FIT Travel: All About Independence

fit leisure travel

TripSavvy /  Wenjia Tang

Originally, the acronym "FIT" stood for "foreign independent tour," but now it is most commonly used to describe a fully independent traveler or tourist. You might also see the term "FIT" used to mean "free independent traveler ," "frequent independent traveler," or "foreign independent traveler." All of these definitions share a keyword and concept: independent. These travelers almost always design their own itineraries and arrange their own travel plans—FITs do not travel with group tours or according to any schedule imposed by others.

FITs Shun Group Travel

Tourists who fit the definition of FITs usually travel solo ; in couples; or in small, intimate groups of friends or family. They range anywhere in age from millennials to retirees , but generally, they have above-average incomes that allow for independent travel, which can be more expensive than traveling with an organized group. But what all FITs share, by definition, is a desire to avoid mass tourism in favor of an individualized, independent approach. They tend to want to explore their chosen destinations on their own and at their own pace with an emphasis on enjoying the local food, architecture, history, and culture.

FITs Plan Their Own Trips

The huge rise in availability of all aspects of travel planning online, including even websites devoted to helping you learn how to plan travel , has made it easier for independent travelers to plan their own specialized itineraries and book their own transportation and accommodations. This diminishes their need for traditional travel agents, and this also makes packaged trips have less appeal. As a result, FITs are a quickly growing segment of the tourist market. First-hand travel information about destinations , transportation arrangements such as train and plane tickets , and hotel reservations worldwide are available at the click of a mouse for independent travelers.

FITs Sometimes Use Travel Agents

Although the "I" in FITs means independent, it sometimes could be advantageous to consult with travel professionals who are experienced in providing services to those who want to plan their own trips, especially for more exotic destinations. Doing so does not necessarily mean that independent tourists have to relinquish their, well, independence. As a result of the rise in popularity of independent and solo travel, travel professionals are adjusting their services accordingly. There are now agencies that specialize in customized trips for individuals  and small groups who want to choose their destinations and plan their own itineraries.

The traveling is still independent, but the planning benefits from the professional expertise and inside knowledge of a travel agent . And of course, it takes much less time than searching for all the information you need on your own.

An agent who specializes in FIT travel can help you plan custom sightseeing with a private tour guide, arrange a private cooking class or a wine-tasting tour , and even hook you up with knowledgeable local representatives. The agent will help you plan a personalized travel experience based on the input you provide. If you wish, an agent can often arrange to have someone meet you at your destination and take you to your hotel. Travel professionals are especially helpful in finding non-traditional or out-of-the-way accommodations that do not advertise on the internet, such as villas, farmhouses , inns, and family-run bed-and-breakfasts.

Life is a special gift. Within that there’s no better gift than good health; physical and mental.

But we love to travel – and when you’re on the move, it can be hard to prioritise health. When we discovered fitness resorts and wellness programmes, it completely changed the game.

So we have reviewed some of the best fitness retreats in the WORLD. Not only will I cover gruelling, heart-pumping health and fitness holidays, but yoga, meditation, and wellness retreats, surf camps, nature immersive escapes, and more!

Finding a Fitness Retreat for You

Top fitness retreats in the world, best fitness resorts in the outdoors, best surf retreats, meditation and yoga retreats, best wellness retreats, best fitness retreat for you bad folks, best affordable fitness retreats, best luxurious fitness retreats, faqs about the best fitness retreats, final thoughts on the best fitness retreats in the world.

The days of MTV girls’ gone wild beach resorts are behind us. Wellness travel is now one of the fastest-growing sectors in tourism because people are tired of needing a vacation from their vacation.

People are looking to detox on holiday, not to destroy their livers in the process. People are looking for ways to get away from the stress, not deplete their adrenals faster than their bank account.

Don’t get me wrong: there are times and places for partying and letting loose (this is a backpacker blog, after all), but there is also a time and place for staying fit on the road and fitness classes that are actually restorative and rejuvenating.

Although there are some expensive retreats out there, I’ve hand-picked the getaways and fitness resorts that are worth your money. I’ve also included many affordable getaways so even we backpackers can take a break from the crazy hostel life once and a while.

surfing fitness retreats

As someone who personally likes to work out hard, hit the gym, and go on adventures, I also appreciate   working inwards through yoga and meditation, digital detoxes, and nature immersion. I always ensure my backpack is equipped with light and reliable travel workout gear to stay fit on the roads.

You can trust that I’ve covered a solid variety of wellness and fitness getaways that encompass my passion for health and travel.

I’d like to point out that wellness and fitness are not interchangeable, and sometimes athletes sacrifice health and longevity to achieve maximal physical fitness and performance, but the two can go hand in hand. Many of the fitness and wellness retreats I cover below incorporate healthy food, restorative rest, digital detoxes, mobility, and recovery in balance with intensive workouts and adventures.

Some of the best fitness retreats in the world include surf and yoga retreats, outdoor escapes, adventurous locations, luxurious getaways, and more. As mentioned, I’ve included a few amazing surf and fitness camps for those of us on a budget.

I am going to cover a few fitness retreats that focus on your physical fitness as well as particular skill sets like martial arts and CrossFit. Some will focus more on group settings, while others on silent meditation.

Whatever your health goals are, it’s likely there’s a wellness holiday out there for you. Let’s dig in, shall we?

While a lot of the best fitness resorts include yoga classes, this section focuses on ashrams, all-inclusive yoga retreats, and meditation retreats, specifically. I have listed some of the most popular yoga retreats, but generally included many of the best retreats and shalas offered in India and across the world.

I have excluded obscenely priced retreats from this section. Please see my luxurious fitness retreat section below for those. Most of these the best yoga retreats in the world reside in yoga’s birthplace of India, though not all, and I added a couple of different retreats elsewhere.

Keep in mind, you can show up to travel India or Asia and find a retreat that speaks to you, but if you want to book everything ahead of time, then these suggestions are a great place to start.

