Amazing trip, great group of guys

I was initially a little worried about going on a group trip, not knowing anybody and being used to doing my own thing on holiday, but I signed up because every review was so positive. Well there’s a reason those reviews are so damn good! I had an amazing time on their Greece trip in June. Within days I felt so comfortable, so relaxed and had so many new friends. Detours offers such a flexible trip, which you can make your own and do the activities you want. You simply must do the mud bath on Santorini - your skin feels so good afterwards - and the ATVs on Milos are a highlight – exploring the island is awesome. As a vego, there were always options at the restaurants (occasionally a bit repetitive), and on Milos lots of amazing locally made cheeses. Shane is the greatest trip leader! He’s such a fun, easy going and experienced leader who really goes the extra mile to make your trip memorable. I’ll definitely be a repeat customer.

We had an amazing trip with Detours to Costa Rica. Really enjoyed being part of the group. Excellent program and guide. Good value for money. But do read carefully what you sign up for. Detours runs a concept that is different from your average tour operator. So be sure this is really the kind of travel you want.

Detours delivers with South Africa

Do you enjoy adventure? Meeting new people? Wildlife? If so, Detours has yet another amazing destination for you! South Africa has some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes that I have experienced. Miles and Dan, the group leaders, did a wonderful job of exposing us to some of the amazing culture and cuisine that CapeTown, Paarl, Kruger Park and Johannesburg have to offer. In true Detours fashion, they offered up a ton of options for ways to experience the cities/towns we visited. The word “option” is always important because there is never pressure from any of the group leaders to pack your day full, unless that’s what you want. The Detours experience is catered to you, which I LOVE! There is never a shortage of options for activities and this trip had some exceptional experiences to offer. Everyone seems to have a “bucket list” and just going to South Africa was on mine…little did I know I would cage dive with great white sharks, see the big 5 in Kruger Park and be able to get up close with an elephant in an elephant sanctuary. This trip really has something for everybody. I highly recommend heading to South Africa with Detours.

"Winelands, Wild Animals, Winds of The Cape"--South Africa

As a veteran traveler, I seek the challenges of diversity, culture, adventure in a foreign land and my hopes were more than met by the inaugural Detours Travel trip to South Africa. My title captures all the W's for Wins in this wondrous adventure that explored the winelands of Parrl (reminiscent of California Central Valley) where you will learn a lot traveling to vineyards, Then there were the safaris, most notably to famed Kruger National Park (the size of New Jersey) where we were fortunate in seeing all the major WILD animals, highlighted by the elusive leopard who dramatically posed on top of an anthill for us. I was thrilled to see Cape Hope, the cliffs, pounding waves, black penguin colony, rugged landscape in a national park. Capetown is one of the "coolest" seaport towns I have ever experienced with endless activities and friendly people. Then the unanticipated surprises--visiting an elephant sanctuary and touching all parts of the elephant, visiting one of the world's largest canyons, Blyde River Canyon Nature Preserve, and getting to feed the vultures at the Mohotoholo Wildlife Sanctuary and the opportunity to see diverse parts of the South African landscape--savannahs, mountain rages, desert, rivers, shoreline, beaches, farmland, vineyards, and, of course, Tabletop Mt. National Park. Balmy sunny weather, fine hotels, delicious food (inexpensive...and best burgers anywhere). The key element of all of this were our two dedicated, caring, skillful, charming, energetic, helpful guides, Miles and Dan, who admirably strived that each individual had the best possible trip. ---Kenny

Have been researching travel insurance for our March trip to Nepal and Bhutan. Medical transportation is most important considering the remoteness. I came across Detour Travel which has a policy I like. The cost, however, is about 2/3 less than compable policies. Since it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There are no ratings anywhere on the internet. It is underwritten by Nationwide. Anyone have experience with this company?

I do not know what insurance products Detour Travel sells.

In your place, I would read the policy and the small print well. Key with health insurance is, how you get support fast (e.g. 24/7 emergency hotline).

Agree 100% with DP! When I first started looking at travel insurance years ago, I searched on insuremytrip.com. From there I went directly to multiple insurance companies and found the one that worked for what we wanted. Now, when I want medical travel coverage (because everything else is cancellable) then I purchase a GeoBlue policy. I haven't had a tour type of trip since I left a position that covered travel insurance so do not know who I would use in that instance.

Travel coverage offered by credit cards may not be sufficient. I would opt for a policy from a reputable travel 1nsurance provider instead.

