British foreign secretary, said during a visit to Kyiv this month that Ukraine had “the right” to use weapons provided by London to strike targets inside Russia.
“Just as Russia is striking inside Ukraine, you can quite understand why Ukraine feels the need to make sure it’s defending itself,” Mr. Cameron told Reuters .
Russia responded to those comments with a threat to strike British military facilities and equipment in Ukraine “and beyond.” The Kremlin also summoned the British ambassador in Moscow to deliver a message of protest.
The United States has said it was up to Ukraine to decide whether to strike into Russia.
“We have not encouraged or enabled strikes outside of Ukraine, but ultimately Ukraine needs to make decisions for itself on how it conducts this war,” Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said on Wednesday. “We will continue to back Ukraine with the equipment it needs to win.”
Elbridge Colby, a critic of the Biden administration’s policies on Ukraine, said the tensions between Britain and Russia over Mr. Cameron’s remarks showed the dangers of insufficiently considered escalation.
“These Russian counterthreats are very concrete and relatively proportional,” said Mr. Colby, who was a Pentagon official during the Trump administration. “And that’s the thing that worries me.”
Providing intelligence to specifically target the Russians in Russia would be a significant erosion of the guardrails the Biden administration has put in place to prevent the conflict from widening beyond the borders of Ukraine, he added.
“Like in the early years in Vietnam, we are step by step moving toward the erosion of the boundaries that we have set for ourselves,” Mr. Colby said. “We’ve been in this for two and a half years. We’re in a war of attrition with Russia and we’re steadily escalating. Is that where we want to be?”
An earlier version of this article mischaracterized comments by Elbridge Colby, a Pentagon official in the Trump administration. He said that providing intelligence to specifically target the Russians in Russia would erode the Biden administration’s guardrails to prevent the Ukraine war from widening, not that providing intelligence to Russia would do so.