Young Girl Yoga, Nusa Lembongan

17. Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Light of BKS Iyengar

This might be one of the most popular yoga retreats in the world, as it is the heart and soul of Iyengar Yoga. There is a great significance behind the unique design of RIMYI. The three floors represent the body, mind, and soul. Its height is 71 feet and has 8 columns which represent the eight limbs of ashtanga yoga i.e.yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, Dharana, dhyana and samadhi. The institute conducts regular classes for beginners, intermediate, and advanced yogis.

18. Samma Karuna

Where: Koh Phangan, Thailand

Looking for a meditation trip? One of the best yoga retreats in the world? A place to meet like-minded people? Samma Karuna is located amongst the palm trees, beautiful beaches, and jungle landscapes of Koh Phangan, and this place is more like a community than a retreat.

They offer various packages, teacher training courses, a unique 1-month Awakening and Healing program, and shorter stays too. My friend has raved about how incredible this yoga getaway is.

Don’t be alarmed that Koh Phangan is the infamous Full Moon Party island because there are many lowkey spots on the island as well, and I’ve heard the yoga on Koh Phangan is overall incredible at many studios and retreat centers.

19. Mysore Mandala

Where: Mysore, India (Ashtanga’s birthplace)

If you are looking for an Ashtanga-style yoga and meditation retreat in India , this is one of the best Yoga retreats in India. Mysore Mandala Yoga Shala is a Yoga and Cultural Centre located in charming Heritage House with a cafe supplied by the owners’ organic farm on-site.

Right in my backyard of California’s Central Coast, The Sagrada Wellness retreat is nestled amongst the quiet hilltops of Santa Margarita, California. I love that there is no internet, and you can fully disconnect from technology to practice yoga, eat farm-to-table organic foods, meditate, journal, and spa in peace.

They also run “Singlehood Retreat” making them one of the best spiritual retreats for singles. Considering the location, there are wine and yoga retreats, too because of wine not?

Ana Maya Resort works with the neighbouring Rancho Delicioso to do yoga packages with their permaculture courses, scuba and surf camps, aerial silk, and archery. Rancho Delicioso is just a few miles away. It’s more affordable but not as luxurious as Ana Maya, and so many guests do one week at Anamaya and one at Rancho Delicioso.

22. Yoga Goa Purple Valley

With access to the world’s best Ashtanga teachers (John Scott, Petri Raisanen, Alexander Medin), Goa’s Purple Valley one of the best yoga retreats in the world to practice Mysore-style yogic living.

FIT: Free Independent Traveler

Definition of fit.

FIT stands for Free Independent Traveler. It refers to individuals who prefer to travel independently without being part of a tour group. As a FIT traveller, you have the freedom to plan and customize your trip according to your preferences. You can choose your own accommodations, transportation, and activities without relying on a tour operator.

Examples of FIT Tours

FIT tours encompass various forms of independent travel. Some popular examples include solo backpacking trips, self-guided tours, and customized itineraries. FIT travellers often seek unique experiences, off-the-beaten-path destinations, and the freedom to explore at their own pace.

Advantages of FIT Travel

FIT travel offers several advantages:

Flexibility : You have the freedom to design your itinerary and make changes as per your preferences.

Personalization : You can tailor your trip to your interests, choosing activities and destinations that align with your preferences.

Authenticity : FIT travel allows for a more immersive cultural experience, as you have the opportunity to interact with locals and explore local communities.

Independence : You are not bound by the schedules and constraints of a group tour, giving you the freedom to explore at your own leisure.

GIT: Group Inclusive Tour

Definition of git.

GIT stands for Group Inclusive Tour. In a GIT, travellers join a pre-arranged tour package where they travel with other tourists as part of a group. The tour package includes accommodations, transportation, and guided activities.

Examples of GIT Tours

GIT tours cater to travellers who prefer the convenience of travelling in a group. Examples of GIT tours include family vacations, organized group sightseeing tours, and adventure tours where participants share common experiences and activities.

Advantages of GIT Travel

GIT travel offers several advantages:

Convenience : All travel arrangements, including accommodations, transportation, and activities, are pre-organized, saving you the time and effort of planning.

Socialization : Traveling in a group provides opportunities to meet and interact with fellow travellers, fostering new friendships and shared experiences.

Guided Experience : GIT tours often include the services of a knowledgeable guide who provides insights and commentary about the destinations visited.

Cost Savings : Group tours can offer discounted rates and shared expenses, making them more cost-effective compared to individual arrangements.

IIT: Independent Inclusive Tour

Definition of iit.

In addition to FIT and GIT, there is another type of tour known as the Independent Inclusive Tour (IIT). IIT allows travellers to enjoy the benefits of group travel while still having the freedom to customize their itinerary.

Examples of IIT Tours

IIT tours are designed for travellers who desire some level of independence while still enjoying the convenience of group travel. Examples of IIT tours include small group tours with flexible itineraries, private guided tours with customizable activities, and themed tours catering to specific interests.

Advantages of IIT Travel

IIT travel offers a unique combination of group and independent travel:

Flexibility : IIT tours provide a balance between structured group activities and free time to explore independently.

Customization : Travelers can personalize their itinerary by choosing from a range of activities and destinations offered within the tour.

Social Interaction : IIT tours allow for socialization with like-minded travellers during group activities, providing opportunities for shared experiences.

Personal Attention : With smaller group sizes, IIT tours often provide a more personalized and intimate experience compared to larger group tours.

No, FIT tours are suitable for both solo travellers and small groups who prefer to travel independently.

Most GIT tours have scheduled activities, but some may offer free time for independent exploration. It’s best to check the tour itinerary before booking.

IIT tours can vary in price depending on the level of customization and services included. Some IIT tours may be more expensive, while others may offer cost-effective options.

GIT tours generally have fixed itineraries and limited customization options. If you seek more flexibility, an IIT tour may be a better choice.

There are typically no age restrictions for these tours. However, some specialized tours may have specific age requirements or activity limitations.

GIT tours are often preferred by families as they provide convenience, pre-arranged accommodations, and suitable activities for different age groups.