+1 to start with insure my trip.com

We also started with insure my trip. We selected an annual policy with Alliance. They offer several levels of coverage, the higher ones have med evac coverage.

Last year I purchased policy from AXA via squaremouth.com. The policy (which only cost me $105 for 6 weeks of coverage) provided *primary* medical coverage.

I ended up breaking my arm in Portugal. AXA reimbursed me 100% of my medical costs, including medications.

Below is what I found about Detour on the Squaremouth.com I am going to go with it for my trip to Galapagos in May. I am going to purchase if on the Squaremouth.com website.

Is that because Detour don’t sell insurance?

When you request a quote on their website, it lands on https://www.visitorscoverage.com where you can select a plan and purchase it there.

@#3 Travel insurance provided by cc varies but our crefit card insurance is provided by Allianz and is their standard policy which is far more generous than some others.eg unlimited cover for Medivac.

I have met quite a few people who think that because its "free" which BTW its not (there are conditions) - that its dodgy. My advice is check and compare all policies carefully.

While my credit card insurance will cover a lot of my needs, I have used Travelguard for easily 15 years. I have had three claims (one theft, one trip delay, one cancellation) all three were handled easily and quickly. I was an insurance agent for 45 years, and was impressed with their service.

LeBaron construction will impact Morrill Road, bus route

By Jeff Budlong May 02, 2024

Map1

The orange zone on this map indicates the location of a temporary closure of Morrill Road adjacent to LeBaron Hall. Sidewalk closures and detours also will be part of the project. Maps courtesy of facilities planning and management.

The two-year process of demolishing and replacing LeBaron Hall will begin this summer. The $39 million project will require the temporary closing of a short section of Morrill Road with changes to traffic flow and a CyRide bus route, and temporary sidewalk closures.

Listen to a recording of facilities planning and management project manager Liz Clarke talk about the LeBaron Hall construction project.

Construction -- led by Des Moines-based Neumann Brothers -- will begin with a fence erected around LeBaron in late June and work commencing July 1. The project will demolish LeBaron, replace it with a new building and renovate the circulation corridor connecting LeBaron to MacKay Hall and the Human Nutritional Sciences Building. Work is scheduled to conclude in fall 2026.

Project manager Liz Clarke, facilities planning and management, said the LeBaron auditorium is not part of this project and will remain in use during construction. Everyone will use the north or west entrances to get to the auditorium from outside.

Road closure

A section of Morrill Road adjacent to LeBaron will close at the end of June for the duration of the project. Two-way traffic will be allowed on the south end of the road, up to the closure. A temporary turnaround at the Morrill Hall and Hub service driveway will be available for drivers making deliveries and employees who park along Morrill Road. The closure will eliminate some parking on Morrill during construction, and the parking division is contacting impacted drivers.

Trucks delivering materials and equipment to and from the construction site will follow one route, arriving to the north side of campus, traveling west on Pammel Drive, south on Bissell Road, east on Osborn Drive and finally south on Morrill (see map below). Whenever possible, deliveries will avoid the busiest times of the day, Clarke said.

CyRide and sidewalks

Beginning Monday, May 13, CyRide's orange route 23 will be rerouted around Morrill Road for the duration of the road closure, no longer stopping at Parks Library or Beardshear Hall. Instead of turning south on Morrill Road from Osborn Drive, buses will continue west to Bissell Road and travel south on Bissell to Union Drive.

Morrill Road's westside sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians and bicyclists. Bicyclists will dismount and walk their bikes through the closed road area.

Portions of sidewalks north, east and south of LeBaron will be closed throughout the project with signs posted to alert pedestrians.

Trees and art

Clarke said trees within the construction area were evaluated by experts.

"A limited number of trees were identified for removal due to poor condition," she said. "There will be exclusionary fencing installed around several trees that will remain and be monitored."

Pieces of public art in or near the construction site will be disassembled, stored during the project and reinstalled after completion.

COVID-19: Updates & Policies

After a long period of cancelled trips amid the world's travel shutdown, all Detours trips in all destinations are now proceeding as planned and have been since the beginning of 2022.  We're relieved to be back to the fun and adventures that all of us missed so much. While the pandemic isn't over, we've worked with our partners in all destinations to ensure that we're able to offer our travelers the fun and safe experience that they've come to expect from Detours.  We can't wait to welcome you back onto your next trip with us!

