Brisbane Art Deco Walking Tour – New Farm

Brisbane Art Deco Walking Tour – New Farm

Meet at the Bandstand in New Farm Park for a specially designed two-hour walk, exploring a selection of New Farm’s Art Deco gems.

New Farm was transformed as the 1920’s Art Deco design concepts swept the globe. Brisbane’s leading architects responded by designing modern houses, and prestigious purpose-built, multi-level blocks of flats. The Art Deco flat was considered to be the height of modernity and sophistication.

The exteriors of these constructions, incorporating the Californian bungalow aesthetic and many Mediterranean elements, are often reminiscent of the homes of Hollywood’s stars of the “silent film era.”

New Farm’s inter-war (1918–1939) Art Deco flats were compact, furnished with time-saving electrical appliances and private garages. Built close to transport and with proximity to the city, these buildings were “in vogue.” They attracted Brisbane’s professionals and top-end buyers.

Tour leader Santina Musumeci grew up and was educated in Brisbane’s inner city. Her family moved to New Farm 40 years ago. Santina has been a member of the New Farm Historical Society since 2009.

Midway through a Queensland cruise, I'm taking a break from seafood and surf to spend the day in Brissie on a tour of the city's art deco buildings. I meet my host, Moe Akgun, outside the international cruise terminal in Brisbane.

"Clyde" outside Chateau Nous.

It's not difficult to spot Moe, a man who's dressed like he's just stepped out of the 1930s. Standing beside a vintage, midnight-blue, 1937 Dodge convertible, he and the car attract plenty of attention from passers-by who stop for a photo and to admire the details.

"Nice car," I say, extending a hand to introduce myself.

"We don't call it a car, this beauty is an automobile," he says with a smile.

We don't call it a car, this beauty is an automobile.

I hop in the backseat of "Clyde", one of two automobiles in Moe's fleet. The other, a 1936 vintage Chrysler airstream sedan, is known as "Bonnie". Moe, who caught the art deco bug after a visit to Napier in New Zealand, a city renowned as one of the art deco capitals of the world, has a cheeky sense of humour.

"You can book us for weddings, formals, art deco tours and the occasional bank robbery, but don't tell anyone," he says.

It's not difficult to spot Moe.

The Sunshine State isn't top of mind when thinking of prime examples of art deco architecture in Australia; we might list Sydney's Hayden Orpheum or perhaps the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne.

Yet the interwar decades of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s were prime creative years for the architects, builders and designers who were shaping the capital of Queensland. Though many examples of the original buildings have been demolished or significantly changed, many impressive examples remain. Today, we'll be driving across the Story Bridge and around the 1930s-era Woolstores buildings of Teneriffe. We'll visit inner-city Fortitude Valley, where two of the finest examples of deco aesthetics are found in the McWhirters and TC Beirne & Co former department stores. Moe has plenty more surprises planned.

  • We have found a stunning Spanish island that looks just like Mars

First, we head to a tree-lined street in upscale Ascot to admire Chateau Nous. Built from 1939 for a local dentist, the beautiful home is considered one of the most impressive remaining residential structures from the interwar period. Now painted white, it was once pastel blue. Moe says there's a bomb shelter under the house, not an uncommon feature from a time when Japanese air raids were anticipated. It's a fascinating insight into a period in Australia's history I'd like to know more about.

After posing for photos in front of the house, we continue our tour of Brisbane's lovely streets. It's a very drivable city, especially for the passenger (me) who gets to sit back and feel the wind in the hair as the views pass by. Even without the art deco element, this is a great city tour.

"You don't just see old buildings, you see Brisbane differently," Moe says.

My Guide Moscow

Art Deco Museum

In December, 2014, the first private Art Deco Museum in Russia opened in the former mansion of Imperial Mint on the Luzhnetskaya Embankment. The founder of the museum, Mkrtich Okroyan, is widely known in the world of art thanks to his participation in the Sotheby's exhibition in Paris for the 100th anniversary of Diaghilev's seasons and the exhibition at the Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco in Salamanca. Not to make profit but reflect his personal passion for Art Deco and especially to its architecture, Mr. Okroyan has been carefully gathering the masterpieces during over 20 years from various countries. At a rough estimate, the museum's collection of 900 sculptures made of ivory, marble and bronze, more than 500 items of furniture, and decorative arts is valued at $100 million. You will not meet at any Russian state museum the outstanding works, such as sculptures by Demetre Chiparus (famous figurines depicting dancers of Russian Ballet Seasons), Claire Colinet, Ferdinand Preiss or Bruno Zach, lacquered panels by Jean Dunand, consoles and lamps by Edgar Brandt, furniture by Paul Follot, Andre Arbus, Jules Lelue, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann  and others.

Art Deco Museum has become a perfect platform for educational programs for children and parents, and temporary expositions. Mkrtich Okroyan, the author of the book 'Art Deco Sculpture: From Root to Flourishing', has managed to gather a team of professionals, who have been leading wide range of educational and scientific-research activities over 10 years based on the museum's collection: expositions, lectures, seminars, master classes. Art Deco Museum plans to arrange a multimedia library, hold roundtables and conferences, involve actively students of Russian and European institutes of arts for studying and popularizing Art Deco style.

Among the 'Must See' exhibits of Art Deco Museum are 'Les Girls' by Demetre Chiparus, 'Set of Furniture for a Billiard Room' by Louis Majorelle, decorative panels by Pierre Bobot originated from Roseland Ballroom in New York, 'La Chasse' by Jean Dunand (small-scale author copy of the panel created for the 1st class smoking room of Normandie), 'The Fire and the Flame' by Ferdinand Preiss as well as Edgar Brandt pieces.

Founder and owner of the museum

Okroyan Okroevich Mkrtich

Director of the museum

Alla Feodorovna Baban

Philanthropist and entrepreneur Okroyan Okroevich Mkrtich became the first collector in Russia to form an extensive collection of works from the Art Deco era. Popularization of the collection and acquaintance of the Russian audience with the Art Deco style is one of the main tasks of the thematic museum.

The museum is a member of ICOM.

The museum conducts active exhibition and educational activities: lectures and seminars, workshops and exhibitions, and conferences and round tables are held. The museum regularly hosts sightseeing and thematic tours of the museum’s exposition, where you can learn about the decorative arts of the 1920-1940s. The series of educational programs are designed for a wide audience and are dedicated to various aspects of the development of art of the 1880s-1950s. The series of lectures “Legendary Art Deco” introduces the atmosphere of the “Roaring Twenties”, the era of jazz and Charleston, music halls, and Hollywood films. The “Multi-faced Art Nouveau” course is devoted to the Art Nouveau style, in which its stylistic features are highlighted in detail, with special emphasis on the regional features of Art Nouveau. The Art Deco Museum annually takes part in the Olympics “Museums. Parks. Estates”, designed for students who are invited to go through an exciting quest at the museum. The “Student’s Day at the Art Deco Museum” and the annual conference “Art Nouveau – Art Deco: Metamorphosis of Styles” are aimed at studying the theoretical, educational, methodological, and practical heritage of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. These events allow not only the discussion of current problems in the theory and history of art, but also the establishment of contacts and ties in the scientific community.

The “Generation 55+” program, created by the museum team, is dynamic and is based on the use of various formats of active immersion in the history of art. Regular lectures, film screenings, tours, and workshops allow the older generation to keep up an active lifestyle and intellectual well-being.