In conclusion, FIT, IIT, and GIT are terms used in the tourism industry to describe different types of travel experiences. FIT allows for independent and personalized travel, while GIT offers the convenience of group travel with pre-arranged arrangements. IIT combines elements of both, providing flexibility and customization within a group setting. Choosing the right type of tour depends on individual preferences, travel style, and desired level of independence. Consider your preferences, budget, and desired travel experience when selecting between FIT, IIT, and GIT tours.

What is FIT And GIT in The Tourism

by Hammad Ur Rehman | Oct 8, 2021 | Travel Guide | 7 comments

What is FIT And GIT in The Tourism

In the tourism industry, some travel terms can be a little bit confusing for tourists. For instance, FIT and GIT in tourism are such travel terms that people are mostly confused about. It is important to understand what FIT and GIT in tourism mean to avoid any future problems during your travel.

FIT (free independent traveler) definition:

FIT in tourism is an acronym for Free Independent Travelers. They are people who travel independently without being a part of any tour group. This type of tourism offers travelers an opportunity to travel on their own. As a free independent traveler, you travel without a tour operator and choose your accommodation, transportation, and other parts of your trip. You might take an organized package tour, but it is just you – not a group.

Examples of FIT Tour – Some examples of free independent travel are trekking, backpacking, bicycling, camping tourism, motorcycle touring, yacht traveling, etc.

GIT (Group Inclusive Tour) definition:

In GIT, you join other tourists for a Group Inclusive Tour and don’t have to worry about your accommodation, transportation, and other parts of your trip. A group of a minimum of 10 people travels together. These people can be related or non-related and usually book on the same travel arrangements. The group size is not defined by the number of travelers but by the size of accommodation reserved.

An important condition is that some people are responsible for the whole group, so it is possible to determine who will be the guide and travel organizer.

Examples of GIT Tour – Some examples of GIT are family tours, group tours to a monastery or a sightseeing place, etc.

FIT and GIT in the Tourism – Detailed Guide

Fit and git in the tour packages.

When you book a tour package, you should know what FIT and GIT mean. FIT is not defined in the package, which means that you will be traveling on your own. You are responsible for arranging all your travel arrangements – you will have to make reservations yourself. If you choose FIT, it also means that there are no refunds for any missed flights or accommodation bookings.

GIT is called a group inclusive tour, which means that you will travel with other tourists. When it comes to GIT, many different companies offer completely different conditions. The tour can be booked by 20 people or 50 people – the company decides how big the group should be. There is usually one organizing person in charge of the group size. This person has to ensure that all members are properly booked.

FIT or GIT?

Actually, it depends on your travel style. If you are not the type of person who is happy to travel with other tourists, FIT is perfect. However, if you don’t mind traveling with other people and you want everything to be arranged for you, GIT is the best choice.

Difference Between a FIT and GIT Package Tour

FIT and GIT package tours are different from many points of view, but the main difference comes from the number of people on a group tour.

Here are some main differences:

FIT Package:

  • This is suitable for a small number of people like couples or friends.
  • You have to be a free independent traveler who has the experience of traveling alone in different countries.
  • This is more secure and reliable for international travelers because all attention will be paid by the operator.
  • You will be provided with better accommodation and food facilities since there are fewer people in the group. This means you won’t have to share your room, dinner table or bathroom with other guests.
  • You also get one carrier instead of sharing it among many members of the group.
  • It also costs more than the GIT package.

GIT Package:

  • This is suitable for a large number of people like family or students / young people who are looking for adventure at a lower cost.
  • You will have to share your room with other guests, dinner table, tour carrier etc. Plus, you also do not have much freedom as you are not a free independent traveler.
  • You can get more facilities at a cheap rate than FIT Package tours.
  • You will have to share your tour carrier with other people in the group.
  • The rate depends on the size of the group.
  • It is more suitable for families, and students who want to have fun with other members of the group.

Is There Any Other Type Of Tour Package In Tourism?

Yes, besides FIT and GIT, there is also IIT(Independent inclusive tour), which is also quite popular in tourism industry.

Looking for something specific?

Is your hotel prepared to attract wellness travel and tourism.

The good news is people are traveling again. According to Euromonitor International , business and leisure tourism are both expected to rebound to pre-2019 levels in 2024. The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) Travel Forecast 2023 expects business travel to generate $1.2 trillion before the end of the year.

The challenge is attracting this business to your property. What do travelers want? What are they looking for in a hotel? How can your property distinguish itself from the competition?

Wellness Travel is Priority No. 1 for Business, Leisure and Bleisure Travelers

McKinsey & Company found that half of all consumers list wellness as a top priority in their day-to-day lives. And when they travel, people want to maintain that mental, emotional and physical fitness, whether they are traveling for business, leisure or blended business/leisure (bleisure) purposes.

Wellbeing offers an essential way to attract and retain new visitors. During the pandemic, people needed safe places to exercise indoors, and doing so became an important part of many self-care routines. According to Lululemon’s Global Wellbeing Report , there is an increased focus on the three pillars of wellbeing, especially the physical part.

  • 51% focus on physical well-being
  • 48% focus on mental well-being
  • 41% focus on social well-being

When thinking about luxury travel, 13% of affluent consumers would pay more for ‘custom health and wellness itineraries,’ according to YouGov 2023: What’s Next in Luxury Travel.

Spas and medical tourism are set to increase by 11% in 2023 and increase by an equal amount year-over-over through 2027, according to Euromonitor . In fact, 88% of respondents to the AmEx 2023 – Global Travel Trends Report say they plan on spending the same or more on wellness vacations this year compared to previous years. 72% say they’re more focused on self-care than they were a year ago, and 57% intend to take extended vacations to focus on wellness.

Hotels looking to attract travelers interested in fitness and wellbeing should focus on promoting what is offered on social media. Because of the willingness of this segment to pay for premium services, also develop ways to monetize access to fitness center programs in exchange for greater privacy and customization.