A Not-so-new Normal

From a private villa in the Costa Rican jungle, to a century-old manor house in the winelands of South Africa, to a small boutique hotel on the quiet island of Milos in Greece, we've always put an emphasis on small properties in unique locations while avoiding crowded big-box resorts.  Even in tourist hot spots like Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, and Mykonos, we've always prioritized smaller boutique properties with plenty of character.  Our hotel and transportation partners have largely adopted improved cleaning and sanitization procedures to keep travelers are safe and comfortable as possible.  Local regulations regarding mask-wearing, distancing, and entry rules have disappeared in most of our destinations but if you're curious about the current situation in a particular destination, just ask!

Rescheduling Bookings

Travel restrictions and Covid concerns led to hundreds of cancelations during the pandemic.  Sometimes Detours was forced to cancel a trip, and sometimes our travelers chose to cancel their trips due to travel concerns.  Either way, if your space on a trip was cancelled and you've got a credit to use with us, just get in touch any time to use that credit.  We never put any expiry date or destination restrictions on credits.

OUR CURRENT COVID POLICY

Updated: February 7th, 2023

Nobody likes the C-word, but as long as Covid is still around it’s something that we, especially as a travel business, must be prepared to face and it’s important that you, our travelers, understand our policy regarding vaccinations, positive cases, and exposures.

Group settings, including traveling and sharing experiences as a group, come with an inherent risk of contracting Covid.  Detours will communicate any applicable local laws and regulations regarding testing, masking, distancing and isolating, and we expect our travelers to follow these local laws.  That said, we do not require our trip leaders to police these local rules and each traveler is responsible for any repercussions that may arise from their failure to follow and abide by them.

  • Do I need to be vaccinated to join a trip?

No.  Vaccination against Covid-19 is not a requirement to join a Detours trip, but it's important that you confirm that your destination (as well as any stopover along the way) does not have any entry regulations that may keep you from entering the country.

  • What if someone tests positive for Covid on a trip?

We have a duty of care to our travelers and a responsibility to keep each person in our groups as safe as possible as they travel with us.  This means that, if a Detours trip leader or staff are made aware of a positive Covid case within a group, our policy is to isolate and distance that person from others in the group.  In practice, while we will assist with connecting the traveler with local medical care, guidance, and travel arrangements this may mean a positive case will not be able to continue traveling with the group until a negative test is provided.  Any additional costs associated with the deviation from the group itinerary will be the responsibility of the affected traveler.  We strongly suggest travelers protect themselves with travel insurance which covers Covid-related costs.  If the traveler is able to provide a negative test result prior to the end of the itinerary, Detours will assist in arranging the re-joining of the group.

  • What if I get Covid before the trip?

You're welcome to cancel and/or reschedule your Detours trip at least 60 days prior to the starting date with no cancellation or change fees, however, we must pass along any unrecoverable costs such as domestic flights, etc. that have been paid for using your deposit.  If you test positive for Covid in the days leading up to your Detours trip and you aren’t able to join the full group trip we will assist in providing the necessary documentation for an insurance claim, but as all of our partners in your destination have been paid and the ability to fill your space has passed, we are unable to provide refunds or credits in this case.  If you are able to provide a negative result and join the group late, however, we will assist in coordinating the joining of the trip midway through the itinerary.  We strongly suggest travelers protect themselves with travel insurance which covers Covid-related costs.

  • What happens in cases of roommate sharing if one person tests positive?

Some of our solo travelers choose to share their room with another solo traveler.  If one of these travelers becomes ill and test positive for Covid during the trip, it is the responsibility of the positive case to remove themselves from their shared room and, with the assistance of Detours, book a separate single-occupancy room at the positive traveler’s cost.  We strongly suggest travelers protect themselves with travel insurance which covers Covid-related costs.

To ensure the consistent treatment of all guests, and to ensure clarity to all guests, our Detours trip leaders are not able to make exceptions to the above policies.  Your Detours trip leader as well as our Detours office staff will assist as much as possible to ensure that anyone who tests positive for Covid during a Detours trip is assisted with medical and travel care as required and re-joined with the group before the itinerary if possible.

  • There are several sources that we use to inform our decisions about traveling in a particular country during this pandemic.  We suggest the following sites with regularly updated information:
  • Europe: Re-Open EU
  • World: IATA's Interactive Map

We really appreciate your continued patience as we navigate the changing world of travel, and we can't wait to get back out there with you!  If you have any questions related to traveling with us, please reach out at [email protected] or give us a call at 1-800-680-8066.