If you want to attract wellness travel and health tourism, consider:

  • Promoting a variety of wellness offerings, including workout facilities, meditation spaces and outdoor activities, such as hiking trails, bikes, snowshoes, cross-country skis, etc.
  • Providing access to complimentary on-demand or app integrations that include virtual fitness classes, yoga, meditation and other wellness activities.
  • Offering packages for solo travelers.
  • Investing in online and social media content that highlights your hotel’s fitness and wellness amenities.
  • Creating a workout space that guarantees exclusive access to customized fitness training or private on-demand fitness/wellness programs.
  • Promoting spa, fitness and/or wellness packages on social media.
  • Partnering with a wellness/fitness influencer to promote your offerings to this niche travel segment.

Business travel trends

Health and wellness amenities business travelers want from hotels

Business travelers are the most likely segment to seek out hotels for lodging. According to the AHLA Hotel Booking Index survey , 76% of business travelers prefer to stay in a hotel on a business trip. This segment is also brand loyal and pays close attention to the perks and points they receive at preferred hotels.

The BCD 2022 Traveler Survey has revealed that a driving factor, at least for business travelers and the 50% of business travelers intending to blending leisure travel, are the three pillars of wellbeing – physical, social and emotional health.

The three pillars of wellbeing show up as three of the five most influential factors:

  • 48% of business travelers make decisions influenced by their physical health
  • 36% are influenced by some routine, e.g, sports or scheduled activities
  • 36% are influenced by mental health

The same study found that to maintain wellbeing on the road:

  • 93% of travelers regularly or sometimes eat healthy
  • 66% regularly or sometimes exercise
  • 32% regularly or sometimes meditate
  • 58% use mobile apps aimed at improving their wellbeing

The BCD survey also determined the forms of wellbeing support business travelers value most:

  • 51% valued recommendations of restaurants with healthy menus
  • 43% valued nutrition, sleep and recovery advice
  • 35% valued gym membership while traveling

Business travelers have tight schedules. They need to fit their fitness routines into breaks in-between meetings or before/after the workday. Your hotel gym needs to be comprehensive, easily accessible and connected to meet their expectations.

To best serve this audience, consider:

  • Providing 24/7 access to the hotel fitness space/gym.
  • Purchasing equipment that interfaces with fitness apps so guests can track workouts or access custom training programs.
  • Offering on-demand programs guests can use in their rooms or in the fitness space.
  • Providing wellness tools they can use on the property and at home. For example, fitness exercises, sleep science classes or nutrition guidance.
  • Promoting fitness/wellbeing amenities to prospective guests online and on social media.
  • Developing fitness/spa programs where guests can redeem loyalty points in exchange for access or services.

Leisure travel trends and needs

Health and wellness amenities leisure travelers want from hotels

Leisure travel is an important budget priority for 78% of travelers, according to the American Express (AmEx) 2023 – Global Travel Trends Report . In fact, the survey found that 85% of its respondents plan to take two or more leisure trips in 2023.

‘Relax and rejuvenate’ is the main trip purpose for 50% of travelers globally, according to December 2022 TripAdvisor Research . The 2023 AHLA State of the Industry Report found that 60% of adults intend to take more vacation/leisure trips in 2023 compared to 2022.

Attention to wellness shows up as a major trend among the leisure travel segment in the AmEx study :

  • 75% of travelers intend to decrease screen time while traveling to improve mental health
  • 68% are seeking to surround themselves with nature to focus on mental clarity

Hotels can best serve leisure travelers by promoting how hotel wellbeing programs and fitness spaces can help them relax or kick-start energy levels by tying offerings into the ‘rest and rejuvenation’ theme.

To meet the needs of leisure travelers, consider:

  • Providing quality, essential equipment that is commensurate with what they use at their daily gym.
  • Creating a welcoming experience personalized to their travel objectives. For example, fitness that helps them start their day energized or wellness programs that help them disconnect.
  • Offering a connected health route, for example: healthy menus, wellbeing programs.
  • Adding on-demand yoga, stretching and meditation videos to the in-room television menu.
  • Sharing outside amenities that can enhance their overall wellness journey, such as walking trails.
  • Encouraging them to share their experiences online or on social media.

Bleisure travel trends and needs

Health and wellness amenities bleisure travelers want from hotels

Expedia Group’s Traveler Value Index 2023 found 76% of business travelers plan to extend their work trip for leisure purposes within the next 12 months. And 28% of those surveyed intended to take a ‘flexcation’ – a trip combining remote work with leisure travel.

According to Skyscanner , one in six respondents are likely to take blended business and leisure trips in 2023. Euromonitor estimates the value of this ‘bleisure’ market will be worth $360 billion by 2027, double its 2021 value.

Part of the reason for the astronomical growth of this market is that it allows people to get things done while spending more time with family or exploring the destination. In 2022, 48% of travelers extended business trips for leisure purposes, the 2023 AHLA study found. And 84% of business travelers are interested in bleisure travel.

For business travelers planning bleisure trips, the BCD 2022 Traveler Survey found physical, social and emotional health considerations for partners or family traveling with them were as important as respecting the three pillars of wellness for themselves.

Because these travelers are mixing business with pleasure travel, they tend to have a longer hotel stay. They’re looking for fitness amenities that help them stay healthy, disconnect from work and maintain their routine while away from home. In addition to the fitness and wellness considerations mentioned for the business and leisure segments, consider:

  • Adding family or group programs.
  • Creating healthy in-room and dining room menus that appeal to all age groups.
  • Promoting fitness and wellness activities people can enjoy in a group, such as hiking, boating or skiing.
  • Providing in-room fitness amenities.
  • Equipping your fitness space with a variety of machines and functional fitness equipment.
  • Designing post-workout wellbeing routines and plans.
  • Offering recreational equipment rentals or merchandise. For example: equipment for fishing, hiking, snorkeling, etc.
  • Sharing digital experiences that provide fitness/wellness benefits.
  • Promoting social activities, like board and trivia game nights, karaoke, or poolside activities.

Some may argue that traveling by plane is an occasion to dress up, but for most of us at Traveler, comfort is the main priority when planning a transit day ensemble: You want something loose enough that you won't need to readjust (or worse, unbutton) a few hours into a flight or road trip, but put-together enough to feel that you've made a switch out of pajamas and into a true outfit. Luckily, there is no shortage of loungewear sets these days.

Read on for 35 of the best loungewear sets to add to your travel wardrobe , many of which are sitting in our editors' dresser drawers. From upscale sweatsuits to cozy cashmere knits, they'll keep you comfy whether you're sitting on a plane, train, or in the passenger seat, and will get a re-wear on lazy vacation days when the only item on your to-do list is lounging around the Airbnb .

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. Additional reporting by Meaghan Kenny.

The Aerie LumberJane collection has been one of the brand's more popular releases. The collection features breathable, lightweight waffle fabric in shirts, shorts, and now polos. The LumberJane polo and short set are perfect for lazy vacation days spent shuffling around in your slippers . Each piece has raw seams along the sleeves, sides, and back that gives it a more lived-in look.

Buck Mason is at the forefront of elevated essentials. The Vintage Interloop set features an oversized crew that has a relaxed fit all around and thinly ribbed stiching on the cuffs to give more structure to the slouchy sleeves. The French terry sweatpants are slimming and so comfortable. Each set looks slightly different than the other, thanks to Buck Mason's Venice Wash technique that creates its cool, vintage look.

This chic pullover and sweat shorts both don the recognizable Alexander Wang logo. While the set is one of the trendiest pieces on our list, you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how soft the heavy brushed cotton terry is. You can never go wrong with a simple high-waisted pant and tank top combo. The Anrabess sleeveless set is lightweight and thin, making it supremely packable in any weekender bag or carry-on. At just $30, it is one of the most affordable loungewear sets on our list.

Is there anything easier than throwing on a jumpsuit? Spanx AirEssentials jumpsuit is one of the brand's bestsellers—and it's just been restocked in more colors. We love the drawstring tie at the waist that gives the jumpsuit a more fitted and flattering look.

Traveler 's commerce producer, Paris Wilson , swears by Roots' loungewear. “I've been raving about Roots for years. It's hard to find a brand that doesn't skimp on quality,” she says. The Luxe Crew and Pintuck pant are made from a cotton and cashmere blend. While the material gives it a more chic look, the fit of the set is more relaxed and loose. This can easily be dressed up or down, and would look great with a sleek pair of white sneakers .

The loose fit of the Ramona sweatshirt compliments the brand's drawstring waist Jane shorts. The rouched terry fabric on the inside of each garment keeps you warm and cozy without overheating. As warmer days approach, the yellow dip-dye design is a must-have for your spring and summer wardrobe .

This set is made for cold weather. The thick fabric will keep you warm and toasty whether you’re hanging inside with friends or out sightseeing. The top has a dropped shoulder sleeve that looks more oversized while the pants feature a wide-leg with a drawstring waist.. The set comes in 10 solid colors that are easy to pair with a slip-on sneaker or Ugg boots .

The soft ribbed knit of the Muse hoodie and sweatpant offers a lot of dimension to the duo. The set is lightweight enough that it can be worn over workout clothes without any bulkiness. The high-waisted joggers pair well with the cropped hoodie and offer a more chic silhouette.

You’ll be comfortable from head to toe with this ultra-soft pullover and pant set. The pants have a classic ‘70s wide-leg silhouette accompanied by an elastic waistband, while the pullover has a polo-inspired collar and a slightly cropped hem. Traveler editors swear by Lunya's washable silk pajamas and cashmere Travel Set . The brand’s Silksweats complete its holy trinity of comfort. With a sherpa interior and thermoregulating abilities, you'll be comfortable without overheating in this set. Bonus: Both pieces are reversible so you can have two looks for one.

There's something to be said for a zip-up sweatshirt, even if they've largely been replaced by pullovers of late. For one, if your temperature flips from chilly to warm, you can regulate without bothering your seatmate while trying to take off your hoodie. We're a fan of the sweatpants, too: the deep pockets, cuffed ankles, and cashmere fabric are all plusses.

A new addition to OV's ultra-soft, lightweight, and durable CloudKnit line-up : this boxy T-shirt with a slightly cropped fit. It comes in charcoal, navy, mocha, fog white, and jasmine blue, all of which will match your go-to black leggings or joggers .

Awarded one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2020, I was eager to put on Cozy Earth's ultra-soft joggers, and am happy to report they lived up to the hype. Made of a mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and spandex, they're smooth and cool to the touch, and have a loose but not baggy fit. I've worn them a ton on WFH days, and would happily fly in them. Snag a matching pullover if you like the matching set look.

San Francisco–based Quince launched a maternity collection, which includes a nursing-friendly long sleeve and lounge joggers with an adjustable drawstring waistband. All of the collection's pieces are made with renewable materials like Tencel lyocell, a biodegradable fiber made from wood pulp; mulberry silk, a hypoallergenic and thermoregulating fabric; the company's SuperSoft fabric, a blend of recycled polyester and tencel; and sustainably- and humanely-sourced Mongolian cashmere.

Outdoor Voices’ All Day hoodie and sweatpants set really is made to wear from dusk to dawn. It aims to be the softest pair of sweats you will ever wear, and stacks up, with a CloudKnit fabric that feels as cozy as your most worn-in pair of pajamas. The sweatpants are high-rise and more fitted toward the bottom to give the most flattering look possible, too. The pieces can be bought individually and come in six different colors, from neutral charcoal to a rich Kalamata purple.

While former Traveler editor Jessica Puckett's favorite cashmere set has since sold out, Cuyana's Pima outfit is another great option for plane travel and lounging, particularly in warmer environments, as the material is soft, smooth, and breathable.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Shorts, Human, and Person

Former Traveler editor Corina Quinn turned us on to Vuori's DreamKnit Collection hoodie and jogger set. “The DreamKnit feels like a cloud—it's so soft and cozy, yet lightweight, so you don't get too hot or too cool in them,” she says. “On top of that, because there are a few different models of jogger pants and tops, my friends and I have all found a model that's flattering for us.” For a pair of sweats that make you feel like you’re wearing a real outfit without actually doing so, Vuori’s unbelievably soft, stretchy sets are an easy pick.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pants, Khaki, Home Decor, and Linen

Friend + Folk is a size- and gender-inclusive brand that prioritizes a limited carbon footprint, and puts it into practice by way of free carbon neutral shipping, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, limited batch-production, and more. The Joon joggers are a favorite—the fit is roomy and comfortable yet still tailored, and the zippered pockets are ideal for stashing AirPods, lip balm, and other odds and ends without worrying they'll fall out as you dash through the airport. Pair them with the Perry pullover and you've got a new airport uniform.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Human, and Person

Lululemon may be best known for its leggings and workout wear, but don't skip over the brand's loungewear. This set is made out of a smooth Softstreme material that is stretchy and feels smooth against your skin. It's a great loungewear set to wear if you run hot.

fit leisure travel

We love this Madewell number, made of a fleece-like Superbrushed terry fabric. Wide legs and a loose fit make it just the kind of thing we want to wear on long travel days, and the patch pockets are much appreciated. Since it does have tank top-style straps, bring a cardigan or other added layer for the plane.

fit leisure travel

Some loungewear is better suited for inside wear, like this cozy ribbed shorts set. Wear the pullover, with its bell sleeves and slit in the back, over leggings for long-haul flights. The stretchy shorts have a fairly short inseam, so they'll likely be more comfortable as a sleeping short or loungewear piece to change into when you arrive at your hotel or rental house.

Image may contain: Clothing, Suit, Overcoat, Apparel, Coat, Human, and Person

This two-piece set might be the closest thing to sleepwear on this list, and yet is still cute enough to feel confident while wearing through the airport. It comes in a dozen colors, from basic heather gray to bold indigo blue, and pairs slouchy, relaxed fit pants with a scoop-neck button-up henley.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Human, Person, Standing, and Pants

Sure, all sweatpants are designed to be comfortable, but the cotton, modal, and spandex fabric Knix uses takes things up a notch. The smooth, cooling, and slightly stretchy fabric feels fantastic against skin and looks a bit more put-together than typical sweatpant material.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Dress, Human, Person, and Pants

Most loungewear tends to follow the same cut, so we appreciate Monos, a luggage brand , shaking things up when delving into clothing. This set is as soft as any sweatpants out there, with a mid-length wide-leg pant and a short sleeve V-neck tee that's just slightly cropped.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Pants

Anything labeled Signaturesoft nails both the rest day and flying-comfortably mood we're going for. The top and bottom have a streamlined shape and the sweatpants are tapered at the ankle. Both pieces are made of a comfortable rayon, acrylic, and spandex mix, so you’ll feel cozy while still looking put together. The sweatshirt and sweatpants can be purchased individually and come in nearly a dozen colors should you want to mix and match, and the sweatshirt passes the video-conferencing-chic test, in that it looks more like a standard sweater than workout wear.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pajamas, Human, and Person

Not a hoodie person? You might like this cowl-neck top, which comes with cropped pants, both made of a super soft jersey and spandex fabric. Shop the set in gray, sky blue, strawberry, or buttercream, and wear it on your next overnight flight to feel like you're in pajamas.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, Human, Person, Suit, Coat, Overcoat, Sleeve, and Long Sleeve

You may never want to put on pajamas again after wearing Softwear's Lounge Set. The fabric is buttery soft inside and out. Both the pullover and joggers are tailored and fitted with a clean silhouette—the top could pass for a normal sweater—while still being ultra soft. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The sustainable fabric is pilling-resistant and made to keep its shape after every wear.

Made for pregnant or nursing moms, this Everly Grey set is designed to fit a baby bump and make nursing easier with side openings on the top. Made of stretchy fabric with cuffed ankles and wrists and pockets on the hips, it's a loose, ever-so-slightly tailored look you'll wear again and again. Order it in one of four neutral colors: black, charcoal, oyster pink, or denim blue.

Moscow – the capital and the largest city of Russia. Founded in 1147 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, it grew from a small town on the banks of the Moskva River into a metropolis with a population over 12 million people. More than eight centuries of dynamic history left many marks in this magnificent city. The heart of Moscow is the Kremlin , which is one of the most recognizable symbols of Russia. It is situated side by side with the Red Square which is crowned by the famous St. Basil's Cathedral. During the Soviet Era Moscow was the showpiece of Russia. As a result now it is a complex city with 15th century churches sitting next to modern office blocks, narrow crooked lanes and long broad avenues, rich museums and modern department stores. Moscow has its indefinable buzz which permeates through the city 24 hours a day making it both fascinating and exciting. There are innumerable restaurants, a wide range of hotels and a wealth of historically important monuments. There are over a hundred museums, many theaters and other places to visit and admire. Moscow is constantly changing following the global tendencies. Staying for 3 days guests often wish they could stay longer. Moscow, with its unique face and spirit, will take a special place in your memory!

Russia Packages By City

Faq for russia, q. where should i shop in moscow.

A. Moscow has huge shopping malls that vie for first place with the local street markets. So while you can find almost anything at the malls, for the more authentic items, such as junk jewelry, handicrafts, spices, toys, visit the street stalls.

Q. What can I buy in Saint Petersburg?

A. If you feel inclined, then real and faux fur are pretty cheap here, and they are really great quality. Or you can pick up souvenirs such as magnets, postcards, paintings of bottles of vodka.

Q. What are the main dishes of Russia?

A. Russian cuisine is all about high-protein ingredients, so expect a lot of cottage cheese, eggs, fish and meat. Three dishes that you absolutely shouldnt miss include:

  • Bliny: A thin crepe, stuffed with your choice of fillings
  • Sirniki: Special cottage cheese stuffed bliny
  • Pelmeni: Dumplings made of fish or meat

Q. Can we increase the stay in a particular city on this trip?

A. Yes, you can increase the duration of this package, but make sure to request such changes well in advance to the travel agent or the tour operator, so that no last minute problems arise.

Q. What sort of nightlife does Saint Petersburg have?

A. The nightlife of Saint Petersburg is definitely something that you would want to be a part of. There are plenty of rocking clubs and discos, which do a roaring business all through the night, especially in the Fontanka river embankment area, which also offers tremendous views.

Parimal's 5 days trip to Russia

Complete value for money! I had done my bookings for my Russia trip with Tripo Holidays. There were multiple iterations that we discussed before finalising the itenary. The travel advisors at Tripo were patient enough to address and also rework the itenary. They were also always available during my trip and for any queries that I had, they responded immediately. Would surely look to book trips to more destinations through Tripo as well as through Travel Triangle registered travel advisors.

What's Your Fancy?: Plum Sykes Plans a Cotswolds Survival Kit

The author of Wives Like Us on what you need to fit in with the turnip toffs.

whats your fancy plum sykes plans a cotswolds survival kit

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

“I moved to the Cotswolds about 10 years ago, to a very remote farm, to raise my children out of the city,” Sykes says. “We decided to live there full time, and then started to notice that the entire Cotswolds was being invaded by very glamorous women from New York. They were well dressed and their houses were extremely serious and glamorous—there wasn't mud or a tractor in sight, it was all Range Rovers and helicopters.”

She goes on, “It’s such a beautiful part of England that it’s attracted people who really want that bucolic weekend life, and it’s become very, very expensive. It reminded me a bit of when I wrote Bergdorf Blondes , which was about a group of Park Avenue princesses, because here was another group of princesses and I couldn’t believe nobody else had written about them, to be honest.”

In Wives , Sykes follows the dramatic lives of group of women (as well as their families and staff) who live among a series of villages—Little Bottom, Middle Bottom, Great Bottom, and Monkton Bottom—and keeps a sharp eye trained on the way each sees her social stock rise and fall. It’s certainly a work of fiction (and it’s more of a love letter to the world than anything else), but parts of it did come from the author’s own experiences. “I was observing everything, because of my training as a fashion writer to wonder what’s on the table, what’s in the glass, what kind of jewelry someone’s wearing,” Sykes says. “It's looking inside the super-glamorous one percent. I was really just looking around my own environment and saying, ‘right, what shall I do?’ And this was right in front of me.”

Here, Sykes shares the musts for any Cotswolds hopeful.

Hamper Tote with Waterproof Picnic Blanket

Hamper Tote with Waterproof Picnic Blanket

"I think this is the ultimate picnic basket, and its just the right size and shape to fit everything you need for a relaxed casual picnic. I’m not one for over-ambitious meals out of doors – but a basket filled with cucumber sandwiches, sausage rolls with puff pastry, strawberries, double cream and a bottle of rose is perfection."

Ruinart Ruinart Blanc de Blancs

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs

"It tastes so crisp and delicious, and it has the most beautiful bottle. It's also very expensive, and everyone knows it. It's the Birkin bag of champagnes. And I have to admit, it's delicious."

Le Chameau Chasseur Boot

Chasseur Boot

“They're lined in neoprene, and you can even get a pair that's lined in leather, so they're extremely comfortable—and they're very expensive, but they last for 20 or 30 years, and all the royal family has them. The French fit means they’re very narrow on the calf, and they can be difficult to get off; you might have to use a boot pull, but it means they're a comfortable wellie while other brands can feel like a horrible pair of rubber boots.”

AGA Classic

AGA Classic

“The reason that Aga Range Cookers are a status symbol is that they signify a kind of aristocracy. You want to have one in your kitchen, whether in London or in the country, because traditionally they were the oven in a grand country house. A Duchess might never have gone into the kitchen, but that was the oven she had—the reason being that you could heat the water and the house from the Aga. They were invented in Sweden and became a very British thing. I was brought up with an Aga, and I have one in my house in the country. They’re an amazing piece of engineering, but they also have this generational authenticity.”

Pinstripe Double-Breasted Blazer Jacket

Pinstripe Double-Breasted Blazer Jacket

"I just got this for summer, and it’s the best work-to-cocktail outfit I’ve ever owned. With black heels and a gold bracelet, you’re ready for anything in minutes."

Chanel Les Eaux Paris-Deauville

Les Eaux Paris-Deauville

“Chanel is always developing perfumes and bringing out new ones. I love this one because it’s very, very light. It’s not sweet, but quite crisp and almost a little bit androgynous—you can spray it all over you and walk out the door. I just love it.”

Peony Subscription

Peony Subscription

“What I love about Flowerbx is that you sign up, you pay your subscription like you're paying for the New York Times, and flowers arrive either every week or every month, depending on which package you've chosen. It's very modern. But the main thing I love about them is that they only send you the single stems. There's no cheap foliage or filler; if you want 20 peonies, you get 20 peonies. It is properly chic flower delivery.”

Irish Sport Horse

a couple of horses stand in a grassy field

“Having a horse in Gloucestershire or Oxfordshire is the heart of the social glue. People meet up on their horses to either go hunting or for fabulous hacks. They'll go on hacks together and stop for a picnic on the way. Cooley Farm in Ireland is the ultimate place to get either a show jumper, a competition horse, or a hunter. The Irish Sport Horse is the perfect breed, and I'm sure the British are fighting with the Americans to get the best horses from Ireland.”

12 Lululemon ‘We Made Too Much Section’ Finds I Wish Were Already in My Suitcase — From $19

Find out what one travel writer is eyeing.

fit leisure travel

Travel + Leisure / Marcus Millan

As a longtime health and fitness writer, I’ve had the privilege of testing out a wide spectrum of activewear — and Lululemon continues to prevail as one of my favorites. But my reverence didn’t begin once I started my career; I’ve been a fan of Lululemon ever since high school (when they were still pretty new to the U.S. market). I remember saving all of my pennies to buy one of their “I <3 Running” water bottles (which perfectly captured my cross-country athlete identity at the time, duh).

Fast-forward a good 17 years, and I’ve worn the brand during so many big moments in my life: hitting personal bests in a race, taking big steps in my career, and traveling all over the world. All this to say, I’ve tested a lot of Lulu gear — from leggings to tanks to jackets, and everything in between — and honed in on my favorites from the brand. And when I'm looking to add new pieces to my wardrobe, I always check the “ We Made Too Much” section's under-the-radar curation of clothes, outerwear, and accessories. After pouring through Lululemon's current inventory, I’ve scoped out the 12 items I’m eyeing for future trips — and they're all starting at just $19.

Pleated Open-knit High-rise Tennis Skirt

It’s looking like the "tenniscore" trend is here to stay (looking at you, "Challengers" movie), and I’m here for it. For instance, I love this classic pleated tennis skirt look — both for, you know, playing tennis, and also with a cute little T-shirt and sneakers while out and about. This is the perfect travel addition if you’re headed to a resort destination this spring (or honestly, anywhere that’s warm).

Align High-rise Pants 25-inch

If you haven’t heard of the iconic Align Pants from Lululemon, allow me to introduce you. These leggings stay in place like no other, offering just the right amount of compression. The silky smooth material also feels like a second skin on your body, so you forget you’re even wearing them. But that doesn’t mean they don’t offer plenty of coverage: Even the lighter styles are expertly lined, so you can wear them during a rigorous workout or as pants while traveling, without feeling self-conscious. You can’t beat their price in the “We Made Too Much” section ($39, seriously?!), and they’re currently available in nine gorgeous colors. I also highly recommend checking out the Align Shorts , which are great for spring hikes, running errands, or sightseeing.

Everywhere Belt Bag 1-liter

Another Lulu item that’s achieved icon status at this point, the Everywhere Belt Bag is, everywhere . I’ve owned mine for almost six years now and it’s always the bag I grab before heading on a trip, a hike, a walk, or honestly anywhere I’m headed. It’s so lightweight, and yet holds a shocking amount of essentials: sunscreen, sunglasses, phone, wallet, snacks — the list goes on. This bag constantly sells out on Lululemon’s site, so I’m truly shocked it’s available in their “We Made Too Much” section.

Fast and Free High-rise Tight 25-inch

While Lululemon’s Align Pants get most of the recognition, I’m equally partial to the Fast and Free High-rise Tight. I’ve had the same pair for years, and it’s held up flawlessly throughout countless miles (both running and travel). Like the Aligns, these leggings fit like a second skin; they are buttery smooth, the perfect thickness for warmer weather, and have just the right amount of compression. And right now, you can snag these tights in the classic 25-inch style , the version with pockets (!), or even the cropped 23-inch style — all starting at $59. Now, excuse me while I stock up on all three…

Tapered-Leg Mid-rise Pant 7/8 Length Luxtreme

Lululemon may be known for leggings, but they also do pants particularly well. That includes these tapered-leg trousers, which are fantastic for travel. They’re made with one of the brand’s signature sweat-wicking and breathable fabrics, offering four-way stretch (translation: ultimate comfort). They’re available in six different versatile, neutral colors, perfect for any style or occasion.

Swiftly Tech Short-sleeve Shirt 2.0

I’m not usually a big fan of activewear T-shirts (I often find them uncomfortable or limiting), but this Tech shirt from Lululemon is one that I regularly wear. It is perfectly lightweight, breathable, and has a really nice cut — so it’s perfect for exercise or daily wear. Or, if you’re more of a sleeveless person, I swear by their tank in the same fabric (find it here for just $29 ).

Wundermost Ultra-soft Nulu High-heck Sleeveless Bodysuit

Bodysuits are great travel staples. After all, they function as a shirt, but take up virtually zero space in your luggage — and I dare you to find a comfier one than this gorgeous piece from Lululemon. It’s made with the brand’s signature Nulu fabric, which is silky smooth to the touch and feels incredible against your skin. This bodysuit, in particular, makes for a great layering piece under a button-up shirt or jacket — or it looks lovely on its own with a pair of jeans or a skirt. It’s available in three colors in the “We Made Too Much” section, but I’m partial to this elegant off-white hue.

Light Utilitech Cargo Pocket High-rise Pant

Speaking of great travel pants, I’m obsessed with these cargo pants. As always, they’re made with performance fabric to keep you cool and comfy during springtime travels. Of course, since they’re cargo pants, there are pockets, galore — but other notable features include a comfy elastic waistband, stretchy material, and a just-right high-rise fit. These must have just been added to the “We Made Too Much” section because a shocking number of sizes are still available. Each color option is stunning, but I’m about to add the java brown hue to my cart.

ABC Slim-fit 5 Pocket Pant 32-inch Length Utilitech

Lululemon also makes fantastic clothing for men — especially pants. The ABC Pants are its signature style and come in various lengths, fabrics, and cuts. They’re the perfect travel pants, As multiple reviewers confirmed, they stay wrinkle-free and feel comfortable when you're on the go. Right now, you can score the popular pants for just $69.

Hooded Mid-length Utility Jacket

Add jackets to the running list of clothing that Lululemon makes particularly well. And can we talk about this quintessential rain jacket? The oversized cut is so effortlessly cool — not to mention, incredibly functional for any spring travels. It’s water-repellent, windproof, and oh-so-easy to pack.

Zeroed In Short-sleeve Shirt

Every travel wardrobe needs a reliable t-shirt that can function in different settings. This tee is technically designed for running and training, but it’s sleek enough to wear with jeans or under a jacket. As one reviewer wrote: “It's the best shirt for workouts and everyday life.”

Women's Baller Hat Soft

No matter where I’m headed on vacation, a hat is essential on my packing list. I love Lululemon’s caps (I just ordered a new one) since they’re sweat-wicking and super comfortable throughout many hours of wear. This one comes in black or white, so it’s perfect to pair with any of your favorite travel outfits.
